The unofficial third host of The Carpool Podcast is BACK! Kate from Naptime Kitchen joins Kelly and Lizz today to talk about something that is right up their alley - "Take Them a Meal March." Kate is encouraging people throughout the month to show someone you love them through food. Whether it's a top tier meal or a cup of coffee and a muffin, she'll share how a simple gesture can go a long way to help a family member, friend or neighbor. This is a great way to show someone you see them and you care.  But it's not all about the food this episode, although there is a lot of food talk. Kelly kicks it off with a big reveal of her modeling past! Why did she give it up? Before they leave, they also get the big scoop on Kate's new car.  Today's episode is brought to you by Clean Simple Eats. Use code 'Carpool10' at checkout to get 10% off your order. What's a common feature of a doctor's life? The DEADLINE AVALANCHE One deadline... Piece of cake Two deadlines... No problem  Three deadlines... Okay we can do this  Four deadlines... IT'S ONLY TUESDAY    Time management 101 isn't enough to save us in this situation of competing demands and conflicting priorities    The deadline avalanche can be managed by SURVIVING. This looks like staying up late to get everything done, forgoing things you'd rather keep, and even sacrificing things you said you wouldn't.    Becc can't forget missing a wedding of a loved one when she was in med school. At the time, it seemed necessary to meet the demands of these deadlines.    On the other hand, the option is not always obvious as a possibility... is THRIVING in the deadline avalanche. What this requires is DIVERTING resources away    It's true, we can't do it all.  But it's okay, because we CAN do what's important.    So here's the catch - and the strategy. To free up our resources for what's important, we need TAKE THEM from somewhere else.    And we can hear some of you… PERMISSION TO DO LESS? I'm IN.    And then some of you like… PERMISSION TO DO LESS? … But … It won't be good enough    THOUGHT: It won't meet the mark unless I give all of my effort   Becc used to have this same thought process. And it meant that she could never give herself permission to give less than 100% effort to any of these competing deadlines. It was too much of a risk.    The problem with this is, she also never tried less than 100% to see if it would suffice.    Evidence base for success giving LESS THAN 100% effort: nil  Evidence base for success giving 100% effort: robust    When we say 'There's no evidence for that' in medicine, we want to be clear if we're trying to communciate:    "There's experiments that don't show evidence for that to be true" OR "There's no experiments that investigate that question"   And here's what we have to offer on this:    The belief that is POSSIBLE that less than 100% effort needs to be strong enough for you to choose to do the experiment. If you don't believe it's possible, why try, right?   So, here's an invitation from our shared experience:    It's possible that you can GIVE LESS EFFORT to some of these deadlines WITHOUT LOSING ANYTHING.    With that extra effort diverted to the deadlines that are IMPORTANT, it's possible you can GAIN A LOT.   The key here is first getting clear on what's important before your mind gets carried away with what's urgent.    When you are clear about what's IMPORTANT, you'll have the fuel for the bravery required to divert resources away from its competition.    Sometimes good enough is good enough.    What do you think? --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/amidoingitwrong/message

In this episode featuring Nima Negahban, CEO of Kinetica, the potential impact of generative AI tools like ChatGPT on businesses and organizations is discussed. Negahban highlights the transformative potential of generative AI when combined with data analytics. One use case he mentions is an "Alexa for all your data," where real-time queries can be made about store performance or product underperformance in specific weather conditions. This could provide organizations with a new level of visibility into their operations.Negahban identifies two major challenges in the generative AI space. The first is security, especially when using internal data to train AI models. The second challenge is ensuring accuracy in AI outputs to avoid misleading information. However, he emphasizes that generative AI tools, such as GitHub Copilot, can bring a new expectation of efficiency and innovation for developers. The future of generative AI in the enterprise involves discovering how to orchestrate these models effectively and leverage them with organizational data. Negahban mentions the growing interest in vector search and