Los Angeles is starting the week with the prospect of strengthening winds and increasing fire danger. Twenty-four people have died, 62 square miles have burned, and 12,000 structures are expected to be damaged or destroyed. We’ll hear the latest. Plus, immigration is likely to be a top priority for the incoming Trump administration, and and a tax form is likely to end up in a lot more people’s mailboxes this year.

Happy new year! The boys are back kicking off the new year with the same old bullshit. Josh recaps his Holiday hijinks (pun intended) from Hijyix festival in Philadelphia, as well as the Space Laces show in Charlotte on NYE. Going way back to Christmas day, the boys dive into their recap of the 31-2 assault the Ravens put down on the Houston Texans. Lamar was efficient and took matters to the ground on occasion, but this game was largely the Derrick Henry show. Tallying 27 carries for over 140 yards and a score, the king proved to the country why he's still the King. Also, Dante takes a look at some of the run fits that has him asking “what exactly is Todd Monken on?” The defense also played a stellar game as they held the Texans offense to ZERO (0) points in the game, Kyle Hamilton and Ar'Darius Washington both made key plays in pivotal moments that helped close out the win. Kyle Van Noy continues his career year, and Odafe Oweh tallied a sack as well in addition to his highest single season total. Lastly, we don't want to say it too loud, but it seems that Justin Tucker is kicking good balls again. The sports media world is ablaze with MVP discourse between Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, so the boys had to weigh in. Dante actually credits and defends Dan Orlovsky's take, but explains why Dan isn't exactly looking at it the right way. The Ravens have their final game of the regular season on Saturday, welcoming the Cleveland Browns to town to close out the year. The Browns will be starting Dorian Thompson-Robinson again this week, and could be missing some key players. From Josh and Dante, the message is simple: get the job done and stay healthy. The boys talk a little about college football as the CFP is still going on. Is Ohio State good? And can Penn State win a big game? Lastly, rave fashion is… something. We love you all so much. Thank you for another year of rocking with us. Cheers!

We had the pleasure of interviewing MISSIO over Zoom video!Personally, MISSIO is the union of two longtime friends and creative kindred spirits. Musically, MISSIO is a living and breathing entity with a mind of its own. Communally, MISSIO is a movement of fans worldwide attached to the sentient artistry of those creators. The acclaimed Austin, TX duo—Matthew Brue and David Butler—fearlessly break the rules as they fuse elements of rock, electronic, indie, and hip-hop into an unmatched and uncompromising hybrid. They tie seemingly disparate threads together with honest and heartfelt lyrics meant to both provoke and inspire.Following the 2023-2024 Cinco EP series, the pair present their most definitive and dynamic vision yet with their full-length double-album, I Am Cinco [Nettwerk Music Group]. It collates five moods—I Am Sad, I Am High, I Am Awesome, I Am Angry and I Am Crazy—into one.Since 2015, MISSIO have painted this picture. It only became clearer as they served up projects such as Loner [2017], The Darker the Weather // The Better the Man [2019], Can You Feel The Sun [2020], and VILLAIN [2022]. Tallying over 1 billion streams, their catalog has notably resonated with the Gold-certified “Everybody Gets High” and staples, including “Twisted,” “Bottom of the Deep Blue See,” “Sing To Me,” and “I See You.” Between packing houses on tour, they appeared at festivals a la ACL and Lollapalooza and incited the applause of Atwood Magazine, Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Boston Globe, New Noise Magazine, and Substream Magazine. This ambitious season of music initially took shape in their headquarters of Austin only to be completed on a creative sojourn to Mexico City. Excited to share the music with the world, the group teased what would become I Am Cinco with 2023's I Am Sad, I Am High, and I Am Awesome. Everything just set the stage for them to finally release this body of work in its entirety as I Am Cinco. We want to hear from you! Sensing that Republicans are walking into a political minefield by threatening once again to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the Biden administration is looking to capitalize by rolling out a series of initiatives aimed at high drug prices and other consequences of “corporate greed in health care.” Meanwhile, the Supreme Court hears a case that could determine when and how much victims of the opioid crisis can collect from Purdue Pharma, the drug company that lied about how addictive its drug, OxyContin, really was.Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Anna Edney of Bloomberg News, and Rachana Pradhan of KFF Health News join KFF Health News chief Washington correspondent Julie Rovner to discuss these issues and more. The 27th UN convention on climate change, known as COP27, is now underway in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. When Climate One spoke with Egyptian Ambassador Wael Aboulmagd in October, he argued that progress at this year's summit would be more rapid than in past years, because this year, the focus is on implementation rather than negotiation. And for the first time, loss and damage — what richer nations owe poorer ones for the climate impacts their emissions have caused — is on the agenda. How will these issues play out during the conference? Are countries increasing their ambition as promised, and keeping the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees alive? Climate One brings us interviews with those on the ground pushing for meaningful change in Egypt. Guests: Preety Bhandari, Senior Advisor, Global Climate Program and the Finance Center, World Resources Institute Claire Stockwell, Senior Climate Policy Analyst, Climate Analytics David Munene, Programs Manager, Catholic Youth Network for Environmental Sustainability in Africa For show notes and related links, visit https://www.climateone.org/watch-and-listen/podcasts Learn more about your ad choices. The ongoing water contamination problem in West Baltimore will likely prove to be a rare, acute problem. But Baltimore is not without its chronic problems, too. One of them is the challenge of vacant and abandoned housing. Our city has the third highest rate of vacant and abandoned properties in the country. This is according to a new report from the Johns Hopkins 21st Century Cities Initiative, which has compiled data from sources that include research done by the University of Baltimore's Neighborhood Indicator's Alliance and Open Baltimore, the city government's repository of data. The report seeks to better understand the “measurable” costs to the city of carrying a large inventory of houses that do almost nothing to add to the city's tax base, but do, do a lot to add to crime and bad health outcomes for the people living in those neighborhoods that are rife with blight. The new report is called The Costs of Baltimore's Vacant Housing. Tom's first guests today are its co-authors, Mary Miller and Mac McComas, who join us today in Studio A. Mary Miller is a senior fellow at the 21st Century Cities Initiative. After a long career at T. Rowe Price, she served as Under Secretary for Domestic Finance in the U.S. Treasury Department during the Obama Administration. In 2020, she placed third in a crowded field of candidates in the Democratic primary for Mayor… Mac McComas is the Senior Program Manager at the 21st Century Cities Initiative, and co-author of the book, Unlocking the Potential of Post-Industrial Cities. (Full disclosure: Mary Miller and Tom Hall have been friends for 30 years. Mac McComas is also a friend, and a member of the WYPR Board of Directors.) Later in the hour, Tom speaks with Hallie Miller of our partner news organization, The Baltimore Banner. She covers housing and city services for the Banner, and she joins Tom in Studio A.