Episode 3: Callum Linnane Callum Linnane's love affair with dance began at the age of seven at his primary school in Ballarat. And his determination, perfectionist tendencies and unbreakable work ethic underpinned his rise through the ranks of The Australian Ballet to be named Principal Artist in 2022 – a role he relished from a young age. Despite this incredible achievement, Callum is a humble human, described in Harper's Bazaar as “the boy-next-door with a tinge of rock star he doesn't know he possesses. His presence walks into a room before his body does.” Callum may have climbed this mountain, but he isn't done yet, and his biggest wish is to build a better world where people are free to try new things and not ridiculed for their choices.   TWO AM I Listen Curiously CREDITS   Hosts: Jack Riewoldt and Shane McCurry   Thanks to our guest Callum Linnane:   To learn more about Callum: Callum on Instagram Callum on Facebook Callum Linnane Principal Artist, The Australian Ballet   Links from this episode: The Australian Ballet The Australian Ballet on Instagram The Australian Ballet on Facebook The Australian Ballet Wikipedia   Find TWO AM I on social media here: TWO AM I YouTube TWO AM I Instagram  TWO AM I Tik Tok TWO AM I LinkedIn TWO AM I LinktreeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I am speaking with Steven McRae, Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet, London. Steven grew up in Western Sydney, in a suburb called Plumpton, 45kms West of Sydney. His Dad was a drag car racer, and no one in the family had ever learnt to dance. In this beautifully candid conversation, Steven talks about his journey to Principal at the Royal Ballet by the age of 23— and that, it's not all as it seems; he speaks about early bullying, crippling home sickness, not always fitting in, and devastating injuries. But Steven speaks of more than that; he talks about starting his own family with his wife Elizabeth Harrod—also a dancer at the Royal Ballet, his post retirement plans, and the moment he snapped his Achilles tendon live on stage in front of 2,500 people, and how he climbed back from the impossible, to perform with the Royal Ballet once again.Steven continues to perform as a Principal Artist with the Royal Ballet in London, all the while juggling life with his wife Elizabeth and their 3 children Audrey, Frederick and Rupert. ‘Lift’ – the ballet program uplifting young people living in homelessness

Academy Award-nominated director David Petersen's latest documentary “Lift” shines a spotlight on New York Theatre Ballet's ‘LIFT' program, in which classical ballet training is used to improve the lives of young people, particularly those who are living in homeless shelters in the city. The youngsters in the movie are guided by the Ballet's Principal Artist and Artistic Director, Steven Melendez. This documentary leads him back to his own childhood shelter, in order to uncover past trauma and celebrate the joys that people experience through dancing in the face of adversity. “It's just kind of obvious to say. But they're little humans,” says Melendez of the children featured in the film. “They have their own ambitions and their own dreams and hopes and wishes, and they have their own peculiarities. And the children that we're working with through the LIFT program, you know, from these difficult backgrounds, from these transient home lives, are especially complicated figures. They're mature beyond their years, principally because they've experienced much more in the short time that they've been on Earth than others in their age bracket have.” The documentary was shot over the course of a decade, allowing viewers to experience the highs and lows of its subjects. The opportunity to be allowed to film within homeless shelters was integral to the film's success. In helming the project, Petersen learned that a sense of security is vital for these young people to feel safe. He recounts a touching moment when one of the film's subjects, Sharia, found a place to live. “It's the most joyful moment because she is just embracing the fact that she has a home. She's looking out 26 stories that she's above the city and suddenly she's like, so empowered this young 10, 11-year-old girl. And suddenly she says, you know, ‘I'm so glad I made it.' And I think there's different degrees of what we consider home. But I think if you have more security that's why we use that term ‘home and security.' When you have that security, that is a home.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Remembering Agnes De Mille with Elizabeth Ferrell and Jenna Rae Herrera Today's episode is a special one, where we look back and remember world-renowned dancer, choreographer, writer, lecturer, and director, Agnes De Mille. Agnes had a successful, yet tempestuous, career that spanned almost 70 years through the world of 20th-century American theater and ballet. We take a look at her through the eyes of Elizabeth Ferrell, formerly a member of the American Ballet Theater, and Jenna Rae Herrera, a principal artist with Ballet West. We hear their recollections of working with De Mille in the studio and performing her work, and we listen to their insights about how the course of American dance was forever changed by her. Stay tuned for a lively conversation about Agnes De Mille and her long-lasting impact; creating strong-willed American female roles. Enjoy! Key Points From This Episode: ·       Beth shares a short (but detailed) biography of Agnes De Mille; Agnes in a nutshell. ·       More about Beth, her background, and how she became part of De Mille's work. ·       Beth tells listeners about De Mille's personality (both in the studio and on stage).  ·       Jenna talks about her background in dance and career at Ballet West. ·       Jenna tells us about learning her role in Rodeo and how it helped her grow as an artist. ·       The process of learning the Rodeo material (and hearing the narrative from Agnes herself).  ·       Jenna shares her experience learning work that was made decades ago (and translating it to her body and the company). ·       We hear Beth's experience doing De Mille's work, both the physical experience and the learning process. ·       Jenna and Beth reminisce about their time performing The Cow Girl in the Rodeo ballet. ·       Why Rodeo was set on ballet companies (as opposed to other genres of dance). ·       Their thoughts on why De Mille's work has become timeless and why it's still being performed today.   “She was really ahead of her time, there's still a real push to nurture and push female choreographers and women's voices [today] — and here she is in the 1940s choosing her own music, dancers, costumes, set designs, and was calling the shots.” — Elizabeth Ferrell   Former member of American Ballet Theatre, Elizabeth Ferrell emerged as a major interpreter of the works of Agnes de Mille, having performed leading roles in De Mille's Rodeo, 3 Virgins and a Devil, The Informer, and Brigadoon. Jenna Rae Herrera is a Principal Artist with Ballet West in Salt Lake City and made her debut last year as The Cowgirl in Agnes de Mille's Rodeo. She joined the Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II Program in 2014, where she danced in Michael Pink's Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Cinderella and Dracula, and performed in contemporary works by Timothy O'Donnell, Nadia Thompson, Lee-Wei Chao, Ilya Kozadayev and Petr Zahradnícek. Since being promoted to the Company, Tripp originated the role of the Enchantress in the world premiere of Michael Pink's Beauty and The Beast, and danced in Pink's Mirror Mirror and contemporary works by Enrico Morelli, Mark Godden and Garrett Glassman.

Hello lovely yayborhood, coming to you from back in lockdown but the yay lives on in your ears! So, glad you're enjoying the first versions of Yays of our Lives, I can't wait to see it blossom as a product of this beautiful community! Our plans have been a little delayed AGAIN now that I can't be on the road this week recording some of our yayborhood heroes in person, but if these crazy times are teaching us anything, it's to be flexible and open minded so we will get there in the end! Meanwhile, back with another guest, and this one was requested by several different people in the Surv-yay. And it was super convenient for me that you all wanted to hear from a ballerina because as many of you know I was a ballerina I my first life and have actually followed this particular dancer all through her career so it was pure joy to pick her brains about going pro. Yep, we are lucky enough to have Principal Artist, Amy Harris, joining us on the show - that's the highest rank you can get at the Australian Ballet of which there are currently only 12 in total. You'll probably be able to hear how magical it was for me to be transported back into the world of ballet and I hope you share some of the magic learning about its workings too. As always, I love to dive into a world that might be new to some of you and leave you with some new knowledge of how it works and terminology BUT I fear I may have slipped too easily back into some things forgetting that it's not common knowledge so if I did leave anything out, please excuse me and shoot us any DMs to clarify. There's some footage of her dancing below too, so you can truly appreciate the absolute athleticism, grace and beauty of Amy dancing and really appreciate the art form that I can't WAIT to see return to the stage this Feb. Assuming things go to plan, the Australian Ballet will be back for its first show in a year with Summertime at the Ballet on 25th Feb at Margaret Court Arena (so cool!!) - link to tickets is below. Thanks for tuning into this month's episode. I hope you enjoyed last month's podcast where I discussed a new training concept that I have been utilising. The results were absolutely surprising so in the mean time I've been working on a heavy load Isometric + BFR training program. I've just finished the testing for that 7 week training block so I'll have them to you all soon. Again I think you'll be surprised. Onto this month's episode and a quick update around my product. I am about to update the valves which is a really nice touch to the product. The final function isn't any different but it's definitely is a good addition to the product. In today's interview, I talk to S&C coach Tony Lewis. We both live in the same town (Brisbane) but more interestingly we were both born and grew up in the same town of Ayr (small farming town in North Queensland).  I primarily got Tony on to talk about his work with BFR in ballet but he had lots of really interesting uses for BFR in other facets of his work. I am sure you'll get something out of our chat. A little about Tony: Like every kid in town, I played whatever sports were happening at that time. Started dancing in 1984 Moved to Melbourne in 1986 to study full-time dance for 4 years After graduating from the Australian Ballet School, worked with the Australian Ballet for a short period before moving to Europe, where he danced professionally for 3 years. 1993 - offered a position with Queensland Ballet 2003 -  retired from Queensland Ballet as a Principal Artist  2004 - started working full-time in the fitness industry 2010 - started my own training business 2014 - Strength Coach with the Queensland Ballet Academy 2016 - Strength Coach for the Queensland Ballet Company. 2020 - continue to learn, run my own business and work for the Queensland Ballet and the Academy.   If you want to contact him give him a follow or get to him via the following: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tonylewispt/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tonylewisPT/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/tonylewispt Email: tony@tony-lewis.com.au   For more information or to buy your own set of BFR cuffs please visit my website https://sportsrehab.com.au   Thanks for listening.   Chris

