This week - I had a friend ask me about managing stress and key tools to help with things like low mood and depression. I loved this question for a few reasons. But how do you know if you're achieving them?” (02:01- 02:16)“The important thing about running a business or doing anything that you're going to improve is you need to be grounded in data because data removes all emotion.” (02:38 - 02:43)“We know that if it's green, we did a good job. If it's red, okay, we have an area of opportunity. And the reason I like that is because it adds meaning to those numbers. A number is just a number unless you say, okay, what does this mean? And if we see red this week, red next week, the third week in a row of hitting red - hold on, everyone needs to hit the pause button. If you've ever been in a bad meeting, it usually never started with data. It started with how I feel and somebody being angry and or it's a problem and you spend the whole time talking about the problem. The cool thing about having the scorecard is that everybody's been talking about data points. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Filip Winiewicz from Romero Hardwood HK Ltd. Living in various countries, including islands, Beijing, and Malaysia, Filip eventually landed in Hong Kong, where he got married to his Korean wife. Dissatisfied with the architectural work in Hong Kong, which he found lacking in the creative and hands-on aspects, Filip sought an alternative. Intrigued by woodworking as a smaller scale of architecture, he saw it as an opportunity to have more control over his ideas and faster results. Without any formal training, he relied on YouTube to acquire woodworking skills. Starting a woodworking venture in Hong Kong presented challenges, considering the exorbitant rent and tough market competition from China, the world's largest furniture manufacturing country, located just across the border. Listen now and get the whole story! “ My knowledge was like, mainly YouTube. And, and probably Hong Kong is the worst place to start woodworking but yeah, and it's hard to Okay, now we can call it business, but I just decided to do something I want to do.” - Filip Winiewicz Evolution of Projects: Starting with live-edge slab tables, Filip's business evolved from competing with China on slab tables to specializing in custom, high-end furniture for residential projects. He emphasizes the challenging nature of these projects, often involving intricate details and solid wood. Clients opt for Filip's craftsmanship, trusting his expertise over mass-produced alternatives from China. Steve: "Your work is truly remarkable, Filip. How did you navigate the initial stages of your business and establish your presence in such a competitive market?" Building Presence and Overcoming Challenges: Filip shares his early strategy of leveraging Instagram for marketing. Recognizing the rarity and appeal of wood products in Hong Kong, he strategically built a significant Instagram following by targeting potential customers interested in unique, high-quality furniture. This, coupled with a smart pricing approach, allowed him to gain a foothold in the market. Filip also emphasizes the challenges he faces, particularly in sourcing wood from China, where quality control is limited. The discrepancies in wood quality and the constraints of Hong Kong's small workshop spaces pose ongoing challenges. Steve: "It's fascinating to hear about your journey, Filip. As you've grown, what are the key tools and investments that have played a crucial role in your woodworking business?" Key Tools and Investments: While Filip's workshop may seem basic compared to American standards, he highlights essential tools like the Felder combination jointer and planer thicknesser as his significant investments. Acquiring a secondhand CNC machine at a bargain further expanded the business's capabilities, allowing for more intricate projects. Want to get in touch with Jesus Romero? In this MEGAphone episode we will be shouting out Stanford professor of neuroscience Andrew Huberman. We all have trillions of microorganisms living inside our gut—not just our stomach but our intestines and throat and mouth, and on our skin, in our eyes and nasal passages. There are living things, living on us… in ALMOST every imaginable place ON.. and IN our bodies. Maybe that sounds bad or gross, but… it turns out these microbiota are essential for our immune health, our brain health and our hormonal health—in part because they make chemicals that immediately impact how the rest of our body functions, including neurotransmitters like serotonin. The bottom line is: we need to nurture these living microbiota cargo to best support our mental and physical health. Today we're joined by Yunyao Li, a senior research manager at IBM Research. Yunyao is in a somewhat unique position at IBM, addressing the challenges of enterprise NLP in a traditional research environment, while also having customer engagement responsibilities. In our conversation with Yunyao, we explore the challenges associated with productizing NLP in the enterprise, and if she focuses on solving these problems independent of one another, or through a