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It will take a lot of time and research to answer the question of what led to Russia's monstrous war against Ukraine. After Moscow launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, the notion quickly spread around the world that this was "Putin's war" and that he personally made the decision to invade. In this essay for Meduza's "Ideas" section, political scientist Kirill Rogov breaks down why this reasoning is more of a convenient pretense than a real explanation of how Russia reached this point. Small Business Banter is about helping regional business owners better prepare for current challenges, but also for the next stage of business success.I'm Michael Kerr, founder of Kerr Capital, advisors to business owners. Each week, I interview a fellow small business owner or an expert, and they share their stories, their lived experiences, the wins and the losses, and their best advice to help you, the listener, get the most you can from your own business.Small Business Banter is brought to you from the studios of 104.7 Gippsland FM and is heard across Australia on the Community Radio Network. Thanks also to Kerr Capital, supporters of the show. Okay. Welcome into another edition of Small Business Banter radio. Really great to have in Michael Kent, who's the CFO and founder of Slate Accounts, bookkeeping and financial advisory firm.Firstly, welcome Michael. Michael Kent: Thanks, Michael. Thanks for having me on the show, it's good to be here.Michael Kerr: Yeah, looking forward to chatting to you about what you do and how you help business owners. You're based in Melbourne, your business has about 20 bookkeepers and accountants servicing clients, and you can talk a little bit more about that. You didn't start as a bookkeeper, you started as a chartered accountant. You founded this business and you're really about helping business owners and CFOs to get more intelligent, efficient, and reliable with their accounts. I'll get you to introduce yourself shortly. In terms of today's discussion, what we're really wanting to do is draw on your current experience in the business you run to help owners think about how they can improve their business performance from bookkeeping and the output, which is management accounts, and so forth, also, I guess, opening the door to bringing in your bookkeeper as one of your really trusted advisors. That's the broad theme, but anyway, welcome, Michael. Give us a couple of minutes on your background, please. Michael Kent: Thanks, Michael. Well, I didn't follow a traditional accounting route. From a young age, I reckon I had a great interest in business, generally. I ended up studying Accounting, but also Law as a general Business degree. Michael Kerr: A lot of people do that. Yeah. Michael Kent: Yeah. It was good, it was interesting. When I left uni, I didn't work for a law firm or accounting firm, I went into more entrepreneurial pursuits. I actually went to Hanoi for a couple years and worked for an advisory practice there and ended up running a water company there, and then came back and tried to get an IT start up going for a few years, then took a real job in corporate land, which was, terrifically, I learned heaps for that period of my career, working in really quite general commercial roles. I ended up in consulting, but always with a view to starting my own business at one point. I suppose, the idea around Slate Accounts, I saw Cloud software coming and changing things. I thought that could be a good opportunity there. It seemed like finance was going to be deshackled[?] from the best in the computer running in my OB[?], and that it would be possible to service businesses remotely. In doing so, you could bring a broader team and a broader range of skills to help businesses, and that was the idea. I think it worked. We now have 25 staff, 10 in Australia, and 15 of those are in an office we have in Jaipur, India, that works really well for us. We can get into it if you're interested [crosstalk].Michael Kerr: Well, we'll certainly talk about your experience of outsourcing later.Michael Kent: Yeah. We've been going since 2012. [crosstalk] We started off general bookkeeping, looking after anyone that came along. These days, we probably don't take on slightly smaller businesses that we may have in the past. With the staff that we have, we find it slightly better at working with slightly bigger businesses, 2 million in turnover, or plus.In terms of how we think of our service, we think of it as 2 service offerings. One is Financial Control Services, where we run the nuts and bolts of a business' accounts function. We pay their staff, pay their bills, send invoices. We have another service offering called Financial Insight Services where we advise clients and really focus on using numbers to help them understand their business, [crosstalk] grow their business, and improve their performance, I suppose.Michael Kerr: Yeah. I think that's the underappreciated or underutilized area of bookkeeping, that ability to look past the compliance that you need to do your best in GST returns and accounts, but also really drilling in on those numbers to look at how your business is performing and how you can make it perform better, potentially.Michael Kent: Yeah. Potentially because of my background, we do compliance really well, but it's never really been a particular focus within our culture. We're really focused on systems and processes to make that work well and to make sure it's accurate, but our interest is really, we talk a lot about having an understanding of our clients' business and having an empathy for their work week, and trying to make finance really pain-free, but also bring value, I suppose.Michael Kerr: Yeah. Do you see that there is maybe an association between bookkeeping and compliance, and not with the next level of driving your business to become more profitable?Michael Kent: There is, but that's changing.Michael Kerr: Right.Michael Kent: I reckon it's possibly because the technology over the last 10 years has taken away most of the data entry, if not all. Ten years ago, there really wasn't a role that was essentially a data entry role, and that's a skill set. People who are good and interested in doing that will have a certain skill set, but that's been removed [crosstalk] with modern technology, so it means people who are really focused on that can now actually provide that service really well and efficiently for probably far more people, and that can be great. They can do it probably cheaper and better, but for a lot of people who may have been doing that work and new businesses that have come in to finance and bookkeeping, we have the space, data, and technology to really add value, so that's become a focus.I find that classic stereotype of the bookkeeper, it is sort of passing. Typically, businesses that come to me are not looking for that. They know that the world's moved on, and even small, freelance bookkeepers out there, and there's thousands of them, are now pretty focused on things beyond data entry [crosstalk] and the classic stereotype.Michael Kerr: Yeah, okay. The opportunity's here, the data gets exported out of your bank account, so it's a matter of shaping it and using it. Is that really up for the business owner to demand that or drive that, or you're just saying that bookkeeping, generally, is becoming more savvy and