In this conversation we speak to director, Margot Bowman. We discuss her love for animation, her approach to documentary and why club culture sits at the heart of everything she does. This episode is sponsored by the Gate+ and produced by Jack Kirkwood Hosted by directors, Craig Bingham and Ozzie Pullin.Born and raised in London, Margot Bowman uses the medium of film in all its forms, as a creative vehicle for telling powerful human stories, centred on emotional truths.Margot's visually striking work is textured with thoughtful animation, CGI or archive that's woven amongst her poetic live-action. This medium-agnostic approach to storytelling creates a rich visual language that reframes the familiar so that audiences connect with the story at hand in new and original ways.Growing up in Camden, Margot is consistently inspired by her home city's legacy of club culture, creativity, freedom of expression and community. Formerly the Creative Director of Boiler Room, she has since directed commercials for major clients including Nike, Dr Martens, Carhartt, Space NK and Byredo, with narrative and documentary commissions from the likes of Channel 4, The Tate, Dazed and NOWNESS.Most recently, she co-directed Amazon Prime's highly anticipated documentary feature The Tour, a 90-minute film about the relaunch of Victoria's Secret's iconic fashion show, reimagined through the lens of 20 diverse female artists from around the world. Her documentary Coming Home premiered at SXSW 2022, was awarded Best Short at the prestigious Palestine Cinema Days, and was shortlisted for the International Documentary Association's films of the year. These powerful experiences in documentary are built off her natural ability to connect with people and bring their stories to screen with intimacy and style.Moving forward, Margot is intent on creating storytelling-driven work that sits at the heart of the cultural conversation. Her diverse creative background and innate understanding of the zeitgeist, accelerates her lyrical storytelling to create work that is contemporary, informative and delivered to audiences in a rich visual world that resonates in pop culture and beyond.

All the fragrances are developed in Grasse, France and the products are crafted in Mexico. James started his career in retail, then went on to become one of the UK's top tanning artists, working with celebrities, models and customers who wanted a healthy glow, applied using the best products. This lead to James creating his own brand using all the experience he amassed during his career. ‘Self Glow by James Read' has a 'skincare-first' philosophy and combines natural cacao with high-performance active and fermented ingredients. The formulas work with all skin tones and skin types. As we discussed during our conversation, I was a self-tan novice, but I started using James' ‘Sunblush' tan mist once a week - and it's SO easy to apply, literally a few sprays on my face and I'm done. Thanks for joining me for the ‘Man in the Mirror' podcast. My guest this week Arnaud Poulain, the Founder and Artistic Director of French fragrance brand Les Eaux Primordiales. I recently spent the morning with Arnaud, firstly listening to him being interviewed by my journalist friend Suzy Nightingale at Harrods and then the two of us got to spend some time recording this week's episode at a nearby hotel.Arnaud was in London to talk about the new Harrods exclusive fragrance ‘Ambre Supermassive', which he has created alongside his longtime perfumer, teacher and friend Amelie Bourgeois. Arnaud is unusual in that he is a trained perfumer, as well as the brand founder. He came to perfumery in his early twenties after studying engineering and embraced the new career with a real energy and fervour. He's achieved a huge amount in that short time, working first for Byredo and then eventually setting up his own brand in 2015.Les Eaux Primordiales is the sum of all his education and experience. There's elements of his engineering background, his love of architecture, his need to make things with his hands and of course his desire 'to dream'. All of this is located in the brand's own ‘domaine', and chateau in Northern France. It's an atelier where everything to do with Les Eaux Primordiales happens - the creation, bottling, the carpentry, the point of sale and metalwork.

