In this very special episode, Simon shares the top five tips collected from the top five performers on his Property Magic mastermind course - the techniques and strategies that others have adopted and utilised in order to power their way to investment success! KEY TAKEAWAYS Ensure that you follow the process exactly. When you have a formula, stick to the plan and follow the guidance all the way through. Follow up! Always make sure you come back after any offer to see what's happening. This shows diligence on your part and can ultimately save (and earn) you money. Keep that momentum going. By doing one thing a day in order to keep things moving, you'll make sure that the process is always ongoing. Sense-check your deals with other, experienced investors. If you find a great deal but you're unsure, sense-checking can give you the confidence to move forward. BEST MOMENTS 'There's some real golden nuggets here!' Resources CEO of UPS in NY times Lego makes strides in sustainability TakeawaysTwo sides of the same coin: Purpose & brand experience Health systems need to approach branding differently than they have in the past to compete with powerful consumer brands establishing footholds in healthcare. One of the ways systems can embark on a new path is by rethinking "purpose.'Most health systems and hospitals assume they have purpose down pat – after all, they save lives every day. But there can be more to purpose.FutureBrand looks at the balance of purpose and brand experience. To them, purpose means nothing if it is not substantiated through a brand experience – regardless of audience.Redefining brand purpose What brand purpose is: A promise lived in every action or engagement – it has many hands, many stories, and is felt by all of your customers and employees. It is the tangible and enduring mark a brand leaves on the world, how it lives in the world, and makes it better than it found it.What brand purpose isn't: A compulsory mission statement on your website, a promise you make 1-2 times a year in a campaign or activation, or the words that are referred to now and again in company town halls and stakeholder presentations. What it means to be a sustainable brand COVID-19 and climate concerns have up-leveled what sustainability means today.Sustainability is no longer taking siloed actions for the good of the planet; instead, it's a full-court press to improve the well-being of the planet, the lives of people who live on it.Brand purpose goes beyond consumer experienceThe difference between a high-performing brand and a low-performing brand depends on the brand's ability to balance purpose and experience. The P&G brand does this well by actively living up to its corporate promise of "Touching lives, improving lives."A brand-led approach lessens the need to react to heightened public expectations.

Mascall published several books; all were aimed at household management. In 1572 Leonardpublished A Booke of the Arte and Maner Howe to Plante and Graffe All Sortes of Trees. Along with cultivating fruit trees, this book was the first to refer to the secateurs or a pruning knife. The word secateurs is taken from the Latin secare, ‘to cut.’ Mascall's last book was published a year after he died, and it was called The Booke of Engines and Traps. In it, Leonard shared 34 traps and nine recipes for poison bates, most of which were dedicated to trapping mice. But Leonard also wrote about how to control slugs and snails in the garden - he described picking them off by hand early in the morning. While I was researching Leonard Mascall, I came across a bit of his advice regarding the placement of tender trees and shrubs from The Guardian (www.theguardian.com), Dec 9, 1891: "Leonard Mascall said, 'Most part of trees do love the sun at noon, and yet the south wind is very contrary against their nature, and specially the almond tree, the apricot, the mulberry, the fig tree, the pomegranate tree.' A gardener remarked: 'I am sure there is much in this. It is quite certain that all Japanese trees like shade and a north aspect; and the finest most fruitful old mulberry tree that I have ever seen is at Rochester, growing in a corner where it looks to the north and east, and is thoroughly protected from the south and west.'"   May 10, 1725  Today is the birthday of the botanist, famous professor, and founder of one of the leading botanical gardens in Europe — John Hope. Alive during the Scottish enlightenment, John left his mark on the royal botanic gardens, plant classification, and plant physiology. He was appointed as the King's botanist for Scotland and superintendent of the Royal Garden in Edinburgh. John worked to expand the space of the Royal Botanic Garden, and he turned it into a place for research. During John’s lifetime, Edinburgh was THE place to study medicine, and all medical students had to take botany courses. John created a school for botanists after spinning off the materia medica (pharmacy) department of the school, which allowed him to specialize exclusively in botany. John’s students traveled to Edinburgh from all over the world. All in, John taught over 1,700 students during his tenure — and they included the likes of James Edward Smith (the founder and first President of the Linnaean Society), Charles Drayton (the future Lt. Governor of South Carolina), Benjamin Rush (a signer of the Declaration of Independence and founder of Dickinson College), and Archibald Menzies, who became the Scottish botanist and explorer. By all accounts, John was a captivating instructor. He was one of the first two people to teach the Linnaean system. John also taught the natural system. And, he pioneered the use of big teaching diagrams or visual aids to teach his lectures. A field botanist, John encouraged his students to go out and investigate the Flora of Scotland, and he awarded a medal every year to the student who collected the best herbarium. With John's accomplishments came impressive wealth. When John died, he had amassed more than £12,000, which he had left for his wife. Today the genus Hopea is named after John Hope. And, there’s a magnificent beech tree that grows near the John Hope Gateway at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.   Unearthed Words You cannot have too many aconites. They cost, as I said before, about fifty shillings a thousand. A thousand will make a brave splash of color, which lasts a month. If you can afford ten thousand, you are mad not to buy them. There are so many exciting places you can put them. . . in the hollow of a felled tree, by the border of a pond, in a circle round a statue, or immediately under your window, so that you can press your nose against the glass when it is too cold to go out, and stare at them, and remember that spring is on its way. ― Beverley Nichols, Down the Garden Path   Grow That Garden Library My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is Notes from a Writer's Eden. In this charmingly illustrated book, Meir shares his garden that lies on the perimeter of Israel’s Jezreel Valley, with the Carmel mountains rising up in the west. Meir’s garden is “neither neatly organized nor well kept,” and he adores his lemon tree, figs, and rescuing plants like a purple snapdragon from the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway.   Mitch Ginsburg of The Times of Israel wrote this after reading Meir’s book: “I went to sleep every night with the smell of fresh figs and lemons and the sound of birdsong in my ears and the image of Shalev’s beloved black cat, Kramer, the hero of many of his Hebrew children’s stories, sleeping the day away beneath the buckthorn tree.” Meir’s book starts out with a little story about the time he awoke to find a wedding party trampling his garden as they posed for photos. After the group insisted his garden couldn’t possibly be a real garden, he let them know they had three minutes before the sprinkler system turned on. Clever man. They left. He didn’t have a sprinkler system. This book is full of stories like this, and they feature marvelous topics like lupines, cyclamen, poppies, sea squill, a mole rat, a wasp nest, and compost - just to name a few. This book is 304 pages of garden bliss from a novelist who shares his garden with wit and love. You can get a copy of My Wild Garden by Meir Shalev and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $21   Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart It's the birthday of scientist Cecelia Payne who discovered while still in graduate school that stars are made largely of the two lightest chemical elements – hydrogen and helium; she was born in 1900. And Celia decided her fate when she was just eight years old - that’s when she decided to become a scientist. She had been walking in an orchard when she suddenly recognized a plant she had heard her mother describe – the plant that looks like a bumble: the bee orchid. Later she recalled her excitement at seeing the plant the first time: “For the first time I knew the leaping of the heart, the sudden enlightenment, that were to become my passion… These moments are rare, and they come without warning, on ‘days to be marked with a white stone’.” And it is Cecelia Payne who said these wonderful quotes: “An admission of ignorance may well be a step to a new discovery.” And then this one (which harkened back to Payne's discovery of the bee orchid). “The reward of the young scientist is the emotional thrill of being the first person in the history of the world to see something or understand something.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

