Sarah McDowell (The SEO Mindset Podcast) and Natasha Willings (Limitless Learning education services) join Flixwatcher to review Sarah's choice How to Blow Up a Pipeline. How to Blow Up a Pipeline (2022) is action-thriller inspired by the book of the same name by Andreas Malm that explores ideas on climate activism and sabotage to create change. The film is directed by Daniel (Cam - do check out our Fixwatcher episode on this!) Goldhaber and stars relatively unknown actors Ariela Barer, Kristine Froseth, Lukas Gage, Forrest Goodluck, Sasha Lane, Jayme Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Jake Weary, and Irene Bedard.   The film version follows a fictional group of eight people who are brought together to blow up an oil pipeline at two key locations. Their motivations range from being directly affected by the actions of the oil company or to be climate activists. They all feel that non-disruptive action is not sufficient and are prepared to risk prison to carry out the plan.   Recommendability scores for How to Blow Up a Pipeline were pretty strong, everyone agreed it was an important subject and opened up interesting conversations on climate activism. Scores were lower for repeat viewing but due to its punchy runtime and fast moving narrative it scores a very respectable 3.51 overall. Dirty Diapers Reveal How Germy Babies' Microbiomes Are In a new study, researchers picked through the dirty diapers of more than 600 infants. Those stinky diapers were a gold mine of info—they contained more than 10,000 virus species. And though it may sound terrifying, those viruses play a key role in babies' microbiomes. Guest host and SciFri producer Kathleen Davis talks with Katherine J. Wu, staff writer at The Atlantic about this story and other science news of the week. They chat about climate change's influence on the twilight zone, what critters can be found on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a surprising twist in the story of Mars' moon Deimos, the impressive sleeping habits of elephant seals, and why insects seem to flock to the light when it's dark out.   From Backyards To Barn Yards, The Surprising Science Of Chickens Raising backyard chickens continues to grow in popularity. The number of households in the United States with a backyard flock jumped from 8% in 2018 to 13% in 2020, according to a survey by the American Pet Products Association. But our fondness for chickens is hardly new. The relationship between humans and chickens goes back thousands of years, to when humans began domesticating the red junglefowl native to Southeast Asia. Guest host Sophie Bushwick has a compre(hen)sive conversation with Tove Danovich, freelance journalist and author of the new book Under the Henfluence: Inside the World of Backyard Chickens and the People Who Love Them, about how she was charmed by her own backyard chickens, the history of their domestication, and the surprising science of chicken intelligence.   Why Climate Activists Are Turning To Drastic Measures For Earth Day this year, people all over the world took to the streets to demand climate action. But as large and loud as these protests can be, they are often met with inaction. So activists are ramping up their efforts. Just within the last year, we've seen people chain themselves to banks, throw mashed potatoes at a Monet painting, shut down highways, and even glue themselves to museum walls, all in the name of climate justice. Those actions went viral and really seemed to strike a nerve. How did we end up here? Guest host Kathleen Davis talks with Dr. Dana Fisher, professor of sociology at the University of Maryland College Park, about the state of climate activism and the tactics at play.   Recasting The Climate Movement In ‘How To Blow Up A Pipeline' Climate activism is getting the big screen treatment this spring, with the new film “How to Blow Up a Pipeline.” This action-packed heist film follows a group of young climate activists, disillusioned by the slow pace of climate action, who decide to take drastic action in the name of the climate. What follows is a tense ‘will they-won't they' story set in Texas oil country. The name of this movie comes from a 2021 nonfiction book by Andreas Malm. That book is a manifesto that argues that property damage and sabotage is the only way forward for climate activism. The movie features characters who struggle with this question, and whether there's a different way to accomplish their climate goals. Guest host Kathleen Davis speaks with Ariela Barer, who co-wrote, produced, and acted in the film. They chat about bringing this complicated topic to the big screen, and creating characters reflective of the real-life climate movement.