more of a trusted advisor in taking information to clients and saying, "Look, you should be thinking about running your business differently or changing things"?Michael Kent: I reckon there'll be a full spectrum out there and plenty of businesses will have bookkeepers, who, perhaps, not bringing that mindset and not necessarily thinking to bring that value. In many cases. I think that there's an opportunity for business owners who have bookkeepers who they really like and appreciate, and who know their businesses, to invite them to potentially go on that journey, if they hadn't necessarily thought of it proactively.Michael Kerr: What would be practical examples where there's an opportunity for either the owner or the bookkeeper to say, "Look, this information here is telling me my business is performing at this level, but I want to change it, or I need to change that." What would be examples of information that you could use to spark something different in the business?Michael Kent: Well, there are 2 lenses to think of, looking at your finance numbers. One is looking at them historically. When doing that, it's really helpful to break down the numbers and understand where the income is coming from.Michael Kerr: So, not yet. You often see revenue of $2 million, but it might be one client, it might be 50 clients, it might be 3 products or 3 services, or 50 products and services.Michael Kent: Yup.Michael Kerr: Is that the kind of stuff where you go? [crosstalk] Drill into this. It's not just one top line of revenue of $2 million. That works for compliance, right?Michael Kent: Absolutely. On the base[?] statement. that's all they're interested in, [crosstalk] but it's really helpful to break that down and work out what products or services are profitable. It's really common for businesses to discover with a bit of analysis that, in fact, they're putting a lot of effort into a service or product that's not profitable. In analyzing historical numbers, it should definitely be around focusing on product or service profitability, or for service companies that might be around, for a project profitability. There should be some trend analysis on spending, and definitely some ratio analysis. The big cost for most businesses are wages, rent, and stock, if it's a stock selling business, and if we're really understanding margins.Merely looking at a P&L on a balance sheet won't necessarily bring that out, depending on how they're structured, so encouraging a bookkeeper or a finance advisor to help a business owner pull that apart and understand those things is really valuable.Michael Kerr: Yeah. [crosstalk] The historical piece is just outlined, and you were just about to go on, I think, to the second part of it.Michael Kent: Yeah. Well, beyond that, we think that if you're going to get the most out of your finance function, it should really be forward focused. You definitely need to have an understanding of what's gone in the past, but I think it's best to start with an understanding of the strategy of the business. It doesn't need to be complex. It can be really simple. The finance function should really understand, what are the goals of this business? What's it trying to achieve? In many cases, that initial understanding of historically, what's going on, is the place to start, because that will tell you, "Well, we're doing great, but we do need to improve our margins," or, "We do need to drop our wage costs," or, "This is a sleeping service, but we could probably sell twice as much of this particular service line or product line," and that will inform the strategy. Once it's understood, "Okay, the next 12 months, we're going to try and do these 3 things," then working with the finance function or the bookkeeper to decide, "What could we measure and report on as we go through the year that would inform our progress against those goals?" That's the gold, deciding what we're trying to do, and how we're going to measure progress, and then getting that bookkeeper to go away and work out how they can get that measured and bring to the business owner a concise, succinct, simple report so they can get regular feedback on their progress towards those goals.Michael Kerr: Yeah, okay. I want to come straight back to the quality of your chart of accounts because that's where it all starts. On today's edition of Small Business Banter radio, we're chatting with Michael Kent, who's the founder and CEO of Slate Account. We'll shout out that website at the end, Michael.I love the way you've described that there's the finance function or booklist court[?], bookkeeping, account keeping. You can get a lot more out of the information that's going into the the system, historical analysis of profitability, et cetera, tying it to where you want to go, I think, the next level, because otherwise, you just go along and you don't know whether you're getting to somewhere, you don't know where that somewhere is, in terms of something that's measurable and achievable, but I imagine that when you are working with a client, all of that information rolls up into a set of accounts, and they're typically listed from the expenses from A to Z, accounting fees at the top and wages at the bottom and [crosstalk].I do a lot of work with management accounts and small business, and that layout isn't particularly helpful, so you've got to reformat that information, but also, I wonder how often there's a tendency just to shove expenses into categories, because you want to get your compliance done, but you're missing an opportunity to perhaps, really feed that information in the first place into categories, expenses that are much more relevant for doing this analysis talking about.Michael Kent: Yep. It's very common to have an A to Z chart of accounts, and it really is a massive lost opportunity. It's important for a businesses to understand where its big costs are, and focus on those. Counter-intuitively, we often say when reviewing financial statements, don't look at a statement, actually. Our typical reports will be more chart-based, and in most businesses, the costs that really matter. There's only about 3 or 4, and we prefer to present those in a chart that shows the trend over time and show us a ratio of those things, typically to revenue that that's where the business is thinking, wages to revenue, cost of goods sold to revenue, occupancy costs revenue, if real estate's a big part of the business. We then normally present your classic profit-loss statement that lists the accounts by month, almost as an appendix, because the B items are normally, there's only 4 or 5 of them, and you want to see what's happening as a trend over time.Michael Kerr: Yeah. If you're going to shift the performance of the business, you don't need to focus on 55 different expense accounts if it's 3 or 4, as you say, that always can [crosstalk] steer you to wages, rent, and so forth.Michael Kent: That's right. Someone should have a look at them. A good bookkeeper will take a look and make sure we're not doing something crazy with our phone expenses or our staff entertainment, but it's really not a sensible focus for a management meeting.Michael Kerr: Yeah. You talked about the shift to Cloud accounting. Now, we have zero miled[?], I reckon, into it, I think.Michael Kent: Yup.Michael Kerr: Is it more or less compulsory? Can you get around your compliance obligations just by continuing to use Excel always, or is the value coming out of an online subscription or a subscription to one of those service providers really worth it?Michael Kent: Absolutely. Excel is just so much harder, more time consuming, and more complex. The thing about the new Cloud accounting software is the getting the data from the banks is the game changer. You fill in a form to give the bank