How well do you remember high school? Chances are you are more likely to remember the big events that happened—prom, the homecoming dance where you spilled spiked fruit punch all over your crisp white shirt*, and graduation, but would you remember something as random as someone coming up to you and saying something off beat? Probably not, right? Well, my guest today not only remembered a random (and creepy) comment in crisp detail, it inspired her to craft a novel about it! *That totally didn't happen to me. It is spooky season and our first Hallowe'en month guest is X and Pearl writer-director and cinema devotee Ti West, who joins hosts Gemma and Slim to talk about four films that influenced his movie-making career: Bad Taste, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Two-Lane Blacktop, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. We also attempt to squeeze Ti for details on MaXXXine, and he tells us some Pearl tales, including how that final shot came about. Plus: being a Hollywood outsider, the movies that give us permission to be filmmakers, our demands for a Pearl-trilogy theme park, Ti's defence of Spielberg's West Side Story, rubbing shoulders with Peter Jackson, the best moment in cinema ever that involves Indiana Jones, the greatest tagline in cinema ever, why Gemma is obsessed with maggots, and what made Slim cry this week. In the first supplemental episode of Season 3, we return to where we began: West Side Story (2021) directed by Stephen Spielberg, starring Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Ariana DeBose, and Rita Moreno. We discuss the evolution of mainstream social awareness over the past 60 years and how this impacts the production and meaning of the film (a phenomenon Charisse refers to as “historical HD”), including the role of gentrification in racial and class-based strife, the attempt to rectify the racial offenses of the first film, and how Rita Moreno's return provides a nuanced take on the Romeo and Juliet story itself.
The Patricia Highsmith novel The Talented Mr. Ripley has been adapted twice for the screen - most recently in 1995 in a star studded version by director Anthony Minghella. But the novel's first filmed version came in 1960 from two time Oscar winning director Rene Clement. Called Purple Noon in an ode to the vibrant Italian sky over Sicily where the story was set and shot, Clement's version casts Alain Delon as the sinister Tom Ripley and Maurice Renot as rich playboy Dickie (called Philippe in this film). Dan and Vicky discuss the moody French classic as well as lots of recently seen including the new Dr. Strange, the return of the The Kids in the Hall, 1945's The Seventh Veil, Spielberg's West Side Story, the new Firestarter and the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards in Shudder TV. Take a listen also for details on Dan's trip to wine country in California and Vicky's unfortunate tumble in Chelsea. Hot Date 151: Purple Noon. In order to salvage their continually plummeting ratings, the Academy Awards asked three quasi-famous hosts to help people care about the films that no one has seen and the ceremony no one is watching. Unfortunately, Joel, Kent & Zack were busy recording this episode, so the Oscars will have to settle for less. Nevertheless, we're going to continue our tradition of making predictions for the Academy Award winners on this episode of Baconsale. Listen as Kent tries to not follow his heart, Joel scours the web to find answers, and Zack plays the odds in Vegas. Is something coming for Spielberg's West Side Story? Will King Richard finally be crowned? Can Encanto work its magic on the voters? Will The Power of the Dog receive Best in Show? Press play to hear our thoughts. And visit Baconsale.com to submit your own predictions for the 94th Academy Awards on our official ballot for a chance to win a fabulous cinematic prize!

Why would Steven Spielberg want to make a straightforward remake of the 1961 Best Picture-winning musical West Side Story? And could such a musical remake be good in the year 2021? The Lodgecast is joined by some magical musical sisters as we try to answer the many questions we had about Spielberg's West Side Story (2021). The Jets face off against the Sharks in Manhattan's West Side, and the movie contains all the classic musical hits written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. The movie stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, and Mike Faist. And 90-year-old actress Rita Moreno returns in a new supporting role! As with almost all modern musicals this move was a box office bomb!
This week, I'm joined by my friends Cole and James to discuss two new releases, both Shakespeare adaptations, Steven Spielberg's first ever musical, West Side Story, and Joel Coen's first solo filmmaking effort, The Tragedy of Macbeth.
For our final Hot Date of 2021, we chose Putney Swope, written and directed by Robert Downey Sr. As an indictment of corporate greed, the advertising business and race, the film was Downey's reaction to working for years in a production company whose main client was a powerful ad agency. There were no takers for the movie from the major studios so Downey turned to independent producer and distributor Don Rugoff, who placed the film in his art houses across the country and turned it into a major underground hit. Dan and Vicky discuss the film, along with lots of recently seen including Sex and the City follow up And Just Like That, NBC's Annie Live, Disney's Encanto, House of Gucci, Being the Ricardos, 1992's Glengarry Glen Ross, 1974's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Spielberg's West Side Story, and a bunch of Hammer horror. Andy Farnsworth joinsKSL-TVto help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of December 10, 2021. Steven Spielberg's remake of the beloved 1961 musical “West Side Story” is a cinematically beautiful and emotional film done right; right cast, right cinematography, right story choices, and right at home on the big screen. Over on Apple Plus TV “Snoopy Presents: For Auld Lang Syne” might be a film worthy of a new Peanuts' holiday tradition. And for fans of The Real Housewives franchise on Bravo, Peacock's “The Housewives of the North Pole” is a similar holiday chick-flick pick. Producer KellieAnn wraps up this episode with a theatre nerd, and former Jet girl's, take on the new "West Side Story." Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. The title of the episode almost says it all but it turns out both Erik Childress and Sergio Mims have a lot to say about Steven Spielberg's remake of the Oscar-winning 1961 musical. Sergio, who also hosts a classical music show on WHPK Radio in Chicago, takes us through the choreographers, Leonard Bernstein and his thoughts both positive and negative on the original. Erik also shares his thoughts on how the 1961 film shaped his perspective on musicals at an early age and how the new film has managed to surpass it at every level. Both marvel at one particular performance in the remake which also manages to honor another with some key changes made to the original text. While they may have some quibbles and disagree here and there one thing they agree on is this is one of the best films of 2021.

Following a rapturous reception, Spielberg's West Side Story has made itself known to the world! Some critics are praising the film as "Top-Tier Spielberg" and the word "Best Picture" has been thrown around a couple of times, although is this just positive early buzz that is destined to die? Or do we have a bonafide contender on our hands? On this episode of Gone With The Win, we dive deep into what this could mean for the Oscar race and, of course, we have very different opinions... as always, cue the music.