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Our friends Daniel Goldhaber, Ariela Barer, Daniel Garber, and Jordan Sjol visit Screen Slate HQ to talk about their new film How to Blow Up a Pipeline, which adapts Andreas Malm's nonfiction book of the same name into a heist-style eco-thriller. We get into the research and adaptation process, stealing locations, balancing Barer's screenwriting and actor roles, and the art of editing as edging. Roughly since 2007, the assertion that Die Hard -- a movie that takes place at Christmas -- is a Christmas movie has been met with either strong support or opposition. On this episode, along with Ted Haycraft and writer/director Tyler Savage, we discuss the history of the heated debate, while also debating ourselves:- has this debate ever happened IRL, off of Twitter?;- if so, were the debaters online journalists or bots?;- have any of these IRL debates lasted any longer than three minutes?- and did the debate's resolution involve anything other than the participants realizing it all comes down to one's own definition of a “Christmas movie”?Also:- the careers of Steven E. de Souza and John McTiernan;- their assertions in the debate, along with Bruce Willis's and his mom's;- Die Hard's origin as a sequel to a novel that was adapted into The Detective, starring Frank Sinatra;- and the film as a progression in action filmmmaking.Tyler Savage's latest film, Stalker, is currently streaming on Hulu, while his first feature, Inheritance, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. His latest short, “Oddities,” starring Adrienne Barbeau, Logan Miller, and Ariela Barer, is currently making its festival run for 2023.

Tune in as Matt Cole (Debate This!, Avenge This!) takes a seat at the table to chat about Marvel's Runaways, the MCU-adjacent three-season TV show that follows a group of six high schoolers as they learn about a murderous scheme that their seemingly upstanding parents have been committing together for years and proceed to do all they can to thwart it. Having premiered in 2017 on Hulu before ending in 2019, it was promoted as a Marvel Studios property despite never giving nods to Iron Man, Hulk, Infinity Stones, or anything of the sort once (though the Darkhold, which you may recall from WandaVision, does pop up). On top of breaking down this under-the-radar series, the hosts arch their eyebrows at the questionable category of comedy that punches down on activism, comment on the upcoming animated series Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and repeatedly lament how much the show should have lasted one or more seasons. Created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (Gossip Girl), Runaways stars Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, Allegra Acosta, Annie Wersching, Ryan Sands, Angel Parker, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Kevin Weisman, Brigid Brannagh, James Yaegashi, Brittany Ishibashi, Elizabeth Hurley, Clarissa Thibeaux, Kip Pardue, and Julian McMahon. Hispanic Heritage Month may be over but that's not stopping these young Latinx television stars from sharing their thoughts about diversity and Latinx representation in entertainment! Multicultural TV Talk host Juan Ayala is joined by: Ariela Barer, Marvel's Runaways, Hulu; Rebel, ABC Frankie Rodriguez, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Disney+ Scarlett Estevez, Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion, Disney Channel; Christmas Again, DCOM Fernando Carsa, Acapulco, Apple TV+ The group chats about the first times they felt represented, the Latinx stars they'd like to work with in the future and the importance of positive and meaningful Latinx representation in television and media.

Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr

To kick off book four, we're checking in on a Brenna fave with a doozy of a hook: Runaways, which features a group of kids who discover their parents are supervillains and set out to stop them. Joe isn't quite as enamoured, in part because the art doesn't sit right with him (leading to a discussion of comic sizing and who the intended audience for this imprint was). Still, there's something laudable about a book that presents a tragic backstory for its characters and then lets them move past it.Less successful is Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's TV series, which takes ages to get going and mistakenly spends too much time on the parents. While it has a sunny teen vibe and great music, and Rhenzy Feliz and Lyrica Okano are well cast, the show is simply too labourious to get into!Wanna connect with the show? Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 2, Episode 5, Models, which originally aired on October 23, 2012 and was written by Josh Malmuth and directed by Eric Appel. Here's a quick recap of the episode:It's Cece's birthday and Jess comes to celebrate but clashes with her model friends. They get in a fight that leaves their boobs sore and also leads to Cece getting drunk and almost missing her modeling gig. Being the amazing friend she is, Jess fills in… This is also the episode where Schmidt buys Nick a cookie. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Clueless - Jess and Cece have a tradition to watch Clueless for Cece's birthday every year. Jay Cutler - Nick tells Schmidt the only time a man is allowed to think about another man is when that man is Jay Cutler. Additional Pop Culture References such as:YOLO - Nadia yells “YOLO” when Jess agrees to go out with Cece and her friends for her birthday. YOLO stands for You Only Live Once and along the same lines as the Latin phrase “carpe diem,” it is a call to live life to its fullest extent, even embracing behavior which carries some risk.Serena Williams - Nick calls Schmidt Serena Williams because he thought Schmidt was grunting at him. Serena Williams is an American professional tennis player. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the second-most of all time. Tennis players often grunt when hitting the ball.Wilmer Valderrama - After going out for Cece's birthday, Nadia thought she hooked up with Wilmer Valderrama. Wilmer Eduardo Valderrama is an American actor, producer, singer, and television personality. He is known for his role as Fez in That '70s Show and as Carlos Madrigal in From Dusk till Dawn: The Series.“You Make My Dreams” - When Jess tries to model at the Ford car event, the song “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates plays. "You Make My Dreams", sometimes incorrectly referred to as "You Make My Dreams Come True" is from the band's ninth studio album, Voices. The song reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981.Brian Austin Green - In the flashback scene, Schmidt mentions that Brian Austin Green is his favorite rapper. Brian Austin Green is an American actor, rapper, and producer, best known for his portrayal of David Silver on the original television series Beverly Hills, 90210. He is not typically known for his rapping and this was more of a joke for New Girl to make."shake what yo mamma gave ya" - When Nadia was trying to convince Cece to go out instead of doing her usual birthday tradition, she said “I shake this thing that my mama gave me”. This phrase means to shake your butt and came from the song “Shake Whatcha Mamma Gave Ye” by Poison Clan released in 1992.We also cover when Schmidt gave Nick a cookie at the beginning of the episode as the “Schmidtism” this episode. We talk about how the show portrays the models and Jess speaking about all models being “dumb” as our “not in the 2020s” and how Nick was making fun of Schmidt in the flashbacks. Our “yes in the 2020s” was about all the love in this episode with how Winston and Schmidt loved Nick and how Nick reciprocated by the end of the episode with his cookie shaped like a Jewish star. We also give a brief look into Lauren Dair Owens (young Jess) and Ariela Barer (young Cece), the Guest Stars we feature in this episode. Lauren's youtube page can be found here. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Stone Eisenmann (Young Nick), Jordan Fuller (Young Winston), Jason Antoon (the Clipboard Guy), James M. Connor (Gary), Rob Reinis (the account executive), Agnes Albright (Olga), Britni Stanwood (a foreign model), Greice Santo (Maria), Jesus Solorio (the fake Wilmer Valderrama), and Johanna Parker (the model scout). In the podcast, we also discussed Zooey's recent instagram post about having a forehead and the song “You Make My Dreams'' by Hall and Oates and its significance to 500 Days of Summer. Additionally, we noticed Schmidt continuing to look at his actuarial chart from Episode 4 and anniversary themes by years. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:VHS - When Jess shows up at Cece's house to celebrate her birthday, she talks about watching Clueless on VHS. VHS stands for Video Home System and was a standard for analog video recording on tape cassettes. Production of the magnetic tape video recording began in the 1950s and it was the primary home video format through the 1980s. In 1996, the DVD format was introduced and VHS production began to decline and by July of 2016, all VHS equipment manufacturing had stopped.Turtles - Throughout this episode Nick is looking at getting a turtle and he mentions the following types of turtles:Galapagos Tortoise - This is the largest living species group of 15 very large tortoises. Their lifespans in the wild can be over 100 years old and there has been one tortoise who, in captivity, lived to be at least 175 years old.Eastern Box Turtle - This is a subspecies of the hinge-shelled turtles and is a land turtle native to the eastern parts of the US. In captivity, their life span can be as short as 3 days.Spur Thighed Tortoise - This species of tortoise, also known as the Greek tortoise, is one of 5 species of Mediterranean tortoises. Their lifespan is older than 125 years and while not confirmed, there are reports of some living to be 200 years old.Nearsighted Loner Turtle - While there isn't a turtle specifically called a “nearsighted loner,” the mata mata freshwater turtle species is a natural loner and has good nearsighted vision. It's primarily found in South America and in captivity, there have been reports of turtles living 30-35 years but there is not a lot of information about the mata mata's lifespan in the wild.Jewish Star - When Nick brings Schmidt a cookie, he says that he couldn't find one in the shape of a Jewish star and so he broke it into the pieces. This is a reference to the Star of David which is a modern symbol of Jewish identity and Judaism and is a star made up of two equilateral triangles.Joie de vivre - Schmidt said that Jess has too much “joie de vivre” when Jess is getting ready to go out with Cece and her model friends. This is a French phrase that means to enjoy life. Casual uses of the phrase can be dated back to the late 17th century although it was brought to prominence in the 19th century.Mama-bird - When Nick says he would be happy if he could throw up the cookie that Schmidt gave him and then feed it to Schmidt, Schmidt asks if Nick was trying to mama-bird him the cookie. This is a reference to how mother birds first digest their food and then feed it to their babies. This episode got a 7.5/10 rating from Kritika and an 8/10 from Kelly and both had the same favorite character: Nick! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 6!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

“Pride and Prejudice” (January 6, 2017) The new One Day at a Time gets major points for focusing on a Latin family, for successfully re-inventing a Norman Lear classic and for giving us another reason to love Rita Moreno. Most important for this podcast’s purposes, however, is its nuanced handling of teenage Elena’s coming out. This week, Tony Rodriguez joins us to discuss how this story arc is more interesting for having put the spotlight not on Elena but on Penelope, her mom, who is liberal but is still having trouble accepting her daughter’s sexuality. Just wanted to say thanks for the podcast and starting a Discord! Hopping on there has become a highlight of my day, so thanks for that. Anyway, with the rumors of Young Avengers in early development, do you see that lineup looking more like The Champions? Sam Alexander Nova, Kamala Kahn and Amadeus Cho were stand outs for me and I think that would make for a great entry in the MCU. Your thoughts, Sean?23:56 Alex WardAssuming Cap dies or retires in Endgame (which, at this point, is still no more than mere speculation), do you think we'll ever see a "Who will wield the shield?"-type storyline? I can't help but think that'll be the concept of the Falcon/Bucky series, since they've both been Captain America at some point. Maybe Steve Rogers is Top Cop like he was in the 2010 Heroic Age, teaming up with Nick Fury to give Falcon and Bucky missions to test their mettle. Or something like that. Either way, I have a feeling they're still going to be mining from the Ed Brubaker stuff. Also, were you a fan of the Bucky-Cap suit? And do you think we'll ever see it in the MCU?26:13 Alex WardIs there any chance Mysterio's illusion-creating powers are actually mystical, or do you think the whole thing is a sham? I think it'd be cool to have a magic-based villain for Spidey; in the comics there's a huge variety in the types of villains he fights, and in my opinion tech-based stuff--especially stolen Stark tech--is on the verge of getting stale in the MCU.28:49 Tom DeMicheleSean, “The Good Place” is a frequent topic here and on the Discord, with you even suggesting an ideal scenario in which series creator Mike Schur directs Marvel Studios' “Fantastic Four.” Just for fun, if you had to cast the actors from “The Good Place” as Marvel characters new to the MCU, who would you cast?31:13 Alex WardJust one more, if Marvel Studios' FF is a huge hit, what are some possible spin offs they could try? A Thing movie, or maybe just Illuminati with Reed as sort of the protagonist? I know solo FF series in the past haven't lasted long, but the MCU seems to have a lot of success with characters whose solo series don't tend to last very long, like Ant-Man or Doctor Strange.33:11 Woo S! KimAfter watching “Avengers: Infinity War” again recently, I have a couple questions for you, Sean.  