Today on the Online for Authors podcast, special guest host Carol Pearson is flipping the script and interviewing me, Teri M Brown, author of the book 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure.   Carol Pearson is the founder of indie publishing house 10 Little Rules, creating books filled with personal narrative and guided journaling inspiration. The books are written by a growing community of authentic and inspiring authors who share their stories to empower others and share their wisdom. At 10LRs we believe in the unbreakable connection between all of us, and relish those "me too" moments that lead to insights and powerful change.   As an author of character-driven fiction, my goal is to introduce readers to characters they'd love to invite to lunch. I do this through my writing (Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, An Enemy Like Me, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, and 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure), through my book reviews on my blog (www.terimbrown.com/blog), and through my podcasting as host of this show.   In addition to telling a great story, I want those who read or hear my words to contemplate difficult aspects of life such as racism, xenophobia, fear of change, family dynamics, loss, and war. My TEDx talk relates my experiences with racism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxYidJsL_Wc), while my books always tackle hard topics.   In their book review, the Book Commentary stated that 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure by Teri M Brown is a wonderful exploration of personal growth, transformation, and the quest for adventure. The book is an inspiring guide wrapped around the author's journey of cycling across the United States on a tandem bike with her husband, Bruce. Through this adventure, Brown discovers new geographical locations and insights about herself, her relationships, and life at large. She shares those insights in this life-transforming book! The book's central message is about embracing life's challenges and uncertainties to foster personal growth and healing. Brown emphasizes that everyone can achieve extraordinary feats, regardless of age or circumstances, if they break it into manageable segments and stay focused. Her tale is not just about the physical act of cycling but signifies a mental and emotional metamorphosis that empowers her to redefine her potential.    Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Guest-Host Carol Pearson Website: https://10littlerules.com/ FB:@10 Little Rules IG: @10littlerules LinkedIn: @10 Little Rules   Purchase 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure on Amazon: https://10littlerules.com/   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #terimbrown.com #10littlerules #doublebuttedadventure #memoir #inspirational #selfhelp #guidedjournaling #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Phantom Electric Ghost With Teri M Brown: Author of Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, An Enemy Like Me On being an author Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. She now calls the North Carolina coast home, and the peaceful nature of the sea has been a great source of inspiration for her creativity. Not letting 2020 get the best of her, Teri chose to go on an adventure that changed her outlook on life. She and her husband, Bruce, rode a tandem bicycle across the United States from Astoria, Oregon to Washington DC, successfully raising money for Toys for Tots. She learned she is stronger than she realized and capable of anything she sets her mind to. Teri graduated from UNC Greensboro with a multitude of degrees – majors in Elementary Education and Psychology and minors in Math and Sociology – she just couldn't settle on one thing! While homeschooling her four children, she began her writing career by focusing on small businesses, writing articles, blog posts, and website content. During this time, Teri published five nonfiction self-help books dealing with real estate and finance, receiving "First Runner Up" in the Eric Hoffman Book Awards for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, finalist in the USA Best Books Awards for How To Open and Operate a Financially Successful Redesign, Redecorate, and Real Estate Staging Business and for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, and Honorable Mention in Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award for Private Mortgage Investing. In 2017, after finally getting out of an emotionally abusive 14-year marriage, Teri began dabbling in fiction, a lifelong dream. Upon winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story for a piece about her grandfather, she began writing in earnest, and published her debut novel in 2022, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, a historical fiction set in Ukraine. Her second novel published in 2023, An Enemy Like Me, takes place during WWII. Her latest novel, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, a generational story about Appalachian healers came out in January 2024. In June 2024, her short story, The Youngest Lighthouse Keeper, came out in the anthology Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women. Her latest book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, is an inspirational look at the life lessons she learned riding across the United States on a tandem bicycle and will be published in February 2025. Teri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and author who loves word games, reading, bumming on the beach, taking photos, singing in the shower, hunting for bargains, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, and mentoring others – especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth. Teri M Brown wanted to be a writer when she was just four years old. However, she laughs and says she also wanted to be a brain surgeon and an Olympic Ice Skater. Nevertheless, the desire to write never fully left her. She began her writing careerhelping small businesses with their written content and even wrote several nonfiction self-help books dealing with real estate and finance along the way. But it wasn't until she got out of a long-term emotionally abusive marriage that she finally began to dabble in fiction. After winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story in 2017 for a piece about her grandfather, she began writing in earnest.Although she had several completed manuscripts,Teri still didn't believe in herself. That all changed after an epic adventure. She met Bruce, the man she would marry in 2019, and the two of them rode across the United States from the coast of Oregon to Washington, DC on a tandem bicycle. At the end of those 3,102 miles (4,992 km), Teri was a different person. She realized that she could achieve anything if she set her mind to it. So, she got her manuscript, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, into the hands of Atmosphere Press, and her debut novel about three generations of Ukrainian women launched in January 2022, just three weeks before the current Ukrainian crisis.Since then, she hasn't looked back.Teri's second novel, An Enemy Like Me, launches on January 24, 2023. An Enemy Like Me is a WWII historical fiction that focuses on a first-generation German-American who becomes an American soldier. However, instead of fighting the Japanese as he expected, he finds himself fighting Germans –those more like him than different from him. Readerssee how he handles this angst from his own viewpoint, his wife's point of view, and that of his son (both as a 4-year-old left behind and as an adult reflecting on the past).

