“One day the Joseph tribes came to Joshua and asked, “Why didn't you give us more land? The Lord has always been kind to us, and we have too many people for this small region.” Joshua replied, “If there's not enough room for you in the hill country of Ephraim, then go into the forest that belonged to the Perizzites and the Rephaim. Clear out the trees and make more room for yourselves there.” “Even if we do that,” they answered, “there still won't be enough land for us in the hill country. And we can't move down into Jezreel Valley, because the Canaanites who live in Beth-Shan and in other parts of the valley have iron chariots.” “Your tribes do have a lot of people,” Joshua admitted. “I'll give you more land. Your tribes are powerful, so you can have the rest of the hill country, but it's a forest, and you'll have to cut down the trees and clear the land. You can also have Jezreel Valley. Even though the Canaanites there are strong and have iron chariots, you can force them to leave the valley.”  - ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭17‬:‭14‬-‭18‬ ‭CEV‬‬

ANNOUNCEMENT: After Christmas, we will begin a 22-year journey through the Bible. The first book is The Letter of James. The new format will be 7 days in the chapter (Daily Devo) and then one longer form of teaching from that chapter (The Vince Miller Show). It will feel like seven days of close examination of Scripture, with one high-level teaching that is practical and applicable, tying the chapter together. Also, I want you to pray that God will use this in a special way so that people everywhere will know, grow, and go in their faith, living all-in for Him. Two men, two battles—one ends in tragedy and the other in victory. Which will you be? We are in 1 Samuel 31. This is the final chapter and the conclusion of Saul's life. Let's read verse one: Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. — 1 Samuel 31:1 In the dramatic conclusion of 1 Samuel, two men—David and Saul—are vivid examples of two opposite men. Their stories unfold simultaneously but in stark opposition. On the southern front, David is in Ziklag, a city devastated by Amalekites. He strengthens himself in the Lord, rallies his men, and rescues captives, turning defeat into triumph. Meanwhile, to the north, Saul faces the Philistines in the Jezreel Valley. Isolated from God, riddled with fear, and desperate, Saul seeks guidance from a forbidden medium. His final act is tragic—taking his own life on Mount Gilboa as his army crumbles. Two men, two outcomes. David's end in Chapter 30 is marked by victory and generosity. After defeating the Amalekites, he shares the plunder with his men and the elders of Judah, fostering unity and gratitude. His reliance on God leads to restoration and blessing. Saul's end in Chapter 31 is dramatically different. His life ends in despair, a tragic culmination of years of rebellion, disobedience, and rejection of God's will. His defeat marks the collapse of his legacy. Both men faced battles, but their circumstances didn't dictate the outcomes. Their hearts did. David's heart was surrendered to God, leading him to fight with divine strength. Saul's heart had long drifted from God, leading to his tragic downfall. Thus we learn: Circumstances test us, but our hearts will define us. Life presents us all with battles every day. The question isn't if we'll face them but how we'll fight them—and with whom. Will you face them like David, battling with the Lord, finding victory and generosity even in adversity? Or will you face them like Saul, struggling in your strength, isolated, and ending in defeat? My suggestion is to live in Chapter 30, not Chapter 31. #HeartOfFaith, #BattleReady, #LiveVictoriously Ask This: How will you face your battles: with David's faith or Saul's fear? In what ways can you surrender your heart to God during challenges? Do This: Live in Chapter 30, not Chapter 31. Pray This: Father, grant me the strength to face my battles with unwavering faith and a heart fully surrendered to You. Help me choose victory and generosity, reflecting Your love in every circumstance. Amen. Play This: Jehovah.

Hope Revealed In Hard Times | 1 Samuel 30:7-10

What do hard times reveal about your hope? In Chapter 30, the Philistines advanced toward the Jezreel Valley for a final showdown with Saul, while David headed south to Ziklag to discover his land burned and his families taken. Here's how David responds in 1 Samuel 30:7-10. And David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, “Bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. And David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue after this band? Shall I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue.” So David set out, and the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the brook Besor, where those who were left behind stayed. But David pursued, he and four hundred men. Two hundred stayed behind, who were too exhausted to cross the brook Besor. — 1 Samuel 30:7-10 David and Saul faced immense external pressures—enemies advancing and personal losses—and both were pressed from within by fear and desperation. Yet their responses could not have been more different, revealing the foundations of their faith. Saul, in Chapter 28, turns to the forbidden. In his desperation, he seeks out a medium, the Witch of Endor, hoping for answers. Saul's decision highlights his lack of relationship with God. He resorts to man-made solutions, which ultimately leave him more hopeless than before. This action is the culmination of Saul's life of self-reliance and disobedience. Instead of finding relief, he sinks deeper into despair, paving the way for his tragic end. David shows us a better way in Chapter 30. Upon finding Ziklag burned and his family taken captive, he doesn't act impulsively or turn to ungodly solutions. Instead, he strengthens himself in the Lord (1 Samuel 30:6) and seeks God's guidance. By calling for the ephod, David demonstrates a heart fully dependent on God. His inquiry is met with clarity and hope: “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and rescue.” David's reliance on God not only brings assurance but also restores direction and unity among his men. The contrast between these two leaders reminds us of an essential truth: Hard times reveal where your hope resides. Like Saul, we can be tempted to seek quick fixes in worldly wisdom or human advice. But true relief comes when, like David, we let the hard task ahead reveal that our hope is only in the Lord, who is our strength and our salvation. #FaithUnderPressure, #HopeInGod, #StrengthInTrials Ask This: When life presses in, do you seek God first, or do you look for relief elsewhere? What steps can you take today to strengthen your relationship with him so turning to God becomes your natural response in times of need? Do This: When it's hard, which could be today, find your hope in the Lord. Pray This: Lord, when trials press in, help me to turn to You as my source of strength and hope. Teach me to trust Your guidance and depend on Your promises, no matter how hard the road ahead may seem. Amen. Play This: Hope Has A Name.