In this week's '15 Minutes To Action', Nick talks you through the differences between a fixed and a growth mindset, and how they can play the largest role in the shape of your destiny. KEY TAKEAWAYS With the end of the lockdown in sight, people are beginning to feel more optimistic about the future, and the role they will play in it. The mindset in society is shifting towards the positive. We bring to life the things we imagine, whether that's success or position or achievement. We fix our conscious goals towards a point and whether we know it or not, we work towards them. Mindset, fixed or growth, are focussed around beliefs, effort, challenges, mistakes and feedback. Those with a growth mindset believe that failures are lessons, not the ends of something. No-one is always in a growth or fixed mindset phase. The mindset you need at any one time depends upon the things taking place in your life at the time. KEY TAKEAWAYS  The mission in life is to push through challenges together, and create for others. If we can stick to this mission then everything ultimately works out. Sometimes we can consume too much in the way of external direction. This can lead to a confusion in our own direction. We need to stop and follow one single point. Nobody sets out to amass the stress caused by others in business. We set out to achieve our goals. The journey is never as easy as we imagine. Through conflict we build resilience. Many do as they are told when it comes to business, failing to see that by following the path of others, we do not live up to the potential we have. This week, Simon takes a look at the recently announced 2021 budget for the United Kingdom, talks about how the changes may affect your property investment plans, both current and future, and also discusses why maybe the outlook for property investors isn't quite as bad as the media may have led you to believe... KEY TAKEAWAYS Many speculated that capital gains tax would rise in this budget, but that hasn't proven to be the case. It's worth recognising that media speculation can have a negative effect. While many have been fearing the effects of the budget, and feeling anxious about the way in which it could harm investments, the 2021 budget has proven to be not as bad as everyone suspected it might be. The reason the housing market boomed in 2020 was that predictions stated it would collapse, causing the government to cleverly introduce the stamp duty holiday and the furlough scheme. With the furlough scheme extended again until later in 2021, we are set to see a boom in leisure and hospitality this summer when lockdown eases. It's a smart move by the government BEST MOMENTS  'That money has to be paid back at some point, so everyone knows that taxes are going to have to go up in the future' 'I actually think that this budget has been very, very clever' 'I was very surprised by the property boom in 2020, given everything that's happened in the economy' 'Most people actually had more money than they had before' VALUABLE RESOURCES Property Magic: How to Buy Property Using Other People's Time, Money and Experience by Simon Zutshi To find your local pin meeting visit: www.PinMeeting.co.uk and use voucher code PODCAST to attend you first meeting as Simon's guest (instead of paying the normal £20). iphone:  http://bit.ly/pinAPP1 Android https://bit.ly/pinAPP2 Register at Mindset For Property at - www.mindsetforproperty.co.uk  ABOUT THE HOST Simon Zutshi, experienced investor, successful entrepreneur and best-selling author, is widely recognised as one of the top wealth creation strategists in the UK. Lucinda is joined by special guest Perry Timms, founder and Chief Energy Officer of PTHR, for a timely conversation about the topic of energy and how we can invigorate and maintain the energy in our teams. Essentially, so that we can better face the challenges of the year ahead with an energised workplace!  KEY TAKEAWAYS Certainly, learning is a wonderful source of energy. We feel a sense of dynamic invigoration when we develop - almost like levelling up. It's not about fixing people. We should be seeking to fix the system itself. Thus enabling a trickling down of energy that invigorates our workforce. Energy begins with freedom. Indeed, many feel trapped in their job or their workplace. Furthermore, invigoration comes through granting people a sense of freedom, by dismantling barriers and encouraging imagination. Indeed, we sometimes waste the talents of a person by slotting them into roles that do not make full use of that talent. Therefore, we should always seek to tailor the person to the role. 'Energy is a premium resource' 'Most people are caged in their work' 'When we acquire new skills, when we force our self into new frontiers, our energy raises' 'There's a thing called the IKEA effect where you love what you build - that's what I want to see people do more'  VALUABLE RESOURCES The HR Uprising Podcast | Apple | Spotify | Stitcher   Host of The HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, where you can find additional free HR Resources: https://actus.co.uk/free-performance-management-resources/ The HR Uprising LinkedIn Group 5 Steps to Boost Employee Energy - Actus Software Virtual Training: How to be a Change Superhero Virtual People Management Accelerate Potential Change Superhero Resources: Book: How To Be A Change Superhero – by Lucinda Carney Free Change Toolkit: www.changesuperhero.com How to Prioritise Self-Care (The HR Uprising) Latest Performance Management Blog ABOUT THE GUEST Perry Timms is the founder and Chief Energy Officer of PTHR - an 8-person global consultancy, setting out to create better business for a better world. Somayeh Aghnia, the founder of Geeks Ltd, is a true powerhouse in the world of growing business through technology. In this week's show, Gavin talks to Somayeh about the ways in which we can create a digital-first culture in our organisations, as well as the practical ways in which she has enabled businesses to scale through tech-based strategies. KEY TAKEAWAYS Digital solutions for any business depend on the client business characteristic, the kind of profile the business currently has, and their understanding of how tech adaptation works. Technology budgets must always divided into three parts - the funds required to keep things running efficiently, funds for growth, and research and development funds. These should be adjusted accordingly depending on future ambitions. One of the fastest growing trends in technology right now is the automation of the basics. This area has long held back the scale ambitions of SMEs. Far too many businesses still operate using outdated and un-scaleable methodologies that hold them back from true growth. In the next five years, digital transformation will allow these businesses to achieve growth and agility. BEST MOMENTS 'We create a roadmap for the digital transformation journey' 'Most companies don't know what kind of problems they are actually solving' 'Surprisingly, there are still a lot of businesses operating with paper!' Episode 5: Do you already feel like a failure?  Two actions to avoid failing and/or feeling like you are failing: Be aware of the expected obstacles   Obstacle 1: Unwillingness to Commit This is one of the biggest challenges This causes failure to follow through This sets you up for failure before you even begin “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” John Wooden  Reflection Question: Do I have an unwillingness to commit already in 2021?   Question: Why would someone take the time to set goals for their organization, if they were unwilling to commit to them?  Answer: Although you want to achieve your goals, they are not convenient… that’s why they are goals If you are really committed to reaching your goals, you will do what you have to do, no matter what We are more interested in reaching our goals, yet we are not willing to commit to reaching those goals. It’s not that we don’t want them. It’s that we don’t want to do the things to commit to getting those things done.  As soon the going gets tough, we don’t get going. We give up? Question: What are the pitfalls for a leader who is unwilling to commit to THEIR goals? Answer:  Leaders are so entrenched in what they are trying to do with their own personal goals that they forget about the bigger picture.  The tough part about being a leader is that you are not just committed to your goals, you are committed to the goals of the people that follow you.  Reflection Question 2: Am I really committed to reaching my goals in 2021?   Obstacle 2: Being afraid to step out of your comfort zone We like doing what we are good at already Leaders do the stuff that others won’t do "You must be willing to do the things today others won't do, in order to have the things tomorrow others won't have." Les Brown Action point: Do something different. If you are not getting the raise that you want at work, do something new. If you’re not used to speaking up, speak up. Take responsibility for your own actions. The worst thing that you can do is to take no action.  You need to go against that conventional wisdom that the little voice in your head is telling you. Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100% of the shots that you do not take.” Make the decision today to give it another shot, to give it your best shot. You are not in control of your circumstances but you are in control of your attitude and the actions you take.  Wayne Gretzky was not only a great scorer, but also a great leader to his teammates.  He is the one who also said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” -Wayne Gretzky.   Know how to respond to them  Question: What do leaders need to learn about responding to the expected obstacles? Answer:  Learn to be your own catalyst. Nobody cares about you as much as you care about you.  Motivation comes and goes. “Successful people do all the things that unsuccessful people don’t want to do.” -Paul Michell Reflection Question 3: Are you willing to work when you don’t want to work anymore?   Tim Tebow Story: Took responsibility as the leader. Committed to work harder than everyone else.  Action Point: Learn to build habits. Read the book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey. “To change ourselves effectively, we first had to change our perceptions.” - Unknown Believe you can do it. Be a little bit unrealistic. Set your goals a little bit bigger then you will be able to accomplish on your own. Don’t get this confused. I am not saying to put goals down that are TOTALLY unrealistic… but just enough to make you work for it “'Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” -Bill Gates Question: What if someone doesn’t know if they can do it and doesn’t have people in their life that believe in them?  Answer: I have enough people who criticize me. I need more cheerleaders. Those are the people I bring into the process.  Leaders don’t do anything alone.  Leaders need other people. Action Point: Remove people in your life that are not the cheerleaders. Gently and lovingly put distance between yourself and other people that are not on your team.  Reflection Question 4: Are you doing the things in life right now that are helping you to understand what it means to be the best you? Are you bringing those people along with you to help you get those things done? What is your team? How does it look? What are you doing to better that team on a daily basis?   Mo’s Final Thoughts: If you are already asking, “Am I a failure?”, the answer to that is, “No! Be ready for the obstacles and be ready to respond to them appropriately. We will get through this journey together. You are not failing. You are doing great. Just take the next step.    Special thanks to: –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Work it out by LiQWYD https://soundcloud.com/liqwyd  Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0  Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/l_work-it-out Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/erSmdVocHO0 ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

