So far this year, electric vehicle (EV) sales have been less than expected in the United States and Europe, but growth remains strong in China. Why is EV adoption slowing in North America, and what is different in China? We examine the latest sales numbers and the factors that could be contributing to slower growth in North America. Factors include a lack of charging infrastructure, the high cost of fast charging, high depreciation, and a current shortage of plug-in hybrid options. EV competitiveness with gasoline cars, especially in the compact car segments, remains an issue. To help us with the conversation, our guest this week is Lawrence Romanosky, a Calgary-based 'car guy' with 20 years of experience as a luxury car sales manager. Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright.WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will plead guilty in deal with US and be freed from prisonSummary: Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks who published a trove of classified US military documents in 2010 and has been on the run from the US Justice Department ever since—initially spending years living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, before being locked up in a UK prison—has reportedly made a deal that will see him plead guilty to one of the 18 charges on which he was indicted in 2019, which will allow him to return to his home country of Australia with a time-served sentence.Context: Assange was at the center of several major scandals in the early 20-teens, most of them linked to allegations of hacking, divulging state secrets, and embarrassing the US military, because many of the classified documents that were leaked by WikiLeaks were related to US activities in Afghanistan and Iraq, and diplomatic cables from around that same time, and several of them showed human rights violations or contained transcriptions of US officials insulting their international peers; Assange has long struggled against extradition to the US, fearing he would face the death penalty if sent there, and this agreement, if it's approved by a judge, would seem to end his long-time exile, allowing him to return home to his family without any additional prison time.—The Associated PressOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. To support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Music industry giants allege mass copyright violation by AI firmsSummary: A group of music industry entities, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Records, have sued Udio and Suno—a pair of AI-oriented music-generation companies—for allegedly ripping off songs owned by these labels to train their AI systems.Context: These companies are just two of many that have popped up over the past year or two, and which allow their customers to generate ostensibly original music just by describing what they want to make, and that's possible because the AI systems they use are trained on gobs of existing music, much of which is allegedly owned by these record labels, and which, according to these lawsuits, were incorporated into the training data illegally; this is similar to other lawsuits that are working their way through global court systems right now, related to books, photos, films, journalism and other sorts of human-made work that are being collected and aggregated by AI companies to train their models, and there's little in the way of existing legal precedent on this sort of thing, so it's difficult to say, at this point, how these sorts of cases will pan out in different legal jurisdictions.—Ars TechnicaChina becomes first country to retrieve rocks from the Moon's far sideSummary: The Chinese space program successfully returned lunar soil samples from the far side of the Moon, yesterday, marking yet another accomplishment for the burgeoning program, and a new first-ever achievement for humanity.Context: The Chang'e-6 mission was a follow-up to previous Chinese missions that demonstrated the country's growing capacity in space, initially allowing them to photograph and map the Moon's surface, then land on and deploy a rover on the side facing Earth, then deploying a rover on the far side of the Moon—a first for any space agency—in 2019; the agency's previous Moon mission brought about four pounds of Earth-side Moon regolith home (something that's only been previously accomplished by the US and Soviet Union), and this most recent achievement is thus far unique to China, which means it's a big deal in terms of their in-space credibility, but also for human knowledge, as those far-side lunar materials could teach us a lot about how that half differs from the side we continuously see, and about the Moon's origins.—The New York TimesUsed EVs have become less expensive in the US, on average, than their gas-consuming competition according to a recent report from iSeeCars; this price difference is being attributed to a perceptual value-drop in EVs, due to infrastructural limitations (especially a dearth of charging stations in some regions).—Business Insider$10.75 billionSum Amazon will invest on cloud and logistics infrastructure in Germany, most of it by 2026, according to a recent announcement by the company. That's in addition to a previously announced investment by Amazon in Germany, which (including the new sum) adds up to a total of just over $19 billion, this fresh investment alone creating something like 4,000 jobs in the country. —ReutersTrust Click Get full access to One Sentence News at onesentencenews.substack.com/subscribe