more unified approach. We then ground the conversation with real-world examples of these enterprise challenges, including enabling level document discovery at scale using combinations of techniques like deep neural networks and supervised and/or unsupervised learning, and entity extraction and semantic parsing to identify text. Finally, we talk through data augmentation in the context of NLP, and how we enable the humans in-the-loop to generate high-quality data. I welcome Matt Schembari, CEO of Lightforge Games. We begin by discussing his lifelong love of games and how he got his first job in the industry, followed by the other studios he's worked at. Our discussion pivots into burnout and the effects it has on a person, along with a crisis of identity, and thoughts on mental health. We then discuss the industry turnover rate and constant loss of talent that's happening, along with the key principles Lightforge Games has been founded on. Hear Matt's thoughts on empathic design, targeting tool development as a career choice, the importance of UI, and ideas around focusing your career. We then discuss the need to be a team player, mentoring others, and developing as a leader. Listen to the most important skill he thinks people should have and the importance of learning and developing. We then pivot into his experience working on StarCraft II and FortNite, including the development of crossplay, along with the rise of Twitch players. Hear about threats to the industry around big companies needing to get their shit together, the rise of startup studios working together and sharing ideas collectively, and the VC ecosystem. Listen to his excitement around AR and a funny story about a trip to Korea to promote StarCraft II. Towards the end we discuss thoughts about being all-remote, how the studio was founded on not asking people to move, and working asynchronously with employees in different parts of the world. We then wrap up talking about the importance of empathy and the belief in it creating better games. Bio: Matt Schembari has spent his career in the video games industry with a resume that spans both Blizzard Entertainment and Epic Games. He is currently the CEO of Lightforge Games. The Mom Sweat Sanity Podcast Episode 028. Featuring Meredith Dawson Show Notes Discovering Key Tools & Techniques to Thrive at Life with Thriving Life Collective's Meredith Dawson Episode 28: Show Notes. Shortly after Meredith Dawson became a mom, she also became a single mom. She realized that she desperately needed resources to deal with the stress, overwhelm, and trauma that she was faced with, and this led her to develop an entire tool kit of resources to help her cope and ultimately thrive. As a childhood educator and mother, Meredith felt compelled to be more than a teacher and left the classroom to have a greater impact on her community by using these tools to help support teachers and families. Today, she joins us to talk about her business the Thriving Life Collective and how she is equipping people with key tools and techniques through a range of wellbeing practices. Meredith explains the importance of breathwork to be able to process the emotional messages in our bodies and explains some of the other resources she utilizes, including essential oils, meditation and mindful movement. She educates us about tapping, a technique where you can stimulate a physiological effect on your nervous system by tapping on different pressure points in your body to reset your energy centre. For helpful tips on how you too can thrive physically and emotionally, tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: • An introduction to Meredith Dawson: mother, childhood educator, and well-being warrior. • How trying to deal with the stress, trauma, and overwhelm of becoming a single mother led Meredith to find resources to help. • How she uses the tool kit that she developed to help herself and others. • The importance of breathwork to be able to process the emotional messages in our body. • How Meredith left teaching in order to have a greater impact on her community. • Insight into her ‘back to breath' program and what it entails. • How COVID impacted her business and the need for support in schools. • An introduction to the tapping technique and its physiological effects on the nervous system. • A breakdown of where all the pressure points can be found in your body and what can be achieved by tapping on them. • Insight into her outdoor program and the importance of nature. • The importance of being able to identify stress and reset your energy centre to move forward. • How tapping when you talk through your vision can help make it a reality. • An overview of some of the different programs Meredith offers and what they entail. • Where you can find Meredith and her programs. • What Meredith's daily routine consists of. • Meredith's final thoughts: “What if everything within us was for us and it was the overflow that went to other people?” Tweetables: © 2021 Mom Sweat Sanity Podcast 1 TMSS 28 Show Notes “It's just led me down a path to creating this beautiful Thriving Life tool kit, to be able to share with others and to use myself, to use with