Show #682 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 30th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 1 - Same as Nummi factory when it was in Fremont. Expecting to exceed it this year as they'll be adding Model Y. Love for Shanghai with the battery production getting a mention. Model Y is in production, with 4.1 MPkWh giving an EPA rating of 315 miles. How the Cybertruck went viral, never seen a level of demand like it, making as many as they can. The product is better than people realise. 2019 a billion dollars free cash flow, whilst building Shanghai and Model Y massive investments. Model Y , Giga Berlin, Tesla Semi, Solar Glass Roof, Cybertruck, Battery Improvements, FSD, next gen Roadster - hard to think of a better roadmap. 100x more cars in 2020 than in 2010. 500 to 500,000. Zach Kirkhorn: new and organic demand for Model 3. Increase in average selling price. Learned from Model 3 and new capacity is on board with less cost - Shanghai Model 3 and Fremont Model Y. Improvements in recurring revenue, beginning of updates via the app. Model Y this quarter! Higher gross margins on Model Y. Shanghai Model 3 will have local supply chain to lower cost. Warning about the car industry slowing down every Q1, and two big product launches. Elon 2 - Car sharing will start before they are autonomous. Tesla Network. Elon 3 - Insurance will be a major product for Tesla, and this is why. Elon 4 - this is why Tesla needs to build more Gigafactories, and make the cars closer to where the buyers are, rather than one factory in California. Elon 5 - the 18650 vs 2170 cells. It's really just a form factor because the chemistry has changed. Elon 6 - Cybertruck, they have way too much demand to fulfil quickly, they want to increase battery production capacity because it's fundamental. Elon keeps dropping hints about this. Battery day is April. 2000GWH of production a year. Elon tweeted in April that 35GWh/yr was their theoretical capacity was at two thirds of that. IN May 2016 at the Annual Shareholder Meeting Elon predicted it would operate at 150GWH/yr. Elon 7 - a new, more humble, uncertain Elon. We're not sure what Model Y will do to Model 3. Check out the phrase herky jerky s-curve! Impressed with a Model Y teardown - Elon starts to freestyle! Elon 8 - and the key. Autonomy is the key to making the most of the customer base. Elon 9 - on efficiency of powertrains. leading by a country mile! Plaid powertrain is mind blowing. End of the year is later than planned. But he describes it as alien technology from a kickass hardcore engineering team. Elon 10 - Tesla can demonstrate massive growth, doing what the other car companies are finding hard. Kind words around Panasonic, with an official comment on the CATL and LG Chem partnerships. Being SUPER deep on batteries. Man do we know a lot about batteries, jeez. Their new tech blows Elon's mind, it's going to be pretty cool. Quarterly earnings tend to bring out a lot short-term focus for shareholders, but I like to take a longer-term perspective and try to discern what’s really important in the bigger picture. Here’s what I’ll be looking for. 1. Battery/Drivetrain Investor Day When is it? When will Tesla start making their own cells? Where will the new cells be made? What’s the rollout look like? What are the risks? 2. Model Y What’s the Model Y production capacity at Fremont Factory? Will there be another factory in the U.S. to produce the Model Y? When is Model Y production targeted for at Giga Shanghai? When will first Model Y deliveries happen? How many Model Ys will be delivered this year? 3. China How many Model 3s will be delivered this year? 4. Giga Berlin When is Model 3 production targeted for at Giga Berlin? Will Model Y be produced at same time as Model 3? What is the first stage production capacity target? 5. Robotaxis When will FSD features be rolled out? What will be the first cities with Robotaxi network? When? How long do you think driver supervision will be needed in Tesla Network? 6. Solar Roof How many solar roofs will be installed this year? What’s the gross margin on solar roofs? 7. Tesla Energy How much energy storage will be deployed this year? 8. Cybertruck Where will Cybertruck be built? How many Cybertrucks per year do you expect to sell? 9. Tesla Semi How many Tesla Semis are projected to be delivered to customers in 2021? 2022? 10. 2020 Guidance How many vehicles will be delivered in 2020? How many Model Ys will be delivered in 2020? Will Q1 2020 be profitable? (S&P 500 inclusion) Any guidance on FSD deferred revenue? When will it be recognized? Any details on Fiat emission credit deal? How much per quarter, and when? 11. Revenue, profit within range Please share this video with others on Reddit, Facebook groups, and forums. Show #452 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 23rd April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA UNVEILS NEW CHIP, NEW COMPUTER So many outlets are talking about the Tesla Autonomy Day yesterday it's hard to know which comments to bring you, so lets start full nerd, as the presentation started with more gigahertz and teraflops than I ever wanted to know about. "Tesla has unveiled a new chip and computer for its cars custom designed by a team led by Apple veteran Pete Bannon. The hardware started full production in July 2018 and is already being retrofitted to employee vehicles, CEO Elon Musk said at the company’s first “Autonomy Day” – intended to showcase autonomous driving progress. Tesla has dropped NVIDIA’s products as a result." is the verdict of Computer Business Review: "The Tesla chip, built for the company by Samsung, is capable of 76 trillion operations per second (TOPS). It draws just 100 watts and includes what Bannon described as a “modest” GPU, with the aim being that as the neural net improves performance, the amount of post-processing the GPU does will shrink. The computer includes 12 A72 64-bit CPUs for general purpose processing that operate at 2.2. gigahertz." Pete Bannon said: "“In 2016 there was no ground-up neural network accelerator; everyone was adding instructions to their CPU or GPU or DSP to make it better for inference. I was hired in Feb 2016. I asked Elon if he was willing to spend all the money it takes to do full custom system design.” He said ‘are we gonna win?’ and I said ‘of course’ so we got a bunch of people and got to work.”