In every deep relationship, there comes a point where we are asked to give up something of ourselves or change in ways we never anticipated. Who will this make me? What will this love cost? Tembi Locke fell in love with an Italian chef named Saro when she was studying abroad in Italy during college. Their romance was a story for the big screen. (Quite literally. One starring Zoe Saldana.) A rare illness upended it all. Tembi spent ten years as Saro's caregiver before he died. In her grief, Tembi took their young daughter back to Sicily to see what of her husband she could find there—in his culture, in his food, and with his family. In this conversation, Kate and Tembi discuss: becoming the architect of your life the effects of long-term caregiving (both the beauty and the cost) who grief makes us If you liked this episode, you'll also love: Katherine and Jay Wolf on what caregiving costs us Thomas Lynch on how we become who we miss John Swinton on living at the speed of love Watch clips from this conversation, read the full transcript, and access discussion questions by clicking here or visiting katebowler.com/podcasts. Back on December 1, 2019, Diverse Voices Book Review host Hopeton Hay interviewed actor Tembi Locke who had just published her memoir, FROM SCRATCH:A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home. The daughter of Black student activists in Houston, Locke penned a courageous story of love, family, and healing through the story of the romance between her and her Sicilian husband Saro, and his untimely death. In our interview we discussed how she met her husband while in Italy on a semester abroad from college, his family's opposition to their marriage, and how her Sicilian mother-in-law's love after Saro's death helped her heal. FROM SCRATCH became a New York Times best seller and a limited Netflix series. The series, “From Scratch,” became an instant global hit, spending weeks on Netflix's Top Ten List in over thirty countries around the world and earning six NAACP Image Award nominations. When Tembi Locke spent a college semester in Italy, it changed the course of her life. Meeting Saro, the man she would love and marry, filled her with joy and also challenged them both to bridge the gap between his Sicilian farm family and her Houston Texas family of civil rights activists. Over time their persistence and courage began to connect their two families. But no struggle before it could have prepared them for Saro's ten years living with cancer, his death, and Tembi's grief. Who could have predicted that Tembi would find her way forward in grief at the table of her mother-in-law, in her small home in Siciliy. Join us to talk about the road Tembi took to find her future.

So excited to share my rich and nuanced convo with Attica and Tembi Locke. I discovered this dynamic sister duo after devouring their Netflix limited series, FROM SCRATCH, starring Zoe Saldana. In case you don't know, she is the author of five books; her latest novel, Heaven, My Home, is the sequel to her Edgar Award-Winning Bluebird, Bluebird, and it is also a New York Times Bestseller. Attica is also a screenwriter and TV producer, with credits including Empire, When They See Us, and Little Fires Everywhere, for which she won an NAACP Image Award for screenwriting. She also happens to be my sister. Together, we co-created and adapted From Scratch, but it was her role as showrunner and as sister that made our whole series happen. This week's episode is a story of love and how love can change your life. It's a story about marriage, family, health and grief but at its core is love. Love at all costs. Tembi Locke is an actress and an author and now the co-writer and executive producer behind the new Netflix's series, ‘From Scratch', based on Tembi's beautiful and heartbreaking life story which she wrote about in her New York Times best-selling memoir. ‘From Scratch' has been adapted and produced by Reece Witherspoon and stars Zoe Salanda. As an actress Tembi has appeared in TV shows, comedies and films including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Beverly Hills and 90210. But it's her improbable and extraordinary story which has captured attention; meeting and marrying her Sicilian husband Saro, winning over his estranged family who rejected his life choices, including Tembi as a black American, and ultimately caring for Saro as he died. Tembi writes so beautifully in her memoir about her life and the intimacy of witnessing Saro dying and raising a grieving child. Her story is defiant and moving. It's about bringing families together despite their differences, changing your life because of love and the challenges that come with that. It may even change your idea of romance and what it is to love someone. On this episode of Complicated Conversations, we are doubly thrilled to welcome sisters Tembi and Attica Locke about their new Netflix series, From Scratch, which is based on Tembi's New York Times bestselling memoir of the same name. We didn't think our hearts could be any more full after watching this beautiful, epic story of love and loss, but discussing it with Tembi and Attica brought us to even higher emotional highs! We chatted with them about how adapting it for the screen made for a deeper exploration of motherhood and mothering in all its complicated glory; how Tembi bearing witness to her grief allows others to be seen, but also translates the full embodiment of grief for those who haven't walked that path yet; the realistic and mature depiction of love and partnership in the series, going well beyond the “meet and cute” and giving us the sticky middle of a relationship; how Attica's intuition guided her choices for the writers room and the collective sisterhood that brought this book to the screen; what a “from scratch” moment can look like in all of our lives; and the ways Tembi and Attica's astrological signs make them the perfect team!
