High-performance athletes are Australia's version of Royalty. They do superhuman things and adoring fans hail them as heroes, but off the field, they are human beings. And like all human beings, they are susceptible to eating disorders and body image issues. In fact, many athletes are at much higher risk of disordered eating and eating disorders due to the intense pressures and cultural expectations placed on them. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the National Eating Disorder Collaboration (NEDC) have teamed up to come up with a set of guidelines to help sports teams, clubs and organisations identify warning signs and prevent athletes from developing eating disorders. In 2004, Australian Swimmer Jessica Smith hit her lowest point. She was living out her dream to compete for her country in the Paralympics in Athens but her eating disorder was holding her back. She was expected to make a podium finish but she didn't even qualify for the final.National basketball star Maddie Garrick's eating disorder took hold while she was a teenager but her experience was different from Jessica's. At the AIS she found the support and positive culture that she needed to thrive as an athlete and to find lasting recovery from her ED.In this episode, we also hear from the AIS lead nutritionist, Nikki Jeacocke and prominent sports nutritionist Fiona Sutherland about how a new set of guidelines for sporting organisations is helping create a safe culture for high performing athletes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I have actually known of Alan for many years now since his involvement with Gordo Byrn and his GordoWorld blog. He posts regularly on Twitter and he is one of the coaches/physiologists that I would recommend you follow if you want to find trustworthy training advice.   Alan has an interesting and varied journey to his current residence in Boulder, Colorado.  Starting out as a swimmer in a small outback town in New South Wales, Australia and from there to university in Sydney and on to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. Back to Sydney to work as a swim coach and then onto the US where he teamed up with the aforementioned Gordo Byrn and the setting up of a sports science lab in Boulder. And now his current position as a highly respected sports physiologist working with endurance athletes in cycling and triathlon.   Another highly informative discussion which probably deserves at least 2-3 listens to pick up all of the information covered, such as: Why ‘exercise is medicine’, and Alan’s 7 Core principles which you can find HERE AIS and why it was the first Western attempt to mimic the Eastern Bloc training venues Alex Popov swimming - mastering the process and focussing on rhythm, range and relaxation It’s the little things that matter - living at AIS and immersion into elite performance and culture Eastern Bloc vs Western style coaching and why there are actually more similarities than differences Eastern Bloc athlete development culture Different again from AIS - working with Doug Frost and Ian Thorpe Getting it done - Finding a way, or making one LINKS If you want to follow Alan the best place is Twitter and his website Alan’s latest obsession is Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and you can find out more about this at his site HumanGo.com Alan’s “walk on” music…Pork and Beans by Weezer We also chatted about several books including: Deep Medicine by Eric Topol.  If you are interested you can hear the author Eric Tool speak about this subject on video HERE Alan’s current favourite book Running with the Kenyans by Adharanand Finn Alan spent time observing the great Russian swimmer Alexander Popov. Dr. John Sullivan shares why “The Brain always Wins” on PHIT for a Queen     The Brain is the Governor connected by the vagus nerve The brain hasn’t been viewed as cool because we don’t tell a good story about it. Why we should view mental health as brain health- “we don’t know what human consciousness is” Breath rate manages heart rate which also manages the brain. Shares how brain management starts with PROCESS- listen to find what those stand for When you can regulate heart rate and respiration rate you can regulate emotion. Leaving you to be able to “see and do” emotion regulation, pattern recognition. What if we viewed nutrition as the messages received to optimize brain health and function versus physical function? - “nutrition is neurotransmitters. “ Does our lack of social connection- eye to eye, hand to hand impact our brain health? http://www.thebrainalwayswins.com/home.html https://www.amazon.com/Brain-Always-Wins-Improving-Management/dp/1909273732 Some of the proceeds go back to the military where they can continue to study the brain and the impacts on war.       How you know he is legit: Dr. John P. Australian Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe will spearhead an initiative for the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to support athletes' mental health. The five-time Olympic gold medalist, who became the youngest male to represent Australia at age 14, is ideally placed to support the AIS as he has been very vocal about his battle with mental health problems like depression. Because of his experiences, Thorpe is dedicated to helping other athletes who are undergoing mental health crises. To express his support, Thorpe agreed to become the first member of the newly established AIS Athlete Wellbeing and Engagement committee. The new committee, which involves other mental health experts, will specifically focus on certain areas concerning the well-being of athletes. Among these areas are professional development, participation in community initiatives, and skills that will help athletes cope with a high-pressure environment. The committee also plans to bring together practitioners and different athletes across the country to develop a national action plan for athlete welfare.  Through the initiatives of the committee, Thorpe hopes to bring about positive change in the athletes' mental health and performance. Thorpe expressed his call for change in his speech at the AIS summit on athlete well-being last June. One of his proposals to boost athletes' mental health is to urge sports organizations to stop setting medal targets. According to Thorpe, setting gold medals as the primary goal for athletes will only be stressful for them. Instead of motivating them to do well, having medal targets will only negatively affect their performance.

Emerging technologies for performance enhancement, Damian holds a joint appointment within the School of Sport and Exercise Science / ISEAL Victoria University, and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) where he is responsible for the provision of quality research for both institutions. Damian was appointed as the inaugural AIS Skill Acquisition Specialist (2002) a role dedicated to providing Australian coaches with an evidence-based approach to skill development. Consistent with many other disciplines of sport and exercise science, Skill Acquisition practitioners now have more sophisticated technology at their disposal for both the measurement and development of skilled performance than ever before. Despite claims boasting refined measurement sensitivity, real-time feedback performance, and enhanced interactivity and fidelity, the relative efficacy of such tools is poorly understood. Held, September 2011.