Ben Gorham has had a particularly interesting journey to entrepreneurship. Having spent his entire young life pursuing a career in basketball, it may come as a surprise that he ended up creating a super successful luxury and fragrance brand. But Ben's ambitions to play basketball were stifled by a technicality in international contracts, cutting his professional career short. Then, by a chance meeting Ben turned to an entirely different industry. Since setting the groundwork for a fragrance business, experimenting with smells through candle making out of his own kitchen, Ben's obsession has grown into a massive luxury brand found in huge retail stores across the globe. Nordstrom has had a lot of success doing business with BYREDO for a long time now and we're super excited that he's come to Seattle to visit and talk with our teams about even more growth. And since he was in the building, I asked him to come into my office to chat with me on the podcast. After my conversation with Ben, we're going to do something that we always talk about at the end of every episode, but we've yet to actually feature on the show, which is to address some of the negative feedback that we sometimes get. Former employee and long-time customer of Nordstrom, Vicki Redding, has agreed to come on the show and share her perspective on the ways in which Nordstrom has changed—and not for the better. When Ben Gorham of Byredo and Monique Rodriguez of Mielle Organics sold the businesses they spent years building, the financial milestone was just the culmination of more meaningful professional journeys that began with a clear sense of purpose. Background: Beauty founders Ben Gorham of fragrance label Byredo, and Monique Rodriguez of hair care brand Mielle Organics, both took their businesses from indie beauty darlings with cult followings to high-profile exits to major conglomerates: Byredo sold to Spanish luxury giant Puig for $1 billion in 2022, while Procter & Gamble bought Mielle Organics earlier this year. But the two founders didn't start their businesses with the sole focus of cashing in quickly. “We live in a climate where expectations are that you start a company and you build it to great heights, and then you sell it, and you make lots of money. And this is how we define success stories,” said Gorham. “For me, for many years, it was really about just the craft. It was really about the product. It was really about learning how to operate a business.” As Rodriguez learned after building a loyal customer base, a sale impacts many other stakeholders. “When you build a brand in the Black community, it's not my brand, it's their brand,” said Rodriguez. Yet she doesn't downplay the personal importance of the exit. “It's a true testament to — especially as a Black woman, a woman of colour — what we build is very valuable… I didn't grow up seeing this. So to accomplish just having a conversation [with investors, including P&G] was rewarding for me,” she said. This week on The BoF Podcast, Gorham and Rodriguez sit down with Priya Rao, executive editor of The Business of Beauty, to share how they navigate entrepreneurship and success in a conversation from The Business of Beauty Global Forum 2023.Key Insights:Rodriguez started Mielle to fill a void in hair care that she and other Black customers faced. “As a consumer myself, I saw that there was a lack of relatability. I thought that there was a lack of education. I felt that there was no brand that understood my needs as a natural hair consumer,” she said.Gorham also sought to fill an underserved market with Byredo. “The idea of luxury and the culture of luxury didn't speak to people that looked like me or grew up like me or came from my culture [with a Canadian father and Indian mother, growing up in Sweden]. So I set out to kind of redefine what that could mean as a brand,” said Gorham. When her start-up was ready to explore being part of a larger company, Rodriguez said it was important that she was clear what she wanted — and didn't want — from Mielle's suitor. “As you find a partner, it's like a marriage, right? And you don't want to get divorced… So it was really important that my partners understood where we were trying to go and did not want to disrupt what we knew we were already good at,” she said.Being part of a larger company and maintaining an entrepreneurial spirit are not mutually exclusive… My mother grew up in a garage in Mumbai. To say that the financial milestone or the monetary aspect wasn't important… would be a lie.” said Gorham. “Selling kind of implies that I wouldn't be there or that I would exit… even though that's the mechanical trigger of the transaction, my role is still intact. I continue to work night and day as I've done over this journey,” he said. Additional Resources:The Business of Beauty Global Forum: Where Will Growth Come From? Hosted on Acast. What's Contemporary Now?

British makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench has been challenging our perceptions of beauty and creativity for the past decade. She attributes her unconventional approach to beauty, one that escapes commonality and mainstream aesthetics and paves the way for bold innovation, to her family's background in engineering and problem-solving. Spurred by a face painting side hustle, her nontraditional rise in the industry saw her take on pivotal creative roles—such as brand ambassador, creative director, and global beauty director—for luxury brands, such as Tom Ford, YSL, Christian Louboutin, Burberry Beauty, Byredo, and today, beauty curator for Off White. In 2022, she launched her makeup brand, ISAMAYA, an evolving line of progressive beauty products entrenched in the zeitgeist. In this episode, Isamaya shares with Christopher Michael her perspectives on cultivating creative audacity and innovation in beauty. Some may consider her work subversive, yet she sees it as contextual and impulse-driven—LIPS, the brand's penis-shaped lipstick, was influenced by conversations around gender and sexuality. What's contemporary now? Isamaya believes it's time for people to acknowledge and accept that having a different opinion, preference, or approach is okay. “Just leave people alone and let them get on with their lives.” Episode Highlights: Creative audacity: Isamaya attributes her creative edge and audacity to her upbringing—having grown up in a family of engineers and creatives. Penis-shaped lipstick: Isamaya is often driven by impulse; she's very receptive to what's happening around her, so it's no surprise the discussions around gender, nudity, and sexuality have indirectly influenced her work. However, more than anything, LIPS was a logical decision. Global beauty director: Is it challenging working for brands? “It's about having different experiences,” Isamaya says. Although she values the creative freedom of having her own brand, she enjoys the collaborative aspect and various parameters of working with other brands. Side hustle: She worked her way up from face painting to semiprofessional body painting to makeup artistry. Product design: Isamaya describes her love/hate relationship with product design and how it is a part of her path to success. Favorite clients? Junya Watanabe and Tom Brown—to name a few. Isamaya looks for a strong sense of self and a willingness to push creative boundaries when partnering with designers or brands; to find new territory while maintaining a concise brand aesthetic and philosophy. Advice: “If you're passionate about something and you want to do it, do it. You only live once!” What's next? Collaborations, new makeup collections, and a documentary about global beauty aesthetics and ideals. What's contemporary now? “Just leave people alone and let them get on with their lives.”