There have been some prime examples of great leadership this year, but there have also been areas where leadership has been found wanting. In this week's show, Gavin talks to author and featured TedX speaker, Jason Treu, about leadership, the best ways in which we can show up, and the responsibilities and opportunities that all leaders have in this new world of business.  KEY TAKEAWAYS At the outset of the pandemic, leaders went above and beyond in ensuring workers felt valued, secure and provided-for. This produced a galvanising effect that brought people together with one true aim and purpose. As leaders we should never be too proud to call in an outside perspective. This can grant us the new outlook we need in order to push through our instilled view of our abilities. Plans for scale-up in your business are directly tied to your abilities as a leader. If you inspire and encourage, then your business will organically grow as a result. There is no standard blueprint for traversing our way through the challenges of leadership. We have to take our circumstances into account on a personal basis - everything from family to mental health. BEST MOMENTS 'What you believe in your head, other people don't see, because your perceptions are off' 'The ultimate role of leadership is how effectively you can scale your business' 'Most of the time it's not how smart people are' 'There is no blueprint for every person' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Business Mastermind Podcast  Get your copy of Survive And Thrive NOW at https://www.surviveandthrive.cc Keep Your Boat Afloat - https://www.survivetothrive.biz/keep-afloat gavin@gavinpreston.com   Jason Treu - https://jasontreu.com Jason Treu LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasontreu/ Jason Treu Twitter - https://twitter.com/jasontreu?lang=en ABOUT THE HOST Gavin Preston Gavin is an inspirational Speaker, Business Strategist, Business Growth Mentor, Trainer and high-performance Coach.  He works with Business Owners and Entrepreneurs and has a strong track record in creating creative strategies to accelerate the growth of their business. In this week's show, Lyn talks to transformational relationship and divorce coach, Maxine Clancy, a specialist in using a combination of practical coaching skills, spiritual psychology and neuroscience to help people transform their heartache and fulfil their potential in love and life. Maxine discusses the value in harnessing our internal source of creativity and energy, our highest power that guides us through our emotional journey, and how to use this incredibly empowering force to attract and create lasting love and happiness. KEY TAKEAWAYS The more we are connected to our inner source of power and radiance, the more peace and fulfillment we create for ourselves. We must grow from within, in order to gain mastery over our life. Everybody's life is built upon the story of why we are the way we are. Divorce is often seen as a sign of failure, but this is all a matter of perspective. To free ourselves from the pain of unhappiness actually demonstrates great strength. Life will always provide opportunities to grow. Sometimes they look like adversity, barriers or challenges. But there are positives to take from every situation. Every moment is a learning opportunity that makes us better. At the end of any relationship, we take away empowering lessons about not just love, but ourselves. This enhanced awareness allows us to make more informed decisions and choices next time. BEST MOMENTS 'All relationship experiences are an opportunity for growth' 'Most of us are afraid of our own inner power' 'It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us' 'If you're behaving like a doormat, then people will walk all over you'  VALUABLE RESOURCES Hearts Entwined Podcast Apple Podcasts (iTunes) Spotify Stitcher ABOUT THE GUEST Maxine Clancy is a coach who facilitates workshops and creates online courses to help female professionals transform their heartache and fulfil their potential in love and life. Daily Devotion - John 8:58 - Jesus is the Great I Am"Jesus said to them before 'Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." John 8:58Have you ever said something that made a group of religious people so mad that they picked up stones to throw at you? Don't worry I haven't done that either. I have preached many times and I can say that I have not ever faced that at all.In John 8 Jesus said something that completely makes the Jews of His day erupt in anger. They become so angry they try to stone Him, but Jesus escaped. They ask if Jesus viewed Himself greater than Abraham. Jesus' response was that He wasn't honoring Himself but rather the Father and that the Father honors Him. Jesus tells them they don't know the Father but He does.Verses 56-58 read "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad. Then the Jews said to Him, 'You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."After saying this, they became so angry they tried to stone him.Jesus Knew What He SaidJesus didn't make a mistake by saying this. He knew exactly the repercussions of his words. He knew what was going to happen and He concealed himself in escape as the Jews tried to kill him.The reaction of the Pharisees proves they understood Jesus was claiming to be the very God that showed himself to Abraham and Moses. This secures my soul as I can rest in the fact Jesus is God. He is either who He said He was or He is not.Accepting the Great I AmIt was at Freeway Ministries 5 years ago I placed my faith and trust in Jesus. Part of that was initially trusting He is God. To this day I still find peace in knowing Jesus is God.In the midst of this season, there is restlessness, fear, extreme viewpoints, and other things that show great unrest. But I can rest in Jesus being God. I don't have to fear the unknown. I can have the assurance that parries all anxiety, assurance that brings about peace and allows me to rest at night. That assurance is knowing Jesus is The Great I Am.Read the full devotion at https://devotableapp.com/daily-devotion-john-858-jesus-is-the-great-i-am/

Back Pain During Pregnancyback pain during pregnancy'Most pregnant women experience back pain, typically starting in the second half of pregnancy. Most women feel pain in their lower back, in the posterior pelvic region or lower lumbar region.Posterior pelvic pain is the more common of the two and is a deep pain felt below and at the sides of the waistline, on one or both sides of your buttocks or at the back of your thighs. It can be experienced on one or both sides of your body.Lumbar pain occurs in the area of the lumbar vertebrae in your lower back, at and above the waist in the center of the back. The pain may radiate to your leg. Lumbar pain during pregnancy feels similar to lower back pain you may have experienced before you were pregnant.Back pain during pregnancy can range from mild pain caused by specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic back pain over time. Women with pre-existing lower back problems or chronic pain are at a higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in pregnancy. How Often Does Back Pain During Pregnancy Happen?Back pain during pregnancy is extremely common. It is estimated between 50 and 70 percent of pregnant women experience back pain. What Are Some Symptoms of Back Pain During Pregnancy? The symptoms of back pain during pregnancy are very similar to the symptoms of back pain prior to pregnancy. Some of the symptoms include:Pain in the center of your backPain above or at the sides of the waistlinePain over the pubic bonePain in the buttocks or thighsPain that can radiate to the legsStiffness or discomfort after sitting or standing for long period of timeWhat Are Some Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy? There are several reasons why you may experience back pain during pregnancy. Sone of the most common causes include:Weight gain: As you gain weight during pregnancy, the spine has to support that added weight. That change causes lower back pain. The weight of the growing baby and uterus can also put pressure on the blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back, causing pain.Changes in hormones: During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called relaxin that allows ligaments in the pelvic area to relax and joints to loosen in preparation for giving birth. The hormone can cause ligaments that support the spine to loosen as well. This, along with the shifting of joints, can lead to instability and pain.Changes in posture: Poor posture, excessive standing or sitting, and bending over can trigger or increase your back pain. In addition, while you’re pregnant, your center of gravity shifts forward as your uterus and baby grow, causing your posture and the way you move to change. This can result in strain and pain.Stress: Stress can cause muscle tension in the back, resulting in back pain or back spasms. You may experience an increase in back pain during stressful periods of your pregnancy.Chronic back pain prior to pregnancy. How Can Back Pain During Pregnancy Be Treated?Back pain is very common in pregnancy and is usually not serious. While it may not be completely preventable, there are some changes you can make to reduce the severity or frequency of your back pain. Some treatments for back pain include:Exercise: Regular exercise strengthens muscles and boosts flexibility, easing the stress on your spine. Good exercises for reducing back pain i

In this episode, Ryan has the pleasure of interviewing Eleana Kim and Kim Stoker during their visit to Melbourne! We chat about adoptee-run creative hubs in Seoul during the early 2000s including Spy Lounge, Kimura Byul, formally known as Mihee-Nathalie Lemoine, a co-founder of GOA'L and by all accounts a social 'force of nature,' critical adoption studies, activism, kinship, and living in Korea as a non 'standard variety Korean.' 'Most don't know precisely when you were born so you can kind of bond over when did you leave, when were you adopted...you find kinship between your agencies, the year of adoption, all of these different ways and...it was also a way for us to create a new kind of way of being Korean' (Stoker). Eleana Kim is associate professor of anthropology at the University of California, Irvine, and the author of Adopted Territory: Transnational Korean Adoptees and the Politics of Belonging. Kim Stoker is an educator, editor, and poet. Stoker lived and taught in Korea for almost two decades, ten years of which she was actively involved with Adoptee Solidarity Korea, before recently moving back to the States.