permission to send this company the data, and then over time, you can teach the software to recognize things. If it's Telstra, it's a phone. If it's Caltex, it's fuel. If it says Stripe, that's income, and so on. Tallying it all up becomes very quick. These days, running a bass[?], for example, it's all done with a couple of clicks, and now, you can lodge from directly inside the software. I just click a button and push it to the ATO. For smaller businesses, this software costs $25 a month, in some cases, less. [crosstalk]Michael Kerr: Pretty strong, and indeed, it kind of gives you the opportunity and to start to do that analysis that you talked about, which is, "What am I trying to achieve? How am I going towards that?"Look, I just wanted to rant through a couple of things in the last little while. Management accounts, for me, in the work I do, are the most critical piece of information. Now, when you're selling a business, what's happening last month, the last completed set of financial returns are usually 12 months old. What's happening? The quality of the management accounts, if I can call them that broadly, are so vital. I wanted to ask you, in terms of choosing a bookkeeper or assessing how your current bookkeeper's going, what's your thoughts on that?Michael Kent: Thinking first about that financial control function of the bookkeeper, getting the transactions entered, and getting bills paid, I think getting that done well is all about accurate, on time or faster, reducing risk, but also about delighting the customers of those business processes, so making sure your suppliers think you're a great company to sell to, your customers feel really good about your brand, and often, it's that finance person, the bookkeeper, who's representing you to the extent that's finance-related. I would be having conversations with prospective bookkeepers about how they might manage that and do that really well.Michael Kerr: Yeah.Michael Kent: I think the balance sheet is where a lot of bookkeepers might become unstuck. If I was interviewing a bookkeeper and had to choose one, I'd really go through my balance sheet with them and make sure they could explain. The key test here is, how would we check each of these balances, and make sure they're speaking in plain English, in a way that the business owner can really understand. I think that would set up the relationship really well.We find in recruiting our staff, the number one indicator for whether they're going to succeed at Slate Accounts is actually, "Please describe yourself, in 160 words or less, outside of work," because it's a very human task these days. It's not about data entry. The other thing to think about is about resignation proofing the function. It can be a real pain if your finance person or your bookkeeper leaves.Michael Kerr: Yeah.Michael Kent: I'd be having a chat to a bookkeeper about what backup they have and how those risks could be managed. I think that's really important, too.Michael Kerr: Yeah, okay. As a business owner yourself, you've got a significant business. More than half are offshore, and you can offshore a lot of things, bookkeeping being one of them, professional services also. What's your experience that you'd share? You have been doing it for quite a long time. In terms of just generally outsourcing for business owners, what's your thoughts on that?Michael Kent: We did it a little bit differently. I employed my first staff member in India in 2017, but I always took a very hands-on approach. It is possible to get online and find staff offshore, and do it all remotely, but long before we did this, we had the view that, "Well, our clients outsource their accounts' work to us, so we're not going to, then, in turn, outsource the work to someone else." We wanted to make sure we were doing the work for our clients.Michael Kerr: Yeah, and responsible for it.Michael Kent: Sure. Until COVID hit, until November '19, I was going to India 4 times a year, every quarter. I interviewed and recruited the first 5 staff. What's made it work? I mean, there's been a lot of change management. It had to happen across my Australian staff, and their roles have really evolved, and that's been great for them. It's a fun journey for everyone, but there's been a fair bit of work and care put into that. I think the key would be to stay very close to those staff. Just because they're offshore, I think you should have the mindset that they're in the room with you. Unfortunately, you just can't flip work over and expect it to come back. We're on calls and working on Skype and so forth with our staff all day, every day, and it works really well for us.Michael Kerr: Yeah. Whilst it's offshore, they're employees the way you set it up. You want to see that quality delivered that you promised, so you can't just outsource and hope for the best.Michael Kent: Yeah. For us, they're very much a part of our team meetings that we have, essentially, workshops, off-sites with them. That model works for us.Michael Kerr: I've been involved in outsourcing, also. I think it's like any employee relationship. As you said at the very beginning, wages is a biggest cost for just about every business, and managing people is essential to getting the business right?Michael, we're going to have to call it a wrap. I really appreciate your time and insight. I think it's a very progressive approach to bookkeeping and financial management. I think the message, very strongly, for me, that I'm hearing is that there is a role for your bookkeeper, outsourced, internal, as a trusted advisor, and really, to look beyond reducing tax, that annual cycle which has driven a lot of people in the past and a lot of accountants look past the compliance, and really look at it as a critically important part of the business to measure how you're tracking, and comparing that to where you're headed.Thank you so much for your time today. Do you just want to shout out the website, and then we'll call it a wrap, Michael?Michael Kent: Thanks, Michael. Yeah. We're at slateaccounts.com.au.Michael Kerr: All right, excellent. You do, occasionally, write some excellent articles.Michael Kent: Occasionally?Michael Kerr: I mean, you only write them occasionally.Michael Kent: I know. I'm going to work on it a little bit better there.Michael Kerr: All right. Thanks [crosstalk], Michael, for your time today. Really appreciate it.Michael Kent: Thanks, Michael. Good to see you.Michael Kerr: That is all for today's episode of Small Business Banter. (This conversation was originally broadcast on March 22, 2021) Tom's guest on this archive edition of Midday has written a thoughtful and insightful books on the subject of racial inequality. Heather McGhee is the former head of the think tank, Demos, an organization that focuses on inequality. She is now the chair of the board of Color of Change, an on-line racial-justice advocacy group with 7 million members. Her new book is called The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. McGhee’s reporting is assiduous and compassionate. She explores the history and lunacy of policies and norms that proliferate belief in a racial hierarchy. This insidious allegiance to racial hierarchy has dominated the United States since its founding. No aspect of American life is spared, and no issue, be it education, health care, housing, voting, or climate change has been unaffected. McGhee makes the case that White unwillingness to align with Black people in common cause has not only been crushing for African Americans, but for millions of White people struggling for opportunity as well. She writes, “America’s racial inequality is not only the most extreme manifestation of our inequality, but also the template, setting up a scaffolding of hierarchy that increasingly few people, of any race, can climb.” The Sum of Us also makes the case that the reasons for racial panic among White people are actually our biggest strategic assets, and our country’s greatest salvation. McGhee observes that we have reached the productive and moral limit of the zero-sum economic model, and that we have to get on the same page in order to turn the page on race in America. If we are able to do so, she says, the rewards will be abundant. She calls them the "solidarity dividend." Heather McGhee joins us on Zoom. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

