SEAN TIMMS KEYBOARDIST AND SONGWRITER FOR AUSSIE PROGGERS UNITOPIA AND SOUTHERN EMPIRE WITH NEW LEAD SINGER SHAUN HOLTON ZOOM SPECIAL EVENT LIVE FROM AUSTRALIA! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Southern Empire is one of Australia's most exciting progressive rock bands.  Formed by keyboardist Sean Timms after the disbanding of Unitopia, Southern Empire will astound the listener with intricate yet catchy songs, amazing musicianship and a harder, more edgy sound perfectly suited to today's generation. For those who love the music of Dream Theater, IQ, Transatlantic, and Steven Wilson, this is the band you've been waiting for. After a 17-year involvement with Unitopia ended in 2013, Sean Timms had an album's worth of songs written, but no band to play and record them. AND NOW Unitopia is back! Drummer Chester Thompson and bassist Alphonso Johnson contributed their legendary talents as the new powerhouse rhythm section for Unitopia's latest album ‘Seven Chambers.' Both their résumés read like a who's who of the music industry with Chester having worked with Frank Zappa, Weather Report and over thirty years with Genesis as their touring drummer, whilst Alphonso has also worked with Weather Report as well as Santana, George Duke, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett and countless others both as studio and touring musicians. Sean Timms has been established as a session musician ever since he was a member of bands such as Hearts Of Fire in the 1980s. Dave Swift, Bass Man with the Jools Holland Big Band In 1991 Dave Swift heard that Jools Holland, ex-Squeeze keyboardist and TV presenter, was searching for a bassist who played both double bass and bass guitar. With the renowned bassist Pino Palladino then holding the “bass chair” in Holland's band, this was a bold move on the young bassist's part. The advantage from Swift's position was that he also played double bass and was already skilled in sight-reading. Swift auditioned, was hired on the spot, and has been Holland's bassist ever since.   Thanks to his talent and growing popularity, Swift is often invited at shows and camps. Recently, Swift was invited to appear at the annual Warwick Bass Camp in Germany in 2016 as a VIP guest, along with numerous popular bass luminaries from all over the world. The 2016 Warwick Bass Camp was held in Markeneukirchen, Germany, and had a roster of outstanding bassists. Attending professors included Alphonso Johnson, Felix Pastorius, Anthony Wellington and Steve Bailey. Swift was also a guest lecturer at the March 2016 Bass Guitar Show at Earls Court Olympia that filled the room to capacity.   Dave Swift is still an in-demand session musician outside of Holland's band and has also played double bass for American soul singer Gary U.S. Bonds, Ben E. He Didn't Have Control by David Garland When Bigfoot opened up for the Dead in 1968, it was bizarre. They were telling us, “When you walk down the staircase, don't put your hand on the rail.” We liked LSD, but we figured it was best if we didn't go out and play on that stuff. That was the big time for us. I had never met Bobby Weir until then. Eventually I had an opportunity to get involved with Weir, who I just love. Being in that band was the most fun time of my life ever. Weir let us all profit-share. Bobby Cochran was my friend. When Brent Mydland decided he didn't want to play with the Midnites, I got the opportunity. I showed up at rehearsal and they said, “OK, you're in.” Eventually meeting Alphonso Johnson, Billy Cobham, and Kenny Gradney was amazing. They're all great players. I have really good musical instincts. What I lacked in technique I just shut my eyes and went for it. With Bobby I would jump into the jams without any preconceived idea of what I was going to do. He'd have fragments of tunes, and we'd put them together. That's the beauty of jazz and that's the way jazz should be played. That band wasn't like the Dead, because of all the strong personalities. Bobby Weir didn't have control over that band.

Entre los numerosos artistas con quien Alphonso Johnson ha colaborado, podemos citar a: Chet Baker, Santana, Weather Report, The Crusaders, Bob Weir, Chuck Mangione, George Duke, En Vogue, Wayne Shorter, Sérgio Mendes, Tony Williams, Joe Williams, Gregory Hines, Neal Schon, Tom Coster, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Eric Gale, Ronnie Foster, Allan Holdsworth, Cannonball Adderley, Stanley Clarke, Woody Herman, Eddie Henderson, Flora Purim, Quincy Jones, Lee Ritenour, Phil Collins, Tom Scott, Steve Khan, The Whispers, John McLaughlin, Jeffrey Osborne, Sarah Vaughan, Dori Caymmi, Pino Daniele, Carl Anderson, Jeff Beck, Jan Hammer o Jimmy Page.