Through his work as a writer, editor, and photographer, Terence Byrnes came to know and to photograph many Montreal-based writers throughout their careers. "For ten years, he photographed them in places where they felt at home, but not always at ease. 'Most contemporary literary portraits,' Byrnes says, 'are as highly burnished as Playboy nudes or as homespun as family snapshots. When I made these images, I was an interloper the writers had to react to.” Closer to Home: The Author and the Author Portrait (Vehicule Press, 2008) "fixes its gaze on writers as we seldom see them. These photographs, and the stories that accompany them, were captured where the writers live, work, or play. The result is a series of portraits that take us inside writers' lives and inside the process of making portraits—all served with a touch of refined literary gossip." Sounds like what we did when I met Terry at his home in Montreal to discuss the book. Among other things we talked about status, 'the thinker' gesture, authority and value, books and bricks, Susan Gillis, photographic crews from Toronto, the proliferation of imagery, the convergence of moving and still images, the diminishing role of the professional photographer, eyes, romanticizing crocks, impressions of presence, Roméo Dallaire, interest curiosity and light, postures, the Montreal Review of Books, Photoshop, negative ego, Annie Leibovitz, trust, Avedon in Texas and caring, achieving control over the world, noticing, Ishmael Reed, Robert Frank, contradiction and great art, sexual harassment at Concordia University, Stephen Fry, and selfies.

Join the conversation on the blog (and find the full show notes)by going here https://bit.ly/2LrGU2k ..Thanks for watching/listening!  On this episode, I've put together an audio blog where you follow me around for a day.   I also have quick TV/Movie reviews of:   GLOW season 2 Incredibles 2 Luke Cage season 2 Another look at Star Wars: The Last Jedi   There are spoilers! Finally I discuss two quotes from recent audiobooks/podcasts I've listened to which had an impact on me.   They come from Robin Sharma and Eckhart Tolle.   Quick Reviews   Incredibles 2 review- This movie was wonderful. I felt there was too much focus on Jack-Jack. Not much on Dash. The action in the film was much more dynamic than I expected. Collider Video late last year had a top 50 superhero movies of all time. They ranked the first film movie 7th overall. When I saw this, I said 'What?!' But after viewing the sequel, I appreciate the first one a lot more. These films are fun and heartwarming. I want more with these characters and this world. I love how unique each character looks particularly Rick Dicker played by Jonathan Banks of Breaking Bad fame. Dicker even looks like Banks. Star Wars: The Last Jedi-3rd viewing observations The Last Jedi is now available on Netflix. You can find my original review (with friends) here https://bit.ly/2rxJkHg . This is my 3rd viewing of this movie. I'm still breaking it down and trying to figure out why it's so polarizing to fans. Here are some observations. -Poe Dameron shows no sympathy for the troops which die because of his actions at the beginning of the film. -Luke plays a crazy old master Jedi who will train a young apprentice, similar to Yoda and Luke in Empire Strikes Back -Rey feels she can turn Kylo Ren towards the light side, comparable with Luke and Vader in Return of the Jedi -Rey has a gun turret action sequence in the Millenium Falcon, similar to Han in the Star Wars: A New Hope. This film series has light, fun entries, and dark ones. In the dark category I'd throw in Revenge of the Sith, Empire Strikes Back, and this one. Luke Cage Season 2 review-Pros & Cons Pros -The show was well paced as opposed to the first season which ended(I felt)a few episodes early. -Bushmaster. Great presence and fighting style. Great backstory. Look forward to seeing him again in future seasons -Episode 10. Loved seeing Luke Cage & Iron Fist in an episode together. I'm ready for a six-episode season of Heroes for Hire. Throw in the Daughters of the Dragon in that mini-series too. -I liked that this season acknowledged the events of the Defenders. -The characters in the show were great. Alfre Woodard. This is her show. Theo Rossi is incredible as well. Sahr Ngaujah as Anansi always has a presence when he's on screen. I saw him in Fela on Broadway; he was tremendous there. Reg E. Cathey is always solid, may he r.i.p. Chaz Lamar Shephard as Piranha Jones was funny. Antonique Smith as Nandi was dislikeable. Superlative job by all mentioned. Cons -This show shouldn't be called 'Luke Cage. It should be called 'Mariah Stokes.' She has more screen time than the hero. It's like seeing a Transformers movie. The film series carries the name of the robot race in the title, but the majority of the films are humans running around. -As I said earlier, this season had a better pace than the first, but I felt it was still too long. -Tilda Dillard was beautiful, but I wasn't blown away by her performance. Glow season 2 review -This was Betty Gilpin's season. She presented several shades of this character; Debbie Eagan. Going through a divorce, becoming a producer on the show, being a mother, hashing out her issues with Ruth Wilder(Allison Brie). We go from rooting for her to sympathizing with her, and plain disliking her. Her smile is terrible as well. Wonderful work. -We spent more time with characters which we didn't in the first season like Arthie and the new castmate Yolanda who was sexy and fun. I also like Marc Maron warming up to Allison Brie and building more of a relationship with his daughter Justine. -Allison Brie is the heart of this show. I can't believe how much shit she takes from Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron at the beginning of the season. I enjoyed her taking more of a creative role in the show and finding a love interest. -The runtime and number of episodes are palatable. It left me wanting more. The Netflix Marvel shows should take the similar format. -My only complaint is that the comedy didn't always land with me. Whereas the first season I had more laughs, this season I didn't. This is one of my favorite original Netflix shows. I want more. Bring on season 3.   Two Recent Audio Quotes which Impacted Me    These are two recent pieces of audio that made me think. I want to apply these teachings in my own life. The first one is from Robin Sharma. On his Youtube channel, he has a video called 'How to Fearlessly Speak your Opinion.' Here is a link to the video https://bit.ly/2uuOnr2. The direct section which impacted me is this here: 'A lot of people ask me when I meet them at a live event, or maybe it's online, Robin, I want to speak my truth, but something prevents me from doing it. Maybe it's at the office. Maybe it's in your intimate relationship; maybe it's with your family. I don't know where it is for you, but I wanted to make sure I offered you some valuable insights to help you speak your truth even when your voice shakes.' 'Because ultimately, one of the ways that we can develop self-respect, and one of the ways that you can build self-worth, is speaking your opinion and sharing what's important to you and putting a voice to what you need to say, even if people don't understand you or also if people don't like it.' 'I think it was Dr. Seuss who said, speak authentically. Be real. Be yourself. Share your opinions. And here was his line: "Because those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter." 'And there's a lot of wisdom if you wanted to deconstruct that idea of Dr. Seuss. It's pretty powerful because ultimately, I believe you can say whatever you need to say, so long as you say it with respect. And so if it's with your intimate partner, and there's something that's bothering you, but you want to say it ... First of all, when you say it, it's like you release a pressure valve. You know what most people do in any relationship, they swallow what they need to say, even though it's incredibly important to them. And here's what that does in your professional associations and your relationships.' 'Every time you swallow something you know you needed to say so that you're clear, it builds up. It builds up emotionally. It builds up psychically, and it eventually, that pressure builds up, and finally, it will come out in conflict. It happens at the office. There's a teammate, and you don't say something. Well, here's what bothers me or here's what I need to say, or here was my opinion. Over time, the wound will fester, and it will damage the relationship.' 'And I've seen it so often in home relationships, in personal relationships. A little thing that could have been handled like, "I didn't like the way that you said that to me," or "I wanted to go to do this on the weekend but you wanted to do that, and I didn't feel heard." And rather than just saying it, because most of us don't know how to say it, they don't teach us how to communicate at world class in school; we swallow it because human beings don't like conflict.' 'Because we're tribal, and I don't want to get into the neuroscience and the psychology of tribalism, but we're tribal. That's how we survived thousands of years ago. And so now we do have an instinct hardwired into us, not to have conflict, because we want to fit into the tribe to survive. But if you don't speak your truth, when you know you need to share your opinion, well, you swallow the words. You take the emotions.' 