No, I've never been really big on this, but now FBI and DHS, well they're both disagreeing with me. Hey everybody. Welcome back. You're listening to Craig Peterson. I've talked about the likelihood of hackers being able to influence, I mean, in a very big way, our election here in the US and I've kind of poo-pooed it, because as a general rule with 50 state elections, it would be very difficult for a foreign adversary of some sort or somebody that just wants to mess with us to really cause havoc with our election. Of course, it looks like we're going to cause enough havoc ourselves falls because of this lockdown that we did. All of the crazy things we're trying to change at the very last minute with our voting this time around. This is going to be one heck of an election season. Ah, I'm not looking forward to it. I have been warning about some of the problems that have existed with Secretary of State office websites. Some of these Secretaries of State are putting up websites that allow the local County chairs, city, et cetera, to upload the vote tallies via the web. To the Secretary of State now, on the whole, that sounds pretty good. It seems pretty reasonable. You might remember what happened in Iowa early 20 20. Yeah. Where the Democrats decided they were going to use this app for tallying all of the votes. It wasn't being used for voting, but it was being used for the tally who won. We actually don't know who won the Iowa Democrat caucuses. Isn't that right? Just amazing, because of the technology and the problems behind it. Well, when we're talking now about state hackers, countries that have massive hacking campaigns, ongoing. Yeah. How much could they mess up our election by getting into the Secretaries of State websites? Because not only are the 50 States responsible for running the elections. Tallying the votes, but they're also responsible to give that data, hopefully, good data, the federal government. So how does the federal government get that data? Well, they tend to get it by going to the 50 Secretaries of State websites nowadays. And that's where my big concern comes from. Obviously, I do not like these touch screen voting machines. I know I am a good old fashioned writing on a piece of paper or the kind of the heavier paper, a hundred-plus pound stuff. You fill in an oval for who you want and then that card you put it in the machine. The machine counts it. I love those because the bottom line it's completely auditable. I talk a lot about audits because so many of my customers are getting audited because of federal regulations, but this is different. Let's say the machine tallied, a hundred votes for Trump, and 120 votes for Biden. A spot audit could be conducted. So you take all of the cards that were fed into that machine and you manually count them. Okay. This is obviously a Trump vote. Okay. That's obviously a Biden vote. So you're going through, you're seeing what the votes were for each person and you can now say, okay, it came up the counts the same, and you know, that machines counter right for what you were looking for was correct. Those cards can then be taken later on and you can have a Republican and a Democrat and a libertarian or whatever the parties are in your state watch as those individual ballots are counted because a physical ballot exists. That's just incredibly important. They can't hack a pencil. I love that saying. Right? I think it was our Secretary of State that said that you can't hack a pencil. I'm not sure that's not all entirely true, but it's mostly true. But you can hack some of the systems that are behind the reporting, according to the FBI and the Department of Homeland security right now. An article by Brooke Crothers is pointing out that hackers and they're saying possibly nation-state actors, which means who China, Russia, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, Brazil, not so much in Venezuela, not so much nowadays, either because their economy is in shatters because they are a blank country, a socialist country. Exactly. So their economies in shatters. Brazil's in shatters looks like we might get a trade agreement by the way, with Brazil kind of interesting, but. They are saying now that there is no evidence so far, this is a Homeland security, that the integrity of the elections data was compromised. And they're saying that it does not appear these targets are being selected because they are part of our election apparatus. In other words, wait a minute, guys. Our secretaries of state's website, other systems are being hacked just as a part of a random hack. What happens if they get ransomware? And what happens if a nation-state really does want to go after them this week. We saw six spies arrested, Chinese spies who were stealing information critical to the United States of America. They lie on their visa applications. You know, that's why right now the State department's saying you might not want to go to China because China's threatening to kidnap Americans over there and hold them hostage in exchange for these spies. It's not like the old days where we would catch some Russian spies. They would catch some American spies and then we trade them. Right? No, China is right now threatening to, and they already have with Canada and two other countries, they are threatening to kidnap regular old, innocent Americans off the street of China and hold them hostage until we give back there are six spies. Can you imagine that? Yeah, China is not an enemy. China is a friend, right? Well, it's a friend. If they give you one and a half-billion dollars. That's another story for a new section here. What I have been concerned about it looks like it's happening, that these were not attacked because they're part of the election apparatus. These were attacked because they were vulnerable systems. So what vulnerabilities were used, I think everyone needs to pay attention to this cause this is a very, very big deal. This is Seesaw. This is the cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency Seesaw. They are saying that they got in through what's called vulnerability chaining. That is a big deal and that is on my list of things as part of what we cover in my cybersecurity mastery course. This is a technique that's commonly used and it's used against businesses. It's used against federal state agencies, government critical infrastructure, elections organizations. In this case, it targeted something that I've been talking about forever. VPN vulnerability. Don't use virtual private networks unless you really, really, really, really know what you're doing. Okay. This was a target against a VPN vulnerability and a flaw in that log on, which is a windows protocol that used to authenticate people who are connecting over the VPN. Now what makes us even worse is that not only did the Secretary of State offices and other government offices not have adequate security to prevent this, not only did they not have properly configured VPNs, which is like 98% of them out there. So pull up your socks, people. Patches were already available for all of the vulnerabilities. They were already out there. This is what came straight from the FBI and CISA the patches were already