In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of this classic from director David Fincher, it's IMAX showing & its release on 4K, I'm doing a retro review of “Se7en.' Brad Pitt plays Detective David Mills, who moves to a crime-ridden city with his wife, and is paired up with retiring detective William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman. Thanks to a serial killer that appears to be preaching and forcing attrition on his victims concerning the Seven Deadly Sins, there will be no easing into the job for Detective Mills. Everything in this city is grimy, nasty and dark and so is what this killer is doing to teach seven peopkle a “lesson.” It'll take Somerset's temperance, wisdom and patience, along with Mills' drive, energy and passion to bring this killer down, if the killer doesn't take them, or a loved one, out first. This is the first of three films that Brad Pitt and David Fincher made together and it also made Fincher a top tier director. “Se7en” also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, Richard Roundtree, Reg E. Cathey, Peter Crombie, Hawthorne James, Richard Schiff and Kevin Spacey.    Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

But we remember it was the guy who was a Hobbit, and it had the kid from "Stand By Me" who gets a leech stuck to his balls, and the kid from "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" & "Adventures in Babysitting". Consisting of how the movie was made, where it was filmed, and how fun it was to work alongside the legendary R/ Lee Ermey. What is there to know about this movie?  Essentially, the movie is fun to watch, the non-stop action entertaining, and the actors performed exceptionally well. To this day, The Frighteners is still one of my favorites as it continues to move up my list of my Top 25. If you have not seen this movie, sit your butt down in front of the television now and watch it! I promise that you will not be disappointed. Each actor delivers their character with promise and surmise as I am thoroughly impressed, not only with the actors but with the dialogue and the movie itself. Episode 18 - Full Metal Jacket is a 1987 Vietnam War movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. This is a Vietnam Movie like no other that follows the recruits from the hellish days of boot camp at Parriss Island to the killing fields of Vietnam. No movie had shown the life of a recruit and the boot camp hell they endured before and Full Metal Jacket certainly pulled no punches.Led by their brutal Gunnery Sargent Hartman, recruits, Joker, Pyle and Cowboy find out that war certainly is hell and that is even before you set foot on enemy soil. This is a movie of two very distinct parts with the first half being set in boot camp, this is an almost flawless 50 minutes of movie making as Kubrick takes you inside the minds of the marines in training. The second half takes place in Vietnam and whilst it never quite lives up to the first half of the movie it's brilliant nonetheless. This is a long time favourite of the BTW team and we had a ball revisiting it. We hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did recording it.

This episode goes deep into a comment that Chris Carter made some time ago about how an episode about stigmata "deals with faith, not religion with a capital 'R' or Catholicism with a capital 'C'". Mostly about how absurd that is. Especially as this episode became a minor storyline milestone in the exploration of Scully's faith as a Roman Catholic.  Still, if you're interested in R. Lee Ermey, like David is. Or stigmata and lightly researched details on the Catholic church, like me, this is a fun episode.  Oh, we discuss boiling cow urine for a ridiculous amount of time. Apparently, they did that in The 13th Warrior? A movie Daive swears by.  I realized upon relistening I didn't give the author of the stigmata paper I referenced. Looking back, I still can't find the name, but here's the resource if you want to check it out: Blood, Gender and Power in Christiantity and Judaism.  Turns out, it's not a thesis paper either. Just a project, based on the URL. I wonder what kind of grade they received. Also, in the episode I didn't reference Judaism, so I went back and Ctrl + F "Judaism" on the project. 0/0 results. Interesting title. So, I researched "non-Christian stigmatics" and the Stigmata wikipedia page. Nothing on Judaism. Now I'm really curious about that title. I wish there was contact information connected to the project... The rest of the episode explores sainthood, references: How to Become a Saint, and how Michael Berryman is a phenomenal actor who shouldn't have been typecast.  So, join us. And let me know what if you wrote that project. I'm super curious.

