In Episode 31 of our podcast, we sit down with Tyrone Davis, a dedicated 27-year veteran in law enforcement, to understand his remarkable journey from the streets of New York City to his current role as Assistant Chief for the Seattle Police Department. Tyrone shares his upbringing, born to parents from the Virgin Islands and his move to Houston at the tender age of 12, eventually settling in Washington. His journey includes an unforgettable encounter with the police when he was pulled over by a black DPS officer while cruising in a 1980s Ford Mustang. Surprisingly, Tyrone had no prior experience with law enforcement and initially aspired to become an attorney or prosecutor. Throughout the episode, we explore Tyrone's impressive career trajectory. Tyrone candidly discusses the challenges he faces today, including navigating settlement agreements and securing budgets for his department. Tyrone's passion for community building and 21st Century Policing shines through as he talks about initiatives such as National Night Out in Seattle. He offers insights into the complexities of policing, acknowledging the contradictions between aspirations and realities. We also explore the vital topic of keeping a motivated and engaged team in the demanding world of law enforcement. Tyrone shares his strategies for keeping his team informed, involved, and valued, even in the face of challenges. He opens up about his own experiences with work-life balance and the importance of understanding and accommodating the needs of his personnel. Diversity and inclusion, grooming standards, and the imperative of a forward-thinking culture shift within law enforcement are all part of this enriching conversation with Tyrone Davis. You can connect with Tyrone on LinkedIn for more insights and updates on his journey. #BlackLawEnforcement #Mentorship #Podcast #developthepolice #leofirstpodcast #WorkLifeBalance

There's a very thin line between Southern Soul and the blues. Southern Soul has managed to move the genre forward in unexpected ways, updating the sound while keeping true to the rhythms, cadences and feels of traditional blues. Cooki B and Tonya explore some of the sounds of southern soul from old school players like Tyrone Davis and Sir Charles to the new school like J Wonn and Calvin Richardson. Then they're joined by special guest Courtney Little - Mr. "Cougar Hunter" himself. The man behind the the unexpected viral hit. It was a time! Have a listen.

Masculinity, Mental Health, and Body Image for Black Men Welcome back to Asking for Myself, where I ask all the questions you're too afraid to. Today we're talking all things men and mental health. In this episode, I am joined by investor, community builder, and mental health advocate, Rollins Stallworth III, and Broadway actor, sexuality educator, and phenomenal dancer slash chef, Tyrone Davis Jr. And you know I've got a lot of questions. Such as? How does sexual liberation have an impact on mental health? What is the connection between our sexuality and mental health? What aspects of the “male experience” prevent men from receiving help when they need it? Is “toxic masculinity” a constructive or inclusive term to invite men into the conversation? Is there space to hold compassion for incels while holding them accountable? How can we approach male aggression and violence with an empathetic lens? How has the myth of “doing it alone” played a role in your life and your relationship with masculinity? How do we create vulnerable spaces and community for men to talk to each other? How do we build relationships between straight men and queer men? What barriers exist to cultivating these relationships? What body image insecurities have you had to overcome or work through? How has this been impacted by your identity and experience as an athlete/actor? What stereotypes exist for Black men are harmful (or perhaps, advantageous)? How do you prevent burnout while advocating for against oppressive systems that personally harm you (protesting as a Black man)? As broadcast January 28, 2022 with plenty of heartache to throw in for your podcast bust-up. Just a smattering of new cuts out the past week or so in the funk and soul corner of the music matrix, mostly dealing with breakups and relationships, so we decided to let it all out with a breakup- and makeup-focused first hour for this week's Sampled sampler. Very strong new tunes and some big announcements of forthcoming albums though, with Lee Fields and Mamas Gun both announcing upcoming LP's for 2022 with their latest singles. Dan Lloyd then joins us once again for our weekly AMPED feature, with lots of new music out this week in the rock realm. Mainly feeling vindicated that the Yard Act album was indeed as good as advertised, we also checked out the latest from Pinegrove, Franz Ferdinand, Guerilla Toss, and many other worthy artists during the hour, with a tribute to the dearly departed but always controversial and aloof in life and death Meatloaf to close.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Lyn Collins – Think (About It)Kelly Finnigan – Since I Don't Have You AnymoreTyrone Davis – Can I Change My MindBobby Oroza – Your Love Is Too ColdTeddy Grossman – Giving UpFerris & Sylvester – Golden Part II (30:39)Durand Jones & The Indications – Giving UpLee Fields – Ordinary LivesMamas Gun – Looking for MosesBen L'Oncle Soul – StayOV Wright – Let's Straighten It OutThe Funkees – Baby I Need YouKOKOROKO – Carry Me Home Part III (63:33)Eels – The MagicYard Act – Dead HorseGhost – Call Me Little SunshineGuerilla Toss – Cannibal CapitalFranz Ferdinand – CuriousFoo Fighters – Fraggle Rock Rock Part IV (94:47)Jethro Tull – The Zealot GeneStereophonics – ForeverHot Water Music – Collect Your Things and RunPinegrove – RespirateMeat Loaf – Paradise By the Dashboard Light