Forest and I have been friends for almost 12 years.  We were talking about art projects before I started Digital Ambiance and before he was an Art Director at Deviant Art down in LA.  He's a prolific illustrator and street artist who's skills with a paintbrush, spray can, and tablet are unparalleled among the many artists I know.  He is based in Oakland, where he leads DRAWEVERYWHERE STUDIOS on a range of creative collaborations.    We've had the opportunity to work together a number of times, but most closely on the fleet of Galactic Jungle Art Cars we built for Burning Man back in 2015.   More than just a good friend, Forest is a truly remarkable person.  After his first big break, post MFA, designing for DeviantArt, he leveled up his passion for the facilitation of community building and switched lanes out of the “art world” and into the realm of science and technology. On an adventure in the woods, his path crossed with the founders of an SF aerospace firm called Planet Labs. He boldly pitched them on the idea of painting on their spaceships, they went for it. He founded and directed Planet's Artist in Residence program for almost 5 years. As the first artist in an impressive alumni, he produced the integration of 600+ illustrations onto the sides of Planet's Dove satellites, and murals on rocket ships that would launch into orbit. As far as we know it's the first example of an art show in space!  How do you top that?   Currently, he is the Principal Artist on the Google AI Quantum team in Santa Barbara, where he has founded an Artist in Residence program in conjunction with their quantum computing team. Stearns has developed a quantum visual language for Google. This illuminated language is being applied throughout the project from site-specific murals in the laboratories and unique canvases on of each quantum computers in the data center.    A future-facing sci-fi lab filled with huge hanging machines that resemble steampunk jellyfish may seem like an unorthodox place to find artwork,    ...but it is a perfect collaboration for Stearns' illustrative works that are the love child of the nature-based High Sierra mountains and undulating abstracted Tron-Esque organisms.    When I stop and think about the trajectory of his career and his life with his beautiful partner and daughter, it's one of the most interesting paths I've ever seen an artist take to achieve success.   Stoked to share this conversation with you all, Forest is an amazing person and his success deserves to be recognized.   Links & Social Media WebPage TEDx Talk

I have a very special episode for everyone today. It's special for many reasons, but especially special to me because as a young ballerina in training at The Australian Ballet School I used to peer through the studio windows and watch Lucinda Dunn every spare moment I got. As you'll hear in this conversation, at the start, in the middle and at the end... I'm a bit of a gushing mess, because all of a sudden I realised I was sitting across from the ballerina I most admired growing up. When you've spent hours scrapbooking photos of someone and studying their every move to then years later be interviewing them for your podcast, it's a a very surreal moment. Lucinda Dunn received her early training in Sydney with Tanya Pearson before going on to win a Prix de Lausanne scholarship to study at The Royal Ballet School, London. While in London, Lucinda performed with the Birmingham Royal Ballet before returning to Australia in 1991 to join The Australian Ballet. In 2002, Lucinda was promoted to Principal Artist and danced many roles in all of the major classical ballets such as Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake and Coppélia, Sleeping Beauty, Firebird and Nutcracker. Lucinda has won numerous awards including Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Performance 2008, Helpmann Award nomination for Dance Performer of the Year in 2007 and 2004, Green Room Award for Best Female Dancer in 2005 and a Helpmann Award nominations for Best Female Dancer 2011, 2010. In 2015, Lucinda won an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer for her performance in The Australian Ballet's Manon. As Australia's longest-serving ballerina, Lucinda announced her retirement in 2014 and received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for her service to the performing arts through ballet. That same year Lucinda was appointed as the Artistic Director of the Tanya Pearson Academy and the Sydney City Youth Ballet. It might surprise some of you that Lucinda wasn't initially interested in becoming a ballerina. Inspired by her mothers performances on West End in London, her heart was actually set on Musical Theatre. We chat about this and many other topics, like how she almost left The Australian Ballet (many times!), her ridiculously high expectations of herself returning to the stage after having children and wether its harder to make it as a ballerina today... I think some of you will be shocked by how honest and candid Lucinda is with her answers, I know I was, but if I'm really honest I shouldn't have expected anything less from this stunningly unique and fiercely determined woman. I'm always attracted to this kind of person and it's no wonder I couldn't stop starring at her through the studio windows as a 15 year old... I'd like to thank Lucinda for her time during my visit to Sydney and for being such an inspiration to me when I was a young ballerina trying to find her feet in the tough world of professional ballet. Honestly, Lucinda is the epitome of grit and grace. Even though I chose a different path, I'd like to think a slice of my strength and determination came from being in her orbit all those years ago. I wish Lucinda all the very best in her new role as Artistic Director at Tanya Pearsons Academy in Sydney. When I was there to interview Lucinda I had the pleasure of watching some of the classes and it had a beautiful old-school vocational training vibe, rich in history with a heart at the nucleus. A beautiful place for any budding young ballerina with talent oozing out the studio doors. As always, enjoy this very special conversation...