Markus and Mcfeely and The Russo Brothers say on the Blu-ray commentary after Thanos activates The Decimation he is transported to Soul World, why would The Infinity Stones take his mind there, whether or not that is actually the spirit of his daughter why would he be transported there, do you believe?  Also, in my thinking after The Decimation Thanos cannot repair the Gauntlet with the Time Stone, or any of the other stones, my feeling is if Thanos was able to heal the wound on his chest, he would have repaired the Gauntlet, I understand as do you, why he would not heal the wound on his arm, that is his badge of honour, but to me, if he could have repaired the Infinity Gauntlet, he would have I would like to point out in “Avengers: End Game” if I am proven wrong it's not a big deal, what is your point of view Sean?  38:12 Woo S! KimSomething I found interesting Ariela Barer who portrays Gert Yorkes on Marvel TV's “Runaways” said an interview and I'm paraphrasing but generally she was shocked to be considered for anything Marvel live action related because she thought you'd have to win a Golden Globe or an Emmy before getting a Marvel project.  I have heard from people older than me that in the 1970's the franchise to be considered and a lot of performers wanted to be in was a James Bond film, thanks to Robert Downey Jr and Samuel L. Jackson has Marvel Studios and as a result some of Marvel Television become that new franchise brass ring of “you know you are doing something right, when Marvel is interested in you.”  What are your thoughts, Sean?40:19 Brian WhiteHi Sean. You recently discussed your hopes for a Vision and Scarlet Witch Disney Plus show to be influenced by Tom King's recent limited series. First of all I want to explain I really enjoyed it too and love that Viv Vision is a member of the Champions. However, I have an enduring dislike of how Vision has been portrayed for years. Vision is a synthezoid, a synthetic human. He's not supposed to be a robot or an AI. His body and mind are synthetic but they are supposed to mimic being human. Waaaay back when John Byrne took over the first West Coast Avengers series, Vision was disassembled, I forget why. But he had been more and more demonstrating his growth as a person. He was rebuilt but since the traumatic event he's never been the same. I submit that he's brain damaged still. His decision to delete his emotions because he did not have the memory capacity and was misperceiving the world makes no sense. His brain is not digital storage, it's a synthetic human brain. As writers change, consistency is lost. I wish a writer had picked up on this rather than continue to treat Vision and Viv like robots. I'd like your thoughts and once I figure our the Discord maybe we can discuss it there. Thanks!44:49 Robert ReinekeHi Sean. I'm sure that you'll have plenty to say about Black Panther garnering a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. Let me add for those pooh poohing it as just another superhero film, how many Afro-futurism blockbusters can you name? Keeping to the Academy Awards, any particular pleasant surprises not involving Black Panther and Into the Spider-Verse? Any other disappointments? Anything that makes you curious?50:14 Woo S! KimSean, please indulge me, but you have "The Avengers" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" in 4k, correct?  I am thinking of getting both in 4k even though I already have both films in 1080p Blu-ray you said to me a couple of months back that the physical discs of both films, in 4k do not have Dolby Vision or Dolby ATMOS and the physical versions don't have any new special features.  Is all that I have stated correct and if this is accurate should I just purchase the digital copies on VUDU, at this point the best versions of 4k films are on digital and or on VUDU.  I just have the physical copies in case my internet goes down, thanks Sean.52:18 AlexBesides Black Panther and Infinity War what  MCU movies do you think  deserved the best picture nomination? For me it's Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 — which I know is an unconventional & unpopular choice since most people would probably point to Winter Solider but Guardians was such a discovery and my favorite Marvel film until Vol. 2 came along and surpassed it in my book. Vol.2 is an underappreciated gem of the MCU and deeper than most people give it credit for. I absolutely adored it and thought it was one of the best movies of 2017. I bawled like a baby at many moments especially at Yondu's death.  