Dr. History's Tales of the Old West

Millions of acres of prairie was ideal for raising cattle. Richard King and John Chisum had the largest ranches with thousands of cattle and horses. New homesteaders lived in one room shacks or dugouts until they could build a proper ranch house. A ranch with a good water supply was essential. The rancher had to design his own brand and how to mark his cattle with a "wattle" and an earmark. Learn more about your ad choices.

Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory was the setting of a brutal conflict between rival factions vying for control of the county's dry goods and cattle interests. The Lincoln County War, as it came to be known, began in 1878 and persisted until 1881, a time of lawlessness and bloodshed in the Old West. One side of the feud was led by James Dolan, a powerful figure who wielded a monopoly over dry goods through his establishment "The House". The other faction was established by English-born John Tunstall and his partner Alexander McSween, who opened their own competing store with support from established cattleman John Chisum. Both sides gathered lawmen, businessmen, and criminal gangs to their aid, setting the stage for a violent and deadly confrontation. The Dolan faction was aligned with Sheriff William J. Brady and supported by the notorious Jesse Evans Gang. The Tunstall-McSween faction organized their own armed posse, the Lincoln County Regulators, with their own lawmen in the form of town constable Richard M. Brewer and Deputy US Marshal Robert A. Widenmann. And of course the notorious Billy the Kid. The War was characterized by a series of brutal revenge killings, starting with the murder of Tunstall by members of a Dolan authorized posse and the Evans Gang. The Regulators retaliated by killing Sheriff Brady and others in a series of violent incidents. The conflict continued to escalate for several months, culminating in the epic five-day battle of Lincoln, which resulted in the death of McSween and the dispersal of the Regulators. William H. Bonney rode into Lincoln County a teenager on the run from a noose. By the time he came out of McSween's burning home, guns blazing, he was well on the way to becoming the legend known as Billy the Kid. This is part three in the series on Billy the Kid. John Chisum, founder of Nashville Christian Songwriters, says that in spite of a successful career as music business executive and songwriter . . .   “At age 58 my life fell apart. I found myself struggling to connect with God, myself, my loved ones, and with meaningful ministry and work. It all just came to a grinding halt. I was hitting rock bottom in almost every area of my life. I fell into a darkness I had never known before.   “That was the toughest year of my life, but little did I know that it was all a set up for something much bigger: a new me that was much braver, much bolder, much more fearless and internally successful than ever before.   “I want to share what I've learned these last few years. I want to share how changing my perspective on faith, God, and myself has allowed me to flourish like never before.”

