Tonight's show on Radio Free Brooklyn features a live set by The Bullseyes. Hailing from the small Polish town of Leszno, The Bullseyes are a living testament to the global language of rock music. The duo, made up of Darek on guitar and Matt on drums, is rapidly gaining fans around the world with a style that draws equally from vintage indie and futuristic production. The result is an urgent sound that speaks directly to the experience of the modern world. After we feature their live set I'm going to ask you a very simple question - "Would you go see The Bullseyes play live if they cam to your town?" As far as I'm concerned there's only one acceptable response - "Phuque ya!" The playlist for this show didn't start out as an anti-Adam Levine playlist, all playlists are created with an eye to further highlight the music of our featured artist, but it kinda turned into one when I saw an article about how the Maroon 5 frontman infamously said “I feel like there aren't any bands any more … I feel like they're a dying breed.” (Read the Guardian article "Why bands are disappearing: "Young people aren't excited by them") Well, I'm here to tell Adam, and many others, that I'm VERY excited about a lot of music being created by female-fronted bands, by bands that include female and non-binary members, and by bands that reflect the different voices in our community. (Not to take anything away from "groups of lads with guitars" because if I've featured a band's song on a show that means I'm excited by it.) The problem, as I see it, is that the program directors and music directors at radio stations and labels have been taken over by bean counters and people who lack imagination. Thankfully at Radio Free Brooklyn we don't have to worry about that and so I've put together a playlist of music by artists, primarily duos, who genuinely excite me and who I would love to see play live, if I haven't done so already. So put your dancing shoes on and get ready to hear some fun music by SIRSY, ARXX, A Shadow of Jaguar, venray, Cadaver Dogs, Broozer, The Velveteers, Even Twice, Bad Hoo, and a stunning set by The Bullseyes. Playlist Sirsy - Death of Me ARXX - Deep A Shadow of Jaguar - Where'd It Go A Shadow of Jaguar - K.A.M. venray - Elephant Cadäver Dögs - Feel the Heat Anmls - Instrumental The Bullseyes - Yet There's You (RFB Live!) When not dealing with the restrictions of Covid-19 The Rodent Hour features interviews with independent musicians along with a curated playlist of music from Brooklyn and beyond the borough. I've conducted interviews with over 240 unique artists from places such as Detroit (MI), Durham (NC), Nashville (TN), Scranton (PA), Philadelphia (PA), Atlanta (GA), Denver (CO), Petersburg (IN), Portland (OR), London (UK), Pamplona (ES), Toronto (ON), Halifax (NS), Stockholm (SE), Dublin, (IE), Glasgow (SCT), Perth (AU) and, of course, New York City.

Episode 034 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes vocalist KIM DAWSON to the show for an important discussion. A chat as necessary as it is enlightening, with memories uncomfortable and messages inspiring. Kim Dawson is currently a solo artist on Eddie Roberts' label Color Red, a co-frontwoman of Roberts' quasi-supergroup Matador Soul Sounds, a go-to singer for any number of collectives, tribute shows, sit-ins and such. Most recently she released the R&B single "Try" with Wil Blades, and sings her heart out on "Good Thang" with Crushed Velvet & the Velveteers, on Alan Evans' own Vintage League Music. However, I invited her on the podcast to discuss important matters beyond her fantastic performances and collaborations. KIM DAWSON - intro @ 11:30, interview @ 16:00 *apologize for any minor sound issues or clicks during the interview... trust I did my best to minimize the annoyance* Kim has been a presence within the jam/funk music community for a long time, and a mainstay on the Front Rage scene. She's an educator with Swallow Hill Music, where she works with aspiring young singers; she also mentors young women of color in the Denver metro area. Ms. Dawson was kind enough to give us an hour and a half of the medicine we need, in a wide ranging discussion of her journey as a Black American, a female of color in the performing arts, Black music heritage in the jam scene, her own experiences as a youth and just exactly the moment when she really learned what time it was with race in America. We get a peek into her reality as it pertains to intermarriage, her current situation in Denver juxtaposed with growing up in Oklahoma, and so much more. But of course, we kick things off talkin' music... because, well, that's still how we do. Thanks to the divine Kim Dawson for her gracious time & the vibe! Please listen to her remarkable patience, and compassion in speaking to the people and our greater music community from her heart, as we so dearly need it. Boulder rockers The Velveteers released their self-titled debut EP this week. The sibling duo of singer/guitarist Demi and drummer John Demitro gained a large following last year: They played to packed houses at the 2017 Westword Music Showcase and Underground Music Showcase, and Westword readers voted them Colorado's "Best Rock Band" for their high-octane blend of punk and garage rock. The Velveteers stopped into the CPR Performance Studio to play four songs with additional drumming from Noah Shomberg of The Yawpers. They also spoke with Alisha Sweeney about their first international tour, the challenges of being a young rock band in Boulder and how the film "Edward Scissorhands" influenced the new EP.