In honor of Mother's Quest turning 5, all season we've been sharing Throwback Thursday episodes from the archives. I've been excitedly anticipating resharing this episode with you with actress, author of the memoir From Scratch, and now co-creator and executive producer of the Netflix series by the same name, Tembi Locke. Since the limited series release just a few days ago, From Scratch has already climbed to the Top Ten in 74 countries and has captured the hearts of so many. Throughout my day today, I've been alternating between watching the show and relistening to my episode with Tembi, also beautifully dedicated by her sister and show co-creator Attica Locke. The combination of the two has rekindled an appreciation in me for honoring our ancestors, for the power of answering the call of our heroes journey, and of looking for light in the darkness to guide us through challenging times. Tembi says at the beginning of our conversation that she hoped it would be evergreen and we could find new meaning if we returned to it in a different time. That intention came true. This episode is a gift that feels just right for today. Like it did for me, I hope it provides the wisdom, inspiration and light you seek right now. When Tembi Locke was in her twenties she left a letter in a drawer at a coffee shop that read: "I want to live a life of love and companionship." Her heart-expanding memoir and Netflix series, From Scratch, encapsulates its manifestation across three love stories: With her late husband Saro, daughter Zoela, and mother-in-law, Nonna. From Scratch begins with Tembi landing in Italy for a semester abroad, where she'd soon run into Saro on the streets of Florence. The more I reflected on the book, the more its true gift revealed itself. Their family's journey navigating life's great questions — on love and loss, forgiveness and reconciliation — isn't solely an exploration of the answers. It's an embodiment of them. We see it in Tembi's conviction reconciling Saro and his family, after their marriage separated them. In his mother and sister's bravery answering their invitation in a traditional culture. Then, in their family's choice to begin anew, rather than relive the past. Throughout, we witness Tembi and Saro's choice to live fully, despite his devastating illness, and how it was his mother's love that carried her through his loss. Our conversation is an exploration of what matters most and how we may all embrace it.
In 2019, Tembi Locke's book From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home found a place in Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine Book Club and on the New York Times bestseller list. It has now been adapted as an eight-part series on Netflix starring Zoe Saldaña and Eugenio Mastrandrea.Tembi Locke talks with Seán about the adaptation that she helmed with her sister Attica Locke, about the experience of watching Zoe Saldaña portray a character based on Tembi's life, and about the thickly-woven fabric of family, food, love, serious illness, loss, and grief that's at the heart of Tembi's story. .Tembi mentions her recipe for Eggplant Parmigiana being used to feed the cast and crew during filming. Read the recipe (.pdf) here.Closing credit music: Anime Imperfette sung by Matteo Bocelli, From Scratch (Soundtrack from Netflix series) Laura Karpman & Raphael Saadiq.
