Beyond the Physical. A Dive into Mental Training with Mental Performance Coach Michelle Newton Episode 36: Show Notes Our society has an obsession with winning, but that's not what sport should be about. It should be about showing up, putting in your best effort, and pushing your own boundaries, no matter what level you are competing at. In today's episode, I'm joined by mental performance coach, Michelle Newton, who knows from personal experience how debilitating a negative head game can be. The mindset struggles that she was able to overcome inspired her to support others in the same way, and this led her to found Momentum Sport. Challenges are inevitable, but if you can learn to focus on what you can control (your attitude and effort level) rather than what you can't (the outcome), you will begin to see that the journey is much more important than how quickly you cross the finish line. Key Points From This Episode: Introducing today's guest, Michelle Newton, founder of Momentum Sport. The many sports that Michelle takes part in. Michelle's personal battle of overcoming a negative mindset. The success that Michelle saw when she began using visualization techniques. The problem with placing too much emphasis on winning, and what you should be focusing on instead. Lessons from an iconic American coach. The lack of mental performance coaching that was available when Michelle was growing up. The power that sport holds in terms of personal development. The increased interest in mental coaching, and the gender split of Michelle's clients. Michelle shares an example that highlights the value of mental performance coaching. What a session with Michelle will generally involve (although it will be tailored to each individual). The importance of learning to be present in the moment. Tweetables: “My history and the suffering I endured because of a weak head game really piqued my interest in [mental performance coaching].” — Michelle Newton [0:04:27] “In our society, we are very much of the mindset win and results and outcome. You want that in the back of your mind, but you won't want that to govern your performance on game day.” — Michelle Newton [0:06:48] “Showing up, staying a little longer for practice, being prepared, putting in the effort; those are the things we should focus on and those are the things completely within the athletes' control.” — Michelle Newton [0:10:53] “I don't think it matters what level you're at. What matters is your commitment to having a strong head game.” — Michelle Newton [0:16:44] “Challenge is in our lives. It's not going away. As the stakes get higher, the challenges get greater, and that's awesome. The suffering is optional.” — Michelle Newton [0:16:58] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Michelle Newton on LinkedIn Michelle Newton on Instagram Momentum Sport Momentum Sport Email Britt Anderson Britt Anderson on Instagram

If you've ever been frustrated by the fact that the same training methods that work for men simply do not work for women, then this episode is for you! Today, we are joined by Dr. Stacy Sims, an applied researcher, innovator, and entrepreneur in human performance, specifically the sex differences in training, nutrition, and environmental conditions. When studying nutrition, science, and exercise physiology, Dr. Sims became increasingly frustrated that proven physiological protocols and methodologies were based on male data and were not applicable to women. Today, she joins us to discuss how we as women should be training our bodies, fueling our bodies, and factoring in our hormones to maximize our performance potential. Hear about how, as women, our cycles influence our physical abilities when training and we need to learn to listen to them and individualize our methods. We also discuss how different phases of life like puberty and menopause influence our bodies and how we can accommodate these hormonal changes for optimal physiological health. Life After Deaf: Finding Grace, Balance, and Beauty in a Life Without Sound with Monique Williamson Episode 07: Show Notes. Can you imagine what it's like waking up one morning to find that you can no longer hear? What raising two children, running a business, and being a new wife must be like when you have to navigate a whole new (silent) world? Our guest today, Monique Williamson, talks to us about how she advocated through the healthcare system and managed to find fulfillment in life after going deaf. She shares her traumatic experience with persistent vertigo, undergoing every test and therapy in the book, and leaving the hospital with no answers for years. When her hearing failed to return, she eventually opted for cochlear implants, which changed her life and facilitated hearing in her one