COMICS ROT YOUR BRAIN! is a deep dive into ‘80s comics (plus a few notable exceptions). In this weekly podcast, screenwriters Chris Derrick (STAR TREK: PICARD) and Steven Bagatourian (AMERICAN GUN) discuss their favorite books, runs, and creators from the Bronze Age.• EPISODE 2: This week, Chris and Steven explore the first couple issues of Don McGregor and Paul Gulacy's SABRE, published by Eclipse Comics in 1982. A groundbreaking series that is a surreal, post-apocalyptic spectacle.SHOW NOTES:00:52 - Some background info on the storyline for SABRE — the first “graphic album” for the direct market — a sci-fi story set in the “distant future of 2,018” lol.4:40 - Don McGregor's delightfully ornery introductory essay to the Image reprint of SABRE.14:55 - The “throw you in the deep end”-style storytelling of SABRE — in media res, wildly expository and dense dialogue, the art of melodrama — all of it in service of casting a rather immersive spell. 18:33 - Soliloquies in Shakespeare and SABRE — “thought balloons” spoken aloud, and the eternal battle to believe in a smart audience that wants to be challenged. 23:14 - “Pure comics!” A post-apocalyptic ghost of an amusement park and the bizarre evildoer known as Grouse — a rapscallion refugee from an animated film/Nazi cat-rat… The high weirdness of stories built specifically for comics.25:34 - The gloriously purple prose of Don McGregor and how Paul Gulacy's stunning artwork is at risk of being drowned under a roaring river of words.41:35 - Paul Gulacy in 1978 was merely 25 years old, and yet creating impressively lovely, Steranko-influenced art with a bizarre plasticine rigidity all its own.43:14 - Paul Gulacy never read “How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way” …and that's absolutely not a problem!47:13 - Don McGregor making life Hell for Paul Gulacy — “Draw me a giant train crash and a massive gun battle with dozens of characters... on horseback!”57:56 - Lord help us, we attempt to describe the psychedelic visual world of SABRE and its wild cast of characters.1:06:14 - The inconcievable notion of releasing a comic book as narratively dense as SABRE in the ADD world of today.1:12:53 - SABRE: THE EARLY FUTURE YEARS - a SABRE relaunch from Don McGregor …and Trevor Von Eeden?!! The Kickstarter that almost was.…01:19:26 - SABRE is a story about battling conformity and this also appeared to be one of Don McGregor's chief battles in life.1:23:52 - The Brit+ Visit ComicsRotYourBrain.com to get a look at some of the fantastic art discussed in our episodes!+ We appreciate your support of the show via Patreon: ComicsRotYourBrain+ Join us! COMICS ROT YOUR BRAIN! is a deep dive into ‘80s comics (plus a few noteworthy exceptions). In this weekly podcast, screenwriters Chris Derrick (STAR TREK: PICARD) and Steven Bagatourian (AMERICAN GUN) discuss their favorite books, runs, and creators from the Bronze Age.• EPISODE 1: Steven and Chris embark on the paradigm-shattering psychedelic trip that is the first seven issues of THRILLER — published by DC Comics in 1983 — and find themselves awestruck in its wake. One thing is certain: Trevor Von Eeden is a goddamn genius.SHOW NOTES0:05 - Discussing our first exposure to this "unsung-shock-your-brain" idea bomb of a comic.9:07 - An attempt to summarize our unwieldy pulp beast of a story, with an assist from Robert Loren Fleming, as well as discursive detours into THE SHADOW, DOC SAVAGE, and the great Richard Pryor.18:04 - Unconventional pacing in THRILLER and the powerful "delayed cumulative impact" of its story rhythms.23:20 - Novel panel compositions ("an obscene amount of panels!"), storytelling innovations, and the downright psychedelic properties of THRILLER. “…an incredible sense of discovery... Trevor Von Eden is literally inventing new storytelling mechanics on every page." "It's impossible for us to convey verbally how inventive this guy was."39:27 - TVE's atypical, kinetic, emotionally resonant approach to inking. "...no one was finishing their work with this roughness and gestural vitality... Von Eeden is all about the emotion..." With detours into the styles of Alex Toth, Neal Adams, and David Mazzuchelli.44:23 - Drawing characters "acting" without masks in non-superhero comics. 50:09 - Innovation in art, from Michaelangelo to manga, Frank Miller to Steven Spielberg, and how David Mazzuchelli's relatively small body of work that casts a huge shadow.1:30:17 - Dick Giordano's inking of TVE plus TVE being uniquely unrecognized for being such an absolute friggin' genius.1:37:17 - Celebrating the vibrant and unique voice of Robert Loren Fleming — way ahead of his time in his decompressed approach to comic book storytelling, as well as the bold originality of his ideas.1:38:45 - Reading from Heidi MacDonald's amazingly astute, contemporaneous review of THRILLER from THE COMICS JOURNAL #93.1:47 - Discussing the outrageous letter column (mis)behavior of THRILLER's so-called editor, Alan Gold.1:49:34 - Back to Heidi MacDonald's absurdly prescient review, praising the overarching ambition,+ Visit ComicsRotYourBrain.com to get a look at some of the fantastic art discussed in our episodes!+ We appreciate your support of the show via Patreon: ComicsRotYourBrain+ Join us! The other Black Lightning! In his final issue of Black Lightning, Tony Isabella executes a meta-textual criticism of DC's business practices. Joining him for the fun is Black Lightning co-creator Trevor Von Eeden and inker Vince Colletta.
