What GoOD thing happened to you today, so far? Your mind may say, "well I woke up this morning." It may say, "My family all woke up this morning." It may say, "It's too early. Nothing has happened yet." It may say nothing at all. Notice what happens when you pose a question to the mind, how maybe it throws out a few answers, but it quickly exhausts itself and you're left as Silence. That's the magic of questions. You can use questions to go beyond the mind, to go beyond yourself, to where goodness is, Godness is. Use affirmations to go beyond affirmations.* I love you I am you nik ************************ To claim your free gift, leave a review on Apple Podcasts, screenshot it and send it to me at nikki@curlynikki.com! And today is yet another page in our great love story. Nothing that happens to you today will change that or even alter it in the slightest way. Lift your hands, heart, and soul, and receive that truth as you pray this prayer: My whole life I've searched for a love to satisfy the deepest longings within me to be known, treasured, and wholly accepted. When You created me, Lord, Your very first thought of me made Your heart explode with a love that set You in pursuit of me. Your love for me was so great that You, the God of the whole universe, went on a personal quest to woo me, adore me, and finally grab hold of me with the whisper, " will never let you go." Lord, I release my grip on all the things I was holding on to, preventing me from returning Your passionate embrace. I want nothing to hold me but You. So, with breathless wonder, I give You all my faith, all my hope, and all my love. I picture myself carrying the old, torn-out boards that inadequately propped me up and placing them in a pile. This pile contains other things I can remove from me now that my new intimacy-based identity is established. Hay down my need to understand why things happen the way they do. I lay down my fears about others walking away and taking their love with them. I lay down my desire to prove my worth. | lay down my resistance to fully trust Your thoughts, Your ways, and Your plans, Lord. I lay down being so self-consumed in an attempt to protect myself. I lay down my anger, unforgiveness, and stubborn ways that beg me to build walls when I sense hints of rejection. I lay all these things down with my broken boards and ask that Your holy fire consume them until they become weightless ashes. And as I walk away, my soul feels safe. Held. And truly free to finally be me." via @lysaterkeurst via 'Uninvited"
Hey smarties! We recorded today’s episode before historic news broke that the House of representatives voted to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker. We’re monitoring the story as it develops and as the House figures out what comes next. IIt’s Day 1 of Sam Bankman-Fried’s trial. Last year, The founder of FTX was charged with counts of fraud and conspiracy after his crypto exchange went under and investigators found that $8 billion in customer funds had gone missing. Before his fall from grace, SBF had become one of the most powerful players in the industry. This has us wondering: Is crypto on trial along with Sam Bankman-Fried? On the show today, Bloomberg’s Zeke Faux, author of “Number Go Up: Inside Crypto’s Wild Rise and Staggering Fall,” explains how the trial could play out, where crypto is today and whether it has a viable future, post-SBF. Then, we’ll hear how companies can be held accountable for the junk they leave floating in space. And automatic enrollment in retirement savings plans has given millennials a boost in an economy where they haven't generally had a leg up. Later, we’ll hear from one listener on the overlap between colleges and trade schools. And another listener explains why he was wrong about music. Here’s everything we talked about today: “Who's Rooting Hardest for a Sam Bankman-Fried Conviction? The Crypto Industry.” from The New York Times “With SBF, Gisele, and Michael Lewis at Peak of Crypto Craze” from New York Magazine “What Good is Crypto If Coin Prices Don’t Go Up?” from Bloomberg “The FTX trial is bigger than Sam Bankman-Fried” from The Verge “Mountain of FTX Evidence: Emails, Chat Logs, Code and a Notebook” from The New York Times “Can FTX Be Revived—Without Sam Bankman-Fried?” from Wired “Why Black investors are more likely to own crypto” from Marketplace “FEMA and FCC Plan Nationwide Emergency Alert Test for Oct. 4, 2023” from FEMA “Dish Network Hit With Historic Fine Over Space Debris” from Gizmodo “Millennials on Better Track for Retirement Than Boomers and Gen X” from The Wall Street Journal The countdown is on! "What Good are Testimonies?" Mark 15:21-39 Pastor Tom Gray
Pastor John Ryan Cantu brings this week's message, “What Good?” Key Verse: James 2:14–26 NLT “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don't show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don't give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn't enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don't have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can't you see that faith without good deeds is useless? Don't you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.”

