Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 1st January. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Audi Q6 E-Tron Following up the e-tron GT will be the Q6 e-tron. PPE platform the same as Porsche Macan, it's sister/cousin car. BMW i4 the i4 is decidedly mainstream in appearance and specification. The BMW i4 will have two versions available—The eDrive40 will have 335-horsepower and rear-wheel drive, with estimated to have a range of 300 miles from an 80.0-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack. The all-wheel-drive M50 with a maximum of 536-horsepower is the performance version with a zero to 60-mph acceleration in under 4 seconds and a lower range of 245 miles. The price will be around $55,000. £74,845 if you spec it properly for the M50 with the 20” Bicolour Jet Black double-spokes, and BMW blue metallic paint - BMW iX1 With the i3 not getting an immediate replacement, the iX1 will become BMW's entry-level electric car when it arrives in 2022. Essentially an electric version of the X1, in the same way the iX3 (shown above) is an electrified X3, the new car is expected to be offered with battery size options of 38 and 74kWh, producing a respective range of approximately 120 and 240 miles. Original Source : https://www.t3.com/features/17-top-evs-to-get-excited-about-in-2022 - BMW iX xDrive50 - The iX is coming with dual-motor AWD, 516 HP, 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds and over 300 miles of range. BMW have shared a lot of charge curve charts and it can add 90 miles of range in just ten minutes at over 200kW charge speed. - BMW iX M60 Whilst some countries don't have the iX yet, there's already a spicy version on the way. The M version will have uprated suspension, less weight, possibly carbon ceramic brakes and aero tweaks Production will start in March, expect 600 hp and 4 seconds to 60 mph. - Bollinger B1 - It's boxy, it's unique, and you can remove parts of it to turn it from a cab truck to an SUV. There's a huge 142-kWh battery which somehow only does 200 miles but the performance from the dual motors is strong at 614 hp. - Citroen Ami - This will arrive in the UK in spring, tops out at 28 mph and had 42 miles of range and yet it already has a small army of fans. But will they part with £6,000 for a 2 seat city car. Expect the cargo version to follow later in the year, and possibly a subscription option too like France. - Cupra Born - We've already reviewed the Cupra Born ahead of its arrival early next year and we were impressed by the looks, the battery range, the finish and the chassis set-up. It's let down somewhat by a below-par infotainment system, the fact that maximum power is only available for 30 seconds at a time and that, so far, it's only available in rear-wheel drive. -The Born will come with 45kWh, 58kWh and 77kWh battery options, giving a maximum range of 335 miles in the top-of-the-line versions. · Original Source : https://www.investors.com/news/10-hottest-electric-cars-trucks-suvs-of-2022/ - Fisker Ocean - 17.1-inch infotainment display is a point of difference, as it can rotate from landscape to portrait, and we love the styling. As for specs, expecting 18 minute 80% charge on a 350kW HPC. They promise "vehicle to load" as the new Hyundai group cars do. - Ford F-150 Lightning - “563 hp and 775 pound-feet of torque are provided by dual electric motors. Two battery options offer 230 miles of range from the standard pack and 300 miles for the Extended Range model. You also get a huge “frunk” (front trunk), thanks to the lack of an engine, the ability to tow up to 10,000 lbs, and the Pro Power Onboard system, which provides up to 9.6 kW of power for all manner of tools, electronics, microwave ovens, and other appliances via 11 outlets spread across the cab, bed, and front boot.” · Original Source : https://www.wired.co.uk/article/18-best-evs-coming-in-2022 - Genesis GV60 - The third car to roll out on the e-gmp platform, this will be up again the Audi e-tron, BMW iX3 and iX, I-PACE, Merc EQC and VW ID.5. Cameras for mirrors work well, the large 77.4-kWh battery, RWD spec gets 228-hp 280 miles. But get the performance version for sub-4 second 0-60 times. - Genesis Electrified G80 As the name suggests, this is a battery-powered version of the G80, which comes from Genesis, a new luxury brand from the Hyundai Motor Group. Visually almost identical to a petrol-powered G80 that launched in 2020, the electric model has a claimed range of over 300 miles and an 800-volt system architecture that enables super-fast charging of up to 350kW. Original Source : https://www.t3.com/features/17-top-evs-to-get-excited-about-in-2022 - GMC Hummer EV - Triple motors, 1,000hp, 200kWh pack and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Also, WTF mode hits 60 mph in three seconds. Due to that huge pack the range will be 350 miles per charge, and on a 350kW HOC expect to add 100 miles in 10 minutes. - Hyundai Ioniq 6 - Lucid Air - A bit of a cheat here because the Air Dream Edition is already on sale and in customers hands, but that's really only the first 520 buyers paying $169,000. - Next up we'll get the more affordable trim level and for me that's the real start of Lucid. - Lotus Evija - “The first British all-electric hypercar sports a preposterous quad-motor powertrain (two per axle) that outputs some 2,000 hp—yes, two thousand—and can go from standstill to 186 mph in under nine seconds. That's five seconds quicker than a Bugatti Chiron. 215 miles on a single charge. The cost of such performance is £2 million, and only 130 cars will be made. Rivian R1S The seven-seat SUV sibling to the R1T starts at $70,000. Four motors (one on each wheel) provide a combined 750 hp from the electric drivetrain, while drivers can enjoy supercar-like speeds of 0-60 times in three seconds and an estimated 316 miles range - Maserati MC20 - All we know at this stage is the car will come in 2022 and be a proper Maserati supercar, so in excess of 700 hp and enough to put the fossil versions of their cars to shame. Tri motors, with two on the rear and using the front for more performance. Do you need to do 60mph in 2 seconds? Probably not but that's what they're promising. - Mercedes-Benz EQE - The Mercedes EQE will be to the E-Class what the EQS is to the S-Class — a high-tech, aerodynamic electric equivalent with a class-leading battery range. A large 90kWh battery should give the EQE a range of over 400 miles between charges. Along with its approximate price-point of £60,000 will make it a strong and direct rival for the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4 Original Source : https://www.driving.co.uk/news/new-cars/nine-of-the-most-exciting-new-cars-arriving-in-2022/ - NIO ET5 - In 2022, this electric vehicle will join the previously announced ET7 as a second sedan offering from NIO. NIO promises 1,000 km (~621 mi) of (CLTC) range. Other features include LiDAR technology to support NIO Autonomous Driving (NAD), NIO Aquila Super Sensing, and NIO Adam Super Computing, allowing the new EV to gradually achieve safe autonomous driving in scenarios such as highways, urban areas, parking, and battery swaps. - Nissan Ariya Nissan's second electric car, and to be the flagship of the range, the Ariya is due out in 2022. Up to 310 miles of range is on offer, while a performance model will produce 389bhp. The Ariya will go up against the Volkswagen ID.4 and prices are to start from just under £42,000. - Battery capacity options include 63kWh and 87kWh Original Source : https://www.t3.com/features/17-top-evs-to-get-excited-about-in-2022 - Ora Cat The Ora Cat from China is tipped to be one of the cheapest electric cars of 2022 (Citroen Ami notwithstanding). A compact hatchback, the Cat is to be priced from just £25,000 in the UK, yet promises an impressive range of 209 – or around double that of the similarly priced Mazda MX-30, or the pricier Honda e and Mini E. - A £28,000 version of the Ora Cat, equipped with a larger 63kWh battery, promises 261 miles of range. Both cars can charge at up to 80kW Original Source : https://www.t3.com/features/17-top-evs-to-get-excited-about-in-2022 - Polestar 3 - Expect this SUV to be priced around Porsche Cayenne levels at $75,000. This will share parts with the Volvo XC90 all electric, rumoured to be called Embla. We're thinking range just under 400 miles and 20 minutes for 80% full charge. Porsche Macan EV As mentioned with the Audi Q6 e-tron this will be on the PPE platform, but expect more sports performance and tuning. Plus will sell better than a Taycan. - Renault Megane E-Tech - Tesla Cybertruck - When will this arrive? Some say it's weeks away from test builds in Austin, some say none will appear in 2022. It's certainly a new production ramp for the stainless steel. - Pricing has now disappeared from the website so good luck with that $39,900 price. They still say it can tow 14,000 lbs and will go up to 500 miles with a sub 3 seconds 0-60mph. Don't write off Tesla, but equally, don't expect anything soon. It's all about their custom made 4680 cells. - Volkswagen ID.5 Following on from the ID.3 and ID.4, Volkswagen's third purpose-built electric car will land in 2022. The ID.5 is VW's largest EV to date, taking on a family-friendly, mid-size SUV form and to be priced from around £47,000. A 77kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of up to 323 miles, while a maximum charge rate of 135kW will see a charge to 80 percent completed in under 30 minutes. AUDI E-TRON GT RS IS TAYCAN COPY/RIVAL "The Audi e-tron GT and e-tron GT RS will be revealed simultaneously next year to rival the Porsche Taycan Turbo. Audi has let more info slip about what to expect when that time does eventually arrive. First, there will be a two-pronged approach to the new e-tron GT’s reveal, with both ‘standard’ and e-tron GT RS models due to be shown off simultaneously in a similar fashion to Porsche’s Taycan Turbo and Turbo S. As has already been