In this episode, Brad Hill reads an essay written by previous guest, friend of the show, and staple member of the Alabama flyfishing community, Andre Davis. This essay is a look into the passion that so many of us share in this world of flyfishing in the state of Alabama and beyond. We hope you will enjoy this essay, but more than that, we hope it encourages you to find your own adventures and write your own stories in the Storied Outdoors.
In this episode we talk to Andre Davis. Andre is an avid outdoorsman who finds peace and restoration in the demonstrative power of God's nature. He is a proud big brother, uncle, son and husband. Andre' has spent a lifetime outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, building, playing music and teaching. Married to a sixth grade teacher, his household is full of the desire to teach and lead our youth well, with the joyful expectation of watching them become better than ourselves. Andre' has a non-profit called Skillz and Gills where kids are taught the basics of fly fishing, how to set up a rig, fly casting, all about waterways, ecosystems, conservation, and fish handling. He's a staple in the Alabama fly fishing community, a mentor of the Mayfly Project, an avid fly tier, and friend of the show. Many of you may be surprised to know that Andre is also an excellent writer and storyteller. We've had the privilege of reading several of his personal essays and we talk about those on the show. We had Andre on once before at the international fly fishing film festival at Cahaba Brewery last year, but we wanted to extend our conversation with him this year. We know you will enjoy hearing from our friend, Andre Davis. Reforming the way juveniles experience the justice system has been a hot topic in the Maryland General Assembly this year. Earlier this month, both the House and Senate passed bills that address concerns about holding young offenders accountable while also offering them appropriate rehabilitation. Tom's guests on this issue are State Delegate Luke Clippinger, former judge Andre Davis and the CEO of Human Rights for Kids, James Dold. Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

Joel is kicking off Black History month with two individuals who fight every day to make a change. First up is the incomparable Chandra Clark, a Boston-based non-profit executive and model influencer of change. Also joining is Joel's good friend, Andre Davis, a high-powered business leader and social activist who hails from The Heartland. We're diving into the impact of Black History and keeping its legacy strong not just this month, but always.
First up down on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta we have Peter Jordan with the Lost Angler Fly Shop. With water temps dropping and fish moving deeper, Peter discusses the necessity of becoming proficient with sinking lines and how to maneuver your boat to give you the best shots at getting a streamer past fish. We discuss how drought conditions push saltwater species into “freshwater” areas, and how Gulf Coast anglers can target a wide variety of fresh and saltwater species all on the same body of water. Next up we swing over to Lake Eufala on the Chattahoochee river to talk with Steve “Graz” Graziano. Join us as Graz talks winter topwater bites, lipless crankbaits, alligators, and jig fishing; and stick around to the end to hear why anglers should pay extra attention to boating safety as the temperature starts to drop. Rounding off this week's show we talk with Andre Davis over on the Black Warrior and Cahaba Rivers in the central part of the state. We discuss how small water can mean big action on bluebird winter days, and how to keep your fingers and toes warm when wading and stripping line in Alabama's bluelines. It's all brought to you, whether it's good, bad, or ugly. A special two-episode drop: From pitching family members at a birthday barbecue to winning the $1 million Black Ambition grand prize, Justin Turk and Andre Davis funded their construction-software company without any experience raising capital for a startup. “I didn't have a venture capital Rolodex,” Justin tells Felecia in episode 3 of So Ambitious. “I didn't know the angel investors were around the corner.” What he was sure of was that even when he was one of three Black entrepreneurs in a room full of people pitching ideas to investors, he was in the right place: “That's what I feel like being uninterrupted means,” he says. “I am where I belong.” https://livegistics.com/ Sponsored by Heineken USA.
Last Monday, we talked here on Midday about a proposal by a coalition called Renew Baltimore to have voters approve two charter amendments that would dictate a dramatic reduction in the property tax rate in Baltimore city. The proposal would reduce the rate by 44% over a period of six years, from 2.248% to 1.25% per $100,000 of value. The property tax rate in the city of Baltimore is roughly twice as high as any other jurisdiction in MD. For decades, candidates for public office in the city have feigned interest in reducing taxes for homeowners and businesses, and some modest reductions have taken place from time to time. Renew Baltimore thinks that decisive, dramatic action is needed, and they want to enshrine it in the city charter so the annual reductions can't be reversed by whomever happens to be in elected office at the time. Last week, Tom spoke with Andre Davis, a former federal judge and Baltimore Solicitor, and the economist Anirban Basu, the CEO of the Sage Policy Group, who are members of the Renew Baltimore Coalition. They spoke in favor of the proposal. They have been collecting signatures on a petition to bring the matter to referendum in November. They need to collect 10,000 signatures. The deadline for that effort is today (Monday, August 1). We'd like to continue that conversation today on Midday with two people who oppose the specific plan put forth by Renew Baltimore. Robert Cenname is the Budget Director of Baltimore City… Matt Gallagher is the former Chief of Staff for Gov. Martin O'Malley. He's the President of the Goldseker Foundation... They both join Tom in Studio A..See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

For decades, candidates for public office in the city have feigned interest in reducing taxes for homeowners and businesses, and some modest reductions have taken place from time to time. Now, a group of civic leaders have entered into the conversation determined to take decisive, dramatic action with a proposal to cut the tax rate nearly in half over a period of six years, and to change the city charter so the annual reductions can't be reversed by whomever happens to be in elected office at the time. The group has organized itself as a coalition called “Renew Baltimore.” Today on Midday: a conversation about their proposal, and its implications for businesses, homeowners and the city coffers. Tom's Newsmaker guest today is the former Solicitor of Baltimore City, Andre Davis. In 2017, Judge Davis left his seat on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and answered then-Mayor Catherine Pugh's call for him to serve as his hometown’s top lawyer. He was front and center in efforts to recruit Michael Harrison as the city’s police commissioner after Daryl De Sousa resigned amid scandal. When Mayor Pugh was forced to resign by her own corruption scandal, Davis was a stabilizing force in a city hall rocked by crisis. Andre Davis worked to reform the Baltimore Police Department, and he took controversial positions about the role of the Civilian Review Board, gag orders for victims of police misconduct, and the city’s liability arising from the scandal of the Gun Trace Task Force. Today on Midday, Andre Davis reflects on his tenure in city government, politics and public service, and he takes your questions and comments.

Last month, the Labor Department reported a national unemployment rate of 3.5%, the lowest it’s been in 50 years. The unemployment rate is only one metric by which the job market can be evaluated, and many point to its inherent flaws, but the reality for many employers is that filling jobs with skilled workers is harder than it used to be. One estimate has it that there are nearly 70 million available jobs nationally. There are more than 30 workforce development organizations in the Baltimore metro area. Today on Midday, a look at some of those programs, and a conversation with three experts in the employment field about what can be done to scale-up the effective ones, so that more people can be trained for jobs that are in demand, and that pay well.Linda Dworak is the Director of the Baltimore Workforce Funders Collaborative (a member of the Maryland Philanthropy Network) and the author of a report being published this week by the Abell Foundation that suggests ways some of these programs can be expanded to serve more than the 2,700 people currently involved in job training programs…We’re also joined by two people whose organizations offer workforce training.Mike Posko is the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake. He directs Habitat's HabiCorps program, which trains previously incarcerated individuals in carpentry and construction management; And Tiffani Truss is the Director of Training Services at the Jane-Addams Resource Corporation (JARC), which offers job training in manufacturing. This conversation was live-streamed on WYPR's Facebook Page. Watch the video here; the segment runs from 0:00 to 39:55 on the video stream.Speaking of workforce development: there will be a special event later this week (on Thursday October 24 -- at 4:00pm) at the Peabody Heights Brewery, an initiative called GOOD BUSINESS WORKS will be launched. It’s a collaboration by Baltimore business leaders, workforce experts, and nonprofits who are recognizing businesses that are creating jobs and maintaining equitable and inclusive workplaces. For more information on the event, click here.Another program note about an event in which Tom Hall will be participating tomorrow night (October 23) at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. It’s another in the Great Talk series. The topic tomorrow night is “Baltimore: Not Just an American City: What Baltimore Means, Beyond the Headlines.”The panel will include Andre Davis, the Baltimore City Solicitor, Trif Alatzas, the Publisher and Editor in Chief of the Baltimore Sun, and Thibault Manekin, the co-founder of Seawall Development. Tom Hall will be the moderator. The conversation will begin at 7:00pm. Tickets for individual talks in the series are $15, and can be purchased online or at the door. Our guests this week are Kerri Brocker and Andre Davis from Built Interior Construction powered by Dirtt. Legal immigrants, especially those who hope to bring family members to join them, are worried about new regulations from the Trump administration re-defining who should be excluded from the U.S. … because they are likely to become dependant on food stamps, school lunches, Medicaid or other government benefits.Baltimore is the first city to challenge the new definitions in Court. City solicitor Andre Davis tells us why the city is suing over the changes and conservative analyst Art Arthur, a former immigration judge, argues in favor of the tougher regulations.