There used to be a monthly column in Reader's Digest magazine -- of which one number featured a photo of John Zahl on the back cover -- that was entitled "Laughter Is the Best Medicine". It was a fairly "middle-brow" column, but its heart was in the right place. This new podcast explores the element of humor in resourcing one's detachment from the "boxing ring" of everyday life. (Did you wince at that 'English' use of "resource" as a verb?) I want to say that when you "lose your life and thereby gain it back" -- in the New Testament view of the world -- humor takes on an almost crucial role in smoothing the uncomfortable edges of withdrawal. Whuh? When I was sick in the hospital recently, just about all one's previous attachments -- excepting, vividly, Mary, our sons, and their children -- faded away. Like, almost instantly. And when that happens to you, it kind of stays with you. Thus humor, a la Tyrone Davis' impossible-to-make-sense-of lyric in "Something You've Got", becomes, well, important. The song's impermeable confusion about who is being addressed and to what end -- albeit in the context of a great 'Soul' arrangement -- is a matchless "Song Without End". I mean, I've studied this song for years and still can't tell you whether it's a dialogue between two people concerning a third person, or a trialogue with three persons in the room. The alternating pronouns stump me every time. Anyway, think for a minute about your own sense of humor. When do you find yourself losing it -- your sense of humor, I mean -- and what always works to (re-) "tickle your funny bone". You tell me. The cast ends with another Tyrone Davis track -- there are many contagious songs by this wonderful artist. "I Had It All the Time" is a perfect and delightful exercise in attractive insincerity. And where actually is the singer while he is addressing the girl? You tell me. LUV U. Podcast 324 is dedicated to Jim McNeely and Derek Nelson. P.S. One small correction: When I refer in the cast to Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, I really mean Battle in Outer Space (1961).

