In 2005 the Guinness Brewery at Park Royal, West London closed after seven decades of production. Tim Strangleman spent the last six months of the Brewery's life working with a photographer to record in words and picture the site before it closed. Subsequent research revealed an incredibly rich story of corporate cultural change and the transformation of work and the workplace. Drawing on material from his 2019 book, Voices of Guinness: An Oral History of the Park Royal Brewery, Strangleman, Professor of Sociology, in the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research, University of Kent, Canterbury, reflects on what that story tells us about work meaning, identity and organizational life in the second decade of the twenty-first century. Our show is excerpted from Strangleman's Zoom presentation at the October 5 edition of Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives, the lecture series sponsored by the Michigan Traditional Arts Program and the Labor Education Program at Michigan State University. We're talking about the burgeoning opportunities for new and established collectors of beautiful rare objects, looking forward to London Craft Week, with Guy Salter, the fair's founder.   Now in its ninth year and dubbed ‘the most luxurious craft fair in the world', the fair spreads right across the capital, incorporating Acton and Park Royal as Creative Enterprise Zones for the first time. There will be exciting events and exhibitions celebrating the Coronation and London Craft Week will also showcase the work of over 700 artists, designers and makers from across the world and include four international pavilions from Austria, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan.   We also talk to Nazy Vassegh, founder of the boutique art platform Eye of the Collector.  The third edition of The Eye of the Collector fair is running between 17th and 20th May at Two Temple Place, the majestic 1892 Neo-Gothic building, commissioned by William Waldorf Astor, on London's Strand.  Of the 120 works for sale, many will be of museum quality or by huge names including Frank Auerbach, Barbara Hepworth and Bridget Riley but will there will also be 60 new works, aiming to shine a light on emerging artists and designers and overlooked talent.  Our third guest is celebrated couturier and interior designer Tomasz Starzewski, who's now collaborating with the specialist ceramics and craft auctioneers Maak to curate an installation of exquisite pieces from the collection of the late Victoria Lady de Rothschild. The installation is now open in Buckinghamshire, at Ascott House, the home Lady de Rothschild shared for over a decade with her husband Sir Evelyn.  Victoria Lady de Rothschild designed Ascott House, alongside Renzo Mongiardino and it's now the beautiful setting for 118 carefully chosen and placed objects that she collected on her travels for over 20 years.  They will be displayed throughout the house until September when Maak will auction them. Mungi is the grand-daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, anti-apartheid and Human Rights Activist who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his efforts in resolving and ending apartheid in South Africa. In this exchange Mungi and I spoke about grief, because she lost her grandfather earlier this year. Grief is a topic we often leave out when it's time to speak about mental health or wellness, and it is something we all experience - whether it's caused by the loss of a loved one, or the grief we feel when something ends or is taken away in our lives. This week, host Eva Hartling speaks with Monica Ruffo, founder of Well Told Health. A serial entrepreneur with passion for health and wellness, Monica enjoyed a prolific career in the advertising agency world when she received a diagnosis of aggressive breast cancer. Throughout her 18 months of cancer treatment, she put her passion for health and wellness to work on herself, researching every aspect of her lifestyle and treatment options and advocating strongly for both traditional and natural treatments. As a result, she fared extremely well both during and after cancer treatment, and uncovered what she felt was a huge gap in the market. The more digging she did, the more she realized that most “natural health” products are not natural at all. As she continued her quest to better understand natural health products, she successfully completed a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University and decided to found Well Told Health.Whether wellness means sports, rest, mental health or all of the above to you, we're thrilled to partner with Athleta, a purpose-driven brand whose mission is to ignite the limitless potential of women and girls and is designed for women by women. Dhali says the NHL blocked it. Rolled through the JR timeline. Talked about the search for the GM. Everything he has been told is that they are going out on a search. Says that it’s a good thing that JR didn’t come in and just clean house and that it came from the Canucks organization before Rutherford speaks for the first time. Talked about Chris Gear. Some agents really like dealing with him, some really don’t. Doesn’t think there will be any scout changes with them already working on the draft. They are just looking at everything, top to bottom. It’s been 8 bad years. JR will be in town this weekend and Rick thinks he will have a really good sit down with the Sedin twins and Smyl. They would be on quite the little heater if they can get the win vs WPG. Talked bout Boeser. Alex Edler of the LA Kings joined Matt and Blake. Talked about new adapting to life in LA. Not sure where he will end up. He is from Sweden and his wife grew up in Vancouver. Talked about 100 goals. The number doesn’t really mean that much but it’s cool to have that number. Took forever from 99 to 100. Talked about what means more, a goal or a stop, as a defender. Anything that helps the team win is a rush. Talked about how the year has gone and contending for a playoff spot. Talked about the rivalry with the Kings as a Canuck. Said the core welcomed him in. Talked about coming back to Vancouver in a Kings uniform. Said it was a bit weird being on the other side. Was exciting to come back to the building with mixed feelings. It was a really nice moment to see the video and hear the fans. That’s what made him emotional at the time. Talked about how proud he is of his time in Vancouver. The fact that he is leading in all categories is because of how long he was here. If Quinn plays here for a few more years, he will break all the records. Talked about his overall health. Taking it one year at a time but this year his body is feeling great. Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot. Talked about the terminations of Chris Gear and Jon Wall. Talked about how that flew in the face of what he said on Monday morning. Doesn’t like the looks of Stan Smyl having his name, with no title, on the press release. Talked about the job that those guys did for the team. Gregg Bell joined the show to preview Seahawks in Houston. Started off, though, by chatting about the big Army v Navy game. Upset he will be in Houston instead of where the game actually is. Hoping the game gets back to the Rose Bowl. Talked about Adams being out. Carroll will tell you that the leadership is worth it along. Forget about the 2 first rounders he cost and the millions he is being paid. The kicker from all of this is that his big contract hasn’t kicked in yet. They are hoping he will be back for the first game next year. He has played through this before but they were playoff bound last year. At 4-8, it’s a pull the plug and get it done situation now. Talked about what a loss to HOU means to the franchise. They should handle this team with a 3rd string QB. Combine this with other games coming up, if they lose those than they will have problems. Wonders what kind of noise RW3 will be making in the offseason if they come off a worse season. Talked about Adrian Peterson. Says he really is a Hawks RB now that he is injured. Talked about West Point slang. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Says that it's a good thing that JR didn't come in and just clean house and that it came from the Canucks organization before Rutherford speaks for the first time. Talked about Chris Gear. Some agents really like dealing with him, some really don't. Doesn't think there will be any scout changes with them already working on the draft. They are just looking at everything, top to bottom. It's been 8 bad years. The number doesn't really mean that much but it's cool to have that number. That's what made him emotional at the time. Doesn't like the looks of Stan Smyl having his name, with no title, on the press release. The kicker from all of this is that his big contract hasn't kicked in yet. They are hoping he will be back for the first game next year. He has played through this before but they were playoff bound last year. At 4-8, it's a pull the plug and get it done situation now.

Rising Up to the Challenge – British Pacific Properties and Beedie Living

With a wealth of history behind them, British Pacific Properties is looking to develop a different kind of future. Now, in a new partnership with Beedie Living, these community builders are proposing some innovative ideas to rise to the challenge while addressing a potential uprising against traffic, the environment and sustainable housing. An exclusive interview with president, and West Vancouver resident, Geoff Croll. The new Upland development, with Hawksley and Wildwood, how does partnering with Beedie affect this? Well, we have entitlements for over 800 homes in Rogers Creek. And if Cypress Village gets approved, they'll be another 3,500 new market homes in Cypress Village. And one of our guiding principles as a company is ‘be a small giant' - which means we focus on getting better rather than getting bigger. So how do we deliver all these homes in a timely fashion without getting bigger? We find someone to work with us. Someone who shares the same core values. Someone who has the same dedication to quality and customer service. Someone who shares our commitment to community - and someone who shares our vision for the future. And the people at Beedie checked all those boxes. We're pretty excited to supercharge our team. The vision is large. The time commitment is enormous. The kind of home we need is changing? What does all that say? We've always played the long game. We've been here since 1931. It's always been a steady, slow progression across the hillside. And we've evolved from the 30s and the 40s and 50s to where we are today. We're addressing the needs of the community. And we have to do it in a thoughtful step by step manner that we can create a community on the hillside that meets the needs of both the new residents and the community that's already here. If you go back to the company's guiding principles, the number one thing is reverence for nature. We have to respect and conserve the natural environment that we have. How do you respond to those who say it's going to make the mountainside too busy - or there's going to be too much traffic? When we did the Rogers Creek plan back in 2008, the number one concern was the environment. Now, 13 years later, it's traffic and housing affordability. Traffic is a major concern in West Vancouver - and so it should be. If you look at where West Vancouver sits, it's at the intersection of Hwy 1 and Hwy 99, and it also has a large ferry terminal that connects the Sunshine Coast to Vancouver Island. There's also a popular ski hill in the most visited provincial park in the province (Cypress Provincial Park). Over a million cars a year travel up and down Cypress Bowl Road - none of it by public transit. So anything we do at Cypress Village will pale in comparison to the existing and future traffic generated by [these roads]. There's a lot that we are committed to doing to reduce traffic. So first and foremost, we are creating a complete community where it is truly possible to live, work and play without getting into a car. The village will provide all the amenities and services people need on a daily basis. Secondly, we're also committed to a developer-funded transit system from day one (at no cost to the taxpayer). We'll provide regular, reliable service to Ambleside and Park Royal using electric buses (carbon-free). Thirdly, we're providing other transportation alternatives to the alternative single- occupancy cars, such as an integrated system of walking and biking paths. We'll also have electric car sharing.

