"I was examining this aspect through the lens of Barbie as colonizer,” comenta Aguiló-Pérez, “What I did not realize, however, was that a completely different transaction was presented in one of my participant's encounters, one in which Barbie became an instrument of resistance against colonizing practices" En esta conversación, Aguiló-Pérez, Martínez, Pecci Zegri y Herlihy-Mera investigan el fenómeno colonialista de Barbie, analizando cómo su aspecto comercial intenta (y a veces falla) manipular la epistemología y las nociones de belleza en Puerto Rico. President Trump's chaotic rollout and partial rollback of tariffs has roiled financial markets and confused many allies, both domestically and internationally. Although he temporarily calmed bond markets by announcing a 90-day pause on his misleadingly labeled "reciprocal tariffs," the uncertainty he created continues. Meanwhile, China has responded to the 145% tariffs on their imported goods by imposing retaliatory tariffs on American products and halting exports of rare earth minerals. To help us makes sense of the mess, Kara talks to three experts:  Raj Bhala is a professor at the University of Kansas School of Law and one of the foremost scholars on international trade law. He is also the author of Trade War: Causes, Conduct, and Consequences of Sino-American Confrontation. Bill Cohan is an M&A banker-turned-financial journalist and a co-founder of Puck. He's the author of a number of books, including Power Failure: The Rise and Fall of an American Icon. Catherine Rampell is a nationally syndicated columnist at The Washington Post who specializes in economics, politics, and public policy. She's a special correspondent for PBS Newshour and she will soon anchor and co-host of MSNBC's The Weekend. This episode was recorded on Wednesday April 9th. Questions? Comments? Henry Ford and The Ford Motor Company

As far as American Icons go it probably doesn't get much bigger and recognizable than Henry Ford and Ford Motors. Not the inventor of the automobile, that credit goes to Carl Benz (go back and listen to that episode) but Henry developed what would become the modern automotive industry as we know it. Assembly lines were a thing, just not with cars until Henry decided to use them to mass produce the Model T. His first mass produced car took the nation by storm and at one point 1/2 of all individuals who learned how to drive did so on a Model T. Where Henry excelled at making affordable reliable vehicles he fell short on personal skills, treatment of his workers, and being a father. He even almost caused the downfall of his company by not being able to tear himself away from his precious Model T and modernize with companies like General Motors who came along and challenged Ford for the top spot and for a while took the crown. Through the "Pony Wars" where each manufacturer took turns one upping each other on Horsepower, to the battle to make the most economical car when the gas shortages hit. The story of Ford is fascinating to say the very least.Side note: Prof Chris was battling through a sinus infection which is why he sounds so sexy. Support the show

Europe Without Borders: The Rise and Partial Fall of the Schengen Zone. A Conversation with Isaac Stanley-Becker.

