“And I parked my car, I jumped out of the car, and this happy dog is springing around, and I laid down on the sidewalk because I know that they want submissive approaches. So I sat down and then I laid down, and then kind of did stuff so he'd come over and sniff me, and then I lightly grabbed the pup named Jazz, which was funny, and right as I was, like, laying on the sidewalk sprawled out, sprawled out like I'd just been hit in the head with a bat, this cop drives by. And he looks out and he sees me and he sees this dog, and he just keeps driving by. He didn't even stop, didn't say nothing, was like ‘not today, mm mm, not dealing with that weirdness.'” -- Van Gunter This week's the second half of my interview with voice artist, DJ, and sound engineer Van Gunter as we talk about some of Van's spookier experiences with sound, the value of social media when it comes to building a brand, and why he always keeps emergency dog treats and leashes in his car.As always, if you have questions for my guests, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. And if you have questions for me, visit www.audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available. And if you're getting some value from listening, feel free to spread that around and share it with a friend, along with leaving an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. You can leave one either in written or in voice format from the podcast's main page. I would so appreciate that. Keeping Everything MovingThe second half of our interview starts with Van's account of some of the spooky audio phenomena that the acoustics of his studio, a converted church, can create. “It creates a lot of silence and weird pockets of sounds. There's so many times that I thought there were people here in the building, and it's totally empty.” Van offers his voiceover advice as a sound engineer and how he works to ease anxieties and helps sessions go more smoothly. “It's the respect and the simplicity of keeping communication,” he says, “but that's also teamwork... it's just keeping everything moving and flowing.” A Puppy Studio“I am a firm believer,” Van says, “in the power of the puppies.” We talk about how he and his wife work with rescue dogs and some of his most memorable adventures when it comes to helping animals, and he shares their volunteer work has taught him about “speaking canine,” a skill that's just as useful with humans as it is with dogs. "I love to speak canine because it does sweet things and we're a puppy studio," he explains. "Things melt away, anxiety melts, and people become whole again." Teamwork With a VengeanceAs our interview comes to a close, Van tells us about his latest projects, including what he calls a dangerously catchy new jingle. “We need to remember this time right now,” he playfully warns us, “because in a few weeks when this hits the air, you're going to want to hit me with a bat.” We also talk about his work at the Sidewalk Film Festival, which he calls a "teamwork with a vengeance experience.” Van credits his wife and their sixteen years of marriage for keeping him sane and talks about the important role social media plays in this day and age when it comes to branding. “I think we all need to get a little bit more active, if you want to, on social media. I certainly need to.” Episode SummaryHow building acoustics can create unsettling audio effects and illusionsVan's advice as an audio engineer when it comes to voiceoverHow “speaking canine” can be a...

Call it alchemy or magic or voodoo, it's a powerful thing when sound design meets amazing images to create kickass animation. As Senior Director / Animator at Big Communications, it's Ali Clark's job to create and execute killer animation for her clients. Ali came by for a visit with Lane McGiboney, Van Gunter and Kelley Buttrick to share some secrets about how she creates her magic. Ali has executive produced documentaries, directed music videos and has worked with sound, video and animation for more than 10 years. She shares how she learned to harness the power of audio in the creative process. In a recent project for the Sidewalk Film Festival Ali worked with the Boutwell Studios team to create a Sponsor Trailer starting with audio and building the images around the sound. Audio in animation projects is important as well because animation is so contingent on timing. Sometimes a piece of music influences the timing of the animation based on the BPM or rhythms and whatever might already currently be embedded to the music. You're animating to what already exists because it feels right. You can also create a soundscape and then animate to that and rather than creating timings and pacing around what's already existent in a piece of music. Sound and music is incredibly powerful. It has the ability to take over our emotions and lead us in a direction. It paints a picture for you; it fills in the gaps. Sound design makes the visuals feel alive and real. You don't realize how amazing sound is until someone puts the right sound to the thing that you're working on. It tells a story all on its own. It gives you a bigger picture of the world and it fills in the gaps. Whether it's in advertising, creative projects, documentaries and animation, we're telling stories, communicating, emotions and feelings. Ali and the Boutwell team are huge supporters of Birmingham's Sidewalk Film Festival. It brings diverse people from the community together every year for a weekend celebrating independent film and creativity. They’ve made several feature length documentaries over the years which have played at Birmingham, Alabama’s Sidewalk Film Festival, and Park City, Utah's Slam Dance. When I asked the founders of the Atlanta Actors Collective what they hoped the future of their organization would be, Kevon Pryce didn’t hesitate, “I want to take over the world. I want us to be THE Actors Collective.” It is clear throughout our conversation that it isn’t for any kind of self-aggrandizement purposes that he says this. He, along with Sarah Toran and Rashal James, started the AAC to create a community for actors and creatives based in the Atlanta market. Their goal was, and still is, to strengthen the sense of community and to provide the resources and help that they didn’t have when they moved to Atlanta. It is clear when talking to these young people, they believe that in helping each other we all succeed. As they say, “There’s power in collaboration. There’s power in community.” Sarah Toran is a model, actor and voiceover artist from Chicago, IL; where she trained at Second City. She moved to Atlanta to continue to pursue her acting career in a warmer climate. She has met so many other talented creatives in the tv & film industry through classes, intensives, workshops, events and of course on-set. She has been in numerous short films and television shows and is excited about the new projects she is working on. Kevon Pryce is a writer and filmmaker based in Atlanta, Georgia. He writes film news, short stories, poems, and screenplays. His films have screened at festivals across the southeast such as Atlanta Film