Park Royal Proposal for New Micro-Unit Development

A podcast conversation with Park Royal VP Rick Amantea about the history of Park Royal and their new proposed micro-unit development. Affordable housing. It's a problem plaguing the Lower Mainland - and never more so than in West Vancouver, where mega-houses rule the land. Now, armed with a unique plan for the future, Park Royal VP Rick Amantea discusses how they are seeking approval for a new micro-unit complex designed specifically for singles. It strives to help solve the housing crisis with a tiny bit of innovation that still allows people to ‘live large'. UPDATE Oct 5, 2021 - Council approved the proposal to advance to the next steps of review and consultation. The next steps in the application process include community consultation and staff review to identify issues and technical considerations for the proponent to address.  Staff identified the following items that require further review: Traffic functionality, Number of parking stalls, Number and size of rental units, Potential community recreation uses in the current green space, Impacts to privacy and view corridors to properties north of the site. Q: Tell us a little about why you have proposed this new micro-unit development? A: As we continue to evolve, and we look at the needs of the community, we try to examine developments and bring to the table ideas and concepts that kind of meet those needs. One of those needs is to provide housing for those individuals who work in our community and do the important work of those services and those frontline jobs. And so when we were thinking about what we could do to address that, the notion of micro-units came up. We decided to try to bring something like that to West Vancouver to make it more affordable, make it more attainable, and really provide an opportunity for those people - those important people who work in our community. Q: Who would want to live here? A: The occupants are, generally speaking, those single people that want to find a more affordable means and ways of living in the community, which generally means they don't have a car. They rely on walking or cycling, or public transportation to get to and from their place of work. As such, we've designed the building for 0.25 cars per unit, and lots of bicycle parking. Q: What is the approval process for this? A: The first step is to have council consider this concept - so we need to go through a pre- application proposal. We will then go into a much more intense public consultation. We would then take it forward to the community and see what they think - and then they'll consider it at that stage of the game for the rezoning and the development permit that would be required. Q: In addition to the micro-units, what else is going to be unique about the property? A: There are a couple of unique things that we're proposing. One is that the six-storey building would be built all from wood frame. So that is a more environmentally sensitive means of construction. All 199 [units] will be rental units. We'll have a rooftop garden on top of the building with a little amenity space up there that could be converted into a community dining room. There will be a collaborative workspace. And [instead] of an indoor fitness amenity, we have proposed putting outdoor adult exercise equipment on the front lawn of the building. So those people who want to get exercise can do it literally on the front lawn. Q: How much will each unit cost per month? A: I think the goal here is is is to bring a compact, high quality living accommodation to this community that would be about 2/3 the size of a studio or a one-bedroom - and by virtue of that, the rent should be two thirds. So if your average rent for a one-bedroom unit is $1,800 a month, you'd be looking at $1,200 a month. That's just simple math. The new proposed six-storey building located just off of Taylor Way will house 199 rental micro-units of approx.

