In this week's episode, Dr Louise Newson is joined by her good friend Dr Rupy Aujla, a medical doctor, nutritionist, and founder of The Doctor's Kitchen for a deep dive into his new book, Healthy High Protein.   Together, they explore how our relationship with food evolves over time, and why protein and fibre play a far more essential role in our health than many of us realise. Dr Rupy shares how inflammation acts like your body's ‘internal campfire', providing warmth and protection when in balance, but becoming harmful if it burns too intensely.  Whilst working as a newly qualified junior doctor, Dr Rupy faced a life-changing health scare when he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that prompted him to reassess his lifestyle and approach to nutrition.   Although diet is not a standalone treatment, the conversation between the experts emphasises the meaningful role diet can play in supporting overall health and restoring balance. Additionally, Dr Rupy shares practical tips on becoming a “good guesstimator” of your protein needs at each meal, along with three simple questions to ask yourself daily to support overall wellbeing.  Available to watch on YouTube   To learn more about Dr Rupy, visit his Instagram: here and check out The Doctor's Kitchen Podcast, here and to listen to his previous conversation with Dr Louise in 2022, click here.   His Doctor's Kitchen app has lots of science backed recipes, all designed with the latest research in nutrition, and you can even choose specific health goals to focus on, such as to supporting gut health, brain health and lower inflammation. Often misunderstood as simply being about muscles and bodybuilding, protein is, in fact, the fundamental building block of life – forming everything from our DNA and skin to our enzymes and hormones. And today's returning guest believes that many of us are simply not eating enough. Dr Rupy Aujla is a London-based doctor, nutritionist and founder of The Doctor's Kitchen, who is on a mission to make healthy cooking accessible and enjoyable for all. He has authored multiple best-selling cookbooks, including his very latest: Healthy High Protein: Supercharge Your Energy, Feel Stronger and Live Longer.   In this conversation, Rupy challenges the traditional protein recommendations and why he believes that many of us should be focussing on increasing our consumption. He shares how muscle wasting affects around 40% of us as we get older and he explains that this muscle wastage is not just about losing strength – but also affects our metabolism, energy levels and overall wellbeing.    We also delve into the protein content of our breakfasts, the differences between animal and plant proteins, the potential downsides of protein powders, how protein needs change as we get older, and why increasing our protein intake can often reduce our snacking and ultra-processed food consumption.   Whether you're dealing with mid-morning energy crashes, looking to support healthy ageing, or simply wanting to feel better, Rupy's practical wisdom transforms protein-focused eating into something manageable and enjoyable for all. Why has nutrition - something that should be so simple - become so complicated? With 70% of our diet now consisting of ultra-processed foods and conflicting advice everywhere we look, is it any wonder we're confused about what to eat? Today's returning guest is my good friend, Dr Rupy Aujla, who is on a mission to make healthy cooking accessible and enjoyable for all. He's a medical doctor, nutritionist and founder of The Doctor's Kitchen and author of five best-selling books. After learning about nutritional medicine, he was able to reverse his condition using a food and lifestyle approach. I'm often asked by colleagues and patients for a full breakdown of what I say in clinic with patients with type 2 diabetes or who are at higher risk of this condition to help them better manage it before medications. But it takes time. And no GP in the NHS or elsewhere has over an hour to explain this in enough detail such that people can understand how to take action themselves. The recommendations for medical professionals is for them to explore diet and lifestyle options before turning to pharmaceuticals for the management of type 2 diabetes. But with less than 10 minutes per appointment, this is an impossible task. This is the basis of today's podcast. If I had an hour with you, or your loved one, this is how I would explain what type 2 diabetes is, why sugar control is so important and what things you can do to prevent or better manage the condition and even potentially put it into remission.I would love to know your comments and feedback on today's episode, so if you have any suggestions, please leave a comment on YouTube and do share this with anyone who you feel could benefit from the information.

A number of lifestyle related illnesses have uncontrolled inflammation at its core. Whether that's obesity, heart disease or even dementia, inflammation appears to play a role.I've done a free mini-series on inflammation that you can find on my newsletter, where I talk about the big drivers of inflammation (namely gut health, exercise, sleep and mindset) and we've done a number of episodes on inflammation on the podcast to determine what it is and why we'd all be better reducing it. And on todays podcast I wanted to zoom in on spices in particular. These are by no means the only spices with inflammation reducing potential, but possibly the ones I used most commonly and are likely to have the biggest evidence base.Ginger, Turmeric and Cinnamon are my go to and I get at least one of these spices in my diet daily.

