Apesar do reconhecimento, Valadon enfrentou muitos desafios.

Kate Molleson explores the spry and subtly surprising music of Germaine Tailleferre Kate Molleson revels in the spry and subtly surprising music of Germaine Tailleferre, with guests Barbara Kelly and Caroline Potter. Germaine Tailleferre first made a splash in the heady atmosphere of 1920s Paris. She was part of a lively, bohemian scene in which poetry and exhibitions went hand in hand with performances of new music. Her career was given a bump start by the eccentric older composer, Eric Satie. He was an influential voice in avant-garde circles, and his support opened a door to wider recognition. Tailleferre became part of a like-minded set of young composers, along with Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Louis Durey and Georges Auric. Their energy and drive created exciting new outlets for performances of their music. It was a journalist, Henri Collet, who coined their eventual collective name "Les Six". While their artistic paths quickly diversified, the group remained friends for the rest of their lives. Tailleferre was a prolific composer, writing in all the genres from small scale chamber works to large scale works including cantatas, orchestral scores, ballets and operas. After enjoying considerable success, by the 1930s her prominence began to fade. There's some evidence to suggest that her two unhappy marriages, and the deprivations of living in occupied France, followed by a temporary exile in the States during the second world war all had an adverse impact on her career. Despite these setbacks, she continued to compose and would teach music almost to the very end of her life. She died in 1983 at the age of 91. Held back perhaps by her own retiring personality and historical views of a female composer, Tailleferre's music has been overshadowed by some of the other members of "Les Six". This week Kate Molleson brings Germaine Tailleferre's music firmly in to the limelight. She's joined in studio by two other Tailleferre enthusiasts, Barbara Kelly from the University of Leeds, and Caroline Potter, who's currently writing a book about Tailleferre. Bild: Alfred Nobel av Emil Österman, Public DomainMusik: Gnosienne av Eric Satie, Storyblock Audio Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/historianu-med-urban-lindstedt. The early USSR owes many of its achievements to Stalin's secret police, called the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, or the NKVD. These guys really took Russian espionage to a new level. Their reach was global in scale; nearly anybody Stalin wanted dead, the NKVD could get it done. They administered the infamous Gulags and repressed their own people. They blurred the lines between internal police and military force by supporting Leftists during the Spanish Civil War and infiltrating the Manhattan Project.   The NKVD was a secret police force dictators dream of: vast, pervasive, feared, deadly, deceptive. They were at Stalin's beck and call.   On this episode, we explore the history and methods of the NKVD under the leadership of Genrikh Yagoda and Nikolai Yezhov. We'll cover the NKVD during WWII under Lavrentri Beria in part 5.   Sources The Russian Secret Police. Ronald Hingley. 1970. Stalin: Paradoxes of Power. Stephen Kotkin. 2014. From 1917 to 1922, the Cheka terrorized the Russian people into dedicating their lives to the Soviet State. Old institutions were destroyed, people were targeted on the basis of their socio-economic status, and farmers were forced into collectives. Those who disobeyed were likely shot, the most unfortunate were subjected to sadistic torture not seen since the time of Ivan the Terrible.  Under the leadership of Vladimir Ilych Lenin, the Bolsheviks seemed at first to bring real, much needed change to Russia. But it didn't take long for Lenin's true intentions to become clear: a dictatorship of the proletariat with himself at the helm.  Lenin was a man with many similarities to those he later deemed political enemies. He was unwavering in his faith in Marxism, but tweaked Marx' original writings into Leninism both in theory and in practice because, when it came to governing, Leninism was only achievable through the Red Terror unleashed by the Cheka. In a wide-ranging and engaging interview, musician Jarvis Cocker tells Michael Berkeley about the role classical music plays in his life and relationships. Fortunately for the world of music Jarvis Cocker abandoned his early ambition to be an astronaut and instead, at the age of 14, had the idea of forming a band called Pulp during an Economics lesson at school in Sheffield. Some 15 years later, Pulp was one of the most successful bands in the world, with a string of witty, emotionally raw, and musically inventive hits rooted in the details of real life. Since then, he has become a much-loved radio presenter with the long-running "Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service" on BBC Six Music, and "Wireless Nights" on Radio 4. Amongst numerous other projects he has formed a new band, JARV IS…, and he has just published a memoir of his childhood and the early years of Pulp called Good Pop, Bad Pop. Jarvis describes how, during a long period of convalescence after an accident, he transformed the way he wrote songs, realizing that the details of everyday life around him in Sheffield provided a goldmine of material. He tells Michael how he coped with fame when it eventually arrived in his thirties, and how he has never conquered his stage fright. Jarvis chooses music by Schubert, Max Richter, Rachmaninoff, Eric Satie and Delius, all guaranteed to give him the ‘tingle' factor. He talks about the power of particular vinyl records to bring back memories of his teenage years in Sheffield and of his son as he was growing up in Paris. And he talks movingly about the role Richter's music played in his relationship with his dying father who had been absent for most of Jarvis's life. Producer: Jane Greenwood