'And here's what it does. It not only then damages the working relationship or the personal relationship. Here is the powerful insight. It hurts your relationship with yourself. And I think in many ways, all lack of success and creativity and productivity in someone's life, comes down to a lack of self-worth.' 'One of the best things you can learn how to do is learn how to honor yourself. Learn how to build self-worth. Learn how to build self-respect. Learn how to build self-love. And one of the best ways to do that is to speak your truth even when the fire is on. ' Hearing this was like a shining light in the dark. How many nights I'd lay awake in bed thinking for hours how a particular co-worker(or friend) may have rubbed me the wrong way. How I can get revenge, make them feel how I'm feeling at the time. Had I used Mr. Sharma's method I could've used that mental energy elsewhere. I love the self-care angle in his message. I interpret as it being vital in getting the unsaid, the resentment out of you. By talking to the individual directly. I found speaking to a confidant or journaling helps as well. The second quote is from an audiobook. Eckhart Tolle's 'Power Of Now.' I also purchased the book as I'm hoping to read through it, highlight other sections and go over them. This is pulled from Chapter 8. 'I always thought that true enlightenment is not possible except through love in a relationship between a man and a woman. Isn't this what makes us whole again? How can one's life be fulfilled until that happens?' 'Is that true in your experience? Has this happened to you?' 'Not yet, but how could it be otherwise? I know that it will happen.' 'In other words, you are waiting for an event in time to save you. Is this not the core error that we have been talking about? Salvation is not elsewhere in place or time. It is here and now.' 'What does that statement mean, "Salvation is here and now?" I don't understand it. I don't even know what salvation means.' 'Most people pursue physical pleasures or various forms of psychological gratification because they believe that those things will make them happy or free them from a feeling of fear or lack.' 'Happiness may be perceived as a heightened sense of aliveness attained through physical pleasure or a more secure and more complete sense of self-attained through some form of psychological gratification. This is the search for salvation from a state of unsatisfactoriness or insufficiency. Invariably, any satisfaction that they obtain is short-lived, so the condition of happiness or fulfillment is usually projected once again onto an imaginary point away from the here and now.' "When I obtain this or I'm free of that, then I will be okay." This is the unconscious mindset that creates the illusion of salvation in the future.' 'True salvation is fulfillment, peace, life in all its fullness. It is to be who you are, to feel within you the good that has no opposite, the joy of being that depends on nothing outside itself. It is perceived not as a moving experience, but as an abiding presence.' 'In theistic language, it is to know God not as something outside you, but as your innermost essence. True salvation is to identify yourself as an inseparable part of the timeless and formless One Life from which all that exists derives its being.' 'True salvation is a state of freedom from fear, from suffering, from a perceived state of lack and insufficiency and, therefore, from all wanting, needing, grasping, and clinging. It is freedom from compulsive thinking, from negativity and, above all, from past and future as a psychological need.' 'Your mind is telling you that you cannot get there from here. Something needs to happen, or you need to become this or that before you can be free and fulfilled. It is saying, in fact, that you need time, that you need to find, sort out, do, achieve, acquire, become or understand something before you can be free or complete.' 'You see time as the means to salvation, whereas, in truth, it is the most significant obstacle to salvation. You think that you can't get there from where and who you are at this moment because you are not yet complete or good enough, but the truth is that here and now is the only point from where you can get there. You get there by realizing that you are there already.' 'You find God the moment you realize that you don't need to seek God, so there's no "only way" to salvation. Any condition can be used, but no particular state is necessary. However, there is only one point of access, the now. There can be no salvation away from this moment.'    Being good enough right now. Not waiting for a person, or buying a thing, to get to where you want to go. I've gone down that route many times where I felt that if I purchased these clothes or this camera or this drone, THEN I will matter. So sad to reflect and acknowledge that being the case. We must go through the journey to reach the destination right?    I do have a slight counter to this point. If there is a skill you want to improve, focusing on that skill and being around a community which nurtures it, will enhance your ability in that area even quicker. But that spark, the vision, the drive resides within us. We light that flame. It all begins with a decision. Listening to audio is my weapon of choice when it comes to education.   Enjoyed this? On this episode I discuss my 6 month experiences with sex workers.   I also chat about my biggest takeaways from Simon Sinek's book 'Start with Why'.   3 new weird stories are covered.    A new mixtape sandwich in between.   Finally a few quick reviews of TV shows/movies I've recently watched. Simon Sinek's 'Start With Why' book.   My Biggest Takeaways. I found Simon Sinek watching Evan Carmicheal's 'Believe' YouTube channel. I was fascinated by Mr. Sinek's book title, 'Start With Why.' The question 'why do we do what we do' fascinates me. If you don't already know, self-help books are my jam. This was more of a business book and a slog to get through at times. Also, Mr. Sinek goes on and on about Apple, Steve Jobs, and their products. Nonetheless, there were some great quotes I pulled from the book. Here are five that spoke to me. -'The example starts to prove that people don't buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it.' pg 41 -'This is one of the primary reasons why teachers tell students to go with their first instinct when taking a multiple-choice test, to trust their gut. The more time spent thinking about the answer, the bigger the risk that it may be the wrong one. Our limbic brains are smart and often know the right thing to do.'pg 58 -'Great companies don't hire skilled people and motivate them, they hire already motivated people and inspire them.' pg 94 -'Most people in the world are HOW-types. Most people are quite functional in the real world and can do their jobs very well. Some may be very successful and even make millions of dollars, they will never build billion-dollar businesses or change the world. HOW-types don't need WHY-types to do well. But WHY-guys, for all their vision and imagination, often get the short end of the stick. Without someone inspired by their vision and the knowledge to make it a reality, most WHY-types end up as starving visionaries, people with all the answers but never accomplishing much themselves.' pg 141 -'The reason so many small businesses fail, however, is because passion alone can't cut it. For passion to survive, it needs structure. A WHY without the HOW's, passion without structure, has a very high probability of failure.' pg 184 By purchasing 'Start With Why' through the provided link, here https://amzn.to/2K1xlX7 you will be supporting both myself and the author. Bring on season 2. Netflix The Rain...Was ok. I'm not looking forward to another season. This dragged for me. Upgrade (Movie). Wow. I dug this film. Robocop, Terminator vibes. Violent too. This came straight out of the 80s with a futuristic twist. Loved this. Sense 8...I've watched this from the beginning. I'm a fan of the Wachowski's stuff. I enjoyed there their Matrix films, Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending. I enjoyed this show, but it's not perfect. It lingers on certain situations for a while, and others it wraps up immediately after a long build. The romances and chemistry between the 8 main characters is the highlight of this series for me. Causing me to tear up several times throughout. The action was cool as well. As a whole, this fun. Black Lightning...For a CW show to include topics such as experimentation on poor, urban neighborhoods. Drugs, gang violence. A strong sense of family within the nuclear unit. Black Lightning was fantastic. This was miles ahead of Netflix's season 1 of Luke Cage. Jason Inman of the Geek History Lesson podcast hailed this show for being the best CW-superhero show of 2018. My 6 Month Sex Worker Experience I've been seeing sex workers for the last 6 months. I've had good and bad experiences. The people I've seen have all been in New Jersey. They've been transgender women and some cross-dressers. I've never considered myself bisexual, maybe I am now. Who knows. I'm reminded of the good experiences while going through bad ones. Normally they happen when the sex worker lives alone or is alone at their place. When they take their time, give a massage, get to know you a bit. I'm often nervous when first meeting a lady of the night. These elements help ease that tension. If the sex is great, this makes the whole encounter an A+. Bad experiences consist of someone saying they'll do something during the initial contact, then