Our host, Kosta Lucas speaks with Dr Katie Attwell, Senior Lecturer in the School of Social Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA). Dr Attwell leads the large interdisciplinary research project “Coronavax: Preparing Community and Government” with colleagues from UWA and Telethon Kids Institute. ‘Vax' was the Oxford word of the year in 2021, with ‘Strollout' being the word of the year in Australia according to the Macquarie Dictionary. The beginning of 2022 then became all about mandates, vaccine mandates being the main flashpoint of public contention. But do any of us actually really know what the term “mandate' really means? We've seen the terms “mask mandate”, “vaccine mandate” and even policy mandate, applied to different COVID responses and settings. But what is a mandate really designed to do, how has it been implemented and is it actually effective as a lever of social policy implementation?

Dr Ryan Stafford (PhD) , Adjunct Research Fellow at University of Western Australia, University of Queensland Doctor of Philosophy, The University of Queensland Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, University of Saskatchewa, Canada Dr Ryan Stafford is passionate research scientist, with a background in Exercise Physiology and collaborates with global leading researchers in men's health. Specifically, Ryan pioneered real-time ultrasound (RTUS) imaging in the assessment of male pelvic floor function in men undergoing surgery for prostate cancer, and hence changed the way the physiotherapists teach patients how to perform PFM training correctly to minimise urinary incontinence.   Today, Ryan continues to lead research at the University of Queensland (UQ) and has recently joined forces with Dr Jo (Milios) at The University of Western Australia (UWA) investigating male patients undergoing radiation therapies for prostate cancer and also at male pelvic pain patients. A new focus is on erectile dysfunction and this includes males with any form of PFM dysfunction with doppler studies of penile blood flow being examined. Also sometimes these muscles can be tight, known as ‘hypertonicity'' and other times they can be weak, known as ‘hypotonicity''. So for some men strength training is not the best program , but relaxation or PFM ‘down-training'' is the key.   Please join Dr Jo as she brings up the great, the humble Dr Ryan Stafford. From Canada to you!   Ps. In recent COVID times, research grants are tougher to succeed, with less $$$ available in the total health purse, so currently Dr JO & Ryan are doing this research in a voluntary fashion. Natasha Coutts is a doctoral candidate with the School of Human Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA), a postgraduate fellow with UWA's Africa Research & Engagement Centre, and a research affiliate of the Center of Excellence in Biology and Natural Resource Management at the University of Rwanda. Her research takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding how habitat fragmentation can affect the gut microbiome of eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) throughout Rwanda by drawing on methods and knowledge from fields such as socioecology, conservation biology, microbiology, population genetics, and bioinformatics. Her project includes two habituated and one semi-habituated chimpanzee communities:  one in an undisturbed, continuous habitat and two in small, degraded forest fragments. These field sites represent all locations in Rwanda where chimpanzees currently remain, thereby providing a country-wide perspective on the processes under investigation. From 2018 - 2019 Natasha  was in the field collecting dietary and social data in conjunction with faecal samples and habitat surveys to allow her to identify not only the composition of the chimpanzee's gut microbial communities, but also the potential mechanisms by which habitat fragmentation can act upon it. With more and more evidence linking the gut microbiome to health, this research is an important piece of the puzzle in understanding how changes in habitat can influence the long-term health and viability of endangered chimp populations. Ultimately she hopes her work will make a meaningful contribution to the conservation of chimpanzees by informing management decisions that promote preserving intact habitats and reconnecting isolated fragments. Natasha holds a Bachelor of Biological Science (Advanced) from La Trobe University and a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Anatomy & Human Biology from UWA. In addition to her PhD research, Natasha is also the Africa Programs & Conservation Campaigns Manager with the Jane Goodall Institute Australia. In this role she oversees the administration and implementation of the projects JGIA supports including The Girls Empowerment Project in Uganda, Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, and Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in Republic of Congo. In our conversation, we talk about habitat fragmentation, developing a chimpanzee superhighway, and how empowering girls can lead to better economic, social, and ecological outcomes. The University of Western Australia (UWA) formally announced its decision to close the UWA Publishing (UWAP). The university's deputy vice-chancellor for global partnerships announced the decision through a memo. According to the memo, the university made the decision because the publishing house's activities are not in sync with the university's goals and strategies, which focus on providing an open-access digital archive in the long run. The operations of the publishing house stopped in the latter part of this year. Terri-ann White, director of the UWAP, did not expect the university's decision. According to her, the open-access digital archive was meant to support, but not replace, the UWAP. White was also concerned that the memo did not state the university's action plan in connection to UWAP's activities and functions, as well as the possible employment termination of five UWAP staff, including White herself. Despite the decision, the university has issued a statement, saying that books currently in production will still be published. As reports about the UWAP's impending closure broke, writer Melinda Smith started a petition to revoke the decision. According to her, the UWAP is an important aspect of Australia's culture, and closing it would be a great loss for the country's literary community. Other associations have also called for the university to reverse its decision. The Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL) said that closing down the UWAP can tarnish the university's reputation. Similarly, the Small Press Network (SPN), an organization representing independent publishers in Australia and New Zealand, added that the UWAP could reach more readers better than open-access digital archives ever could.