vector database capabilities to generate embeddings and perform embedding search. Kinetica's processing engine, coupled with OpenAI technology, aims to enable ad hoc querying against natural language without extensive data preparation, indexing, or engineering.Check out the episode to hear more about how the integration of generative AI and data analytics presents exciting opportunities for businesses and organizations, providing them with powerful insights and potential for creativity and innovation.Read more about Generative AI on The New StackIs Generative AI Augmenting Our Jobs, or About to Take Them?Generative AI: How to Choose the Optimal DatabaseHow Will Generative AI Change the Tech Job Market?Generative AI: How Companies Are Using and Scaling AI Models

Rabbi Steve Leder is no stranger to grief. As a rabbi, he has consoled hundreds of families over the years during their most difficult times. In his new book, The Beauty of What Remains, he walks us through his experience of losing his father. He takes us on the journey of self-discovery of how he learned to balance the conflicting emotions of losing someone who wasn't always easy to love but was still an important figure in his life.  In his book, he discusses how making peace with the fact that these feelings cannot be resolved is a resolution. Once you can make peace with the fact that you cannot change what happened in the past, you make space for the positive memories to emerge. Finding meaning in those memories is what helps you get back to living.  Caregivers often struggle with how they should show up for their loved ones, especially as they get closer to death. Rabbi Leder has some tips to help caregivers navigate one of the hardest roles in the world.  Ways to Overcome Fear As a Caregiver Tip #1 Never Underestimate the Power of Touch The power of communicating through touch, especially with a loved one who is suffering from an illness like dementia, is remarkable. Just sitting with your loved one and holding their hand can help both of you communicate when words are no longer an option. (Rabbi Leder acknowledges that this may not be possible during the pandemic.) Tip #2 Create an Ethical Will  We write our eulogies while we are alive. It's how we live that writes our story. By creating an ethical will, you leave behind a document that talks about your love, hopes, and dreams for the people you leave behind. It's important to do this during the early stages of illness, if possible.  Tip #3 Take Them on a Mental Vacation Create a transcendent vacation that encourages them to think about happier times. Sit by their bed and ask questions like:  Who was your very first kiss?  What was the greatest vacation you ever took?  What was it like when you laid your eyes on your spouse for the first time? By taking people out of their physical being and into the metaphysical, both of you can experience joy without even leaving the room. It can be the best moment they have had in a long time.  Tip #4 Just Show Up Walkthrough the door as your authentic self. They want you to be who you are — not someone who is clearly holding back given the situation. For example: If you're a hugger, hug them. If you're a feeder, feed them. If you're a jokester, tell them jokes. If you are your authentic self when you walk in, then the rest of everything will unfold the way it should.  Tip #5 Take It One Step at a Time  Grief is a long road. Just take the next step forward. Take a shower. Go for a walk. Show yourself some compassion as you would others. Grief doesn't happen in a straight line and oftentimes we grieve even before our loved one has passed. Show yourself empathy through this process.  How the Pandemic Has Created Meaningful Intimacy Through Grief This global pandemic has caused us to take a global pause and reassess what we value most. A busy life and a meaningful life are not the same. This pandemic has taught us to appreciate and value each other more than ever before. Funeral services have changed in both good and bad ways. The good thing is now only the person's innermost circle is there to grieve together and tell stories with each other. It creates an intimacy that pre-pandemic funerals did not have. The bad thing is that families do miss out on condolences from their extended family and friends, food provided by people who care about them, and hugs and other personal touch that are so important to the human spirit. But we will get through this together.  Rabbi Leder's book The Beauty of What Remains is now available on Amazon.  This episode is brought to you by the Awaken: Meditation for Grief Program, which helps you cope with the heartache and pain of loss with meditation-based practices for your mind, body, and spirit.