In this solo episode, John helps you to abandon the urban myth that you are “waiting on God” for the inspiration to write great songs. He shares boldly that what most Christian songwriters are waiting on will never come and how to end the needless passivity of expecting downloads and inspirational lightning strikes as a creator. Key insights shared in this episode are: Why it's dangerous to have a philosophy of waiting for inspiration to strike Why we shouldn't beg for God's presence to “show up” The real New Testament perspective on the presence of God by His Spirit What it means to be “in-spirited” as Christian songwriters The need to cultivate a deep awareness of the presence of God every day The Apostle Paul's prayer for “true enlightenment” How to be an inspiring person and live an inspired life Taking inspired action in life and songwriting Why gaining significant songwriting skills is as important as inspiration and why not having them is the real reason you're not writing at a higher level This episode is a must-listen for any aspiring writer who wants to make every day count. John doesn't believe in tips, tricks, and hacks, but in a solid process for songwriting built on dedication and true creativity.  CONNECT WITH MUSIC CITY ACOUSTICS For a special discount, make sure you mention “THE CHIZPOD” when you place your first order. Death Row inmates are among some of the most forgotten populations in our society, but not for “The Shack” author, Wm. Paul Young, and his friend, Wes Yoder. Paul and Wes have been spending a lot of time doing what Jesus said in Matthew 25, “I was in prison and you came to visit me,” spending time with a group of Jesus' followers on Death Row in a Nashville prison. Young, whose book “The Shack” has sold over 20 million copies and was adapted into a blockbuster movie, exudes the love of God everywhere he goes with a message of acceptance and grace for all. Receiving God's grace in a tangible way from his wife and family after admitting to a three-year affair and facing the dark memories of childhood sexual abuse and rejection became the basis for “The Shack” that has impacted millions with a fresh look at the love and forgiveness of God for us, in spite of our own anger towards Him. Included in this episode is a cellphone conversation with death row inmate Terry King, who shares the profound story of his conversion after reading “The Shack'' and his treasured relationships with Young and Yoder. He also tells about his profound reconciliation with a close family member of the man who lost his life at Terry's hands thirty-nine years ago. Show host John Chisum, Young, and long-time friend, Wes Yoder, explore how the love of Christ reaches every person on the planet regardless of their life circumstances, including being incarcerated.  Wes Yoder has helped promote speakers and authors for over four decades including Wm. If you know rock and roll, you know NEEDTOBREATHE. Hailing from Possum Kingdom, SC, this trio of hard rocking musicians have been at it for two decades and counting, straddling Christian and mainstream charts with their own blend of Gospel, roots, and pop.  Show host, John Chisum, sat down recently with the band’s founder and frontman, Bear Rinehart, not long after the birth of Bear’s third child, to talk about the backstories of their new album Out of Body and the new normal they’re in with the departure of Bear’s brother Bo from the group.  NEEDTOBREATHE has won 16 GMA Dove Awards, have been nominated for Grammys, and are a platinum-certified band with over 1M albums sold. They have a solid fan base and have toured with the likes of Tim McGraw & Faith Hill and Taylor Swift. Their 2013 rockumentary Prove the Poets Wrong is a must-see if you’re already a fan or just want to find out more about them. In this powerful interview, Bear talked a lot about songwriting, demos and production, as well as more intimate subjects like his battle for mental health and how the band has had to come to terms with conflict after he and brother Bo came to a literal brawl after a show a few years back.  Song Revolution with John Chisum is sponsored by Nashville Christian Songwriters, a coaching and resource company dedicated to empowering Christian songwriters worldwide. Kari, one of the most wholesome and loved worship leaders of our time, maintains her childlike perspectives on worship and ministry despite worldwide acclaim, multiple awards, and accolades. Her name, Kari, even means “purity” and pure worship and love for God flow from her in every moment of this new interview with show host, John Chisum. “It was like sitting down with a sweet friend, or my younger sister,” says Chisum. “Kari is so open about where she is now after so many successful years of ministry and how she’s been able to go even deeper in the Word when a lot of people burn out. I love this interview!” Listen in as Kari shares from her heart the realities of raising children during the Covid-19 pandemic, the challenges of touring with children and husband, worship leader, Cody Carnes, as well as sharing her deepest struggles as a single person before God brought Cody into her life. John and Kari discuss her lengthy history of breakthrough worship songs such as Revelation Song, Holy Spirit, Healer, No Sweeter Name, and Forever, and the global impact of her latest offering in The Blessing, co-written with Pastor Steven Furtick, Carnes, and Christopher Brown. “I think what feels really sweet on this and what feels a little different is these songs really,” she says. “I really dug deep for this album and for every song that's on the project, there's probably five that didn't make it. I just remembered saying to Cody,’I don't want to put anything on this project that won't work at church and in a congregational setting.’” If you’ve followed the powerful worship ministry of Kari Jobe for years or are new to her music, you’ll love hearing her tender heart for worship and her desire that you go deeper in your own devotional life.

After years of member transition and internal uncertainty with how or even why to move forward, they are leaning on Hebrews 10:23 – “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who is promised is faithful.” The band – made up of Matt Hein (vocals, guitar), Abbie Parker, (vocals), Brandon Chase (vocals, guitar), Justin Shinn (keys) and Nicole Hickman (drums) – poured the challenges of the past, hope for the future, and a newfound joy for the present into their third album, Faithful God. Show host, John Chisum, met up with IAT’s Abbie Parker and Matt Hein at K-LOVE Studios in Franklin, TN, to discuss the new album and the new season they find themselves in as they weather the storms 2020 has brought to us all. This engaging interview includes how the band moved an entire tour online when the world was shutting down for Covid-19 and their own coping strategies in quarantine. “I’ve loved their music from their first album,” Chisum says. “And I loved their transparency in talking with me about their personal struggles with addiction and relationship meltdowns, including Abbie’s divorce, Matt’s former addiction to pornography, and Justin’s miraculous recovery from a near-lethal addiction to heroin.” IAT discussed welcoming their newest member, Brandon Chase, on vocals and guitar for this album. Chase graduated from Berklee College of Music at age 17, joined Team Blake on The Voice, and was voted ‘Crush of the Week’ by Seventeen Magazine. Hope Darst is a Fair Trade recording artist and a worship leader at the Belongingco church in Nashville alongside the likes of Natalie Grant, Mia Fieldes, Meredith Andrews, and many more well-known worship leaders and artists. But a record deal and commercial exposure were a long time in the making for Hope. It was a dream she had all but given up on. Hope felt from a young age that she was destined to sing. She had tried to launch her career several times, but to no avail. As she describes now, her dream was put on hold for years as God worked on her from the inside out. She calls those her “basement years” when she was learning to be a great wife and Mom, delaying her lifelong musical aspirations. But all that has begun to change. While diligently seeking the Lord and practicing her faith in contentment and obscurity, God has steadily been increasing Hope’s visibility as a worship leader and songwriter. Opportunities she could not have engineered have been found and she is now launching a music career at a time when many would be looking to leave touring and public ministry for a quieter time at home. But God had different plans and more than a few surprises waiting for Hope. Debuting at radio during the first weeks of the global Coronavirus pandemic, her first single after years of waiting in the wings, Peace Be Still, should have been shut down like the rest of the world. Instead, it has become a massive chorus of faith during this crisis. And no one is more surprised than Hope herself. “All I cared about, John, was God. I want the Spirit of God to be on this song, “Hope tells John Chisum during this powerful interview. “I've heard it said before that, when you write songs from an encounter with the Lord, you lock up that encounter within the song. And when it is sung over people or when other people sing it, they, too, then have that encounter released into their own lives.” In this personable interview, John Chisum and Hope Darst discuss the deep...

