Joining me today is Cristian G. Plascencia, co-founder of The Durable Athlete. Currently based out of Austin, Texas, Cristian's experience being a patient at a physical therapy facility led to what is now his life-long passion. I often say, "Either you are going to get the lesson that you need or the success that you want," and that personal mantra of mine further resonated as I talked with Cristian. Cristian talks all about how he classifies and defines "athletes," and we have a great discussion on both mobility and breathing. We also break down burn out and how to avoid letting that get the best of you. You'll hear us dive into:- The two components that define "mobility."- Breathing practices.- Burn out and how to push through. Don't forget to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts. About Today's Guest Cristian G. Plascencia is the the Co-Founder of The Durable Athlete and has spent spent his whole life trying to find the best equation to life to help maximize daily function and the longevity of our career. Starting at age 12 after a sports injury and realizing he enjoyed the setting, he spent 1000 hours at a physical therapy facility before leaving high school and heading into college. In college, he was able to intern with another physical therapy clinic out in Los Angeles County who exposed him to a holistic approach to health and fitness. It was the first time anyone had explained to him how nutrition, sleep, and our mental practices ultimately dictated the quality of everyday life as well as our physical performances. It was not too long after this realization and exposure to holistic health that he received a grant to conduct research on the effects of Whole Body Vibration techniques. This was a great exposure as it led him to eventually work with the strength and conditioning coach in assisting in the weight room with football and volleyball athletes. Cristian has since been able to travel and train with individuals like Earl Thomas, Andre Roberson, and Taylor Swift's reputation tour. Today's episode was a privilege to record, and coaches, it is such a pleasure to share this interview I conducted with Holly Perkins. This episode is an absolute must listen for FitPros and other entrepreneurs. Today we have my good friend Jonathan Munoz joining us on this all-new episode of the PT Profit Podcast. Jonathan is a coach who works with stage performers, and he talks us through how he assesses performers and what makes that different from assessing a standard gen-pop client. In this episode, we also talked about prioritizing performers' fitness over aesthetic goals and what to focus on while training. Sometimes instead of aiming to hit the choreography that they feel is not yet perfect for them, a performer might instead look at honing in on the intermediary steps that get you from Point A to Point B. As a former performer myself, recording this episode was a treat! There are so many misconceptions that performers tend to live by, so I was pumped to break those down with Jonathan. Performers don't just need to attend classes specific to their skill. Performers are athletes, and so few of them recognize that fact. Jonathan and I talk about what performers can do while in production and during their "off seasons." You'll get to hear Jonathan and I dive into:- Things that performers should be focusing and doing in the "off season."- What approach a trainer should take when training an arts performer.- What performers should focus in terms of strength training. About Today's Guest Jonathan Munoz has been in the fitness industry for eleven years, nurturing the ability to operate under different systems and frameworks to drive human performance. From the beginning of his career coaching young athletes to now training CEOs, young professionals, and Broadway performers, he has learned to optimize movement development and performance in a variety of disciplines. Jonathan strives to create a context in which an individual can develop resilience to face the demands of high performance by addressing smart training, conditioning, nutrition, stress, recovery, mobility, sport specificity, pre- and post-pregnancy, postural restoration, and more. Coaches, there are very few things that are certain in life, but one of those things are unfortunately taxes. As an entrepreneur, they can be particularly tricky because you aren't just dealing with your personal finances. You're also dealing with your business. Do you LLC? Are you a sole proprietor? What about S-Corp? Thankfully in this episode, I have John Briggs, Founder & CEO of Incite Tax & Accounting joining me. John is also the author of Profit First for Microgyms: A Simple System for Healthy Cashflow. A lot of marketers out there misrepresent their actual revenue, using smoke and mirrors to get on various Top Business lists and boost their image. We touch on the importance of looking back at your previous year to do a cash flow analysis to gauge how healthy your business is, and we take a deep dive into the not so sexy side of business. Are you still paying for things that you thought you canceled? Maybe even paying for duplicates of things, which are cutting into your revenue? John walks us through how to check. You don't want to miss this episode! You'll hear:- How to determine the health of your business.- The various types of businesses and what might be best for you.