This week, Alicia invited Alicia King Anderson Ph.D. to talk all things Persephone and Hades, the Queen and King of the Underworld. We unpack the myth of this royal couple down below. How does a young girl, Kore, complete the transformation into Persephone? Who is Hades and why is he messing with his niece, Kore? How does the whole snatching of the beautiful maiden go down, and what happens in the Underworld? It's a story with complicated supernatural family ties, a kidnapping, a mother's grief, famine, a marriage, and - big headline - the introduction of seasons into the human world. And this myth was a foundational piece of the Eleusinian Mysteries, which helped initiates of the cult of Demeter and Persephone abandon their fear of death. Mylonas Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 28 December 2024 is George E. Mylonas.George Emmanuel Mylonas (Greek: Γεώργιος Μυλωνάς, romanized: Georgios Mylonas, Greek pronunciation: [/ʝe'oɾʝios myːlo'nas/], ye-OR-yios mee-loh-NAS; December 21, [O. S. December 9] 1898 – April 15, 1988) was a Greek archaeologist of ancient Greece and of Aegean prehistory. He excavated widely, particularly at Olynthus, Eleusis and Mycenae, where he made the first archaeological study and publication of Grave Circle B, the earliest known monumentalized burials at the site.Mylonas was born in Smyrna, then part of the Ottoman Empire, and received an elite education. He enrolled in 1919 at the University of Athens to study classics, joined the Greek Army, and fought in the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922. He witnessed the destruction of Smyrna in September 1922, and was subsequently taken prisoner; he was recaptured after a brief escape, but was released in 1923 after bribing his captors with money sent by his American contacts. In 1924, Mylonas began working for the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, with which he retained a lifelong association. He became its first bursar the following year, and took part in excavations at Corinth, Nemea and Olynthus under its auspices. After receiving his Ph. D. from the University of Athens in 1927, he moved to Johns Hopkins University in the United States to study under David Moore Robinson, his excavation director from Olynthus. He subsequently taught at the University of Chicago. After a brief return to Greece, during which he taught at a gymnasium and made his first excavations at Eleusis, he was hired by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1931, before moving to Washington University in St. Louis in 1933, where he remained until returning permanently to Greece in 1969. There, he was prominent in the Archaeological Society of Athens and in efforts to conserve the monuments of the Acropolis of Athens.Mylonas's excavation work included the sites of Pylos, Artemision, Mekyberna, Polystylos and Aspropotamos. Along with John Papadimitriou, he was given responsibility for the excavation of Mycenae's Grave Circle B in the early 1950s, and from 1957 until 1985 excavated on the citadel of the site. His excavations helped to establish the chronological relationships between Mycenae's structures, which had been excavated piecemeal over the preceding century, and to determine the religious function of the site's Cult Center, to which he gave its name. He was awarded the Order of George I, the Royal Order of the Phoenix and the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America, of which he was the first foreign-born president. His work at Mycenae has been credited with bringing coherence to the previously scattered and sporadically published record of excavation at the site. At the same time, his belief that ancient Greek mythical traditions, particularly concerning the Trojan War and the Eleusinian Mysteries, could be verified by archaeological excavation was controversial in his day and has generally been discredited since. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 28 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see George E. In this episode Chris delivers Opinion Scholarship on the meaning of Plato's famous Cave Allegory. He shows through the words of Plato and the ancient Greek Poet Pindar that the secret goings-on of the Eleusinian Mysteries share a hell of a lot with the experience of the prisoner freed from Plato's cave. He then posits that the secrecy surrounding the Mysteries kept Plato from speaking about it directly, leading to the parables and allegories sprinkled throughout his dialogues. And to conclude, he samples accounts from the ancient world all the way through to the modern one of other people who had a mystical experience paralleling the one outlined by the Cave Allegory. We hear the same message from Plato to Plotinus and from Meister Eckhart to Alan Watts. From Jesus to Zoroaster and from Buddha to St. Paul. Enjoy ;)

The Amish Inquisition Podcast

This week Ryan Seven returns with some intriguing new research regarding Plato's story of Atlantis. What did the Old Master encode within his legendary narrative? Find Ryan here YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/BrotherBones1111   From the web: The original account of Atlantis comes from two of Plato's dialogues: “Timaeus” and “Critias”. These dialogues were written around 360 BCE. Plato crafted these dialogues as a festival speech to be delivered during the Panathenaea, in honour of the goddess Athena. In the dialogues, Socrates asks three men to share stories about ancient Athens and its interactions with other states. Critias, one of these men, recounts a tale passed down from his grandfather, who had met the Athenian poet and lawgiver Solon during his travels to Egypt. According to the Egyptians (as relayed by Solon), there once existed a mighty empire called Atlantis. It was situated on an island in the Atlantic Ocean and ruled over other islands and parts of Africa and Europe. The city of Atlantis was meticulously designed, with concentric rings of alternating water and land. It boasted rich soil, advanced engineering, extravagant architecture, and organised military and civil administration. Their rituals paralleled those of Athens, including bull-baiting, sacrifice, and prayer. However, Atlantis became imperialistic and waged an unprovoked war against the rest of Asia and Europe. In this conflict, the much smaller city-state of Athens stood as the sole defender against the invading Atlantean forces. Against all odds, Athens triumphed, defeating Atlantis and preventing enslavement. After the battle, violent earthquakes and floods struck, causing Atlantis to sink into the sea. All the Athenian warriors were swallowed up by the earth.   