In this week's episode of then & now, we are joined by Dr. Isaac Stanley-Becker, a reporter on intelligence and national security issues for The Washington Post, to examine the rise and partial fall of the Schengen Zone amid ongoing and polarizing debates regarding immigration policy. Through the lens of his dual expertise as a journalist and a historian, Isaac explores the origins and historical progression of the Schengen Zone in his recent publication, Europe Without Borders. Established in 1985, the Schengen Zone was created as an area facilitating free movement across Europe in the aftermath of World War II, symbolizing European unity and liberal internationalism. However, contemporary discourse frequently associates it with Europe's migration crisis, fueling a backlash against globalization. While the Schengen Zone has significantly transformed European society, it has also consistently excluded non-Europeans, particularly migrants of color from former colonies of the Schengen member states. Isaac concludes with the assertion that the Schengen Zone is currently facing a precarious situation. Highlighting the rising prevalence of illiberal populism and anti-immigrant fury in both Europe and the United States, he posits that if Europe can develop and implement a more effective burden-sharing system for asylum seekers, the viability of the Schengen Zone could be maintained in a more coherent manner.Isaac Stanley-Becker is a staff writer for The Washington Post, focusing on intelligence and national security. With a PhD in history from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes scholar, he has been an investigative reporter on the national staff and reported from across Europe. He recently published Europe without Borders: A History (Princeton University Press 2025), an investigation into the origins and development of the Schengen area of Europe. He was also part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2024 for “American Icon,” a series exploring the role of the AR-15 in American life.Further ReadingThe Schengen Area2015: The year of Europe's refugee crisis

The world is shutting its borders to immigrants. Yesterday, we featured a conversation with Laurie Trautman who dates the Covid crisis of 2020 as the tragic moment when the entire world closed its doors to immigrants. But even in the internationalist EU, border policy is tightening. According to Washington Post's Isaac Stanley-Becker, author of the new book Europe Without Borders: A History, borders have emerged as a critical geopolitical flashpoint within the EU. Against this backdrop, Stanley-Becker examines the 40-year history of Europe's Schengen Agreement, which eliminated internal borders between participating European nations. He explores how this landmark agreement, signed in 1985 in a small Luxembourg town, represented both a practical economic arrangement and a bold experiment in post-war European integration. Stanley-Becker reveals the complex negotiations between France and Germany that drove the initiative, as well as how the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 dramatically reshaped the agreement's implementation. He also delves into current challenges to Schengen, including the rise of populist parties, immigration pressures, and Germany's recent decision to reinstate border controls. Through this historical lens, Stanley-Becker offers valuable context for understanding how Europe's experiment with borderless travel relates to an illiberal world now shutting its borders to immigrants.Isaac Stanley-Becker is staff writer at the Washington Post focusing on intelligence and national security. He has been an investigative reporter on the national staff and reported from across Europe. He earned his PhD in history from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes scholar. Perhaps no American landscape is as iconic as the rainbow rocks of Arizona's Grand Canyon. Yet, as the geographer Yolonda Youngs argues, the Grand Canyon many people think they know is but one sliver of the story of the wider Grand Canyon as a historical and physical place.  In Framing Nature: The Creation of an American Icon at the Grand Canyon (U Nebraska Press, 2024), Youngs, a Cal State - San Bernardino professor, tracks the history of the canyon from the perspective of spatial, physical, and visual culture studies. In doing so, she shows how the ways we think of a place shape how humans use that place. In the case of the Grand Canyon, that means the "classic" perspective that people recognize of the canyon from the south rim, means that changes to the riparian landscape hundreds of feet below often go unnoticed. Wider changes in American visual culture, including the development of postcards, film, and television, also shaped tourist expectations - visitors expecting to see rapids, for instance, rather than the fern groves and waterfalls which also form critical parts of the wider Grand Canyon environment. As the cliche goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and in the example of the Grand Canyon, those same storytelling pictures also shape use in ways that continue up through the present day. Two-time Emmy and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald, interviewed Stephanie Stuckey.  The Chair of Stuckey's.  A pecan snack and candy company based in Wrens, GA. She is also the author of “Unstuck: Reviving an American Icon.”  