Festival, Rome International Film Festival, and Sidewalk Film Festival. Rashal James is a trained Actor/Voice Actor from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Originally starting out in the music industry as a rapper he then decided to pursue a career in film. He trained with a few instructors and soon found like-minded individuals who shared his enthusiasm for acting and helping other actors find resources to hone their skills. Catch Rashal’s work on Disney +, The CW, and Lifetime Movie Network. Together they co-founded the Atlanta Actors Collective. A group focused on building relationships between tv & film industry creatives and is an informational resource for the acting community in Atlanta. George Chen spoke with directors Puloma Basu and Rob Hatch-Miller about their 2019 film, Other Music.Other Music was a record store in New York for twenty years and a played a central role in the life of the city’s music scene. The store closed in 2016 and this documentary captures the last month and a half of the store’s activity, with former employees, fans, and musicians all showing up to pay their respects. There are interviews and guest appearances from Martin Gore of Depeche Mode, Jason Schwartzmann, Regina Spektor, William Basinski, Tunde Adebimpe, Cornelius, and Benicio Del Toro. More than the famous talking heads, this feels like a vital reminder of the before-times, a celebration of community. The film's release plans had to be altered with the COVID19 quarantine, so instead Other Music has a special online release for a limited time starting April 17th. A "Virtual Cinema release" through Factory25, part of the profitsare being channeled to record stores, book stores, movie theaters, and other retailers shuttered due the the pandemic. Grace Kim is a Korean-American filmmaker and writer who uses absurdist and surrealist premises in film as a vehicle for sowing empathy. Dropping audiences into the otherworldly circumstances of her characters, she seeks to reflect to viewers their own humanity. If one is able to resonate with the loneliness of say, a man desperate for love after hearing a woman's voice on the other side of a banana phone, could human empathy not transcend arbitrary boundaries of race, gender, class, and beyond? Currently, Grace is in development for an animated TV series about climate change, The Grand Tammy, which was a second rounder for the Sundance Episodic Lab. She is a Viacom Viewfinder Program fellow and recently shadowed director/executive producer Dime Davis on the Paramount TV series Boomerang, executive produced by Lena Waithe and Halle Berry. In addition to television, Grace is a Picture Farm Directing Program fellow for female commercial directors. Grace's award-winning short films have screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Tall Grass Film Festival, and Sidewalk Film Festival amongst others. Her debut short Loveseat was a finalist for the Horizon Award at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and the Loveseat script was a quarterfinalist for the Screen Craft Short Film Fund. The script for her latest project Fissura was a finalist for the Cascadia International Women's Film Festival Script Studio as well as one of the top 100 submissions for the Shift Creative Fund. Grace was also a part of Ghetto Film School's EMERGE8 semi-finalists for their inaugural emerging directors program. Her work has been supported by the NYC Women's Fund funded by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment and NYFA. Her upcoming projects include Heart Tick Kaboom, a short film commissioned by Atlanta Film Society for the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport which will screen on the 500 screens throughout the airport starting in April 2020 and a narrative dance film, Fissura, which is slated to shoot in September 2020 and is supported in part by the Brooklyn Arts Council. Grace currently splits her time between the brownstones of Brooklyn and the sunny shores of Los Angeles. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coronachronicles/support

Born to a Nigerian father and Ivorian mother in Guymon, Oklahoma, Gladys Edeh has always been a lover of the arts right from the age of 13. Her love affair for film blossomed after watching the 1980’s movie classic, "The God's Must be Crazy" with her dad. Her dream was to attend film school and begin her life as a filmmaker, but her father had other plans and wanted her to pursue a degree that would provide better job prospects. She moved from Kano State, Nigeria to Atlanta, GA in 1995 and attained a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Film Studies at Kennesaw State University. Upon graduation, even though she worked in IT full time, she became an active member of the film community in the Atlanta area and participated in every film or video project she could find and performed in several roles such as a boom operator, background actor, production coordinator., production manager, etc. But in 2008, she formed KokoAtDawn Productions and produced her very first short film, ‘But Mamah’ which was screened at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema in Atlanta, GA during the 48 Hour Film Project that year. In 2009, the film got selected to be part of the ION Film Festival which was hosted in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. In subsequent years, she went on to produce fictional short films such as A Day in A Life, Go Fish, Lost Memory and Solemates. In 2012, she began to focus more on the documentary style of filmmaking which led to her directing, producing, filming and editing short form content for the web. This led to opportunities to capture celebrities such as Afrobeats singer and songwriter Lagbaja, AfroJazz/Folk Soul artist, Tosinger, British-Nigerian actor Wale Ojo, and Deyemi Okanlawon, a Nollywood Actor, and a host of other artists. Her latest short film, Mr. Gele: The Man.The Story. The Craft gave her access to profile the talented African headgear mastermind, Mr. Hakeem Oluwasegun Olaleye, also referred to as Segun Gele. “Mr. Gele” which is currently in the film festival circuit has been an official selection in the Sidewalk Film Festival, Cleveland Film Festival, African World Film Festival, CineOdyssey Film Festival, African New York Film Festival and the BronzeLens Film Festival where it received a nomination for Best Short in the Short Documentary category. It is also now airing on the Africa's first Global Black Entertainment & Lifestyle network, EbonyLife TV to over 49 countries in Africa. As a filmmaker with an African heritage, one of her goals is to produce documentaries that showcase the multifaceted lifestyles and untold stories of Africans living in the diaspora. Her films are meant to capture, celebrate and share these stories that normally do not get the light of day on the global stage. She is currently working on creating a 13-episode documentary TV series, a fictional short film and a feature documentary. Gladys Edeh has been a resident of Atlanta, Georgia for over 20 years and currently lives with her husband and two kids.

