“For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1    Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE!    Today we continue season 5 of the podcast with our series on Freedom and Responsibility.  Cecilia and Claire help us dive into what freedom and responsibility look like for the first plane child, the 0-6 year old.   Cecilia Drabbant holds an Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) diploma in Assistant to Infancy (0-3), as well as an AMI certificate in Montessori Core Principles. She also holds an Architecture Engineering degree from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan, Bandung, Indonesia, and completed her formation in evangelization from Emmanuel School of Mission in Rome, Italy. Her work includes serving both as a Toddler Directress and a Toddler Catechist for the weekly sessions at Renaissance Montessori School.  Since being introduced to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 2012, she has received CGS formation in Levels I, II, III, and Infant-Toddler, and has the opportunity to work with children at all levels. Additionally, she is recognized as a Level 1 Formation Leader.  A particularly meaningful moment in her ministry was when she and her team brought the first CGS Formation Course to Indonesia in its native language.  Currently, Cecilia serves as a Catechist and Atrium Program Director at Renaissance Montessori School in Nokesville, VA, also a Level II Catechist at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish Church in Colonial Beach, VA.      Claire Paglia is a child of the atrium. As an adult, she is an AMI-trained guide who has been in the primary environment for 12 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in education with a concentration in Montessori from Loyola University, Maryland. She worked for a year as a course assistant for the primary training center. In 2012, she received her Level I formation and has been a catechist at her church in varying capacities since then. She enjoys spending time with her family and particularly enjoys preparing Montessori-friendly spaces at home for her three children.      Books you may be interested in:    Nurturing the Whole Child by Gianna Gobbi    Positive Discipline in the Montessori Classroom  The Discovery of the Child    Carolyn Kohlhaas's blog The Wanderings of Sheep in the Atrium:  Freedom and Limits Series:  Freedom within Limits  "Can" and "May"  Belonging  Staying on the Path  The Collective Interest  A Place of Work  Additional Limits  True Freedom    Podcast Episodes you might be interested in:  Episode 30 – Freedom and Discipline with Claire Paglia  Episode 49 – Four Planes of Development with Claire Paglia    BECOME AN ORGANIZATION MEMBER!  Organization Members are any entity (church/parish, school, regional group, diocese, etc.) that either offers CGS and/or supports those who serve the children as catechists, aides, or formation leaders) Organization Members also receive the following each month:  Bulletin Items - 4 bulletin articles for each month. Instead it offers a glimpse into the religious life of the atrium, a specially prepared place for children to live out their silent request: “Help me come closer to God by myself.” Here we can see the child's spiritual capabilities and perhaps even find in our own souls the child long burdened with religious information. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. The desire to have this essential text available in audio has been a long-held goal for many. The work of many hands has combined to bring this release to life as an audiobook.    Find out more about CGS:       Learn more about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd     Follow us on Social Media-  Facebook at “The United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd”  Instagram-  cgsusa  Twitter- @cgsusa  Pinterest- Natl Assoc of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd USA  YouTube- catechesisofthegoodshepherd