There's nothing like a sunny May 1st. Today we talk about Ford's new AI driven Dealer training tool. We also review the fastest and slowest moving inventory, as well as the newly launched ability for Roblox users to purchase real life Walmart items in-game. Ford is introducing "Ford University," a cutting-edge AI-powered training platform aimed at enhancing dealership staff effectiveness and customer interactionsThe platform, designed with cinematic storytelling, covers Ford's history and detailed technical breakdowns of vehicle features.Ford University utilizes AI to analyze dealership employees' performance, offering personalized feedback and "missions" that simulate customer interactions.AI feedback focuses on speech nuances, use of filler words, and the accuracy of vehicle descriptions against competitors.Launched in U.S. dealerships, the system will expand content to include technical staff by year's end. Some wheels take off faster than a teenager after curfew. Others linger awkwardly like guests at a party long after the music has stopped. As the latest study from iSeeCars shows, when it comes to clearing out inventory, not all cars are created equal. See the list hereFast Movers —Hybrids lead the charge: The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is the fastest-selling new car at 14.2 days on market.Top used cars: Lexus RX 350h tops the list at 12.3 days on market, followed closely by other Lexus models.Sluggish Sellers —EVs lag behind: New electric vehicles are the slowest in the new car market, taking 70.6 days on average to sell.Used car slow sellers: Maserati and other premium brands dominate the list of slowest-selling used cars.Slow to go: All of the slowest-selling used cars are taking 90 or more days to sell, with the top-ranked Jeep Cherokee taking more than three times the 54-day average, at 169.7 days.Seemingly at the top of their game Walmart and Roblox are first-in to pioneer accessible virtual e-commerce, launching a collaborative platform where users can purchase real-life items and have them shipped to their home through an immersive Roblox experience. The partnership introduces "Walmart Discovered" on Roblox, allowing users to buy physical products from a virtual store that mirrors Walmart's online shopping experience.Users can try virtual versions of products on their avatars before purchasing, with all transactions securely handled via a Walmart API.The initiative targets users 13 and older in the U.S., featuring products designed in collaboration with Roblox creators like Sarabxlla and MD17_RBLX.The pilot, running through May, serves as a test to evaluate the potential for Roblox to facilitate physical goods sales without taking a revenue share during this period.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Used EV Pricing, Rivian's Pricing Adjustments, A Waymo on Fire

It's Monday and now that the Superbowl is over, we can get back to the real game!  Today we are talking about more shifting dynamics in both the new and used EV segments. We also talk about a rather fiery incident involving a Waymo vehicle in San Francisco. At the NADA Show we heard all types of conversations around EVs as the volatility of the entire segment is real. Let's talk about the used market first. With prices heavily influenced by fluctuations in new EV pricing, the used market has seen a sharp drop of around 30%. Despite a small market share, used EVs are becoming more accessible. Franchise dealerships sold around 180,000 used EVs in 2023, less than 1% of the market.Price adjustments in new EVs and government incentives are expected to further drive down used EV prices as well as the addition of affordable new EVs later this yearThe federal tax credit, under the Inflation Reduction Act, is offering up to $4,000 for EVs at least two model years old and under $25,000. With Hertz recent decision to liquidate one third of its EV fleet, a flood of eligible Tesla's have flooded the market. Now on to the new side: Rivian has reduced prices on its R1T pickup and R1S crossover base models by $3,100, aligning with federal tax incentives and introducing a new battery option to stimulate sales. The price adjustment reflects the broader challenge of slower EV market growth, with Rivian aiming to make its vehicles more accessible amidst competitive pricing pressures.Rivian's introduction of a "standard-plus" battery option offers an additional 45 miles of range at previous prices, highlighting the company's response to consumer demand for greater value and range."Like every electric vehicle producer with a U.S. presence, Rivian has to reconcile past expectations with current market realities," notes Karl Braueran, Executive Analyst at iSeeCars.Apparently a crowd in San Francisco found a use for a Waymo, driverless EV as it was set ablaze by a crowd using fireworks in San Francisco's Chinatown during Lunar New Year celebrations. The incident involved some smashing windows, with the car eventually engulfed in flames as someone threw a firework into the stopped vehicleWaymo reported no injuries as the car was not carrying passengers at the time, and the company is collaborating with local authorities to address the situation."This was a one-off event," stated a Waymo spokesperson, amidst concerns over increasing public hostility towards driverless cars, highlighted by recent accidents involving autonomous vehicles.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