established, the two will share more than just a launch strategy with the Taycan, as underneath the two cars are very similar, sharing a fundamental J1 platform" writes evo.co.uk: "The car is being developed by Audi Sport, and an engineer told evo that, just like Porsche, it was ‘focusing on the reproducibility of performance’. Double wishbone suspension, electric torque vectoring, rear-wheel steering and a very low centre of gravity (especially for a four-seater), the GT should handle as well as the Porsche Taycan it’s based on. Another aspect Audi is keen to reinforce is substantial progress in combating range anxiety: the e-tron GT will have a range of nearly 250 miles from its 90kWh battery pack, the minimum range the firm believes is acceptable to its customers. Moreover, if you can find a charging point compatible with its 800v charging system it’s possible to reach 80 per cent charge (200 miles) in around 20 minutes. There will also be a wireless charging setup that works with an inductive pad installed in an owner’s garage." https://www.evo.co.uk/audi/21992/audi-e-tron-gt-rs-to-join-standard-gt-new-details-of-audis-flagship-ev-revealed GERMANY’S LARGEST FAST CHARGING HUB Today, fast charging company Fastned, Tesla and Seed & Greet open Ladepark Kreuz Hilden, Germany’s largest fast charging hub. On site there is a café, a large Tesla Supercharger station and a large Fastned charging station. At the Fastned station 8 cars can charge simultaneously with up to 300 kW, allowing electric cars to add up to 300 km of range in just 15 minutes. The Fastned station is powered by energy from the sun and wind, generated partly by the station’s large solar roof. Ladepark Kreuz Hilden is right off the intersection between the motorways A3 and A46, close to Düsseldorf, Germany. Fastned has 8 fast charging stalls and Tesla’s Supercharger station has 20 Supercharging stalls, bringing the current total for the hub to 28 stalls. The Fastned station in Kreuz Hilden can easily be expanded with more fast chargers, so that in the future 22 cars can charge simultaneously at the station. Fastned has 125 fast charging stations in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium. https://fastnedcharging.com/hq/fastned-and-tesla-open-germanys-largest-fast-charging-hub/ NISSAN LEAFS ARE STILL THE MOST POPULAR USED ELECTRIC CAR "In 2020, the bargain-basement Leaf ($13,054 for the average used model) kept 28% of the US used EV market. Even in Tesla’s home state of California, the Leaf is outselling Tesla’s lineup." says Quartz: "Price is most people’s first consideration. The automotive research company iSeeCars analyzed over 54,000 used EV sales from 2019 to 2020. The Nissan Leaf remains the most popular used EV in 18 of the 25 states with the highest share of EV sales. That’s a function of both price and availability. Yet the volume of Tesla models now entering the market is likely to change the equation. It’s not much of an exaggeration to say America’s EV market belongs to Tesla. Nearly half of EVs sold in American since 2012 bear the Tesla logo." https://qz.com/1913991/used-nissan-leafs-are-selling-better-than-tesla/ MAZDA CONFIRMS MX-30 WILL GET A ROTARY ENGINE AS A RANGE EXTENDER "CEO Akira Marumoto confirmed that Mazda will use a rotary engine in the MX-30. Mazda plans to use the rotary as a range extender on the otherwise all-electric version of the MX-30. Marumoto said that it will begin testing with a small batch of prototypes next year. The goal is to have a production version of the MX-30 with a rotary engine on Japanese roads in 2022." says Autoblog: "Mazda says it’s going to be compact, have a high power output and be a smooth operator. Of course, those are all things we expect out of a rotary engine. An all-electric version of the MX-30 has been on sale in Europe for about a month now, too. There are still no official plans for Mazda to unleash the MX-30 on the American public, and even if it did, there’s no guarantee that we’d get one with a rotary range extender." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/08/mazda-mx-30-rotary-range-extender-confirmed/ TESLA GIGAFACTORY TEXAS TO INCLUDE BATTERY CELL PRODUCTION "Recent filings to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TECQ) have hinted at something quite interesting about Tesla’s plans for Gigafactory Texas. Based on the documents, Tesla will not only be producing electric vehicles in the massive complex; it will also be operating a “cell-manufacturing unit” that will build battery packs for the company’s industry-leading EVs. " according to Teslarati: "As noted in a report from the Austin Business Journal, the filing itself did not specify if Tesla will be manufacturing its battery cells at the original 2,100-acre Gigafactory Texas complex, or at the nearby 381-acre site that the company recently acquired. That said, the Journal’s sources have pointed to Tesla mining lithium at an Austin site, despite the activity not being mentioned in the TECQ filings. Gigafactory Texas is Tesla’s most ambitious vehicle production facility yet, with the factory being tasked to build key products like the Cybertruck and the Semi." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafcatory-texas-battery-cell-production-filings/ First Tesla Megapacks deployed at world’s largest battery project with PG&E "The first Tesla Megapacks have been deployed at what should become the world’s largest battery project with PG&E in California. In February, the project was officially approved and they started construction on the first phase of the project in July. Now PG&E confirmed that the first Megapacks have been deployed" says electrek: "The project will consists of 256 Tesla Megapack battery units. The energy capacity is going to be used to replace peaker plants and it is expected to save the electric utility over $100 million". https://electrek.co/2020/10/08/tesla-megapacks-worlds-largest-battery-project-pge/ 2 CONTRACTORS CHOSEN FOR TESLA'S $1.1B TEXAS FACTORY PROJECT "Accelerating its plans for a $1.1 billion Cybertruck plant, Tesla recently purchased an additional 381 acres in Austin, Texas, next to its 2,100-acre site to expand the manufacturing project’s footprint, according to the Austin American-Statesman." writes Construction Dive: "While no contractors have been officially announced for the project, Tesla procurement manager Jessica Munoz told the Community Impact Newspaper that two general contractors have been selected but not yet named. The firm also is looking for subcontractors for various jobs including site logistics, painting, flooring, fireproofing, interior finishing, plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical projects. Tesla reportedly wants to open the plant by May 1, 2021 and is believed to be pursuing additional land purchases in Southeast Austin, according to the American-Statesman." https://www.constructiondive.com/news/2-contractors-chosen-for-teslas-11b-texas-factory-project/586398/ DPD LAUNCHES GREEN DELIVERY SERVICE ACROSS THE UK "The parcel delivery firm, DPD, has announced its plan to deliver to 25 towns and cities across the UK with zero and low-emission delivery means by 2025. With an investment of more than €7 million, the new center will develop and test various energy systems for electric and hybrid vehicles." says Green Car COngress: "The future building, the construction of which will be completed in April 2021, will have an area of around 1,500 square meters and include different test spaces for the evaluation of cell modules with lithium-ion technology, medium- and high-voltage batteries, as well as different chargers used in the entire range of electrified vehicles." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/10/20201008-seat.html LIME ADDS WHEELS SHARED E-BIKES TO ITS APP "The next time you open Lime’s smartphone app, you may see a new type of vehicle that isn’t an electric scooter. The San Francisco-based company announced today that it is integrating Wheels, a shared electric bike startup, into its app so customers can rent an e-bike from Wheels as easily as they would a scooter from Lime." says The Verge: "Lime plans to add more shared mobility services to its app in the coming months as it seeks to become both a provider and platform for all two-wheeled electric transport. The “ultimate goal,” a spokesperson said, is to own “all light electric vehicle trips under 5 miles.” Wheels’ e-bikes will be available in Lime’s app starting this winter in four cities: Austin, Miami, Seattle, and Berlin. To rent a Wheels bike, Lime customers will scan the QR code on the handlebar, just as they would a scooter. Nearby vehicles will appear on the map along with pricing information automatically." https://www.theverge.com/2020/10/8/21506805/lime-wheels-app-integrate-scooter-bike-mobility You can listen to all 902 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. PORSCHE TAYCAN REVEALED In the words of company boss Oliver Blume the Porsche Taycan is the start of a new era. 2 motors – front and rear axle 93.4kWh battery 270 kW peak charge rate 265 kW regenerative braking capacity 761 horsepower 2-speed transmission All-wheel drive Top speed: 161mph 0-62mph: 2.8 seconds Range: Up to 257 miles Time to charger up to 80% capacity: 22.5 minutes Boot space: 447 litres (front 81 litres, rear 366 litres) up to 450 km (280 miles) (WLTP) "The Porsche Taycan is finally here, and the Turbo trim, which is the base model at launch, starts at $150,900 in the United States. Going for the more powerful Turbo S takes the price to $185,000. The online configurator for the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S are already available, and fully loading a Turbo S takes the price to $241,500." according to Motor1. Let's kick off with the Porsche presentation, 40 mins long but don't worry, this is everything you need to know without all the corportate publicity guff or frankly, the truly awful sound glitches and long periods of silences