New Zealand health officials are in close contact with their Australian counterparts after a second positive case of Covid-19 in Sydney in the past 24 hours.Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said decisions on what steps were needed were being discussed this afternoon."The advice that I had earlier today was that there could be a likely source of transmission, which again, required further investigation."We're in close contact with Australian health officials."He said they were having conversations this afternoon about 2.30pm."We will then know a bit more about what the Australians know and obviously make decisions where we need to."He noted the Northland case earlier this year where there was no lockdown."We're treating cases in Australia the same as we would here ... We are ready to move quickly if we need to."Hipkins added that if there was a pause, it likely wouldn't take effect until tomorrow just because of the logistics of the flights timetable. The latest developments come after New South Wales recorded its second case of Covid today, a day it was revealed a man in his 50s from Sydney's eastern suburbs had returned a positive result. The new case, a woman in her 50s, is the man's household contact. It's believed neither the man nor woman had recently travelled overseas, worked in a hotel quarantine, border or health role, or come into contact with someone who did.NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said officials had managed to trace the source of the man's infection to a case acquired overseas but there are concerns about a missing link.It matched a traveller who arrived from the United States and stayed at the Park Royal at Darling Harbour before being moved into a quarantine facility on April 28.Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said earlier today that preparing for "scenarios like these" was all part of having the bubble. She said the traveller from the US was still in quarantine. She added she was happy with how quickly New Zealand was informed of the NSW case and the level of engagement with NSW health officials."So far, that information sharing has been very good."Hipkins said sometimes getting more information makes the decision - whatever it ends up being - more understandable."When you think about the lead times involved in [pausing flights], you want to make sure you're making decisions that are going to stick - rather than say you're going to pause travel and then a few hours later saying you don't need to anymore."The risk is still very low. That doesn't mean there's no risk."The Ministry of Health said today New Zealand officials were in contact with their Australian counterparts following the confirmation of a positive case of Covid-19 in the community in Sydney.A list of locations of interest had been released by New South Wales health and has been published on its website. Those in Australia who were at a location of interest at the specified times were asked to follow New South Wales health advice regarding isolation and testing, and should not travel to New Zealand.New Zealand health ministry officials had requested airlines communicate this message to anyone before flying to New Zealand from New South Wales.- words by Derek Cheng, NZ Herald

Show #830   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 5th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   IONITY CELEBRATES 250TH FAST-CHARGING STATION IN EUROPE "IONITY, the European fast-charging network, founded in 2017 by BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen Group with Porsche AG, and joined by Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai and Kia) in 2019, celebrates its 250th charging location." says InsideEVs: "The company announced the news on July 3, 2020, about six months since the milestone of 200 stations. The pace of new installations was probably significantly lowered by the COVID-19 lockdown, so we are wondering whether the target of 400 locations by the end of 2020 is still the case. IONITY's website shows that there are 251 stations installed, while another 49 are under construction. Most of the chargers are supplied by Tritium (55%: 569 chargers at 139 stations), followed by ABB (41%: 424 chargers at 108 stations) plus 5 stations with a total of 28 Porsche Engineering chargers."   https://insideevs.com/news/432240/ionity-250-fast-charging-station-europe/   TESLA INSTALLS 500TH SUPERCHARGER IN UK & IRELAND "Tesla continues to expand its electric vehicle charging network around the world, following the announcement of its CEO Elon Musk. To meet growing demand, 500 Supercharger devices have now been installed in the UK and Ireland. The first Superchargers appeared in the UK in 2014 and are now available in 63 locations. Tesla has already installed 42 new Superchargers this year, which confirms the company's intention to expand globally." reports Tesmanian: "Previously, the company’s Supercharger Network expansion has slowed down to allow for the ramp in the production of Supercharger V3 units. V3 Supercharging uses the same principle as Tesla’s current Superchargers but adds a 1MW power cabinet to the equation. That means 250kW peak charging rates per car. To date, eight V3 Superchargers have been installed in the UK - all at the brand’s Park Royal service center in London. Model 3 is compatible with the device as standard, and models S and X come with an adapter that allows them to use the same system."