From his first professional gig at the age 16 drumming in a country band to performing at with a symphony orchestra at Carnegie Hall four years later, the career of Michael Emenau has been as prolific as it has been varied.  After completing a degree in classical percussion from McGIll University Michael played for multiple orchestras. Feeling confined he switched his focus over to jazz vibraphone, both of these experiences provided the skills to perform a wide range of musical genres, to date he has recorded vibraphone on over 200 albums. In the early 90's he moved to Tokyo and immersed himself into the acid jazz and EDM scene becoming a member of the weekly UFO's (United Future organisation) live/DJ all night music battles at Club Yellow. He went on to record on 5 of UFO's albums including the platinum selling “Red Hot and Blue”.In the late 90's Michael relocated to San Francisco where his musical interests cracked wide open—producing 3 albums with the Middle Eastern electronic group LUMIN; was a founding member of The Jazz Mafia which incorporated live looping and sampling into small and large jazz ensembles; fronting an Afro-Cuban dance band while also releasing solo jazzy downtempo music with Six Degrees Records and Hearts of Space. In 2005 Michael and his family relocated to Paris where he started a multi-year project unearthing, re-arranging, recording and performing the music of Henry Purcell with Cirque du Soleil star vocalist Elise Velle. This project spilled over to writing a musical, Divine Intervention--an interpretation of the demi-god Dionysus and his actual cultural influence on Classical composers and authors culminating in a 2-week run at the Nova Scotia Fringe Festival.Michael, his family and his beagle currently reside in Montreal where he is a world-touring member of the Grammy nominated “Les Triplettes de Bellville” Cine-Concerts series. He co-leads the Canadian Folk Music Awards nominated “ensemble of the year 2020” SUSSEX, which interweaves folk, ragtime, and roots music.Since the onset of Covid Michael has gone back to the studio and released 3 albums of Lofi Hip-Hop instrumental. If you believe that #thefutureiscreative, support us with a like, a follow, and a share.subscribe: YouTube  / Instagram / TikTok / Facebook / Twitter / Vero / Substack / Patreon It's a great honor to be interviewing Dr. Lynn Garafola today. She is a pioneering dance historian and the author of several books, including "Diaghilev's Ballet Russes" and the forthcoming "Nijinska Choreographer of Ballet's Avant Garde". If you google dance history, she's one of the first people that comes up, so we're very grateful to have the opportunity to discuss a topic with her which happens to be both dear to our hearts and one of her specialties. Dr. Garafola's historical analysis on the Balley Russes has a deep impact on what we do at Oscillations. As with our other interviews, what we're attempting to do today is translate a thoroughgoing expertise into knowledge that contributes to a holistic framework. Danielle and Brendan want to understand the 21st century human experience from the joint lens of cognitive science, art and society. We're looking for broad insights about the role of art in human society, and what the story of the Ballet Russes and its sphere of influence can tell us about human psychology and collaborative settings. What can we learn from a range of radically diverging opinions about art? And what can we learn from the creative works and processes that reflect a collision of renowned minds under unique historical circumstances?Today you'll hear the story of the most impactful performing arts company in the 20th century- a company whose incredible story intersects with an all-star lineup of historical figures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries including: Pablo Picasso, Coco Chanel, Igor Stravinsky, Eric Satie, Francis Poulenc, George Balanchine, Maurice Ravel, Jean Cocteau, Leon Bakst, Oscar Wilde, Mata Hari, Edward Bernays, Gertrude Stein, TS Eliot, Aldous Huxley,  e.e. Cummings, Zelda Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf., John Maynard Keynes, Ida Rubenstein, Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Johannes Brahms, Lincoln Kerstein, Enrico Cecchetti, and Claude Debussy to name just a few.