that showed up on the Youtube stream. [megacut] Let's start with an intro from Clint Simone at Motor1.com: [clip] The Verge says: "consider these important specs: the top-end version, the Taycan Turbo S, will have a 93kWh battery pack that gets a WLTP-estimated 450 km (~280 miles) of range. That’s about 40 miles more than the base Tesla Model S. The Taycan’s regenerative braking will feed energy back into the battery at rates of up to 265kW, which is very impressive. Of course, there was no mention of Dieselgate during the 40-plus-minute presentation. Porsche first unveiled the prototype Taycan, then called the Mission E, back in 2015, just a few days before the scandal broke. Since then, Volkswagen, Porsche’s parent company, has made a hard shift into electric vehicles, and the Taycan is the first major push into that new market." A very cool use of a spoiler which I hadn't read anything about in all the preview pieces: [top gear] Talking of stopping, Motor1 has this to say about brakes: "The Taycan's brakes are unlike any ever fitted to a Porsche. They could – and this isn't a joke or an exaggeration – last for 20 to 30 years. That's because the transmission, rather than the physical brakes, handle 90 percent of braking events. The front transmission can apply up to 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of recuperative torque, while the rear gearbox packs 406 lb-ft (550 Nm). Considering this, we’d argue the physical brakes, featuring dust-reducing tungsten-carbide surface coating, are a bit overkill. Up front, there are 10-piston monoblock calipers clamping down on 16.3-in (415-mm) rotors" Autogefuhl had a look at the app: [clip] And what about the platform which could be used for other VW group cars such as the Audi e-tron GT: "The Taycan arrives on a brand new fully-electric platform known as J1, and will be built in new facilities at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen home in Stuttgart. The battery uses lithium-ion pouch cells, arranged to allow a small well in the floor of the car for rear passenger foot room. The Taycan shares some of its suspension components with the Panamera, and also features four-wheel steering as standard. At low speeds, the rear axle will turn in the opposite direction to the front to promote low speed agility, while at pace they’ll turn together to aid stability. Three-chamber air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management is also included, enabling a softer setup for cruising, a harder setup for performance and track driving, and a lift function for additional ride height. " Edmunds has this to say about the two speed gearbox: [clip] As for the technicals, Autocar say: "Although the Taycan’s 90kWh battery pushes the car’s weight above 2.2 tonnes, the Taycan has the lowest centre of gravity of any Porsche on sale today – and close to the 918 Spyder’s – and weight distribution is a near ideal 49:51. Throttle response is five times quicker than on a combustion engined car, for instance, traction control 10 times faster and torque vectoring front to rear five times faster, while an electronic limited slip differential can respond to wheelslip 50 times faster than a mechanical set-up. Porsche Stability Management can be used, sit in a Sport mode that offers limited intervention or, crucially for enthusiasts, be switched off entirely. " In their conclusion, Autogeful noted Porsche's size and choice of interiors: [clip] Some extras not about the car but about ownership, from Motor1.com: "During the first three years of ownership, the first 30 minutes at Electrify America stations is free for Taycan drivers via the Porsche Charging Service. But while that gives you a place to charge, the Porsche Charging Planner is the real star. Working alongside the navigation system, the Charging Planner does a few key things. First, it looks at the route and plots the shortest, fastest path (we'd classify that as the minimum responsibility of a navigation system, after all) and then continuously monitors conditions along the way. If, though, the Charging Planner realizes the Taycan's battery is going to be a bit low – 13 percent or less – upon arrival, it factors in charge stops, reorienting the route based on where the battery will get the fastest recharge rate. A 50-kW DC charger might be right off the freeway exit, but if there's a 270-kW charger 10 minutes out of the way that will cut the charge time in half, Charge Planner takes that into account when plotting the journey. Once that's settled, the system will also precondition the battery to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, a temperature that allows the fastest of fast charges. With a route engaged, a journey timeline shows when and where to stop, and even how long to charge for." Now we've talked about the Taycan, let's look at the competition with Bloomberg: "Despite all its engineering muscle as the world’s largest automaker, VW has struggled to slow Tesla’s march. The debut of the e-Tron, a challenger to the Model X sport-utility vehicle, was marred by delays and a recall. Tesla chief Elon Musk has meanwhile stretched downmarket with the lower-priced Model 3, which started selling in Europe this year and is about to begin production in China. The technologically refined car will go head-to-head with Tesla’s aging Model S, after Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Audi opted for SUVs to kickstart their electric-car offerings. Tesla is facing concerns over whether it can deliver sustainable profits amid waning demand for its older models while sales rise for the cheaper Model 3." https://www.motor1.com/news/368730/2020-porsche-taycan-debut-official/ https://www.motor1.com/features/368891/2020-porsche-taycan-configurator/ https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche/taycan/92807/new-all-electric-2020-porsche-taycan-bolts-in-with-up-to-750bhp https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows/new-porsche-taycan-arrives-pivotal-electric-sports-car https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-04/porsche-unwraps-debut-e-car-in-backdrop-of-water-wind-and-fire?srnd=hyperdrive QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. TechCentral — In this episode of the Cars & Gadgets podcast, Duncan McLeod speaks to Nafisa Akabor about Jaguar's new I-Pace electric car, which has gone on sale in South Africa. Despite costing R1.7-million, the fully electric luxury SUV is already sold out, with new stock only expected next year. The car, which exudes luxury, is powered by a 90kWh lithium-ion battery that has a range of up to 470km from a single charge. But how practical is it to own one in South Africa? Nafisa took the I-Pace for a test drive and talks about the experience. She also explains how Jaguar is rolling out charging stations around the country to ensure drivers aren't left in the lurch, including on long journeys. Weekend Watch: Fully Charged V2G. On our trip around the Netherlands we stopped by the Engie head office outside Amsterdam to have a look at a functioning vehicle to grid (V2G) system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCYcsk40FLs Weekend Read: The Electric Car in America, 1890-1922 : A Social History. The electric vehicle seemed poised in 1900 to be a leader, even the dominant force, in the early American car market. They were clean, odorless, noiseless and they were mechanically simple, compared to their rivals. Yet just two decades later the electric car was dead. This book explores this early history of the electric car. Ready to pre-order now. https://books.telegraph.co.uk/Product/Kerry-Segrave/The-Electric-Car-in-America-1890-1922--A-Social-History/22854971 AUDI ANNOUNCES E-TRON CHARGING SERVICE "Audi announced the launch of the Audi e-tron Charging Service, which will offer more than 72,000 public charging points (about 80% of all public charging stations operated by 220 providers) in 16 countries in the European Union under one contract and one access card/app." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "We have mixed feelings about the offer, especially in Germany because the prices are per session instead for usage (but it could change over time). In other countries, there are fees per minute or per kWh." This is what Audi say: "To cover individual charging needs, the e-tron Charging Service offers two different tariffs. The “City” tariff is aimed primarily at urban commuters. It is available for a basic fee of €4.95 per month. For each charging process, customers then pay €7.95 for AC charging (up to 22 kW) and €9.95 for DC charging (up to 50 kW), regardless of the charging duration and how much energy is drawn. For drivers who regularly travel long-distance, Audi recommends the “Transit” tariff. This costs €17.95 per month, although a one-year waiver of the basic fee is granted for first-time Audi e-tron buyers. With the “Transit” tariff, customers benefit from better access conditions with HPC contract partners such as IONITY, higher charging capacities and shorter charging durations. The Audi e-tron is the first series-production model capable of charging with up to 150 kW at their HPC (high-power charging) stations. This means that the electric SUV is all set for the next long-distance stretch of a journey in approximately half an hour. And what’s more, the majority of electricity in IONITY’s network is generated from green sources.”" I saw first comments saying it was very expensive but remember that ~90kWh usable battery. On the DC fast charge deal, if you take 80kWh for 10Euros, that's still way cheaper than a tank of diesel. At a Supercharger that would cost 32 Euros. The IONITY deal is less attractive but it does incentivise long sessions, you're better off turning up with an empty battery. https://insideevs.com/audi-e-tron-charging-service/ NISSAN NV200 WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLY AS ELECTRIC It's not the prettiest EV on the road but not many