my own family that really works.” — Meredith Dawson [0:03:26] “I like to say that I'm a mom and an educator and a well-being warrior, but really I'm just a human who's striving to thrive, like we all are, right?” — Meredith Dawson [0:03:36] It really, for me, comes back to that ability to connect with breath, because when we connect with our breath, we create space to be able to process emotions and process those emotional messages in our body that can really get mixed up in our heads.” — Meredith Dawson [0:05:50] “What if everything within us was for us, for our own well-being, and it was the overflow that went to other people?” — Meredith Dawson [0:28:47] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Thriving Life Collective Meredith Dawson on Instagram Britt Anderson Britt Anderson on Instagram © 2021 Mom Sweat Sanity Podcast 2

Tasha Eurich, Ph.D., is an Organisational Psychologist, researcher, and New York Times bestseller. She’s the author of two awesome books (Bankable Leadership and Insights) and her TED talks have been viewed in the tens of millions of times. So, I was thrilled when she agreed to be a guest on the show. It was without a doubt one of my favorite conversations I’ve had in this entire podcasting learning journey so far. The timing was perfect too as it aligns up excellently with the Me, mySELF, & EI series as we continue to deep dive into the area of Self-Awareness.The interview is absolutely packed with insights Tasha has discovered from her own career journey as well as from the research she’s done for her books and from her consulting and executive coaching practice that she’s been running for the last decade. I could have written a small book from the notes I took during the edit of this one but here are some of the key points & takeaways:•Earliest Memory from the age of 6 with her mother following her around and seeing how much of a positive impact business and leaders can make on the people's lives…•Having a very clear moment of discovering her life purpose – thinking of business psychology – moved to NY and took a small summer school course – the heavens opened up – knew straight away this was it!•The role of luck in success, with Hard work & paying attention!!•The power of paying attention •First book – Bankable Leadership from 2013 – codify what she learned about leadership! •Key learning - finding the tension between making people happy v driving results – most leaders had a preference oA cool parent leader oA trail of dead bodies leader oDoing dozens of research to see best leaders are good at both•3 steps to becoming a better leader?1.Knowing one's self2.Picking one thing3.Practicing every day!!•First Ted talk focused on this and the self-awareness piece emerged •The rise of Self-Awareness and why it’s become so important 1.Know thyself has been there forever – philosophy 2.Really on started in the last half of 1900 – but not good research is done on it•Business leaders started to look at self-awareness more in the last decade to deal with the speed of change •Leaders can’t rely on what got them where they are today •Why Tasha believes Self-Awareness is the Meta skill of the 21st Leader….•The deep focus on data and research •Ted Talk on Self-Awareness….1.What 2.Why3.How to get more of it!•2 Types of people – those who think they are v actually are?•The most surprising finding – survey 300 people…T=the more people reflect, the more self-aware they’d be? 1.In truth, it showed the exact opposite – less self-aware?•Question – is self-awareness actually good? •Introspection is not bad, it’s the HOW it’s done is the issue•95% of people believe they are self-aware, 10% are! •How can people start doing things differently? •Finding 50 people that didn’t start out as self-aware but improved self-awareness – what did they do?1.The Paradox that arose – feeling confident but also knowing more they could learn!2.Paradox – Confidence and Curiosity!•Self-compassionate curiosity – like exploring space…. there is always more to know•Key lesson – a braver but wiser mindset•Be open to recalibrating the mindset! •Don’t put pressure on yourself from 0 to 60 overnight•Everyday Insights to improve Self-Awareness is the key•What patterns were uncovered with the 50 people that were more self-aware?1.None based on demographics 2.A belief in seeing themselves clearly3.A commitment to improving themselves daily •Data showed – people who introspected were more stress and less happy / less control •The more you introspect, the greater the negative results.•When coaching a CEO – talk to 30 people that they are connected to – this is important to be all-rounded and learning about this person •Leaders now more than ever need to bring their whole self to the role •Example of a senior leader with family pictures visible •How to deal with the discomfort of bringing in the whole self…•The initial reaction of learning the truth doesn’t predict how successful we will be•The short fire walk leading to the puppies and rainbows•It’s all about making the small changes on a daily basis Key Tools:1.Have an internal understanding of who they are – internal self-awareness / Inside out…a.Thinking about yourself too deeply can lead us astrayb.Practice – a daily check-insAsk yourself 3 questions?