About Today's Show Welcome to the first episode of #SenecaProud Season 5!  As in previous seasons, we launch Season 5 with an interview with Seneca College President, David Agnew. There's a lot that's changed in the year or so since President Agnew was on the podcast.  While last year we were still in lock-down, this year, in-person classes are in full swing, students and teachers fill the hallways,  and students are studying in the libraries.  But it's definitely not the same as it was pre-pandemic.  Technology has transformed much of the student administrative experience, and many more of our classes are completely flexible.  And that's most definitely not all. Also in this episode, we also talk about: 1.  How the Apple Store shopping experience inspired the Seneca registration experience, making it much more efficient and easy to navigate. 2.  The 3 Year Strategic Plan embraces the Polytechnic side of Seneca. 3.  The roll ChatGPT, and other AIs, might play in our daily lives in the very near future. About Today's Guest, President David Agnew David Agnew has been Seneca College President since July 2009, and under his leadership, Seneca has experienced record growth in enrollment and expanded its offerings in both undergraduate and graduate programs, and continues to be a national leader in innovation in education in Canada, and globally. One of the largest colleges in Canada, Seneca is growing its applied research, broadening international and corporate partnerships, investing in capital expansion and adopting an innovative academic direction to increase experiential, cross-disciplinary and flexible learning opportunities. Mr. Agnew was Secretary to the Cabinet and head of the public service in the Government of Ontario, Canada from 1992 to 1995 after serving as Principal Secretary to the Premier. In 1995, he led the Public-Private Partnerships Project and was seconded to Massey College at the University of Toronto where he was a Senior Resident. He was the President and CEO of UNICEF Canada, the first head of the organization recruited from outside the international development sector. As Principal for the consulting firm Digital 4Sight, he led the firm's global research initiative on Governance in the Digital Economy, an exploration of the impact of technology on government and democracy. In the co-operative sector, he was the Executive Vice-President and Corporate Secretary for the Credit Union Central of Ontario. Mr. Agnew was the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments, the national dispute resolution service for consumers and small businesses. Mr. Agnew's working life started in high school as a newspaper reporter in Toronto and he continued his journalism career in St. John's, Ottawa and Edmonton. He was the gold medallist when he graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.A. in political science. Following his studies, he was a Parliamentary Intern at the House of Commons of Canada. In 2012, Mr. Agnew received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to the community. Public Meetings for two Quadra island developments deferred until April

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - Public meetings for two controversial Quadra Island real estate developments have been deferred until this April, 2022, because of concerns about meeting in-person during a pandemic. The public meeting for the proposed Gowland Harbour Views development was scheduled for January 18th, 2022, and the rezoning meeting for Quadra Links Golf Course was to have occurred the following day. With less than a week to go, at the January 12th SRD Board meeting, Quadra Island Regional Director Jim Abram, said, “I have two items of business that are very timely. We need to deal with them today at this meeting because we have scheduled two public hearings in the next week.” Having already observed the meeting for one of these projects being delayed for years, Cortes Island Regional Director Noba Anderson responded, “ I certainly hear the concerns around this meeting wanting to have a good in-person component to it, but we are government and we do need to move forward on these things. So I'm just asking from staff on the advisability of this and our ability to hold public hearings following all of their required protocol. I don't know why [the meeting is being set back to] April, why wouldn't it be the earliest opportunity that Omicron allows.” SRD Senior Manager Thomas Yates expressed concerns about being able to notify the public about the cancellations in time. Abram replied that there was no need for concern, half of Quadra Island's population would be contacted through Facebook by the end of the day. As both of the proposed meetings were on Quadra, they fell under the jurisdiction of the SRD's Electoral Areas Services Committee (EASC). The following motions passed with unanimous support of all four Regional Directors (Jim Abram, Noba Anderson, Brenda Leigh and Gerald Whalley): “Abram/Whalley: SRD 32/22 - Due to the most resent Omicron variant outbreak of Covid 19, that the public hearing for the Schellinck development scheduled for January 18, 2022 be rescheduled to an available date in late April 2022, at 7pm at the Quadra Island Community Centre. All COVID protocols will apply. - carried” “Abram/Anderson: SRD 33/22 - Due to the most resent Omicron variant outbreak of Covid 19, that the public hearing for the Quadra Links development scheduled for January 19, 2022 be rescheduled to an available date in late April 2022, at 7pm at the Quadra Island Community Centre. All COVID protocols will apply - carried”