when you get there they no longer do it or want to upsell you to the 'girlfriend experience'. A bad experience happens when the escort looks nothing like their pictures in their online profile. When she says she has no remaining condoms or lube. A bad experience happens when she says she lives alone but someone pops out of the closet while you're having foreplay. Yes, all of this has happened to me during my sexcapades. But I don't regret any of it. I prefer when the sex workers have their own place. I work in a hotel, at the front desk. I've seen clients walking in asking for the working women. It's awkward, weird. The escorts never give their real names so the client is in the lobby loitering waiting to hear from the worker. I know, I've done this! In New Jersey, there seems to be less hotel security as opposed to NYC hotels. Less awkward in Jersey? Maybe. It has been a financial drain. Most sex workers charge $200 for an hour. This doesn't include the uber ride to/from the destination. If they're local that's even better. When I went for a two year period of being celibate I had more money in the bank. Like I said before, no regrets. When I abstain from watching porn and save my ejaculation for the sex worker(about a 6 day period), I don't have trouble getting it up. If it's the other way around I have a hard time getting going, or if the sex worker is a little more masculine or rigid with rules, I don't tend to get excited. For the most part, my experience has been positive. No life changing STD's, some bumps in the road here and there. I can be more consistent with fully protecting myself. I will do better.   Enjoyed this?   Find all of my content on the website at http://improveandhavefun.com    Social Media Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paul_pvp_perez/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pvpluvzlieff   Twitter: https://twitter.com/Paul_PVP_Perez   Rate, like, leave a review! So-called feminist Germaine Greer has angered survivors of rape after she made dismissive comments about the form of sexual assault while speaking at the Hay Literary Festival this week. Greer described the crime - which holds a maximum punishment of life imprisonment - as 'bad sex', and went on to say most cases of the assault are mere demonstrations of laziness. 'Most rape is just lazy, just careless, just insensitive,' she told her audience at the festival. 'Most rapes don’t involve any injury whatsoever,' Greer continued. 'We are told that it is a sexually violent crime, an expert like Quentin Tarantino will tell us that when you use the word rape you’re talking about violence, a throwing them down... it is one of the most violent crimes in the world. Bullshit Tarantino.' Diminishing rape and the trauma it can cause even further, the writer said: 'Instead of thinking of rape as a spectacularly violent crime – and some rapes are – think about it as non-consensual, that is, bad sex.'

#119 There are affiliate links in this post. In this episode I discuss weird(but true) stories.   I review 'The Girl with All the Gifts' movie(there are spoilers).   My takeaways from Joe Pulizzi's book 'Content Inc.'   I have a new DJ mixtape with songs from Calvin Harris, Action Bronson, N.E.R.D and more.   Finally I discuss 'burning the ships' and what does that mean. Weird Stories Being Alone can be Healthy http://bit.ly/2hQjHd6   Scary Angelina Jolie Fan http://bit.ly/2Am25hp  Illinois Law treats Pets as Children http://bit.ly/2C4Tj8u   Child's Doll calls Mom 'B*tch' http://bit.ly/2Ch9Poh  This is the first weird story segment of 2018. And I enjoy putting these weird stories together because, as I always say with these particular tales, real life is always stranger than any fiction that you can read. And the first weird story, curious story here, is being alone can be healthy. Now, this is dated the 22nd of November, 2017, and this is on Studyfinds.org. I will leave all the links to all these stories in the show notes for this episode, or in the description for this video below. Now the headline being, "Study: Being alone can be good for your mental health." It sparks creativity, read you a couple of the lines here. "When it comes to seeking solitude, many people often blame mental health issues as an underlying cause, but a new study finds that being alone has its benefits too, particularly when it comes to people looking for a surge of creativity. Researchers at the University of Buffalo interviewed 295 privacy-valuing individuals who reported a variety of reasons for their tendency to spend a lot of time alone, ranging from feeling fear or anxiety around others to preferring to use the spare time working on a craft. Although research has traditionally suggested that excessive time alone can be unhealthy, some seclusive pursuits, such as trying to connect to nature to get a better sense of self can be constructive, the researchers found." Now, there's a couple of quotes from the researchers here. "We have to understand why someone is withdrawing to understand the associated risks and benefits," says Julie Bowker, the study's lead author, in a university release. "When people think about the costs associated with social withdrawal, often they adopt a developmental perspective," she continues. "During childhood and adolescence, the idea is that if you're removing yourself too much from your peers, then you're missing out on positive interactions like receiving social support, developing social skills and other benefits of interacting with our peers. Bowker believes that the presumed downsides of being alone and withdrawing have lent such a preference a hard-to-erase stigma. More recent research, including this latest study, has begun to recognize the potential benefits of alone time, provided it's an intentional choice prompted by positive emotions." I spend a lot of time alone myself, regarding life, if it's not at work, it's home, or just going about doing my business. I do meet up with friends for events at times, but that's not always, it's not a constant. But I am grateful, I'll be honest, that I actually, this is one of the benefits of having a job, of going to a place where there are other people, working there, I've given a lot of thought, and I would still probably like to go ahead and explore working from home for a period, but not forever. I just feel like, and I know what'll probably happen, is that I will be spending a lot of time by myself, so that is a benefit of actually having a job that you get to go ahead and talk to people. Now, if you don't like the people that you work with, then it's maybe time to get another job, you know what I'm saying? Now the next story is scary Angelina Jolie fan. If you've seen the cover art for this video or this podcast, you'll see a picture of this young woman who has gone ahead and has transformed her face, has transformed herself, to look like Angelina Jolie. This is crazy stuff. Now, this is on the Sun.co.uk. This is an older story. This is also from November the 30th, 2017. An Iranian woman has gone viral after claiming she's had 50 surgeries in a bid to look like her idol Angelina Jolie. And if you're watching the video version of this, I am gonna be posting pictures so you can see what this young woman looks like. It's a little scary; I'll be honest. The 19-year-old from Toronto underwent 50 surgeries in the space of just a few months, according to the Belgian website SudInfo. This hasn't been officially confirmed, however, so it's possible her unique looks are the result of careful makeup or even prosthetics. Very interesting. She also reportedly went on a diet to maintain her 40-kilogram weight, which, provided she is over 4.8 feet, will classify her as dangerously underweight. Sahar has amassed more than 308,000 followers on Instagram, although many have left unflattering comments on her pictures. One person just posted "Zombie" on a recent shot, while another said "Her doc make me look like an eight-month-old corpse. Doc says no more." Now moving to the next weird story here, a new Illinois law treats pets more like children in custody cases. This is from the Chicago Tribune. This is dated at 12/25, Christmas time, of 2017. "Judges in divorce cases consider the well-being of pets in allocating sole or joint ownership under an Illinois law that takes effect January the first. 'It sort of starts treating your animal more like children instead of property,' said Illinois state senator Linda Holmes, an animal lover who sponsored the legislation. If you're going before a judge, they're allowed to take the best interest of the animal into consideration. The law, similar to the one in Alaska, applies only to pets that are marital assets, not service animals. Pets are another issue to hash out in a divorce, in addition to money, children, and possessions. For years, pets have been treated no different from other pieces of property to be divided between a divorcing couple. 'Most couples can agree on pets outside of court,' said Jeffrey Knipmeyer, a partner at Nottage and Ward, a family law practice in Chicago. In his 21 years of experience, Knipmeyer has tried the issue in court only a few times. According to a recent study of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, about 30% of attorneys have seen a decrease over the past three years in pet custody cases. 