In this episode, we discuss how mental health is in quite a spot right now. More than 40 percent of Americans recently said they were struggling with their mental health, leading the CDC to call the situation a “crisis.” Part of the issue is that we're coming out of a global pandemic that shifted our habits in a way that wasn't great for our outlook. For example, we spent more time sedentary, indoors, and connected to the cloud and less time active, outside, and connected with people. The good news is many of these problems have solutions. Just as many pandemic behaviors led to mental malaise, we can develop new behaviors that make us happier. There are many options, but Rucking Training is one hell of a way to do so. It ticks many boxes that years of research indicate will boost our mental health. References:Michael Easter Books:The Comfort CrisisThe Scarcity Brainhttps://www.twopct.com/Brain.fm App(First month Free, then 20% off subscription)Discount Code: coachdamiensdCaldera Lab Skin Carewww.calderalab.comDiscount Code: CoachDLinks:IG:@coachdamien_sd@damienrayevans@livinthedream_podcast YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS6VuPgtVsdBpDj5oN3YQTgFB:https://www.facebook.com/coachdamienSD/

We become fooled into believing that progress (and happiness) is linear - both in running and life. When you're experiencing a ‘high' or extended period of positivity, enjoy it, but understand that ‘low' moments will follow.  This week's episode dives into the important, often overlooked aspects of mental health, specifically as they relate to running and following a big accomplishment. Our discussion centers around ideas, such as…  Why we need to center our running around values (not results). The importance of curiosity, community, and performance standards in your training. How we fall into the unconscious desire for a feedback loop, where we rely more on the external rewards than the internal benefits - which are what got us started in the first place! Why do you run? Our training should empower life, not hinder it. We hope that this episode provides you with the tools necessary to build a positive relationship with your training, racing, and performance goals. David Juncos is a clinical psychologist, author and performance coach who specialises in music performance anxiety. His treatment approach includes the use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and he has presented his research on this subject on an international scale. He is a faculty member at the Voice Study Centre and his book, Act for Musicians: A Guide for Using Acceptance and Commitment Training to Enhance Performance, Overcome Performance Anxiety and Improve Well-being, is available for purchase now. KEY TAKEAWAYS David is a musician at heart and in his work as a psychologist naturally gravitated towards musicians – this led to his interest in the area of music performance anxiety (MPA). When you have social anxiety, you have a fear of doing things in front of others. When you combine that fear with other symptoms that are highly distressing, you have a disorder. The disorder is not just the presence of symptoms but the presence of symptoms plus distress over having symptoms. People with performance anxiety experience many different symptoms including: physiological arousal symptoms such as tachycardia and shortness of breath; cognitive symptoms, so what your mind is doing when anxious; and behavioural symptoms. Behavioural symptoms cover avoidant or anxious behaviours such as not making eye contact during a performance or positioning yourself further away from the audience. ACT is part of a wave of newer behavioural psychotherapies that have become popular in the last 20 or 30 years. ACT encourages people to learn to coexist with anxious thoughts rather than try to eliminate them. The aim is to create a neutral relationship with anxiety so that you're not in an adversarial tug-of-war role with yourself and your anxiety.  BEST MOMENTS  ‘There was a lack of good methodological rigour in how these psychotherapies were being studied in the lab' ‘What your mind is doing when anxious is worrying about making a mistake and worrying about the implications and making it' ‘Being female unfortunately makes you more likely to have MPA'   EPISODE RESOURCES   BAST Training   Guest Website: actformusicians.com hptherapy.com http://www.hptherapy.com/OurPsychotherapists.en.html#DavidJ Social Media: Research Gate: researchgate.net/profile/David-Juncos-2 Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-juncos-psy-d-b688a53b/ Relevant Links & Mentions: Voice Study Centre: voicestudycentre.com Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep 76. This week's guest has made it her mission to open up the conversation on mental health in the performing arts. Raffaella Covino has spent the past ten years working on the West End and internationally as a Dance Captain and Swing. She is also the founder and director of applause for thought which offers accessible mental health training and support to people in the performing arts. Raffaella joins Bronwyn on Singing Teachers' Talk to chat about all things mental health and what training you as a singing teacher can get.    KEY TAKEAWAYS After dealing with her own mental health issues, Raffaella found a passion for helping people overcome their mental health struggles. It was as if her eyes had been opened to the signs that someone is struggling and unwilling to talk about it. This led to the creation of Applause for Thought.  Applause for thought was launched on February 3rd 2019 and is now a triple award-winning Community Interest Company that facilitates lower-cost mental health, Support, Talks and Workshops, Accredited Mental Health Training, and Bespoke Consultancy to all those working in the arts and entertainment industry. The mental health practitioners working for Applause for Thought are all aware of the performing arts industry so you don't need to spend your time explaining to them what exactly it is you do. They know and understand the pressures you're under in your role.  The biggest industry specific trigger around mental health is burnout. When you're any kind of freelancer the work doesn't stop and when you're not working, you're trying to find the next thing.   Singing teachers can help and support performers through not just focusing on the skill, singing, but more of a focus on confidence and how our students feel. If you take a whole person approach and build confidence that will build them to be able to deal with the industry.    BEST MOMENTS ‘Mental health wasn't spoken about the way it is now'  ‘Education = Prevention'  ‘Mental health is so tricky because it seems invisible'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training  Guest Website: www.applauseforthought.com Social Media: Instagram: @applauseforthought Twitter: @ApplauseThought   ABOUT THE GUEST Raffaella Covino is a creative who has spent the last decade working as a Dance Captain/Associate and Swing across the West End, UK and Internationally. She took a year long hiatus from the industry in 2018 as she navigated mental illness, but born out of that experience was the now triple award-winning community interest company Applause for thought.  Since launching in February 2019 with the ethos and mantra 'education equals prevention' at the heart, AFT facilitates lower cost mental health; support, talks and workshops, accredited training and bespoke consultancy to the arts and entertainment industry.   ABOUT THE PODCAST BAST Training is here to help singers gain the knowledge, skills and understanding required to be a great singing teacher. Debunking a tonne of speculations and hypotheses on men's mental health, this conversation cuts to the bone with everyday ways to check in on ourselves and our mates. Amidst loads of ridiculous teenage references and hilarious accounts of growing up anxious, there is a trigger warning. Hunter and Zac touch on suicide, depression and anxiety to bring new personal truths to these heavy topics. Dr Zac says men aren't dying because they don't open up, rather, we have a system that shuts them down. Dr Zac is currently Director of Mental Health Training at Movember and Senior Research Fellow with Orygen at the University of Melbourne. No ivory towers. No judgement. Just honest acknowledgement that we are all on a daily, dynamic journey when it comes to our mental health. Thanks for walking it with us! And I wholeheartedly agree, but I don't want to be handing them the shit show that we are existing in at the moment.” “I will climb down the ladder with you, but I won't go all the way to the bottom and I will hold my arm out and I will pull you back up. You know, and I think too many guys go all the way down and then you're fucking sinking in the mud.