Stuckey's growth lies in their partnership with almost 5,000 retailers nationwide that sell their delicious pecan snacks and candies. Questions About the Company's History and Legacy: Stuckey's has such a rich history. Can you share what initially inspired the rebirth of the brand after all these years? How does social media on LinkedIn work? The Power of Marketing and Branding. What strategies did you implement to turn Stuckey's around and bring it back to the forefront of the market? Acquiring a pecan manufacturing facility was a major step. How has owning this facility impacted your product offerings and business growth? What role does innovation play in the resurgence of Stuckey's, especially in terms of product development and marketing? Questions About Branding and Marketing: Stuckey's is known for its nostalgic appeal. How do you balance honoring that nostalgia while also appealing to modern consumers? How important has social media and digital marketing been in the rebirth of Stuckey's? Questions About Leadership and Vision: What's your long-term vision for Stuckey's, and how do you plan to continue the momentum you've built? What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs wanting to start their own business? Questions About Partnerships and Community: How have partnerships with retailers and other brands contributed to the comeback of Stuckey's? Stuckey's has deep roots in Georgia. How important has the local community been in your company's resurgence? Can you share any upcoming collaborations or new product launches that will be part of Stuckey's comeback story?   It all started with a borrowed Model A Ford and a $35 loan   With that, W.S. “Sylvester” Stuckey, Sr. founded Stuckey's as a roadside pecan stand along Highway 23 in Eastman, GA in 1937. With that Ford that he retrofitted to haul pecans and the loan (from his grandmother), W.S. drove around the countryside and bought pecans from local farmers to sell at his stand, along with local honey and souvenirs. His wife, Ethel, added her delicious homemade candies – southern delicacies like pralines, Divinities, and our iconic Pecan Log Rolls.   Through grit and determination, the Stuckeys grew the stores from these humble beginnings to a roadside empire. At its peak in the 1960s, the little pecan company had become an integral part of the American road trip. It boasted 368 stores in over 30 states, each offering kitschy souvenirs, clean restrooms, Texaco gas, and of course, our famous candies.   Stuckey's also owned a candy plant in Eastman to allow for larger production of sweet treats, a trucking company, and a sign company that produced the 4,000 Stuckey's billboards that dotted America's highways. Stuckey's merged with Pet Milk Co. in 1964 to add capacity and capital for the company to grow.   Decline and Rebound   W.S. Stuckey, Sr. died in 1977, the same year that Illinois Central Industries, a Chicago conglomerate, bought Pet Milk Co., and they began to close Stuckey's stores across the country. Stuckey's fell into a decline until 1984 when W.S. “Billy” Stuckey, Jr., son of the founder and a five-term Congressman from the 8th District of Georgia, acquired Stuckey's and began to turn the company around.   Under Billy's helm, the Stuckey's Express concept – or a store within a store – was launched, and the company expanded to over 115 franchises in 17 states. The Eastman candy plant continued operations by a third-party contractor but was shuttered in 2009 during the Recession, although Stuckey's branded candies continued to be produced by outside vendors.   In November of 2019, Ethel “Stephanie” Stuckey, Billy's daughter, took over as CEO of Stuckey's. In August of 2020, Stuckey's acquired Front Porch Pecans, a pecan snack company that sells to domestic and foreign markets, including grocery channels in the Southeast U.S. With this merger, Stuckey's gained management support with R.G. Lamar as new President to run Stuckey's with Stephanie.   In January of 2021, Stephanie and R.G. acquired a pecan manufacturing facility in Wrens, Georgia to drive growth of the company through snack and candy making. Later that year, they added a third equity owner, Ted Wright, a marketing professional based in Atlanta.   Today, Stuckey's is making a comeback, thanks to reinventing the brand as a pecan snack and candy company. They are once again making the delicious products that Ethel first made in her country kitchen, and Sylvester sold at his roadside stand. There are still 13 original blue roof Stuckey's stores in operation. These stores are not owned or operated by the parent corporation but are licensed to sell our products and remain an important part of our past and story. Stuckey's growth lies in our partnership with almost 5,000 retailers nationwide, including Hobby Lobby, Bealls, Ingles, Wawa, TravelCenters of America, and others, that sell our delicious pecan snacks and candies. The company also maintains an online store, a fundraising business, and a corporate gift program. In August of 2022, R.G. Lamar, Jr. transitioned to the role of CEO, and Stephanie Stuckey assumed the role of Chair. They continue to run the day-to-day operations of Stuckey's, with R.G. driving internal growth and Stephanie being the external face of the brand. From a humble pecan stand to a nationwide brand, the future looks bright for Stuckey's. Look for our products soon in a store near you — and be part of our comeback journey! #SHMS, #STRAW, #BESTSupport the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