When you're a woman brought up in Christian, and especially Catholic values, you're exposed to two polar archetypes. One, is represented by the Virgin Mary while the other is epitomized by Mary Magdalene, who is vilified by Catholic tradition as a harlot and sinner. So as a woman, the patriarchy forces you to make a hard choice: either be a total Virgin/Mother Mary or be a totally bad girl. Dr. Joanna Kujawa, a spiritual detective, knew early on that there's something wrong with this narrative. In her book, The Other Goddess, she explores what Mary Magdalene teaches us about sexuality and uncovers the other Goddess archetypes that have been hidden from women for so long. In this conversation with Dom Brightmon, she unpacks some of the concepts she talks about in the book, as well as some interesting and radical views on the intersection of identity, sexuality, and spirituality. She also talks about feminine consciousness, how the world has relegated it to the sidelines, and what benefits we can get by exploring it more. Sunflowers Beneath the Snow  Teri Brown pt 1 http://www.terimbrown.com/ ()We all love a good fiction story every now and then. We love one that has just enough truth included to make it plausible, but yet keep us entertained and wondering, “What happens next.” When I can interview an author who has also included some elements of Faith in the story, too… Well, I can't resist. Amen! Teri is the author of https://amzn.to/3tv1wP6 (“Sunflowers Beneath the Snow”) a historical fiction that is set in the Ukraine. Little did she know that the inspiration for the writing and publishing of her book was part of God's plan to have it published right now, in light of what we see happening in the Ukraine. Amen! https://amzn.to/3tv1wP6 (“Sunflowers Beneath the Snow”) covers three generations of women struggling to survive after the betrayal of one Ukrainian rebel. The rebel was the husband and father and three women, the wife / mother, daughter and eventually the granddaughter. I don't want to give away the plot as that will be part of our discussion today… This is part three and the conclusion of our great interview, with Teri Brown! What kind of preparatory training did you do in order to get ready for the physical challenges you were about to face on your cross-country bike ride, from Oregon to Washington, DC? Since you completed the trip, we know you were successful. But how were the Rocky Mountains on a bicycle? I know when I drove them in a car, it taxed the car a few times! How long did the entire trip take? You took the northern trip across to and then down Michigan. How was the Mackinaw Bridge and Mackinaw Island? I'm from Port Huron, Michigan so I was reading those blogs on your website. What is your next challenge? Both on the bicycle and in writing? Teri, this all so interesting. How can someone order a copy of your book? Is it on Amazon? If someone wanted to ask a question or get more information, or possible do an interview such as this, how can they do that? How can someone get in touch with you? If someone wanted to follow your blog, how can they do that? Folks, I cannot emphasize enough how historically accurate and how timely the release of this book, https://amzn.to/3tv1wP6 (“Sunflowers Beneath the Snow”) is and how timely the release of this book is, for the day and time in which we live today. This book will give some background about Ukraine at a key, pivotal point in its history, just when people best need to understand these past events in order to absorb the present-day challenges their nation faces today. How did you do all of the research on the language, the customs, the food, etc. in preparation for writing this book? Did you ever have writers block and what do you do counter it? When you go on a retreat, do you seclude yourself and not come out until you are finished? On this retreat you are going on, do you have a book in mind or do you just go up there and see what comes out in book form? https://amzn.to/3tv1wP6 (“Sunflowers Beneath the Snow”) was published, I would say, in a “Godly time frame,” as it relates to everything we see happening right now in the real world. Teri M Brown always wanted to be a writer, but it wasn't until the year 2000 that she started writing non-fiction for small businesses, and it took until 2017 for Teri to leave an unhappy marriage, turn 50 and fulfill her dream of writing a novel. The most important aspect of writing that first novel was finding the confidence to