Feeding more San Antonians each week than the capacity of the Alamodome and AT&T Center combined, there's no shortage of work for the San Antonio Food Bank. That's why CEO Eric Cooper is actively speaking to Congress and Governor Greg Abbott, hoping to improve and retain programs that serve more than 120,000 people per week. Cooper is this week's guest on the ‘San Antonio's Voice' podcast, talking with Randy Beamer about his increased lobbying on behalf of San Antonio during the pandemic. They also talk about the new faces receiving food and why some unemployed families still can't get fed. The reason may surprise you. Also in the podcast, Cooper blames low paying jobs and racism for San Antonio's hunger problem, adding that it's wrong the Food Bank serves as a safety net caused by them. Plus, the former missionary and Boy Scout reveals his personal experience with homelessness and how it helped change his life. Cooper joined the San Antonio Food Bank in 2001 as the youngest executive director in the history of the organization. The Food Bank helps provide food to Texans in a 16-county service area and employs 250 people. Cooper serves on a variety of committees focused on food and nutrition. Before arriving in San Antonio, Cooper was a product donations manager at the North Texas Food Bank. How do we meet the increased need COVID-19 is causing in our country? San Antonio Food Bank President and CEO Eric Cooper and Hotel Emma chef and culinary director John Brand talk to Debbie and Billy Shore about the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their city. Billy Shore asks Cooper about the now iconic image of a massive line of cars outside the San Antonio Food Bank in April. “I saw the line and I just panicked. I thought we were going to run out of food,” says Cooper. However, they were able to meet the need that day. “I waited for the last car to be served. I went to apologize… but I was greeted with this resiliency and gratitude that was amazing,” he shares. “The biggest thing we’ve all learned is compassion - compassion for each other,” observes Brand, who used his restaurant to feed first-responders during the first months of the pandemic. “Where a lot of the world has retreated, we are able to connect on a deeper level with food,” he explains. The guests discuss the larger problem of hunger in America. “We never believed that we were going to solve hunger with a canned good. Hunger is a symptom of poverty and people in poverty have lots of barriers. It can’t be fish or teaching how to fish, it has to be both,” says Cooper. Listen to this important conversation with two San Antonio anti-hunger crusaders bearing witness to the toll the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their community.

On March 30th, 2020—as COVID-19 locked millions of panicked Americans in their homes—the homeless in Las Vegas were forced to sleep in white-chalked parking lots as the city's gleaming and empty casino-castles loomed above them and whose closed windows hid empty beds that could have provided warmth and safety. On April 11th, ten thousand cars lined up for a San Antonio Food Bank—the aerial photos of which became viral online, spreading to each digital device as rapidly as the virus had taken over our lives. We need a new human rights more than ever. For this episode, Matt & Jesse discuss the COVID-19 Pandemic and the collapse of our Old Bad World as the New Badder, Sadder World floods its diseased blood into our digital igloos. The co-hosts will talk about how the COVID-19 chaos not only deepens the contradictions of capitalism but also makes the rights to a dignified life all the more urgent, as people struggle with food insecurity (or abject hunger), unpaid rent and mortgages, the mass loss of healthcare access due to millions of Americans joining the outcaste status of the unemployed, and the incalculable cruelty of student debt piling up, impossible to pay. While these attacks on human dignity have been increasing under the Age of Bio-death that is Neoliberalism, COVID-19 makes clear a momentous tactical urgency to demand The Golden Square: the full emancipation from want by creating a global guarantee for the universal rights to food, shelter, healthcare and education. Jesse & Matt will briefly chart the carcass of Covid Capitalism while spending more time mapping the way from the storm to reach the shoreline of a dignified world: one we can still achieve through bold tactics, strategies and collective will. To say the pandemic changed our lives is a major understatement. Many lost their jobs and that is causing major hardships. Paying utilities and even buying food has become concerning to a lot of Texans including the most vulnerable populations. In response, AARP Texas has donated nearly $18,000 to support food banks across the Lone Star State. Some of those funds went to the Houston and San Antonio Food Banks. During the AARP Texas Prepare to Care Podcast, Brian Greene, President, and CEO of the Houston Food Bank and Eric Cooper, President and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank spoke to host Eddie Orum about the need for food and donations, where donations will go and who can access this service.
