In this episode of NHL Wraparound, Neil Smith and Vic Morren turn their attention to the Montreal Canadiens — a team on the rise after breaking back into the playoffs for the first time since their 2021 Stanley Cup Final appearance. The hosts dig deep into Montreal's pivotal offseason, highlighted by a massive trade for defenseman Noah Dobson and the big-ticket extension that followed — 8 years at $9.5M AAV. Is Dobson truly a franchise defenseman? Can he deliver on that contract, especially paired with Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson?Neil and Vic also explore Montreal's elite prospect pool, including standout names like Ivan Demidov, David Reinbacher, and Jacob Fowler — plus what their development means for the future of the franchise. And with Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky continuing to grow, the Habs look poised to become a major threat… but are they ready now?
In this episode of Summer Coolers, Neil Smith and Vic Morren dive into the offseason developments for the Los Angeles Kings after another frustrating playoff exit. For the fourth consecutive year, the Kings were eliminated by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round—this time after holding multiple leads and letting key games slip away. With Rob Blake out and Ken Holland in as GM, the Kings are attempting to retool—but are they reloading or regressing? The hosts break down the impact of Holland's veteran-heavy signings—Corey Perry, Cody Ceci, Joel Armia, and Brian Dumoulin—all of whom push the Kings' roster deeper into “win-now” territory. But with an aging core that includes Drew Doughty and Anze Kopitar, and a first-time head coach in Jim Hiller, there are real questions about whether this team can make it out of the first round, let alone compete for the Cup.They also revisit LA's playoff series against Edmonton, highlighting how close the Kings were to taking control—and how costly breakdowns and coaching decisions may have sealed their fate.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] A fourth straight playoff loss to the Oilers — what went wrong again?[01:00] Ken Holland takes over as GM — will he be the answer?[01:33] Offseason additions: Perry, Armia, Ceci, Dumoulin — average age over 34[02:40] Perry's Stanley Cup Final curse — five different teams, five losses[04:15] Game-by-game recap: blown leads, failed challenge, poor puck decisions[06:00] Byfield's development, Fiala's upside, and depth up front[07:15] Defensive drop-off: losing Gavrikov, aging Doughty, concerns with Ceci[08:10] Coaching hot seat: how long is the leash for Jim Hiller?[09:15] Could Peter DeBoer be an option if things go south early?KEY TAKEAWAYS:The Kings continue to stumble in the postseason, despite holding multiple leads over the Oilers in key games.Ken Holland's first offseason as GM focused on experience, but at the expense of speed and youth. The blue line took a hit with the loss of Vladislav Gavrikov, and the replacements (Ceci, Dumoulin) raise concerns.Jim Hiller is not Holland's hire, and with big expectations and a veteran group, a slow start could trigger changes.Quinton Byfield's second-half surge and the continued consistency of Kempe and Danault offer hope—but the pressure is building.RESOURCE LINKS:
In this Summer Coolers episode of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren examine the Colorado Avalanche, a franchise that continues to contend—but still hasn't returned to the Stanley Cup Final since hoisting the trophy in 2022.The Avalanche finished the 2024–25 season with 102 points and their eighth straight playoff appearance, but fell in Game 7 to the Dallas Stars in the second round. The hosts dive into what's holding the Avs back from reclaiming the Cup, despite the presence of two of the league's most electrifying stars: Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. They also break down a relatively quiet offseason highlighted by the signing of Brent Burns, the addition of Victor Olofsson, and the trade that brought in Gavin Brindley while shipping out Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood. The Avalanche also re-signed key contributors like Brock Nelson, Parker Kelly, and Josh Manson, while losing depth pieces like Jonathan Drouin and Ryan Lindgren. As the Avs prepare for another run, the big questions remain: Is this still a Cup-caliber team? Or have they become more sizzle than substance?IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Avalanche recap: Consistency without deep playoff success[00:36] Game 7 vs. Dallas: A haunting finish to a promising year[01:00] Star power vs. depth: Are MacKinnon & Makar enough?