From blood sugar and gut health to inflammation ginger has many people espousing its benefits. There are tons of folklore remedies using ginger for indigestion, headaches, infections. But is there any science to back this up?In the Doctor's Kitchen we want people to learn about the history of food, the nutritional benefits of ingredients so everyone can make an informed decision about their dietWhether you choose to include more or less ginger in your diet is completely up to you, but I hope we can help our healthy foodie listeners to appreciate the science of this incredible spice.Despite the poor evidence or lack thereof in some cases, there are some intangible benefits with all foods whether the science is there or not. Foods evoke memories, which impacts our emotions, our psychological states. There are many things that we can't determine through looking at a clinical trial in isolation. So don't be disheartened and remember to be intuitive about what you feel works for youI do love cooking with ginger for its health and flavour properties. I add it to curries, stews and teas. And as we look to the science and discover more about its health benefits, I think you're going to be inspired to use it more regularly in your diet too.

On this week's podcast Dr Louise is joined by Dr Rupy Aujla, founder of The Doctor's Kitchen, which aims to inspire and educate about the joy of food and the medicinal effects of eating well. Dr Rupy shares his thoughts on how to best enjoy a healthy and fulfilling diet and looks at some of the challenges food can bring during the perimenopause and menopause, but also how it can be a time to rethink and set new nutrition habits. While the new year is often a time to set goals or resolutions, Dr Rupy believes that consistency is the key to success and it can come through small steps, such as simply adding on vegetable to every single meal. Finally, Dr Rupy shares his three top tips for healthy eating: Master one meal that you're proud of and make it a solid base to then adapt, add twists with different vegetables, flavour bases, herbs, etc. If you have a child who doesn't like a particular ingredient, don't force it because that will introduce animosity towards that ingredient. When they're older, they may have developed different taste buds that allow them to appreciate it better. Aim for 90/10 because you probably will get to 80/20. And if you do have a cheeky take out, indulge, allow yourself to indulge without any guilt, particularly as it pertains to food, and then make yourself a pact to get back on it the following day. I personally love my airfryer, I've been using it at home and in the Doctor's Kitchen studio since the start of the year, but can they be considered a ‘healthier' cooking method? This is a question I'm often posed online so we did some research and looked at a few studies. Air fryers aren't a new invention, in fact they've been around for a number of years but the popularity of them has soared over the last 2 years. The way air fryers cook foods is by circulating hot hair containing tiny droplets of oil around the foods. It actually mimics the effect of submerging food in hot oil but using significantly less oil. So, it allows quick and even cooking and creates crispy coatings on the outside of the food, with less calories, hence the reputation for being a ‘healthier alternative' to frying. On todays episode we looked at the pros and cons of airfrying across a number of domains including:Cost and conveniencePreservation of nutrientsThe detrimental impact of excessive heat on the oils and fat usedHow they compare with other methods including oven roasting and sauteing The environmental impact considering the materials they are made fromPlus our overall take on how I'm now using my airfryer and newer gadgets to look out for!

Today we're wrapping up our podcast year with 5 impactful conversations from 2023. This year has been an incredible journey learning more about food and medicine and I hope you've found the lessons from the podcast as fascinating as I have!First off I share a snippet from my conversation with Dr Robert Lustig (#209 Why a calorie is not a calorie) about whether you can you be a sugar aholic? Robert's passion for this subject is palpable, and perhaps after hearing Dr. Robert Lustig, Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, talk on the subject today, you might be inclined to review your sugar intake yourself? The realisation of our dropping attention spans is worrying. You don't have to ask many people in your network to realise that this phenomenon is not unique. This conversation I had with Johann Hari (#193 Why you can't focus) encouraged me to inject mind wandering into my daily routine.Jessie Inchauspé is now a global phenomena and has influenced millions of people to become more conscious about the impact of sugar spikes on their wellbeing. In this snippet (#144 Flatten Your Glucose Levels), we focus on Jessie's backstory and what led her to pursue a career in science and the revelation of how her own glucose rollercoasters were affecting her health.Professor David Nutt is at the forefront of psychedelic research and on this podcast (#211 Psychedelics and the new era of Psychiatry) he breaks down what these molecules are, the research behind them and why he believes they have great promise for mental health and beyond. And lastly, but by no means least, my conversation with Sheila Dillon (#156 The Power of Food). Sheila's realisation around food and medicine, touching on her own experience of cancer, her sisters and the phenomenal impact of the food programme to spark ideas and challenge dogma in our crazy complicated world of food.

