Barris explains how "conspirituality" merges left-leaning new-age beliefs with right-wing political ideologies, often exploiting distrust in institutions like healthcare. They explore how wellness influencers leverage emotional appeal, certainty, and fear-mongering to market alternative health solutions. They also discuss how a strong focus on individualism contributes to the spread of medical misinformation and how social media plays a big role in making these ideas more popular. The conversation also touches on figures like RFK Jr. and the Make America Healthy Again movement, which advocates for food regulation while paradoxically aligning with deregulation-focused politics. Dr Block and Barris went further to discuss how physicians can push back by fostering trust, communicating uncertainty effectively, and engaging in social media discourse. BioDerek Beres is an author, speaker, and media expert based in Portland, Oregon. He has held senior editorial positions at various tech companies and has extensive experience in health, science, and music writing. Beyond the flames, L.A. communities face long-term challenges from gentrification and loss. Join our "Meet the BIPOC Press" panel as local journalists explore the environmental and social impacts of recent fires. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Full Episode Description:  In times of crisis, people need their questions answered, fast. As residents impacted by the recent Los Angeles fires return to their homes, are they receiving enough information about insurance and recovery dollars, or how to protect their health and wellbeing? At the time of this recording, the Pacific Palisades and the Eaton fires are still burning, with toxic air and water putting thousands at risk. On top of the immediate dangers, the loss of community and the threat of developers and gentrification will impact residents for years to come. How are the media reporting on communities dealing with this immeasurable loss and what is the path to recovery for the city? Kadia Tubman, Scripps News Disinformation Correspondent, returns to host our monthly “Meet the BIPOC Press” panel. Joining us from Los Angeles are two journalists to talk about the stories they're covering on the ground. Cerise Castle reports on civil rights, criminal justice and climate. She wrote a groundbreaking exposé of deputy gangs inside the L.A. County Sheriff's Department which we featured last year.  She is exploring the environmental impact the fires have had in communities such as Altadena. Jacqueline García is a Senior Reporter at CALÓ News, focused on immigration, politics and issues affecting the Latino population. She is covering inspiring organizing among day laborers and immigrants. We'll also see an excerpt from Castle's most recent report for Capital & Main. Join us to hear what local BIPOC reporters want outside media to hear, as they respond to the Los Angeles fires.“. . . I am glad to see that there has been a course correction by both local and national media to bring these stories to the forefront, not just talking about high-income earners in the Palisades that have lost million-dollar homes, but talking about the babysitters, the grocery shopkeepers, the renters that were living in apartments that lost everything in the Eaton fire.” - Cerise Castle“. . . [Immigrants are] using this phrase of “el pueblo salva al pueblo,” which is people helping people . . . They said that this is what they're showing, that immigrants are also coming to work and they're showing their efforts and their passion for the community, and they want it to go back to as normal as possible.” - Jacqueline GarcíaGuests:•  Cerise Castle: Journalist, Capital & Main•  Jacqueline García: Senior Reporter, CALÓ News•  Kadia Tubman: Disinformation Correspondent, Scripps News Watch the episode cut airing on PBS stations across the country at our YouTube channelSubscribe to episode notes via PatreonMusic In the Middle:  “Babylon Flamenco” by Gaudi from his album Bass, Dub, Sweat & Tears courtesy of Six Degrees Records.  And additional music included- "Steppin"  and "All The Ways" by Podington Bear. Related Laura Flanders Show Episodes:• The Defund Movement in 2024: Frontline Reporters Separate Myth from Reality: Watch / Audio Podcast•  Colette Pichon Battle on Climate Justice Reparations: Watch / Audio Podcast: Episode &/or Full Conversation•  BIPOC Media Answers the Call: Community Action After Hurricane Helene: Watch / Audio Podcast: Episode &/or Full Conversation   Related Articles and Resources:•  Day Laborers and Volunteers Clean After the Eaton Fire, by Jacqueline Garcia, January 10, 2025, CALÓ News•. Thirty episodes ago, that week's guest discussed with me the notion of this podcast being a one-man weekly endeavor."That's a grind, man," he said. "That's a grind."He was right when he made that comment, and it made me realize that that was a good summation of what the thing had been to that point. And it hasn't changed. It really is a grind to do the outreach and the scheduling, the interviewing and the editing, the prep and the getting the thing to the places it needs to be.There are five essential components that make it all worthwhile:1) meeting new people and hearing their stories2) getting exposed to music I've either never heard of or listened to before3) having guests tell me that they've enjoyed the interview4) experiencing real-life, there's-still-good-in-the-world moments with each interaction5) personal weekly pride in task completion and productivitySo, when I sit in the chair across from a total stranger like DINKC, and I get to learn about him, his family, his culture, his story, his wishes and dreams, and I then get to put it out there for whoever might be interested in sharing that same experience with me, it's worth it. You cannot put a price tag on the opportunity to meet a guy like DINKC. Now, I only sat with him for a couple of hours, and -- who knows -- we may never see one another for the rest of our lives. As DINKC says and lives and is, Death Is Not Knowing Certainty. It doesn't matter, though; my life and my time on this planet are richer for those two hours, and nothing can change that. So, please check out our conversation. DINKC is a son and a brother and an uncle and a father and a husband and an artist. He's a businessman, a dreamer, a friend to many, and an asset to the Kansas City metro area.We talked about his upbringing, his culture, his values, his art studio -- DINKC Studios (600 Ohio Ave. in Strawberry Hill), and we also talked a little bit about some of his favorite records, which were these:Ritchie Valens (1959), Ritchie ValensNotorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die (1994)Barrio Bravo (2001), Celso PiñaYou can give DINKC a follow on Instagram here and here, and you can check out Zoe Strohm's The Pitch article on him here.