Deeply passionate about early education, Denita Dinger promotes cultivating curiosity and autonomy in young learners by fostering environments rich in opportunities for play and natural growth—guiding principles she lives by to help ignite a love for lifelong learning in children. Denita discusses the often-misguided focus on kindergarten readiness and how it can detract from the truly valuable skills of perseverance, independence, and teamwork. She emphasizes the importance of going beyond traditional academic metrics — allowing children to lead their play, take risks, and naturally develop critical thinking and motor skills at their own pace. As Teacher Tom and Denita share their insights, they delve into the harmful impact of fear-mongering in education and the importance of creating learning environments that foster genuine curiosity and lifelong learning. Teacher Tom's Podcast is all about taking play seriously. In each episode, Teacher Tom inspires early childhood educators, parents, and other listeners with information, techniques, and best practices to provide children an authentic play-filled childhood. “This idea of kindergarten readiness or school readiness is getting in the way of true readiness, of empowering children with the skills that they're going to need much, much longer.” — Denita Dinger Guest Bio: Denita Dinger has traveled the globe since 2009 leading empowering and inspiring keynotes and workshops to all sorts of adults with children in their lives. As her work with children in her former family child care program — and current, child-led, multi-age school — has evolved, so has her message. What began as her first consulting company, Play Counts, evolved to a name that better reflects her message: Listen to the Children. Denita's work includes operating Kaleidoscope Play School (a three-morning-a-week, child-led, ages 2-10 school), coaching, keynotes, workshops, and online training. She doesn't just talk the talk; she walks the walk. Her trainings are inspired by what she learns from children. She has co-authored three books: Let Them Play: An Early Childhood UNcurriculum, Let's Play, and Let's All Play. Host Bio: “Teacher Tom” Hobson is an early childhood educator, international speaker, education consultant, teacher of teachers, parent educator, and author. He is best known, however, for his namesake blog, Teacher Tom's Blog, where he has posted daily for over a decade, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the USA. For nearly two decades, Teacher Tom was the sole employee of the Woodland Park Cooperative School, a parent-owned and operated school knit together by Teacher Tom's democratic, progressive play-based pedagogy. Teacher Tom came into teaching through the backdoor, so to speak, having enrolled his own child in a cooperative preschool, where he began working daily in his daughter's classroom as an assistant teacher under the tutelage of veteran educators — although he'll be the first to tell you that most of what he learned came from the children themselves. When it was time for his daughter to move on, he “stayed behind.” Today, Teacher Tom shares his play-based pedagogy through online e-courses for early childhood educators; produces online early childhood conferences; consults with organizations about his “Family Schools” program; and inspires early-years audiences around the world (Greece, UK, Iceland, Australia, China, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada, and across the US) both virtually and in-person with his engaging views on early childhood education, play, and pedagogy. He was pressured by his blog readers into authoring his first book, aptly named Teacher Tom's First Book, and is thrilled about the 2023 release of Teacher Tom's Second Book. Laura chats with her pal and co-facilitator of The Nature and Play Based Consortium, Ade Hofmann. Ade is the founder of Nature Play All Day and she left over a decade of traditional teaching experience behind when she traded fluorescent lights for sunshine. Her philosophy for early childhood education is that living is learning and that play is an essential right to for all! Together Laura and Ade talk about two things they love, stories and outdoor play. They also explore adult control and how this presents barriers for free play. Highlights: Co-Create Materials Together: Ade shares about how she creates some storytelling materials alongside children rather than providing them for them. Play Barriers: Laura and Ade discuss how they are recovering perfectionists and their inner dialogue can become a play barrier that can stunt our creativity. Rewriting: Listen in as Ade shares some ways to get out of your own way and rewrite the narrative to truly share space with children. Did you know that handwriting development depends on a solid foundation of sensory processing skills? Really, all of our motor output (both gross and fine motor) become refined and developed after sensory skills have been established. So, it's pretty common for some kids with handwriting challenges to have underlying sensory processing issues. In this episode, we'll talk about: common handwriting development struggles, when it's time to seek OT support for handwriting challenges, and how OT can help with handwriting challenges. Kindergarten Readiness - Independent Navigation of Environment When our children are babies and toddlers, we do so much for them. They require so much attending and care since they are