[02:00] Offseason review: Brent Burns signs, Coyle/Wood traded[03:00] Gavin Brindley's upside and forward depth[04:00] UFA/RFA re-signings: Nelson, Manson, Vejdemo, Kelly[05:00] Defensive pairings: Makar, Toews, Manson, Burns[06:00] Goaltending: Blackwood and Wedgewood tandem[07:00] Full-strength roster? Landeskog returns to open season[08:00] A stacked Central Division: Dallas, Winnipeg, Colorado[09:00] Why playoff format hurts deep divisionsKEY TAKEAWAYS:Colorado's core remains elite, with MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen, and Landeskog leading the way, but playoff progress has stalled. The addition of Brent Burns offers leadership and power-play presence, but the team needs more from its second-tier stars.Gabriel Landeskog's full-season return could be a game-changer, giving Colorado much-needed leadership and physicality.Goaltending remains a question: Blackwood and Wedgewood must prove they can deliver postseason-caliber performances. The Central Division is brutal—with Dallas and Winnipeg also strong, one top-tier team will inevitably exit early due to the current playoff format.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX (Twitter): https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #ColoradoAvalanche #JaredBednar #NathanMacKinnon #CaleMakar #BrentBurns #VictorOlofsson #GavinBrindley #CharlieCoyle #MilesWood #BrockNelson #ParkerKelly #JoshManson #JoelKiviranta #JonathanDrouin #RyanLindgren #JimmyVesey #IvanIvan #DevonToews #SamGirard #SamMalinski #MackenzieBlackwood #ScottWedgewood #ValNichushkin #JackDrury #RossColton #MartinNecas #ArtturiLehkonen #GabrielLandeskog
In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren break down the Carolina Hurricanes' offseason, their consistent regular season success, and the lingering concerns that have prevented them from reaching the Stanley Cup Final—despite three Conference Final appearances in the last seven years. The Canes finished second in the Metro Division with 99 points in 2024–25 and made quick work of New Jersey and Washington before falling to Florida in five games in the Eastern Conference Final—again.Neil and Vic analyze the team's latest acquisitions, including the high-profile signing of Nikolaj Ehlers from Winnipeg, and the trade for K'Andre Miller from the Rangers. They also examine what's lost with the departures of Brent Burns, Dmitry Orlov, and Scott Morrow, and how the defense corps now leans heavily on Jacob Slavin, Alexander Nikishin, and Jalen Chatfield. The episode also features a fascinating side story: Rod Brind'Amour's son Skyler Brind'Amour and Keith Primeau's son Caden Primeau are now teammates—23 years after their fathers were traded for each other.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Summer Coolers intro: Carolina Hurricanes outlook[00:36] 2024–25 season recap: Regular season strong, playoffs stalled[01:10] Forwards set: Ehlers, Aho, Jarvis, Svechnikov, Blake, Martinook[02:00] Defense changes: Miller in, Burns, Orlov, and Morrow out[03:00] K'Andre Miller's fit and the high cost of acquisition[03:43] Goaltending concerns: Freddie Andersen, Pyotr Kochetkov, Caden Primeau[05:00] Re-signings and RFA updates: Suzuki, Skyler Brind'Amour, Stan Coven[06:00] The Brind'Amour–Primeau trade connection, 23 years later[06:50] Jacob Slavin's leadership and Shane Gostisbehere's PP role[08:00] Are the Hurricanes truly better than last year?