Is it fully constructed? Or is it stuck in the middle of construction somewhere? I guess I should explain before I ask questions like that. I'm sure at some point in your high school or collegiate career you have come across Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Abraham Maslow proposed that these five needs are the motivators behind human behavior. They start at the bottom of the pyramid with the most basic of needs and work up to the more complicated and self-realized toward the top. Initially it was believed the lower goals always had to be completed first with a linear view of how they are accomplished, it is accepted now that different individuals and cultures may achieve various levels at different times. This coming Monday I plan to load up with three of my friends and go west. Well, west, then north, then more west. It will be quite a long ride—26 hours or more to be exact. But knowing the company, I'm counting on it being an epic journey. We went on this trip together several years ago and we have been wanting to take a trip back to Gillette Wyoming to hunt pronghorn ever since. So we finally made the trip happen this year. Unfortunately I didn't get drawn for a pronghorn tag but was able to secure a whitetail doe tag to at least get to take a shot at something. So tonight I spent a little time at the range. I needed to make sure that my equipment was still true to form from last year's whitetail deer season in Alabama. Three shots at a steel plate at 200 yards confirmed I am indeed ready to head out. My sights were on and my rifle true. Now to pack up and hit the road on Monday morning. Shame is heavy—and most of us carry more of it than we realize. Therapist and author Dr. Zoe Shaw joins me to unpack complex shame and share what it really takes to heal, reclaim your worth, and show up fully as yourself.Therapist and author Dr. Zoe Shaw introduces the concept of complex shame—a deeper, more persistent form of shame that can't be erased with outside compassion alone.Dr. Zoe opens up about her own story of teenage pregnancy, being sent away to a maternity home, and the years of overachievement she used to mask her pain. She explains how complex shame develops, the many ways it shows up—racial, generational, religious, body, gender—and why real healing requires self-compassion, accountability, and forgiveness. At the heart of her message: you are worthy to show up exactly as you are.✨ In this episode, we cover:The difference between “simple” shame and complex shameDr. Zoe's personal journey through secrecy, grief, and overachievementThe many forms of shame and how to recognize themWhy self-compassion is non-negotiable for healingTools for forgiveness and rewriting your storyHow releasing shame creates freedom, authenticity, and hope
So many of us have been taught to ignore our bodies—to overwork, overgive, and override our intuition. In this episode, I'm joined by intuitive psychic medium and author Aycee Brown, who shares how human design, astrology, numerology, and ancestral wisdom can guide us back home to ourselves.Aycee Brown brings a refreshing, grounded perspective to the world of spirituality. As a psychic medium and teacher, she uses tools like human design, numerology, and astrology not as rigid labels, but as pathways to self-trust and healing. In our conversation, Aycee reflects on growing up in a family of healers, healing from emotionally immature parents, and what it means to shed the weight of respectability politics. We talk about the traps of capitalism and hustle culture, how projectors often get mislabeled as “overnight successes,” and the importance of honoring your design in relationships. In this episode, we cover:How human design, numerology, astrology, and cardology intersectThe truth behind “overnight success” and why projectors feel it mostHealing the wounds of eldest daughters and emotionally immature parentsThe ways capitalism disconnects us from intuition—and how to resistUsing your human design to navigate love, work, and friendshipsResources & LinksConnect with Aycee: ayceebrown.com | @ayceebrownCLICK HERE to Pre-order her forthcoming book Embody Your MagicExplore Aycee's courses and workshops on human design, astrology, and numerology
Send us a textWhat happens when life's greatest challenge becomes your greatest stepping stone? In this powerful conversation, Darren Warren, President and CEO of Stor-Mor Portable Buildings, shares his remarkable journey from a 16-year-old cancer patient with a 40% survival rate to becoming an innovative leader in the shed industry.Darren's story begins in 1998 when his non-Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis led his father to start building portable sheds—allowing young Darren to participate in the family business while undergoing 120 chemotherapy treatments at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. What started as a solution to a family crisis evolved into a passion and eventually, industry leadership with a people-first approach."It's our people, it's our people, it's our people," Darren emphasizes as the true secret to Stor-Mor's success. This isn't just a catchphrase but a deeply held belief that has shaped their business decisions—including the surprising choice to dismantle their in-house online sales department to funnel leads to their dealers instead, resulting in a $1 million sales increase in just one month. The conversation dives into the shed industry's evolution beyond "just building boxes," exploring vertical integration, product diversification into post-frame buildings and carports, and the crucial balance