Meredith is easily one of the most interesting and unusual people we've ever had on the podcast, and her story is a testament to just how much small-town living appeals to all kinds of people, even people that you may not expect. This episode is all about how Meredith–a Marin County, California native–found herself in rural South Dakota, and what we can do to make our small towns more welcoming for all different kinds of people who want to make their lives here. About Meredith: Meredith McMurray was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. She was home-schooled for all but one of her twelve grade school years. Then, in 2006, she enlisted into the US Marine Corps at age 18 and served four years active duty, deploying twice during that time. After an Honorable Discharge, Meredith began an exploration into the world of health and healing practices such as yoga, neuromuscular therapy, meditation, self-inquiry, and performing arts! She began learning Aerial Acrobatics in 2012, at first as a hobby. By 2016, Meredith began making a living off of teaching and performing Aerial Acrobatics. In May 2019, Meredith was presented with an opportunity to take over ownership of Aerial Arts Fairfax (IG account no longer managed), a local beloved Aerial Academy in Fairfax, CA. The offer was for Meredith to purchase the business and facilitate over 200 actively enrolled students to continue their training—or watch it close and cease to exist due to the original founder opting to retire earlier in 2019. Out of pure love for the art form (and a lack of awareness of what was to come), Meredith took a risk and invested five figures of borrowed money into purchasing the business. Aerial Arts Fairfax had eight great months under Meredith's leadership, and then March 2020 came along... Obliterated by the statewide lockdowns and dysfunctional social practices implemented by the majority in the San Francisco Bay Area, Meredith consciously chose to no longer serve that community with her business nor her physical presence. Meredith had heard former Governor Kristi Noem say, "All South Dakotans are Essential." So, after sixteen total months of fighting to regain any sense of meaning or purpose in California, Meredith packed her Prius and drove to South Dakota with no plan. Once she arrived, Meredith was able to shake hands with Gov. Kristi Noem and thank her for standing up for the people of South Dakota and their occupations. Then, Meredith was able to work a seasonal job in South Dakota and earn enough to pay herself back from the five-figure financial wound created by the State of California. After that, Meredith moved across state lines four times before eventually returning back to South Dakota, where she has been living for the last 2.5 years. By no means is Meredith walking off into the sunset... She continues to wake up every morning wondering how she can best serve the community, make real friends, and express important messages in whatever form. Why Meredith doesn't want to grow and scale a team Meredith is struggling with a great problem to have: Getting too many requests for her design services. She's learning how to take discovery calls, explaining how her process works, and scheduling out (sometimes weeks or months). She sets the expectation that it may be weeks before she can connect back to work on their project. But then she communicates via email, notes in the mail, etc. She'll have those clients work on creating a Pinterest board to fill in the gap during those weeks. Meredith is busier than ever, but she isn't interested in growing and scaling a team right now. She loves what she does and chooses to outsource when necessary. She works with a virtual assistant and outsources renderings and sourcing tasks. Business tips for new interior designers What has Meredith learned from her first couple of years as a new interior designer? Tip #1: It's not just about charging a design fee. Whenever you can, open up wholesale accounts and purchase furnishings directly from them. A large portion of Meredith's revenue has come from the margin she makes on furnishings. Tip #2: Trust your gut. Meredith agreed to do some design work for a couple despite seeing numerous red flags. Meredith requires her clients to request revisions within one week of her design presentation. After her design presentation, this client asked for more than a week to decide. Two months later, they asked her for a refund of her design fees. Tip #3: Don't take every job that comes your way. Only work with people who appreciate what you're doing for them. Today we welcome Dallas-based interior designer Meredith Ellis to the show. Meredith has over two decades of experience in the industry and specializes in creating soulful, layered homes that are sophisticated yet livable. Her career began while she worked under the legendary Bunny Williams in NYC before moving west to hone her skills with internationally renowned designer Michael Smith. Meredith is also the founder of JAMES showroom featuring fabric, wallpaper, furniture, lighting, and carpets for Texas and the South. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Traditional Home, Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, and The LA Times. We dive into Meredith's “seamless” use of fabrics with patterns, colors, and textures and tips and tricks for how (and where) to use them! What You'll Hear on This Episode: How did Meredith start a career in design? What tips & tricks did Meredith learn from working for legendary designers? Where should we begin with fabrics? What are the best fabrics for tufting? What patterns does Meredith gravitate to for sofas, drapes, and wallpapers, respectively? All about how to use fabric for lampshades. Does Meredith have tips for making bold vs. subtle decisions with patterns? How Meredith was able to use fabric in a modern way for the Kips Bay Room. When does Meredith like to use a mural wallpaper? How to bring fabric with textures and patterns into bedding. What's the best way to familiarize yourself with fabrics before choosing? Where does Meredith draw inspiration and influence? What antique malls and dealers does Meredith love? Decorating Dilemma: Hi Kristen, Your house has such classic and beautiful bones. I think the biggest bang for your buck is going to be painting and adding some color. I would draw color from the living room maybe from the Oriental rug; I would probably use sage or gray blues. Drawing shades from nature is a great way to get comfortable adding color. A real show stopper is just painting your walls, trim, and window casings. If you are just going to paint the dining room, I would do maybe a soft gray-blue and then your millwork a little darker to give some depth. On the ceiling, I would lighten up that color by half. If you need storage I would paint that breakfront a pretty high gloss color; either a contrast like black or dark dark green. You could also do wallpaper in the back of the cabinets and display the china there. In terms of the drapery, I don't think you have to do the same fabric in both of the rooms. You can do one as a pattern (in the dining room) and maybe one a little more tame (in the living room). Just have them relate on some level, but they definitely don't have