[09:00] Why Carolina dominates the regular season but stalls in May[10:30] The need for playoff-style hockey to break through[11:00] Final verdict: Metro favorite—but Cup contender?KEY TAKEAWAYS:Carolina remains one of the NHL's most consistent regular-season teams, but hasn't been able to convert that into a Stanley Cup Final appearance.Nikolaj Ehlers' signing adds another skilled forward, but may not be enough to change the team's playoff identity. The defense is in transition, with Burns and Orlov gone and K'Andre Miller's growth now a key variable.Goaltending remains a concern, and a major question mark heading into 2025–26.Carolina must learn to play playoff-style hockey earlier—and more consistently—if they hope to get over the hump.RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787#NHL #Hockey #Podcast #K'AndreMiller #NikolajEhlers #SebastianAho #AndreiSvechnikov #SethJarvis #JacksonBlake #TaylorHall #JordanMartinook #LoganStankoven #JordanStaal #K'AndreMiller #ScottMorrow #MikeReilly #CaydenPrimeau #SkylerBrind'Amour #FrederikAndersen #EricRobinson #RyanSuzuki #RodBrind'Amour #KeithPrimeau #BrentBurns #DmitryOrlov #PyotrKochetkov #AlexanderNikishin #JaccobSlavin #JalenChatfield #ShayneGostisbehere #SeanWalker #EricTulsky
Pittsburgh Penguins For Sale 09/04/25Rumors inspired journalistic deep-dives, with the resulting articles giving way to a fanbase-wide assumption that the Fenway Sports Group's tenure as owners of 1967's most successful expansion NHL franchise may come to an end - sooner than most anyone would have thought. On today's episode, FPF co-hosts Jeff Taylor and Jordan DeFigio take you through two written pieces, recently published in The Athletic. It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed the Oilers being back in town, the latest on Connor McDavid's contract, Dylan Holloway speaking after a year with the Blues, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. With the Oilers players arriving in Edmonton for the captain's skates, it's hard not to get excited about the upcoming season and what our new and old friends will be able to do to avenge a second consecutive Stanley Cup Final loss. Yet, even with the hope of a new season upon us, the only thing anyone around here wants to talk about is whether or not Connor McDavid will sign an extension before the season starts. What started as close to a certainty as you could get has now been clouded with doubt after a run of insiders have suggested No. 97 could start the season without a new deal in place. Obviously, that situation would not be ideal, but if you listen to Jeff Jackson's side of the story, a lot of this noise is much ado about nothing. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about turn signals before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive with nonsense again this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as they were all over the map. The voicemail is always a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode, because having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better.
The hosts wrap up the Summer Cooler series focusing on the Pacific Division where the Edmonton Oilers have represented the Western Conference in the past two Stanley Cup Finals though the division sent only three teams to the playoffs in 2025.IN THIS EPISODE[01:44] - Edmonton Oilers - The most compelling question for the upcoming campaign is whether enough has been done to keep impending UFA Connor McDavid in the fold beyond this season. And, if so, for how long?[11:41] - Vegas Golden Knights - The biggest off-season move was authored by the VGK in acquiring Mitch Marner from the Maple Leafs. The franchise consistently operates in the "now and we'll worry about the future when we get there."[19:37] - Los Angeles Kings - After finally having everything in their favor in the opening round, the Kings still managed to fall for a fourth straight spring to the Oilers. Can a bunch of older free agents move this team forward in 2026?[28:47] - Calgary Flames - One of the real surprises in 2024-25 re-signed many of their own players as opposed to adding any free agents. Not much room for error with an offensively challenged team that won't be sneaking up on anyone in the new season.[36:29]- Vancouver Canucks - If there's an opposite to the Flames, it the Canucks who entered 2024-25 with high expectations only to go through a tumultuous season. Rookie head coach Adam Foote takes over a team with a much lower bar heading into the new campaign.[44:14] - Anaheim Ducks - A team many are looking at to take a big step forward, the Ducks do so with the second winningest coach in NHL history, returning to the best for the first time in almost four years.