Is the Bible Still Relevant? Conversation with Dennis Prager

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 7, 2022 30:30

Is the Bible, the most influential book in world history, still relevant? Why do people dismiss it as being irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? The Rational Bible: Deuteronomy by Dennis Prager, national radio host and bestselling author of The Rational Bible series, explains the Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible, and demonstrates how it remains profoundly relevant—both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will cause you to reexamine your doubts. The title of this commentary is The Rational Bible because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager's words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” In this episode my co-host Len from our morning show joins me, as we talk to Dennis about the following...  What is unique about the book of Deuteronomy as compared to Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers? Why would someone who thinks the Bible is a series of religious fairy tales consider buying this commentary? In the book there's an essay called, “Fear of God is Morally and Psychologically Necessary.” Dennis makes the case for this.  Canaan was the land God promised to give the Israelites (“The Promised Land”) but the Canaanites were already living there. Did God command the Israelites to commit genocide when he commanded them to annihilate the Canaanites and take over the land? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I have one of my favorite guests on... The most incredible teacher, Rabbi Jason Sobel. Unlock the Mysteries of the Messiah that are hidden in plain sight with him and his new book Mysteries of the Messiah. Most people do not understand how the Bible fits together—even people of faith. Too many Christians accept half an inheritance in that they are content to embrace merely the New Testament. On the flip side, Jews often experience this by embracing only the Old Testament. But God has an intricate plan and purpose for both. Mysteries of the Messiah: Unveiling Divine Connections from Genesis to Today by Rabbi Jason Sobel, raised in a Jewish home in New Jersey but now a follower of Jesus—Yeshua—helps readers unlock the fascinating mysteries in Bible. Mysteries not only about the Messiah but also how the Bible reveals Him and unveils His intense love and relentless pursuit of redemption for all. Rabbi Jason received his rabbinic ordination from the UMJC (Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations) in 2005. He has a B.A. in Jewish Studies (Moody) and an M.A. in Intercultural Studies (Southeastern Seminary). He is a sought-after speaker and has made multiple appearances on national television, including the Trinity Broadcasting Network, the Daystar Network, and the Dr. Oz Show. Rabbi Jason is the author of Breakthrough: Living a Life That Overflows, Finding Jesus in the Jewish Holidays, and he is also the coauthor of New York Times bestseller The Rock, the Road, and theRabbi with Kathie Lee Gifford. He is a thought provoking leader, Jewish follower of Jesus, and is co-founder of Fusion Global, an organization dedicated to deeper insights into the Jewish roots and scriptures. He is also co-author of The Rock, The Road, and The Rabbi with Kathie Lee Gifford!  If there is a detail in the scripture, it's there for a reason. We've read the stories in the Bible many times... but there's more to these stories than we've seen.  You have to understand what the Bible says... NOT just what you've been told it says. Go beyond a "Sunday School" approach to the Bible by digging in the original languages and deeper meanings on the Holy Scriptures.  Enjoy learning!

I'm thankful to sit down and have some encouraging girl talk with Natalie Grant! Natalie is an eight-time GRAMMY® nominee and has remained one of Christian music’s top-selling artists since her 2005 breakout RIAA Gold-certified album, Awaken.  Known for powerful vocals, heart-gripping lyrics and passionate performances, Grant has since gone on to amass more than 500 million streams and has garnered several #1 singles at radio. We talk a little about faith during the hard times, life as a mom and giving advice to our kids, her new music, and gratitude. She's always such joy. I hope you get as much encouragement as I did.  Natalie sang her new song "My Weapon" live on her Facebook page. She wrote this about the single and what life is like right now for her…. “So today, it all started to hit for me. Heavy sadness for all those who’ve lost loved ones. Fear for my family members who are working in medical facilities where they’ve run out of masks and supplies. Uncertain as I’m suddenly unemployed. Though it’s a big hit, I’m so thankful that we will be ok. But I can’t say the same for so many crew members, musicians, truck/bus drivers, production companies, not to mention young artist who needed these tours to survive. I’m anxious about my kids and school, 2 students from the girls school just tested positive for COVID-19 today. With Gracie’s asthma and weak lungs, I want this nasty virus to stay far away. Today it was all overwhelming. And so I worshipped. Because His presence is our greatest weapon. And my worship opens up the heavens and is the pathway to his presence. The struggle is real, as are the facts. But our God is real and he is ALIVE - and worship reminds us that we are fighting from victory, not for victory. I hope this helps you remember that.” Check out my blog conversationswithsara.com for my post on Gratitude and research to that shows just how important is is for our well-being.

This week Functional Medicine Dietitian Gina Jones joins me to chat about the following.... Eating clean on a budget!  Healing thyroid problems with nutrition and supplements Healing mold... Detox options. How to get better.  Shares her carrot fries recipe! (It's my favorite)  Gina's story:  Becoming a registered dietitian was a huge career change for me.  I graduated with a marketing degree and started my career at one of the largest greeting card companies in the world.  I was young and generally healthy so I didn't pay very close attention to what I ate and I rarely cooked. However,  all of that changed during the pregnancy of my first daughter when I started experiencing some mild complications.  About four months after her birth I was diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases. Along with that diagnosis came new food allergies, intolerances, and a huge lifestyle change. When conventional methods didn't work, I started to heal with food.  I quickly discovered that nearly everything on the market had additives, chemicals, pesticides, dyes, artificial flavorings, and a host of ingredients that I can’t even pronounce (butylated hydrozyttoluene, anyone?). I overhauled my diet and lifestyle which contributed to putting these autoimmune diseases into remission. I then started on a new path to help other people that may be going through a similar experience.  I wanted to learn the science behind how food heals and how to use food instead of medicine (when possible) to regain health.  In doing so I completed my Master's Degree in Clinical Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University as well as a one of the most prestigious dietetic internships at Cleveland Clinic.  I have found my passion in practicing Functional Medicine Nutrition and I would love to help you reach your optimal health goals -GINA

Most of us long to be in control—of our schedule, our relationships, and our future. In this episode, Sara sits down with Grammy Award–winning singer/songwriter Laura Story, known for such hits as “Blessings,” “Indescribable,” and “Mighty to Save”. Sara chat with her about life, overcoming hardships, health trials, and her new book, "I Give Up". Newlywed Laura Story thought she had control over the great life ahead of her. After all, she followed Jesus and had a promising new job as a worship leader. Why would God not want to fulfill her dreams? But when Laura and her husband, Martin, faced a brain tumor, infertility, and a son’s birth defect, she realized she’d been looking for a happiness that comes from circumstances, rather than a deeper joy that comes from God. Again and again, Laura had to surrender her vision for her life so she could embrace God’s vision. And again and again she learned that even in the midst of shattered dreams, God’s plan brought greater joy than she could have imagined. Now the Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter known for such hits as “Blessings,” “Indescribable,” and “Mighty to Save” shares her powerful story of finding blessing in her deepest pain. In, I Give Up, Laura explores: How to delight in God’s gifts no matter your circumstances. Why waiting on God is a daily decision, not a step-by-step process. The strength we find from meditating on God’s Word. Why surrendering to God leads to reconciliation with others. How the things we consider to be losses are ways for God to display his glory. As Laura writes, she no longer wants to be in control of her life. She wants to be rooted in the God who is in control. I Give Up will help you Discover a deeper life of worship, a fuller life of joy, and a freer life of true surrender as you open your hands to God.