According to the car shopping site iSeeCars.com, used car prices have jumped 41% over the past several years! Here are some tips to take the edge off of that sticker shock.  OUR 7 TIPS FOR BUYING A USED CAR: 1. Establish Your Budget: Determine how much you can afford, whether paying in cash or financing, ensuring the payments fit within your budget. Aim for a down payment of 10-20% and keep the loan term as short as possible, ideally three years.2. Choose the Right Make and Model: Consider your family size, cargo space needs, safety, and vehicle reliability, and be open to having two or three options.3. Research Vehicle Value: Use Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds to estimate the value of your chosen vehicles.4. Search Online Listings: Look for fairly priced vehicles on Auto Trader, Craigslist, AutoList, and Carmax, creating a list of potential options.5. Obtain Vehicle History: Contact the seller for the VIN to check the vehicle's history on CarFax or AutoCheck, ensuring a clean title, no serious accidents, and verifying the mileage.6. Get an Inspection: Have the vehicle inspected at an independent shop of your choosing, and walk away if the seller refuses.7. Make an Offer: While used car inventories are still limited, making haggling tough, ensure that the car is in good condition to last many years with proper care. On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: I want to know how much money I need to have in the bank to retire at 65 with monthly expenses around $3000, and also inquire about tax planning for retirement.I'm 60, on disability, and heard at 65 my benefits may change; should I prepare for decreased income?I'm inquiring about reverse mortgages on behalf of my sister, whose husband passed away; can the house be saved, and can a sibling assist in this process?Having recently retired to Kentucky, my wife and I are seeking resources to educate ourselves on investing during retirement, ensuring we can continue ministry work without financial strain. RESOURCES MENTIONED:Find a Certified Kingdom Advisorssa.govmovement.com/faithfaithandinvesting.com Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. From the get-go, it was the cream of the crop. It's what everybody wanted. Almost immediately, it became a status symbol in the same way the best Cadillacs were decades before. The Escalade IQ is riding on a wave of all that history, all that cachet and all of that greatness, and only now it's in a fully electrified package."It's 4 inches wider and a foot longer than a standard EscaladeOutput of as much as 750hp, 0-60 in 5 seconds, and has a 55” curved display borrowed from the luxury CelestiqExecs confirmed that the new model will be sold alongside ICE models on Dealership lotsOnline technology retailer Newegg is working to transform reviews in e-comm with its latest AI-driven feature. It's a Monday close to the month and we've got all the energy as we talk about Used EV Pricing, what it's going to take to safely ship EVs, as well as an elevated solution to deliver digital orders by Chick-Fil-A.EV prices continue to plunge, causing a ripple effect across the used car sector and putting a dent in dealer profits. Analysis shows a year-on-year drop in used EV prices eight times higher than other cars, with economic uncertainties, low gas prices, and general lack of interest dampening consumer enthusiasm for EVs.Analysis of 1.8 million used cars by iSeeCars showed a 3.6% year-over-year drop in June 2023 for 1 to 5 year old used cars, but used EV prices fell eight times more (29.5%) compared to the previous year. iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer told Wards “Market share is very slow in states that already have a lot of the EV market share. In other words, Washington, California and Oregon are three of the highest states with EV market share and the slowest states in growing their EV market share.”He continued “There is a threshold of between 7% and 10% where it starts to become very difficult to keep growing EV sales and market share. A burning car carrier off the Dutch coast is being relocated away from shipping routes as part of a salvage operation. The ship was carrying 3,783 vehicles, including 498 BEVs…many more EVs than the originally reported 25Mini, BMW and Mercedes-Benz confirmed they have hundreds of new vehicles among those on the shipMaritime shippers are struggling to manage the fire risk associated with shipping EVs, as the lithium-ion batteries in these cars can cause hard-to-control fires. The number of ship fires increased to 209 in 2022, the highest in a decade, and a significant share of these incidents are associated with cargo containing lithium-ion batteries. Chick-fil-A is further adapting to the digital world while cutting down on their drive-thru lines spilling into traffic as the fast-food giant plans to elevate customer convenience by unveiling two new restaurant designs - a raised, four-lane drive-thru concept in Atlanta and a walk-up only store in New York City next year. The new drive-thru lanes run below the structure and can hold up to 75 cars as a "sophisticated food transport system" delivers meals to the ground level for distributionThe design includes an order-ahead lane for customers picking up mobile orders, which are prepared as the customer approaches to ensure freshness. The New York City restaurant will be a walk-up only concept, designed primarily for mobile customers, and will not feature any cash registers or drink towers.