. https://www.cbronline.com/news/tesla-chip-nvidia Fred at Electrek points out the hardware is already on the road: "Today, the company clarified that it was in all new Model S and Model X since March (start around March 20th) and in all new Model 3 vehicles earlier this month (starting around April 12th). Musk said that Tesla will start offering retrofits to current Tesla owners who bought the ‘Full Self-Driving package’ in the next few months." https://electrek.co/2019/04/22/tesla-full-self-driving-computer-details/ TESLA OUTLINES PLAN FOR ‘ROBOTAXI’ RIDE-SHARING SERVICE "Tesla owners who wish to use their vehicles for the Tesla Network will be able to manage their electric cars through their smartphone. Musk dropped several points of information that will be key to the Tesla Network’s Robotaxi service as well. " says Simon at Teslarati: "Among these is the vehicles’ longevity. The CEO noted that current-generation battery packs are good for about 300,000 to 500,000 miles, though Tesla’s upcoming batteries which will go on production next year will operate for twice as long, up to 1 million miles with minimal maintenance. Operating the Tesla Network will make the electric car maker a player in the highly-competitive ride-sharing market, which is dominated by giants such as Uber and Lyft. Thanks to their low operating costs as all-electric cars, Tesla’s electric cars hold an advantage. Tesla estimates that running a Robotaxi will cost around $0.18 or less per mile. This undercuts the $2-$3 cost per mile of ride-sharing." In a separate Electrek article Fred said: "On the app, Tesla owners will be able to add their cars to the shared fleet to earn money or summon an autonomous Tesla vehicle to pick them up and bring them to a destination. Musk dove deep into the economics of such a fleet — both from Tesla’s perspective and from the perspective of a Tesla owner. As we previously reported, now all new Tesla vehicles are equipped with what Musk believes is all the hardware necessary to achieve full self-driving through future software updates. He estimates that Tesla will have over a million of those vehicles on the road by the end of next year — around the time they start activating full self-driving capability" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autonomy-day-livestream-updates/ https://electrek.co/2019/04/22/tesla-robotaxi-network-self-driving-fleet-ride-sharing-cars/ One of the Electrek forum members MrXtraconservative said "People called Musk crazy when he said his rockets would fall from space, then safely land backwards. Impossible! Today is more of the same." STUFF ELON MUSK SAID ABOUT TESLA AUTONOMOUS CARS ON MONDAY, RANKED Gizmodo ranks how outrageous some of the statements were, with more Elons awarded for anything out there. The new Tesla micro-chip is “the best chip in the world... objectively” (Gizmodo say: according to Bloomberg, even Nvidia—which Musk said Tesla had already transitioned away from as a chip supplier to begin installing the in-house chip—admitted that Tesla had “raised the bar for self-driving computers.”. One out of five Elons) Tesla will have level 5 autonomy in 2020 which means they will self-drive so well “no one needs to pay attention" (Gizmodo say: “Claiming that the Tesla cars have the hardware for full autonomy and only need the software is like saying that we have seeds, we just need to plow, plant, nurture, harvest and then eat,” Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute engineer Raj Rajkumar told the Verge. “Basically they are at the starting point—full autonomy is many years away.” Three out of Five Elons) “Probably two years from now we’ll make a car with no steering wheels or pedals.” (Five out of five Elons.) https://gizmodo.com/stuff-elon-musk-said-about-tesla-autonomous-cars-on-mon-1834233680 GOOGLE MAPS HELPS YOU FIND OPEN EV CHARGING STATIONS IN REAL TIME "From now on, you just have to fire up Google Maps if you need to hunt for an open EV charging station." reports Engadget UK today: "The latest versions of Google Maps for Android, iOS and the web now show real-time availability for charging ports in the US and UK, giving you a better idea of when to go for a top-up -- you're no longer relegated to static info like before. The feature won't help you find a Tesla Supercharger (you don't really need that given Tesla's app), but it will cover the networks of Chargemaster, EVgo and SemaConnect, with Chargepoint coming soon." https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/23/google-maps-real-time-ev-charging-station-info/ EVGO AND MAVEN GIG INTRODUCE FIRST IN THE NATION PUBLIC-RIDESHARE FAST EV CHARGING HUBS At a special ribbon cutting event today, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined LA-based EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast EV charging network, and Maven, General Motors’ car sharing platform, to celebrate the introduction of a new, innovative network of EV fast charging hubs that feature both public and dedicated fast chargers for Maven Gig’s shared-use vehicles. Los Angeles is home to EVgo’s first local network of these