It's a masterpiece in my opinion. I can acknowledge that Winter Solider objectively is a way better movie but it didn't have the heart of the Vol. 2 and that's totally fine since their very different movies by design but for myself I connected more with Guardians Vol. 2.59:18 AlexIs Dark Phoenix and New Mutants  dead on arrival? It really feels like nobody is excited about it. I was talking with a couple of of buddies of mine about which was their most anticipated superhero movies and they named almost every comic book film released this year besides the two aforementioned ones. When I asked why they didn't included Dark Phoenix they said the trailers didn't grab them. Granted this is anecdotal but this coupled with various negative reports I've seen about the movies poor test screenings leads me to believe that no matter what Fox does, even if they put out one really awesome  trailer  it will do little to change the fact that most people are now waiting for the MCU X-Men so this franchise is essentially living off borrowed time.  I can't help but feel a little sad  that this franchise that kicked off the modern wave of the superhero genre post-Batman and Robin in the early 2000's  last installment is one of the least superhero anticipated movies in recent memory. Most seem apathetic and just don't care. 1:06:16 Michael Louis WeaselboyHey Sean I was just wondering who would you cast as Norman Osborn in the MCU?? And how exactly do you think they will feature him in the franchise?? Should he mainly be in the Spider man films?? Or could he be in the team up films?? I know Marvel doesn't own him technically but I hope that changes soon. I'm sure he can be the Lex Luthor of the MCU. Would you make him the main villain for the third film?? Thoughts??1:10:07 BenHey Sean! I was looking at Captain Marvel's IMDB and saw that Carol's brother is named Steve. Do you think her dad could be a Cap fan and named his son after Steve Rogers? This could also explain Carol's desire to join the military, maybe to impress her dad, and the somewhat similar design to her costume. And this could give the two Caps an instant connection in Endgame.1:11:44 BenSpeaking of Captain Marvel, do you think Carol will show up in the next Endgame trailer?1:14:05 Hector Giovanni NavarreteDo you think with BP being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and possibly winning, we have to wait on that, is it more likely for AE to get a Best Picture nomination? I know you mentioned that each Superhero/comic book movie has build off each other to get us to this first time historic achievement. Also you mentioned how you would have loved to have seen IW get an Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture nomination as a 10 year story arc. Do you think the Academy is potentially waiting to see the "culmination" of the whole arc in AE? I mean I know maybe "waiting" is the wrong word. But you know what I mean?1:18:55 MayaHi Sean! I am a new patron, but I've been a long time listener of the podcast. You may have discussed this in past Q&As but what are your theories behind how Vision will play a role in AE? I read a theory that Vision is essentially living in the Mind Stone and influencing Thanos' every move. I also read a theory that Shuri was able to download his mind before her encounter with Corvis Glave and will probably bring back a new Vision (assuming she went underground and isn't dead from the snap). Do any of these sound reasonable or do you think there is another way? I am also pretty certain that Shuri is not dead. How do you think she will play a role in AE? I think it would DOPE to see her and Spiderman team up or her and Tony putting their minds together to figure out how to leverage the quantum realm. The Source Material gang gather round for a discussion of the Marvel/Hulu series, Runaways! Marvel's Runaways, or simply Runaways, is an American web television series created for Hulu by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films and other television series of the franchise. The series is produced by ABC Signature Studios, Marvel Television and Fake Empire Productions, with Schwartz and Savage serving as showrunners. Rhenzy Feliz, Lyrica Okano, Virginia Gardner, Ariela Barer, Gregg Sulkin, and Allegra Acosta star as the Runaways, six teenagers from different backgrounds who unite against their parents, the Pride, portrayed by Angel Parker, Ryan Sands, Annie Wersching, Kip Pardue, Ever Carradine, James Marsters, Brigid Brannagh, Kevin Weisman, Brittany Ishibashi, and James Yaegashi. A film from Marvel Studios based on the Runaways began development in May 2008, before being shelved in 2013 due to the success of The Avengers. In August 2016, Marvel Television announced that Runaways had received a pilot order from Hulu, after being developed and written by Schwartz and Savage.