Where do you find strength when you stand in the ashes? Chapter 29 focused on the scene behind enemy lines before the Philistines and Israel went to battle. In Chapter 30, the Philistines advanced northward toward the Jezreel Valley for the final showdown with Saul while David headed south back toward Ziklag. Here is what happens next in 1 Samuel 30:1-6. Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made a raid against the Negeb and against Ziklag. They had overcome Ziklag and burned it with fire and taken captive the women and all who were in it, both small and great. They killed no one, but carried them off and went their way. And when David and his men came to the city, they found it burned with fire, and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until they had no more strength to weep. David's two wives also had been taken captive, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God. — 1 Samuel 30:1-6 David had narrowly escaped a moral disaster. He had been spared from fighting against Israel—his own people—in a battle alongside the Philistines. Though rejected by the Philistine leaders, David likely felt a strange relief as he and his men returned to Ziklag. But relief quickly turned into devastation. Their city had been raided and burned, their families taken captive. And the men who had been his closest allies were now bitterly angry, speaking of stoning him. This was the final test before David would ascend to the throne God had promised. The pressure was immense. Everything David had built seemed lost—his home, his family, his friendships, even his leadership. Yet, in this moment of utter despair, he made a defining choice. "He strengthened himself in the Lord his God." What does finding strength in the Lord in a moment like this mean? It's not just wishful thinking or a vague prayer. David strengthened himself by turning his entire focus to God. He likely prayed with raw honesty, pouring out his fears and grief. He remembered God's faithfulness in past trials—rescuing him from Saul, giving him victory over Goliath, and guiding him in the wilderness. He anchored himself in God's promises, knowing that God had anointed him to be king and that He finishes what He starts. David's strength didn't come from within but from surrendering his weakness to God and trusting Him to act. In our lives, finding strength in the Lord looks the same. It means stopping to pray, even when we feel too overwhelmed to find the words. It's reflecting on God's unchanging character—His power, His love, and His ability to redeem any situation. It's digging into Scripture, letting His promises speak louder than our fears. And it's choosing to trust Him, even when the outcome is unclear. In life, we all face Ziklag moments—times when relationships strain, circumstances crumble, leadership is tested, and we stand in the ashes. When those moments come, you have a choice: You can give in to despair, or you can press into God for the strength to endure. Like David, you must learn to seek Him as your refuge, even when everything around you feels like it's falling apart. #StrengthInGod, #ZiklagMoments, #FaithOverFear Ask This: How can remembering God's past faithfulness help you find strength in your current challenges? What steps can you take to seek God's strength in despair? Do This: Stand strong in the ashes with God. Pray This: Lord, when I feel surrounded by loss and uncertainty, remind me to seek strength in You alone. Help me to trust Your promises, knowing You are faithful in carrying me through every trial. Amen. Play This: Beauty for Ashes.