Tim, AJ, and Sara discuss Batman and the Outsiders #21 from 1985, a very special issue featuring 3 solo stories for Katana, Geo-Force, and Black Lightning. Each one-and-done story was written by Mike W Barr, colored by Adrienne Roy, and with a different art team for each story, notably Jerome K Moore, Trevor Von Eeden, and Ron Randall. There's a lot of fun things to say about these short stories!

Welcome to Episode 2 of Batman Books are Burning in Hell, in which regular hosts Tucker Stone and Matt Seneca are joined by Benjamin Marra for a discussion of Batman: Venom! If Marra needs an introduction you're living wrong - the cartoonist behind Night Business, Terror Assaulter O.M.W.O.T., American Blood and What We Mean By Yesterday is one of the most accomplished artists currently making comics, full stop. Marra's works are vital entries in the category of American pulp, embracing his medium's history of disrepute while avoiding nostalgia with their purity of execution and commitment to extremity. Venom, published in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #16-20 (1991), is Denny O'Neil, Trevor Von Eeden, Russ Braun, and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez's epic saga of a Batman whose commitment to workout gains ends in tragedy, madness, and punching a great white shark in the face. LISTEN UP!
Wes is joined by award-winning comic book editor Joe Corallo and life-long reader Eric Breen to discuss a DC Comics game changer, Black Lightning. Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden (only 17 years old at the time) orchestrate one of the best comic book origin stories of the Bronze Age in Black Lightning. Jefferson Pierce was unlike any superhero DC Comics readers had seen at the time. A proud black teacher who proudly represented his neighborhood and race who could fight the battles even Superman couldn't handle. Black Lightning #1-8 is an action-packed origin unlike any other with cameos from DC heavy hitters like Superman, Jimmy Olsen and Talia Al Ghul. With more twists and turns than you can count and some of the best cliffhangers in comic history. Join Wes, Eric and Joe as the review an instant classic of its time, Tony Isabella's Black Lightning. We Back! Britney, Nate, and Clement get together to reflect on Season 2, look ahead to Season 3, and give their thoughts on the announcement that "Black Lightning" will be a part of the "Crisis On Infinite Earths" crossover! All that and more on the latest episode of the Black Lightning Podcast! Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a man with many faces. He is a former Olympic athlete, respected educator and a father of two. He is also Black Lightning, superpowered protector of the fictional city of Freeland with the ability to sense and harness electricity. Jefferson is not the only one with powers and multiple faces. His oldest daughter, Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams) is a medical student, health clinic volunteer and dedicated social activist. She is also the super hero known as Thunder who possesses the ability to drastically increase her density, giving her invulnerability and super strength for as long as she can hold her breath. Finally, Jefferson’s youngest daughter, Jennifer Pierce (China Anne McClain), is a fiery teen who inherited her father’s athletic gifts but not his desire to be an athlete. Jennifer also inherited super powers. Her body generates pure electrical energy and she possesses the potential to be more powerful than Anissa or Jefferson and is known as Lightning. Lynn Stewart (Christine Adams) is Jefferson’s ex-wife but they are still very much in love in addition to sharing the load as co-parents. She’s also an expert in metahuman medicine. Together, the Pierce family faces the challenges of a declined urban community, including a menacing gang that calls itself The 100 and infamous gangster, Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III). Worse, Freeland has been plagued by government-sponsored experiments and drug trafficking that have created metahumans and addicts while making Freeland a target of a dangerous foreign power, Markovia. Fortunately, the family has allies in their fight, Jefferson’s surrogate father and a former covert superspy, Peter Gambi (James Remar), as well as Jefferson’s friend and neighbor, the committed and scrupulously honest Deputy Police Chief Henderson (Damon Gupton). Based on the characters from DC, BLACK LIGHTNING is from Berlanti Productions and Akil Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash”), Salim Akil & Mara Brock Akil (“Being Mary Jane,” “The Game,” “Girlfriends”), Charles D. Holland (“JAG”) and Sarah Schechter (“Arrow,” “The Flash”). The Black Lightning character was created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden.” Official Website: BlackLightningPodcast.com Social Media: Facebook – @BL_Podcast – Instagram Subscribe: Apple Podcasts – Stitcher Radio – YouTube – DC TV Podcasts – Google Play – iHeartRadio Contact Us: BlackLightningPodcast@gmail.com

Issue 38: This issue focuses on the electrifying metahuman, Black Lightning CBN Season 4 | Issue 38 | Black Lightning *Use the hashtag #CBNpod when listening to this episode Black Lightning is a superhero in DC Comics. He was created by writer Tony Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden, first appearing in Black Lightning # 1 (April 1977) during the Bronze Age of Comic Books. He is a metahuman; Born Jefferson Pierce, he grew up in the disreputable Southside section of Metropolis known as Suicide Slum. He is capable of electrical manipulation and generation. Black Lightning is DC Comics' first African American superhero and the first to star in their own series for the DC imprint. The original candidate for DC Comics' first headlining black superhero was a character called the Black Bomber, a white racist who would turn into a black superhero under stress, but would later be described by comics historian Don Markstein as "an insult to practically everybody with any point of view at all." When the editor who had approved the Black Bomber left the company before the character had seen print, Tony Isabella (whose previous writing experience included Luke Cage, a black Marvel Comics superhero with his own title) was asked to salvage the character. Isabella managed to convince editors to instead use his Black Lightning character which he had been working on for some time, mentioning that his characters along the way were merely stepping stones.