public-rideshare fast EV charging hubs, which will include three locations across the city, further demonstrating the city’s role as a leader in transportation electrification. Today’s event celebrated the official opening of the Venice Crossroads fast EV charging hub located at 8985 Venice Blvd in Los Angeles. Venice Crossroads is located six miles away from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and adjacent to the 10 Freeway and the Metro Expo Line. The first hub in the network opened last month in the heart of Hollywood at the Hollywest Promenade Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo: "Our new network of public-rideshare fast charging hubs in Los Angeles is the first of its kind and will make charging quick and easy for Maven Gig members, while helping to improve access for all EV drivers across the city. Show #450 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st April 2019. Welcome to a new Patreon EXECUTIVE PRODUCER SARI KANGASOJA. Hi Sari!! TESLA TAKES SHORT SELLER TO COURT, SAYING HE MENACED ITS WORKERS "Elon Musk’s war with Tesla Inc. short sellers just got weirder. The electric carmaker claims a California man who it says is part of an online group of short sellers has been stalking its Fremont factory and harassing its employees -- including dangerously swerving his car toward a Tesla Model 3 that was on a freeway test drive and injuring a Tesla security guard in a hit-and-run on company property." reports Bloomberg: "Tesla persuaded a state court judge on Friday to issue a temporary restraining order requiring the man to stay at least 100 yards away from its factory and employees." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-04-21/tesla-takes-short-seller-to-court-saying-he-menaced-its-workers TESLA PUTS NEW MODEL 3 INVENTORY ONLINE FOR BROWSING AND ‘IMMEDIATE’ DELIVERY "Instead of picking options and waiting a few weeks for delivery of a custom-configured Tesla, buyers can now browse Tesla’s inventory of new Model 3s online and find cars available for immediate delivery (within a few days)." says Electrek today: "Until today, this was only available for Model S and X. There still aren’t any used cars listed for Model 3, but Tesla’s new inventory is accessible for anyone to browse online. Also cars are only appearing in some geos like California." https://electrek.co/2019/04/20/tesla-model-3-new-inventory-immediate-delivery/ BYD DEBUTS E-SEED GT CONCEPT, SONG PRO AND E SERIES AT AUTO SHANGHAI At the Auto Shanghai 2019, BYD has unveiled its E-SEED GT concept car and Song Pro SUV alongside its all-new e-series models on April 16 at the 18th International Automobile Industry Exhibition. The company also showcased its latest Dynasty series of vehicles, which were recently unveiled at the company’s spring product launch in Beijing. A total of 23 new car models were exhibited at the event, held at Shanghai’s National Convention and Exhibition Center, fully demonstrating the BYD New Architecture (BNA) design, the 3rd generation of Dual Mode technology, plus the world-leading e-platform framework. IN MARCH 2019 JAGUAR SOLD OVER 2,000 I-PACE "Jaguar I-PACE sales reported by the manufacturer increased in March to a near-record level of 2,044, which turns out to be 8.4% of total volume for the brand globally." according to InsideEVs.com: "Hopefully, the output will continue to increase or at least stay above 2,000 per month." https://insideevs.com/march-2019-jaguar-sold-2000-i-pace/ THIS CLASSIC FORD BRONCO IS FULLY ELECTRIC AND TO DIE FOR "Zero Labs Automotive is showing off its plan to build an electric version of the original Ford Bronco. More than just slapping an electric motor under the hood and pushing them out the door, this project also gives the off-roader modern luxury with things like real wood interior panels and digital instruments. The company plans to build an initial run of 150 of them and reservations are open now." writes Chris Bruce for Motor1.com: "Zero Labs Automotive Bronco electric restomod has a claimed 360-horsepower (269-kilowatt) output. A 70-kilowatt-hour battery allows for a 190-mile (306-kilometer) range. The motor runs through a five-speed manual transmission, which seems like an odd choice considering most electric vehicles use just a single speed. https://www.motor1.com/news/345513/ford-bronco-ev-conversion/ ALEXANDER FRANK Yes, I’d love my Model 3 making money for me while I’m not using it, which is actually most of the week while I’m working (Monday – Friday). I can’t park at my work, that’s why I’m taking my electric scooter or my Renault Twizy (or soon VanMoof electric bike). I’d only add it to the Tesla Network after I’d feel comfortable watching Netflix while being driven by the car though. I love the cabin facing camera, gives me some ease. My day would then look like this: I’d unplug my Tesla Model 3 from my 11kw home charger, it’d drive me to work while I listen to your podcasts, once in the city at my work there’s no need to park, it would go about earning money. An hour or so before I want to leave work I’d press a button on the app and the car would wait for me outside to take me back home. LOVE IT! RAJEEV NARAYAN I may not be ready to use my primary EV as an automated taxi, as if something happened to it I would be without a car. If, however when it came time to buy a new EV, I would be wiling to get the old one be an automated taxi, instead of simply trading it in. I imagine a future where a network of privately and company owned EVs run by Uber, Lyft or even Tesla act as automated Taxis, and the ride sharing company pays you a fee to use your car. This would allow the owner to make a little extra income, while reducing capital costs to the taxi company. JOHN FRUHWIRTH No, I will