too young to do and care for themselves. As parents, we often see them as more dependant than we should. There is so much a two-year-old can learn to navigate their environment independently. It is at the age of two that we as parents can encourage independence and self-care. Children are starting school earlier now, either at two or three years old. They are exposed to and learn so much quicker. Their brains are sponges. Most children want to do it for themselves. Some may need additional modeling and practice, but the earlier you start, the quicker they will adapt. It's important to remember as a parent that we are not raising our kids for us; we are raising them to go out into the world. Three critical words to know and apply in teaching pre-schoolers consistency, structure and repetition. Kindergarten has changed considerably over the last few decades. There are expectations for social, emotional, and behavioral skills in Kindergarten beyond academics. The increase in expectations is due to children attending pre-school earlier and acquiring academic and social skills in pre-school. To navigate the current kindergarten curriculum, children are expected to have a certain level of independence. Teachers are required to cover more curriculum with less playtime. There are more tasks and swift transitions required throughout the day. Kindergarten is more serious now, requiring a different level of performance. To ensure your child's success fostering independence in self-care, communication, self-regulation, and tasks are necessary. Of course, it is an asset if your child knows their letters, recognizes words, colors, shapes, and writes. All the skills below can be developed and encouraged in your home by allowing your child to take a more active role in meeting their own needs and helping the family. The following skills are for independent navigation of the classroom: Takes responsibility for belongings. Unpacks and packs up (lunch box, backpack, jacket). Able to dress self Transitions to different activities and tasks throughout the day and adjusts to the situation. Attend to an activity/task for at least 10 minutes and stay with the activity or task to completion. Uses words to solve problems or conflicts. Asks for help and asks questions when uncertain what to do. Follow one and two-step oral directions. Talks in sentences and uses sentences that include two or more ideas. Waits turn to play with toys or games. Tries to regulate emotions properly and articulates feelings in words. Demonstrates increasing self-control. Works cooperatively (listens to others, shares and take turns). All these skills fall into these skill categories: Attention and awareness listening Social communication skills are the use of language in social contexts. It encompasses social interaction, social cognition, pragmatics, and language processing. Self-control/self-management cognitive flexibility self-care Visit our site for the complete article www.socialmindcenter.com https://www.socialmindcenter.com/autism-mind-discover/2021/4/15/top-10-skills-for-kindergarten-readiness

www.commsolutionsmn.com- This week we have a big Local Lowdown episode. This is not a ""fast-forward" episode if you don't live in the cities we discuss. As we have always said, the same issues find their way into cities and towns across the state and, really, the nation. Studying how these issues are handled from city to city not only helps you (as an informed resident) to understand the issues, but also to see how they spread, how to fight them, and why it is important for you to be on point in your community. First, we discuss some local odd-year elections. After the debacle with the pledge in St. Louis Park, every single race is contested. In Golden Valley, council member Steve Schmidgall is going after Mayor Shep Harris, despite the fact that they seem to agree on most left-of center positions. We will have to see how these races shake out, but we also discuss our frustration with odd-year elections, and low voter turnout. Brooklyn Center is imposing a one-year moratorium on a designated 81 acre opportunity zone. The city already owns 35 acres, and may soon own another 9 on the site of the former Target store. The moratorium was placed because the master plan for the area is not yet completed and they wanted to stall development until they could control all of it. The moratorium expires right after the master plan is due to be completed. Move along... nothing to see here. Sherburne County has been discussing implementing Tobacco21 at a county-wide level. They don't seem to have the votes, but look for the special interest group to go to the cities (they already are). This is a ridiculous policy, as it doesn't accomplish anything but to hurt local businesses. It has spread from city to city, like a bad disease. Minneapolis has officially outlawed all new drive-thrus from being built. They site concerns over greenhouse gas emissions and danger to pedestrians. Don't you think for a second that this won't affect any existing building that has a drive-thru and wants to remodel. Lastly, ISD #281 (Robbinsdale Public Schools) issued a summary of Superintendent Carleton Jenkins recent evaluation. They accentuated all of the positives and downplayed all of the ways he has missed the mark. He did a great job in "Central Office Capacity" (what?), but stunk in "Kindergarten Readiness" and "3rd Grade Proficiency", but hey... he's doing an exemplary job!