to be the same. One of the other things you could do is use some bold art as a great statement piece; maybe something with some color. Since you're on a budget you could try places like Facebook Marketplace, antique malls, Chairish, or 1st Dibs. On the rug, it depends on how bold you go with art, but it definitely needs to be a low pile so you can move chairs easily in and out. You could do sisal but I would not do another Oriental since that's in your living room. Maybe a pretty stripe, diamond, or another geometric pattern. When you get to the point that your budget allows it, I would do some pretty upholstered chairs for the dining room–something that's really durable especially if you have kids. Think performance fabric or pattern. Otherwise, just paint the window frames. I also love painting doors a contrast color, so if you want you can paint the french doors either a fun color or go darker than whatever you choose for the millwork. But I really think we gotta get some green in there. A little paint can really make such an impact! This house has such great bones…good luck and please send us some pics! In this episode, Meredith shares the story of how she recently discovered her children's tongue ties or tethered oral ties (TOTS), as well as her own. She explains why tongue ties can be a problem for children and adults, as well as infants. You'll learn about the signs of sleep disorders and tongue ties and uncover one of the causes of frustrating feeding problems for babies. Listen to this podcast to find out who can support you if you are would like to find out if you or your child has a tongue tie or sleep disorder. Tongue ties and sleep disorders are very common. Be sure to watch or listen to this episode to gain insight that you may need someday, whether you need to know for yourself, your child, or someone you care about! Be sure to watch for Part 2 of this topic. Meredith will talk about her son's tongue tie release, her own release, her daughter's experience with a palate expander, and report how health is improving for her family. What are oral ties? These are bands of tissue that form under the tongue, inside the upper and lower lip, and inside the cheeks. It's normal to have them. But some ties are restrictive and inhibit proper tongue/lip function. They can range from thick to thin, be easy to spot when the tongue is lifted or they may be hidden. (Posterior tongue ties are under the tongue at the base.) Ties can form between the teeth-creating a space. Or they may restrict the tongue from sticking out or reaching up to the palate. A professional will know if your ties are problema Highlights: Are feeding struggles a sign of oral ties? What are the health symptoms of oral ties? What are the signs of apnea and sleep disorders? The conversation around identity has evolved greatly in recent years, and this progress has been so important for many people. However there is still a long way to go to a more inclusive and accepting world, and we are joined today by someone who is adding a beautiful and complex voice to the discussion! Meredith Talusan is a transgendered woman, born with albinism in the Philippines, and who later immigrated to the US. Her relationship to acceptance and belonging has always been a complex one, a relationship she explores in her book, Fairest, and in today's episode! We get to dive deep into her journey, talking about external perceptions and inner realities, her writing for many prominent publications, and her current role as contributing editor at Them, Conde Nast's LGBTQ online platform. Meredith is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at Free Method Nutrition, a virtual group nutrition practice that exists to equip women with the skills to overcome and the wisdom to move beyond the influences of diet culture. Meredith discovered Mindfulness while struggling to strike a healthy work-life balance, an issue all too prevalent in the nursing profession. Her graduate Capstone project focused on the lack of self-care training in nursing school curricula. Introducing Mindfulness to undergraduate nursing students builds resilience at the student level, arming novice nurses with coping skills to thrive in the harsh healthcare environment throughout their entire career. Meredith has more than a decade of experience as a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care nurse. She has always loved the educational role of nurses and enjoys sharing her knowledge as a Neonatal Resuscitation Program Instructor, Lead S.T.A.B.L.E Instructor, and as adjunct faculty for a baccalaureate nursing program. It doesn't take two to tango. Do you ever feel frustrated, disconnected, or misaligned with your spouse or partner? Does it seem like the spark and passion you once had is gone? Have you ever thought that maybe your relationship has run its course, and it's time to go separate ways? If so, I've got good news for you! There is hope for you, AND change is possible, even if you have to work on it without your partner. Free Masterclass: “How Peaceful Parenting RUINED My Marriage...and How I Saved It.” theparentingjunkie.com/marriage In this episode, I interview Meredith. Things we discussed: How she felt overwhelmed by the demands of life, the unrealistic expectations of society for partners and parents. She was so tired of how everyone paints this [phony] picture of what life is supposed to look like, and how it can make us all feel like we're missing the mark. How Meredith and her partner were on the verge of splitting up. Not completely miserable, and they had their up moments, but there were a lot of down moments, and it was wearing on them. She knew that something needed to change. She was tired of trying to figure it out on her own by reading articles, asking friends for advice (who often ended up reinforcing the negativity), etc. They were having the same fights over and over. Budgeting and money. Misaligning over approaches to parenting. Arguments over where they should live. How as partners, we're supposed to fill each other up, not deplete each other. Remember you have choices (own your own choices). Just because you feel it doesn't make it true. You can always choose how you respond. Don't let your emotions rule you. You can take a break, clear your head, and come back with a fresh perspective. Stop saying yes to everything. Prioritize your time. It's ok to say no and spend more time with your family. Give yourself permission to say no, to have some downtime, to just be. Instead of shoving everything down, putting on the game face, dig in and investigate when you're feeling angry or stressed. Outsource/delegate to give you more time. Crystal clear communication (learn to really listen and not take what your spouse is saying personally). Think about what kind of memories you want your children to have of you, of their childhood. (what helped her decide to go through the course). Investing in the course is a no brainer. We all want our children to grow up to be amazing adults, and feel connected to us. The course not only helps you learn how to improve your relationship with your partner, but also helps you deal with other people. It doesn't take both parents. Change is possible even if only one partner is working on it.