not hire my Tesla out. It is my dream car, I am emotionally attached to it and can't see myself treating it as a utility vehicle to make money for me. MARK RICHARDS I park in a garage, so it isn’t practical to make my car available in a car share network. I don’t live in a city, in fact I am on the very edge of “civilization”, so I don’t think there would be much demand out here. Robyn Edwards Perth Western Australia NO.. I am receiving my Kona in 2.5 hours.... I will feel edgy if my partner drives it! A complete stranger? Never. I share pool vehicles at work, I see how they are treated and that is a closed group! KARL CRAMER I once drove for a ride sharing service and people would do disrespectful things to my car while I was still in it driving them, like leaving garbage or scratching at the roof fabric. I can't imagine what jerks would do if there was no one. I'll definitely use the service but I'm not going to sacrifice MY car to the horde. NEIL I don't think I would let my car be used, not because I would worry about it,but because I would worry about how it got charged. With a model 3 I would use about 40% of the battery for the daily commute. With another 40% for saving the battery life and cold weather allowance that would only leave 20% for that taxi service. I would want to see automatic charging stations like the Tesla snake they showed a few years ago before I would think of reconsidering. ASHLEY HILL depending on the options I'm considering it though is a few other things that make it easily worthwhile; like if was part of a Co-Operative (say a US$2000 deposit buy in) and if someone did cause troubles with it fleet would be large enough that I would have access to another one while fixes got underway. Would also do if remote operation instead of full self driving was on the table for same deal; would let someone remote drive it to another driver similar to current car next door /car share service; especially if the Tesla implemented an always on "near-impossible to crash" feature. Show #443 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th April 2019. Hello to new Patreon PRODUCER Pete Stothard holland DAVID FINCH : I’ve just listened to the Saturday podcast. I’m not sure if it’s worthy of a little correction or not, but you quoted Elon as saying deliveries starting May / June, when in fact his tweet said “hopefully June / July”. RENE SCHNIEDER: "I just got a letter these minutes that the standard range plus is available for order in Switzerland: „From today on the Model 3 Standard Range Plus is available in Switzerland." TOM RAFTERY: "It that time of year to organise the summer holidays (possibly I’ve left it a bit late already!). And I want to bring the family to Norway to show them what a country with a high penetration of Evs can look like (and to take in the beautiful scenery Norway can offer). I have been trying to find information on EV hire options in Norway, and there isn’t a lot out there (that I found)." RIVIAN R1T TRUCK & R1S SUV WOW NYC AHEAD OF AUTO SHOW "The New York Auto Show doesn’t officially open to the public until April 19th, but that doesn’t mean the fun hasn’t already started. The weekend before an auto show opens is usually the real kickoff party, with manufacturers trying to get a jump on the competition, and many opt to show off their new vehicles before they hit the show floor the following week. That precisely what Rivian did with its R1T electric pickup truck and R1S electric SUV." reports Tom " InsideEVs.com: "These events were mostly for VIPs and reservation holders; they weren’t press events where we could schedule interview time, so unfortunately nothing new was learned. I suspect if Rivian is going to announce any new news, it will be done so during the Auto Show for maximum exposure. As you might expect, the crowd was extremely enthusiastic, and it reminded me of how it feels at Tesla events. Since most of the people in attendance were reservation holders, they were already on-board with what Rivian is doing. Plus, for most, it was their first opportunity to see the vehicles that they plunked $1,000 down on to reserve." https://insideevs.com/rivian-wows-nyc-r1t-electric-pickup-truck-video/ MITCH EVANS EARNS FIRST FORMULA E VICTORY FOR PANASONIC JAGUAR RACING Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans claims an emotional first victory in Rome with DS Techeetah’s Andre Lotterer in second and HWA Racelab’s Stoffel Vandoorne bringing home both his and the team’s first podium finish in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Evans stalked the back of Lotterer’s car in the opening phase of the race, with the DS TECHEETAH driver unable to pull a gap. With both teams and drivers evenly-matched on pace, it became a tactical battle about when to deploy ATTACK MODE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ccQUaK9RlM AUDI ANNOUNCES Q2 L E-TRON WITH 38 KWH BATTERY FOR CHINA From the Audi Press Office: "two electric models will make their series debut in Shanghai: the Audi e-tron* and the Q2 L e-tron, which was designed especially for China and is built in the Foshan plant. The compact SUV, which will be delivered to the first customers in the summer of 2019, is even experiencing its world premiere in Shanghai. Audi CEO Bram Schot: “With both the Audi Q2 L e-tron and Audi e-tron electric models, we are launching a new era in China with our partner FAW. The compact SUV will be produced locally already this year and, beginning in 2020, the Audi e-tron will also be produced in China, our largest and most important market worldwide.” The body of the Audi Q2 L e-tron is 33 millimeters (1.3 in) longer than that of the basic model. The car is powered by an electric motor on the front axle that mobilizes 