One of our biggest challenges as parents is to help our children explore their boundaries so that they can learn to calculate and manage risk for themselves.   “The more risks you allow your children to make, the better they learn to look after themselves.”  - Roald Dahl   Over the past 10-20 years, we've seen an epidemic, especially in the United States, of parents trying too hard to keep their children safe and protected by telling them what to do, what to trust, and what to fear, instead of helping them to cultivate their own abilities to judge and manage risk and to develop their own trust in themselves. In this episode, we challenge you to allow your young children the freedom to take a few more supervised risks and to give them your support as they challenge their own abilities.  Through creating more opportunities for children to learn and grow, we are helping them to cultivate valuable life-skills that are necessary for a successful future.    Resources From This Episode: Risky Play: Why Children Love It and Need It by Peter Gray 4/7/2014, Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/freedom-learn/201404/risky-play-why-children-love-it-and-need-it Reasonable Risk Taking: Why Your Children Need to Take Them, by Timber Nook 7/28/15: http://www.balancedandbarefoot.com/blog/how-reasonable-risk-taking-benefits-kids Tim Gill, Rethinking Childhood: https://rethinkingchildhood.com/  The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn Iggulden and Hal Iggulden The Daring Book for Girls by Andrea J. Do you take selfies? Do you take them in public? Do you watch other people take selfies in public and judge them harshly, as if it is any of your business? Or, uh, why does anyone have an opinion on the selfie behaviors of others? I don’t take them; Ashley does. Who cares? This is our question on Why’d You Push That Button this week — with a long detour to defend Kim Kardashian, the tryingest social media pioneer and performance artist of our time — and we’re going to get to the bottom of it. We spoke to Alicia Eler, author of the brand-new book The Selfie Generation, and she broke down the subtle misogyny of maligning young women for making their own records of their lives. We discussed the Super Bowl “selfie kid” and those very annoying sports announcers from 2015. Then we chatted with Racked executive editor Julia Rubin, who does not allow anyone to take photos of her at any time — never mind taking them of herself. Selfies are embarrassing, she says! As a fashion editor, Julia has had other jobs that required her to maintain a meticulous and glamorous Instagram, and that’s just not the life she wants to live anymore. Finally, we spoke to Dr. Sarah Diefenbach, a professor of market and consumer psychology at the University of Munich. Earlier this year, she co-published a paper called “The Selfie Paradox: Nobody Seems to Like Them Yet Everyone Has Reasons to Take Them.” There’s a lot of gold in there, but we were fascinated by her finding that people who take selfies are likely to justify it to themselves as a “situational” decision — e.g. “I’m at the opening of Jake Gyllenhaal’s first Broadway musical, I need a photo of me having this incredible experience, even though I don’t normally take selfies,” or “I’m having a special, unique drunk night with a dear friend and I look good and I need to document it just this once.” When they see other people take selfies, they assume the reason behind it is that the person is a selfie-taker, by nature. This is called the fundamental attribution error, and I vaguely recall learning about it in one of the many “communication” classes I slept or read Jezebel through in college. DJ Matt Werner’s interview with hip hop artist Ise Lyfe originally aired on Fresh Air: The Alternative on March 3, 2009. Ise Lyfe wrote and performed in the best play I saw in 2008, a one-man play entitled "Who's Krazy." Having followed Ise's early work in Youth Speaks since he was a teenager, I was excited to interview this author, educator, hip hop artist, actor, and community organizer from East Oakland, California. In the hour-long radio broadcast, Ise Lyfe talks about the commodification of poverty related to the exploitation of black culture in the U.S., the BART police shooting of Oscar Grant, his latest album Prince Cometh, his forthcoming book Pistols and Prayers and forthcoming mixtape Take Them to School, the fears of Obama's assassination held by people in East Oakland during the 2008 presidential campaign, and how Obama's election is not the end of racial struggle in the U.S. The show also features a dispatch from Joe Sciarrillo on the New Year's shooting of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer in Oakland, California, and the subsequent protests. Amanda Mohammed speaks at the end of the show about her March 13, 2009 event in Berkeley, California raising awareness on the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