In Ancient Greece, psychedelic mushrooms played a significant role in religious and spiritual practices. The Eleusinian Mysteries were celebrated in honour of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. These mysteries were regarded as the most sacred of all the rituals in Ancient Greek religion. Ancient pottery and paintings depict Persephone and Demeter holding mushrooms. These depictions suggest that the use of psychedelic mushrooms was well-known during ancient Greek times. While the exact details of the Eleusinian Mysteries remain shrouded in secrecy, it is clear that psychedelics played a crucial role in these sacred rituals.   Plato, the renowned ancient Greek philosopher, was indeed initiated into the Greater Mysteries. This initiation occurred when he was 49 years old, and it took place in one of the subterranean halls of the Great Pyramid in Egypt.  Plato himself acknowledged the significance of these mysteries. In his famous dialogue on the immortality of the soul, the “Phaedo”, he stated: “Our mysteries had a very real meaning: he that has been purified and initiated shall dwell with the gods” . #atlantis #lostcivilisation #plato _______________________________ Follow us here: https://allmylinks.com/the-amish-inquisition Signup for the newsletter, join the community, follow us online, and most importantly share links!  Producer Credits for Ep 321: Danny G, Emma Bridges, Aliyah for keeping us caffeinated, this weeks artists Helen and Lee from the Big Conspire. _______________________________ Leave us a voicemail: 07562245894 Message us here....follow, like, subscribe and share. The book is a philosophical biography of the Roman emperor, which contains many references to the Meditations and how his philosophy shaped his life. You can help it reach a wider audience by pre-ordering now from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or any other bookseller. While the First Marcomannic War was raging, Marcus Aurelius, surrounded by death and betrayal, found consolation in writing his famous notes “to himself” on Stoic philosophy. He also made a solemn vow. If he survived long enough, he would go on pilgrimage to Athens and join the supplicants being initiated in the Temple of Demeter at nearby Eleusis. Hadrian had tried to bring the Eleusinian Mysteries to Rome, but their mystique was rooted in the Greek temple's ancient site.Stoicism: Philosophy as a Way of Life is a reader-supported publication. Anyone who wants to understand the author of Meditations should read this book.”—Robin Waterfield, author of Marcus Aurelius, Meditations: The Annotated Edition“Donald Robertson guides us into the world of a philosopher-emperor whose humility and Stoic teachings fill the pages. We are indebted to Robertson for this wonderful account of the emperor who penned notes to himself while in battle that would be later known as the Meditations and read by millions for philosophical inspiration. Simply spellbinding.”—Nancy Sherman, author of Stoic Wisdom: Ancient Lessons for Modern Resilience“This highly readable biography is the perfect place to begin for anyone who wants to learn more about the man behind the Meditations.”—John Sellars, author of The Pocket Stoic“Robertson's biography provides a compelling narrative of Marcus' life, carefully based on the primary sources. They talk about magickal elixirs, like those given to initiates of the Eleusinian Mysteries, and Circe's ‘love filters.' They consider magic mushrooms, mandrake, poppy flowers, LSD, and how these substances played a role in journeying, dreamwork, and divination. They talk about Isis, Hecate, Inanna, Demeter, Persephone, Asclepius, Maria Sabina, St. Nick, and reflect on the connection between ergot (a psychoactive fungus) and the Salem Witch Trials. We then dive into the mystery religion in the Greco-Roman period of Persephone and Demeter the Eleusinian Mysteries! Many people in the Greco-Roman period dedicated themselves to the goddesses and made pilgrimages to leave offerings. We go step by step (with what we have archaeology wise) on how people were initiated into this mystery religion. We then update at the end of the episode on one of our Boo and What Do! stories from the first one we ever did and how we were able to help someone with a rowdy house spirit. Chesterton I. William Carlos Williams attributes the title to his friend/rival Ezra Pound, mythological references' number one fanboy. Kora is a parallel figure to Persephone or Proserpina, the Spring captured and taken to Hades by Hades himself. Persephone as a plant goddess and her mother Demeter were the central figures of the Eleusinian Mysteries, which promised the initiated a groovy afterlife glimpsed at by psychedelic shrooms. And Kora means maiden. Ancient Greeks called her that either because she was like Voldemort, and you were apotropaically not supposed to say her true name because this is a Mystery Cult, damn it. Keeps some of the mystery. Or because she in a way represents all of the maidens, everywhere. So, in that sense, Kora in Hell alludes to the multitude of suffering young women Williams met while working as a doctor, assisting in 1917 style home labors, and, because WWI was going on at the time and doctors were extremely scarce, as a local police surgeon. Conditions were dire:
