The notion that "fire knows no borders" continues to ring true this summer. From Jasper, Alta. to Athens and the American West Coast... wildfires have left their marks on so many communities – and on the minds and memories of those who call them home. Viet Thanh Nguyen is a self-described scholar of memory. Much of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author's work examines how trauma shapes our narrative and emotional recollection. He speaks with Piya Chattopadhyay about his latest kids book Simone, which tells the story of a young girl and her mom fleeing home in the face of fire.

We all have musicians that we wish everyone else knew about. THAT person who deserves a wider audience, but life circumstances didn't allow for it. Knowledge of that musician seems to be like the secret handshake into a special club. Nick Drake was one of those people until a TV car advertisement that used his music got more people curious....thank goodness. Judee Sill's music is not likely to be used in a car ad. Welcome to episode 116 of See Hear Podcast. When people talk about the musicians of the American West Coast in the early 70s, they talk about Jackson Browne, Carole King, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, CSN or Bonnie Raitt. Few people beyond the faithful have spoken about Judee Sill. This leaves fans of Sill scratching their heads because even among those more well known musicians, they recognise Judee was a master songwriter, orchestrator and arranger. Her early life was one filled with abuse, drug use, prostitution, armed holdups, and prison time. It's amazing to think that the lady who lived that life wrote some of the most beautiful music of the pop era (I'll stand on my soapbox and suggest The Kiss is one of the most beautiful songs ever written – change my mind). She mixed country and Bach and gospel into one beautiful package. Sounds unworkable? Check out her albums and get back to me. A new documentary was released this year about Judee called Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill. This episode of See Hear features guests associated with the film. Kerry, Tim and I chat with one of the two directors of the film, Brian Lindstrom. He describes the process it took to make this great film, working with Judee's relatives, the nature of creativity, what her music has meant to current performers, and a lot more. This could easily have been a dark film (and it has its moments), but it really is a celebration of Judee's life and work. Brian and his co-director Andy Brown have made a wonderful tribute to an artist that will hopefully now find a wider audience. But wait.....there's more. The film's music supervisor is Pat Thomas. Pat has quite a few strings to his bow – drummer, album reissue supervisor, historian and author. He joins me for a discussion on the role of a music supervisor in film and specifically what he did for this documentary. Kerry, Tim and I are hugely grateful for the time Brian and Pat gave to us. Give this a listen, then absorb yourself in the albums of Judee Sill. As of May 2024, the film is streaming on Prime, in North America only (grrrr), but I am informed that moves are being made to get a wider distribution for the film....and of course you can always get the DVD anywhere in the world. Thanks for your patience to wait a week longer than usual for this new episode! This episode is actually a very special one as I have the pleasure to welcome Mogg Morgan as my co-host. Mogg has been the publisher of Mandrake Press for many years and recently we aired an episode of the show where he talked about himself and his work. This time we will be having a wonderful discussion with our guest, author and practitioner Nikki Wyrd on quite a few pretty fascinating topics. Nikki holds a degree in ecology and has written ‘The Book of Baphomet' together with Julian Vayne in 2012 which was published with Mandrake Press, she has contributed to many periodicals and collections of poetry and authored theses and academic papers on subjects such as psychedelic culture and magical thinking and philosophy. In this episode Nikki will let us know how the path was laid out in front of her with her great-grandmother and grandmother reading fortune-teller cards and using a crystal ball. She will tell our audience how she cultivated an interest in mythology and religious and philosophical belief systems as well as in psychedelic mushrooms, Carlos Castaneda's and Robert Anton Wilson's work and how she soon found these topics intertwined in a perfect match. As Nikki was the head of the British Isle section of the IOT for quite some time we will go deep into concepts of Chaos Magick, discuss Crowley's role within it, share some anecdotes about Simon, the Goth, and touch upon ‘Liber Null & Psychonaut' by Peter Caroll on the way. Our guest will also elaborate on women in magick in general and within the IOT specifically, shed some light on the grade system within this order and let us know how divination, invocation, evocation, conjuration, illumination are all integral parts of serious studies of the occult. In the end we will be talking a bit about the future of magick in general and Nikki's projects in this context, including a book on standard chaos monastic practices to be published within days, teachings online and in person, launching her new website and hopefully much more writing. Nikky Wyrd's homepage The Universe Machine Psychedelic press Breaking Convention IOT Blog Mandrake (Mogg Morgan's publishing company) Music played in this episode This week's music is dedicated to psychedelic rock for a good reason (see the title of the episode). As I am myself not really a specialist of the genre, I though I offer you WIKIPEDIA'S thoughts on it: Psychedelic rock is a rock music genre that is inspired, influenced, or representative of psychedelic culture, which is centered on perception-altering hallucinogenic drugs. The music incorporated new electronic sound effects and recording effects, extended solos, and improvisation. Many psychedelic groups differ in style, and the label is often applied spuriously. Originating in the mid-1960s among British and American musicians, the sound of psychedelic rock invokes three core effects of LSD: depersonalization, dechronicization, and dynamization, all of which detach the user from reality. Musically, the effects may be represented via novelty studio tricks, electronic or non-Western instrumentation, disjunctive song structures, and extended instrumental segments. Some of the earlier 1960s psychedelic rock musicians were based in folk, jazz, and the blues, while others showcased an explicit Indian classical influence called "raga rock". In the 1960s, there existed two main variants of the genre: the more whimsical, surrealist British psychedelia and the harder American West Coast "acid rock". While "acid rock" is sometimes deployed interchangeably with the term "ps...

The Art of Longevity

Play Episode Play 43 sec Highlight Listen Later Jun 26, 2021 51:36

The Coral is a band revered on the music scene - a real artist's band. They are very accomplished musicians who first got together at school in the small Wirral town of Hoylake. The band members bonded over their many music icons, from The Beatles and the Small Faces to Acker Bilk and Del Shannon. Listening to a record by the Coral is a dizzying fairground tour of Liverpool's music hall pop heritage mixed with American West Coast psychedelia and a lot else besides. Sometimes all in one song. Yet it sounds like no other band except The Coral. Funny then that some 20 years after their debut, The Coral has made an album that sounds more like themselves than anything else they've done. ‘Coral Island' is themed on the romantic ideal of the faded seaside town. The band has had an ongoing obsession with the sea since day one, but Coral Island is different. The band collaborated with artist Edwin Burdis to actually build the island and once it became a physical thing, the band's imagination was stretched further to bring it to life with stories, characters and poetic interludes narrated by the Skelly brothers' own Grandad. The album is an end-to-end modern classic, yet the band's singer James Skelly told me he expected the album would linger in obscurity, but it reached number two on the UK album charts and has received critical praise across the board. It's probably their best record so far and if it's too early to tell, then let's say Coral Island is a potential masterpiece. It's nice to see a band as good as The Coral come full circle over the course of two decades.   When the band was elevated to the top of ‘Britpop' mania in 2002 with their song ‘Dreaming of You' and their Mercury Prize nominated debut album, they had a great time basking in the limelight and usurping industry etiquette (a Freddie Mercury impersonator stood in for them at the Mercury Prize ceremony). However, The Coral also lost touch with reality. When they released a third album of spooky psychedelic jams, they thought it might get to number one (like their second album ‘Magic and Medicine'). It was perhaps an act of subconscious self-sabotage. A self-correcting mechanism. But at the time it's just what the band wanted to do, though their judgement was somewhat skewed by skunk. In episode 7 of The Art of Longevity, James Skelly walks me through the rest of this remarkable band's story in a conversation we both thoroughly enjoyed, partly because I was very impressed by the combination of working class ambition, humble wisdom and complete dedication to artistry. There is no doubt when you hear James's account of the band's character and history, that The Coral would work their way through the mangle of the music industry and come out of it relatively unscathed. And, creatively speaking, even better. In particular though, it's the songs. Skelly and co do not lack a way with melody. As I put it to him, he could write Coldplay songs all day long, but then there are these things called minor chords...and The Coral never minded a little darkness and spookiness mixed in with the melody. No need for them to call Max Martin in to help write the next few hits (though I suspect Max is a fan). As James says himself, in The Coral's early days he would kill for a song. Some 20 years in, he's no longer in need of such morbid thoughts. Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

Live from the American West Coast in Seattle, this is West Coast Radio. Good to be with you, my name is Matthew and joining me on the program is Robert Smithline, Writer and Director of the brand new Amazon Prime Video Series, "The Hunter’s Anthology". "Six strangers find themselves trapped in a New York City subway by Mac (Taylor August), a mysterious man who claims to be a demon hunter.  Insisting one of them is evil, he peeks into their souls discovering five eerie, supernatural tales.  It’s then up to Mac to solve the mystery and destroy the demon amongst them." If you ask me, The Hunter’s Anthology is a fantastic combination of The Twilight Zone, Beyond Belief: Fact of Fiction, Amazing Stories, a healthy dose of funny and a dash of CSI Miami. You’ve read about it in The New York Times and you can watch it right now! I really enjoyed this series and trust that you will too. Check it out on Amazon Prime Video!" There were a number of titillating topics of discussion during the broadcast. Rev. Kevin Annett rejoins the program to share the global press statement and announcement issued in Vancouver on Thursday, January 23, 2020 by the International Tribunal of Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS). Specifically the statements says: For the past sixteen months, a Citizens Grand Jury based in Vancouver has carefully documented the evidence of ongoing crimes against humanity on Canada’s west coast. These crimes include the rape, torture and trafficking of women and children, the harvesting and trafficking of human organs, the cult ritual torture and murder of men, women and children, the terrorizing, despoiling and dispossessing of indigenous communities, and the targeted killing of traditional indigenous people and political dissidents by domestic and foreign powers. It is clear from this evidence that a continuity of genocide exists in Canada. The crime has never ceased and involves the same forces of Church, State and Business that historically led this genocide but is now is being led by Chinese corporate, military and governmental forces in collusion with the Canadian government. On the basis of this evidence, and in my capacity as the North American Field Secretary of the ITCCS, on January 16 I petitioned the Tribunal to convene a Common Law Court to indict and prosecute the persons and institutions responsible for these crimes in Canada, according to the provisions of the ITCCS Mandate of June 15, 2010. In response, on January 21 I was notified that the ITCCS has assented to this request. SAS is opening a year-round route to Los Angeles from Copenhagen. The first flight will be in January 2020. Big demand from leisure travelers in Denmark and a more attractive timetable with daily flights mean that the route will be part of the flight program from the new year. SAS PRESS RELEASE From 13 January 2020, SAS will be moving its route between Stockholm and Los Angeles to the Danish capital. This won't be the first route SAS decided to relocate due to the previously introduced Swedish aviation tax(Lag (2017:1200) om skatt pa flygresor) which carriers has to pay up to SEK400 (EUR39) on long haul routes departing from Swedish airports. The non-existent flight SK963 was flying between Stockholm - Hong Kong before was moved to Copenhagen under a better time slot in October 2018. A320neo SAS However, this won't be the only reason for SAS to make the decision of moving its long haul operation from Stockholm, the "Greta Thunberg effect" has been impacting Swedish travel habits, new buzzwords in Swedish mainstream media like flygskam (flight shame) and tagskryt (train bragging) has made the global air travel industry worried. SAS is also moving its Los Angeles route to Copenhagen at a strategic time as the other big carrier at CPH - Norwegian will suspend 3 long haul destinations in winter season 2019, routes being canceled are Copenhagen to Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK and Los Angeles. This was seem as a move that the low cost carrier is shifting from growth to profitability, something SAS is also keen on after the week-long strike earlier (from April 26 to May 2) in the summer season. The 'new' route will have an improved timetable from six to seven departures a week from Copenhagen Airport(CPH) starting next March. "By opening a year-round route to Los Angeles from Copenhagen we are increasing availability and enabling growth. The timetable is attractive, and thanks to the economies of scale we can achieve in fully utilizing our fleet, we are in a position to provide a daily service from Copenhagen Airport," says Karl Sandlund EVP Commercial, SAS. "Los Angeles is one of the most in-demand intercontinental routes from Copenhagen, and an important route for our leisure customers in particular, who are keen to visit the American West Coast. We continuously assess our offering in order to optimize our network for our travelers," says Karl Sandlund. Flights from Copenhagen to Los Angeles can be booked from 3 September 2019. The first flight departs 13 January 2020. Passengers with already purchased tickets from Stockholm to Los Angeles, will be rebooked via Copenhagen. A350-900 SAS The new time schedule for the route starting January 13th: Flight SK931 departs from CPH 09:35 and arrives in Los Angeles 12:15 the same day. Flight SK932 departs from Los Angeles 14:00 and arrives in CPH 10:10 the day after. There will be daily departures on the route SK9321/932 between Copenhagen and Los Angeles starting on March 31st 2020, something suggests that their newly received A350s next year will come into play here.

The city of Kyiv is the center of Ukrainian culture. Up to 2014 more than 20 million foreigners visited Ukraine annually. But since 2014 this has lowered to about 10 -14 million. Having survived the Mongol Empire, WWII, Chernobyl, and Soviet rule, Kyiv is the proud capital of Ukraine...Natalia Patrikeeva,Bogdan Rudnytski and Andriy Dorosh spoke about the heritage tours of Ukraine, virtual tour, genealogy research in Ukraine, Poland and Slovakia, private tour guide in Ukraine, Poland and Slovakia…................10 FACTS ABOUT UKRAINE, ITS HISTORY, AND ITS PEOPLE1. Ukraine is home to the first constitution in the modern world. In 1710, Ukrainian Cossack leader Pylyp Orlyk authored a constitution establishing three branches of government and legally underscored the importance of equality and human rights for citizens under Cossack rule, including a guarantee for free elections. Orlyk’s government predates the United States Constitution by 77 years. 2. Ukraine is the largest country in Europe. At 233,013 square miles, Ukraine is 2,000 square miles larger than mainland France, 50,000 square miles larger than Spain, and 200,000 square miles larger than Germany3.Ukraine’s ties to Western Europe span more than a 1,000 years. The daughter of Grand Prince Yaroslav, Anna, became the Queen Consort of France in 1051. Anna was highly educated and introduced Eastern culture to the Franks, paving the way for relationships between medieval Ukraine and Western Europe for centuries. 4.Ukrainian civilizations date back to 4800 B.C. The Trypillian and Scythian civilizations thrived in the land where Ukraine is today. At their peak in the 7th century B.C., the Scythians actively traded with civilizations in lands as far away as China, Persia, Egypt, and Greece. 5. Ukrainian leaders shielded thousands of Jews during WWII. Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, the head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church for 45 years, was honored by the Anti-Defamation League in 2013 for saving thousands of Jews during WWII. He and other civic and Church leaders hid Jews in their homes and monasteries during the Nazi invasion. A common criticism of Ukrainians is anti-Semitism, but figures like Metropolitan Sheptytsky, dispel such accusations. 6. Ukrainians were subject to one of the worst genocides in history. As many as ten million Ukrainians were killed when they were denied food between 1932-1933. The act, which is widely considered to be genocide on the part of the Soviet Union, is known as the Holodomor. Entire villages where Ukrainians had died were repopulated by ethnic Russians in order to create ethnic homogeny in the Soviet Union.7. Most Ukrainians want to join the European Union. According to the most recent public opinion poll by Deutsche Welle, 73% of Ukrainians want to join the European Union, and the Gorshenin Institute showed that 53% of Ukrainians want to join NATO.8. The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian. In most countries, the official language is that of the predominant ethnicity – for which many countries are named. Although many ethnic Ukrainians speak Russian and do business in the Russian language, Article 10 of Ukraine’s constitution requires all official activity of the central government to be conducted in Ukrainian. However, the constitution guarantees protections for minority languages, including Russian. Some local governments have adopted Russian, Moldovan, Romanian, and Hungarian as secondary official languages, and are encouraged to use those languages to govern locally, though not nationally. 9. Ukraine has paid off $14 billion USD of its debts in recent months. As Ukraine teeters on the edge of a national default, recent months have proven that it can still live up to its word and pay its international debts. Since Chicagoan Natalie Jaresko took over as Finance Minister in December, Ukraine has paid international creditors $14 billion USD. 10. Ukraine is home to 45.49 million people. According to the World Bank, Ukraine was home to 45.49 million people in 2013 – that’s just short of the population of the entire American West Coast at the last federal census. Ukraine fell victim to massive population loss after independence in 1991, as more than 7 million Ukrainians left their homeland to find work in the United States, Western Europe, and the Middle East. The city of Kyiv is the center of Ukrainian culture. Up to 2014 more than 20 million foreigners visited Ukraine annually. But since 2014 this has lowered to about 10 -14 million. Having survived the Mongol Empire, WWII, Chernobyl, and Soviet rule, Kyiv is the proud capital of Ukraine... 10 FACTS ABOUT UKRAINE, ITS HISTORY, AND ITS PEOPLE1. Strange but true, Peter Morse has just travelled to the fly fishing mecca of Oregon on the American West Coast and New Zealand with his 2 handed Spey fly rod and didn't catch a single fish! Anyone who knows Peter, knows that he could catch them in a bath tub, the reason he didn't catch fish was that he was too busy competition casting! We also hear about the 13 year old girl who is the world fly casting accuracy champion. That's our first cast this morning on The Big Fish. Rob Paxevanos has a Clyde River special, we look at the king of the estuary, the mighty Mulloway and some of the other winter options. Stinker takes us on a minimalists fishing trip to the Dampier Archipelago. Armed with nothing more than a 50lb handline and a 6/0 hook he caught bags and bags of hard fighting great eating fish. Alex Bellissimo continues our fishing journey along the Northern Beaches of Sydney. This week we share some hot spots on Freshwater and Curl Curl beach as we work our way from Manly to Palm Beach.

Welcome to episode 75 of Love That Album.   I’m joined by my friend and fellow presenter from the See Hear podcast, Mr Bernard Stickwell to discuss the legacy of the songwriter, musician, orchestrator and singer, Judee Sill. In the early 1970s Judee gave the world two magnificent records - her eponymous debut and its follow up Heart Food. In an era when songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Warren Zevon (who covered one of Judee's songs) were revered, and the American West Coast sound was popular, it seems bizarre that Judee’s artistic triumphs were commercial failures. The lack of commercial success, however, was just another disappointment in a life full of hardship. Bernie and I discuss her life’s story as well as what makes the music so wonderful. If you haven’t caught up with her repertoire yet, Bernie and I urge you to get these two albums. Thank us later.   Eric Reanimator returns for another great Album I Love segment to discuss a compilation by country songwriter (and actor) Hoyt Axton.   You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com.au     Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum.     If you’d consider writing an iTunes review or recommending the show to a friend, I’d be immensely grateful.