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-installs-500th-supercharger-in-uk-ireland   TESLA UPDATES WARRANTY ON PROBLEMATIC MEDIA UNIT AND TOUCHSCREEN "Tesla has updated its warranty for its already problematic media unit and touchscreen with a ridiculously shorter two-year or 25,000-mile limit." is the wording of electrek today: "As we previously reported, Tesla had a problem with the embedded Multi-Media-Card memory (eMMC) in its original MCU (the central media unit with a touchscreen). It is being overwritten to the point of failure, and many early Tesla owners are having to replace it. This week, Tesla updated the warranty on replacement MCUs and slashed the length of coverage in half."   https://electrek.co/2020/07/04/tesla-updates-warranty-problema   BUICK TO INTRODUCE VELITE 6 PHEV IN CHINATIC-MEDIA-UNIT-TOUCHSCREEN/ "Buick is adding the VELITE 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to its new energy vehicle (NEV) portfolio in China. The model is expected to be launched this month. The VELITE 6 PHEV will be powered by Buick eMotion electric drive technology that leverages GM’s global electrification expertise." reports Green Car Congress. And don't get that confused with the Buick Velite 7 I've previously reported on: "Based on a variant of the BEV2 platform that the Chevrolet Bolt EV debuted in 2016, the brand-new Buick Velite 7 EV includes a state-of-the-art battery pack that will allow it to offer an electric range of up to 500 kilometers – equivalent to about 311 miles – with a full charge, calculated under the conditions of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). In China, this makes it the most efficient electric crossover in its class. Aesthetically, the Velite 7 EV boasts a relatively simple design with a distinctive front fascia, and might share a few body panels with the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The company has announced that the new high-performance lithium-ion modular battery that mounts the new Buick Velite 7 has a higher energy density, thanks to improved cell chemistry. Additionally, the battery pack has an advanced structural design and BMS thermal management system that meets GM’s global standards" as per GM Authority   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/07/20200704-buick.html   https://gmauthority.com/blog/2020/06/brand-new-buick-velite-7-ev-crossover-unveiled-in-china/   TESLA SUPERCHARGING USAGE HITS PRE-COVID 19 HIGHS @elonmusk: "North American Supercharger usage is now at pre-covid high, Europe about a week behind, China & Asia-Pacific in general doing great"   TEPCO TO REUSE CHINESE EV BATTERIES FOR ENERGY STORAGE "Japanese utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. Holdings will launch a storage battery business utilizing used electric-vehicle batteries from China, Nikkei has learned. The plan is to assemble used batteries into a containerized energy storage system to assist renewable-energy plants" writes Nikkei Asian Review: "Transmission and distribution unit Tepco Power Grid will purchase used EV batteries from trading companies in China and elsewhere, combining 20 to 30 vehicles' worth of them into a container-type battery. The batteries will then be sold to solar and other renewable-energy plants for 30% to 50% less than new batteries. Tepco hopes to grow the business into a new revenue stream. EV batteries are generally replaced after seven to 10 years, but the used batteries still have about 70% of their original capacity"   https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Energy/Tepco-to-reuse-Chinese-EV-batteries-for-energy-storage   AUDI, ENBW TO TURN ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES INTO GRID SUPPORT TOOLS "Audi and utility EnBW are setting up an electric car battery operation at EnBW's Heilbronn plant to build scaleable storage facilities by the end of this year, drawing on retired batteries to help power grids." according to Car and Bike.com: "Electric vehicle battery recycling and reuse has become a priority for car and battery makers while renewable energy companies face the problem of how to absorb surpluses of wind and solar power to avoid waste and disruption to the stability of grids, slowing the transition to purely carbon-free energy system. Audi has been testing the behaviour of electric car batteries, which represent a third of an EV's unit costs, in a research setting in Berlin for three years. The batteries to be used for the commercial phase of the project come from test cars, which have run hundreds of thousands of kilometres, Kupfer said. "A used EV battery still can function for another three to 10 years," he said."   https://www.carandbike.com/news/audi-enbw-to-turn-electric-car-batteries-into-grid-support-tools-2257009   ELECTRIC CAR SCRAPPAGE SCHEME REJECTED BY GOVERNMENT MINISTERS "Hopes of a new scrappage scheme reportedly offering up to £6,000 towards the cost of an electric car have been dashed now that the government appears to have rejected the idea." says the RAC: "The Times reports that a letter from Rachel Maclean, junior minister for transport and the environment, reads: “the government has no plans at this stage to introduce a scrappage scheme.” A similar scrappage scheme was dismissed in 2018 as ministers believed it was “difficult to deliver [and] potentially open to abuse.” At present, the government provides a grant of up to £3,000 only towards the purchase of plug-in cars, although this was cut by £500 in March."   https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/electric-car-scrappage-scheme-rejected-by-government-ministers/   [mention for Premium Partners]   You can listen to all 829 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRIGHTSMITHGROUP.COM – FOR CLEANTECH TALENT (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NEW! Though the members have all been involved in a variety of projects through the years, Bad Cop/Bad Cop seems like a case of the right band with the right people happening at the right time in life. The Fat Wreck Chords foursome just finished headlining a European tour and they're currently wrapping up a U.S. and Canada jaunt before heading back to California to continue their quest for world domination one great album at a time. Before Bad Cop/Bad Cop's recent concert at X-Ray Arcade in Cudahy, two of the band's members invited My First Band host Tyler Maas up to the club's green room to discuss everything that preceded this project. While their tourmates in War On Women finished up their soundcheck, Jennie Cotterill and Stacey Dee — both singers and guitarists — talked about what led them to their eventual decisions to take up music. Cotterill talked about growing up in the Midwest before moving to California after high school and eventually pursuing a career in art that's included work on Parks & Recreation and Metalocalypse. Meanwhile, Dee spoke about taking up guitar and making a name for herself in Angry Amputees (as featured on Tony Hawk's Underground), Compton SF and playing in a short-lived band called Park Royal during her stint in London. Both members also talked about how much Bad Cop/Bad Cop means to them and what the band is working on at the moment. Oh, and stick around for a quick cameo from some War On Women members at the end of the episode. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts.
