This episode kicks off a mini-series dedicated to #Housing2030, a joint international initiative of housing experts from over 56 governments through UNECE and UN Habitat and 43,000 affordable housing providers and neighbourhood developers represented by Housing Europe with the aim to improve the capacity of national and local governments to formulate policies that improve housing affordability and sustainability. As the countdown to the first virtual event of the ‘Housing 2030’ initiative, taking place on May 20th has started we’re looking at its central theme which is Land with the help of 3 excellent guests. For this first episode, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Julie Lawson, Honorary Associate Professor for the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute in the Centre for Urban Research of RMIT University. Julie has undertaken the task of drafting the Housing 2030 report in co-operation with a team of authors including Professor Michelle Norris (University College Dublin; Irish Housing Finance Agency), Dr. Kat Grimsley (George Mason School of Business) and Dr. Sergio Nasarre-Aznar (UNESCO Housing Chair at the University Rovira i Virgili). However, today, I’ve asked to have a Skype Call to discuss the finding of another insightful and timely piece of work she has put together along with Professor Hannu Ruanovaara. The purpose of this international review, that was funded by the Academy of Finland, is to examine the range of land policy instruments governments used to influence housing affordability and social inclusion to inform best practice in policy development. The land policy instruments covered include: Public land banking, Public land leasing, Land re-adjustment, Land value recapture, Regulatory planning, Comprehensive neighbourhood planning and addressing real estate platform economy. The geographical scope includes Europe, Asia, North American and Australia. On a sunny afternoon on the last day of April, we discussed with Dr. Julie Lawson why the relationship between land policy, social cohesion and housing is fundamental, the role of citizens in decisions around land management as well as what it takes to stop the overwhelming trend of financialization of land and housing. We’re back with yet another episode of our series around the housing aspect of the Coronavirus Crisis, in which we are addressing a number of questions that are probably in your mind as well, with one special guest each time. Today, we’re making the link with the European Commission flagship initiative, the EU Green Deal and the so called ‘Renovation Wave’ that is envisaged to improve the condition of Europe’s building stock. Ciaran Cuffe is an Irish Member of the European Parliament with the Greens and is currently busy being the Rapporteur of the much-expect report “Maximising the energy efficiency potential of the EU building stock”. This is supposed to set out the view of the Parliament on most aspects of energy efficiency in buildings, while also making concrete suggestions for the content of the Renovation Wave. We asked Ciaran to have a Skype Call to discuss the new COVID19 reality that is taking shape will influence the priorities and objectives of the EU Green Deal. What needs to be changed in the way we approach energy efficiency in our buildings? We have also asked Ciaran how this Report aims to address the different segments of the housing market and we concluded our conversation wondering whether the EU Green Deal and the ‘Renovation Wave’ become the EU’s 2020 Marshall Plan. 16 Termine in 1 Woche – ich glaube, das war ein Rekord für mich. Die Leute die mich schon länger kennen, wissen ja, dass ich gerne rede, deswegen stellt so ein Meeting-Marathon für mich kein großes Problem dar. Eher profitiere ich sehr davon, dass ich mich richtig in einen Flow begebe und innerhalb weniger Tage unfassbar viele neue Ideen und Projekte anstoßen kann. Wichtige Faktoren für ein erfolgreiches Meeting – egal ob persönlich oder über einen Call – sind für mich: Pünktlichkeit, gute Vorbereitung und eine konkrete Zielsetzung. Auch wenn einige Termine erst einmal nur zum Kennenlernen gedacht sind, wenn ich beispielsweise einen interessanten XING-Kontakt über einen Skype-Call, „treffe“, steht am Ende immer die konkrete Frage nach einer potentiellen Zusammenarbeit. Gerade in Meetings, die dein Business voranbringen können, solltest du dich trauen Ideen zu pitchen und Fragen zu stellen. Zeit ist nun mal Geld und in diesem Fall geht es nicht nur um deine, sondern auch um die kostbare Zeit eines anderen Unternehmers. Ob aus all den Ideen am Ende etwas wird, bleibt abzuwarten. Der erste Schritt ist zumindest gemacht und ich bin hochmotiviert! In der nächsten Woche steht erst einmal das Nachbearbeiten und Nachfassen an, wonach es dann in die konkretere Planung geht. Es bleibt spannend.

Die achte Folge des Nachobros "Talk den Talk" Podcasts, in der achten Folge mussten wir auf Skype zurückgreifen da Jaulana zur Zeit krank ist und wir uns nicht gegenseitig anstecken wollen. In der Folge babbeln wir über Unfälle witzige Momente die uns in der letzten Woche passiert sind und wie wichtig manche Jobs doch sind die normalerweise nicht so respektiert werden.