Jon got a chance to experience the Sidewalk Film Festival this past weekend. He talks about his experience there and the guys also touch on some of the more tragic events of this past weekend and talk about how much they wish they had a silky, smooth radio voice. This is unscripted, real conversation. This is what happens off the air. This is Off the Record. 0:48 - Jon talks about the pros and cons of his first Sidewalk Film Festival. (the picture from today's podcast is from the documentary "Wrestle") 4:12 - Tim talks about wanting to attend South by Southwest and Jon is skeptical of some of the screenings there. 5:19 - Jon and Tim discuss the shooting in Jacksonville at a Madden 19 tournament and how ignorant people are that blame video games for the world's problems. 10:05 - Jon talks about the start of the high school football season and how cool it is that Alabama was prominently featured on ESPN. 13:47 - Jon and Tim talk about the work that goes in to making JoxPreps happen each day and how it's used as a way to make high school football more visible to the casual sports fan. 16:18 - Tim doesn't see how Jon keeps things kept up with JoxPreps. Jon just says he does what he loves with high school sports. 17:55 - Our "AJ Question of the Day": **Most people can't stand to hear their own voice. Have you ever had a moment where you heard yourself and thought 'Oh my word, that's my voice?'** 24:31 - Jon talks about how the first weekend of college football is actually much more relaxing than the weekends before football. Shasha and I talk about her new film Take Light, the power crisis in Nigeria, poverty, corruption, Illegal electricians, suffering and smiling, hope and the legacy of colonialism. Watch the Trailer here. Synopsis Over 50 per cent of Nigeria's nearly 200 million citizens don't have access to electricity. For Africa's largest energy producer and most populous nation, that number is shocking. Those dependent on the unreliable grid are limited to a few hours of power a day at best. Taking matters into their own hands, many households illegally and dangerously wire their homes by tampering with transformers. While a bungling bureaucracy attempts to privatize the electrical system, an electrician risks his life on power poles, trying to provide for his daughter's education. His colleague in customer service has the more difficult task of going door to door collecting fees from disgruntled customers. The problems are complex and systemic, but director Shasha Nakhai delicately balances the big picture of a country trying to advance its development with the compelling stories of blue-collar workers attempting to make better lives for their families. Biography Shasha Nakhai is a filmmaker based out of Toronto with Compy Films and Storyline Entertainment. Her award-winning films have screened at festivals and aired on TV worldwide, been released on iTunes, gone viral and been awarded Vimeo Staff Pick and Short of the Week. Her last film with partner Rich Williamson, Frame 394, was shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short and was part of the CBC’s new Digital Doc Shorts initiative. It had its world premiere at the 2016 Hot Docs Film Festival, and went on to win Best Canadian Short at NorthwestFest, Best Documentary Short at the Rhode Island Int’l Film Festival, Best Documentary Short at the Sidewalk Film Festival, the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short at the New Orleans Film Festival, and Best Documentary at the Charleston Film Festival. It was named one of TIFF’s Top 10 Films of 2016, and was nominated for 2 Canadian Screen Awards. Shasha was 1 of 8 emerging producers selected for the DOC Institute’s Breakthrough Program in 2015, and was awarded Telefilm Canada’s Pay It Forward Prize as part of the Hot Docs Film Festival’s Don Haig Award. Take Light is her first feature documentary. She also has a deep love for interactive storytelling, working as a brand ambassador for PlayStation for 8 years, and having been selected as the inaugural recipient of WIFT's Ubisoft Toronto Producer Mentorship program. She recently collaborated with DimensionGate on her first virtual reality project, Take Light VR. Having graduated from Ryerson University's Broadcast Journalism program, Shasha was born in the Philippines, grew up in Nigeria and came to Canada as an international student in 2003 To learn more about the film visit the site here. ---------- Image Copyright: Storyline and Shasha Nakhai.