fWotD Episode 2665: Turabay dynasty Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 21 August 2024 is Turabay dynasty. The Turabay dynasty (Arabic: آل طرباي, romanized: Āl Ṭurabāy) was a family of Bedouin emirs in northern Palestine who served as the multazims (tax farmers) and sanjak-beys (district governors) of Lajjun Sanjak during Ottoman rule in the 16th–17th centuries. The sanjak (district) spanned the towns of Lajjun, Jenin and Haifa, and the surrounding countryside. The progenitors of the family had served as chiefs of Marj Bani Amir (the Plain of Esdraelon or Jezreel Valley) under the Egypt-based Mamluks in the late 15th century.During the conquest of the Levant and Egypt by the Ottoman Empire in 1516–1517, the Turabay chief Qaraja and his son Turabay aided the forces of Ottoman Sultan Selim I. The Ottomans kept them in their Mamluk-era role as guardians of the strategic Via Maris and Damascus–Jerusalem highways and rewarded them with tax farms in northern Palestine. Their territory became a sanjak in 1559 and Turabay's son Ali became its first governor. His brother Assaf was appointed in 1573, serving for ten years before being dismissed and exiled to Rhodes for involvement in a rebellion. His nephew Turabay was appointed in 1589 and remained in office until his death in 1601. His son and successor Ahmad, the most prominent chief of the dynasty, ruled Lajjun for nearly a half-century and repulsed attempts by the powerful Druze chief and Ottoman governor of Sidon-Beirut and Safed, Fakhr al-Din Ma'n, to take over Lajjun and Nablus in the 1620s. He consolidated the family's alliance with the Ridwan and Farrukh governing dynasties of Gaza and Nablus, which remained intact until the dynasties' demise toward the end of the century. As multazims and sanjak-beys the Turabays were entrusted with collecting taxes for the Ottomans, quelling local rebellions, acting as judges, and securing roads. They were largely successful in these duties, while keeping good relations with the peasantry and the village chiefs of the sanjak. Although in the 17th century several of their emirs lived in the towns of Lajjun and Jenin, the Turabays largely preserved their nomadic way of life, pitching camp with their Banu Haritha tribesmen near Caesarea in the winters and the plain of Acre in the summers. The eastward migration of the Banu Haritha to the Jordan Valley, Ottoman centralization drives, and diminishing tax revenues brought about their political decline and they were permanently stripped of office in 1677. Members of the family remained in Jenin at the close of the century, and descendants continue to live in present-day northern Israel and Palestine. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:59 UTC on Wednesday, 21 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Turabay dynasty on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joey.

Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. It is day 246 of the war with Hamas. Military reporter Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. After eight months in captivity, four Israeli hostages -- Noa Argamani, 26, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 41 -- were rescued alive in a minutely planned IDF operation from Hamas captivity Saturday in a daring daylight operation in the central Gaza Strip. Fabian fills us in. The IDF said Friday that they had carried out an airstrike on a Hamas command center that had been set up in a United Nations school in Gaza City's Shati neighborhood, killing several members of the cell. The strike comes a day after the IDF hit another UN school in Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp, which was housing what it said was a compound used by dozens of terror operatives, 17 of which have so far been identified. Fabian discusses what we know about both strikes. A drone launched from Lebanon impacted in an open area in the Jezreel Valley, near Nazareth, in northern Israel on Friday afternoon, in what is potentially the deepest drone strike during this conflict. Fabian describes why the use of drones is on the rise. For more updates, please check out The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. Moma Fixes the Mess. Today, Pastor Michael shares a powerful story from the Old Testament, a time of great turmoil. It's the story of Moma Fixes the Mess, a testament to the profound wisdom of God and the importance of allowing Him to guide us in challenging times. In this story, the hero is a Moma, Deborah.  Sisera, the commander of King Jabin, is going around the nation doing bad things, and the nation of Israel has a mess.  The Israelites went to Deborah as a prophetess for her advice during these times, and she told them to summon Barak, take 10,000 soldiers to Mt. Tabor, and fight against Sisera, as the Lord was on their side and would deliver a victory to them. A bunch of shepherds went against an army that had iron chariots, the most advanced military machines of the day. On the surface, this appeared to be an almost suicide mission. Yet, the Lord routed Sisera's army totally!  The Lord was with the Israelites! The world still underestimates the power of a Mother.  (CSB Bible Notes) As God's appointed representative, Deborah summoned Barak to lead the fighting. She also gave him the Lord's battle plan, deploying ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun on Mount Tabor, a strategic location at the northeast corner of the Jezreel Valley. Further, she assured him of the Lord's victory over Israel's enemies. Verses can be found in Judges 4: 1 - 23. Hosea 1:1-11 1 The Lord gave this message to Hosea son of Beeri during the years when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah were kings of Judah, and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel. 2 When the Lord first began speaking to Israel through Hosea, he said to him, “Go and marry a prostitute, so that some of her children will be conceived in prostitution. This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the Lord and worshiping other gods.” 3 So Hosea married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she became pregnant and gave Hosea a son. 4 And the Lord said, “Name the child Jezreel, for I am about to punish King Jehu's dynasty to avenge the murders he committed at Jezreel. In fact, I will bring an end to Israel's independence. 5 I will break its military power in the Jezreel Valley.” 6 Soon Gomer became pregnant again and gave birth to a daughter. And the Lord said to Hosea, “Name your daughter Lo-ruhamah—‘Not loved'—for I will no longer show love to the people of Israel or forgive them. 7 But I will show love to the people of Judah. I will free them from their enemies—not with weapons and armies or horses and charioteers, but by my power as the Lord their God.” 8 After Gomer had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she again became pregnant and gave birth to a second son. 9 And the Lord said, “Name him Lo-ammi—‘Not my people'—for Israel is not my people, and I am not their God. 10 “Yet the time will come when Israel's people will be like the sands of the seashore—too many to count! Then, at the place where they were told, ‘You are not my people,' it will be said, ‘You are children of the living God.' 11 Then the people of Judah and Israel will unite together. They will choose one leader for themselves, and they will return from exile together. What a day that will be—the day of Jezreel—when God will again plant his people in his land.