believe she was capable of it. Non-fiction, she says, is something practical and unemotional. But fiction comes from somewhere inside, and that takes a lot more courage. If someone doesn't like your book, it's like they're saying they don't like you and we talk about how to handle that rejection and not take it personally.A big turning point for Teri was when she attended a writing retreat because not only did she have the time and space to write, but the community was so supportive and, as she says, ”you feed off each other.”The inspiration behind her debut novel.Sunflowers Beneath The Snow was a young Ukrainian student who joined Camp America back in 2014.When it was time for her to return to the Ukraine, war had broken out and she couldn't get back to her home country.Nor could she remain in America because she didn't have a greencard. She was told she'd be taken to a refugee camp in Poland but she didn't want to do that because it wasn't her home, she didn't speak Polish and she didn't know anybody there. Instead, she disappeared! She later obtained the legal right to remain and two years later she got back in touch with Teri. She told Teri a story about what had happened to her in New York, and it was that story that planted the seed for Sunflowers Beneath The Snow.I was desperate to know what the story was, but the whole novel leads up to that one moment, and Teri, understandably, didn't want to spoil the ending! We go on to talk about the research involved in writing about a country and culture you know nothing about. Sunflowers Beneath The Snow is a historical novel so Teri started with a broad overview of Ukraine's history before narrowing down her research to the year about which she was writing.By researching only what she needed, it meant she could weave fact into fiction in an organic way, and it didn't feel forced.Even though she first had the idea for the story in 2016, the book wasn't published until 2021 and Teri M Brown takes me through her writing process and how she subsequently found her publisher, Atmosphere Press. We finish our conversation with Teri telling me about her new novel, which is set in World War Two. It's loosely based on her grandfather's experiences fighting in Germany and is particularly poignant because her Grandfather is of German heritage and the book raises the question of what if my enemy is also my family?A tear jerker in the making! What will you get from this episode? You'll learn a little bit about Ukrainian history. You'll see it takes time to write a book you actually want to publish, and you'll also learn that you have publishing options. The important thing is to enter a contract knowing what your rights are.  LInks:Sunflowers Beneath The Snow, Teri M BrownTeBook Editing Blueprint A Step-By-Step Plan To Making Your Novels Publishable Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Teri M. Brown's novel Sunflowers Beneath the Snow (Atmosphere Press 2022) opens in 1973 with a Ukrainian man being spirited out of the USSR. He's part of the resistance and his cover was blown. Ivanna, his wife is told that he died in another woman's bed, and she never wants to hear his name again. Loyal to the Soviet Union, Ivanna manages to raise her daughter Yevtsye, who grows up, falls in love, gets married, and gives birth to a daughter, Ionna. Then Gorbachev comes to power and the Soviet Union collapses, leaving Ivanna in shock but offering hope to Yevtsye, Danya, and their daughter. The years pass, and Ionna wants to learn languages and see the world. She takes a job at an American summer camp and slowly overcomes the prejudices of the rest of the staff. Then the Soviet army invades Crimea, and she can't get home, so she heads to New York City in hopes of blending into the large Ukrainian population. This is a story of resilience and courage. G.P. Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.   My guest today is Teri M Brown, a business content writer and author who was born in Greece but now  lives in North Carolina. Teri has been writing since childhood and turned her hobby into a career, but the stories inside her have always wanted to be told, and she is now just about to publish her first novel, “Sunflowers Beneath the Snow”.  During our conversation we talk about why authors need thick skins, dreaming big and book marketing, and Teri explains how her writing process is ‘story first, detail later'.  More About Teri M Brown Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell.
