From the audio to the visual, we delve into the wondrous world of the album sleeve with Bill Smith, of Bill Smith Studios, responsible for some wonderful images in the 80s. 1. THE JAM (1977-1981) After getting his foot in the door at Polydor in the 70s, Bill has a breakthrough with The Jam. He is responsible for the artwork for all their albums up to and including Sound Affects as well as a number of single sleeves. More importantly, he has one shot at the iconic The Jam logo. RIP Rick. 2. THE CURE (1979-80)From mod to goth, Bill moves from the immediacy of The Jam to the more surreal, indie world of The Cure. Bill discusses working on their first three LP's. One a bit of an outlier in their back catalogue, the other more typical. But which household appliance WAS Robert Smith??3. GENESIS (1980-83) Another contrast, this time the prog-rockers entering their 80s pop period with some truly iconic sleeves for Duke, Abacab and Genesis. Fortuitious accidentslead to the iconic Abacab sleeve. AI won't/can't do that shit.Discussion moves onto discussing copyright and who owns the rights to artwork; the artist or the designer. Then talk on the general LP artwork package; sleeve, back sleeve, inner sleeve, disc labels, etc ending on why he didn't do the cover to Invisible Touch.4. THOMAS DOLBY (1981-82)A very special collaboration with former guest, Thomas Dolby, leads to uniquely brilliant artwork for The Golden Age of Wireless and related singles.5. NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC (1983)Nowt more iconic in the UK than the Now series and Bill was there from Vol 1.billsmithstudios.com80sography@gmail.comTwitter @80sographyBlue Sky @80sographySend us a text
To commemorate the death of Rick Buckler on 17 February 2025, this episode of What Do You Call That Noise? The XTC Podcast features an interview the drummer did with a group of XTC fans and fellow musicians in March 2018. Buckler recorded Sound Affects with the Jam at the same time as XTC were working on Black Sea and, indeed, he joined in with the clapping on Don't Lose Your Temper. Recorded for What Do You Call That Noise? An XTC Discovery Book, the conversation ranges from musicianship to studio techniques, from session drummers to formative influences, from home-made kits to ride cymbals. Joining Buckler around the table in 2018 were Mark Fisher, Mark Thomas, Andy Rankin, Laurie Langan, Sarah Palmer, Rohan Onraet, and Louis Barfe. Music by Keith McTaggart. What Do You Call That Noise? “It's just the way music is consumed. My kids went to summer camp, and they wanted to, like, bring music with them. But they're not allowed to have electronic devices, like, they can't bring a phone. And my son was, like, ‘Oh, I'll just take my phone.' And I'm like, ‘No, you don't understand, like, you're not going to have internet.' And they're like, ‘Well, how do I get the music from, like, Spotify, like, on my phone?' I'm like, ‘You can't without internet.' And just the whole concept, like, you used to carry a record or even a cassette or a CD, and it was physical, and you had it.” – Sherene Strausberg This episode is the second half of my conversation with Emmy-nominated art director, sound engineer, and founder and creative director of 87th Street Creative Sherene Strausberg as we talk about her work to bring diversity to sound, how streaming audio is creating a generation gap and what that might mean for marketers, and whether the days of going to the movie theater have come and gone. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available and what the newest audio chats will be about. If you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:00) - Creating Audio for VisualsOur conversation picks up as Sherene shares her approach to combining visual and sonic elements for an effective branding strategy, and her recent work on a particularly compelling, and challenging, animation project. “It was for a nonprofit named Womankind, the opening part of this animated video I did for them was about, you know, these really devastating statistics,” she tells us. “But then it kind of changed tone... and so we needed a real shift, and no track was able to really do that in the timing that we needed. So I ended up using two different tracks and through the power of music editing we were able to very smoothly change that tone.” She tells us more about her work with diverse composers and voices, and partnering with such groups as One Percent for the Planet. “I make animated videos,” she explains, “I can't clean the carbon out of the air with my business, right? That's not what I do… but it's finally getting me to put sort of, like, you know, my money where my mouth is.”(0:08:24) - Evolution of Audio TechnologyWe look at how sound technology has moved from big and loud to small and private, and how sound has shifted from a communal to a personal experience. “You know, go back to the ‘80s when suddenly there were Walkmans and you were listening on these tiny headphones,” she says, “but then it became the tiny music file that went into the tiny headphones.” The discussion turns to where such a trend might lead, and she wonders if a theatrical experience like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice could ever be replaced by streaming media. “Sure, yeah, it fills your peripheral vision,” she says about virtual and augmented reality. “It's bigger in scope but smaller in experience, you're obviously not experiencing it communally... I feel like I'll be saying to my kids, ‘In my day we went to movie theaters.'"(0:17:02) - Power of Sound in MediaWe discuss