The songwriter and producer of modern soul music known as Darnell Da'Bachelor have released his latest official single, “Seduction.” The single has been bundled with a second original Darnell Da'Bachelor track, “Obama,” It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry. The generous Tyrone Davis Jr talks with us this week. Tyrone takes a second to talk us through his experience protesting over the weekend. He's a remarkable, lifelong activist and the last thing in the world he needed to do was talk with us. We were not going to have a episode this week in solidarity with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the countless lives lost to police violence, but we were honored that Tyrone was willing to chat with us and we thought giving our platform to his voice was important. He and Dan did Waitress together on Broadway and it has been inspiring to see the Waitress family come together around Tyrone. As Tyrone mentions in the episode, please consider supporting the National Lawyers Guild, which provides legal support for people who are protesting and Free Them All For Public Health which provides medical help and support to protestors who are arrested. If you're looking for more information, here are some resources we found helpful. The 1619 Project via the New Times provides a remarkable, comprehensive look at the history of racial inequality in this country. Code Switch and Left Right Center are also excellent resources for having the hard conversations with people who disagree. Also check out the book White Fragility... open your mind, change your perspective. Stand up for Black Lives. Donate for Black Lives. Protect Black Lives. All of us here at Guys Who Like Musicals unequivocally believe that Black Lives Matter.
Label: Dakar 602Year: 1968Condition: M-Price: $15.00One of Tyrone Davis' earliest singles sets the standard for all of his subsequent Funky outings with that slinky, catchy rhythm section. Mmmm! This is a copy on the black Dakar label with a rainbow band, showing the song title in all caps. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Atlantic-Atco-Cotillion Records factory sleeve. The labels grade Near Mint, and the vinyl looks almost untouched. The audio itself sounds pristine Mint! (Even better than the mp3 "snippet", which is a representative sample from our archive.)
Today, we turn the mic over to Tyrone Davis, Jr. A cast member of Off-Broadway's Witness Uganda and Broadway's Waitress, he was arrested earlier this week for peaceful protesting in support of Black Lives Matter. Tyrone Davis sort of says it all in the title track to this cast. He's "Running a Losing Race", and it sounds to me a lot like life. As a person ages, they have to watch out not to 'diss' the legitimate aspirations and engagements of people who are still, by necessity shall we say, "in the world". It's way too easy from a retired perspective to pour cold water on the hopes and dreams of younger people. The secret of wisdom, as you get older, would be to bring a perspective that embodies an accurate disillusionment with false hopes and inevitably disappointing projects while at the same offering hope in "the things that remain" (Dylan, 'When You Gonna Wake Up', 1981). To do that -- to portray life in its "True Colors" (C. Lauper, 1986) while at the same providing a better Palette -- well, such is the ambition of this podcast. I like Greg Townson a lot. A brilliant musician on his own terms, he now plays with Los Straitjackets in the persona 'Gregorio El Grande'. He is a mature adult, much younger than I; but his playlist, which seems to get richer by the week, reveals a well of inspiration that could give hope to any artist previously unrecognized or unfulfilled. Greg Townson gives me hope, which is why I talk about him at the end of the cast. Oh, and Cicely Tyson, too. LUV U
It's not just Tyrone Davis. It's almost any artist who captures the popular imagination. He or she is talking about real things, personal and individual issues, the things everyone is carrying. As opposed to abstractions and concepts. I was looking at a church news service the other day and noted that every single item featured had to do with a "social-justice" or group-identity concern. And every single item was worthy, in the sense that the concern is real and the possibility of Christian moral input hopeful. But I also thought, not many people come to church for the first time looking for group-answers or conceptual constructions. People who come to church for the first time -- and most of us, probably -- are looking for relief from personal pain. We come to God -- when we really come to Him -- for relief and help in the now! This is an empirical fact from experience. That is why Tyrone Davis speaks to me more than almost every religion news service put together. TD is right there in the arena of lovelessness, lovelornness, love abandonment and love recouping. Just listen to the opening phone call in "I Had It All the Time", which begins this cast. The man has flown 1000 miles to get something back that he lost. Love L-U-V, in other words. Tyrone Davis, and not the unspecific concerns of our momentary moment, represents the Future of Mankind. LUV U!

Johnny Rawls is a Southern Mississippi soul-blues legend who cut his teeth with ZZ Hill, and Joe Tex before becoming O.V. Wright’s band leader. After O.V.’s death he led Little Johnny Taylor’s band before launching a solo career and scoring several hit records, Red Cadillac and Lucy (Get Juicy). Rawls has been featured on many magazine covers and in 2009 was honored with a Blues Trail Marker next to Tyrone Davis and Little Milton, located at the original site of the Hi Hat Club in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He has been nominated for 14 Blues Music Awards.
This theme of the insuperability of at least one problem in your life continues to absorb me — and in the light of hope and hopefulness. I tell the story of a woman who recently attended a meeting of church executives, almost all of whom are absorbed by current issues and questions of identity in political terms. This person said to me afterwards, “It seemed like a voice spoke to me, as I listened to the virtue-signalling: ‘This form of Christianity has no future.’ ” What she meant was that there was no SAVING being proffered, nothing related to the fear of death and the questions of regret and remorse that overwhelm individuals as they grow in age. I have to agree with my friend. Then I watched an old “war horse” of a Hollywood movie entitled “The Sign of the Cross” (1936). For all its age, “The Sign of the Cross” is utterly blunt and shockingly direct concerning the human and philosophical objections to faith, faith itself, and the inter-face between faith and romantic love. The actors Frederic March and Elissa Landi pour all they’ve got into the decisive lovers’ disputes that create a highly affecting and dramatic, and to me completely plausible, conclusion. What is offered in “The Sign of the Cross” is a form of Christianity which has a very high and a very long future. Watch it. And listen to Tyrone Davis now, great “torch song” singer of Soul Music, and hear how close he is to true experience. HUGS always, PZ