We often think of the feeding of the 5,000 as a story about Jesus miraculously providing food, which it is. But we also need to understand Jesus provided because his followers did not. Jesus was not inconvenienced by needy people, he welcomed them. Jesus also asks his followers to care about people in need and provide for them. Next Steps: • Take an inventory of your resources and find a creative way to help someone in need this week. • Donate or volunteer this week at the church's food pantry, West Avenue Compassion or the San Antonio Food Bank. • Prepare a meal for someone in need. San Antonio weathers the COVID-19 crisis thanks to the efforts of Eric Cooper and his team. Over almost two decades at the San Antonio Food Bank, Cooper has led the growth of the food bank from 10 million pounds delivered, to over 61 million per year. Now, as the crisis tests the resources and resolve of the community, Cooper joins SABJ reporter Jeanette Garcia to give us an update.
Eric Cooper moved to San Antonio in 2001 to take over the San Antonio Food Bank and get it on the right path. In his time at the SA Food Bank, the non-profit has raise a lot of money, added many programs, and has made it their mission to provide food for today, food for tomorrow and food for a lifetime. Eric Cooper is heartwarming, loving, and genuinely cares about his mission and the San Antonio Food Bank's success. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello and Bienvenido, San Antonio. Welcome to The Alamo Hour, discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right. Welcome to The Alamo Hour. Today's guest is Eric Cooper. Eric is the executive director of the San Antonio Food Bank and currently serving in somewhat of a role as a little bit of a national spokesperson for food and security as a result of the crisis and as a result of some press that San Antonio got. He joined the San Antonio Food Bank in 2001 and has since taken it from really being on somewhat of a tenuous footing to really a robust, important, and surprisingly, oddly, well-funded nonprofit in the city. I was doing some research on you. Before this crisis, 58,000 people a week got help. 77 million meals a year, to me, kind of a nerd about things. 2% overhead for y'alls budget. That's something that unless people really pay attention, you don't realize how important that is and how really a compliment to your management skills. Thank you for being here. I want to get into some of these things, but thank you for being here. I can't imagine your time commitment, so I'm glad we got a little bit of it. Eric Cooper: Hey, super excited to be on the show. It's a great city and we're just so privileged to be a part of it. Justin: I think that's a great city. That's why I started this whole thing. You and I were sort of joking how you got these San Antonio stories. I moved here and I've met a weird, fascinating array of characters and I was hoping to share that through this show. We haven't met before, but you're in such a big spotlight right now. I knew about the San Antonio Food Bank. I've learned so much more about it, so I want to talk to you about it. First, I'm going to put you through sort of our top 10 list we go through to get some color commentary on who you are as a person. I've read a bunch of your interviews before you got here today. I want to-- Eric: Sorry about that. [chuckles] Justin: Well, a lot of it, I don't want to retrace steps. Some of it, I want to get some new information. When and why did you move to San Antonio? Eric: Well, I've been in food banking for about eight years. I actually got my start in Salt Lake City at the Utah Food Bank and then made my way back home to North Texas. I grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There was an opportunity to serve with the North Texas Food Bank which, at that time, they had their facility in South Oak Cliff. I was there a couple of years and had watched as the San Antonio Food Bank somewhat struggled. We went through about four CEOs in a two-year period. Two of them had gotten fired and the other two had quit. The board was struggling. The food bank was struggling. I figured I couldn't screw it up any worse and they offered me the job at that point. I became their youngest executive director. I love an opportunity and I just saw such an opportunity to serve people in need. I knew I was going to dedicate my life towards putting food on the table for families. As I had traveled South Texas and seeing some of our border communities, it's some of the most extreme poverty in the United States. I knew I wanted to serve an area that had that need. When the opportunity arose, the board...

By Felipe Aguilar & Richard Hunt In the six weeks since the COVID-19 virus pandemic hit America, more than 30-million people have lost their jobs and filed for unemployment benefits. Along with loss of income, comes a need to adjust the family spending. How to pay a mortgage or rent, buy food, and target bills must be figured out. For some, food immediately becomes a major concern. The modern-day term for it is “food insecurity.” In this report, we take you to Texas, where the San Antonio Food Bank, like other food banks across America, is making a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of people in a 16-county region. To give you an idea of the need, this food bank held a special event – a “pop up distribution” at Traders Village, a 100-acre marketplace/swap-meet near Lackland Air Force Base, with plenty of parking. The food bank was well-prepared for 6,000 families to drive up… instead they saw 10,000!
