Welcome into the Friday refresh brought to you by St Jude marathon weekend fundraiser. Thanks to all you who helped and donated and played in the Stayin Alice disco dodgeball tournament last weekend. I have less than $1000 to raise for my race so go to https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=5816464&fr_id=164588&pg=personal to donate. Have you ever wondered why we tend to focus more on the negative things in life? Why is it that sadness and worry and anger seem to weigh so heavily while memories that are much more joyful and happy and peaceful seem a little harder to recall and seem to weigh much less? It is what psychologists call Negativity Bias. Negativity Bias is an innate psychological tendency to emphasize negative experiences over positive ones. It influences our perception of events, often making us dwell more on bad experiences, like criticism or failure. This talk was given by Rev Steve Clarke at St Jude's Church, Southsea on 9th August 2026. The reading was Psalm 46. Psalm 46 is one of the best-known psalms in the Bible, often read on Remembrance Sunday, with its famous line "Be still and know that I am God." In this talk, we explore what this ancient hymn — written against the backdrop of the threatened Assyrian invasion of Jerusalem — has to say to us today, in a world of war, uncertainty and personal struggle. Along the way, we look at how the sea and stormy waters are pictured in Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, and how Jesus calming the storm shows us a God who is both with us in the boat and over the waves. Beginning with a vivid memory of watching a dry riverbed in South Wales become a rushing river, the talk traces three widening circles of hope in the psalm: God is over and in the chaos of our lives, of our city, and of all things. There is a warm invitation to prayer-walk the streets of Southsea, praying for the river of God's love to flow through the city, and the talk closes with a guided time of stillness using a contemporary form of the ancient Jesus Prayer. Whether you're a regular churchgoer or simply exploring faith, this is a thoughtful and encouraging listen for anxious times.

The commissioning of the New St. Jude Hospital continues in phases as health officials work to ensure that all safety, staffing, equipment, and operational requirements are met. The facility currently has 471 of the approximately 721 staff members required, with additional recruitment and deployment expected as more services become operational.
Patients receiving treatment at the newly opened Dialysis Unit at St. Jude Hospital are expressing gratitude for the modern, purpose-built facility. The new unit, which replaces the temporary facility at the George Odlum Stadium, features 15 treatment chairs and provides dialysis services to 45 patients across three daily shifts.
Minister for Health, Wellness and Nutrition Hon. Moses Jn. Baptiste has dismissed reports of an electrical fire at the newly reconstructed St. Jude Hospital. The Minister says neither his ministry nor the relevant authorities, including the Saint Lucia Fire Service and electrical department, have provided any official report confirming such an incident.
St. Jude Hospital has officially opened a new purpose-built dialysis unit equipped with 15 dialysis chairs and the capacity to provide three treatment shifts daily. The facility currently serves 45 patients and is designed to improve the comfort and quality of care for persons requiring dialysis.
The commissioning of the Dialysis Unit at the St. Jude Hospital (Augier site) marks a significant milestone in the Government of Saint Lucia's ongoing efforts to strengthen the delivery of healthcare services and also to improve access to dialysis services to residents in the south of the island. The dialysis unit is expected to enhance patient comfort while accessing care in a more modern environment. With the addition of the dialysis unit as the government continues to commission the St. Jude Hospital in a phased approach, reinforces the commitment to investing in the health and well-being of the people and also strengthening the healthcare system.