Playlists for all past Sets of Jazz Gumbo will be found at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca Some Highlights: The Benny Goodman Orchestra’s “Sing, Sing, Sing” had become a band and audience favorite by the time they performed at Carnegie Hall in 1938, and they closed a very successful show with the version that opens this Set. Drummer Gene Krupa drives the 8-minute number, but it’s full of great horn flourishes and solos, by Goodman on clarinet, Babe Russin on tenor, Harry James on trumpet, more of Benny, then Jess Stacy of piano. It’s brilliant! What a show that must’ve been. George Duke wrote and arranged “Be Cool” and leads a group of All-Stars for another rousing live performance, this time at Montreux. Many of these musicians had never performed together, and according to all accounts, the rehearsals were horrible. But the live show brought the magic. Solos by Duke and by flautists Hubert Laws and Bobbie Humphrey, with a rhythm section that includes Billy Cobham on drums, Alphonso Johnson on bass and with Bob James conducting. Bennie Maupin’s “The Jewel in the Lotus” is one of those very special albums with a mood all its own, perfect for middle-of-the-night magic and mellowness. It features the most earthy of acoustic bassists in Buster Williams. Thanks to my Polish family for the Możdżer, Danielsson & Fresco cd. I don’t know any of them. Their tune here is shimmering, sizzling & sweet. I’ll be re-visiting this album soon. Ray Bryant delivers a rapturous solo piano performance. Kenny Garrett is his usual driving, dynamic self. And War, probably my favorite group from my teens, shows you why, with their natural, funk and roots sound. That's not even the half of it! I could go on and on and on. But I’ll leave it with you. Thrive! Kirby

Prior to Santana, Rolie played with a group called William Penn and his Pals while attending Cubberley High School in Palo Alto, California, circa 1965. A year after graduating from high school in 1965, Rolie joined Carlos Santana and others to form the Santana Blues Band, which was later shortened simply to Santana. As a founding member of Santana, Rolie was part of the band's first wave of success, including an appearance at the Woodstock Music and Art Festival in 1969 and central roles in several hit albums. He is perhaps best known for being their original lead vocalist, with his voice driving such classic Santana hits as Black Magic Woman (US #4), Oye Como Va, No One To Depend On and Evil Ways. He also became well known for his unique sound and groundbreaking work on the Hammond B3 organ, with classic solos on many of the aforementioned hits. However, persistent differences with Carlos Santana regarding the musical direction of the band led Rolie to leave the band at the end of 1971. In 1973 Rolie joined a new band with ex-Santana guitarist Neal Schon; this became Journey. Starring in a lineup that featured Schon, Aynsley Dunbar, George Tickner, and Ross Valory, he was keyboardist for the band's first six albums. On Journey and Look into the Future, he was lead vocalist, and on Next he shared those duties with guitarist Neal Schon. After Steve Perry joined the band in 1977, Rolie sang co-lead vocals on several songs on the albums Infinity, Evolution, and Departure. After leaving Journey in 1980, Gregg released several solo albums, including the eponymous Gregg Rolie in 1985. This album featured the song “I Wanna Go Back,” which later became a hit for Eddie Money, and included contributions from Carlos Santana, Peter Wolf, Neal Schon, and Craig Chaquico. A second solo effort, Gringo, was released in 1987. Rolie formed The Storm in 1991 with Steve Smith (replaced by Ron Wikso after the recording of the first album) and Ross Valory of Journey. The band also included Josh Ramos (whose guitar style resembles that of Neal Schon) and Kevin Chalfant (whose voice resembles that of Steve Perry). Similar to his work with Journey and Steve Perry, Rolie played keyboards and was a co-lead vocalist on several tracks of the band's first, eponymous, album, which hit #3 on the Billboard albums chart and spawned the Top Ten single “I've Got A Lot To Learn About Love.” Despite this success, their second album, recorded in 1993, was shelved, due to the industry's shifting focus to favor rap and alternative music audiences. It finally saw limited release in 1996, and in 1998, Rolie and other former members of Santana, including Neal Schon, briefly reunited as Abraxas Pool, releasing one eponymous album. When Schon left to lead a re-formed Journey later that year, Rolie and Ron Wikso began work in 1999, on a Gregg Rolie solo CD, titled “Roots”, which eventually led to the forming of the Gregg Rolie Band. Besides Rolie and Wikso, “Roots” featured appearances by Neal Schon, Alphonso Johnson, Dave Amato, Adrian Areas, Michael Carabello. The Gregg Rolie Band saw Kurt Griffey taking over guitar duties and the addition of Wally Minko as a second keyboardist. They recorded a live CD at Sturgis called “Rain Dance”, which was released in 2009. #Santana #Journey