vans ever win a beauty contest. "Nissan recently announced that it’ll discontinue the diesel version of the Nissan NV200 before the scheduled production stop that takes place in the summer. Therefore, in just a few months this van will be available only in its electric variant, the e-NV200." according to Pedro at Push EVs: "The electric van e-NV200, which is exclusively made at the Nissan Motor Ibérica plant in Barcelona got its production increased last year by 50 percent to 6.000 units. Currently the Nissan e-NV200 shares the same 40 kWh battery with the Nissan LEAF, it’ll be interesting to see if it’ll ever get the 62 kWh battery version and start selling in North America. On the Nissan USA website the Nissan e-NV200 is still listed as a future concept." https://pushevs.com/2019/02/01/nissan-nv200-will-be-available-only-as-electric/ CHINESE EV ON SALE IN UK BY AUTUMN "MG announced at its annual dealer’s conference in UK that its first all-electric car, the ZS EV, will be introduced in September 2019. Dealers also got an exclusive preview of the car" whilst all we have is a YouTube video in Chinese: "The company unveiled the eZS in China in 2018 and it seems that finally, British customers will get a chance to try an affordable (hopefully) EV from China (MG is part of Chinese SAIC). Range of the ZS EV stands at up to 286 miles (460 km) NEDC – about 220 miles (350 km) in the real world." Jon Timmis shared a YouTube video with me of the car, reviewed in England. At the time of recording this, it has been published 48 hours and had 25 views. It has a 44.5kWh battery. https://insideevs.com/mg-zs-ev-to-be-launched-in-uk-in-september-2019/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khwY3rAe3Ig TESLA BEGINS SALES OF CHEAPER MODEL 3 CAR VARIANT IN CHINA Tesla Inc said it will start taking orders in China on Friday for a lower-priced version of its Model 3 vehicle, whose price will start at 433,000 yuan (US$64,300.56). Chinese customers will be allowed to place orders for a long range, rear-wheel-drive Model 3 variant. Previously, the starting price for a Model 3 in China was 499,000 yuan, for an all-wheel-drive long range version. Tesla has sent two ships and at least one cargo plane with Model 3 vehicles to China, a logistics source familiar with the matter said." according to Channel News Asia. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/tesla-begins-sales-of-cheaper-model-3-car-variant-in-china-11194698 BYD KICKS OFF EUROPEAN ELECTRIC TRUCK CAMPAIGN IN SPAIN "BYD intends to be a major player in the market for heavy duty electric vehicles in Europe. It is already a leader in the production of electric buses on the Continent, with a factory in Allonne, France and second factory in Komarom, Hungary. Now it says it is ready to move into electric trucks." according to Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "According to Electrive, the three vehicles on display were the T6, a box truck with a weight rating of 7.5 tons, the Q1M yard tractor — a truck designed specifically for use by airports, seaports, and distribution centers — and the fully electric T3 commercial van. These are the first of a full range of electric light and heavy commercial vehicles that BYD plans to bring to market in Europe in the coming years." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/02/byd-kicks-off-european-electric-truck-campaign-in-spain/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 5th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. INSIDE EVS SCORECARD Steven Loveday starts to round up the North American sales: "If the trends persist, we should continue to see the final month of each quarter claiming the new lead spot on our all-time list, and June will likely prove this true." Topline number is at least 26,500. For Q2, GM sold 3,483 Bolt EVs and 4,336 Volts. Nissan delivered 1,367 LEAFs this June, down about 9% from last June and also down from May’s 1,576. Big questions remain like Tesla's 200,000 delivery. And how are the Model S and X selling? https://insideevs.com/june-2018-plug-in-electric-vehicle-sales-report-card/ AUDI E-TRON QUATTRO HIGH-TECH CABIN UNVEILED I've going to try and get through a piece talking about Audi's new e-tron Quattro without comparing it to the Jaguar I-PACE. So bear with me. Audi's new AWD EV is on the horizon, powered by 3 motors, a 95kWh battery pack delivering 250 silent miles on WLTP test cycle, with 150kW CCS fast charging to make use of the next gen chargers, the specs are certainly competitive and we know Audi make a fine car. 0-60 is under 6 seconds and top speed 124mph. But how much will it hurt with a launch date no sooner that a rather vague 'Spring 2019' given the I-PACE is out - DAMMIT. Sorry I won't do that again. As for price, it will start at $89,000, a $20,000 premium over the I-PACE - DAMMIT New interior photos have just been released and it's a stunning place to spend any time. There are two large centre touchscreens sitting just below the air vents. Of course the instrument panel behind the wheel is all digital too. Some journalists have been in the passenger seat, yesterday I was tweeting about CAR's review, and Auto Express have had a ridealong too: "On the move first thing you notice is the serenity on offer from its electric drivetrain; it’s much the same as we’ve experienced from its rivals. Although this early passenger ride was ostensibly to demonstrate the e-tron’s fine refinement and show us the new interior, we did manage to get the lowdown on the e-tron’s specification. Unlike its Mercedes-Benz EQ C rival, the e-tron will be built at a dedicated production line in Belgium, it riding on a unique, scalable platform, under which its 95kWh battery resides. Audi’s people admit that the platform is around 40 per cent stiffer than the Q5’s to allow for the e-tron’s weight, as well as help with its refinement and dynamic goals." The showstoppers are the side mirrors, of which there aren't any. Just two small aerodynamic stalks with HD cameras on them, called e-tron Virtual Side Mirrors. There are 7 inch OLED screens in the doors at the junction of the A-pillar so you just have to look slightly down from where you do for mirrors. Slashgear say: "However, because it’s all digital, Audi can switch up what’s shown depending on the situation. When you’re parking, for instance, the e-tron can show you a different view compared to when you’re on the highway. The upshot isn’t just aesthetic, though the electric SUV does look good without traditional mirrors. Audi claims the virtual mirrors help cut drag by between 2 and 7 percent, leaving the EV more aerodynamic as a result. That should pay dividends when it comes to range." "Scrubbing side mirrors can also pay visual dividends, too, and not just because the resulting body sides look sleeker. For its part, the e-Tron will still have a pair of small stanchions projecting out of its body sides to mount the rear-facing cameras, though they still should look much cleaner to the wind." reports CNET Sadly US regulations mandate that all cars have glass mirrors so only Europe and Asia get the sci fi cameras. However to make up for it, e-tron Quattro buyers can use Electrify America's high speed charging network with 290 locations installed by the end of next year. "Audi says that not only is the electric car’s drivetrain quieter than the typical gas or diesel engine, but it has packed the e-tron with even more noise insulation just to really deliver that cathedral-hush." say Slashgear on the subject of noise. Or lack of it. As for regen, as everyone loves a bit of regen, you can choose to sail for when on the highway, or ratchet up for town driving. https://www.slashgear.com/2020-audi-e-tron-electric-suv-cabin-revealed-5-things-to-know-04536502/ http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/audi/e-tron/103979/new-audi-e-tron-2018-ride-review DELIGHT FOR JAGUAR I-PACE AT 2018 AUTO EXPRESS NEW CAR AWARDS And a quick note on the I-PACE. There are lots of car awards events run by magazines, and they all have various categories. For a while EV's have been picking up wins in certain sub categories, but that changed last night. "The all-electric Jaguar I-PACE has been named Car of the Year at the 2018 Auto Express New Car Awards with Editor-in-Chief Steve Fowler describing it as: “the most exciting new car we’ve tested over the past 12 months.” according to Automotiveworld.com. Stat check on the I-PACE...90kWh lithium-ion battery, dual motors for AWD, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and 298 miles on the WLTP test cycle. Steve Fowler, Editor-in-chief of Auto Express said: “The I-PACE proves that brilliant electric cars are right here, right now – it’s the most exciting new car we’ve tested over the past 12 months. We love the way it looks, the space and quality of the interior and most of all that it drives exactly how a modern-day Jaguar should – it’s fantastic fun. On top of all that, it’ll cover city-to-city distances on a single charge in complete comfort – it’s a massively impressive car that bodes well for our electric future.” https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/double-delight-electric-jaguar-pace-2018-auto-express-new-car-awards/ FORMER TOP GEAR PRESENTER TESTS NEW TESLA P100DL FOR ELECTRIC GT The Electric GT championship launches this year, not officially endorsed by Tesla by racing Model S P100DL's with a load of the interior weight stripped out and lots of carbon fibre-y bits added, which loses 1100 pounds overall. On the LoveCars YouTube channel the TV host and racing driver Tiff Needell take one for a spin in Barcelona at the cars launch. There is a race body kit, the door handles are permanently out which indicates the motors are all gone from there, and the Air Suspension is likely to be replaced with a lightweight and more customisable racing setup. Plus with improvements to the brakes and cooling a lot is different to a stock Model S. Simon at Teslarati