[52:37] - Seattle Kraken - In the spirit of Pacific Division continuity, there's the 2024-25 overachiever, the underachiever, the up-and-comer and the status quo. The fifth year Kraken somewhat fit into that category, even with a new head coach.[1:02:01] - San Jose Sharks - Yes, reason for optimism in the Bay Area. While pushing the Western bubble would still be a long shot, their youth down the middle is set to become the cornerstone of the franchise for the next decade.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #ShortShifts #NYCentric #StanleyCupdate #NeilSmith #VicMorren #NHL #SummerCoolers #Loogaroo #AnaheimDucks # #BostonBruins #BuffaloSabres #CalgaryFlames #CarolinaHurricanes #ChicagoBlackhawks #ColoradoAvalanche #ColumbusBlueJackets #DallasStars #DetroitRedWings #EdmontonOilers #FloridaPanthers #LosAngelesKings #MinnesotaWild #MontrealCanadiens #NashvillePredators #NewJerseyDevils #NewYorkIslanders #NewYorkRangers #OttawaSenators #PhiladelphiaFlyers #PittsburghPenguins #StLouisBlues #SanJoseSharks #SeattleKraken #TampaBayLightning #TorontoMapleLeafs #UtahMammoth #VancouverCanucks #VegasGoldenKnights #WashingtonCapitals #WinnipegJets #ConnorMcDavid #LeonDraisaitl #StanBowman #EvanderKane #ViktorArvidsson #CoreyPerry #ConnorBrown #JohnKlingberg #JeffSkinner #TrentFrederic #KasperiKapanen #EvanBouchard #AndrewMangiapane #CurtisLazar #IsaacHoward #RileyStillman #ZachHyman #VasilyPodkolzin #RyanNugent-Hopkins #MatthewSavoie #MattiasJanmark #AdamHenrique #MattiasEkholm #DarnellNurse #BrettKulak #JakeWalman #TyEmberson #StuartSkinner #CalvinPickard #MitchMarner #NickRoy #MarkStone #TomasHertl #WilliamKarlsson #ReillySmith #BrandonSaad #JeremyLauzon #ColtonSissons #NicolasHague #JaycobMegna #TannerPearson #VictorOlofsson #AlexPietrangelo #SheaTheodore #BraydenMcNabb #NoahHanafin #ZachWhitecloud #BruceCassidy #KaedanKorczak #BrettHowden #KeeganKolesar #PavelDorofeyev #JackEichel #IvanBarbashev #AdinHill #AkiraSchmid #SergeiBobrovsky #KenHolland #JoelArmia #CodiCeci #BrianDumoulin #RobBlake...

It's another Wednesday in the middle of the NHL dead zone, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap what was another non-event news week in Edmonton. On today's podcast, I discussed Tyler's Ace Race, patiently waiting for Oilers news, extension rumours, and whatever else has happened over the last seven days. There isn't much happening in Edmonton Oilers land these days, which meant a very quick recap of the news and stories that happened over the last two weeks. While we still wait for Connor McDavid's contract extension, more insiders are starting to chime in with what they think this new deal is going to look like, including John Shannon's speculation that the AAV will be lower than many expect. I also touched on a recent interview Stuart Skinner gave at NHL.com, where the Oilers' goalie spoke about being confident that the group will be able to respond after a second consecutive Stanley Cup Final loss. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive with nonsense this week, and as always, the messages were as fun as ever. The voicemails are a fun way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Happy 38th Birthday to Sidney Crosby 08/07/25There are two things about Sidney Crosby's birthday which every Penguins fan knows by heart. For one, the date of our Captain's arrival on Earth is emblazoned on Crosby's back-and-shoulders, any time he skates for the Pittsburgh Penguins: “8/7.” Secondly, Sid's birthday means that training camp is just around the corner, signaling an encouraging “midpoint” in an otherwise mundane summer offseason.Special thanks to Espresso A Mano, Pittsburgh's finest coffee roasters and cafe, for partnering with Fly Penguins Fly podcast. Will Bowman surprise us with a trade no one sees coming? Is he done making moves for now?Changing gears, we looked through some of the news that came down the pipe over the last week, and gave our takes on what's still left to be done. On this week's episode technical difficulties with the episode may have been caused by lightning hitting Scotty's house, and Fred is back from a fishing trip. We are sorry about the crappy quality of the episode, but please enjoy it, none the less. Keep laughing, friends.