between online and brick-and-mortar sales. Darren warns against the "race to the bottom" pricing strategies while advocating for quality, service, and innovation as the path forward.Perhaps most compelling is Darren's unwavering commitment to purpose beyond profit. "Between God and St. Jude, I'm here," he states, explaining why charitable initiatives remain central to Stor-Mor's identity. This commitment extends to his vision for the industry—calling for greater collaboration among competitors to establish ethical practices and combat growing fraud concerns.Whether you're in the shed industry or simply appreciate stories of resilience and purpose-driven leadership, this episode offers valuable insights on transforming personal challenges into stepping stones for helping others. As Darren poignantly asks, "What's the glory in making all the money and seeing no one else's life be better around you?"For more information or to know more about the Shed Geek Podcast visit us at our website.Would you like to receive our weekly newsletter? In memory of Tabitha Lynn Gean (4/10/82-9/23/99) Welcome in the Friday refresh brought to you by Team Ben and Travis for St Jude Marathon weekend. Josh Thorne and I are still trying to reach our $4000 commitment each and we could use your help. That's BenandTravis.com and the St Jude tab. A few days ago I posted something on social media. I hadn't really said a lot over the years online about the thing that pushed me towards counseling as a profession. It wasn't the final push but it started the interest and the journey. It was of the day my girlfriend was killed in a tragic car accident. This week was the 26th anniversary of that event and there have been other tragic events that have taken place locally that hit close to my heart. I felt the lessons learned then, could also help some now. What I learned was sometimes all the world needs is for one person to be vulnerable and it leads to others opening up like they haven't been able to before. You can find the full post here: https://www.benandtravis.com/blog/in-memory-of-tabitha-lynn-gean Links mentioned in this episode: http://www.benandtravis.com http://www.facebook.com/groups/benandtravis http://www.patreon.com/benandtravis Reframing Hope Book https://www.benandtravis.com/books Helping. Courtney is living her best life, enjoying time with friends in New York City and working hard as she establishes her career. She also has sickle cell disease. And she deals with the physical and emotional effects of it day in and day out.Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder that affects about 100,000 people in the United States, predominantly African Americans. The disease affects red blood cells. Normally, they're round and plump. Sickle cell disease warps them into crescent shapes. That makes them less flexible and less able to carry oxygen to internal organs. A person with sickle cell disease faces a lifetime of potential health complications like heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and frequent bouts of intense pain.In this conversation, Courtney talks about the care and education about sickle cell disease she received as a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She says it's important to find community, to have a strong base of support, and to know how to advocate for yourself.Courtney was one of the very first babies at St. Jude to be part of a study called BABYHUG. It helped pave the way for a medication called hydroxyurea to be approved for young children with sickle cell disease. She has high hopes for more innovations in treatment in the future.St. Jude is the primary treatment center for children with sickle cell disease in the Memphis area, and it is also one of the largest sickle cell disease programs in the country. In 1983, a St. Jude patient was the first person to be cured of sickle cell disease through a bone marrow transplant. Today, in addition to participating in and leading several clinical trials studying the use of hydroxyurea in children, St. Jude is also studying gene therapy as a potential cure for sickle cell disease as well as techniques to make stem cell transplantation less risky and more broadly accessible. You can find more information about research into sickle cell disease and the patients and families who find care at St. Jude herehttps://www.stjude.org/get-involved/other-ways/sickle-cell-awareness-month.html#impact

I attended a prayer service on Monday for the local elections that were to take place on Tuesday. It was a powerful hour of strong prayers, thoughtful readings, and encouraging fellowship. When ambition meets authenticity, everything changes. In this episode, I'm joined by writer, former attorney, and media strategist Faye McCray for a conversation about career pivots, parenting, and finding yourself beyond the grind. We talk about navigating predominantly white spaces, raising kids with intention, and why authenticity (not hustle) should be our measure of success.Faye also shares her journey from law to media and consulting, how storytelling can build true connection, and the boundaries that help her protect her peace. If you've been rethinking your career path, craving more balance, or just wanting to feel more like yourself in every space you occupy, this one's for you.In this episode we discussed:Your career path doesn't have to be linear to be successful.Connection and empathy are essential in both life and business.Parenting is a lesson in flexibility, patience, and introspection.Boundaries protect your energy and purpose.Authenticity is the new measure of success.Want more?