Natürlich stehe ich auch per Mail oder gern auch in einem Skype-Call jedem Rede und Antwort, der sich den Traum einer Kreuzfahrt erfüllen möchte. Nachdem beim Buchen der Kreuzfahrt alles glatt ging, war bei meinen anderen Terminen in dieser Woche irgendwie der Wurm drin. Wegen Krankheit und aufgrund von schlechtem Wetter mussten die Drehtermine von „Menschen im Porträt“ verschoben werden, ein weiterer Termin am Donnerstag wurde spontan auf die nächste Woche verlegt. Im ersten Moment sind solche Planänderungen ärgerlich, denn natürlich muss ein neuer Termin gefunden werden und damit sind auch die kommenden Wochen davon betroffen. Doch diese Woche wurde mir wieder einmal bewusst, dass ich angesichts solcher Abweichungen getrost locker bleiben kann. Denn scheinbar ist das Universum verantwortlich für meinen Terminplan und weiß am besten, was gut für mich ist.

Und jeder Skype-Call beginnt mit dem hello, mit so einem ganz ruhigen, gemütlichen Einstieg. Ja, hallo Manuel, [Hallo Cari.] wie geht es dir heute? Manuel: [0:43] Sehr gut. Ich habe ein paar Announcements und Follow-ups. Cari: [0:50] Oh, dann leg mal los! Manuel: [0:51] Also, das erste Announcement ist, dass es ein neues Feature gibt von unserem Podcast. Also eigentlich kein neues Feature, aber eine neue Erfindung, sagen wir mal. Cari: [1:03] Eine Erfindung, wow! Manuel: [1:05] Und zwar bieten ja wir für unsere Mitglieder die Vokabelhilfe an, wo man beim Zuhören immer die wichtigsten Wörter und die englischen Übersetzungen sieht. Und das funktioniert bis jetzt nur in bestimmten Podcast-Apps auf Smartphones. Also, man kann nur auf dem Smartphone zuhören und dann in seiner Podcast-App das sehen. Und wir haben immer wieder mal E-Mails bekommen von Mitgliedern, die aber gerne die Vokabelhilfe auch am Computer verfolgen wollten und am Computer den Podcast hören wollen. Und dafür habe ich jetzt eine Lösung gefunden. Wir bieten jetzt immer zusätzlich, und zwar ab sofort und jetzt rückwirkend seit Episode 12, einen Download für ein Video an. Und dieses Video kann man sich einfach runterladen und da ist dann genau die Vokabelhilfe drin, die man sonst auf dem Handy sieht und genau, das ist für unsere Mitglieder. Cari: [2:05] Also, man sieht dann quasi immer das … also, die wechseln auch jede Minute. Manuel: [2:10] Das, genau … das ist haargenau so, wie man es auch auf dem Handy sehen würde. Aber so kann man es eben auch auf dem Computer sehen. Weil es weder für Windows noch für Mac im Moment Podcast-Apps gibt, die diese Kapitel-Bilder, die wir da nutzen, um das möglich zu machen, unterstützen. Cari: [2:27] Du bist ja ein Fuchs. Manuel: [2:28] Fuchs, ne? Cari: [2:30] Und braucht man dafür ein Programm oder wie sieht das aus? Manuel: [2:33] Nein, das ist ein ganz normales Video. Das kann man sich einfach runterladen, das kann man sogar auch im Browser dann anschauen oder man kann es runterladen und sich anschauen. Cari: [2:41] Ganz schön smart, Manuel! Manuel: [2:43] So, dann habe ich ein Follow-up. Eine Follow-up-Frage zu der Privileg-Episode. Also, das war vor zwei Wochen. Auf Englisch, von DJ … glaube, er nennt sich einfach DJ, aus den USA: "I had another question, when you have a chance. In America there are many people who wish to be referred to by gender-neutral pronouns. They instead of he or she. Is there an equivalent in German?" Also, ich kenne das, dass es Leute gibt, die sich nicht strikt nur mit einem Geschlecht identifizieren und die deswegen, deshalb das Pronomen they bevorzugen, weil es neutral ist. Und die Frage ist: Gibt es das auch auf Deutsch? Und ich habe dazu einfach mal Sarah geschrieben, die wir hier als Gast hatten im Podcast. Und sie hat mir geantwortet: "Leider nicht so richtig. Es gibt ein paar Neo-Pronomen. Vor allem sier und xier werden häufiger benutzt, manche benutzen auch im Deutschen they." Aber … und manche es und manche benutzen gar kein Pronom, also wollen immer, dass der Name eingesetzt wird. Und sie sagt, also sie findet, wenn man einfach das englische they nimmt, das benutzt sie eigentlich am liebsten, selbst im Deutschen und findet diese deutschen Neo-Pronomen wenig alltagstauglich. Das ist ihre Antwort. Also, es scheint so, als würde es da im Deutschen noch nicht so wirklich eine Lösung geben, auf die sich alle geeinigt haben.