there and they had been disclosed and the systems were not updated. So. How safe then is, is our election infrastructure? I go back to what I've been warning about for many, many years, our over reliance on the accuracy and security of the technology. These guys that did it are known as advanced persistent threat actors. Which usually means nation-states. They did not identify who it was most of the time lately. It's been China, no matter what these so-called news organizations have been saying, it hasn't been Russia. Russia really hasn't done much lately. It's mostly China and apparently, it looks like it's a financially motivated nation-state actor that can mean Russia. They are more financially motivated, but so is China. That's why they're stealing our business secrets as well. Okay. Very, very bad. Microsoft. You might remember, we talked about it here in September, said it detected Russian, Chinese, and Iranian actors targeting the 2020 US elections. So this is stepped up activity. They are targeting the 2020 election, according to Microsoft and the national counterintelligence and security center director, William Evanina. It's a very big, very big deal. So something else to worry about for our elections in 2020. It's also something you need to worry about if you are working from home. If you are a business owner or if you're an IT person, and that's why I'm here, I'm trying to help you guys understand this. That's why I have my cybersecurity mastery program. So you can ask me any questions you want to, and we can get things solved. Get them rolling. Be sure you are on my email list so you get my newsletters. You get the training and you know, what's going on. Hey, you're listening to Craig Peterson. We're going to talk about the IRS being investigated this time. Updated: Sept. 21 Early in-person and mail-in absentee voting began in Minnesota this Friday. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the process a little different this year. Minnesota’s top elections official, Secretary of State Steve Simon, joined us on this week’s Politics Friday to answer questions from the MPR News audience. Count on it Election Day voting in Minnesota starts now Don’t let COVID-19 stop your vote Here’s how to vote by mail MN Votes More guidance from the Secretary of State Here are a few of the most frequently asked about voter questions, and Simon’s answers to them: How many mail-in ballots are you expecting in the Nov. 3 election? As of Sept. 18, the Secretary of State office already had 926,000 Minnesotans who requested to vote from home. At that rate, there’s going to be 1.2 million people voting from home this general election, Simon said. In total, they’re expecting 3 million voters, with over a third of them voting from home. Recently, the SOS office sent out a mailing to 2.3 million Minnesotans who have not already requested an absentee ballot. “We’re urging people, if they can, to do that online and MNvotes.org, and not fill out the paper form,” said Simon. Why are you urging people to vote by mail? The state elections office wants to help flatten the curve, and not only the COVID-19 curve, but also the absentee ballot curve. Even if they weren’t encouraging Minnesotan to vote by mail, many voters would still choose to vote from home. “So the question then comes up: do we want them to have it earlier or later? The answer is earlier. Do we want more people to do it online versus paper? The answer is online,” said Simon. To equally benefit the voter and county, Simon’s office wants to make sure they can get the votes in earlier. In the mailings that were sent out, they’ve clearly explained the vote from home process step-by-step and stated that voting from home is an option for everyone this November. Are the county election offices prepared for this flood of mail traffic? “Putting on an election is a team sport, so we are partners and teammates with counties and cities. Year in and year out in Minnesota we are blessed with leadership at the county level that by and large just does an outstanding job,” said Simon. Election staff is ready, because of the steps the Legislature has taken to make their jobs easier. Minnesota has a fourteen day head start this year, so election staff can start opening and processing mail-in ballots 14 days ahead of Election Day. When you say processing the ballots, does that mean counting the ballots? Processing the ballots means opening them and putting them in a machine, but not tallying them yet, Simon said. Tallying is left until Election Night after the polls have closed. What if I decide I still don’t want to vote by mail? I want to go to my regular polling place on Nov. 3. Can I still do that? “We will have all 3,000 polling places across Minnesota open, whether two people show up or millions and millions show up,” said Simon. Staff will be ready with PPE and other equipment to help people stay people safe. During the last primary election, the SOS office gave high-grade masks for all election judges and poll workers, and gave regular-grade masks for voters who did not have one. The stations were highly sanitized and everyone was required to socially distance themselves from each other. Polling places are going to try to do the same thing for this election since the primary was so successful. Simon’s office has checked with election staff across the state to make sure they have what they need, and it looks like they do. However, one of the easiest ways voters can help make the polling place safer is to choose to vote from home, he said. There are some different rules for mail-in voting this year. What are they? “In a normal year, the rule is that you got to get your ballot back by Election Day. But that’s not the rule this abnormal year,” said Simon. Because of a standing court order, voters can send their ballot as late as Election Day. As long as voters get the ballot in the mail by Nov. 3 and it’s received by Nov. 10, their vote will be counted. “Every single Minnesotan voter has an automatic seven day cushion to get the ballot from Point A to Point B,” said Simon. Given all that’s happened with the U.S. Postal Service recently, if a ballot arrives to an elections office after the deadline and it’s not the voter’s fault, how flexible are the local election officials allowed to be for the ballot to be counted? There’s a short answer and a long answer. The short answer is the ballot has to get to the election offices by Nov. 10, and anything after that will not be counted under the law. “Am I disturbed and alarmed by some of what I’m seeing and observing reports from Washington about the postal service? Sure. Might there be some delays? Yes. But we in Minnesota have several workarounds, several ways to mitigate even those delays,” said Simon. The best way to avoid delays is to order and turn in your ballot early and not wait until Election Day, because that’s when election officials are the busiest. “Now it’s everyone’s right to wait until Election Day to vote, either by mail or in person, but if you’re the kind of person who knows a week out, two weeks out, three weeks out who you’re going to vote for, and nothing and no one is really going to change your mind, get it in as soon as you can,” said Simon. Also, just because you received your ballot by mail, doesn’t mean you have to turn it in my mail. You can hand deliver it to your county or city election office or, with some limitations, you can give it to someone you trust to hand deliver it for you. Lastly, to provide voters some peace of mind, there is a feature on the Secretary of State’s website that lets you track your ballot so you can know for sure that your vote was counted. What happens if you cast your vote early by mail, but then you change your mind? Is there a way to invalidate