1. Be strong and courageous, for you will distribute the land I swore to their ancestors to give them as an inheritance. Above all, be strong and very courageous to observe carefully the whole instruction my servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go….Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.Joshua 1:6-92. “God, of course, knows the end from the beginning. He alone has the right and the knowledge to see a person who will be condemned on Judgement Day when His son returns, and to bring a judgment down on those people “early.” Thus God, the judge of all, can determine to begin to mete out justice on them now, rather than waiting for the Last Day. Therefore, the future judgment “intrudes” on the present. This is not totally unusual, because the blessings of the gospel are also intrusions of future grace into the present. Therefore, this is not a mandate for believers in general to move coercively against unbelievers, nor any warrant for a “holy war” by one faith against another. The way we know the Lord's will is to read the Ten Commandments and the other directives of the Bible to us— not to try to imitate everything described in all histories of the Bible.”— Tim Keller, Judges For You3. But the descendants of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who inhabit the valley area have iron chariots, both at Beth-shean with its surrounding villages and in the Jezreel Valley.”So Joshua replied to Joseph's family (that is, Ephraim and Manasseh), “You have many people and great strength. You will not have just one allotment, because the hill country will be yours also. It is a forest; clear it and its outlying areas will be yours. You can also drive out the Canaanites, even though they have iron chariots and are strong.”Joshua 17:16-184. "True discipleship is radical and risk-taking, because true disciples rely on God to keep his promises to bless them, and not on their own instincts, plans, or insurance policies."— Tim Keller, Judges For You

Believe it or not, I'm on my way to Israel again. By the time you are probably reading this blog or watching this Pastor's Chat, I will be on a plane somewhere between here and Israel. I'm meeting my son Jonathan and a group of students and parents in Jerusalem for a three-day tour.  We will have a walking tour of Jerusalem, visiting all the major sites that we can get to on Wednesday and Thursday.  On early Friday morning we will take a tour bus to Tiberius. On the way there we will stop by Caesarea by the Sea, go by Megiddo, view the Jezreel Valley from Mount Precipice just outside Nazareth, drive through Cana of Galilee and then visit the Mount of Beatitudes and Capernaum.  We will complete our day with a boat ride on the sea of Galilee. Iwould really appreciate your prayers, as I travel there and back and as we spend time with these young people.  Our prayer is that the Lord will work special in their hearts and lives as they experience the very place where the Lord lived and minister for His thirty-three years on earth. I prerecorded the chat for today so I could have something to post before I leave on this trip. We have been looking at Psalm 40 and David's prayer as he closes this chapter. David is crying out to God to help him. “Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD” (v. 11). Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me! (v. 13). And then he prays about those who are seeking to destroy him (vv. 14-15). This reminds us that we have a great adversary who is out to devour and destroy us. Peter instructs us to: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world” (1 Peter 5:8-9). Jesus gave a parable telling us how to pray against this adversary in Luke 18:1-8; “Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: "There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, 'Get justice for me from my adversary.' And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, 'Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.' " Then the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?" God has equipped us with the mighty weapons of prayer and His Word to stand strong in our faith when we are attacked by the devil. We either pray or we will faint, lose heart and go down in defeat.  God is a just judge who is ready, willing and able to help us in our times of trial and temptation. Paul spoke to this same subject in Ephesians 6:10-18 and he tells us to stand with both the sword of the Spirit and hold up the shield of faith! Psalm 40 is a great passage to read often in our days of adversity and trials. If we really believe that the LORD is thinking of us, we can trust Him to be our help and deliverer (v. 17). “Do not delay, O my God”! God bless!

1 Chronicles 10 NLT read aloud by Simon MacFarlane. 1 Now the Philistines attacked Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them. Many were slaughtered on the slopes of Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they killed three of his sons—Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malkishua. 3 The fighting grew very fierce around Saul, and the Philistine archers caught up with him and wounded him. 4 Saul groaned to his armor bearer, “Take your sword and kill me before these pagan Philistines come to taunt and torture me.” But his armor bearer was afraid and would not do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When his armor bearer realized that Saul was dead, he fell on his own sword and died. 6 So Saul and his three sons died there together, bringing his dynasty to an end. 7 When all the Israelites in the Jezreel Valley saw that their army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. So the Philistines moved in and occupied their towns. 8 The next day, when the Philistines went out to strip the dead, they found the bodies of Saul and his sons on Mount Gilboa. 9 So they stripped off Saul's armor and cut off his head. Then they proclaimed the good news of Saul's death before their idols and to the people throughout the land of Philistia. 10 They placed his armor in the temple of their gods, and they fastened his head to the temple of Dagon. 11 But when everyone in Jabesh-gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their mighty warriors brought the bodies of Saul and his sons back to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones beneath the great tree at Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days. 13 So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord's command, and he even consulted a medium 14 instead of asking the Lord for guidance. So the Lord killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

They brought them to Jabesh, where they burned the bodies. 13 Then they took their bones and buried them beneath the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days.