Hi everyone, some time ago I collaborated with Oasis pod with 2 episodes on Oasis and mental health and in those episodes I had said I would at some point take a further deep dive on this topic, especially this ethereal 'feeling' evoked by Noel's songwriting, for those who are interested in the emotional impact of Oasis' music, ethos and influence. This project is still in the works but in the meantime, in the week of world mental health day, I have put together a montage of clips taken from my podcast that pertain to Oasis and the feeling they give. All the clips you hear are from guests I interviewed for Sound Affects (fans, musicians, a music therapist and a neuroscientist), except for the final clip of me speaking which comes from ep 77 of Oasis podcast where James the host had added a backdrop of music to my words.

Today we had Sharry Edwards on the show to talk about BioAccoustic technology and how sound, frequency and vibration can impact your health. We talked about sound healing and how vibrational waves can impact cells and how cells become healthy or sick. Also Sharry Edwards talks about how she's using BioAccoustic frequency patterns to shed light on what's going on in the body. Obviously she can't use her BioAccoustic skills to diagnose anybody with a label of a disease but it can help to understand things like inflammation, nutritional deficiencies and other health challenges. We had so many people email us and ask if we could have Sharry Edwards on the show so we had to reach out to her and interview her. Imagine being able to understand nutritional deficiencies or health conditions all based on sound? I want to make it clear though that Sharry is not treating or diagnosing anybody with any condition or disease. If you feel like you have a health condition please see your medical doctor. I have to say that for legal reasons obviously. But the BioAccoustic technology is very interesting and it might be a nice adjunct to your current health and healing program. I invite you to listen to this show with Sharry Edwards about breaking the sound barriers of disease and tell us what you think! Thanks for listening and sharing! Tristan Cole is an award-winning singer-songwriter, model, actor, and dancer whose genre of music includes Country, Pop and R&B. We had a great talk about live performances versus video performances and how getting back out on the road is letting Tristan connect with his fans again on a personal level. He shares his thoughts on the current Pop/RnB genres of music and why he is so happy writing and performing country songs that trace back to his roots in North Carolina. Tristan has definitely had his share of ups and downs in the music business and it's great to hear how he is excited again with sharing his music with us. Make sure to connect with him on social media and I can attest he is responsive with his fans.ABOUT Tristan ColeAs a youth, Tristan Cole gained the attention of both Lou Pearlman, CEO of Transcontinental Records, (responsible for signing NSync, Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears) and Christian “Dio” Diodatti, CEO of Caliber Records (responsible for remixes for Michael Jackson and Mary J. Blige among others). Through business relationships with these music moguls he was able to meet and work with people like Andrea Martin (song writer/voice coach whose credits include Whitney Houston and Mariah Cary), and Glenn Douglas Packard (choreographer for artists like Britney Spears). In 2016, Tristan was featured on the hit single “Fun” on Jam Artis' (Bruno Mars' bass player) solo album which was given major praise by Bass Magazine, Bruno Mars, and Randy Jackson. He was also featured on Jacob Colon's hot summer house track, “Sweat,” which made it to the top 100 House charts for two consecutive weeks and was released by Nervous Records. After releasing four successful singles under the name Ricky Jarman and some recent rebranding, this young artist is now officially and artistically known as Tristan Cole.He has been featured in numerous venues, publications, and websites, including MTV-U, The Canadian Music Festival, Vevo, Top 40 Radio, New York Fashion Week, The Hype Magazine, DNA Magazine, on the cover of Super Models SA magazine, Kokane Music Blog, ThisIs50.com, Black Dragon Live, Jamsphere, on the cover of Get Out Magazine, Adelente Magazine, and The Carolina Music Festival to name a few.Tristan Cole's list of accolades includes winning Best Male R&B Artist of the Year at the Carolina Music Awards and Best Male Vocalist for the Odyssey Night Life Awards. This week, photographer Martyn Goddard takes us through his Jam archives. For avid consumers of Jam vinyl in the late seventies and early eighties, Martyn Goddard's photographs need little introduction. His images appear