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples featured in this episode. In observance of International Holocaust Rememberance Day (Jan. 27) we're listening to and discussing Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango, the acclaimed 2023 CD with new music and songs based on poetry and other writing by several women who are, or were, Holocaust survivors in Toronto. These songs recall their terrible and traumatic experiences during the Holocaust, including sexual abuse and torture. Some of the songs were collected and adapted by Dr. Paula David, a social worker, from a group of survivors in the Terrace Holocaust Survivors Group at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto who wrote poetry together to deal with their trauma. Others were adapted from the diary of Molly Applebaum, a Holocaust survivor in Toronto. The music, which is mostly new for this CD, is performed by Toronto's Payadora Tango Ensemble along with several soloists. Our guest to discuss Silent Tears is Vicky Ash-Shifris. She lives in Jerusalem and works as a Yiddish teacher and translator. She translated four of the songs on the CD into Yiddish. From his first professional gig at the age 16 drumming in a country band to performing at with a symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall four years later, the career of Michael Emenau has been as prolific as it has been varied.  After completing a degree in classical percussion from McGIll University Michael played for multiple orchestras. Feeling confined he switched his focus over to jazz vibraphone, both of these experiences provided the skills to perform a wide range of musical genres, to date he has recorded vibraphone on over 200 albums. In the early 90's he moved to Tokyo and immersed himself into the acid jazz and EDM scene becoming a member of the weekly UFO's (United Future organisation) live/DJ all night music battles at Club Yellow. He went on to record on 5 of UFO's albums including the platinum selling “Red Hot and Blue”.In the late 90's Michael relocated to San Francisco where his musical interests cracked wide open—producing 3 albums with the Middle Eastern electronic group LUMIN; was a founding member of The Jazz Mafia which incorporated live looping and sampling into small and large jazz ensembles; fronting an Afro-Cuban dance band while also releasing solo jazzy downtempo music with Six Degrees Records and Hearts of Space. In 2005 Michael and his family relocated to Paris where he started a multi-year project unearthing, re-arranging, recording and performing the music of Henry Purcell with Cirque du Soleil star vocalist Elise Velle. This project spilled over to writing a musical, Divine Intervention--an interpretation of the demi-god Dionysus and his actual cultural influence on Classical composers and authors culminating in a 2-week run at the Nova Scotia Fringe Festival.Michael, his family and his beagle currently reside in Montreal where he is a world-touring member of the Grammy nominated “Les Triplettes de Bellville” Cine-Concerts series. He co-leads the Canadian Folk Music Awards nominated “ensemble of the year 2020” SUSSEX, which interweaves folk, ragtime, and roots music.Since the onset of Covid Michael has gone back to the studio and released 3 albums of Lofi Hip-Hop instrumental.

FOR DECADES, globalization has been a fact of life. And even before Covid-19, it was becoming controversial. Now, with critical supply chains being disrupted by the pandemic, we're having a bit of a rethink. San Francisco is the home of Six Degrees Records, a company that's been dedicated to crossing musical borders since 1996, with the provocative slogan "everything is closer than you think." They live the idea, releasing a wide range of traditional and progressive music from around the planet. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, an Anglo-American ambient journey, on a program called SIX DEGREES OF AMBIENT. Los Angeles-native singer/songwriter, Charlotte Bash, began performing at a young age and has sung at numerous venues internationally with the likes of John Mellencamp, Sara Bareilles, Aaron Carter, Marietta Simpson, Sylvia McNair, and Shahkar Bineshpajooh at The Microsoft Theatre at LA Live. She was classically trained as an opera singer at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, but when she returned to L.A. she wanted to find her own sound that combined her classical training with the pop music she loved.  The sound she found is a unique musical experience that combines fantasy and reality, as demonstrated in her 2013 release of her coming of age EP, Journey to Me. Her newest project, “Princess Game”  was inspired by the electro indie pop scene coming out of Britain and Australia and is a theatrical journey through sonic landscapes that tell a powerful story. Afrolicious has established itself as one of the most legendary weekly parties in San Francisco and of the top live/electronic bands on the west coast. Started as a weekly dance party featuring DJ’s and brothers Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz  (Joe McGuire and brother Oz McGuire) alongside percussionists, MC’s and horn players, it has evolved with original music under the alias Afrolicious and a live band.  They have performed at venues like Red Rocks, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Electric Forest Festival, Snow Globe, Burningman, Sea of Dreams, and alongside such artists as Thievery Corporation, Jimmy Cliff, Fishbone, Rob Garza, Novalima, J.Boogie, and DJ Smash.  Afrolicious remixes and original productions can be found on labels such as ESL Music, Six Degrees Records, Akwaaba Music, Bagpak Music and more.