Ever wonder how certain fragrances make their ways into different publications' ‘Best Of' lists or editorial roundups? Is it determined by the quality of the product OR perhaps just the quality of the PR team behind it? Today, Refinery29's Sr. Beauty Editor Amanda Mitchell is answering all the hard questions. As a beauty editor, Amanda is not only constantly testing new products, she's also trying all the latest beauty treatments, procedures, and experiences. Amanda shares her thoughts on press events/experiences vs. influencer ones (/including some piping hot takes on editors vs. influencers), but we also get into a much more important conversation surrounding these types of events: inclusion (or... lack thereof). Amanda discusses this industry-wide issue as well as how she's helped change it, plus she shares her process for curating her own editorial rounds ups and tells us what she's loving most right now. Oh and PS — if you didn't know, Amanda is single so slideeee into those DMs. FRAGS MENTIONED: Phlur Tangerine Boy, Ourside Nostalgia, Ellis Brooklyn Vanilla Milk, Lake & Skye: 11 11, Midnight 07; Betsey Johnson EDP, Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace, YSL Black Opium, Mugler Angel, Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream, Laura Mercier hand cream, Chanel No. 5, Glosser You, Eilish 2, Eilish 1, Moodeaux, Ourside Dusk, Kayali, Byredo, Kilian Love Don't Be Shy, Le Labo Santal 33, Dossier, Kierin Pier NY, The Maker Fire, Malin Goetz x Kith Vapor, Maya Njie Tobak SHOP THIS EPISODE: https://shopmy.us/collections/108488 FOLLOW AMANDA: @lochnessamanda FOLLOW PERFUME ROOM: @perfumeroompod (IG) @emma_vern (TT)

Isamaya Ffrench on creating beauty that 'people can step into and feel inspired"

Nearly every turn in Isamaya Ffrench's career was unexpected. Ffrench grew up in a family of engineers and didn't ascribe to the glamorous rituals her mother and grandmother practiced when she was a child. Her introduction to beauty came by way of discovering Kevyn Aucoin's iconic beauty book “Making Faces.” But even after studying that book cover to cover, Ffrench still didn't have dreams of becoming a makeup artist, content creator or founder of her namesake beauty brand — all of which she is now. In fact, Ffrench danced professionally for 15 years. But a colleague at the contemporary theatrical performance group Theo Adams Company put her up for a body painting job at i-D magazine, knowing Ffrench painted faces at children's parties. While unplanned, that gig planted the seeds for Ffrench's future career. “I was hired to do a very specific thing,” said Ffrench on the most recent episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. “I was using clay and mixed media and turning these models into Demigods. It was all very creative, but there was another makeup artist on set who had been booked to do the beauty because I guess I was a wildcard. I just remember there was this moment when I was washing up my really dirty, grubby brushes in the sink with washing liquid. I had big paintbrushes and sponges and all this grimy stuff. I looked over at this makeup artist who sat there with her beautiful kit laid out looking very clean. I was like, ‘Hold on a sec, why am I not doing that job? I should be doing that job, as well.'” Ffrench continued to book editorial jobs, all while refining her subverted beauty aesthetic. Her work landed her ambassador and creative director posts at YSL Beauté, Tom Ford Beauty, Burberry and Byredo, which proved to be fortuitous primers to launching her own brand, Isamaya, in June. “I don't ever think I planned to do my own brand, or not until very, very recently, probably because I was very happy doing it for other people. … And then I sort of thought, ‘Well, maybe there are some things I would like to do for myself that brands wouldn't let me do because they have their own language,'” she said. Since debuting Isamaya this summer, Ffrench has leaned into the drop model, first launching the Industrial collection, a BDSM-inspired offering. Wild Star, a rhinestone cowgirl-esque drop, debuted Thursday with L.A. pop-ups supporting the collection.

I'm talking about Ami Cole products finally arriving in the UK (whoop!), thinking about buying the new Liquid Lipstick Vinyl range from Byredo and discussing the value of It Girl Lori Harvey's makeup artist James Kaliardos. James is the original multi-hyphenate, a major player in beauty, and for some reason, when Lori referred to him as simply her 'makeup artist', during her recent get ready with me for Vogue's YouTube, I got a tiny bit upset. So, I decided to create an episode - and a newsletter, and a TikTok - to shed some light on James' impact on the worlds of fashion, beauty and art.