100 kilowatts and 290 newton meters (213.9 lb-ft). With a battery capacity of 38 kilowatt hours, it has a range of up to 265 kilometers (164.7 mi), determined according to the local homologation procedure." https://www.audi-mediacenter.com/en/press-releases/audi-at-auto-shanghai-2019-11479 POLESTAR 2 PUTS FOCUS ON CHINA WITH MANUFACTURING SITE AND FIRST POLESTAR SPACE LOCATION CONFIRMED At the Chinese debut of the Polestar 2 in Shanghai, Polestar confirmed that production of the new electric performance fastback will take place in Luqiao, Zhejiang Province, from early 2020. The production facility will also produce world-class Volvo and Lynk & Co. models that share their core CMA platform with Polestar 2. Polestar 2 is the first car on the modular chassis to feature a fully electric drivetrain. Thomas Ingeleth, Chief Executive Officer at Polestar: “Being able to produce Polestar 2 in the Luqiao plant in China shows the clear synergies of our ownership structure and gives us a great industrial advantage. With Geely and Volvo Cars as our owners, we are able to leverage their expertise in many different ways. Manufacturing is one of the most important areas, helping us accelerate our progress and entry into the market with the confidence that Polestar 2 production will begin as planned early next year.” Following the confirmation in 2018 that the first-ever Polestar Space will be located in Oslo, Norway, Polestar has now confirmed that the first Polestar Space in China will be located in central Beijing. Establishing the Polestar footprint initially in Oslo and Beijing highlights two of the world’s most influential electric car markets as primary targets for the brand. The Polestar Space in Beijing will open in late 2019 and signals the roll-out of Polestar Spaces in China. Around 20 facilities spread between 11 Chinese cities will be opened during 2020 – about one third of all initial Polestar Spaces expected to be opened globally. ELON MUSK ANNOUNCES APRIL 22 AS START OF TESLA FULL SELF DRIVING "Tesla announced a new event – Tesla Autonomy Investor Day – on April 22 at its headquarters in Palo Alto. There are not many details about the event, besides the topic of autonomous driving. According to Elon Musk, investors can expect a demo of full autonomous driving," says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "One of the biggest projects is the Tesla Network – a fleet of autonomous cars, available for sharing. It would be a double win for the manufacturer – first because it provides another stream of revenue and second because Tesla could use cars at the end of lease (no buyout option was previously announced)." https://insideevs.com/musk-announces-april-22-as-start-of-tesla-full-self-driving/ VOLKSWAGEN UNVEILS ID. ROOMZZ ELECTRIC SUV CONCEPT IN SHANGHAI; SERIES MODEL IN 2021 Volkswagen is expanding its electric ID. product range with a multi-variable all-round model: the new ID. ROOMZZ—a zero-emission SUV in the five meter category. Volkswagen will present the concept car as part of a world première at Auto Shanghai (18 to 26 April) in an homage to China, currently the largest market for zero-emission vehicles. The series version of the ID. ROOMZZ—which follows on the more compact ID. CROZZ—is scheduled to take to the road from 2021. Alongside the ID. ROOMZZ, the ID. CROZZ and the compact ID. (all set to have a market début in 2020), other members of this new electric vehicle family include the iconic ID. BUZZ van and the avant-garde saloon ID. VIZZION (both will make their market début in 2022). in the European WLTP cycle the maximum range is 450 kilometers (280 miles). The battery is charged via an inductive interface. Conventional charging via a plug is also possible. The ID. ROOMZZ combines its IQ.DRIVE systems, enabling the concept car to navigate traffic all by itself (fully automated) as desired. Volkswagen is consolidating all assistance systems and technologies involved in autonomous driving under the umbrella brand IQ.DRIVE." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/04/20190414-roomzz.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK BRIAN THOMPSON Several reasons to be reticent... - Parts and service centers are not readily available -if you had rich rebuilds in your town, I would consider -I've recently had some things crop up at 70k on my 85 S that would have cost a lot had it not have been a covered under warranty. They replaced the entire battery pack. Then a couple thousand miles later the charge port went out. On the loaner they gave me, that car had 50k on it, the main screen went out... -if you had rich rebuilds knowledge, then you could go for it, but at 250k there is no, zero, zippo warranty and you would be covering the cost. If you still are interested, call and ask Tesla what the cost is to get a rebuilt high voltage battery pack, as well as getting the main CPU and screen replaced, as well as drive unit and inverter. Those are the big ticket items. If this was ten years from now and there were lots of used parts available then it would be a different situation. I would try to claw my way into a CPO car with less than 50k on it, that way it comes with 4 year 50k warranty. In the US, tesla is selling the 2012 and 2013 85s in the low $30,000 with financing. RAJEEV NARAYAN I think one should expect to have to put some money into any vehicle with > 250,000 miles, with respect to EVs the question is the longevity of the expensive bits- the powertrain and the battery. It is known that an electric powertrain generally lasts much longer, in fact I think Tesla even suggested their powertrain can go potentially > 1 million miles. With respect to the battery, I know the NMC 622 cells in most EVs nowadays can cycle about 2,000 