Hosts Alex Kirshner, Ben Lindbergh, and Lindsay Gibbs talk about the NBA Finals and the Oklahoma City Thunder's victory over the Indiana Pacers – the comeback kings of the season. They discuss how the Pacers' unsatisfying underdog ending and Tyrese Haliburton's on-court injury made this one of the more bittersweet Finals of recent years. Then, the panel dissects the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to a group of investors led by the Dodgers' owner Mark Walter, and the team's record-breaking $10 billion valuation, and what it means for the presence of big, big money in sports team ownership. Finally they discuss the Edmonton Oilers getting iced out of Games 5 and 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals by the dominant Florida Panthers. They ask why Edmonton can't get it together, and whether they might just be getting a little long in the tooth. On the bonus episode available exclusively for Slate Plus members, the panel discusses another, less-positive team acquisition story: Mat Ishbia's purchase of the Phoenix Suns back in 2022. Plus, the team's blockbuster trade for Kevin Durant in 2023, undone this week when they traded Durant away to the Houston Rockets. . NBA Finals (3:02): Thunder Vs. Pacers The Lakers Get Sold (22:15): A Record-Breaking $10 Billion Dollars Stanley Cup (41:52): What's Up With Edmonton? The Stanley Cup has been awarded (not to Corey Perry - again), and the NHL offseason has officially begun. Tune in as we open by discussing Patrick Kane's future with the Detroit Red Wings, Kane and Steve Yzerman both expressing mutual interest in Showtime continuing in Hockeytown, Toronto Maple Leafs fans setting themselves up for disappointment hoping he's a Mitch Marner replacement, how Kane fits with Alex DeBrincat, Marco Kasper, Dylan Larkin, and Lucas Raymond, & more (4:15). After that, we discuss potential depth forward targets for Steve Yzerman, including former Detroit Red Wings like Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou, Pius Suter, Robby Fabbri, & more to add to Todd McLellan's squad (16:15). Next, our analysis of the Stanley Cup Finals as the Florida Panthers made seemingly easy work of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the Edmonton Oilers. Do the Oilers need to get a goalie? How can the league copy Paul Maurice's squad when they have guys like Barkov, (Conn Smythe winning) Sam Bennett, Marchand, Tkachuk, and Bobrovsky? (36:25) Finally, NHL news including Troy Terry maybe being available from the Anaheim Ducks (alongside John Gibson?), upcoming CBA news (56:10), and our 2025 NHL Draft Prospect Profile as we revisit Jackson Smith (1:01:15) before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (1:10:50) - enjoy! Recorded: June 16th, 2025 Will Compton and Taylor Lewan bring the juice on this week's Bussin’ With The Boys. The guys are back with a packed episode and a killer sit-down with Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. Before Diego hops on, the boys chop it up about the newly-dropped Dad Combine vlog courtesy of Bussin' Legend, JP Hovey, how Father’s Day weekend went, and their reactions to what’s been going down in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. There’s also some solid back-and-forth about Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule going viral this past weekend, Josh Pate throwing strays at the back of the bus, and a preview of Tight End U coming up. They even touch on Paul Craig's wild kick, some Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese chatter, and give a nod to birthday boy Mitch before we hop into the interview. Once Diego joins, it’s all uphill in the best way. The guy’s got a story — from being a legit wrestler back in the day to calling his own plays in-game and leading New Mexico State to a historic win over Auburn. He talks about being overlooked coming out of high school, how he made the most of his time at NMSU, and what it’s been like transitioning to college football in the SEC at Vanderbilt. Diego then tells the behind the scenes story of the Alabama game and what it was like to upset the #1 team in the nation. The convo dives into whether he thought about entering the transfer portal again, expectations for this season, and how much Jerry Kill meant to his journey. It’s the kind of interview that makes you root for the dude, plain and simple.