•What went well today?•What did not go so well?•How can I be smarter tomorrow? From tools to the habits that Product Owners need to drop, in this episode, we explore practices and an anti-pattern that can derail the relationship between PO and team. Barbara Turley: Hey everyone and welcome to another episode of the Virtual Success Show. I'm joined by my co-host Matt Malouf as always. Hey Matt. Matt Malouf: Hey Barb. How are you? Barbara: I'm good. And you? Matt: I'm excellent. Yeah, I'm enjoying a sunny day here in Sydney after what's been a very, very wet sort of week down here. Barbara: Yes, unusually so for Sydney. But the Sydney sun is back, which is awesome. Matt: It is, it is. Barbara: Yeah. So we're back, guys, doing one of our interview series, which we love doing. We love when we find interesting business owners that are building virtual teams and can really add value to our listeners and to ask quite frankly about how they're doing things. So today's guest is someone who's become somewhat of a friend of mine, Meryl Johnston, and she is the founder and CEO of Bean Ninjas, which is a bookkeeping, financial reporting, and education business. She's also a chartered accountant. She's host up her own podcast, the Bean Ninjas podcast, which I definitely can recommend listening to. And she's also a big surfer living on the Gold Coast, the beautiful Gold Coast here in Australia. So welcome to the show Meryl. Meryl Johnson the founder and CEO of Bean Ninjas Meryl Johnston: Hi Barb. Hi Matt. Great to be here. Barbara: Good. So listen, why don't you just give us the quick rundown, Bean Ninjas. What is it? Why did you start it? Meryl: Well, Bean Ninjas is a bookkeeping and financial recording business, and before starting Bean Ninjas, I was running a consulting firm, not very cleverly named MCJ Consulting, my initials. And I was doing project accounting work and quite quickly found the business difficult to scale. It was hard from a cash flow perspective, with project work being lumpy, and it was difficult to build a team. And I looked at some other business models out there and the kind of business that I wanted to build, which was recurring revenue, it would have processes so I could scale the business and I wanted it to have global potential. And then I looked at my skill set, which is accounting and thought about how I could marry the two together, my skill set and the kind of business that I wanted. And that's where Bean Ninjas was born. I founded the business with a co-founder who had a similar vision of creating a global business and a business that we could run from anywhere in the world. So that was where it started.

Talking with Tech is joined this week by Julie Freed, an SLP and school-based AAC specialist who helped create the AAC Planning Tool (APT)! Before the interview, Rachel and Chris discuss two communication assessments, the Continuum of Language Expression (COLE) and the Dynamic AAC Goals Grid (DAGG-2). Chris discusses his role in the creation of the COLE, what they considered when making it, and how it can be helpful when assessing emergent communicators. Rachel follows this with a discussion of the DAGG-2 and how it is similar to, and different from, the Communication Matrix. Rachel and Chris also chat about out how these assessments can be used as a baseline to determine the effectiveness of AAC implementation and measure student progress. Next, Chris interviews Julie Freed, the Assistive Technology/AAC Resource Team Lead at Grant Wood Area Education Agency in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Julie is the co-creator of the APT, a “menu” of AAC assessment tools that helps to guide the dynamic assessment process. It provides key tools to use as part of this process, including communication sampling forms and communication partner worksheets, that are suggested based on the student’s symbolic communication ability. Julie shares about why the APT was formed, the advantages she has seen from using it, and how it has helped to increase AAC competency and interest for many teachers and staff in her area! Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
Understanding who you are, the way you work, and your beliefs are all key to finding the right career for you. Core competencies and skills are important, but truly understanding what lights you up, and what you love doing, can propel you into your next career. Career coach Kylie Butler says it can also be helpful to look into your limiting beliefs and what may be holding you back. Practical Steps to Understanding Yourself Take the time to ask yourself these personal profiling questions. What do I enjoy? When am I in ‘flow’? What were my unique gifts as a child? Do personality assessment tests. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. DiSC profile assessment. Review your CV or resume with someone you respect Consider what excuses you have been making around reaching your goals. But before you leap onto the job boards you should create and develop a success mindset. It can mean the difference in finding the right job for you and finding it quickly.