on the cover of their first album, In The City, and their fifth, Sound Affects. In between, his photos ere used on the front covers of a flurry of picture sleeve singles: “All Around The World”,“The Modern World”, “News of The World”, “David Watts/ ‘A' Bomb in Wardour Street”, “Down in the Tube Station at Midnight”, and finally “Strange Town”. We dive into his personal recollections, and his shoot journals, where he recorded the dates of his studio sessions - and hear a bunch of memories from working with The Jam. Las canciones incluidas:"Pretty Green", The Jam"Lazy Sunday Afternoon", The Small Faces"Finding my way", Rush"Dedicate Follower of Fashion", The Kinks"Carnaby Street", The Jam"D'You Know What I Mean", Oasis"Wall Of Glass", Liam Gallagher See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The weather topics in this podcast include Chicago's first encounter with 80° in 6 months (forecasted), the record warmth in Rapid city, the current winter storm warning for Rapid city. The snow/warmth for Scottsbluff Nebraska, severe thunderstorms in Minneapolis, strong thunderstorms in Duluth Minnesota, strong thunderstorms in North Platte Nebraska, a brief mention of possible 90° heat in North Platte, possible 100° heat in Yuma Arizona, possible 99•+ heat for Tirat Tzvi Israel, brief mention of record snow in Alaska, brief mention of the cold pouring into Europe that is making weather headlines, a brief mention of the volcano in Iceland which as of today has reached a new level of intensity, the slow moving storm system over the Midwest, the storm system off the East Coast which will likely cut the warmth short for many, the 3 storm systems effecting Chicago the next 7 days and all will be producing precipitation. There are other topics discussed in this podcast as well including the forecasting of thundrsnow for some areas along with the "bud bursting" warmth headed for Chicago. There are other topics discussed as well...This podcast has the following Hebrew (ish) words "shita"(opinion), "shitas" (opinions), Tzeis Hacochavim" (The time in the evening when 3 medium stars are visible when away from all city light), "shkia" (sunset), "chidush" (novelty)(shocking, a real shocker), "Hashem" (The One creater of heaven and earth and...), "Shabbos" (the Sabbath) and "madreiga" (level). There is also a tiny bit of Hebrew in some of the background music. In regards to that, you will understand the podcast BETTER if you don't know the translation. The tiny bit of Hebrew in the background sound effects are a distraction from the podcast with the exception of "Hashem" (as translated above, there is also more of a translation within the song that is being played). This podcast also mentions Tom Skilling (as do many of my podcasts). He is chief Meteorologist for Wgn station in Chicago Illinois. He started his career at the young age of 14 years old without any degrees 50+ years ago (that's what I read). He is very knowledgeable in many areas including climate and a top expert on weather forecasting. He is also an excellent explainer of weather and has an enormous amount of experience when dealing with Chicago weather (he's also a nice person). The Chicago Tribune has an amazing weather section and he is at the very least a very significant part of this. I like him a lot and sometimes jokingly refer to him as "Rabeinu (our teacher) Tom" (an extremely great spiritual leader and awesome commentary on the Talmud) (lehavdil: speration. Note: It is customary for Orthodox Jews to say "lehavdil" when comparing "apples to oranges" especially when the comparisons being made are going from spiritual purity to other things) Interestingly enough the opinion of Rabeinu Tom (the real one, not Mr. Skiling) perhaps should have been mentioned in this podcast in regards to what his opinion is in regards to sunset. This podcast has a couple of slips with my words. I think from the context it can be figured out what I'm saying. At one point I said the word "depends" when it should have been "determined". In addition in regards to the storm system developing in Kansas on Tuesday, I said that it's possible it's the same storm as the one which developed in Idaho on Monday (I just didn't/don't know). This means that the storm would develop in Idaho and then move to Kansas (and strengthen) and then move Northeast through the Midwest. On this podcast I made it sound like the storm would first develop in Kansas and then move to Nebraska. Also, in the very begining I said the word "stuff" after the word "amazing" but I meant to say "things".Also, I mention 3 storm systems which would affect the Midwest in the next 7 days, but I didn't specify which 3 storms they were, but I did speak about a storm system on the east coast, a storm system in Idaho and one in Kansas. These are not the storms that will be affecting the Chicago area. Only the one from Kansas will be affecting Chicago. The 2 additional systems affecting Chicago were not mentioned by place, only by time. This means the 2nd system will affect Chicago Friday night/Saturday and the 3rd early next week. The first system will affect Chicago Wednesday and Wednesday night with an emphasis on Wednesday night.