your mail-in ballot and vote in person? In Minnesota this year, you can cancel your ballot up to 14 days before the election. To do that, contact the local election office that sent your ballot. After they cancel your ballot, you can submit a new mail-in ballot early or cast your ballot in person on Election Day. Some voters have called their local county courthouses and were told their usual polling place is not open this election. Why could that be? A bill was passed recently in the Legislature that allowed counties and cities to change certain polling places if they may have been places that could potentially expose vulnerable people to COVID-19, such as nursing homes and schools. Everyone still has a physical polling place. To find your polling location, go to MNvotes.org and type in your address to see where to vote. What if something happens to the candidate that you voted early for such as they die or they are deemed ineligible to run for office? Can you recast your ballot? Since the general state election is considered a partisan office, there would be a special election held in February with a new candidate/candidates, so the vote would not count. However on the federal level in the race for president, it would depend on at what stage the incident occurred. The truth is, there is real debate about that,” said Simon. What if you vote early and then you pass away? Is your vote still counted? Your vote is not counted. You have to be an eligible voter by Election Day. “That goes for people who are 17 and not 18 yet, and by the same analogy that goes for people who were alive when they voted and not alive on Nov. 3,” said Simon. And how will you know to invalidate their vote? The state elections office works with the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Health and their death databases to check if a voter is alive or not. The cities and counties also do their own analysis about their voters’ deaths. How can you ensure that the person who used the mail-in ballot is eligible to vote and that the person who filled out the ballot is really the voter? In Minnesota, when you order your absentee ballot, you have to supply some personal identifying information such as part of a social security number or driver’s license number. Unless the ballot is returned with the same identification information that was provided when you ordered your ballot, it will not be counted. “We have really good security in place and that’s only the first tier of security. The second tier is a barcode that is specific to every individual voter that accompanies a ballot and the third is a signature,” said Simon. When does early in-person voting begin? Early in-person voting begins one week before Election Day in late October. This process of voting feels a lot like a typical Election Day meaning you go in, fill out your paper ballot and turn it in to the ballot counter. However, this is not your first opportunity to vote. Your first opportunity to vote in-person is with early absentee voting which started Sept.18 — the process is slightly different. Is there a need for additional volunteers to help out with the large volumes of expected absentee ballots this election? It depends on the polling place. You could call your local election office and ask if they need help processing ballots or extra people to help out on Election Day. Is Minnesota using absentee ballot drop-off bins? Minnesota election offices do have the option to use a drop-off bin, and many are, but it is not required. If you are dropping off your own ballot, you can turn it in to a drop box that is either staffed or not staffed. However, if you are dropping off someone else’s ballot, the box must be staffed. Will drop boxes have 24-hour security? The SOS office advises counties and cities to practice maximum security and physical integrity, but Minnesota law is largely silent on the specifics. What if your signature has changed since the last time you registered to vote? Will it invalidate my vote? “The first thing that is looked at is whether that personal identifying information matches and if it does, that’s it, you don’t go to the next step,” said Simon. Signatures change for all sorts of reasons, such as you broke your hand and you write differently now. As long as your identifying information matches up, it is okay if your signature looks different than it originally was. When do absentee ballots get mailed out? Election offices began sending out absentee ballots on Sept. 18. What if you requested an absentee ballot but it never comes? If a few weeks go by after Sept. 18 and you still haven’t received your absentee ballot, you should order another one. Because of the large number of absentee ballots and because the effective deadline is seven days after Election Day, do you expect that we will know the results of the election on the night of Nov. 3? Because of the special circumstances this election, we won’t have 100 percent of the ballots until Nov. 10, Simon said. However, just because election officials have not counted all of the votes yet, it doesn’t mean we won’t know the winners for a week. “I predict that in a large majority of contests, we will know winners, we will know outcomes sooner rather than later, if not on election night, then shortly thereafter,” said Simon. He explained this using a hypothetical election. If Candidate A is beating Candidate B by 1,000 votes, but there are still 700 votes to be counted, even if all 700 of those votes went to Candidate B, Candidate A would still win, because they are up by over 700 votes. So, while we may not know how much a candidate won by, we will most likely be able to determine a winner. What are the mask mandates at the in-person polling places? In indoor public spaces in Minnesota, everyone must wear a mask. Polling places are no different. Here are the instructions given to those working at polling places: If a voter walks in without a mask, please offer them one. If despite the offer they don’t take it, ask them to please wear a mask. If they still refuse to wear a mask, offer an alternative solution such as voting in the hallway or do curbside voting in a vehicle. If they are still persistent on not wearing a mask or conducting their vote in an alternative way, you have to give them a ballot. “You can’t condition a constitutional right on someone declining to wear a mask,” said Simon. They would still potentially have to pay the $100 fine for not following the mask mandate, but they still are able to vote. What if you order your absentee ballot to be sent to one address, but you move to another address before it’s sent? You should order another absentee ballot to be sent to your updated address. Also, if you move after you have registered to vote in person, you need to register again under your updated address. If you are standing in line when the polls close, can you still vote? If you are in line when the polls close at 8 p.m., you can vote. Are polling places gun-free zones? It depends on where you are. “If you are in a facility that is in itself a gun-free zone, like a school, then it’s a gun-free zone. If you’re in a facility that is not, can someone bring in a gun? Yes, they can,” said Simon. If you get your mail from a P.O. box, but live at a different address, what proof of address can you provide on your absentee ballot? “If you go to MNvotes.org, our website, it will give you a walk through of the various things you can show to prove that you live where you say you live,” said Simon. How many places do you have to sign on the absentee ballot? The voter is asked to sign the envelope one time. In a typical year, an absentee ballot would have to also be signed by a witness, but because of a standing court order, that is not required this year. Is there a