On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, we welcome Damon Lembi, a seasoned leader in the learning and development space, as we delve into the intricacies of building a customer-centric culture through effective leadership. As the CEO of Learn It, a live learning platform that has empowered over 2 million learners, Damon brings a wealth of knowledge from his sports and business backgrounds. Our conversation revolves around fostering an organizational learning culture and how this can drive personal and organizational growth. A key theme in our discussion is the concept of a "learn-it-all" culture versus a "know-it-all" mindset. Damon emphasizes that fostering an environment where employees feel safe to experiment, fail, and learn is vital to success. He discusses how leaders must model this behaviour by being vulnerable and sharing their learning journeys, thus encouraging team members to engage in their growth. He underscores authentic leadership as creating a space where everyone can thrive and innovate, enhancing customer experiences. We also explore the crucial role of mentorship in nurturing a learning organization. Damon explains that internal mentorship programs can bridge knowledge gaps and facilitate cross-departmental understanding, breaking down silos critical for collaboration. Additionally, he discusses the reciprocal nature of mentoring, highlighting how leaders often learn as much from their mentees as they teach, further enriching the learning environment. Our conversation touches on the ever-changing work landscape, emphasizing the need for leaders to develop learning agility—the ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Damon stresses that as the world evolves, so must the skills and processes we rely on, urging leaders to embrace change rather than resist it. The rise of artificial intelligence is also addressed, with Damon encouraging listeners to engage with emerging technologies to remain relevant in tomorrow's workforce. As we conclude, Damon shares actionable insights on creating a feedback-rich environment where trust and open communication flourish. He reminds us that self-awareness is foundational to effective leadership and decision-making. Leaders can better engage with their teams by peeling back the layers of self-awareness, leading to more authentic interactions. How much do you invest in training your employees, and how much should you allocate? According to the Association for Talent Development's 2023 State of the Industry report, organizations spent an average of $1,220 per employee on training, which is slightly less than the previous year. Some employees view training primarily as a reward and assess it based on their satisfaction rather than its impact on their performance or work output. Similarly, some managers treat training as a supplement or substitute for performance feedback and do not adequately evaluate its outcomes. In 2023, companies spent an average of $954 per learner on training, which includes methodologies like virtual reality (VR) and other technologies. The amount spent on training varies by company size; typically, small companies invest more while large companies spend less. Great leaders are not born; they are continuously evolving. They consistently work on improving themselves, their organizations, and their leadership skills. Damon Lembi, a two-time bestselling author, host of The Learn-It-All Podcast, and CEO of Learnit—a live learning platform that has upskilled over 2 million individuals—brings an athlete's perspective to leadership drawn from his background in baseball. Struggling to say no? This inspiring convo will have you feeling motivated to focus on your strengths and say no to distractions. In this episode, Adam Hill sits down with ex-pro baller turned CEO, Damon Lembi, to discuss his journey from the baseball field to the boardroom. Damon gets real about facing rejection from the draft and battling depression after his baseball dreams were dashed. But he didn't let that hold him back - hear how he worked his way up from receptionist at his family's business to transforming it into a leader development powerhouse. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Damon's path: sports to business Facing rejection from the MLB draft and dealing with depression The hedgehog theory The Big Three and power of gratitude Learning how to say no Prioritizing partnerships over pennies A learn-it-all vs. a know-it-all Episode Highlights: [08:44] Overcoming rejection and depression to find new purpose Damon faced rejection from the MLB draft despite his success and battled depression, but was able to overcome this adversity by finding a new purpose leading his family's training business. [13:10] The choice to move forward and dive headfirst Facing challenges, we can either let the past hold us back or muster the courage to dive headfirst into new opportunities and not dwell on what could have been. [19:28] Applying the hedgehog theory To best serve clients, companies should thoughtfully consider client needs but also maintain the discipline to focus on their core strengths rather than chasing every request. [25:03] The Big Three Damon credits Michael Hyatt's productivity method of setting a “big three” that involves identifying the three most important quarterly goals to focus on achieving. [30:11] There's power to saying no Saying no to opportunities that do not align with your priorities is important for maintaining focus and balance in life. [31:56] Prioritize partnerships over pennies Damon believes it's best to work with clients who treat you as a partner rather than just focusing on money. That's why sometimes, it's necessary to refer smaller, difficult clients to competitors. [33:36] A learn-it-all vs. a know-it-all As a leader, Damon believes it is important to maintain a learner mindset open to new ideas rather than thinking you have all the answers. [35:19] Overcoming imposter syndrome in three steps Damon discusses three ways to overcome imposter syndrome: identify your fears, work hard through preparation, and learn to let go. [38:06] Be willing to surround yourself with people that are willing to tell you NO. Invite feedback by directly asking others if they watched your recent work and how you could improve. [41:48] Hire for potential over experience Damon believes in hiring for potential over experience alone and valuing the right cultural fit above all else when building a top performing team. Are you a know-it-all, a learn-it-all, or a little bit of both? Whichever way you tend to lean reveals plenty about the kind of leader you are and the level of success you can achieve. Damon Lembi is the CEO of Learnit, a global leader in corporate training solutions that has upskilled more than 1.8 million professionals in the past twenty-seven years. After dedicating the initial 22 years of his life to the pursuit of becoming a Major League Baseball player, Damon pivoted in 1995 to help his father, Walt Lembi (Founder of Learnit), by investing his heart and soul in Learnit. His aim was to help individuals gain the knowledge and confidence they needed to attain their professional goals through the value of education. Long before his brush with fame in a hotel room party with Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses, Damon was drafted by the Atlanta Braves out of high school. A series of events eventually led him back to the family business, where he found himself unsure of the skills he was bringing to the table. He recognized that while business was in his blood, he had a lot to learn about every aspect of the work. After years of incredible success, Damon's key life takeaway is that there is immense value in being your true, authentic self. Whether you work for a billion-dollar business or a startup, the way you treat people matters. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expected it to, but when it's time to pivot — whether it's from baseball or business — the more you are willing to learn from people who are smarter than you, the more successful you will be. Damon recognizes that he is a know-it-all when it comes to sales, but he is also very open to learning more when it comes to scaling up. He shares the lessons he learned from the pandemic, where he turns when he is ready to learn something new, and the value of approaching leadership in curious and humble ways.