Despite the war, many Ukrainian academics and students remain in the country and continue doing academic and research work. In this episode, we explain why Ukrainian universities and academics need support, and why the war is a time for thinking, but also for action. Volodymyr Yermolenko, the chief editor of UkraineWorld.org, speaks to Aaron James Wendland, Vision Fellow in Public Philosophy at King's College, London, and a Senior Research Fellow at Massey College, Toronto. We also talk about thinking and philosophy, and what philosophical ideas can be important today. Aaron Wendland is organizing a benefit conference titled What Good is Philosophy to raise the funds required to establish a Centre for Civic Engagement at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy, Ukraine's oldest university. The conference will be held on March 17-19. More information: https://munkschool.utoronto.ca/kma-conference
Anita, Mavis, and Gail discuss the the first year of InflexionPoint Podcast in terms of the most personally impactful and transformational episodes. They describe the show as influential in terms of historical and racial literacy. Racial Literacy: (1) a concept developed by sociologist France Winddance Twine, UC Santa Barbara Dept of Sociology. She describes it as "a form of racial socialization and antiracist training that ... parents of African-descent children practiced in their efforts to defend their children against racism" in her research done in the United Kingdom with mixed-race families. (2) a skill and practice by which individuals can probe the existence of racism and examine the effects of race and institutionalized systems on their experiences and representation in US society. Becoming racially literate requires that, as educators (and humans), we can: Engage with the emotional content of any conversation that has a focus on race Welcome personal narratives and the lived experiences of all who are involved in the race conversation Talk confidently about our own racial identities Feel confident in creating and engaging in healthy and reciprocal cross-racial relationships Challenge racism at the individual, group and systemic level Historical Literacy: The past informs the present to empower the future. The past and present, in many ways, influence our future. Paulo Freire, in his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, says: “Looking at the past must only be a means of understanding more clearly what and who you are. So, you can build the future more wisely." What Good is History? History matters because history is the fragile tether that not only connects us to what and who came before us, it is by way of history that “then” has become “now.” Asking questions of history brings perspective, knowledge, maybe even lessons. Episode 44: Dr. John Benson's Algonquin Wolf Research 2007-2011 (What Good is a Wolf Part V) In this episode, (Part V of a six-part series on wolf research in Algonquin Park), I chat with Dr. John Benson, who picked up the Algonquin Park wolf research baton in 2007, as part of his PhD studies at Trent University. Much of John's work focused on taking a look at wolf-coyote hybridization and its impact on Algonquin's wolf population, on territoriality, which researchers call spatial segregation and wolf and pup mortality risks amongst other very interesting topics. Dr. Benson is now an Assistant Professor of Vertebrate Ecology with the School of Natural Resources a the University of Nebraska. For info on his work check out this video: https://mediahub.unl.edu/media/9745 This musical interlude is another wolf track called “Silent Running” from Dan Gibson's Solitudes Legend of the Wolf CD, and brought to you with the approval of Digital Funding LLC. Episode 43: What Good is a Wolf PT4 - More of John and Mary Theberge's Great Leap Research This episode continues by sharing the 1987-1999 work of Dr. John Theberge and his wife Mary Theberge. In this episode, I'm going to focus on the uncovering of the annual deer migration and the collective freak-out that this caused amongst the people of the Round Lake area, the Ministry officials, the Theberge's themselves, and eventually the general public of wolf lovers and protectors. The list of references that have informed much of this and the previous episode includes: John and Mary Theberge's 1998 book Wolf Country https://academic.oup.com/jmammal/article/89/4/1067/868475 Theberge, J. Filmmaker Kogonada adapts a heady sci-fi story written by Alexander Weinstein into a thoughtful, melancholic piece about the nature of existence, artificial intelligence, and the ethics of personhood. In episode 241, Luke & James consider the “Chinese Room thought experiment,” debate Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, the power of immigrants being able to name themselves, the opening credit dance, depression in a relative utopia, Colin Farrell's lack of emotion, the difference between written and video essays, and the value of historical preservation vs. violating privacy. They end by casting their votes on which was better: the short story or the movie! Episode 42:What Good is a Wolf PT3 - John and Mary Theberge's Great Leap This episode focuses on the 1987-1999 groundbreaking work of Dr. John Theberge and Mary Theberge. A student of Douglas Pimlott in the 1960s, John Theberge was a professor and researcher in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, University of Waterloo, from 1972 until his retirement in 2000. His initial interest in wolves involved work on wolf vocalizations (published with WRS's Dr. Falls in 1967 and on observations about their behavior in the summer of 1969). His wife and research partner Mary Theberge was a key fieldwork contributor, an expert in aerial telemetry and satellite imagery interpretation, and very skilled in wolf vocalization. The list of references that have informed much of these two episodes include: John and Mary Theberge's 1998 book Wolf Country https://academic.oup.com/jmammal/article/89/4/1067/868475 Theberge, J. Episode 39: What Good is a Wolf? PT2 More of Pimlott's Myth Busting In this episode, I share more o Douglas Pimlott and his researcher's ground-breaking and myth busting research on the wolves of Algonquin Park. Topics of interest include details as to how wolves move, what they eat, how they establish territory and of course wolf vocalization and the history of Algonquin's premier public wolf howls. Musical interlude is a track from Dan Gibson's Solitudes Breaking Through the Mist album and is called Return to the Pack. It is brought to your with thanks from Digital Funding LLC. This and other of Dan Gibson's Solitudes work can be found on Apple Music, Spotify or anywhere else where music streaming is found. Episode 38: What Good is a Wolf! Pimlott's Early Myth Busting This episode is the first of a series on the Algonquin Park wolf research that began with Douglas Pimlott's early work from 1958-1962. Prior to that time, Algonquin Park wolves had mostly been seen as vermin out to destroy all other Park wildlife. This episode's musical interlude comes from Dan Gibson's Solitudes Algonquin Suite and is called Reunion of the Wolves. It is brought to your with thanks from Digital Funding LLC. Arthur C. Clarke was already one of the most famous SciFi writers of all time before collaborating with Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, so how did he feel about the release of the film just beating his novel by a few months and ultimately overshadowing it? In episode 229, Luke & James discuss a potentially tarnished legacy, a unique form of collaboration, a difference of tone, and how changes to HAL 9000 alters the themes of the story. At the end they cast their votes on which was ultimately better: the book or the movie! Guest Pastor Rev. Steve Phillips | April 3, 2022 | What Good are the 10 Commandments Anymore? | Galatians 3:19-25: Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. 20 Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian

Today's guest is Peter Hoffman, a man I've long admired for his greenmarket ingredient driven food, his former restaurants (Savoy, Back Forty, and Back Forty West), his passion and commitment to the land and the food and farmers behind it. Peter is the author of the highly acclaimed book, "What Good?: A Memoir in Fourteen Ingredients." From the moment I cracked the spine and dove in to this book, I knew I was in good hands. Peter's writing is as eloquent and beautiful as his cooking was, weaving together stories of his childhood, restaurant life in NYC, the farmers behind the greenmarket, and the ingredients that drive the underlying narrative. I hope you enjoy today's conversation with Peter.
