Today, I chat with Gianclaudio Malgieri, an expert in privacy, data protection, AI regulation, EU law, and human rights. Gianclaudio is an Associate Professor of Law at Leiden University, the Co-director of the Brussels Privacy Hub, Associate Editor of the Computer Law & Security Review, and co-author of the paper "The Unfair Side of Privacy Enhancing Technologies: Addressing the Trade-offs Between PETs and Fairness". In our conversation, we explore this paper and why privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) are essential but not enough on their own to address digital policy challenges.Gianclaudio explains why PETs alone are insufficient solutions for data protection and discusses the obstacles to achieving fairness in data processing – including bias, discrimination, social injustice, and market power imbalances. We discuss data alteration techniques such as anonymization, pseudonymization, synthetic data, and differential privacy in relation to GDPR compliance. Plus, Gianclaudio highlights the issues of representation for minorities in differential privacy and stresses the importance of involving these groups in identifying bias and assessing AI technologies. We also touch on the need for ongoing research on PETs to address these challenges and share our perspectives on the future of this research. Topics Covered: What inspired Gianclaudio to research fairness and PETsHow PETs are about power and controlThe legal / GDPR and computer science perspectives on 'fairness'How fairness relates to discrimination, social injustices, and market power imbalances How data obfuscation techniques relate to AI / ML How well the use of anonymization, pseudonymization, and synthetic data techniques address data protection challenges under the GDPRHow the use of differential privacy techniques may led to unfairness Whether the use of encrypted data processing tools and federated and distributed analytics achieve fairness 3 main PET shortcomings and how to overcome them: 1) bias discovery; 2) harms to people belonging to protected groups and individuals autonomy; and 3) market imbalances.Areas that warrant more research and investigation Resources Mentioned:Read: "The Unfair Side of Privacy Enhancing Technologies: Addressing the Trade-offs Between PETs and Fairness"Guest Info: Connect with Gianclaudio on LinkedInLearn more about Brussles Privacy HubSend us a Text Message.Privado.aiPrivacy assurance at the speed of product development. Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, former director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, recently intimated to UFO debunker, "reporter," and Pentagon shill Steven Greenstreet, that AARO plans to release a historical records report related to UFO cases "dating back to the 1940s, including Roswell," by March 7. Kirkpatrick last month commented that "metallic spy balloons" were responsible for the UFO crash in Roswell incident. Also, a recent article in the Liberation Times expressed concerns that there's a deliberate effort under way to delay publication of an upcoming op-ed from whistleblower David Grusch. The article speculated that the Defense Office of Prepublication and Security Review - which has to approve Grusch's op-ed before it can be published - has not yet cleared it, although it received it two months ago. Unnamed sources, according to the article, indicated that "DOPSR is being manipulated to facilitate Dr. Kirkpatrick's targeting of whistleblowers, while these whistleblowers remain silenced." Finally, a recent report on a flying saucer filmed via drone by Ukraine military personnel is discussed. Links/Sources: Steven Greenstreet

A National Audit Office (NAO) report on ‘The Equipment Plan 2023 - 2033' in the UK makes for grim reading, revealing a massive so-called ‘black hole' in the Defence budget, which means there is apparently no money for key projects, including future warships. In part two of the discussion, host Iain Ballantyne and guests Gary Blackburn and James Bosbotinis weigh up the shortfall in funding. They also ponder what the Labour Government-in-waiting might do to fill in the ‘black hole' if it succeeds in coming to power in 2024. Are we going to see the Navy-led Indo-Pacific ‘tilt' by the UK axed and would that be a wise move in our interconnected world? Surely there cannot be another British retreat from East of Suez? With so many threats looming globally, might a UK government be foolish enough to follow the example of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review and further hollow out the Armed Forces to save money with big item cuts? Aside from contemplating the above issues, the discussion addresses whether or not the long-feared New Cold War is here, with the Western liberal democracies confronted by a global existential threat from authoritarian states (not least Russia and Iran). • For more on Warships IFR magazine http://bit.ly/wifrmag Follow it on Twitter @WarshipsIFR and on Facebook @WarshipsIFR The topics discussed during our podcast episode are often also looked at in the magazine itself. In part two of a discussion by Mark Grove and Dr Gary Blackburn with host Iain Ballantyne, the tasty and varied menu includes naval aspects of the Ukraine War and whether or not a new Battle of the Atlantic is shaping up as Russia seeks to win its so-called ‘special military operation' in Ukraine it has sought to establish stronger links with China, so this begs the question, which Iain puts out there: what does Moscow have to offer Beijing? Does the answer possibly lie in naval technology? After also touching on Russia reinforcing its submarine forces in the Pacific, the chat turns to the Ukraine War itself. Among the topics touched on are Moscow effort's to impose a distant blockade in the Black Sea and the use of drones, plus implications for the Royal Navy as it struggles to achieve critical mass in aerial capabilities. The discussion turns to the new contest in the Atlantic between Russia and the West. Bearing in mind this is the 80 th anniversary year of the Allies gaining a decisive upper hand in the WW2 struggle for that vast and strategically vital ocean, does naval history offer anything relevant to where we are now? Would convoys of merchant vessels need to make a comeback if the 21 st Century Atlantic contest turns hot? And, as a worthwhile digression, what about the importance of safeguarding seabed infrastructure - especially in the wake of the Nord Stream sabotage attack - and how to avoid dangerous escalation? The expert analysis and commentary of Mark and Gary on all the above subjects is well worth a listen. Also touched on in this episode is China seeking to exert sea control in oceans off its shores, via land-based ballistic missiles, but why? The conundrum of prioritising UK army or naval expenditure is mentioned, along with the folly of the UK's notorious 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review. Mark Grove is a Senior Lecturer in Strategic Studies specialising in Maritime Strategy, Warfare, and Security at the University of Lincoln's Maritime Studies Centre at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, where he has taught for 24 years, originally working directly for the Ministry of Defence. Mark has written on amphibious warfare, the naval history of the Second World War, and the Falklands. Over the last decade or more has spent most of his research time examining the threats posed by the Russian and Chinese navies, on which he has provided briefings for several UK and NATO Headquarters and Government Departments. Why is the Biden Administration allowing so much investment in China? At a time when Taiwan is considered to be in such a challenging position? According to the U.S. China Economic and Security Review, we need serious restrictions on U.S. investment in China. The trade imbalances are back at levels not seen since before the 2018 Trump tariffs and the U.S. dollars flowing to China is on the rise. Sometimes, our government needs to intervene in the name of U.S. national security. China's certainly protecting itself and its own economy, why aren't we? Happy Friday! On Nov. 11, FrontPage published my latest article, The Left's Immigration Laws: The Ultimate Con Game: Undermining public safety, public health, national security and the jobs and wages of American workers. I also do twice-weekly podcasts for Team DML. Yesterday my podcast focused on the threats that China poses to America and the free world and referenced an article published by Hillsdale College last month Why and How the U.S. Should Stop Financing China’s Bad Actors that was based on an eye-opening speech given by Roger W. Robinson, Jr., who served as senior director of international economic affairs on President Reagan’s National Security Council and served as chairman of the Congressional U.S.-China Economic and Security Review. Roger Bolton airs audience views on BBC radio output, including a controversy in local radio, new funding for the World Service, and the fresh comedy duo The Pin. Earlier this month, presenter Iain Lee hosted a controversial discussion about Christianity and LGBT rights on his BBC Three Counties radio breakfast show. The heated interviews divided listeners and Iain Lee has now left the station. Campaigns across social media, led by fans and LGBT rights groups, have since demanded Iain Lee's reinstatement, but to what extent should a BBC presenter be allowed to take sides in a debate? The Government has announced that it will provide the BBC World Service with an additional £85 million a year, as part of the National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security Review. In the review, the World Service is cited as a way to expand UK 'soft power' and will be required to spend the money expanding services in key global regions. While this additional funding is welcomed by many World Service listeners, others question whether the BBC is becoming an arm of British foreign policy. After ten years on air, Radio 4's Lives in a Landscape is coming to an end. Roger Bolton speaks to the Presenter Alan Dein to look back a decade of remarkable stories told by seemingly everyday people. And BBC Radio has been home to a long line of comedy double acts, from Morecambe and Wise to Mitchell and Webb. Following in that tradition is a new comedy duo called The Pin. Their debut Radio 4 series has just drawn to a close and was enjoyed by many listeners. Roger Bolton speaks to The Pin, aka Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen, to talk double acts and radio influences. Producer: Katherine Godfrey A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