says " the vehicle’s battery still showed some heating issues, as revealed by the Model S’ systems throttling performance after 1.5 hot laps around the Barcelona track" The series starts racing in Jerez on 4th November and I'll be there at the Silverstone event in 2019. TWO CAR SHARING SCHEMES ANNOUNCED You wait ages for a car sharing scheme and then two come along at once. And no the irony of that joke isn't lost on me, because maybe we should be using buses more and not adding more cars to inner cities. First up a saw Fred at Electrek writing about Renault, and 2,000 new EV's for Paris in ride-sharing services. "Starting in September, Renault will start to make all-electric ZOE, Twizy, Kangoo Z.E, Master Z.E vehicles available for a series of services." The previous car sharing service was Autolib and recently stopped after a dispute with local authorities. And then I see Reuters reporting: "Volkswagen plans to start offering car sharing services using fully electric vehicles in German cities next year as part of efforts to serve consumers who don’t want to buy their own vehicles. Its offering will compete in its home market with DriveNow and Car2Go, the soon-to-be-merged carsharing services of BMW and Daimler. New CEO Herbert Diess, who took office in April, said it was vital for VW “to pick up speed and make an unmistakable mark” in areas including new mobility services which VW wants to contribute a significant share to future group business." https://electrek.co/2018/07/04/renault-fleet-electric-vehicles-ride-hailing-car-sharing-paris/ https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-mobility/vw-to-launch-carsharing-with-electric-vehicles-in-2019-idUSKBN1JU1QK CHINA TO PRODUCE 2 MILLION CARS PER YEAR FROM 2020 And finally a bit of background on China. Because recently I’ve been super excited about Tesla hitting their goals but just a reminder the really big numbers are found when you head East - to China. Plug In sales, or New Energy Vehicles (NEV) as they are branded in China, are up 149% in Q1 this year. In May 94,000 new EV's were registered. The names you probably won't have heard of but which are a big deal... BAIC EC-Series - small family EV, modern styling, sold 12,624 last month, and could well beat the Tesla Model 3 to be the best selling EV in the world this year BYD Qin PHEV - has been selling between 3-4,000 models a month for 9 months. SAIC Baojun E100 - made by Shanghai Auto and GM. It's a tiny 2-seater like the Smart cars, has 39hp and costs just over $14,000. Zhidou D2 EC - looks like a small city car from the 90s, but super cheap, looks like a slightly larger Renault Twizy with a 18kWh battery. BAIC EX-Series - a compact crossover and the first of these 5 you might want on your driveway. Good styling, 48kWh battery, 200miles range and $28,500 price tag. Half of ALL plug in cars in the world last month, June 2018, were made by Chinese OEM's. They are on target to make and sell one million EV's this year. One. Million! And now a new action plan was released yesterday to move forwards. "China will cut coal consumption, boost electric vehicle sales and shut more outdated steel and coke capacity in the coming three years, the State Council said in a long-awaited 2018 to 2020 pollution action plan" reports Reuters: "China is in the fifth year of a “war on pollution” aimed at reversing the damage done to the country’s environment since the economy was opened up in 1978, with President Xi Jinping promising to use the full might of the Chinese Communist Party to meet the country’s goals. The new 2018 to 2020 action plan, released on the country’s official government website, will expand the fight to 82 cities across China. The cabinet also set an annual production and sales target for new energy vehicles at around 2 million vehicles a year by 2020 in order to reduce road emissions." https://in.reuters.com/article/china-pollution/china-to-cut-coal-use-curb-steel-in-2018-2020-pollution-plan-idINKBN1JU0BL COMMUNITY Emails You can listen to all previous 169 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. It’s Sunday 10th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. A quickie today as we’re away for the weekend, sadly not at FullyChargedLIVE (don’t tell the person who’s birthday party we’re going to) but I haven’t missed a show yet, so the portable mic is with me. Not as good as good as the studio but I’m coming to you live today from a Premier Inn! #FullyChargedLIVE Day 2! Good morning if you’re listening to this and you’re going. This is show 146, next Thursday is 150. I like a round number so if there’s anything you’d like to hear more of or less of, to add or improve, please do tweet @EVNewsDaily or email hello@evnewsdaily.com MORE DETAILS ON PORSCHE TAYCAN First of all, let's get the pronunciation sorted for the new name of the Porsche Mission E. It's "Tie Con". And now we've heard from the CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Klaus Zellmer: "Our dealers are telling us that they can’t have this car soon enough, You can expect that there will be new faces in our dealerships and current customers adding a new, all-electric Porsche to their garage." "We anticipate roughly half of our vehicles sold by 2025 will be plug-in hybrids or battery electric vehicles," he said. "Which leaves the other half for internal combustion platforms. So, while some things change, others do not, and a Porsche will always be a Porsche." Yesterday on the podcast I was talking to you about why the announcement video for the Taycan used the tagline "Soul, Electrified", and there's more from Mr Zellmer today in line with what i was saying, which is that Porsche will want to head off any criticism than a Porsche which doesn't make roaring noises isn't really a Porsche. "We intend to redefine the high performance e-vehicle segment (with the Taycan)," Zellmer said. "From day one, our approach has been that a Porsche will always be the sports car of its segment, regardless of its powertrain. And our first all-electric sports car will drive like a Porsche and offer the sportiness and everyday usability we are known for." Stat check: 90kWh battery, two motors for all wheel drive, 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds, 800V/350kW charge speeds to add 100km of range every 4 mins. ASTON MARTIN BOSS WARNS OTHER CEO TO ELECTRIFY OR DIE Andy Palmer at Aston Martin has done an incredible job since he's been in charge turning round the company so that it now faces a bright future and one which is already talking about how and when to electrify. Aston Martin enjoyed a 58percent increase in sales last year and it's first profit since 2010. However he's had a few words of advice (warning?!) for CEO's of other mainstream car makers. He says that as everyday cars become more of a commodity they need to differentiate. "I do believe we are at the beginning of end of the traditional automotive industry," Palmer recently told industry outlet Automotive News Europe. "For a long time, the business model has been stack ’em high and sell ’em cheap." "But profitless volume is no way to build a sustainable company. It makes no sense to spend one billion [euros] on a new car and discount it almost at launch," he said. 'We risk moving toward commoditization of a pod. The world does not need dozens of nameplates making the same objects. There are more than 75 automotive nameplates in Europe, but just four plane makers." JAGUAR’S I-PACE UNDERCUTS TESLA RIVAL ON PRICE IN CANADA The Jaguar I-PACE has been showing up on my twitter feed a lot today as it's one of the highlights of FullyChargedLIVE, but I've got some price details for our Canadian listeners. The electric SUV will start at $86,500 when it's on sale late Summer. Putting that into perspective the Tesla Model X starts at $110,200. Stat check: dual motors, 0-62mph in 4.5 and one pedal driving with heavy regen gets you 385kms on a tank. Plus 100kW DC fast charging. POLESTAR FINDS BUYERS IN NORTH AMERICA Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath revealed on Thursday that North America is, in fact, the brand's biggest market, according to a Thursday report from Automotive News. Ingenlath shared the majority of the 500-plus buyers who've made the refundable $2,500 deposit for the hybrid sports coupe are from North America. It will come to the United States to be shown during Monterey Car Week in August. The Polestar 1 will be mostly sold on a subscription basis. Stat check: Hybrid powertrain, 2.0 litre engine with an electric motor on each axle, 93 miles of EV range NEW OCTOPUS ENERGY TARIFF FOR EV OWNERS "Octopus Energy has launched a new “time of use” energy tariff especially designed for bringing down the charging cost for electric vehicle (EV) owners." wrties Catherine Neilan for CityAM: "The new tariff, called Octopus Energy Go, lets EV owners charge their cars for only 5p per kilowatt hour for four hours each night, which could make owning an EV 10 times cheaper than having a car running on fossil fuels. Other existing initiatives to bring down the power cost for EV owners include the Economy 7 tariff, also known as the differential tariff, which has reduced rates for seven hours per night. However, the Go tariff could be up to 25 per cent cheaper." Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, director of product for Octopus Energy, said: “Octopus is passionate about driving the UK’s switch to electric vehicles. We’re delighted to use our innovative tech both to offer the cheapest kWh charge in the market and enable your car to automatically charge itself, a brilliant way to unlock those electric car savings.” RYDER ORDERS A LARGE FLEET OF 500 ELECTRIC VANS Ryder has placed an order for 500 electric vans for it's North American EV truck rental and lease fleet. That's on top of 125 vans which are already on order. Dennis Cooke, President of Global Fleet Management Solutions for Ryder, commented on the announcement: “Ryder continues to see broadening interest in EVs from businesses of various sizes and industries, and especially from those companies in the parcel, final mile, or beverage delivery space. Additionally, there’s interest from customers who have daily return to base routes of 40 to 100 miles and in markets with incentives available for electric vehicles. Companies continue to identify the potential long-term cost, environmental, and efficiency benefits of EVs. We’re proud to expand our relationship with Chanje and expect additional business announcements based on our sales pipeline. This latest announcement with Chanje is one more way we are demonstrating our commitment to maximizing the performance of our customers’ fleets, while providing the flexibility and convenience to implement EVs into their operations.” WHY YOU MAY ONLY NEED TO CHARGE YOUR EV WEEKLY "Consumer perceptions and fears about the driving range of electric cars are often blamed as a major reason for the lack of take-up, but a new report illustrates how those ideas are ill-founded." says RenewEconomy.com.au: "In Australia, the average commuter travels 38km/day, the report shows. According to these figures, the LEAF (once available in Australia) would only have to be charged about once a week. A Tesla S owner on the other hand, would only need to plug in about once every 12 days. (As it turns out, most EV owners would charge them daily in any case, because of the convenience of charging them when parked at home). While charging times for EV drivers on long distance trips may still not be desirable, one thing is clear – range anxiety for those commuting on short distance trips or in the city may no longer be a valid concern." Wednesday 28th March 2018. Firstly a ‘thank you' to one of the podcast listeners from Iceland who just sent a quick note about new chargers there. A little geography lesson by the way, if I drive north here in the UK and got to the top of Scotland, then swam for a bit, I’d eventually hit Iceland. This is from an Icelandic listener Hilmar Sigurpalsson @HilmarSigurpals who is waiting for his 40kWh Nissan LEAF due in May, and he let me know the new network of EV chargers there means you’re never more than 100km away from one. They are on the ring road, which is the road which travels around the edge of the country. Great that whatever size of country, and Iceland is about 350,000 people, EV’s are spreading. Around 200 new LEAFS are heading there and around 1200 original LEAFS were sold there. GOOGLE’S WAYMO AND JAGUAR I-PACE JOIN FORCES Yesterday in New York, Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover announced a partnership which will see the Google-owned company purchase up to 20,000 I-PACEs for self-driving transport. Jaguar call it “the world’s first premium self-driving electric vehicle” So let’s deal with the elephant in the room. I think everyone presumed that title would go to a Model X. And it still might, after all, we’ve not actually seen either of them driving themselves across North America as Elon promised we’d see a Tesla do by the end of 2017. They say: “Waymo Jaguar I-PACEs, equipped with Waymo's self-driving technology, will start testing later this year. On-road testing and capturing real-world data will allow Waymo and Jaguar Land Rover engineers to refine technology and deliver optimum safety and reliability. Up to 20,000 I-PACEs will be built in the first two years of production and be available for riders of Waymo’s driverless service, serving a potential one million trips per day.” To date, Waymo is the only company with a fleet of fully self-driving cars — with no one in the front seat — on public roads. Later this year Waymo will launch the world’s first selfdriving transportation service allowing members of the public to use Waymo’s app to request a vehicle. It did cross my mind, and I mean this respectfully because someone lost their life and that’s far more important than announcements, but do you think at any point they might have shelved this for a few weeks after the Uber crash? Clearly they didn’t feel that the general principle of driverless cars was having to be justified, and you can understand that choice, given Waymo’s excellent safety record. Waymo now have 6 models: a small car, an SUV, a firefly prototype, a Chrysler Pacifica minivan you might have seen in the YouTube videos and a semi-truck. Waymo have said they want to offer the right ride for the right purpose. I think that shows just how far along they are, and how people have underestimated them. Whilst others are still getting the tech right, Waymo are onto the stage of having mini vans for Soccer trips and Semi Trucks for commercial deliveries. The Jaguar I-PACE will start in Phoenix this year, and Waymo said they were attracted by the 90kWh battery, mileage between charges, and quick charging to add 100kms in 15 mins. It’s also now clear, after years of reports saying Google and Apple would make their own car and take down the car industry with their superbrains, actually they’ve focussed on the hardware/software combo and let expert auto makers deal with the hard job of actually making the car! And Jaguar are doing just that with the Jaguar XJ saloon/sedan coming next year win electric form. And all their models having electrification in the next 19 months, by 2020. Incidentally you know I read a press release yesterday from Jaguar about the cars they’re taking to the New York Auto Show, and I had to correct myself because it said the I-PACE had 150kW charging. Well the Jaguar press release today about the Waymo partnership said it was 100kW. I’m going to go and configure one online as if I’m buying to see what that says. Must try hard NOT to actually buy one! And how does all this affect the poster child of electric cars? Awfully for Tesla .Following this news, the stock went into freefall. I’m not an investor in Tesla or any car stocks, but around 10% of the value was wiped off the company today. At the time of writing which was 4pm Eastern. It must be said the U.S. also opened an enquiry into the fatal crash in Mountain View, California. NVidia also suspended self driving tests and their shares were down 9%. I only mention the financials because it will cause negative stories about electric cars, and it will be noticed by other car makers. So I’m not suggesting the Jaguar news caused this, but it’s certainly clear from watching the commentary today, lots of people made the assumption Tesla were leaders in self driving electric cars, and they were taken aback Waymo might be ahead. CHINESE PLANS TO STANDARDISE EVS After all this excitement, some news in brief. China is working to standardise it’s own EV sector, which they are heavily promoting to both improve their own air quality and grab the opportunity to be a world leader in the technology. They are focussing on one system of recharging, battery design and consumption. At present the powerbase of car makers is North America or Germany and China see the chance to move that to Beijing. And frankly, from observing this all from the UK and the climate policies taken in the USA along with the behaviour of German car makers in relation to lying about diesel pollution, I can see that happening. NISSAN STARTS BATTERY EXCHANGE PROGRAM Nissan say: “Nissan LEAF owners in Japan will be able to exchange their cars’ old batteries for refabricated ones under a new, fee-based program. Starting in May, owners of the 100% electric Nissan LEAF can turn in their used batteries and, for a fee, receive refabricated ones. Nissan is using the battery-refabrication capabilities of 4R Energy Corp., a company established through a joint venture with Sumitomo Corp., to offer the program. As demand for electric vehicles grows, the number of used batteries will increase signifi Nissan hopes that by reclaiming these batteries, it can help lower battery replacement costs and heighten the used-car value of electric vehicles. This will enhance the electric-car ownership experience, which in turn will help promote their use, ultimately contributing to lower CO2 emissions. Nissan will initially offer 24-kilowatt-hour refabricated batteries for 300,000 yen apiece, with plans to expand the lineup. Exchange costs for brand-new Nissan LEAF batteries are 650,000 yen for 24 kWh; 800,000 yen for 30 kWh; and 820,000 yen for 40 kWh.” NISSAN LAUNCHES SOLAR INSTALLATIONS And staying with Nissan, according to Mark at InsideEVs, Nissan and Ecosystem Japan want to install more solar panels in the Kanto region of Japan. They’ll add the panels to the roof for free, you sign up for 20 years to buy the electricity, and at the end of the contract the panels are yours. A nice bonus for new LEASF owners. MORE ELECTRIC VANS After we told you yesterday the Workhorse electric vans being unveiled today for use in the Bay Area. Now, Man Trucks are selling a full electric van called the MAN eTGE. Again it’s 100 miles or 160 kms and designed for urban routes where air quality is worse from diesel delivery vans. It has a 36kWh battery. Plus of course, for those many cities which are moving towards no-diesel zones. MAN says 70% of light commercial vehicles do less than 100kms, or 62 miles, per day based on their extensive knowledge of how they products are used. Also the average speed is low. HYUNDAI UNION HEAD FEARS ELECTRIC CARS Reuters report: “Hyundai Motor’s union chief warned its workers may face a similar crisis to the one hitting General Motors’ (GM.N) South Korean unit as sales in key markets slide, adding that electric cars were ‘evil’ and will destroy jobs.” Now I’m willing to chalk this one down to translation, I don’t believe a union boss would call the future technology of EVs evil. Not in the way you and I think of evil. By the way, South Korean unions are strong. 