Celebrity Link- The Unbridle Jamaican Reggae Icon Nicky Thomas.Nicky Thomas (born Cecil Nicholas Thomas, 30 May 1949 – 1990) was a reggae singer who enjoyed considerable chart success in Jamaica and in the United Kingdom at the start of the 1970s.Nicky Thomas was born Fruitful Vale, Portland, Jamaica. He began work as a labourer in Kingston where he worked alongside future members of the The Gladiators. His opportunity to cuts some records came when former Jiving Junior and producer Derrick Harriott wrote and produced Run Mr Nigel Run for Thomas. A huge Jamaican hit the song led to him being known as Mr Nigel for a time. He was also successful with Come Home a song from the same session. This was followed by a successful association with producer Joel Gibson better known as Joe Gibbs for whom Thomas recorded the plaintive Running Alone and Lonesome Road issued as by Cecil Thomas, as well as a version of Let It Be credited to Nicky Thomas.Thomas' collaboration with Gibbs resulted in a number of hits including Don't Touch Me, Mama's Song and God Bless The Children.Thomas and Gibbs also covered a number of well regarded R&B hits that included Tyrone Davis' Turn Back The Hands of Time and (Baby) Can I Change Your Mind and Tony Joe White's Rainy Night in Georgia. He topped the Jamaican charts in 1970 with Have A Little Faith, a record that reputedly sold 50,000 copies on its release in the UK. It failed to chart in the UK because the sales were largely through specialist music shops and not statistically counted by the official chart compilers.www.caribbeanradioshow.con www.crsradio.com 661-467-2407

BIO DJ Soulswede "He has looked Robert "Kool" Bell (Kool & The Gang) straight in the eye! He dared to ask him why they have been faking the funk in recent years. He has sat in a car with Mitch McDowell from General Kane, discussing at length the problems of crack in the young Afro-American community. He also spoke with Mitch about his passion for p-funk. He has hooked up with old school hiphoppers The Jungle Brothers at a noisy airport. He’s even given Patti Austin a huge hug in Copenhagen. He has met Chicago housers Full House and Daryll Pandy during the period when four channel mixers were the only studio equipment needed for house music." Born in 1967 and raised in southern Sweden. At the age of 8, he asked his parents for the new George McCrae single “Rock You Baby". There was something special here with a soulful voice on top of a melodic soulful groove. He then began to explore his fathers' vinyl collection. The favorites came from Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder. In 1980 he bought his own first album, “Secret Combination? by Randy Crawford. His father is a musician and has been playing organs in churches almost all his life. Maybe there is a connection. In the mid 80’s he discovered local radio stations, which were a rather new phenomena back then. But he did not appreciate the music they were playing. One day he asked one of the stations if he could run a show playing soul music and "Soul Power Radio" was born. Later "Soul Food Radio". He was doing a one hour weekly show playing soul and funk music only. The response was not overwhelming. Soul music was not the most played genre back then. He was even threatened on one of his live shows and was actually haunted by people for playing black music on the radio. He had to leave the studio through a backdoor for a period of time. During that time he also did some freelance work for The Swedish National Radio. He interviewed Robert “Kool? Bell and Dennis “DT? Thomas of Kool & The Gang. He also did his “own? interviews with artists such as Tyrone Davis, BeBe & CeCe Winans and Mitch McDowell of General Kane. It was not always an easy thing to do interviews at a young age of around 20. But the artists respected him for his big knowledge and deep love for the music. In 1991 he moved abroad to work in Spain for a couple of years, following this time he moved to Stockholm for a period. He lost close contact with the music for a couple of years during the 90’s, and is now trying to catch up with the music missing on his soulful map for that decade. Over the years he has been playing everything from raw, naked and “uncensored? hiphop to quiet storm, smooth jazz, soulful house, deep soul, and hardcore funk. But his heart is in the deeper school of soulful music. It “must? contain a strong melody. He always comes back to the fact that soul music must reflect the person behind it.