“Call on the Name of the LORD” 1 Kings 18:20-24 (NIV) - [20] So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. [21] Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing. [22] Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. [23] Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. [24] Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.” Then all the people said, “What you say is good.” Picture - Mount Carmen and the Valley of Armageddon Revelation 16:12-16 (NIV) - [12] The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings from the East. [13] Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. [14] They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. [15] “Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed.” [16] Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon. “The name Armageddon (or Harmagedon) is probably derived from har (‘mountain,’ ‘hill’) plus Megiddo, which was one of the three cities fortified by Solomon along with Gezer in the south and Hazor in the north (1Ki 9:15). The fortress of Megiddo stood on a hill in the largest pass through the Carmel range, strategically guarding the Jezreel Valley. The city was situated on the Via Maris, the main highway between Egypt and Mesopotamia. Many armies used this route, and the site became known as a bloody battlefield. It was here, for instance, that Pharaoh Neco, on his way to fight the Assyrians, killed Josiah (2Ki 23:29). Armaggedon thus became a symbolic term epitomizing the final conflict between God and the forces of evil. (NLT Study Bible) 1. As the End draws near, call on the Name of the LORD. 2. When you are wavering, call on the Name of the LORD. “The Hebrew word translated waver means ‘to be lame’ or ‘to limp.’ Elijah compared the people's hobbling between the worship of the LORD and of Baal to a person who limps awkwardly from one foot to the other. Elijah may have also been referring to the ritual dance performed by Baal's prophets as they attempted to gain the storm god's attention. (NLT Study Bible) 1 Kings 18:26 (NLT) - [26] So they prepared one of the bulls and placed it on the altar. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning until noontime, shouting, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no reply of any kind. Then they danced, hobbling around the altar they had made. “Elijah placed a clear choice before the people. He drew a sharp contrast between the worship of the Lord and that of Baal to eliminate the apostate idea that people could worship both deities.” (NIV Study Bible) 3. When your heart is divided, call on the Name of the LORD. Psalms 86:11 (NIV) - [11] Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. Ezekiel 11:17-19 (NIV) - [17] “Therefore say: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will gather you from the nations and bring you back from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you back the land of Israel again.' [18] “They will return to it and remove all its vile images and detestable idols. [19] I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. James 1:5-8 (NIV) - [5] If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. [6] But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. [7] That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; [8] he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does. 4. When you feel alone, call on the Name of the LORD. 1 Kings 19:14-15, 18 (NIV) - [14] He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” [15] The LORD said to him… [18] “Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him.” 1 Kings 18:36-39 (NIV) - [36] At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. [37] Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” [38] Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. [39] When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!” 5. For the fire to fall, call on the Name of the LORD. Acts 2:1-4 (NIV) - [1] When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. [2] Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. [3] They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. [4] All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Should I Stay or Should I Go  (Judges 4:1-3) So you don't think your sin is a big deal (4:2)? Who knew such a little conjunction could carry such weight?  Learn a harsh lesson from Israel, the covenant people of God—those who experienced his loving-kindness. They again did even, so the Lord gave them over to desires of their hearts. Listento Israel—there is no sin in your life, whether small or large, that does not have consequence. The wages of sin- any sin- is always death. Israel's sin had a natural consequence. Jabin of Hazor harshly oppressed God's community for twenty years. Jabin hailed from Hazor, the most powerful city in northern Canaan, and today its remains are the most prominent ancient ruins in modern Israel. Jabin's expert commander was a man named Sisera—most likely a Hittite or Philistine mercenary. Sisera was a capable and ruthless man, a killing machine. At his disposal were 900 iron chariots. These vehicles were the latest military hardware and gave the Canaanites superiority in the Jezreel valley. Chariots were not used to break through enemy lines but to pursue and slaughter the fleeing enemy.  