World Building for Masochists

We throw the word "aesthetic" around a lot on this podcast -- but we've never really slowed down to talk about what it means. How do we define the aesthetic of a work? Is that different from the aesthetic of a world? How do subgenres and plot structures intertwine with those ideas? Guest Mary Robinette Kowal joins us to explore the crafting of aesthetics in worldbuilding and storymaking! We discuss pacing, word choice, set dressing, the theatre of the mind, the "breath" of the written word, and so much more. We also examine how aesthetic can be a shorthand to help your reader with an on-ramp into your story -- but how you may also need to teach your reader where your particular world deviates from what aesthetic may lead them to assume. Transcript for Episode 88 (in-progress -- email us if you're interested in joining the scribal team!) Our Guest: Nebula and Hugo Award-winning author, Mary Robinette Kowal is a novelist and professional puppeteer. In 2008 she won the Astounding Award for Best New Writer and her debut novel Shades of Milk and Honey (Tor 2010) was nominated for the 2010 Nebula Award for Best Novel. In 2019, the first book in the Lady Astronaut series The Calculating Stars (Tor 2018), won the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards, becoming one of only eighteen novels to do so. Her stories have appeared in Strange Horizons, Asimov's, and several Year's Best anthologies, as well as in her collection Scenting the Dark and Other Stories from Subterranean Press. Her short story collection Word Puppets was published in 2015, and includes both of her Hugo Award-winning stories in addition to fifteen others, running the full range of speculative fiction. In 2016, her World War I fantasy novel Ghost Talkers was published by Tor books, followed in 2018 by her alternate history Lady Astronaut series. From 2019-2021, Kowal was the President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. In 2011, after several appearances as a guest star on the podcast Writing Excuses, Kowal became a permanent member of the cast. In 2013, the seventh season of the podcast won the Hugo Award for Best Related Work. Her involvement in the podcast also contributed to the creation of the Shadows Beneath anthology, in which Kowal and her three co-hosts contributed short stories alongside materials charting the unique creative process of each author. Kowal is also an award-winning puppeteer. In high school, she took up puppetry as a hobby, but as Kowal says, she “never thought of it as something you could get paid for.” Instead, she went to East Carolina University to pursue an art degree, minoring in theater and speech. While performing as Audrey II in a performance of Little Shop of Horrors, she learned that a professional puppeteer had come to the show. It was a turning point. Kowal went on to intern at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, GA. With over twenty years of experience, she has performed for LazyTown (CBS), the Center for Puppetry Arts, Jim Henson Pictures, Sesame Street, and founded Other Hand Productions. Her designs have garnered two UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence, the highest award an American puppeteer can achieve. Her career in puppetry consumed much of Kowal's creative energy for over ten years. Although she wrote in high school and college, it wasn't until her brother moved his family to China that she began writing again. Like Lewis Carroll and J.M. Barrie, she started creating children's fantasy as a way to stay connected to her young niece and nephew. Reminded of how much she enjoyed writing, she began submitting short stories and made her first sale in 2005, and her first professional sale to Strange Horizons in 2006. When she isn't writing or puppeteering, Kowal brings her speech and theater background to her work as a voice actor. She is a member of SAG/AFTRA. She has recorded audio books and short stories for authors such as Seanan McGuire, Cory Doctorow and John Scalzi. She likes to describe voice acting as “puppetry, without the pain.” Mary Robinette lives in Nashville with her husband Rob and over a dozen manual typewriters. Sometimes she even writes on them.