- Write offs!...and so much more. About Today's Guest John Briggs is the founder of Incite Tax & Accounting and the author of Profit First For Microgyms. His accounting firm has more gym clients than any other firm in the country as well as thousands of other client-driven businesses, and he is also an owner of a gym, GSL Fitness. Through all of this, he has learned that achieving a highly profitable business can be overwhelming, particularly with all the barriers and unknowns that new owners are forced to deal with. Entrepreneurs can quickly become stressed and burnt out, and often sadly give up on the mission that they set out for. In much the same way that the body needs blood to survive, a business needs cash, the lifeblood of the business, to stay healthy and to grow more resilient. To this end, John is a man on a mission to give entrepreneurs an actual work-life balance so they don’t get burned out. He helps them increase their cash immediately so they can have confidence in their choices and become financially resilient. And he talks the walk by battling against the traditional CPA culture of “overwork, underpaid, pay your dues and suffer while you’re at it” mentality by providing his team a healthy work life balance even during busy tax seasons. What's up, coaches? We're back today with another brand new episode of the PT Profit Podcast with guest Dr. Nick Torres, the Manual Man. In today's interview, we take a dive into manual physical therapy. Dr. Nick talks to me about the differences between manual therapy and more traditional physical therapy. We also talked about foam rolling and stretching and when/whether you should be doing it. You'll hear us talk about:- what "manual therapy" is.- topics such as foam rolling and its uses as well as active stretching.- the common red flags we should pay attention to when raised by our clients. About Today's Guest Dr. Nick Torres had always been curious, constantly questioning what others believed to be facts and searching beyond traditional physical therapy for a deeper way to heal. So when he found himself in the small town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Nick feared he wouldn’t find anything new to learn. Little did he know, it was there he would start his journey to become The Manual Man.It was in this small town that Nick happened to meet the Godfather of Manual therapy and founder of Institute of Physical Art Dr. Gregg Johnson. In the presence of Dr. Johnson, Nick witnessed pain cured with the slightest touch. Nick was humbled, and knew he had found the knowledge he was looking for - healing, with just your hands. He was invited to shadow Dr. Johnson as well as the other great therapists of Johnson & Johnson. For the greater part of a year, Nick watched their every move, learning how to heal with precision and intention. Equipped with his newfound knowledge for healing and inspiration, Nick returned to the streets of NYC. It was there that he met Andreas Saltas, the Bodmechanic. Dr. Saltas & Nick worked side by side, exploring and imbuing the full potential of breath and its impact on posture and pain in the human body. It was then that Nick had a revelation. It was only through the combination of breath, touch, and a constant thirst for knowledge that he could truly heal the world. He decided to step up and be what he was born to be: The Manual Man, committing himself to four cornerstone beliefs: LEARN, TEACH, LOVE, HEAL.Now, Dr. Nick has a practice in NYC, and travels the world teaching, healing, and learning. About Today's Guest: Today we're talking Merrily & Patrick Harpur about Merrily's book Mystery Big Cats. It's a book that covers the phenomenon of strange, almost spiritual encounters with what are sometimes called Anomalous Big Cats or British Big Cats. A branch on the cryptozoology tree that doesn't usually get the attention it should, because of the resemblance to known animals. But, then I learned that improvisation is a skill, and like any other form of entertainment, you can "get good" with practice. Then I learned that improv is not just entertaining, but also a powerful tool for the workplace. I had a fun, energy filled chat with renowned comedian and owner of Keeping it Human, Kathy Klotz-Guest. Check out this episode to find out how you can usher in creative problem solving and help your team with improv principles. Today's episode welcomes Romina Kostich from Skilled Strong to talk all about how running turned from a passion into a career after she started to injure herself while training. She became fascinated by the knowledge the physical therapists brought to her rehab sessions, noticing things like tension merely upon sight, and ultimately she ended up working for big box gyms before starting her own business. Skilled Strong focuses on utilizing strength training for runners, taking into account each client's personal fitness and injury history and other factors including lifestyle and age as opposed to the same handful of exercises shoved into the average runner's face via magazines and blog posts. You'll hear us discuss:- Differences between strength for runners and the running coaches.- How ribcage joints move and how to breath.- The biggest gaps that coaches miss to help improve runners. About Today's Guest Romina Kostich is a personal trainer specializing in Strength & Performance training for Runners. She started coaching in 2014 and now trains clients around the globe to run faster, breathe easier, and get stronger while decreasing their likelihood of injury. She is on a mission to raise the standard of how exercises are coached, programmed and progressed to get people the best results possible. Strength training is one of many tools she uses to facilitate running performance, improve posture, and restore lost range of motion throughout the body. Her lens for assessing, coaching, and programming movement has continues to evolve and adapt with her ongoing education. Through the application of these principles to strength and conditioning, she is set apart from other coaches in the industry who cannot get their clients the same results.