For Israel, 900 iron chariots were the ultimate instrument of fear and oppression. It was a reminder that no one could escape. In like manner, you can never run away from the chariots of righteous judgment. You can't run and ignore iniquity; you must confront it face to face. And God does just that. Salvation comes from the most unexpected places. Salvation comes from the most unexpected place (4:4-5). Now we meet Deborah “bee,” the wife of Lappidoth and a judge. She is a female prophet in the line of Miriam, Huldah, and Anna (NT). The hope for Israel lies not in a man of conquest but a female judge. Deborah is a reminder that the Lord gives a voice to the voiceless. Women in the ANE were seen as insignificant. Yet, Yahweh displays his power through the marginalized. We see Deborah sitting under a tree in Ramah and Bethel. It's interesting that while Jabin sat enthroned in might over Canaan, hope was sitting under a tree. Salvation comes from the most unexpected places. Notice where Deborah is not— Bethel/Shiloh (the place where the ark rested). Instead, she is sitting under the palm tree in the hill country, a location easily accessible for almost every Israelite. Thus, the Lord's salvation is open to all who come, because His grace is easily assessable by faith. One day while sitting and judging, Barak is summoned. His name means lightning, suggesting he has hero potential. Yahweh chooses a man named lightening to one day defeat the Canaanites- whose chief deity was Baal. ANE inscriptions picture Baal riding on storm clouds—in one hand a club of thunder and in the other a spear of lightning. The One True God raises a local man Barak (lightning), to defeat the idolatry of Baal, and show there is no other god but Yahweh! Salvation comes from the most unexpected places. [Pause] Here is what we know: Yahweh commanded Barak to fight from victory up on Mt. Tabor, a fact that Barak never disputes. And Barak responds to Deborah's directive, “I'll go if you go.” In one breath, the commander said, “I will go” and “I will not go.” Not a great start for our leader. Yahweh accomplishes His purposes through flawed individuals (4:8). Barak is the first judge who exhibits a reluctance to lead. Twice Deborah had to remind him of the Lord's call and command (4:6 and 4:14). Have you ever felt like Barak? Knowing what the Lord requires and yet on the fence? Struggling, “should I stay or should I go?” Maybe for you, that is salvation, baptism, call to missionary work or pastoral ministry, sharing the Gospel, or turning away from sin. Yet, despite Yahweh's assurance of victory, Barak resists the call to go. Deborah said she would go, but Barak would receive no honor because the Lord would sell Sisera to a woman. This is not Deborah saying that Barak fights like a girl. Instead, the honor would go to a non-soldier (woman). Salvation comes from the most unexpected places. Ultimately Deborah went up with Barak, and the Lord gave Israel victory that day. The Canaanites fled, and Sisera ran. He ran into a tent of a lady named Jael, who killed him when he was sleeping. This story is immortalized in the song of Deborah—one of the most ancient works in the Hebrew Bible. But that is not the end of Barak. Heb 11:32  And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets, 33, who by faith conquered kingdoms. If you ever felt hesitant to do what the Lord wanted, and now you feel useless, let Barak be a constant reminder that God accomplishes his flawless purposes through flawed individuals. By faith, Barak won God's approval, and you can too! Let's go back to the battle (4:4:12-15). As directed by the Lord, through Deborah, Barak went up to Mt. Tabor. Today, Mt. Tabor in the Galilee region is one of the best places to paraglide in Israel. This mountain sits above the Jezreel Valley and controls one of the most critical crossroads in the region. Something strange happened on Mt. Tabor (4:14). Sisera goes up as Barak goes down, and the Lord throws Sisera into a panic so that the entire army flees on foot (not chariot). I told you that salvation comes from unexpected places. It was not Barak that received glory, but the Lord who threw the Canaanites into a panic—the standard OT phrase for Yah routing his enemies. Spiritual victory is not accomplished from the earth up but from heaven down. Sisera went up the mountain, and the Lord came down.  As Deborah sang about that day, “ Judges 5:20 the stars fought from the heavens; the stars fought with Sisera from their paths … March on, my soul, in strength! On that day, salvation was found on Mt. Tabor. Many years later, Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain (Mt. Tabor is the traditional site of the transfiguration) by themselves. 2 He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it's good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Matt 17:5  While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified. Salvation came to Israel in the valley because the Lord delivered His people on the mountain. In the same way, salvation comes to you when you recognize that His beloved Son is the way, truth, and life. Salvation comes from unexpected places. On Mt. Tabor, Jesus revealed his glory to the disciples so that they would believe by faith. Later, Jesus would reveal his glory on a cross—a cursed instrument of Roman execution. Jesus went to the cross because there was no other way for sinners to reconcile to the Father. Salvation is found in unexpected places: a manger, a cross, and an empty tomb. It is by faith that Barak won God's approval. In the same way today you can have God's approval:, 8For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift— 9 not from works so that no one can boast. God's approval is not found in what you do, but what Jesus did for you. Salvation comes from the most unexpected place—the cross of Calvary.   Don't you think your sin is a big deal? Look to the cross. Feel useless? Yahweh accomplished His purposes through flawed individuals Reluctant? You can't go back, but you can obey Him today.