'But when a pet custody case does reach court, the state law could be helpful in giving judges guidance on how to decide,' said Madeline Marzano-Lesnevich, president of the Academy." I think there was a story one time of somebody marrying a horse, or something like that. This is craziness. They're pets, people, come on! Now, the last story here is a devil doll. "Mom fumes at Toys 'R' Us after buying daughter a Christmas doll which called her a b-i-t-c-h," a bitch. Let's check out this story here, and this is from Christmas time a couple of months ago. This is, once again, on the Sun.co.uk, dated exactly the 28th of December. Read you a couple of the lines here from the article. "A shocked mom was forced to take her daughter's favorite Christmas present away from her after it appeared to repeat explicit insults. Siobhan Fox, 30, filmed the My Little Baby Born Walks Doll, which she believes sounds like it is saying 'you bitch, you bitch' rather than the 'mama' and 'papa' she and husband Daniel had expected." And once again, I'm going to show you the video and show you pictures of the My Little Born Walks Doll. "The mom told the Sun Online: 'My daughter is two-and-a-half-years-old. She wanted it because her friend has one. It was on top of her list. My husband got it out for her and put the batteries in. I was not in the room. My daughter had it from my husband, and it just caught his ear. It meant to say 'mama, dada.' It's not. He called me in and said, 'Look, what do you think to this?' I got it straight away.' Siobhan and husband Daniel, 30, had to remove the doll from the tot because little Darcey repeats everything she hears. The disappointed mom added, 'That was what she really wanted, and I felt so awful taking it off her, but I could not let her go out in public with that doll saying that.' The doll, made by Zapf Creation, speaks when her rattle is shaken near her and had been bought from a Toys 'R' Us in Tamworth." Scrolling down here just to the bottom of the article, I want to see if this company said anything, the company who created the doll. And this is another quote from the article. "A spokesperson for Zapf Creations said, 'At Zapf Creation we take all feedback very seriously. Our Baby Born products are created to be a fun introduction to imaginative parent-child play. The My Little Baby Born Walks Doll includes baby babble sounds that are in no way meant to represent language or cause any offense to users.'" Very interesting. So folks, those are the four stories for this particular episode. Any thoughts, comments, please do so below, or I will leave a link on the show notes where you can go ahead and start a conversation on the blog. I want to hear what you have to say. This is the Improve and Have Fun Podcast, and these are weird stories.   Movie Review I've watched many zombie movies. George Romero's Dawn of The Dead began my infatuation with the genre. I've seen zombie shows, read zombie comics, have played zombie video games, have owned zombie toys. The Girl with all the Gifts presents a different spin I hadn't seen before. This movie seems like an evolution from the Walking Dead concept. There, everyone is already infected. When they die, they will return as the undead bitten or not. This film asks what if children were born in this setting? How would it affect them? Would the world be any different? As the film begins, the children are strapped down while guards have guns pointed at them. There's a scene when a guard dangles his arm in front of one of the bounded children. The child begins to ravenously snap at the guard. Another concept the movie presents is that of spores which seem to grow out of dead zombies. This spore, under the right reaction, blooms, distributes its pollen. Becoming airborne causing even more havoc. Interesting. The main protagonist is the main antagonist as well. She is child actress Sennia Nanua who I haven't seen before. She was very charming on one end and dangerous on the other. The movie ends with the logical evolution of these zombie kids. I found this movie on Collider media's website. They frequently have articles listing the best videos on Amazon Prime or Netflix. This was a worthwhile watch. See the movie here. http://amzn.to/2G3jw9m  Book Takeaways Content Inc. is a book I recommend to anyone who's starting a podcast, blog, youtube channel. Especially if you want to nail down your unique vision and sell something down the road. I wish I read this book before starting my podcast. It has given me ideas on how to monetize my material. I found Mr. Pulizzi's writing engaging and accessible. While reading this, I even sought out some of his online presentations. Good stuff. Here are five takeaways/quotes from Joe Pulizzi's 'Content Inc.' 1 - 'That's because the content is what people want online, and marketing and advertising are what people easily avoid. I knew how to create the former, and that's how I attracted and held the attention that led to revenue, profits, and success.' pg xii-foreword 2 - 'The key here is that you don't have to be the New York Times or the leading trade magazine in your industry to get people to engage with your content. Readers are open to receiving and engaging in any content that will help them live better lives, get better jobs, or solve a particular task. The point: You have as much opportunity to deliver amazingly helpful content as anyone.' pg 18 3 - 'More and more, I find that the best Content Inc. programs revolve around aspirations, not needs. I've been guilty of telling marketers to 'focus on customer pain points' since, well, forever. Focusing on pain points just gets you to the front door. To get to the heart of your customers' needs, you have to focus on what they want to be and help them get where they want to go.' pg 68 4 - 'Most businesses simply don't think about repurposing ahead of time. They think, 'I need a blog post or a white paper.' They don't think in terms of strategy Robert discusses above-of how one story idea can be told in dozens of different ways depending on the content needs of the organization' pg 132 5 - 'For all for of my books, including this one, a lot of material, ideas, and content originated from existing blog posts. If you have six months of blogs, you might already have half a book. Now writing a book is not an easy endeavor, but you may have a lot of the raw content already at your disposal to develop a book.' pg 205 With that said, here are a few ways I've thought of monetizing my content: a. Coaching/consulting others who are interested in publishing their content in my style. Or putting a course together explaining the same. b. Being a DJ for hire. Soliciting offers from anyone who enjoys my mixtapes and would like me to play for their event. c. Make an ebook and/or audiobook from combined blog posts. You can see here, the nuggets of knowledge this book has in producing and repurposing your content. In finding your particular niche, where you're knowledgeable and can expand for hours. By purchasing this book through my Amazon link here, it supports both the author and myself. Thanks! Get the book here http://amzn.to/2oRhmlY  DJ Mixtape 1. 'No Lie' Sean Paul, Dua Lipa 2. 'Bless Your Heart' DENM 3. 'Nuh Ready' Calvin Harris, PARTYNEXTDOOR 4. 'Bonzai' Action Bronson 5. 'Bloody Water' Ab Soul, James Blake Black, Anderson Paak 6. 'Dead Man' Joshua Luke Smith 7. 'Stuck With Me' The Neighbourhood 8. 'Lightning Fire Magic' N.E.R.D. 9. '#Natural' Paty Cantu, Juhn 10. 'Rope' Chi Ching Ching, Hanging 'Burning the Ships' In a recent episode of the MWF Motivation podcast, Rob Dial discussed 'burning the ships.' What does he mean by this? Do not have a plan B, only work on plan A. 'Success or death' is a phrase that comes to mind. He gives the example of Ed Sheeran who quit high school, moved to London, to chase his dream of music. How Mr. Sheeran suffered, scratched, clawed, I'm sure went hungry at times. He never took his eyes off the prize. This particular morning, as I listened to this lesson, it spoke to me. I thought; I can produce a better podcast if I just give it all my attention. Not on book writing, or creating a Redbubble store. Not teaching dancehall classes. That's what I love about this type of media. It's a ball of clay I can mold any which way. It doesn't have to be only audio. It can be video. A time lapsed drawing, a video of myself dancing, a talking head video. Anything. I write scripts, but I can hire other writers, narrators to read what is written. I can record party videos, event videos, interview people. I've done all of these things on here already. I'd come to this decision before, but I heard elsewhere that I should diversify my income. That's why I started taking up all these other mini-ventures. No more. My job and eBay will support me. My focus, time and energy will be the podcast. This feels good. Looking back at 2016, Jeremy Olander could make a case that it was his biggest year so far... He launched his new label Vivrant which saw 4 out of the first 5 releases make it to number one on Beatport, and he also took the brand on a label tour across 5 continents which included a sold out hometown gig to 1200 people alongside Henry Saiz, Finnebassen and Charlie Don’t Surf. His Talespin EP on Suara made it to number one on Beatport's Top 100 Releases chart, and the B-side, ‘Panorama’, sat at number one on the Progressive chart for impressive 35 days straight. On the remix front, Olander notably reworked ‘LETTERS’, the Sailor & I and Eekkoo collaboration released on Big Beat/Atlantic - a remix which is quickly approaching 1 million streams on Spotify. 