ear. But, after numerous consequent health problems and misdiagnoses, it was later discovered that the severe ulcers in her throat and colon were caused by Crohn's disease. What stands out from the conversation is Monique's appeal to listeners about being their own advocates when it comes to their health, testifying to the many slip-ups the doctors and nurses had made during her five years of suffering. Our guest also talks about how she stays positive and why it is so important to keep focused on what you have rather than what you've lost in the most difficult periods of life. Episode 05: Show Notes: 'Tis the Season of Added Stress as the Holidays are Upon Us Amidst A Global Pandemic: Signs to Watch for to Avoid Adrenal Fatigue and Burnout w/ Dr. Sarah Harbottle RN. Daily life in the modern world is stressful, and with Christmas on the way as well as a global pandemic on our hands, the risks of burnout are bigger than ever. Today we explore the subject of adrenal fatigue as well as approaches to preventing and recovering from this syndrome with Dr. Sarah Harbottle, a naturopathic doctor practicing in British Columbia. Dr. Harbottle begins by telling the story of how the burnout she was experiencing in her twenties from her stressful career as a corporate lawyer led her to seek out the help of a naturopathic doctor. The treatment she received was so beneficial to her that she decided to study to become a naturopathic doctor herself, and we talk about how she incorporates this philosophy into the way she treats patients feeling the effects of burnout. For Dr. Harbottle, the treatment and prevention of adrenal fatigue centers around an integrated approach that incorporates a healthy balance of many factors including sleep, diet, exercise, perception, and supplements. We also talk about lifestyles that cause adrenal fatigue, what the term ‘adrenal fatigue' refers to and how to diagnose this syndrome, and the role cortisol levels play in feelings of burnout. So, if you are feeling like you are in a constant state of fight or flight, this episode could help you take the first steps toward a lifestyle change and lead you back to a state of calm and centeredness. Key Points From This Episode: An overview of Dr. Harbottle's career; her switch from corporate law into naturopathic medicine. Harbottle's lifestyle and experience of adrenal fatigue while she was a corporate lawyer. How naturopathic medicine helped Dr. Harbottle recover from adrenal fatigue. The negative effects of stress and the work Dr. Harbottle does to help patients be less stressed. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue and how the condition changes as it gets worse. The process of ‘diagnosing' adrenal fatigue by ruling out other conditions first. How the term ‘adrenal fatigue' is controversial because it describes a syndrome, or a group of symptoms. Treating adrenal fatigue: Optimizing sleep, reducing caffeine, mind-body therapy, herbs. The line between healthy exercise and overexercising; how the latter exacerbates adrenal fatigue. How cortisol is good for us but if our levels are too high this contributes to adrenal fatigue. Methods for being proactive with health to avoid burnout and adrenal fatigue. High stress levels and the pandemic; how to keep this to a minimum right now. Juggling plastic and glass balls: An analogy that helps us prioritize. Essential supplements in Dr. Harbottle's cupboard for sleep, gut health, and adrenal health. Harbottle's methods for keeping her own adrenal health intact right now. Regular meals versus intermittent fasting for different body types. What Dr. Harbottle's morning routine looks like as a mom of three. A deeper dive into Dr. Harbottle's individualized treatment approach. Tweetables: “My first experience with naturopathic medicine was as a fairly stressed out junior lawyer, so I sought out naturopathic medicine to help with that – with stress and burnout, with adrenal fatigue.” — Dr. Sarah Harbottle [0:02:07] “If you perceive something as stressful it will be stressful and your body will react, but if you can switch your mindset so that stressor isn't actually perceived as such, then you are not going to have that same physiological response.” — Dr. Sarah Harbottle [0:06:36] “Cortisol is good, but you want to have the right output. Too much is going to make you feel anxious. It's that fight or flight response.” — Dr. Sarah Harbottle [0:15:52] “A big one with our adrenal health is really working on our boundaries.” — Dr. Sarah Harbottle [0:20:48] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: www.momsweatsanity.com

From there, we turn to some strategies and methods for addressing these kinds of issues, starting with conversations and the examples that are set for children.