common mistake people make that they should avoid in order for their vote to be counted? The number one reason ballots are typically rejected in Minnesota is because of the witness signature. However this year, a witness signature is not required, so that should not be a problem. The number two reason is timeliness. “I’m quite confident that with the seven-day buffer, that we will have far fewer examples of voters whose ballots have been rejected for that reason,” said Simon. He urges people who are nervous about timeliness to vote as early as they can or hand deliver their ballot to their election office. The Electoral College is supposed to vote on Dec. 14. Do you think all the state’s votes will be counted by then? “I think we will resolve this by then. It would be extraordinary if we didn’t,” said Simon. Are you able to make a prediction on turnout for this election? “For the last two elections in a row, we’ve been number one in America in voter turnout, — both in 2018 and 2016 — so we’re going for the three-peat,” said Simon. Over the past few episodes we have been counting the costs of your wants and wishes in retirement and on this episode, we get down to basics. What are your needs? You may think that defining your needs is the easy part: food, water, shelter, clothing, and healthcare, right? Well, it’s actually a bit more complicated than that. As a matter of fact, defining your needs can be much more complicated than coming up with your wants and wishes. Everyone has different needs in their life. What one may consider a need, someone else may scoff at. Listen to this episode of Retirement Answer Man to help you count the costs of your true needs in retirement. How do you decide what your needs are? Defining your needs is not as easy as it seems. To define your needs you have to consider what the deal breakers are. What can you really not live without? Everyone has different needs. For example, consider a golf club. Many would consider a golf club membership a want or wish, but for others, this is their primary social outlet. For these people, a golf club membership is a need. On one hand you need to be practical and consider what you truly need, but on the other hand, you don’t want to build a cage around yourself. Complicating your needs can actually lead to a very sad life so think carefully about what is important for you to live a happy life. Why do we break things down this way? You may be thinking, why do I need to define my needs, wants, and wishes? You may think that moving through these exercises is a waste of time. But defining these categories is a way to help when you come to a crossroads. When it is time to dial things down as you take away income sources, or maybe when the markets are performing well and you have a bit extra you can examine these categories and decide how to negotiate with yourself. Having everything broken down into categories allows you to consider more choices. Defining your needs, wants, and wishes is an important first step to rock retirement. What is your baseline? To consider what your needs are you have to think about your baseline. There are 2 ways to determine your baseline. You can look at it from a top-down perspective. To do this, take your income and subtract your savings. This equals your consumption. You can also come at it from a bottom-up point of view. With the bottom-up way determine what your costs will be for healthcare, housing, taxes, utilities, food, transportation, and basic fun. You can either jot these costs down on paper or make a spreadsheet. Having an idea of what your baseline costs will be can really help you gain perspective on how you will rock retirement. What are the average costs of basic needs in retirement? The costs of basic needs change quite a bit from state to state and from lifestyle to lifestyle. The costs of taxes also vary greatly between the states. Some states are trying to become more baby-boomer friendly to attract retirees. These states have low taxes on things like pensions and property. Here’s the breakdown of average costs in other categories: Housing: $1322/month Transportation: $550/month Healthcare: $500/month Food: $500/month Entertainment $200/month Whether you use a top-down approach or a bottom-up method, begin to calculate the costs of what your basic needs will be in retirement. Don’t worry about getting it perfect, costs will change over time. Counting the costs is an important step in learning how to rock retirement. L.A. Music Powerhouse, Fernando Perdomo, releases “The Golden Hour”, the perfect culmination of an amazing musical journey, evoking the past and inspiring the future. FOR RELEASE July 18, 2017 LOS ANGELES, CA - One of the most accomplished musicians on the LA scene, Fernando Perdomo has created an album that echoes the sound and feel of classic 70s singer-songwriter records. Recorded at Ardent Studios with Big Star archivist and engineer Adam Hill, “The Golden Hour” has captured the atmosphere, energy and melancholy mood of the classic Big Star albums recorded within those walls. The sound of "The Golden Hour" features the instruments and gear heard on classic albums by the iconic power pop group. The main electric guitar employed on the album is a vintage Gibson ES-330 that was owned by late Big Star founding member, Chris Bell. Perdomo also was afforded access to the original Mellotron used by Big Star, which is heard on every song on the record. From the opening piano-instrumental, "Sunset" to the inspirational closer, "Gold," vast emotional ground is covered on “The Golden Hour.” Many of the songs on the record clock in at less than 3 minutes long, wielding a measured sonic economy in a world full of overcooked pop. Only 36, Perdomo is a veteran sideman having backed up a who’s who of musical talent numbering Todd Rundgren, Jakob Dylan, Fiona Apple, Beck, Emitt Rhodes, Linda Perhacs, Cristian Castro, and more. Tallying years of experience has honed his consummate ability and robust creativity on a variety of instruments. In fact, Perdomo is a virtual one-man band on “The Golden Hour” providing all the vocals and instrumentation. Lyrically, Perdomo’s exquisitely crafted songs are infused with a finely nuanced mix of honesty and vulnerability. On "I Feel (Therefore I Am)", Perdomo sings "I've made mistakes; it can be great" which is quite the admission from a musician who sounds like a true perfectionist. On "Love Loss Repeat," he intones, "Nothing lasts forever…especially love”. Perdomo wrote every song on the record independently, save for "Look At The Moon," which is a co-write between Perdomo and Jordan Zevon, son of Warren Zevon, who was inspired to write the instrumental for a bridge while watching Perdomo play his original version of the song on Facebook Live. While in Memphis, Perdomo wrote the lyrics for the bridge resulting in the final version of “Look At The Moon”, an honest love song about venturing out with the one you love on a moonlit night. Laying down the foundation of the record at Ardent Studios, Perdomo put the finishing touches on the record at his own Reseda Ranch Studios. The album was mixed and mastered by Grammy-award-winning engineer, Zach Ziskin. “The Golden Hour” features a gorgeous album cover image by Derek Cintron. Shot before the first note of the album was recorded, the evocative cover inspired the tone for the music that followed, and the visuals truly have captured the feel of the record. The Golden Hour is here…Perfect Light, Perfect Love…Enjoy!

It’s been just over a year since Britain decided to leave the European Union and David made five Brexit-inspired stock picks. While those were meant as long-term picks (3 years at least), it’s fun to check on their progress. The FTSE 100 (or Footsie) is up since then. How we doin’?