to 3,000 times before i'ts capacity has degraded to 80 to 90%, at which point they say it's "unsuitable" for further EV use, though in my opinion that's debatable- given the C rating of most of these battery cells. My Chevy Bolt has a 60kWH battery and EPA estimate of 3.8miles/kWH, giving 456,000 to 684,000 miles. ASEER A EV is different and a million mile is not that outlandish a claim as motors run production lines 24/7 for many years and we don’t expect them to fail quickly today the same would be true for EVs and given that brakes also last longer (regen) it seems if your a highmiler EV is an obvious choice. This is before we take into consideration comfort and space. JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE Firstly I think you should go for a high mileage Tesla, I would if I could afford it. Would make a great story to write about and to follow...”Life with a super high mileage Tesla” or “High mileage Tesla....what could go wrong” JOHN FRUHWIRTH Given what I know now, Yes, I would buy a very high mileage EV but iff (if and only if) it is was a Tesla model 3. Why? Because: Its drive train is guaranteed for 1 million miles. Its batteries should last anywhere from 300k-500k miles. It's frame has been over engineered. It is the safest car on the road ...John Fruhwirth TOBE IN SAN DIEGO I for one think it'd be brilliant for you to get the super high mileage Tesla and keep us apprised of your trials and tribulations with it...if you can afford it. I presume that could at least be considered a business expense for a podcaster like you. I would definitely worry that it could end up costing costing you some pounds though. (plus in depth story about his 2012 Model S 85) MATT PISCIONE Yes. with a caveat. As someone who works as a technician for an automotive manufacturer with an EV named after something that you might find in trees, based on their battery degradation issues I would probably not. However, the mechanical components are very durable as they are shared with other vehicles. That being said, I would be much more inclined to purchase a different EV that does not have battery degradation issues. JAMES LOVES as a Mercedes Benz master tech here in California I my self have replaced six -B- class "ELECTRIC MACHINES" due to internal coolant leaks. These repairs were done under warranty thank goodness as the ELECTRIC MACHINE is a very pricey item. This front wheel drive unit is the same as the rear power unit used in the Tesla model -S-. Another thing one might consider is the battery warranty is 8 years 100k(miles) how ever a high voltage battery inspection of degradation must be performed annually and recorded.(Tesla battery Tesla drive train) if not performed or skipped the warranty is lost. This has kept me from My own purchase of a used -B- class as they are truly a blast to drive and have all the comforts of a Benz. DAFYDD Although all the electric gubbins would in all likelihood have plenty of life left in them. One has to consider, the rest of the vehicle has also done all those miles too. As have all the interior fittings. I’d be more willing to buy such a vehicle if I lived in Norway, Sweden, Finland or the like, where they routinely under-seal a vehicle for winter and clean it off and inspect the underside in spring. I’d be more willing to buy one, if the vehicle had be kept hot dry climate. Where salting roads was unheard of. CHARLIE MILNER I'm currently looking at a second had Tesla. I'm looking at up to 90,000 miles. One thing that would concern me is the suspension wear. I had an old MK4 golf that after 120k miles the tracking was adjusted as much as possible and it was only just about ok. Indicating suspension components needed to be changed. If there is evidence the tracking is ok and it's been well looked after I'd consider higher milage. The motor and battery (especially with Tesla) is not a concern to me. GARETH FROM THE CHARGEUP CAMPAIGN Although it does not meet your definition of high mileage my 2014 Leaf has been a bit of a mixed bag. Technically within the warranty period but with 96k on the clock it was outside the warranty range by about 36k. It has been pretty much reliable but I have found that I am paying for the maintenance for other people’s miles (droplink bars, track rod ends, tyres, 12 battery etc) and the charger died since as an ex taxi it had done over 4,600 rapid charges. I fixed this myself at a cost of £500 though Nissan wanted a mere £24k! My hope is that now all that work is done it will just work for quite some time. Show #442 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 13th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ELON TWEETS We'll kick off with a series of tweets by Elon Musk and because I'm being selfish I'll start with the one which is of most interest to RHD buyers in the UK. I actually missed this tweet but it was sent to me by podcast supporter David Finch... "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k." "Ahem RHD" Journalist Tom Randall: "Tesla shares fell after Nikkei reported that Panasonic is freezing spending on more Gigafactory expansion. Panasonic said it reached 35 GWh/yr capacity in March. That's already enough to build over 500k Model 3/yr+Powerwalls—more than Tesla can handle" Elon replied: "Incorrect. Pana cell lines at Giga are only at ~24GWh/yr & have been a constraint on Model 3 output since July. No choice but to use other suppliers for Powerwall/Powerpack cells. Tesla won’t spend money on more capacity until existing lines get closer to 35GWh theoretical." As for Full Self Driving Elon said: "Please note that the price of the Tesla Full Self-Driving option will increase substantially over time" "Starting May 1" On the subject of reliability: "Model 3 drive unit & body is designed like a commercial truck for a million mile life. Current battery modules should last 300k to 500k miles (1500 cycles). Replacing modules (not pack) will only cost $5k to $7k." On the subject of Full Self Driving, Patreon Supporter Cesar Trujillo said to me: "Shooooot. With all the Tesla news I wondered if FSD autopilot would come down in price again. I looked on my car and on my Tesla account and there is no where to upgrade anymore. I should have done it when it was cheap. I only bought the enhanced autopilot not full self driving during the fire sale." And on the AI podcast: "“Buying a car today is an investment into the future. I think the most profound thing is that if you buy a Tesla today, I believe you are buying an appreciating asset – not a depreciating asset. The cars currently being produced, with the hardware currently being produced, are capable of full self-driving.” GM REPORTEDLY WON’T INVEST IN ELECTRIC PICKUP TRUCK STARTUP RIVIAN "A proposed tie-up between the largest U.S.-based automaker and a fledgling company trying to make an electric pickup truck may be doomed, based on a new report from Bloomberg. The publication reported Friday that General Motors and Rivian have ended discussions that would have had the Detroit-based auto giant give the startup a healthy cash infusion to bring its products to market." says Zac fro InsideEVs.com: "The deal would have placed GM alongside Amazon as a major investor in the startup manufacturer, as the tech giant announced a strategic investment with Rivian in February that was part of a $700 million equity round. GM’s role was reportedly to help Rivian with manufacturing and parts purchasing, while GM would have received the engineering it needed to make an electric pickup truck before key rivals Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles would be able to. Trucks are essential to all three of those automakers’ profits." https://insideevs.com/gm-rivian-electric-pickup-truck-amazon/ TESLA MODEL 3 LEASE PROGRAM OPENS DOOR TO FUTURE RIDE-HAILING NETWORK "Tesla has officially launched its Model 3 leasing program to include any variant of the all-electric midsize sedan." says Teslarati: "Unlike traditional agreements, the Model 3 vehicles under lease will not be available for purchase once the lease matures. Tesla intends to use those vehicles as part of its coming autonomous ride-hailing network, a service dubbed as the Tesla Network. The decision to maintain ownership of its leased Model 3 fleet for such future use indicates Tesla’s high level of confidence in the development of its Full Self-Driving program. Any revenue lost from not offering its used cars for purchase is clearly expected to be generated through other profitable means" https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-lease-ride-hailing-network/ TESLA OPENS ORDERS FOR CHEAPER MODEL 3 VERSION IN EUROPE AND CHINA "Along with the changes to its vehicle lineup last night, Tesla also opened orders for a cheaper version of the Model 3 in European markets and China." writes Fred at Electrek: "After removing the Mid-Range and Long-Range RWD Model 3, Tesla is now offering only Standard Range Plus along with the Long Range AWD and Performance versions. Tesla says that the other versions can still be ordered as “off-the-menu” items, but that’s now Tesla’s main Model 3 lineup. For European markets, the introduction of the Standard Range Plus version results in the cheapest Tesla ever being available on the old continent. In Norway, Model 3 now starts 377,020 Kroners, which is equal to about $44,375 USD." https://electrek.co/2019/04/12/tesla-opens-orders-cheaper-model-3-europe-china/ AUTOCAR FIRST DRIVE: REDESIGNED, EURO-SPEC KIA SOUL EV "We recently shared Autocar’s first drive of the all-new Kia Soul EV. However, that drive took place in South Korea. Now, the publication has access to a Euro-spec model and provides initial insight." says InsidEVs.com: "The gas-powered Soul is a popular vehicle in the U.S. due to its low price and considerable versatility. However, Autocar points out that it’s not nearly as sought-after in Europe. Kia is moving to change that by offering a completely redesigned all-electric Soul with a 64-kWh battery pack and plenty of range. In addition, while the new, gas-powered Soul will still be sold in the U.S., European customers will only be able to buy the battery-electric variant. Autocar says that while Kia’s e-Niro may be more practical due to its greater cargo capacity, the Soul has an edge when it comes to its interior, and it’s performance is about equal to that of the Niro EV TOP GEAR DISSECTS THE PININFARINA BATTISTA, THE 1,874-HP EV "During the Geneva Motor Show last month, we saw the most powerful road car ever to come from Italy. No, it wasn’t a Ferrari or a Lamborghini – actually, it was the first creation from Automobili Pininfarina, which is now an automaker, not just a design studio. Pininfarina says the Battista is the “world’s first pure electric luxury hyper GT” and the car deserves every single word from this colorful description. In a new video, the folks over at Top Gear explain why." reports Motor1: "Probably the most interesting part of the video shines more light on the construction of the Battista, starting with information about the 120-kWh battery, which is, in fact, the same battery package you can find in a Rimac Concept_Two. Reid then talks about the four electric motors that propel that car – and one important thing we learned is that most of the car’s driving modes actually limit the amount of torque you have available in order to make the machine more easily controllable for the driver." https://www.motor1.com/news/344319/top-gear-dissects-pininfarina-battista/ CAR