New York Times bestselling author, actress, and screenwriter Tembi Locke joins Zibby to talk about her memoir, From Scratch, which was a past Reese's Book Club pick. The two discuss the lessons Tembi's late Italian husband taught her about cooking and enjoying food, what were some of the hardships she faced as a grieving single parent, and why it was so important to her to explain the emotions she felt after her husband's passing as clearly as possible in her writing. Tembi also shares how she didn't initially plan to write a memoir about her relationship with her husband's family before her sister—who helped turn this book into a new limited series—pushed her to try. New York Times best-selling author, TV producer, actor, and screenwriter Tembi Locke has a passion for connecting with an audience both on the page and on the screen. After going through a monumental rollercoaster life experience, Tembi put pen to paper and began the cathartic experience of writing down her personal story. This turned into Simon and Schuster's' New York Times-bestselling memoir, “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home,” which was chosen as a 2019 Reese's Book Club pick, and was quickly scooped up by Reese's Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine and Netflix as a limited series. But when Lino is faced with unimaginable health challenges and the couple's future is threatened, the two families come together to create an extended family unlike any they could have imagined, proving that love crosses all borders. Tembi Locke is an actor, an author, a screenwriter, and a producer who really knows how to connect with her audience. Her New York Times bestselling book, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home was Reese Witherspoon's 2019 Book Club pick. Reese loved it so much, she's executive producing the adaptation for a Netflix series where Zoe Saldana will star as Tembi. Tembi's memoir, From Scratch, is a sweeping, autobiographical romance that follows an American woman as she falls in love with a Sicilian man while studying abroad in Italy and then builds a life with him in the United States. When she unexpectedly loses her young Italian chef husband to illness, she's challenged to pull herself through grief so she can raise their adopted daughter as they would have raised her together: with hope, joy, and infinite love. Cooking becomes a way for her to be close to Saro both in Los Angeles and in his mother, Nona's kitchen, and why mourning food (morning with a “u”) offers comfort and sustenance. It's why a bowl of pasta always makes us feel better. Tembi has over sixty film and television credits under her belt as an accomplished actor and is currently recurring on Never Have I Ever, a comedy created by Mindy Kaling. Offscreen, Tembi is a nationally recognized speaker for her keynotes on resilience, loss, and motherhood with her TEDx talk viewed by individuals and nonprofits worldwide. I want to apologize for how intensely emotional this episode is. The hour leading up to talking to Tembi, I was overcome in a way I had not expected. I think the combination of experiencing the loss of my father, coupled with my intense fear of something happening to my husband…which by the way I know is extremely selfish talking to someone who went through it…and all that emotion coupled with Tembi's pure light, joy and incredible success - I don't know it was all overwhelming to me. For those who don't know, Tembi wrote about losing her husband. We recently connected at Reece's book club, because Hello Sunshine, Reece's production company is currently producing a Netflix show based on the book. Imagine casting your own life and being able to share your love, sorrow, and beautiful new life with the world? It's just magical. Tembi Locke is a TV producer, actor, New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter. In addition to her excellent accomplishments, she is also a life-long friend with whom I have spent hours too long to measure in conversation with her. She has written a memoir titled From Scratch. The book recounts the painful death of her husband and how she and her daughter literally had to rebuild a life without him From Scratch. The story has captured the heart of the world and will soon be seen as a limited series on Netflix. Her account of love, tragedy and return in many ways reflects what Tembi learned at the knees of her ancestors in East Texas, and the struggles of her parents in the Civil Rights Movement in Houston, TX – you always find a way to get to where you are going. No matter what. There would be no From Scratch without that determination that has colored the landscape of her life from the very beginning. Our conversation is expansive and the lessons she brings to us are right for this time. We talk about the importance of sisterhood, the crowning joys of long and authentic friendships, and the importance of taking first steps into the unknown. But my biggest takeaway from our time together this week? As Tembi says herself, “There is a value at the personal level in naming what you do. It's essential for us as artists. Naming it. Then [you're] owning that space. I'm owning that part of me. I'm not doing that for the front-facing world, I'm doing that for Tembi. I'm doing that for me.”Her words capture one of the guiding pillars of this podcast and what I would like to convey this month and all months through this platform. We own our lives. We own our narratives. We have a direct say in what our world will be. Tembi's websiteTembi on IGPatrick's WebsitePatrick's IGAt the Podium on IGPatrick on LinkedInPatrick on Facebook

