The government has promised to restore the target to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. The zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate also requires that 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain will have to be zero emission by 2030. However, car makers have expressed concerns about their ability to hit these targets without further support, and the sale of electric vehicles (EVs) is lagging behind the government target. So what are the barriers to EV uptake? Charging infrastructure is one reason consumers hesitate to make the switch, with a lack of on-street charging, bottlenecks with motorway charging, as well as concerns about price differential and different rates of VAT for on- and off-street parking. More also needs to be done to ensure the electricity network can cope with demand, and that charge points can be easily and cheaply connected to the grid. So what could be done to accelerate the rollout of EV charging infrastructure? How does the new government plan to address these challenges? And where in the country are these problems most acute? To discuss these questions and more, our panel included: Lilian Greenwood MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Future of Roads) Rosa Hodgkin, Researcher at the Institute for Government Ian Howells, Executive Vice President of Honda Motor Europe Bharat Pathania, Head of New Technologies at Midlands Connect This event was chaired by Nehal Davison, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.

The 26 million: how to care for people living with long-term health conditions

How should we think of the 26 million people in the UK living with a long-term health condition? Under the current system, only a handful of long-term conditions are prioritised. This leads to a huge strain on NHS resources and capacity later down the road, as long-term health conditions comprise 50 per cent of all GP appointments and 70 per cent hospital bed days. What's more, 2.5 million working-age adults are out of the labour market because of long-term sickness. How do we better make the NHS – and politicians – accountable to these patients? With treatment and care of patients with long term conditions estimated to take up around £7 in every £10 of total health and social care expenditure, we urgently need fresh thinking to grasp the scale and scope of this challenge.  Isabel Hardman hosts this special episode of Spectator Briefings with a panel of expert guests: Guy Opperman MP, Minister for Employment Lord Nick Markham, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for the Lords) - DHSC Richard Sloggett, Founder – Future Health Research Georgina Carr, Chief Executive – Neurological Alliance Todd Manning, VP and General Manager – Abbvie UK Developed in association with and funded by AbbVie.

The United Kingdom (UK) has had to balance its net-zero ambitions with energy security after suffering from a price shock in 2021 that increased the cost of energy and forced them to stop importing Russian natural gas. This week, Lord Martin Callanan, the UK's Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance) at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, joins the podcast. His responsibilities include CCUS, hydrogen, green finance, energy efficiency, and emissions trading. Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked Lord Callanan: How do you respond to those that oppose the licensing of new North Sea oil and gas developments? Has the UK changed its policies or subsidies to compete with the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)?  How can a carbon-market approach with price volatility compete against the certainty of the IRA-style, subsidy-based policy? Russell Burrell, a Youth Fusion associate, recently sat down with Minister Phil Twyford, from New Zealand, and Alyn Ware of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament. Minister Twyford is currently New Zealand's Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control and State Minister for Trade and Export, and Alyn is PNND's Global Coordinator. In our chat with Minister Twyford and Alyn, we covered topics from their backgrounds to current state of international affairs and the disarmament movement. The most intriguing part of our chat, however, was the portion on Outer Space. In the context of today's global challenges, we discussed the difficulties and challenges outlined in the disarmament handbook, Assuring Our Common Future, and more, but the bulk of our discussion rested on New Zealand's own policies related to outer space; New Zealand has two primary policies, which Minister Twyford helped push forward: the 2017 Outer Space and High-altitude Activities Act and the 2019 Space Launch Guidelines, both of which aim to be in line with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. This podcast has been in support of the upcoming webinar “Ensuring that outer space remains a common good”, which takes place on September 29th, 2022. There will be two sessions: one at 7am CET for participants from the Indo-Pacific and Middle-East Regions, and one at 1pm CET for participants from Europe, Africa, and the Americas. This webinar is in support of the disarmament handbook “Assuring Our Common Future”, which can be found at disarmamenthandbook.org. On July 21st, Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as Sri Lanka's new president after the crisis-laden country's parliament elected him to finish up ousted Gotabaya Rajapaksa's term. A'ndre and Ryan look back at The Burn Bag's August 2021 interview with President Wickremesinghe, when he was the lone MP representing his political party, a year after his prior tenure as Prime Minister had ended. We profile the controversial new President, discussing the wily politician's lingering presence on Sri Lanka's political stage and a career filled with many highs and lows, highlighting attention to how Wickremesinghe managed to clinch the presidency despite being significantly unpopular with the Sri Lankan public and having no popular mandate. The hosts then throw the program to Wickremesinghe's August 2021 interview, which took place during Sri Lanka's COVID lockdown last year. We believe that reflecting on the interview from nearly a year ago is invaluable in assessing how Sri Lanka's new president evaluates Sri Lanka's own political history. Key points that we recommend our audience pay attention to include Wickremesinghe's view on Sri Lanka's debt crisis, U.S.