Mascall published several books; all were aimed at household management. In 1572 Leonardpublished A Booke of the Arte and Maner Howe to Plante and Graffe All Sortes of Trees. Along with cultivating fruit trees, this book was the first to refer to the secateurs or a pruning knife. The word secateurs is taken from the Latin secare, ‘to cut.’ Mascall's last book was published a year after he died, and it was called The Booke of Engines and Traps. In it, Leonard shared 34 traps and nine recipes for poison bates, most of which were dedicated to trapping mice. But Leonard also wrote about how to control slugs and snails in the garden - he described picking them off by hand early in the morning. While I was researching Leonard Mascall, I came across a bit of his advice regarding the placement of tender trees and shrubs from The Guardian (www.theguardian.com), Dec 9, 1891: "Leonard Mascall said, 'Most part of trees do love the sun at noon, and yet the south wind is very contrary against their nature, and specially the almond tree, the apricot, the mulberry, the fig tree, the pomegranate tree.' A gardener remarked: 'I am sure there is much in this. It is quite certain that all Japanese trees like shade and a north aspect; and the finest most fruitful old mulberry tree that I have ever seen is at Rochester, growing in a corner where it looks to the north and east, and is thoroughly protected from the south and west.'"   May 10, 1725  Today is the birthday of the botanist, famous professor, and founder of one of the leading botanical gardens in Europe — John Hope. Alive during the Scottish enlightenment, John left his mark on the royal botanic gardens, plant classification, and plant physiology. He was appointed as the King's botanist for Scotland and superintendent of the Royal Garden in Edinburgh. John worked to expand the space of the Royal Botanic Garden, and he turned it into a place for research. During John’s lifetime, Edinburgh was THE place to study medicine, and all medical students had to take botany courses. John created a school for botanists after spinning off the materia medica (pharmacy) department of the school, which allowed him to specialize exclusively in botany. John’s students traveled to Edinburgh from all over the world. All in, John taught over 1,700 students during his tenure — and they included the likes of James Edward Smith (the founder and first President of the Linnaean Society), Charles Drayton (the future Lt. Governor of South Carolina), Benjamin Rush (a signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder of Dickinson College), and Archibald Menzies, who became the Scottish botanist and explorer. By all accounts, John was a captivating instructor. He was one of the first two people to teach the Linnaean system. John also taught the natural system. And, he pioneered the use of big teaching diagrams or visual aids to teach his lectures. A field botanist, John encouraged his students to go out and investigate the Flora of Scotland, and he awarded a medal every year to the student who collected the best herbarium. With John's accomplishments came impressive wealth. When John died, he had amassed more than £12,000, which he had left for his wife. Today the genus Hopea is named after John Hope. And, there’s a magnificent beech tree that grows near the John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.   Unearthed Words You cannot have too many aconites. They cost, as I said before, about fifty shillings a thousand. A thousand will make a brave splash of color, which lasts a month. If you can afford ten thousand, you are mad not to buy them. There are so many exciting places you can put them. . . in the hollow of a felled tree, by the border of a pond, in a circle round a statue, or immediately under your window, so that you can press your nose against the glass when it is too cold to go out, and stare at them, and remember that spring is on its way. ― Beverley Nichols, Down the Garden Path   Grow That Garden Library My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Notes from a Writer's Eden. In this charmingly illustrated book, Meir shares his garden that lies on the perimeter of Israel’s Jezreel Valley, with the Carmel mountains rising up in the west. Meir’s garden is “neither neatly organized nor well kept,” and he adores his lemon tree, figs, and rescuing plants like a purple snapdragon from the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway.   Mitch Ginsburg of The Times of Israel wrote this after reading Meir’s book: “I went to sleep every night with the smell of fresh figs and lemons and the sound of birdsong in my ears and the image of Shalev’s beloved black cat, Kramer, the hero of many of his Hebrew children’s stories, sleeping the day away beneath the buckthorn tree.” Meir’s book starts out with a little story about the time he awoke to find a wedding party trampling his garden as they posed for photos. After the group insisted his garden couldn’t possibly be a real garden, he let them know they had three minutes before the sprinkler system turned on. Clever man. They left. He didn’t have a sprinkler system. This book is full of stories like this, and they feature marvelous topics like lupines, cyclamen, poppies, sea squill, a mole rat, a wasp nest, and compost - just to name a few. This book is 304 pages of garden bliss from a novelist who shares his garden with wit and love. You can get a copy of My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $21   Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart It's the birthday of scientist Cecelia Payne who discovered while still in graduate school that stars are made largely of the two lightest chemical elements – hydrogen and helium; she was born in 1900. And Celia decided her fate when she was just eight years old - that’s when she decided to become a scientist. She had been walking in an orchard when she suddenly recognized a plant she had heard her mother describe – the plant that looks like a bumble: the bee orchid. Later she recalled her excitement at seeing the plant the first time: “For the first time I knew the leaping of the heart, the sudden enlightenment, that were to become my passion… These moments are rare, and they come without warning, on ‘days to be marked with a white stone’.” And it is Cecelia Payne who said these wonderful quotes: “An admission of ignorance may well be a step to a new discovery.” And then this one (which harkened back to Payne's discovery of the bee orchid). “The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or understand something.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

This will illustrate how Israel has acted like a prostitute by turning against the Lord and worshiping other gods.” 3 So Hosea married Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she became pregnant and gave Hosea a son. 4 And the Lord said, “Name the child Jezreel, for I am about to punish King Jehu’s dynasty to avenge the murders he committed at Jezreel. In fact, I will bring an end to Israel’s independence. 5 I will break its military power in the Jezreel Valley.” 6 Soon Gomer became pregnant again and gave birth to a daughter. And the Lordsaid to Hosea, “Name your daughter Lo-ruhamah—‘Not loved’—for I will no longer show love to the people of Israel or forgive them. 7 But I will show love to the people of Judah. I will free them from their enemies—not with weapons and armies or horses and charioteers, but by my power as the Lord their God.” 8 After Gomer had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she again became pregnant and gave birth to a second son.