BEC Recordings’ artists Andrew Enos and Michael Landingham (“Lion & Bear”) have suffered more than their fair share of loss and tragedies. The young California natives, actual brothers-in-law, have adopted the theme of lament for their music. And rightly so. Michael and his wife lost their twin sons within days of their birth. It was their first pregnancy. Then Andrew and his wife lost a son to stillbirth. Michael’s sister later lost her battle with cancer and Michael, a worship leader, found himself caught up in an alcohol addiction that was only broken as God brought new music, and new opportunities, to the duo. In this powerful conversation with John Chisum, they discuss how the unusual blend of grieving and creativity brought them together to begin their band named after the two animals David slew before conquering the giant Goliath. Michael, through tears, texted a poignant verse and chorus recorded on his cell phone to Andrew that became the catalyst of their first single “Held By Your Love.”  “There’s just nothing that can prepare you to be holding your lifeless child, but I think there are beautiful things that come from tragedy,” says Andrew. Showcasing the heart of both a lion and a bear, the duo’s self-titled debut from BEC Recordings serves as a fitting introduction to the pair’s experimental sonics, boundless creativity, and thoughtful lyricism, revealing they’re not afraid to wade into the pain with people. “Lion & Bear bring a fresh sound and message to the BEC Recordings roster,” says Brian Ortize, BEC’s A&R Director. “Not only is the music powerful and emotional, but there is personal story of hope and healing behind every lyric.” Andrew and Michael’s belief that “lament and comfort can exist in the same song” is echoed in every track. Every listener will find healing and comfort for their own distress and loss. Listening to the music of Lion and Bear feels like tapping into the heart of the psalms, those sometimes agonizing laments and exclamations of sorrow mingled with hope and praise. Host John Chisum says of the interview, “The band is new, but the depth of these guys is amazing. Our conversation was all about how the pain is real, yet, somehow on the other side of it all, God shows you that He’s been with you in it all along. He’s big enough to receive your lament in the hard times and your songs of praise in the good times.”

John Chisum has a candid conversation with Kim about worship, the struggles of leadership, managing family and ministry, and the traumas of her childhood that have made her a deep-feeling worshiper. Kim shares openly about childhood abuse and trauma and the miraculous healing journey God has led her through from her book, Brave Surrender: Let God’s Love Rewrite Your Story (Zondervan: 2019). Celebrating the release of her new solo album Wild Heart, Kim says, "My last record, On My Side, was a collection of songs written from a desert season of my life. I was processing grief, anger, and pain. God met me in the desert and brought life and healing. Emerging from the desert, ushered me into a season fresh with new life. This new album is a strong declaration of freedom and who God is. On the other side of a desert season is growth, deeper connection to Jesus, and a new authority. In the desert, all my doubts and questions came to the surface. I wondered if God was truly as good and as faithful as He says. I asked if He could truly bring the freedom I longed for and the healing I needed. He met me in that place and not only proved His faithfulness, but taught me in greater measure who He is."  If you love Bethel Worship and Jesus Culture, don’t miss this powerful conversation with iconic worship leader and songwriter, Kim Walker-Smith.

Few Christian Songwriters have the privilege of sharing their songs on the international stage, and Christian rock band Tenth Avenue North is privileged to continually find themselves at the top of the list. Through thoughtful and intentional songwriting, they are tackling tough topics like addiction, suicide, depression, religion, and faith - effectively unveiling the stigmas that hold people back from a full life in Christ. John Chisum enjoyed a deep and meaningful conversation with Mike Donehey and Jeff Owen - two thirds of Tenth Avenue North. They unpack the songwriting process, inspiration, and tricks for successful co-writing that will help you grow in your songwriting craft.