About Today's Show This episode is the first episode of #SenecaProud Season 4!  And we kick off the season with an interview with Seneca College President, David Agnew. When we last spoke with President Agnew, things were a lot different.  While Seneca College was completely closed with the exception of some key programs that absolutely required in-person teaching, there was still a lot going on.  The transformative project, Au Large, was ramping up. (for more on what that project was about, you can click here, or listen to some episodes from last season, which was just about entirely dedicated Au Large) Also in this episode, we also talk about: 1.  What students, staff, and faculty can expect when they return to campus.  Note:  Anyone returning to campus needs to show proof of vaccination. 2.  How technology is transforming some of the classes into "HyFlex" learning, allowing students to attend classes in whatever way is best for them. 3.  The latest TikTok trend.  (Hint:  It's a bones day!) About Today's Guest, President David Agnew With extensive experience in the public, private and non-profit sectors, David Agnew became the fifth president of Seneca in July 2009, and has held that position for 12 years. Under his leadership, Seneca has experienced record growth in enrollment and expanded its offerings in both undergraduate and graduate programs. How the ‘toilet paper wars' played out at our largest supermarket chainsAccelerated by Covid and the response to lightning-speed changes to customer shopping habits, there's a growing trend in retail to build business success through doing what's right for the customer. But is it counterintuitive to do the right thing instead of managing the bottom line? And how can we make sure that following an ethical North Star, won't take customer experience south? We talked to Wadim Schreiner, Head of Customer Insights & Customer 1st, to delve into how the infamous ‘toilet paper wars' played out at Australia/New Zealand's largest supermarket chains. Wadim's obsession with customers started well before ‘CX' (customer experience) and ‘UX' (user experience) became common acronyms and he's turned his deep understanding of consumer behaviour and data into his passion and profession, leading cross-functional teams at Woolworths NZ (Countdown), the country's largest food retailer (and subsidiary of the Australian Woolworths Group). Amazing customer experience when everything else is less than amazing 2020 saw the retail giant thrust into a ‘new normal' when people from across the businesses suddenly became ‘frontline workers'. “We all had a role to play, not only to keep the business running, but to care for our most vulnerable and anxious or even just plain upset people in the community. There was no recipe around how to operate in that kind of environment, but we worked fast and found new ways to create amazing customer experiences, when everything else seemed anything but amazing…” says Wadim. Countdown may not have had a recipe… but Wadim thinks they did already have the ingredients...All Covid did was underline the essentials…“None of this is new. A lot of people are saying that Covid is going to change the world (of customer experience). It isn't. A few things have been accelerated, but the fundamentals of great customer engagement haven't changed in thousands of years...”Customer feedback as the fuel of a healthy businessAn average experience is one that the customer expects to happen; for the right product to arrive at the right time, in the right condition. An awesome experience goes one step further and does something the customer doesn't expect. “That sounds easy enough…but so many still get the basics of an average experience wrong. Being awesome is hard work; and then the problem with being awesome is that the more awesome you become, the harder you have to work to be more awesome. All the time!” Luckily these days there are tools and platforms that make understanding customer expectations easier than ever before. These are critical in helping you take that one step beyond, and ensuring a consistent focus on what the customer is saying. “At Countdown, we run regular customer panels, bringing customers into the business so that leaders, marketers and the sales teams can hear what customers think, ask questions and discuss ideas. The conversations do not always go in the direction we want, but without that feedback, there is no way to improve what we do from the customer's perspective, rather than the business,” says Wadim. His belief around the importance of these sessions is pretty uncompromising: If you're not open to feedback, and don't have mechanisms in place to get feedback; if you don't know how to deal with that feedback - you don't stand a chance of succeeding with customers.Throw away the customer experience handbook! He goes on to say that Countdown doesn't have an official handbook for staff – and that the concept of ‘The Handbook' will often have the opposite effect than intended. “The problem with handbooks is that once people read them; they think ‘that's what I've got to go and do and nothing else.' But if you also give people access to regular customer feedback, irrespective of their role, then everyone sees what customers think and uses that as a point for improvement. That's the best handbook!”Frontline magic, with no rules! The now widely publicised “Quiet Hour” at Countdown supermarkets for vulnerable customers began at the request of just one customer who thought it would make shopping for her child with a learning disability easier. Listening to that one customer, one staff member was able to create a viral wave of support and positive media – a win-win for everyone!Similarly, during those early weeks of Covid lockdown, the customer voice was more important than ever. Talking to customers who were scared, screaming or crying was a wake up call to do things differently. “At Countdown, without a definitive ‘recipe card' for success, but knowing we all had the ingredients, we trusted our people to take the lead – even if that meant giving orders for free to keep people safe.”It's in those moments that Wadim says you'll find the magic...“People need to throw off the shackles of defined responsibility. This means they can actually focus on just doing what is right for the customer; without fear that there's going to be any repercussions.”That's a tough leap to take, and Wadim admits that they didn't always get it right, but every mis-step was an opportunity to learn and make it right for the customer. Don't judge by success, but by learningsWadim loves this quote from the late President and iconic humanitarian Nelson Mandela: “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” He wishes that the team could always hit that magic note, but acknowledges that we have to fail to learn to progress. “Countdown talks about ‘The power of 18,000' – that's 18,000 members of the team, every one of them knowing that they have a role to play in helping to make customer lives better every day. Giving them the autonomy to work on ideas and put them into action will unlock that potential in our business.”CX secretsWadim's final advice for creating memorable experiences is remarkably simple: “Keep focusing on it. In a world where there's so many things that you need to go and do - remember to focus on what your customers experience.” “Seek feedback; and allow negative feedback to motivate you to do better”“Don't accept the average. Push harder to achieve much more than average! Make awesome experiences your new average…”“Everyone should be exposed to customers. No exceptions. If you don't do this, you run the risk of making business decisions from the ivory tower and they're usually wrong.”To hear the full interview, head over to our Podcast.

As India gears up to deal with COVID-19, the country witnessed the highest rise in numbers in 24 hours, with the ministry of health and family welfare reporting 376 cases in a day. On 1 April, the country had over 1600 cases. That number may not appear to be too high for such a densely populated country and the Health Ministry has consistently maintained that we are at the local stage of transmission or stage 2 of the disease. However, ICMR or Indian Council of Medical Research has also said that India is currently testing upto only 38 percent of it's capacity. Currently, the testing norms remain highly restrictive. The question that is being asked repeatedly by public health experts is why aren't we ramping up our testing? How do we know these are the only positive cases when we simply don't test enough? Why is the government data on the testing samples or the sample kits all lacking transparency?