Bild: Alfred Nobel av Emil Österman, Public DomainMusik: Gnosienne av Eric Satie, Storyblock AudioSee acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

SOPP282: My dream is to be able to play some of my favorite music on a good pipe organ

Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2018 21:21

This question was sent by Anders and he wrote: Hi Vidas and Ausra! I´m following the information you give with great interest. I have been playing the piano for a while but I´m not very good at it, though I really love it and listening to great music, Classic as well as Jazz and Ragtime. In the last period I have started to think much about playing the organ and I've asked the local organist to give me lessons (lessons are free in the Swedish Church) and I hope lessons will start this autumn. I bought an old Electronic organ but am extremely disappointed since the sound is outright awful. It´s not what is called a Church organ, they´re much more expensive. I will throw my Electronic organ and buy some good instrument with a really good sound. The short answer to the questions are: 1.) My Dream is to be able to play "well enough" on the organ some of my favorite music on a good pipe organ. This I wish to do in a Church where I can enjoy the fantastic and mysterious sound of the different voices of the pipes. 2.) What is stopping me is really nothing except: A.) The feeling that I have no time (I do have long working days and other commitments) B.) The feeling that my wife really doesn't enjoy listening to me repeating the difficult parts over and over again. Though she doesn't complain. C.) The lack of a good instrument. And these three things shouldn't stop me. I know and I´m working on it... Now I´ll explain what I mean by playing "well enough": It´s not at all necessary for me to dream of reaching a level of high professionalism, though I fully understand and wish to play with correctness and musicality. For me it´s better to listen to an amateur playing a simple piece very well instead of some half-professional doing a sloppy job on too complicated pieces. I think that for me it will be much more realistic to find, or even better, to be able to arrange the music so it will be simple but still beautiful and retaining the real spirit and essence of the pieces. For that I obviously will have to learn about music theory and learn to play chords and their inversions etc. Maybe not so impossible. For instance i have maybe 5-6 different versions of some piece of music ranging from the very simple to the very difficult. And it´s far from always the fastest version with most notes and difficult fingering that catches the essentials! Thank god for that. I have some rather simple pieces that are really beautiful if you perform them correct and with real spirit. My taste includes classical pieces such as "Poem" by Fibich, pieces by Grieg and Delius and some very nice pieces by Eric Satie. Some jazz pieces I wish to play are maybe not very well known but some are jazz standards. I especially point out some outstanding jazz recordings made by Fats Waller in 1927 on a Church pipe organ (Estey). There has not been any recordings of jazz organ to compare with before or after these few musical pearls, so rich in harmony and feeling. Of course I will never be able to play like Waller did, far from. But maybe be able to play some simplified and still beautiful version in a not too fast tempo. In my opinion speed is not often very important, many pieces win on being played slower but correctly giving time to listen to the music. As a rounding off I wish to say that I fully appreciate and try to apply the principles of slow playing in practice, repeating until I play without faults and learning a piece step by step. Actually I was smiling with remembrance when I read through your "Organ practice is a privilege". The reason is that I already knew about the principles since my last wife was a really good piano teacher (from St Petersburg). And she applied these rules. Before she died 6 years ago I was lucky to learn the importance of these rules, though I was never a very good pupil. And it was maybe not so easy to have the wife as a teacher (she was really serious). Best of Wishes, Anders from Sweden