Darline Medina's daughter Brooklyn was full of health for the 1st 2 years of her life until the winter of 2023 when Brooklyn began to experience abnormal movements in her left eye. Her eye looked okay when examined by an eye doctor but her walking did not look okay and this led to her diagnosis of DIPG. Brooklyn's diagnosis took place in April of 2023 but her life span from that day until her passing on February 17th of 2024, was just 10 months, and took place one month before her 4th birthday.
This talk was given by Helen Bolton at St Jude's Church, Southsea on 13 July 2025. The reading was Acts 18:1–18, with supporting passages from 1 Corinthians 2:1–5, Romans 16, Matthew 7:8, Joshua 1:9, Isaiah 41:10, and John 14:27. Helen explores the final stage of Paul's second missionary journey and what his time in Corinth can teach us about living out our faith today. She traces the strategic and courageous steps Paul took — choosing a difficult city, working alongside others, reasoning with those who opposed him, and persevering through God's power rather than his own strength. The talk draws on both Luke's account in Acts and Paul's own words in his letters to build a rich picture of a man who was honest about his weakness and fear, yet wholly committed to God's calling. With warmth and honesty, Helen reflects on how Paul's example speaks into our own lives — in our workplaces, families, and relationships where faith doesn't always come easily. She shares her own story of returning to faith after a prompting one Good Friday, and gently asks whether we share our faith boldly or apologetically. The repeated biblical refrain "do not be afraid" runs through the talk as a thread of encouragement, reminding us that God's presence and power sustain us even when the journey feels difficult. A thoughtful and personal talk to close the church's series on Acts.
Have you ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes of a school — and the challenges a school principal faces? As a mother of four almost-adult children, I feel like I've spent a significant portion of my life navigating the school system. So, I was fascinated to sit down with former school principal, author and yoga teacher Susan Simon to hear her perspective from the other side of the school gates. In this episode of It's a Mindset, Susan shares the realities of leading a school and the challenges principals face behind the scenes. We explore how much teaching has changed in recent years, particularly with the increasing demands of administration and curriculum, and the impact these changes can have on educators and school communities. But Susan's story extends well beyond the school gates. We also explore her transition from school principal to yoga teacher and the shift in identity that can come when we leave a role that has defined us for so long. Susan also opens up about her breast cancer diagnosis and how it profoundly changed the way she values her life and the people in it. This conversation made me reflect on how closely we can tie our identity to what we do — and the courage it can take to step into a new chapter when a role we've held for so long comes to an end. Key Episode Takeaways: The challenges school principals face behind the scenes and the complexity of leading a school community. How teaching has changed, particularly with increasing administrative and curriculum demands. Susan's transition from school principal to yoga teacher and the identity shift that can come when we leave a long-held role. How a breast cancer diagnosis changed Susan's perspective and deepened her appreciation for life and the people she loves. About the Guest Susan Simon lives on five acres of natural bushland in Tanawha, in south-east Queensland. She and her husband Geoff head up a lively family of six adult children and an emerging gaggle of grandchildren. Simon loves spending time with family and friends, and her passions include writing, yoga, travel, art and music. Simon has been writing creatively all her life, in journals, poetry and short stories. The Secrets of St Jude's is her first full length novel. She was inspired to write it through the encouragement of colleagues in a creative writers' group. Born in Suffolk, England, Simon went to school in Cambridge. She studied at the University of Nottingham and graduated with Joint Honours in English and Fine Art. After working in London, she moved to Australia. Simon took up the profession of teaching and eventually became a school principal of three independent schools, including being the founding principal of St Andrew's Anglican College in Peregian. She graduated with her doctorate in 2008 which paved the way for a career in academia with a focus on teacher education and school leadership. Tonight, I'm joined by two remarkable young ladies who are proving that you are never too young to make a difference. Maelin Carlson and Landri Cruse, along with Maelin's mom, Megan Carlson, will share how a simple lemonade stand has grown into a mission of hope for the children and families served by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. What began with two best friends wanting to help has become a community effort that has raised more than $21,000 over the past three years. We'll talk about Maelin's journey as a St. Jude patient, the friendship that brought these girls together, the generosity of local businesses and neighbors, and why they spend all year dreaming up new ways to make an even bigger impact. Their 4th annual lemonade stand will take place on July 11th in Madison, and their story is a reminder that kindness, compassion, and determination can change lives, one cup at a time. Real stories. Real people. Real impact. News That Unites!™️

There's a moment many leaders experience. The role that once gave you energy, purpose and identity starts to feel heavier. Not because you've stopped caring or lost your capability — but because something no longer fits. In this episode of Leading You, I sit down with Susan Simon — educator, former principal of three independent Queensland schools, and author of debut novel The Secrets of St Jude's — for a deeply honest conversation about what happens when your leadership identity starts to disconnect from who you're becoming. After more than four decades in Australian school communities, Susan brings an insider's perspective on the emotional complexity of leadership: the joy of building empowered teams, the weight of competing stakeholder expectations, the politics, the pressure — and eventually, the grief of leaving a role that once defined her. This conversation goes far beyond education. It's for anyone in leadership, corporate, or business who has quietly wondered: Is this still who I am? What we cover: Why strong leadership often feels invisible to the person doing it The emotional load of leading complex organisations with competing expectations The quiet warning signs that something has shifted — before crisis hits Why leaving a leadership role can feel like grief, not just a career change The risk of letting work become your entire identity How to reconnect with yourself outside of your title Why grounding practices aren't a luxury — they're a leadership necessity Susan's debut novel and the psychological complexity of elite school communities Timestamps00:00 Life Components First00:43 Meet Susan Simon02:16 Leadership In Flow08:09 Stakeholders And Pressure11:05 When Identity Shifts17:37 Leaving And New Paths20:22 Grief And Attachment24:34 Advice For Stuck Leaders28:53 Inside The Debut Novel33:11 Wrap Up And Reviews Links:Learn more about my group coaching program hereGet the Clarity Compass here Connect with Julie:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julie-hyde/Instagram: @juliehydeleadsWebsite: https://juliehyde.com.au Connect with Susan:Website: https://susan-simon.com/Instagram: @susan.simon_authorPurchase link: https://www.simonandschuster.com.au/books/The-Secrets-of-St-Judes/Susan-Simon/9781922190154See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most founders think marketing is about getting clients and making sales. But after sitting in a room with Olympic gold medalists, ex-Google executives and some of the most powerful female founders in the nation at an invite-only St. Jude's summit — Savannah realized something much bigger. Marketing is about access. Access to rooms, people, opportunities and influence. And the life you end up living is shaped by the conversations you get invited into. In this episode of Running With Wolves, Savannah shares her personal reflections from the Legacy of Hope summit and what it made her realize about the true power of marketing — and how to use it to open doors you didn't even know existed. Here's what this episode covers: Why marketing is the vehicle that opens every door — not just the ones that lead to sales How to work backwards from your goal to build a marketing strategy that actually gets you there Why leaving room for magic is the most important thing you can do as AI takes over execution How to use AI as a tool without losing the humanity that makes your marketing powerful Apply to work with Savannah HERE: http://bit.ly/applywlfpodcast or DM her on Instagram @itssavannahjordan ( / itssavannahjordan ) with your takeaway. marketing strategy, personal reflection, female founder, St. Jude's summit, AI and marketing, organic marketing 2026, marketing opens doors, influence and impact