Your Hosts: Dan Wells, Mary Robinette Kowal, Peng Shepherd, and Howard Tayler Guest host Peng Shepherd leads our discussion of "order-less reading order" (after we get past the business of "having too much fun with the episode title"). But what do we even mean by "order-less" or "disordered?" At one level, we mean you can just pick up the story anywhere and start reading. Kind of like TV series prior to the advent of the fully serial series. But kind of unlike it, because how does this work within just one book? Liner Notes: For good examples of non-order-dependent stories, consider schlockmercenary.com, The Lady Astronaut universe, DISCWORLD, Seventy Maxims (annotated), Credits: This episode was recorded by Marshall Carr, Jr., and mastered by Alex Jackson

The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space, and requires a much larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York's experience as a WASP pilot and mathematician earns her a place in the International Aerospace Coalition's attempts to put man on the moon, as a calculator. But with so many skilled and experienced women pilots and scientists involved with the program, it doesn't take long before Elma begins to wonder why they can't go into space, too. Elma's drive to become the first Lady Astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her." Living in a male-dominated society means you'll likely work in a male-dominated field. That was the situation I was in at NASA, before the first women flew to space. Naturally, many of the decisions concerning what astronauts needed in space were made based on men. This made for an exciting story regarding what men thought were the basic needs of a woman in space. In this episode, I share the story of how NASA initially made the lady astronaut's toiletries kit. I describe what women would need in space and what the men back then thought women needed. I also discuss the day when Sally and I made our toiletries kit inspection, why it made our eyes roll, and how they could have done better. We are beyond excited to introduce you to this week's guest, Mary Robinette Kowal, author of the exact specific kind of book to make us all cry with sheer excellence, and in possession of the exact specific words to say to us that make us cry all over again. This week, Mary Robinette was kind enough to take time out of her crazy #MaryGoRound of travels (and check out her social media feeds for more on THAT hashtag) and fit us in for a quick and delightful chat about writing from and to history, making room for diverse characters——characters of color, LGBTQIA+ characters, neurodivergent characters——without reducing representation to a plot point. Mary Robinette's books include the Lady Astronaut series (currently "The Calculating Stars" and "The Fated Sky," with more to come), standalones such as "Ghost Talkers" and "Forest of Memory," and the Glamourist Histories series. She is also the author of numerous short stories, and her award-winning words are available wherever good books are sold. Esport er i de senere år både blevet mainstream-populært og samtidig hyper-professionelt. Der bliver spillet tonsvis af turneringer med millioner af dollars i præmiepenge og millioner af tilskuere fra hele verden. Men samtidig slås esporten og dens udøvere stadig med at blive accepteret - og med den evindelige diskussion om hvorvidt esport er sport… I denne episode taler vi med esportens fortalere, besøger en professionel esports-organisation og skal høre om hvordan HK forholder sig til professionelt computerspil. This week, we're doing something a little bit different - we're diving into the wide world of the written word, thanks to my recent trip to this year's Chicago Comics & Entertainment Expo! In addition to our other coverage, I was given the splendid opportunity to speak to Hugo-winning author Mary Robinette Kowal, author of the Lady Astronaut novels (the second of which, The Calculating Stars, was just nominated for a Hugo). The tale of an alternate history in which an asteroid hits the Eastern Seaboard and women have taken charge of the space program, the Lady Astronaut series is a refreshingly feminist take on the space race of the 1960s. In addition to her work as an acclaimed science-fiction author, Kowal has spent decades as a professional audiobook narrator and puppeteer, putting the latter skills to use on the cult puppet show LazyTown. I met up with Kowal at C2E2 to have a brief but insightful chat about her books, the importance of addressing the erasure of women's contributions to the space program, and her experiences on LazyTown. Take a listen! (You can find Mary Robinette's official website here, as well as her Patreon here. Buy The Fated Sky and The Calculating Stars here.) Holmberg, and Lola. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, or Stitcher.   Questions 1. I teach 9th grade Honors English in Texas and am looking for a title to add to my novel unit for the spring semester. I currently have my classes choose between The Book Thief, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and Ender’s Game. Ultimately I would like to find a book that hits a different level of interest for 15-16 year-olds, and can provide insight into a social issues research project that will close our unit. Preferably a book that is relatively similar in length to the other titles. Love your podcast and thanks in advance for your input, Melissa   2. I am looking for fiction for my wife, who is a huge fan of heist movies, soap opera-levels of drama, and sexually liberated female protagonists. She doesn’t read fiction for the most part, but her favorite media include Ocean’s 8, Ms. Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, and the Netflix show Cable Girls. Her academic specialization is refugee studies and the Middle East, so if there are any recommendations that take feature either, that would be fantastic. Thank you for your assistance in my overly narrow search. -Alex   3. A few years ago, I bought a copy of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, brought it home, and placed it on the bookshelf in my bedroom. Much to my surprise, when I was trying to go to sleep that night, I realized it glows. (By the way, this book made it off my TBR list in record time because the glowing cover made it really difficult to ignore!) Maybe a year later, I came across Radioactive by Lauren Redniss, which is a visual biography of Marie and Pierre Curie. This book also glows. Ever since then, I have been on the lookout for more books that glow, but have been unsuccessful. I had high hopes for The Radium Girls by Kate Moore, but much to my disappointment, it does not. Do you know of any books that fit the bill?  I know this may be difficult, so in lieu of a luminescent read, I would also accept a book in which the reading experience goes beyond just words on the page. I’m thinking something along the lines of the “Miss Peregrine” series by Ransom Riggs which was inspired by old photographs and includes those photographs in the print edition. Another example is Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan which encompasses multiple stories, including a fairytale. The fairytale pages are formatted differently than the rest of the book, music is woven throughout the book, and actual harmonica music is included at the beginning of each section. House of Leaves seems like it would work, but I’m a total scaredy cat and horror books are just not my thing. I like most genres (except horror), but tend to gravitate towards fantasy, historical fiction, and science nonfiction.  Thanks for your help! -Jessica   4. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I travel from NC to TN at least once a month and it’s eight hours both ways. I usually download an audiobook that’s either 8 hrs or a little more or 16 hrs so I can read one or two going to and from. I download from my Libby app to dull the boredom and lately, I’ve been listening to what seems like the same book over and over again. I recently listened to The Other Woman by Sandie Jones followed by The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (I know I was late to that one). I’m just really not digging this rut of sad female English main characters in abusive relationships because it makes for a depressing drive! I think Amanda was the one who said she only listens to nonfiction on audio, and I’m okay with that (recently also listened to Hidden Figures & I’ll Be Gone In The Dark on audio as well) but it would have to be super engaging. Basically I just want a fun audiobook that has the potential to make me laugh out loud. Other audiobooks included YA reads like The Hate U Give; The Fault in Our Stars; Will Grayson, Will Grayson; The Cruel Prince. DNFed Fates and Furies because I’m weird about audiobook narrator voices. I’m interested in some fantasy/sci-fi if possible. My latest pick for this weekend is Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. I’ll take Audible reads but will be sad because I’m a poor library science grad student. -Tori   5. Hi! I’m trying to find some books for my 8 year old who reads at a 5th grade level. Most books in her age range bore her and trying to find more advanced books is tricky as she IS 8 so sometimes the subject matter can get a bit dicey. She really loves fantasy (HUGE Harry Potter fan!). She has specifically asked for books that are really thick and will take her awhile to read. Series books are a plus as she loves to really immerse herself in these characters and worlds. Thanks for your help! -Starla   6. Hi! I’m looking for read-a-likes of some favorite books but by authors of color. I don’t have a specific genre in mind that I’m requesting, so here’s a list of some favorites to give a sense of what I like, and you can choose your own adventure: Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye, The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier, the Lady Astronaut series by Mary Robinette Kowal, and the Murderbot series by Martha Wells. -Lindsey   7. Hi, I’m sure you’ve gotten questions about mermaid books before, but I’m hoping specifically for recommendations that are not YA but more literary with mermaid themes. I’ve loved books like Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock, or Alice Hoffman’s The Museum of Extraordinary Things. I’m a huge fan of Hoffman’s writing style even though (spoiler alert!) there was no real mermaid in the novel. I don’t necessarily need a romance element to enjoy the story, but it seems like all that’s out there is teen romance YA which is just not quite what I’m craving. If you have any recommendations at all for a richer, possibly mysterious read, I’d love to hear about it!! Thank you so much -Emily   Books Discussed The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas The Disturbed Girl’s Dictionary by NoNieqa Ramos One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid S by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff Bad Blood by John Carreyrou Dread Nation by Justina Ireland Seraphina by Rachel Hartman Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor Zero Sum Game by S.L Huang The Black God’s Drums by P. They’re set in an alternate timeline where the Space Race we know happened quite a bit differently, and at the center is the world-famous Lady Astronaut, Elma York. We seriously can’t recommend these books highly enough. Listen in to find out why, and then stick around for a list of other books we really enjoyed!