-China relations, and Sri Lanka's past civil conflict. Additionally, Wickremesinghe discusses the relationship between Sri Lanka's president and prime minister -- a relationship he often found himself at the losing end of in the past. Given Wickremesinghe's new executive powers and the protest movement's calls for significant political reform, it will be interesting for watchers to observe if Wickremesinghe's positioning changes. You can listen to our miniseries, Sri Lanka: Debt, Development, and Democracy here:Episode 1: Journalist Uditha Jayasinghe on the State of Sri Lanka's Political and Economic LandscapeEpisode 2: Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on U.S.-China, Domestic Governance, and Political TurmoilEpisode 3: Tamil National Alliance MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam on Post-War Reconciliation and Political EnfranchisementEpisode 4: State Minister of Regional Cooperation Tharaka Balasuriya on Economic Diplomacy, U.S.-China, and the UNHRCEpisode 5: Trade Expert Subhashini Abeysinghe on Sri Lanka's Debt Crisis and Economic Ties with China and the United StatesEpisode 6: (then)-U.S. Ambassador Alaina B. In a big development in Karnataka politics, State Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj KS Eshwarappa announced his resignation from office on Thursday, 14 April, after allegations of corruption and his alleged role in the suicide of a contractor surfaced. The news of Eshwarappa's resignation is huge given that it was not expected in the days after the allegations surfaced. Eshwarappa too had been defiant on the issue and even previously stated to media that there is “no question” of him resigning as a minister. His resignation comes on the heels of the death of Santosh Patil, a contractor involved in various government projects. Patil was found dead in a hotel in Udupi on 12 April. In the final message that he purportedly sent to his friends, he named Eshwarappa as "solely responsible" for his death. Pertinently, Patil had also alleged that Eshwarappa harassed him for a bribe to clear the bills regarding some construction work, reportedly asking for a 40 percent bribe of the total cost of the project, which reportedly amounted to a whopping Rs 4 crore. The Udupi police had also registered an FIR against Eshwarappa and two of his aides under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with abetment to suicide. Although the minister has denied the charges, his surprise resignation throws a new twist in the entire case, with the question being: was he pushed to resign from office? We discuss the resignations and the case with The Quint's South Bureau Chief Nikhila Henry and Naheed Ataulla, a senior journalist based in Bengaluru. In the fourth installment of our miniseries "Sri Lanka: Debt, Development, and Democracy?", we interview incumbent State Minister of Regional Cooperation Tharaka Balasuriya to get the Government's take on economic diplomacy, U.S.-China, and the response to the United Nations Human Rights Council initiatives against Sri Lanka. Mr. Balasuriya, whose role is new and similar to that of a Deputy Foreign Minister with a regional focus, gives his take on the state of Sri Lankan foreign policy under the Rajapaksa Government, first discussing Sri Lanka's regional relations, highlighting ties with India. The State Minister disputes the notion that the Rajapaksa Government is 'pro-China', blames the previous government for the 99-year lease on the Hambantota Port, but does assert that China has been helpful to Sri Lanka's economic priorities. Balasuriya outlines why the Sri Lankan Government rejected the U.S. Millennium Challenge Compact (a proposed deal which was the subject of a visit to Sri Lanka by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo a week before the 2020 Presidential Election), while asserting that U.S.-Sri Lankan relations are good, and asserting that Sri Lanka wants to maintain geopolitical neutrality. In our report Taking back control of trade policy, the Institute argued that the government needed a clear trade strategy. So far, the government's main goal appears to be to strike as many deals as it can. But recent disagreements in cabinet over whether to open UK markets to Australian agricultural produce, and whether UK farmers will be able to compete, suggest that the government is still struggling to make the necessary trade-offs. This panel examined whether the UK has a trade policy, and if so, what it hopes to achieve. To discuss these issues, we were joined by:Martin Bell, Deputy Director of Trade at the Scotch Whisky AssociationAnna Isaac, Incoming Economics Editor at The IndependentGraham Stuart MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Exports) at the Department for International TradeEmily Thornberry MP, Shadow International Trade SecretaryNick von Westenholz, Director of Trade and Business Strategy at the National Farmers UnionThe event was chaired by James Kane, Associate at the Institute for Government.