Click here to download this podcast When a person takes their walk with Jesus seriously and they truly begin to believe, “I am a son or daughter of God and I am going to live like it", they set themselves against the powers of darkness and they set themselves apart from everyone around them except those who have made the same choice. At that point you have set yourself apart exclusively for God’s use. That is what the Apostle Paul was describing when he wrote to the believers in Rome. “I beseech you, therefore brethren, by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God which your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2 NKJV). Mary of Nazareth had a similar experience when God asked her dedicate her body exclusively for His use. The angel Gabriel was “sent by God to a city of Galilee name Nazareth.” Gabriel’s greeting startled Mary, just as it would you and me. "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!" (Luke 1:28 NKJV) She had found favor with God. Have You Had a Mary Experience? Mary was just an ordinary young woman living in a small village on the side of a mountain, in Galilee, overlooking the Jezreel Valley. There was nothing she did to earn or to deserve this honor. God chose Mary and gave her favor, the same as He chose the Patriarch Abraham and gave him favor. Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness. God chose Mary and gave her favor. She believed God and it was counted to her for righteousness. God has chosen you and given you favor. “[J]ust as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:4-7 NKJV). Why would God choose you? The Scripture explains, “according to the good pleasure of His will.” You didn’t earn it. You certainly don’t deserve it. God chose you because He loves you and because He wanted to choose you. He chose you to be holy, without condemnation and to be in a face to face relationship with Him. He made you acceptable and gave you favor by redeeming you from the slave market of sin and adopting you into His family as a son or daughter. “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you…” Mary and Joseph had to wrestle with many things when they began walking this out. Just like you have to wrestle with many things when you make the decision in your life to live authentically sold out as a child of God. If Gabriel’s greeting startled Mary, his message must have flooded her with anxiety. "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS” (Luke 1:30-31 NKJV). “That not possible,” she responded, “I am a good girl. I am still pure and have never been immoral.” God knew that, Gabriel assured her. This would not be a natural conception. Gabriel continued, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35 NKJV). That sounds amazing, but “with God nothing will be impossible.” Mary would literally carry God in her womb. Every day she lived for nine months, every place she went, every conversation she had, God was within her. Imagine, placing her hands on her tummy and feeling God move within her. It is challenging to grasp when you are born again that God, Himself, takes up residence within your body. When you repent and ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sin and make you a new creation, the Holy Spirit comes upon you and the power of the Highest overshadows you and you are born again “through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5; Romans 8:9-11). Every day you live, every place you go, every conversation you have, God is in you. It may seem impossible for you to live that kind of life. Maybe you come from a narcotics addiction or alcoholic background. Maybe you have not Christian background and it just seems impossible. Remember, “With God nothing will be impossible.” When Mary said, "Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38 NKJV), she could not take it back, no matter how difficult it became. Four months into it she could not say, this is much harder than I ever dreamed, I don’t want to do this anymore. She may feel that way emotionally and those thoughts may go through her mind, but she would have to learn how to make quality choices to deal with the challenges that came her way. There were choices she would make because she loved God and was sold out to Him for a life time. Imagine her conversation with Joseph, explaining her condition. How do you tell your mother and father and your siblings, you expecting a child and it is a miracle and you really are still a virgin? How do you tell your best friends, “In a few weeks it will look like I’ve gained weight; I am expecting a child and it is by the power of Almighty God. I’ve not been with Joseph or any other man.” She would face the ridicule and rejection of her closest friends and the neighbors of that small community. They would not understand. There are other aspects that would require loving obedience. The marriage covenant with Joseph could not be consummated for more than nine months after their wedding. They would have to face being ostracized by the synagogue and by relatives who did not understand and would not accept “the obvious.” Walking out authentic discipleship; living a holy life as a son or daughter who carries God where ever you go and in every conversation will require loving choices that many will not understand and may bring ridicule and even rejection. God wants you to make a commitment to keep your body exclusively for Him until He brings that man or that woman with whom you will make the covenant of marriage; and then not until the wedding night when the covenant has been made. God wants you to have eyes only for your covenant partner and that will limit the magazines you read, the web sites you visit, the movies you watch, and the music selection to which you listen. Relatives, best friends, and coworkers will not understand the change in your behavior. Your boyfriend, girlfriend, or fiancé may not accept the change. You will suffer ridicule and maybe even rejection. There is no turning back, no quit, just because it gets rough and difficult. This is where you learn to find joy in suffering for Christ’s sake. Do not fear child of God. Strengthen your faith in the one who chose you. You can live this out by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within you. You have found favor with God. You have been chosen to be His son or His daughter. He has redeemed you and adopted you into His family. He lives in you and has blessed you with all spiritual blessings in Heavenly places. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 "but of the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I write to you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. I believe strongly that God desires we keep our focus on the Middle East. No matter what your position on eschatology, the end of history will occur in this region. The campaign of Armageddon will be in the Jezreel Valley of Israel and that campaign will involve all major world powers. So, it matters to us what is occurring in this region. In this Perspective, I want to review recent developments in the region.