I’m excited to share this beautiful conversation with Tembi Locke, that centers around the wisdom of our matriarchs and the seeds they plant within us to pursue our journeys, to create space for resilience, love, and creativity, and to invest in ourselves so we can serve the collective good. Tembi is a distinguished keynote speaker, writer, advocate, and American actor with more than sixty TV and film credits including the global hit Netflix series, Never Have I Ever. She is also the author of the New York Times bestselling book, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home … A Reese’s Book Club pick and soon to be Netflix series, starring Zoe Saldana. This episode’s dedication comes from Tembi’s sister, acclaimed author and writer and producer of many powerful series for television, including Little Fires Everywhere and When They See Us, Attica Locke. Attica dedicates the episode to her mother, to her matrilineal ancestors, and to her sister Tembi...all who have been as she says, “visionaries of love in her life.” The legacy of love and vision is a thread that weaves throughout my conversation with Tembi, as she names and shares about the four generations of women in her family, who she can trace back to the time of reconstruction after chattel slavery, and whose lessons help her navigate today’s world. We explore how her family’s ecosystem enabled her to invest in her dreams, nurture creativity and play, and pursue her creative endeavors and also how she carries that forward in how she mothers her daughter Zoela. Though we covered a lot of territory together, we realized there was so much more we wanted to discuss, including what it is like to star in her latest hit show Never Have I Ever, so Tembi has agreed to a special Mother’s Quest Q & A via zoom that we will schedule in September. Make sure to join the Mother’s Quest email list at www.mothersquest.com or the Facebook Group for details if you want to join us! I felt like this whole conversation was inspiration to light the way during these pandemic times, with profound moments that filled me with clarity and faith in the future. I hope this conversation helps remind you, as it did me and Tembi, of the power of our matriarchs, of sharing our experiences, of learning from and guiding each other, and seeking that sanctuary within so that we can serve a higher good. Much appreciation, P.S. Know someone who would love this conversation? Pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. But, in the midst of the difficulties, we also found new ways of being and deep resilience. There is wisdom and lessons learned to mine for that can help shine a light on what to do next. If you are looking for a book that feeds your heart, soul and mind, then 'From Scratch' by the incredible Tembi Locke is for you. This stunning memoir features love, food, family and loss. Whether you believe in love at first sight, you will definitely fall in love with 'From Scratch'. The book transports readers to the streets of Florence, where Tembi met professional chef, Saro. What began as young love soon blossomed into a truly beautiful relationship, even when Saro’s family initially disapproves. Tembi and Saro forge on to build a happy life in California, complete with successful careers and a beautiful baby girl named Zoela. The couple eventually reconcile with Saro’s family just as he faces a formidable cancer that consumes all their dreams. The story chronicles three summers Tembi and Zoela spend in Sicily as they piece together a life without Saro and find solace and nourishment - spiritually and literally - at the dining table. This is the love story that stays with you forever. 'From Scratch' was one of my favourite books of 2019. I had so much fun chatting with Tembi about her beautiful story. Enjoy! Los chicos del cuarto grado nos deleitan con "Poesía Tembi´u rehegua"
"For children their grief marches forward in a different way, meaning that as they grow and develop, they will have to revisit it at a new developmental stage. It's going to continue to change so that it's going to keep moving forward in time. Whereas for the adult -- the partner, the wife, the husband, let's say -- we're always looking back at our loss, where she's looking forward at her loss. We're looking back to the events that we had, the marriage I had -- you know the time we first did this, the time we first did that. She's looking at the time that she won't be able to do that. It's like you're looking at the timeline in different directions." -Tembi Locke I had such a great discussion with Tembi Locke for this episode. I met Tembi at Camp Widow years ago, and I'm so glad I did. She's an actor and now a New York Times bestselling author. Her first book – From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home – was recently published by Simon and Schuster and is one of Reese Witherspoon's picks for her book club. Tembi and I sat down to talk recently about her journey, including: What she learned as a caregiver to her husband for 10 years; Her service and advocacy work through The Kitchen Widow; What food and connection at her mother-in-law's table in Sicily has meant to her and her daughter in their grief; Tembi's tips for incorporating food into celebrations and memories, including simple tips for when cooking from scratch feels out of reach; Her thoughts on showing up for her daughter, even when she wasn't necessarily convinced that she could show up for herself; Her a-ha moment in realizing that she and her daughter – though they both lost the same person – have very different experiences based on their different relationships to that person; The idea that kids' grief is primarily looking ahead at what they're missing while adults' grief is looking back at what they lost; How helpful it's been for her to talk with friends who lost their dads when they were young; The relationship between anxiety and grief, and her experience with this; and Her desire to continue to show her daughter the world, both literally and in terms of preparing her for the world she will be living in. I hope you enjoy my discussion with Tembi Locke.

Tembi Locke is an actress and author of "From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home." The literary debut details her love affair with her late husband, Saro, a chef from Sicily whose family initially rejected Tembi and refused to attend their wedding because he was marrying a black actress from America. Saro's mother and family eventually did embrace them and their daughter, Zoela. But then tragically Saro was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. During this podcast, Tembi talks about her love affair with Saro and her decade of caring for him. She recounts the eventual bonding that happened with Saro's mother during summers spent in Sicily, cooking and healing. During this conversation, Tembi also provides guidance and inspiration for others dealing with grief and loss, as she does on the website she founded, The Kitchen Widow.

Who could have predicted that Tembi would find her way forward in grief at the table of her mother-in-law, in her small home in Siciliy. Join us to talk about the road Tembi took to find her future.