#IfGtrade See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Inspired by his Grandmother’s gospel records, a four- year-old Patrick climbed atop a piano bench and began to play by ear. Thus began his lifetime love affair with gospel music, a passion which has consumed and driven him…   Patrick attended Norfolk State University and received the Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal music and in 2016 he completed his Masters Degree at Liberty University. While attending NSU, he was appointed director of the Voices of Inspiration Gospel Choir and won many awards and choral competitions with them. For 10 years, Patrick has blessed the NSU Voices of Inspirations with his desire to "Sing unto the Lord a New Song." Together they praised God almighty, offering songs of praise that warm the souls of those proclaiming the spirit of the Lord.   Licensed to preach in 2002, Patrick has served as the Worship Pastor to one of the top-tiered churches within Hampton Roads Region. Revered by many as a true gospel choirmaster, he has often been noted for his tremendous ability to write, arrange and produce music that is stirring and always appropriate for worship. He is best celebrated for his flamboyant, aggressive, high energy, yet technical style of choir directing and has been deemed as the "Prince of Choirs". He has served as a background vocalist and choir director for many plays, gospel artists, recordings and workshops. He currently serves under his mentor Minister Ricky Dillard as assistant director in his, Grammy nominated, Stellar Award winning choir New Generation Chorale, Chicago, Illinois.   Patrick is also the founder and conductor of his national recording choir D’vyne Worship; a 50+ voice choral aggregate which sings not only gospel and contemporary songs, but anthems as well. Under his leadership, this choir has charted on Billboard Music's Top 10 and received national recognition from the voting academy of The Stellar Awards.    He serves as the VA 2nd Jurisdiction's State Minister of Music COGIC, VA 2nd Jurisdiction's AIM Vice-Chairman, Chorum of Directors for the International Music Department COGIC, Department Cantor for the International Department of Evangelism COGIC, Music Coordinator for International Mens Department COGIC, and holds a seat on the Contemporary Adult Division Board of GMWA. Patrick frequently travels the country, as he is called upon to serve as guest conductor, vocalist, clinician, lecturer and evangelist. In 2015 Elder Riddick launched a life empowering bible study entitled "Moments of Deliverance" which is geared to equip and develop all whom desire to grow in their Christian Faith.

Read the full story with photos at: https://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/globalnews/2014/0303_01.html   Otsuka Pharmaceutical is the first pharmaceutical company to be awarded the “Diversity Management Selection 100”, for successfully creating a more female-friendly workplace. This award is given by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry to companies that have used diversity management to increase their value, as a way of increasing recognition and awareness of efforts to promote diversity and increasing the number of companies who promote diversity. The ministry plans to give this award to approximately 100 companies in total over a 3-year period, which started in 2012. In 2012, 43 companies received the award and 2013, 46 received it. In the opening speech of the State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ms. Midori Matsushima said, “It is Otsuka’s hope that the promotion of diversity by various means will contribute not only to the company’s growth, but to the growth of the entire Japanese economy. Otsuka would like to see the best practices of the companies receiving this award spur the growth and expansion of Japanese industry.” Ms. Matsushima pointed out that, “Different companies are employing various means to achieve results. Otsuka Pharmaceuticals’ SoyCarat, which is prominently displayed in many stores, was developed by a female researcher. The Japanese name for this snack, “SoyKara,” comes from the rattling sound of the snack “kara kara”, when the soybean pods are shaken.” Making the product enjoyable to all five senses and a healthy one too, since it is baked and not fried. Women account for 11.4% of Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s executives, compared to industry average of 1.2%*1. More than 20% of Otsuka’s MRs are female, compared to an average of 10% at other companies.*2 The number of female Otsuka employees who continue to work after giving birth is 11 times higher than what it was 6 years ago in 2007 when Otsuka Women’s Workshops were first held. Otsuka has also implemented flexible work arrangements to allow for child care and has made it its goal to open more company day care centers. Mothers-to-be get full pay before and after birth (during maternity leave), including full bonus pay even though the law mandates two-thirds pay and can get up to 1.5 years of maternity/child care leave. To help Otsuka’s employees who are parents with young children, they can opt for shortened work days, which are available to those with children not yet in first grade. Also flexible work hours, from confirmation of the pregnancy until the child enters 8th grade is available. Since the 1980s, when the concept of “diversity” was not yet widely recognized, Otsuka Pharmaceutical has believed that the creation of innovative products and ideas requires utilizing the talents of a diverse group of individuals. The Otsuka senior management has been promoting diversity aggressively since then. Starting in the 1990s, Otsuka made a more female-friendly workplace a specific goal, with initiatives that included organizing “Women’s Forums.” There’s also Otsuka Women’s Workshops for sharing information about child care with female MRs who are married, pregnant, or have given birth. These workshops have been held since 2007. Male employees are not left out. There are “Ikumen” seminars (“Ikumen” - a Japanese term that loosely means “involved dad”) aimed primarily at male employees to promote a healthy work—life balance.