And if you're averse to the idea of going through the effort of having to find someone to share a meal with, research shows it has benefits!Recent studies found that regularly eating with others is linked to feeling happier, more satisfied with life and trusting of others. For children and adolescents, frequent family meals were associated with better health outcomes. But why? We'll talk about the evidence based reasons for the health benefits of sharing food around a table, including the evolutionary link as an adaptive benefit from our hunter-gatherer ancestors to the psychological reasons as well as practical benefits!I'll certainly be eating with friends twice a week from now on! He has succeeded in life because of his innate warmth and genuine intent to make the world a better place. He talked to me about the challenge of moving from being a practising Doctor in the NHS to being an entrepreneur and businessman.  In this conversation you will hear about: - How tricky it can be to form a new identity and a new sense of legitimacy in a new role. Particularly if it presses your buttons of ‘How much am I allowed' and when it challenges our values of what is ‘good.' - The challenges of building a business that is in public view, and therefore open to the opinions of others. How hard it is to hold trust in one's own purpose and meaning.  - Fascinating insights into what influences us as adults, is what has been modelled for us as a child.  -The strengths and particular nuances of being born a British Asian, how that influences him and inspires him to go forward, and yet his parents wish to protect him from the very risks they took.  - How developing our true self and finding our own identity; sometimes we have to go away in order to be able to come back.  - The amazing power of a gratitude practice. You will hear how this simple practice has shaped and supported Rupy to enable him to be the man he is today. - How gratitude can influence you to reframe what is difficult or negative to something that brings an opportunity. Aligning trust as a guiding force – ‘even not right moves are right moves.' Trust enables him to tap into his innate guiding force and find his path.  - Love is the strongest medicine; how love gives him strength being ‘Held by the hands of the people that love you.' - We discuss the power of food, it is generative as a way of loving family, friends and neighbours. In this MEGAphone episode we will be shouting out the creator of The Doctor's Kitchen, Dr. Rupy Aujla. He wrote a really well done article outlining the basics of eating for the purposes of mitigating the negative responses of inflammation in our diets. I definitely think it's worth a shout out and a share. Eating for Inflammation It's amazing how many times I see ‘inflammation' as a concept coming up in different medical specialities as one of the potential causes of disease. It has almost become a unifying theory that links conditions of the modern world to our lifestyles. You might think I'm just talking just about swollen ankles that happens after an injury, or the redness that surrounds a cut on the skin, but high blood pressure, heart disease, dementia, diabetes and mental health problems all have links to an imbalance of inflammation in the body at a cellular level.  References:Dr. Rupy Aujlah IG: doctors_kitchen  The Doctor's Kitchen Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-doctors-kitchen-podcast/id1316938642 Book: Doctor's Kitchttps://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0008395411/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thedocskit-21&creative=6738&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0008395411&linkId=67b4c611c35989b3c9a6091abb23c1aahttps://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0008395411/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thedocskit-21&creative=6738&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0008395411&linkId=67b4c611c35989b3c9a6091abb23c1aahen 3-2-1 Cookbook   Affiliates:Brain.fm App (First month Free, then 20% off subscription) Discount Code: coachdamien_sd   Links:IG:  @coachdamien_sd @damienrayevans @livinthedream_podcast YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS6VuPgtVsdBpDj5oN3YQTgFB: https://www.facebook.com/coachdamienSD/