Welcome back to Sound Affects podcast, after a long hiatus during which time we've been in a 6-month lockdown/post-lockdown pandemic. For this episode, I speak to Steve Lamacq, aka Lammo – BBC radio DJ for BBC 6 Music, former NME journalist and co-host of BBC Radio 1 Evening Session with Jo Whiley, founder of Deceptive Records (Elastica, Placebo, Idelwild), and author of Going Deaf for a Living. He famously interviewed Richey Edwards of Manic Street Preachers in the early 90s, resulting in one of the most iconic and sobering NME images of all time. I wanted to speak to Steve in more depth about this experience and other complex encounters that he documents in his book. Here are the show notes for Episode 2 “Sound Affects We had some follow up items. As you can see we do actually pay attention to feedback and follow it up when we can. So keep sending it in. Marna talked about the new SDSF panels and their commands' responses being cut off. Use ULOG to see the whole response. BTW - for commands in z/OSMF there is a box for the entire command response you can scroll through. Martin took IBMer Dave Griffiths' advice and experimented with a Markdown processor written in java. You can find the java jar (markdown4j) he used here. Mainframe Our “Mainframe” topic is about blocking the IBM Ported Tools product for ordering with z/OS V2.2. You don't need IBM Ported Tools V1.3 product with z/OS V2.2 since the same functions are contained in the operating system now at either the same or higher level. For z/OS V2.2 contents look here, searching in the page for “OpenSSH” or “Apache”. Performance Our “Performance” topic is about Coupling Facility Link Latency, which sounds like a boring topic. It actually has its own share of thrills and spills. Topics Under “Topics” we discussed the Android app “Smart Maps Offline”. This handy tool can save you mobile data costs if you are directionally challenged. Maps are free for Android, but might cost for Apple's version of this app. Good bits were: personal pins can be added, common points (hotels, restaurants, transportation) is already marked, good performance, small download map size. Things we'd like to see improved: can't give you directions to somewhere, and maps are in the local language only. See your app store for downloading this handy tool. One such place is here. Can people actually become addicted to cheese? This episode begins with some surprising information how why people love cheese so much.I’m sure you have, at some point in your life, relied on your “gut instinct.” You made a decision that just felt right at that moment. And while that may be fine for small decisions – is it really smart to use your gut to make the big decisions? After all – what exactly is your gut? Well, Mary Ellen O’Toole, author of Dangerous Instincts (https://amzn.to/2OAbkE5), is a former FBI profiler who has seen plenty of people get in trouble because the “went with their gut.” If you want to keep you and your family safe – you should hear what she has to say.Sound is all around you. So what is it doing to your health? Probably more than you realize. My guest, Alex Doman is co-author of Healing at the Speed of Sound (https://amzn.to/318yyUq) and he will explain what impact sound and noise have on you and how to protect yourself. And the next time your “Check Engine” light comes on, you may not want to rush up to your mechanic as a first course of action. You can easily figure out what’s wrong yourself. I’ll explain how to do it – and why it is such a good idea that can save you time, money and a lot of hassle. This Week's Sponsors--Airbnb.To learn more about being an Airbnb host visitwww.Airbnb.com/host

Hippie Haven Podcast: How To Live An Ethical + Eco-Friendly Lifestyle