AND DRIVER SAYS KIA NIRO EV IS A SPECTACULAR ELECTRIC CAR "Kia isn't helping its sales prospects by limiting the Niro EV to only 12 states (California and seven of the other ZEV states—but neither Vermont nor Maine—plus Georgia, Texas, Washington, and Hawaii). Although Niro EVs are already being produced in Kia's Hwaseong, South Korea, plant and are en route to U.S. dealer lots, pricing has yet to be announced. But a safe bet is that they will arrive at the same $37,495 the Kona Electric demands. Plus, Hyundai and Kia have sold so few electrified vehicles that theirs will get the maximum $7500 federal tax credit for years to come—a perk for which Teslas and Chevys no longer qualify." https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a26144426/2019-kia-niro-ev-driven/ KIA MIGHT START MAKING ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE "Kia is experiencing a success story with its lineup of plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles. Which has now presented it with a problem of making enough to satisfy demand. That’s why it’s reportedly looking into building its electrified cars in Europe." reports InsideEVs.com: "While the Niro, Optima and Soul hybrids and electrics are currently all made in South Korea for global consumption, Kia may leverage its plant in Slovakia to supply European markets, according to Automotive News Europe. Kia Europe Chief Operating Officer Emilio Herrera told the publication the company would need to sell 32,000 EVs every year from 2021 to comply with the EU’s emissions regulations. Kia is being pressured by the EU to cut its fleet average for C02 emissions to 94 g/km by 2021, something it can only do by selling more plug-ins." https://insideevs.com/kia-electric-cars-europe-production/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. "I've never seen two Chinese guys comparing (car) engines (like people do in Europe)," says Freeman Shen, founder of Chinese electric vehicle start-up WM Motor Technology Co., Ltd. "China doesn't have a long driving culture...the car is more a tool for people to get from point A to B." It's one reason his three-year-old company, with RMB10 billion (US$1.5 billion) in funding, is taking a different route than most of its rivals. Instead of simply producing a decent, mass market car, WM will offer its EV customers flexible ownership, essentially combining Tesla Motors and Uber in one company. It's an important selling point given that WM is targeting young Chinese consumers, who are famously quick to accept new things, but far less willing to purchase new cars. For Shen, the former chairman of Volvo China and a 20-year automobile industry veteran, the future of China's car industry will be shaped by three words: electrification, connectivity and sharing. As such, his company is creating a 100% electric car that is connected 24/7 and will let owners choose if they want to share their cars. "For example, a customer owns our car in Shanghai but he travels to Beijing a lot. With a Super ID (a membership service offered by WM), he can easily access another WM Motor vehicle while in Beijing and lease out his car in Shanghai," Shen told China Money Network at the company's headquarters in Shanghai. The "new business model", as the soft-spoken Shen calls it, is full of unforeseen challenges. Jia Yueting, the disgraced and currently exiled ex-chief of LeEco, wanted to build something similar with that company's smart car unit LeSEE and car hauling platform Yidao. That plan was cut short by corporate financial crisis that is still unfolding. And Tesla itself plans to launch a ride sharing system called "Tesla Network" as early as this years, allowing its car owners to share their vehicles, and creating immediate competition for WM. "The challenge is how to make this dream (become) real...we are in a race to see (which company) can get to the market (first)," said Shen. It is a race indeed. China, the world's largest car and EV market, already has three EV start-ups valued at US$1 billion, (NIO, WM Motor and BAIC BJEV, according to China Money Network's China Unicorn Ranking) with another one (Future Mobility Corporation) approaching unicorn valuation. The U.S., on the other hand, has none. Read more on five Chinese EV start-ups that could rival Tesla Competition between these well-funded Chinese EV start-ups is intense. NIO's ES8 model will hit the market in mid-December. Another Chinese EV start-up, CHJ Automotive (known as Chehejia in Chinese), completed a test production run two months ago at its new factory, which was built in only one year. Shen says WM Motor's high-tech customer-to-manufacturer (C2M) factory in Wenzhou will be completed at the end of this year and small volume production will commence during the first quarter of 2018. Only then will we know if his digital car dream can become reality. Read an interview Q&A below. Also subscribe to China Money Podcast for free in the iTunes store, or subscribe to our weekly newsletter. ON CHINA'S EV INDUSTRY: Q: How would you describe the current transition toward electric vehicles by China and the global automobile industry? A: As you know, China is already the largest car market in the world, and it also leads in electrification. The first reason China is going electric is because it relies on imports for about 60% of its oil, of which 80% is used by cars. From a national security respective, the Chinese government has to push very hard for electrification. Pollution is another reason. The electric vehicle revolution has been going on for about five years. However, at first not many people took it seriously. But I believe now is the right time. Customers are already well educated, and electric cars are a good solution for daily u...