500 employees a year get a free week-long trip to Europe, Hyundai supports their sporting events, and they are seeking a 7.4% wage rise. Nice if you can get it. BMW i3 SALES TOP 10,000 IN UK After 5 years on sale the BMW i3 just sold it’s 10,000 car in the uk. The latest 33kWh battery gets you 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. Plus there’s the new i3s which uses the same battery but is a bit lower, a bit wider, and a bit faster 0-60 in 6.9 seconds. But you lose a bit of range for that. Congrats to BMW. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 27th March 2018. BEAUTIFUL BENTEY BATTERIES Bentleys led designer Stefan Sielaff recently told Auto express that “A full electric Bentley is something I am extremely convinced we have to do. It will happen not so far in the future”. For executives used to not saying anything because it’s all so competitive, we can take that as a ‘yes’ for something coming. This ties into what had previously been reported about possibly using the Mission E platform. Electric luxury cars make so much sense from the perspective of the driver in that they’re quiet and very fast. From an engineering perspective those large cars provide ample room for a 100 or 120kW battery for long ranges, plus a motor front and rear gives incredibly speed plus safety. And for a designer, an EV takes away all that engine and transmission from a luxury car which can be used for extra space. They can start with a blank sheet of paper to reimagine something fresh. Those luxury cars need to waft across long distances with 4 or 5 adults and all their luggage, and an electric drivetrain suits that perfectly. This is all part of a plan to bring a new type of customer to Bentley. Auto Express say: “The next-generation Continental GT will get a PHEV drivetrain, and the Crewe manufacturer plans to have its entire range electrified by 2025. Speculation at one time was that the EV could be called "Barnato," an homage to Joel Woolf "Babe" Barnato, one of the original Bentley Boys of the 1920s.” https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/26/designer-full-electric-bentley FANTASTIC FLEETS A new report from ALD Automotive shows nearly all company car journeys could be taken in an EV. ALDs telematics showed that 77% of fleet journeys were LESS than 1oo miles a day. They surveyed random company cars covering a total of 95,000 miles and 2,396 hours of total journey time. 52% of daily journeys were even below 50 miles a day. Only 12% of daily journeys were over 150 miles a day. Matt Dale, consultancy services manager for ALD Automotive said: ““Increasingly, we’re seeing the opportunity for fleets to employ a more holistic mobility strategy that looks beyond the traditional view of a single company car. For many journeys, public transport, car share, pool or hire cars are the more sensible option from both a cost and convenience perspective. On the few occasions where electric vehicles aren’t practical, drivers can supplement their travel with these more appropriate forms of transport. Fleets may well find that, due to the lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) implications of running Plug-in Hybrid (PHEVs) and BEVs, they can afford to facilitate other smart, mobility solutions and still save money.” NICE ONE, NORWAY! A report on Electrive today shows that EV sales in Norway now to 5.1%, last year pure BEV’s were up over 40%, and there are 142,000 all electric cars and vans currently driving around Norway on lovely clean energy from all their renewables. Tesla have had a slow Jan and Feb in Norway but so far have delivered over 1,000 cars in Norway with another week of the month left. In the capital Oslo, for every 1000 cars you see, 37 are electric. https://fleetworld.co.uk/77-of-fleet-journeys-could-be-completed-by-evs/ JAGUAR HEADING TO N.Y.C. The New York International Motor Show is soon and a press release landed from Jaguar Land Rover. They’ll be at the show with the F-PACE, I-PACE and E-PACE compact performance SUV. Of their I-PACE they say: “The Jaguar I-PACE is the electric vehicle drivers have been waiting for. Clean, smart and safe, I-PACE delivers sustainable sports car performance, next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology and five-seat SUV practicality to place Jaguar at the forefront of the EV revolution. With a state-of-the-art 90kWh lithium-ion battery using 432 pouch cells, I-PACE delivers a range of up to 480km (WLTP cycle). Owners will be able to achieve a 0-80 per cent battery charge in 40 minutes using DC charging (150kW). From 2020 all new Jaguar Land Rover vehicles will be electrified, giving customers even more choice. A portfolio of electrified products will be introduced across the entire model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles as well as continuing to offer ultra-clean petrol and diesel engines. https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/three-new-jaguar-land-rover-vehicles-share-spotlight-new-york WORKHORSE 100-MILE EV VANS Finally according to Clean Technica: “Workhorse* will introduce it N-Gen all electric van at the San Francisco City Hall on March 28. The battery electric N-Gen is an all-wheel drive delivery vehicle that features a low floor height and a tall roof for ease of access. N-Gen vans will be available in the San Francisco Bay area starting next month. The N-Gen van has a range of 100 miles. Workhorse has also developed large PHEV delivery vans for UPS and WB Mason that lower tailpipe emissions while offering lower fuel and maintenance costs.” Follow the link in the show notes to read more from Clean Technica. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/03/26/workhorse-will-unveil-n-gen-electric-van-san-francisco-march-28 I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 14th March 2018. A VOLKSWAGEN SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT Until today, I don’t think I’m being unfair by saying VW’s commitment to electric cars thus far has been some conversion of their existing platforms such as the eGolf and eUp; a series of press releases about how much they’re spending; three prototypes they made available to Fully Charged to drive and some motor show concept cars. I must admit, I have a love hate relationship with VW. I’ve had two Golfs, one was a petrol and one a diesel. I adored them. But their behaviour as a company and their apparent lack of humility turned me off. They certainly are not the only ones which tried to game the emission system, but they are the biggest who got caught. Back to why I love them, they make Tesla look like kids in the playground in terms of many cars they build each year, and their capacity make EVs in serious numbers. I’ve always wanted them to get serious about putting their incredible talents into making electric cars. However I must admit, whilst I knew they were doing a lot behind the scenes to secure supply contracts, in recent weeks I was began to wonder how long that process would take. It must be enormously complicated. That all changed today at their annual media conference in Berlin, as they firmed up their plans and put everyone on notice exactly how serious they are. And by the way, as a publically traded company, I should add vacuous statements of intent don’t really happen when any commercially relevant info can nudge your share prince. Headlines: The big headline number is 20bn of contracts awarded for EV battery projects in Europe and China. They are working to cut amount of cobalt needed too. Deals are likely with Samsung SDI Co., LG Chem Ltd.and Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. for Europe and China, with North American deals still TBC. Incidentally Volkswagen’s $24.7bn battery plans compare to Tesla’s $17.5 billion worth of battery contracts. Electrified Vehicles will be made at 16 locations by To begin with, 9 of it’s production sites will be re-tooled for electric car production, before adding the next 7 as demands require. 3 million electrified vehicles by 2025. This will include a range of 80 electrified vehicles from VW, to Audi, Porsche and others from their 12 brands. The previous announcement indicated 50 pure BEVs and 30 hybrids – I can’t say 100% whether that’s PHEV or soft hybrids. One new EV launch per month. VW CEO Mattias Muller said that’s how they’d achieve the pace of change, starting in 2022. The first launch will be the Audio e-tron. Preorders are already open in the UK with £1000 deposits being taken and the specs being similar to other SUVs in that space like the Jaguar I-PACE and the forthcoming Mercedes EQC. It’s likely to have a 90kWh battery, 200 real world miles in all conditions and sub-8 second 0-60mph. Next will come the VW ID, which is very Golf-y in all respects, will be in production next year and on the roads by 2020. That’s the model which kickstarts their transition. They confirm it will be called NEO. Their self-driving EV concept, which is called Sedric, is confirmed to be heading towards production. It looks like a pod and is their vision for the future of transport. Mr Muller didn’t confirm which VW brand would own it. Let me remind you that upcoming stringent emissions limits, which will require the brand’s average vehicle CO2 emissions to be no higher than 95g/km from 2020. Mr Muller said all of this marked their “intentions to launch the largest fleet of electric vehicles of all brands in the world. Our drivetrains will be designed in such a way that this will be met without paying fines. And we will make sure that the conventional, traditional drivetrain will be modernised, so they will make a contribution to better air quality in our towns and cities as well. The diesel scandal told us there was a need for radical change; the crisis has acted as a catalyst. We have pulled out all the stops over the past months to implement the Roadmap E swiftly and resolutely." Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Friday 2nd March 2018. Coming up today we’ll talk exclusively about the Jaguar I-PACE and why it deserves the term game-changer. The global digital reveal featured Johnny Smith who shared the most interesting specs on the car, which is being assembled in Graz in Austria. So let me tell you my personal Top 10 highlights from the I-PACE launch. 