The geopolitics of the Asia-Pacific, or the Indo-Pacific, as the Trump Administration has referred to the Asia-Pacific is a critical aspect of international politics and today’s global order. This podcast very fortunately tackles the politics of the region with one of the true experts there, Professor Mark Beeson of the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth Australia. In the podcast we have the opportunity to review the history of the ASEAN which today includes ten countries in Southeast Asia. This summit has been ongoing since 1967 and most recently ASEAN leaders gathered in Singapore for the 32nd Summit. What has the ASEAN accomplished over this summit’s existence? What are its relations with the two great powers in the region – China and the United States? Can ASEAN be an actor in the continuing tensions of the South China Sea? Beyond just the two great powers what are, and should be, ASEAN’s relations with other major players in the region, Japan, India and Australia? And what is ASEAN’s relationship with the geopolitics and geo-economics of the Trump presidency? Mark is a Professor of International Politics at UWA and his expertise covers international relations, international political economy, Australian foreign policy, the regional politics of Asia, security interests and the economics of this vital region. Come learn more about ASEAN with Mark Beeson.

Ian Dunican joins us today to talk about one of his favorite subjects (other than jiu-jitsu and ultra running), which is sleep.  He's currently working on a PhD at the University of Western Australia (UWA) focused on the question, "Can you use sleep as a performance enhancer?" Starting off in the Irish Army as an infantryman, after five years he left the military and moved into personal training, eventually following his wife to Western Australia where he settled down and ended up working for the mining industry as a Human Performance and Health & Safety project manager.  He has a Master's Degree in Mining Engineering, an MBA, and a Graduate Certificate in Adult Sleep Science from UWA. A well traveled man, Ian has lots of experience and education about sleep on this podcast, from the basics of sleep hygiene to how much sleep you need as an athlete to the difference between chronotypes such as larks and owls, how to beat jetlag and the best way to adjust to sleeping at altitude.  Ian discusses the best times to schedule meetings and make decisions, the worst times to quit, and everything in between.  A finisher of the Leadville Trail 100 (in 2013) and a BJJ blue belt, Ian backs up his academic knowledge with a lifetime of practical application with elite athletes, the military, and the corporate world.  If you'd like to connect with Ian he's @sleep4perform on Twitter or @sleep4perform on Facebook, or you can grab his email at the end of the show. Inside the Shark's Mind

Discovery

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2014 26:59

Fatal shark attacks on humans have been on the increase in Australia. For Discovery, marine biologist Dr Helen Scales finds out how scientists are exploring new, humane ways to reduce this number. At the start of this year, the state government of Western Australia decided to undertake the culling of sharks longer than three metres, after what they called an “unprecedented number of attacks”. In February, thousands of Australians protested against the cull, with conservationists claiming that it will make no difference to the number of attacks. An outspoken critic of the strategy is Rodney Fox, who was almost killed by a Great White shark when he was a young man but who subsequently made a 50-year-long career filming sharks, shark tourism and shark conservation. Rodney talks to Helen about the day he was attacked and his thoughts about the Western Australian cull. Rodney argues that another approach is needed. On a mission to reduce shark attacks, a team has been formed at the Ocean Institute, University of Western Australia (UWA). Their task is to think like a shark to understand how a shark's brain perceives and reacts to light, sound and vibrations, and how the shark's finely tuned senses might be manipulated in the hunt for more effective, humanitarian shark repellents. Research revealed that Great Whites have large chunks of their brain dedicated to vision. So UWA are developing and testing a shark-proof wetsuit that mimics the appearance of poisonous, striped sea snakes. Other solutions under study include bubble curtains and the use of devices which generate electric fields around swimmers.Helen also questions whether sharks deserve their reputation as the most fearsome predators of the sea. Have they been misunderstood and mythologised by popular culture through films such as Jaws and Deep Blue Sea. Proving that even the most predatory of sharks are not automatic man-eaters, Helen herself goes diving with dozens of huge bull sharks (one of the most aggressive species) and comes to the surface unscathed. These three metre long monsters have been trained to be hand-fed by locals while tourists watch close by. Helen also talks to veteran shark researcher Eugenie Clark about the predators' learning abilities and intelligence. Dr Clark was able to train sharks to learn to press the correct buttons with their snouts to get a food treat. She even presented the Crown Prince of Japan with a baby nurse shark who never made a mistake.(Photo: Courtesy of Helen Scales)