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Both dual- and single-motor versions will be available, with long-range versions featuring a 102 kWh battery. The Polestar 4 is expected to launch in China in November 2023, with a global release planned for 2024. Prices start at around €60,000. Polestar plans to start production in South Carolina in 2024 for the U.S. and European markets. The company aims to sell 80,000 cars this year, focusing on delivering more Polestar 2 hatchbacks. Tesla has reduced prices for its Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles, with the Model 3 Standard Range RWD now priced below $40,000. The price cuts come as demand has decreased and interest rates have made car purchases more difficult. A study by iSeeCars found that Tesla has the most car recalls, with Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X making up four of the top five most recalled models. Brands with the least recalls include Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota. Following changes to California's net metering rules, Tesla announced that its Powerwall will help homeowners save up to 92% on their electricity bills. The intelligent and customizable software in Powerwall will optimize energy use for maximum savings. Gogoro partnered with Enel X to create virtual power plants (VPPs) from its battery swapping stations in Taiwan. These VPPs interact with Taiwan's power grid to supply energy when demand exceeds supply. New York State is providing $8.3 million in funding for 255 charging stations across 70 municipalities. The funding comes from the Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant Program. A poll revealed that 40% of U.S. adults are considering switching to electric vehicles (EVs) for their next purchase. However, concerns about high prices and a lack of charging infrastructure remain. BYD's premium brand, Yangwang, began pre-sales of its first model, the U8, at the Shanghai auto show for $160,000. The U8 has over 1,100 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. RAW Charging announced a deal with the National Trust to install charging stations at various heritage sites in the UK over the next three years, in an estimated £12m rollout. Scania and Northvolt have created an electric battery with a lifetime of 1.5 million kilometers, equivalent to a truck. The battery is produced at the Northvolt Ett gigafactory. Rolls-Royce launched its first all-electric car, the Shining, in China. The vehicle has a top speed of 250 km/h, a range of 585 km, and is priced at $8.

The used car market has experienced dramatic changes over the past twelve months. At one point, vehicle prices soared, mainly due to the limited production of new vehicles. However, as new vehicle inventories for many leading brands have now substantially recovered, the used market has begun to react, causing a collapse in prices. According to pricing data released by iSeeCars, the Tesla Model 3 has been at the forefront of this price collapse over the past six months. iSeeCars discovered that used vehicles have seen their prices shrink by 4.7% over the past six months and contract by 8.7% over the past twelve months. Leading this trend is the Tesla Model 3, which has experienced an average used price drop of 21.5% over the past six months—the fastest of any model from any automaker in the industry. Over the past twelve months, the Model 3 ranked as the fourth most rapidly depreciating vehicle, with prices declining by 19.3%.

Welcome a fresh, shiny new month as we kick off the last full month of Summer with news about Ford CEO, Jim Farley's comments on a recent shareholder call, Rivian's service center plans, and the reason NBA fans are helpling the adoption of Web 3 move forward.Ford CEO Jim Farley discusses battery and sales model plans in earnings callIn March the company announced plans to build 2M EVs annually by 2026. There have been many skeptics on how this could be achievedIn the July 21st call, Farley said the company has nearly everything it needs to make 600k vehicles in 2023 and 70% of what it needs to hit the 2026 goalFarly says the company will focus more on upgrading tech and motors and less on body-style upgrade similar to TeslaWhen discussing the franchise model, Farley said it puts Ford at a $2k per car disadvantage and will look to made-to-order model, and changing the way they market vehicles, pushing dealers to focus on delivery, education, and service to bridge the gapTake away: Body style…you mean like BMW. Also, dealers could do well to lean into delivery, education, and service. Is there a revenue model here?Rivian expands service centers in US and opens its first in Canada "Post-sale support is a consistent challenge for startup automakers, as it's always more demanding, resource-intense and costly than startup CEOs can conceive," said Karl Brauer, executive analyst for iSeeCars. "This is one of the reasons the franchise dealership model has worked so well for traditional automakers — it allows the automaker to design, engineer and build vehicles, while dealers focus on selling and servicing them," Brauer said.Rivian's South San Francisco service center has become more than a service location as customers now show up to see the vehicles and even test driveRivian has 21 service centers open in the US, in larger metros such as: Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas and Orlando. 6 more are planned by the end of the year as recent layoffs have not affected service operations. A second Bay Area service station will open soon in San JoseRivian is focusing on delivering 25k vehicles this year which is far less than it's production backlog of almost 100k vehiclesNBA puts on a full court press w NFTs as the most progressive Web 3 SportSpencer Dinwiddie says locker room convos less about cars, girls and more about blockchain, tech, and investmentThe NBA has built in collector mindset and lots of tech savvy owners like Steve Ballamer (Golden State Warriors and Mark Cuban, (Dallas Mavericks)Another major turning point was a partnership between the NBA, its players association, and Vancouver-based Blockchain developer Dapper Labs in 2019.