More than 25 years after Tobe Hooper created one of the most iconic horror films of all time with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” action movie producer Michael Bay saw an opportunity to capitalize on the property after starting his own studio called Platinum Dunes that was created specifically with low budget films in mind. Eventually, Bay’s company purchased the rights to the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and the work began on reviving the franchise. Rumors abounded that Tobe Hooper would be involved with the project but ultimately a new director — Marcus Nispel and a first time screenwriter named Scott Kosar were brought on board to create an entirely new version of the film. The Sawyer family was gone. Replaced by the Hewitt’s and many of the characters changed as well but one thing stayed the same — Leatherface was back. The remake was finally released in 2003 and after a small $9.5 million budget, the film raked in more than $100 million at the box office. Three years later, Platinum Dunes returned with “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,” which was a prequel to the remake film from 2003. A new director and writer were brought on board with several returning cast members from the Hewitt family including R. Lee Ermey and Andrew Bryniarski as Thomas Hewitt aka Leatherface. Despite a bigger budget, the film failed to find the same kind of success as the remake, although the movie was still profitable. Unfortunately, critics didn’t find much to enjoy about the prequel and plans for a third film in the franchise were scrapped. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead as part of our special “Texas Chainsaw” franchise series, we’re going to look back at “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remake from 2003 and the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” from 2006…

The Plotaholics Podcast: Movie Reviews

It's another week of The Plotaholics Podcast, and today, Shane and Bryan explore Stanley Kubrick's 1987 military dark comedy, Full Metal Jacket. In this week's episode, we discuss what feels like two separate films edited together to make a two-hour film classic starring Matthew “Just as good as McConaughey and Broderick” Modine, Vincent “Kingpin” D'Onofrio, Adam “Not related to Alec” Baldwin, and the late, great R. Lee Ermey. Discussion of this film definitely means a trigger warning is in effect as the film features casual and active racism as well as intense depictions of violence. That said, the film is an amazing piece of filmmaking. There are also (apparently) tons of parallels to Community, The Office, and Family Guy.  At least, Shane and Bryan keep bringing those shows up in their discussion. So, sit back, relax, leave a review, and enjoy The Plotaholics' take on Full Metal Jacket. And be sure to like, share, and leave a review!Support the show (https://plotaholics.com)

Today we salute one of the most recognizable United States Marines to ever wear the uniform: Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey. “Gunny”, as he liked to be called, became the essence of the Marines in the eyes of the American public, when he stepped into the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in the 1987 Stanley Kubrick film "Full Metal Jacket". R. Lee started life on a Kansas farm in 1944 and in 1958 moved with his family to a small town in Washington State where he got into repeated scrapes with the local law until a judge offered him a choice: jail or enlisting in the military; he chose to enlist. R. Lee Ermey went to Boot Camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and then served in the aviation support field until he was assigned back to MCRD as a Drill Instructor from 1965 to 1967. Then-Sergeant Ermey was stationed in Okinawa in support of MWSG-17 and in 1968 was sent to Vietnam where he spent 14 months In Country. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant during his time in Okinawa but in 1972 was medically discharged as a result of numerous injuries. Ermey then moved to the Philippines where he attended the University of Manila on the G.I. Bill and had his first brush with Hollywood when he was asked to be the technical advisor on Francis Ford Coppola’s "Apocalypse Now" being filmed there. But Ermey changed the movie world forever when he was hired as a technical advisor to Stanley Kubrick's film "Full Metal Jacket". When Kubrick saw Ermey's instructional tape on how to act like a drill instructor, he knew that no one else could play the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. R. Lee Ermey was granted the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant by The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. Jones in 2002. He went on to act in dozens of movies and television projects, playing military roles, cops, judges, and authority figures in movies like “Seven”, “Mississippi Burning”, “Miami Vice”, and many more. He also voiced the plastic green soldiers in all of the “Toy Story” movies as well as characters in “Sponge Bob”, “The Simpsons”, and “Family Guy”. On April 15, 2018 at the age of 74, Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee Ermey passed away from complications related to pneumonia in a Santa Monica Hospital. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington D.C.

It was a role and a character he would reprise in numerous TV shows and commercials from the History Channel to Geico. But did you know Mr. Ermy was a Kansas boy?