Every Wednesday on the Hippie Haven podcast, learn how to live harmoniously with yourself, others & the planet. We talk about all things hippie, including eating vegan, reducing your trash, starting an ethical business, eco-activism, gardening, beekeeping, tiny house living, and so much more. Today's guest is Sharon Carne, creator of Sound Wellness, a holistic modality that uses techniques based on sound and music to bring your body, mind, emotions, and spirit back into harmony to reduce stress, allow natural healing and prevent illness. In 2020 the World Health Organization estimates that 75% of deaths around the world will be due to chronic illnesses and stress is a major factor in chronic illnesses. In fact, the World Health Organization declared stress to be the health epidemic of the 21st century as eco anxiety or anxiety around the existing climate crisis and future survival of the human race. As that grows, I want to talk more about ways that we can all reduce a little stress in our day to day lives. So Sharon is here to share her tips related to sound healing based on a program that she originally developed for the integrated health institute at the Mount Royal University in Canada and his since presented to the Canadian Mental Health Commission, the Alberta Health region conference on chronic disease management, the Manitoba Health region, and the national health work and wellness conference in Quebec plus many others. The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Formerly a translator for the US Navy, Callee was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector in 2017 following an episode of severe depression & alcoholism fueled by not living in alignment with her core values. That same year, at age 23, she started Bestowed Essentials, a handmade line of eco-friendly beauty & home products that are now stocked in over 100 stores around the US & Canada. Callee began hosting this free podcast in August 2018, as well as speaking at events and teaching educational workshops across the country, as part of her life mission to arm you with the knowledge & tools you need to spark positive change in your community. In December 2019, she opened The Hippie Haven in Rapid City, South Dakota - a zero waste retail store & community space with a little free library - the first of its kind in the state. She’ll be opening a second Hippie Haven in Salem, Oregon in Feb 2021. In this episode of Inside Voice, Voice Summit programming and content director, Janice Mandel, speaks with Steve Keller, the Sonic Strategy Director for Pandora, the largest streaming music platform in the US. Prior to joining Pandora, Steve was the founder and CEO of iV, an audio consultancy based in Nashville that specialized in the strategy, content, research and management necessary for successful audio branding initiatives. What does someone with over 25 years of experience in the music industry and a BA in Psychology do when his heart says sonic expression and his head seeks out data? Like an alchemist, he blends science and art to explore how sound affects mood and behavior. When it all works, he says, it seems like magic. Here's just a preview of what you'll hear from Steve as he takes the main stage at VOICE Summit this July. Don't miss his panels though -- that's where the inside scoop on what Pandora's up to is bound to come up.

Las canciones incluidas:“Pretty Green”, The Jam"Lazy Sunday Afternoon", The Small Faces"Finding my way", Rush"Dedicate Follower of Fashion", The Kinks“Carnaby Street”, The Jam"D'You Know What I Mean", Oasis"Wall Of Glass", Liam Gallagher

This week's show is with Kristian Verde Haganes, Kristian is a dedicated father and husband, a licensed physiotherapist and certified CLARITY coach working within the public health service in Sandefjord, Norway. As the project manager of a Healthy Life Center, Kristian supports people at risk of developing non infectious chronic disease overcome their limitations and blossom. He is passionate about the science of personal transformation, and about how to arrange the contingencies of reinforcement responsible for it. In today's show we spoke about the way our own behaviour is shaped and is constantly developing as a person engages in an environment. And also how we affect each other as we speak but maybe more importantly how we affect ourselves as we speak. What you'll learn from this episode: Listening to our own sound allows us to become more aware of our own sound and also how it affects us. Our internal chatter (i.e. our thinking) is our sound turned right down - we have more of that chatter when we've been exposed to - what Kristian calls - noxious verbal behaviour, and feel unable to speak our sound aloud. When we engage in 'sound verbal behaviour' with others, we enjoy it, its reinforced and we therefore do more of it. This digital age is the worst time for us to express ourselves in writing - more disconnected, more unaware of our sound and how it affects us and others.