Do you believe that food can be medicine? Most of us would agree that a healthy diet – whatever that means to the individual – is vital to our wellbeing. But can the right foods actually prevent and even cure illness? I know what I think, and my guest today not only agrees, he provides living proof! Dr Rupy Aujla was just 24 when he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a heart condition rare in someone of that age. But it wasn't Rupy's years of medical training or even his consultant's advice that turned his life around. It was only when he listened to his mother, looked to his diet, and transformed his eating that he was able to defy medical expectations and reverse his condition. This experience led Rupy to do a deep dive into how this ‘impossible' feat was achieved and in this conversation, he shares some of the explanations he's uncovered, including a reduction in inflammation and an improvement in the health of his gut. Back in 2015, he founded The Doctor's Kitchen, a movement to inspire and educate people about nutritional medicine and help them eat well every day. He not only shares recipes but also explains the clinical research behind them and how they can help you with your health. And he does this via his bestselling books, podcasts and social media posts. Recently, Rupy has taken the decision to pause his NHS career and focus on making healthy eating more accessible by launching the Doctor's Kitchen app, which is set to become a must-have resource for finding research-backed recipes tailored to your personal likes and health goals. It is available now on the App store.Rupy is a great friend and our lives have followed a similar path in many ways. We talk in-depth about the concept of food as medicine, as well as the polarising nature of discussions around diet. We also consider identity when it comes to career choice, and what it really means to be a doctor in the modern world. If you can help hundreds of thousands of people live better through your public platforms, is that any less meaningful than helping patients in a surgery or hospital each day? There's lots to think about in this conversation and I hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed chatting. Thanks to our sponsors:https://www.athleticgreens.com/livemorehttps://www.leafyard.com/livemorehttps://www.vivobarefoot.com/livemoreOrder Dr Chatterjee's new book Happy Mind, Happy Life: UK version: https://amzn.to/304opgJ, US & Canada version: https://amzn.to/3DRxjgpShow notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/269DISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Dr Rupy Aujla was in his mid-20s and beginning his career as a doctor when heart problems caused him to re-evaluate what he thought he knew about health, nutrition and medicine. Having previously rejected his parents' influences of traditional Indian medicine, Dr Rupy began delving deeper into some of those concepts and the science of nutrition that he wasn't taught at medical school. In this episode, he talks to Dr Louise Newson about the principles of healthy eating, how a busy lifestyle and your environment often make it challenging to find and choose healthy, affordable foods, and the experts share their concerns around childhood obesity, anxiety around food, and the particular metabolic changes faced by those going through peri/menopause due to a lack of estrogen. Dr Rupy's 3 tips for improving your nutrition: Start with making a small change to your diet by adding just one more fruit, vegetable, nut or seed, at every meal if possible. Have a back-up healthy meal that's easy to prepare, or stored in the freezer, for those times when you are tired and lacking motivation. Try to reflect what foods you really like but find a healthier version of it. For example, if you love pasta, add 3 different vegetables to any pasta recipe. Life and Soul by Emma Forbes

I am joined for my final episode of Life and Soul by the culinary queen, Prue Leith. She's a cookery writer, restaurateur, novelist, Bake Off judge and advisor to the government's review on hospital food. In this episode, she tells me how she treated some lucky care home staff to her cooking during lockdown as she couldn't bear to only make supper for two and she explains the reasons why she is so passionate about the campaign for better hospital food. I ask her what it was like to join the Great British Bake Off (spoiler alert: her main concern was working with Paul Hollywood) and how she called Mary Berry for some advice. Prue also tells us about her new Channel 4 show with the gorgeous Dr Rupy Aujla where they attempt to transform the food and shopping habits of four families and tackle our issue with food waste. I couldn't think of two better people to come to the rescue! It was a real honour to talk to Prue - she's an incredibly busy woman and she definitely won't be slowing down anytime soon!

We all get it, right? Eat your vegetables, get a sweat on, drop the soda and stay away from the freakin' donuts. Simple right? Then why the hell does it feel so hard to do those things? And more importantly, why are we facing a food health crisis? And I'm not talking about a shortage of food. I'm talking about a shortage of quality food leading to a massive scale of people being overweight. In fact, according to the NHS 2018' “Statistics on Obesity, Physical Activity and Diet – England”, one in four adults are now classified as obese and 1 in 5 children aged 10 are classified as obese. That's a scary statistic right? And in the US, it is said that today's children will live shorter lives than their parents because of obesity. But thankfully, there are people out there fighting to turn things around and help us make sense of what the hell we can do to get healthier. That's why I'm super excited to share with you today's very special episode. Chances are you've seen his face spread across magazines, newspapers, tube stations and billboards… That's right today's guest is Dr. Rupy Aujla, a GP in the NHS, a passionate home cook and lifestyle medic who is best known for his own podcast, Instagram account and recipe book, The Doctor's Kitchen, dedicated to the evidence based behind nutritional advice. What I love about Rupy is that he believes that what you chose to put on your plate is the most important health intervention you can make. And it's so incredibly refreshing to hear a GP preach the benefits of simple healthy food. As you'll hear in today's episode, Rupy went through his own health scare as a young medic that made him take a serious look at the food we eat and the impact it has on our health. But it wasn't until Rupy was working as an A&E doctor in Australia that he set up the doctor's kitchen as an Instagram account, posting recipes with clinic research behind the ingredients used to help his patients live a healthier lifestyle. What happened next blew his mind. Rupy has since launched a best selling cook book and has been featured on pretty much every single major newspapers, website, magazine and prime time TV, and I really believe his message needs to be heard loud and clear. What I loved about our conversation is that Rupy was courageous enough to open up and talk about what it's really like to try and build a movement as well as share the challenges that come with having a massive online social media following. I know you'll get a lot out our conversation and I can't wait to hear your favourite quote(s) from today's episode over on social media by tagging me @markleruste and #theunconventionalists!