10…Strong Regen – this is an essential on any car which follows the Nissan LEAF with the exceptional ePedal. I-PACE has two levels of regen and on the strongest setting is enough to mean you’ll rarely use the brake pedal. But will it also apply friction brakes like the LEAF? We’ll wait to find out. 9…Battery Preconditioning – batteries are a bit like us humans, we’re happy about 20degrees C. And when the I-PACE is plugged in it will use thermal management to ensure your precious electrons are kept at the perfect temperature. It’s thanks to a heat pump for when it’s cold. 8...The Tech – Jaguar’s recent InControl® Touch Pro Duo™ infotainment System, which we first saw on the Range Rover Velar and later on the 2018 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, plus Touch Pro Duo, which relies on a pair of innovative touchscreens which work in conjunction with capacitive sensors and tactile physical controls, It’s not all just one big screen like a Model 3, you still have a couple of buttons where Jaguar thought they were necessary. 7…Alexa – all part of the connected car. You can ask your Amazon Echo device: “Is my car locked?,” “What is the charging level?,” and “Do I have enough range to get to work?” 6…The Size – not too big, not too small. Not to tall, not too low. Short overhangs to make the most of the battery platform and get the most interior space, keeping only the room at the front needed for the crash structure. The short, low bonnet and curved rear screen make the Tesla Model X look a bit old and flabby. 5…The Range. 300 miles. 90kWh battery. CCS Combo charger for rapid charging. The charging speed is officially 100kW. 0-80% in 45 minutes. 4…I—PACE eTrophy - OK this is a bit of a cheat because it wasn’t revealed today, but it’s important to expose the cars to a new audience. These will be 30 minute races supporting FormulaE, with 20 cars on track at once. Cars will be modified for racing with extra aero and diffuser. 3…Performance - 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. That’s sports car performance. Two motors, designed by Jaguar, both and rear. Of equal size. Jaguar have a tradition of sporty, well handing cars they will want to uphold. Optional air suspension, which can actually lower the car by a full 10mm at speed, to reduce drag. The battery is all down low along the bottom of the car to lower the centre of gravity to make an SUV handle like a sports car with 50:50 weight distribution. It’s 394hp or 298kw of power. 2…Value - £63,495 for the base model, and in the UK you can take off £4,500 for the plug in grant, bringing you down to £58,995. There are three trim levels plus a First Edition model, and one drivetrain / battery size. It’s all aluminium and comes with a three year, unlimited mileage warranty on the car, and an 8-year battery warranty. There’s price parity with a Model S 75, and with the Jaguar you get a much larger battery; the same range; 394bhp vs 329 for the Tesla; almost 50% more torque; an interior that would feel at home in any Range Rover; and a similar 0-60 time to the Tesla. And Jaguar have done all that before every other major manufacturer, making significant investments. 1…Over The Air (OTA) Updates – I thought long and hard about what to make number one on my Top 10, and let me tell you why this is so important. ICE cars have had 100 years to get to where they are now: still polluting, still inefficient, still made of too many parts, still reliant on having you take it to a dealer when it has a fault who plugs it in. Whereas in a few short years, the pace of change for EVs is much faster, from batteries to drivetrains to operating systems. All of that means your car is far more like your mobile phone which, as it’s basically some commoditised hardware being made special by custom software, the same culture of OTA updates will apply. The idea of buying a car and it still being the same car in 12 months is quickly becoming old fashioned, very soon people will expect their car to be updated just like their phone, as new safety features or efficiencies are developed. The architecture of an EV, that of a battery + hardware + software lends itself to constant improvement. You only need to look at Tesla to see what I’m talking about. Well done Jaguar. Finally a couple of housekeeping points. A documentary, titled ‘Fully Charged’ aired at the end of the webcast, giving a behind the scenes insight into the creators of the Jaguar I-PACE. Watch it here on the Jaguar website. Also I chose my Top 10 articles about the I-PACE reveal which I’ve linked to in the podcast description, and also on my blog page where all the podcasts go, go to evnewdaily.com The order books are open now. I’ll be searching down the back of the sofa for some extra spare change. https://electrek.co/2018/03/01/jaguar-i-pace-all-electric-production/ https://www.whatcar.com/news/jaguar-i-pace/ https://insideevs.com/jaguar-i-pace-debuts-with-240-miles-of-range-90-kwh-battery/ http://www.evo.co.uk/geneva-motor-show/20886/production-ready-2018-jaguar-i-pace-electric-suv-revealed https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/news/jaguar-i-pace-revealed-all-electric-family-suv-front-ev-revolution/ https://www.greencarguide.co.uk/2018/03/jaguar-pace-officially-launched/ https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-geneva-motor-show/2018-jaguar-i-pace-revealed-395bhp-and-298-mile-range-pivotal http://evfleetworld.co.uk/jaguar-i-pace-pricing-range-and-final-spec-revealed/ https://plugin-magazine.com/driving/jaguar-i-pace/?utm_source=refferal&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=tweepy Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Tuesday 27th February 2018. Coming up today we’ll talk about Tesla being on the rise and Mercedes-Benz heading to China… JAGUAR I-PACE LIVESTREAM DATE CONFIRMED …but first, we’re not far away from the official launch of the first real, serious competitor to the Tesla Model X – The Jaguar I-PACE. We’ve seen videos of them testing in California and also extreme Winter testing, which is a nod to the work Jaguar have done to minimise the issue of cold weather reducing range. This is due to an advanced battery thermal management system taking care of that 90kWh battery. It’s 4 wheel drive, motors front and rear of equal size (unlike Teslas) generating 395hp. The headline charge time is 0-80% in 40 mins using a 100kW charger…if you can find one of them! The live stream of the event will be 1pm Eastern, 6pm UK time, 7pm Central European Time. 5 days later it makes its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show. According to Jaguar: “Since revealing the I-Pace Concept in 2016, we have been counting down to this moment. The all-electric I-Pace is not only a pioneer within our business, it promises to revolutionize the industry. Never before have I been so excited for a launch –the world is watching with great anticipation and I cannot wait for the world to see everything we have achieved with this car.” If you’d like to read more about the I-PACE between now and launch, I’d recommend the most recent issue of Autovolt magazine. https://carbuzz.com/news/look-out-tesla-jaguar-i-pace-production-ev-to-premiere-this-week VOLVO CALL TIME ON NEW ENGINE DEVELOPMENT Lead time and life cycles of cars and their parts is one clue to where companies think they’ll be at points of time in the future. From your mobile phone which probably get an annual refresh to a 4-cylinder petrol engine that might have a 6-7 product cycle. Now Volvo has said that the current crop of petrol engines will be the last it develops, which indicates where Volvo thinks the money will be in 7 years and what time of cars they’ll be selling. Volvo were the first major manufacturer to commit to every model being electrified by 2019. However we expect to see them making the most of their investment in engines, and add soft hybrid or full hybrid power to those. Volvo are expected to add up to 3 all electric models in the next three years, not including their spin-off Polestar. http://www.thedrive.com/news/18788/volvo-is-done-developing-gasoline-engines-report-says TESLA ON THE RISE AGAIN Tesla’s market capitalisation topped $60bn yesterday, as shares on Monday 26th Feb over $357. With shares up 20% it could be on it’s way to beating the previous best of $386. Meanwhile Bloomberg estimate over 1,000 Model 3’s are being produced every week – or around 150 every day. And last week we heard that non-Tesla owners were finally being allowed to order their cars. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-60-billion-market-cap-model-3-production-upbeat/ CROWDFUNDING CONTINUES THE UNITI ONE STORY At the other end of the spectrum, away from $150,000 Tesla SUVs, is a small Swedish car company called Uniti. They used a crowdfunding campaign to raise 12m Euro for the small city car with a 22kWh battery which, due to light weight, can carry the car for 300kms. Part of the battery is also removable to take with you and charge in your office. So far 2,000 people have made a pre-order for the 15,000 Euro Uniti One, with deliveries set for next year. http://www.livingit.euronews.com/2018/02/26/crowdfunded-electric-car-to-hit-market MERCEDES-BENZ THE NEXT IN LINE TO MAKE CARS IN CHINA And finally, we’ve only just digested the news that Geely bought a large stake in Daimler, and now Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it will make their cars thanks to a tie-up with another Chinese company. This time it’s the state-owned BAIC, and an investment of 1.5bn Euros will see a new production facility to made the EQ electric cars. The first model to be made will be the EQ SUV due for release next year. https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/02/mercedes-benz-make-electric-vehicles-china/ Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