2017 is well set to be even better: The ‘Damon’ EP is out now on his own imprint (the first release from Olander this year); upcoming is an collaboration EP with past Balance Selections compiler Cristoph, and a non-stop tour schedule is ensuring the Vivrant label owner is taking his sound globally. For this podcast the Swede has delivered a mix which feature an exciting amount of new Jeremy Olander productions: 'I’ve included a lot of unheard stuff to make it stand out and show people what I’ve been working on lately.’ Olander told us, 'Most of these I haven't played at any shows so I'm excited to try and gauge what people might like by the reactions’. And we can only think the reactions will be positive. Jeremy Olander has gone above and beyond to deliver something special. Meet this week's awesome studentpreneur: Matthew Childs, 22 y.o., undergraduate Business  and Civil Engineer student at the University of Technology Sydney and entrepreneur at Wine Stash in Australia. Wrap up: Matthew started on eBay in High School with books, making 700% profit margin sometimes and learning how to handle customer complaints. He leveraged all these good feedbacks and reviews when launching Wine Stash. He saw an opportunity while working in his family's bottle shop. Customers were asking for wine racks and they couldn't find any at a good price. After careful research, he took a risk and ordered a full container of wine racks! He moved on to becoming a part-time student and then put Uni on hold for a semester to try to automate his business. Matthew joined his university co-sharing space, the Hatchery. That got him introduced to Fishburners, the largest co-sharing space in Australia. A lot of people have told him that he should get a mentor, but he hasn't found one yet. If you know his ideal mentor, contact Matthew.   Quotes: - 'On eBay sell the hardcover books or books that look relatively new, sell with free shipping at fixed price.' - 'I went through a lot of suppliers on Ali Baba until I found the right one.' - 'On eBay people don't look for accounts but for great product pictures.' - 'Now I can easily justify the big expense of having professional.' - 'When I bought my first container with my own money a lot of people called me crazy!' - 'I learned to accept fate and move on when things didn't work out, I try to be lean.' - 'It's finding and targetting that little niche that no one thought of that makes you money.' - 'Most of the people at Fishburners (co-sharing space) are surprised that I am still studying!' - 'You have got to accept failure and go on.' - 'There are a lot of risks but the risks equal the rewards.'   Tips: - Use Fiverr.com to get good photoshops at the beginning of your business - Do your market research on what sells and doesn't sell on eBay by using the "sold" option in the filter.   U2U (Managing Uni and the Business): - I went part time and later on deferred one semester to focus on the business. - I learned a lot in my Business and Civil Engineering for my business, especially the process of learning information. Blogs and websites: - Entrepreneur.com - Startupsmart.com.au   U2U (Uni to support you): - 'The Hatchery (co-sharing space at UTS) is  a good start but a lot more can be done.' - We need to connect students from different faculties a lot better: students with ideas, students with coding skills,... - First identify students with ideas and then  help them to develop their ideas.   Links: - Wine Stash: WineStash.com.au - The Hatchery at UTS - Fishburners  - LinkedIn: Matthew   If you have what it takes you can apply to share your story on air. CLICK HERE

Jon Toogood is a songwriter and musician. Jon is the lead singer and guitarist in a band named Shihad. Formed in Wellington, New Zealand, the band are well-known among Australians following the success of their breakthrough album, The General Electric, in 1999. Jon and his bandmates have been based in Melbourne since around that time, and have released a string of great albums. The most recent was FVEY, released in 2014, a hard rock record with a political agenda, which we discuss in some detail in this episode. I first met Jon Toogood in 2011, when I interviewed him for a Mess+Noise ‘Storytellers’ feature about two of my favourite Shihad songs, ‘Home Again’ and ‘Deb’s Night Out’. I also interviewed him about drug use for my book Talking Smack in 2013, when Shihad were touring Australia while supporting Black Sabbath. He’s an energetic conversationalist and mad music fan above all else, which should become apparent pretty quickly. Our conversation touches on the concept of justice, which featured prominently in Jon’s writing for FVEY; how his marriage to a Sudanese woman changed his perspective and led to him undertaking charity work; his early interest in reading horror novels, which led to writing his first song for Shihad; the fine line between confidence and arrogance in musicians, and how he has learned to deal with negative reviews of his music. This interview took place in Brisbane in early June, when Shihad was performing three shows in south-east Queensland. I’d seen the band perform a couple of nights earlier, at the Hamilton Hotel, where they were in incredible form. They’re simply one of the best live rock bands I’ve ever seen, and I decided long ago to never pass up an opportunity to see them live. Jon and I spoke on a Sunday afternoon in an inner-city hotel room that he was sharing with guitarist Phil Knight; you’ll hear Phil arrive partway through the recording and try to quietly creep past with a box of freshly bought Fruit Loops. Jon Toogood is a songwriter and musician who has been at the helm of Shihad since 1988. A New Zealand rock institution that has consistently delivered churning riffs and soaring melodies over nine studio albums and eight EPs, Shihad have a reputation as a ferocious live act that's been hard-earned after more than 1,500 shows. Their two decade-plus career was recognised at the 2010 New Zealand Music Awards, where they were ushered into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame; they were also recently awarded with 'Most Singles in the NZ Charts by a NZ Artist' (25) and 'Most #1 Albums by a NZ Artist' (5) by Recorded Music NZ. Jon also fronts The Adults, an extra-curricular project starring some of his favourite New Zealand artists, including Julia Deans (Fur Patrol), Shayne Carter (Dimmer, Straitjacket Fits) and Ladi 6. Jon took up guitar aged seven, but back then soccer and cricket were his still first love. A talented batsman, he captained the Wellington Representative cricket team, but at 15 he traded his bat and cricket whites for a guitar and black jeans and never looked back. Jon’s career highlights include playing in front of 60,000-strong crowds and Shihad's gold albums, but says nothing beats the rush of knowing when he’s written a song that works. As we were all brought up in the World System, there are certain aspects of the world that have been taught to us that are not of God. Certain phrases we use, concepts and ideas, opinions and actions that are of the fallen world. Jesus said in John 5:19, "Then Jesus answered and said to them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.' " Let us take a look at a part of scripture that is too often taken out of context and used to justify not walking in love or not laying down our lives as Jesus modeled for us. Let's look today at the account of "Jesus cleansed the temple."

Puppy Awareness Week: 1 - 7th September 2015

Pup Aid Celebrating. Informing. Changing lives. The Kennel Club’s National Puppy Awareness Week (PAW) is a celebration of the joy that puppies bring to our lives and aims to give potential puppy owners the information they need to ensure that the relationship they have with their new family member is a happy and fulfilling one. Puppy farming is the mass commercial production of puppies purely for profit and without any thought for the health, welfare, or happiness of either the pup or breeding dogs. Kept in horrific conditions, then sent long distances cross country and sold en masse - usually poorly and riddled with painful disease - to pet shops, websites, and private dealers; these puppies often die within days of arriving in their new home. According to a recent Dogs Trust survey, 95% of dog owners say they wouldn't buy a dog from a puppy farm yet as many as 900,000 people may have done so without even knowing. TV Vet Marc Abraham says: 'Most dog owners say they'd never buy a dog from a puppy farm, yet a large number will due to common scams especially by private dealers. This is exactly why Pup Aid have launched this e-petition. We need 100,000 signatures from the nation's animal lovers to make the Government listen and hopefully end this needless and preventable suffering for good.' 'The Government must ban the sale of young puppies and kittens unless their mothers are present; as an absent mother is a clear compromise of both health and welfare for these animals and often a big clue indicating puppy farming.' Pup Aid believes prospective puppy and kitten owners should always: Ask "Where's Mum?" Insist on seeing the puppy/kitten and mother interacting Be aware of scams e.g. fake or no mother present at all Pup Aid aims to educate and raise awareness about the cruel trade of puppy and kitten farming helping the British public to only buy from reputable and honourable breeders e.g. Kennel Club Assured Breeders, or consider adopting a dog from a local rescue centre. Pup Aid hope their campaign and e-petition will curb the demand and supply for farmed puppies and kittens and help tackle the horrific practice of puppy and kitten farming in the UK.