378: US Pro Soccer's "League 1 America" - With Jim Paglia

Good Seats Still Available

Spurred on by a hugely intriguing article in The Athletic penned last November by Episode 274 guest Pablo Maurer (as well as another by Guardian soccer writer Jack Williams back in 2016), we delve into the fascinating story of the visionary, yet controversial 1990s American pro soccer league that never was - League 1 America - with its mastermind Jim Paglia.  Born in the wake of the 1989 awarding of the 1994 FIFA World Cup to the United States, League 1 America was an ambitious attempt to reimagine a post-Cup pro soccer league for an American audience that gravitated toward fast-paced, high-scoring sports like football and basketball. Paglia's vision centered on blending traditional soccer elements with entertainment-focused innovations and dedicated mall-like facilities, aiming to build a league that prioritized marketability and fan engagement above all else. The league's format featured radical rule changes, including shootouts to resolve ties, shortened match durations, and scoring modifications to encourage more goals and continuous action. Paglia also planned to lean heavily on corporate sponsorships, creating a business model that integrated entertainment and commercial viability, with aspirations of competing against America's major sports leagues for both fans and television audiences. Despite its innovative ideas, League 1 America never materialized. The league faced a skeptical sporting landscape, with the demise of the North American Soccer League in the mid-1980s still fresh in the public's memory and doubts about soccer's viability as a mainstream American sport. Financial hurdles, coupled with resistance from soccer traditionalists and a lack of institutional support, doomed the project before it could get off the ground. Critics dismissed Paglia's vision as an overly commercialized distortion of soccer's essence, while fans of the global game balked at the Americanized rule changes. Yet, the story of League 1 America remains a fascinating “what if” in the history of U.S. soccer. A number of its ideas - especially the building of experience-driven soccer-specific stadiums - can be seen in today's Major League Soccer.  Paglia's efforts highlighted both the challenges and opportunities of growing soccer in the U.S., underscoring the tension between preserving the sport's global traditions and adapting it to local tastes. Today, as soccer continues its steady rise in America, League 1 America serves as a reminder of the bold experimentation and resilience that helped lay the groundwork for the sport's future. + + +  SUPPORT THE SHOW:  Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE    FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

I welcome all listeners to send in a Rant or Rave on a Stargirl, person/persona you fixate on, or cultural event/moment that you love or hate. This first round was open to Patrons only, and we listen to my favorite three submissions here today! Here's how it works: Record a 0:30 - 2:00 minute-long voice note Email the audio file to me at stargirldirect@gmail.com Subject line should read “Rant / Rave” on [your subject]” In the email, please not e how you'd like to be attributed (full name, first name only, IG handle, etc.) Show notes: This week we tackle a classic Stargirl: Dame Elizabeth Taylor. I talk about the many elements of her myth that I somehow inherited—her violet eyes, “married eight times to seven men,” her health issues, etc. I decide that although Liz Taylor is indeed beautiful, prolific, and messy, her real singularity lies in her Sturdiness: She is womanly, down-to-earth, and robust. We also discuss Camille Paglia's incredible fixation on Liz, and leaf through Liz's memoir/self-help/recipe book about her own weight gain and loss, Elizabeth Takes Off. Plus, I finally acknowledge the Chappell Roan phenomenon, praise Addison for her underwater Dhanurasana, and challenge myself to discuss the election head-on, rather than roll my eyes and look away. We got this y'all! Discussed: “Sabrina, Chappell, and Charli are suddenly stars.

After fully tackling the issue of unceasing online gender discourse between man-hating-women and women-hating-men last season, zaddy Slumzog joins us again this season to discuss "A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality" by Joseph Nicolosi. Of course, any basil-enjoyer worth his salt knows that Sexual Identities™ just like Gender Identities™ are not real beyond their reference to weapoinzable legal fictions stemming from the Civil Rights Act-based censorship regime.  But that phenomenon - adopting for oneself a politicized identity - can only come subsequent to the conception of oneself *as* that politicized identity based on subjective psychological/psychosexual thoughts/feelings/attractions.  So where do those come from? Why are people pretending to know what a Paglia™ is? What is to be done about the Taylor Swift-Sports™ Question? will the Sorbrah rise in the west? Will the moonbrah split in half?  Sit your ass down and be prepared to be (spiritually) whitemansplained to, cause zaddy Slumzog isn't here to shill a pod or sell solbrah panties, he's here to give us some good ole fashioned male guidance to hopefully us, hopefully, prevent Gay™ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/barebactrian/support

Many of you I'm sure are familiar with the provocative scholar and social critic Camille Paglia. You may have seen her recently interviewed by Jordan Peterson on her criticisms of cultural Marxism. An older video of a talk she gave has recently resurfaced where she describes transgenderism in particular and androgyne in general as a sign of civilizational collapse. I want to show you just how prescient her comments were in light of what's happening today.   Highlights:  ●      “Camille Paglia, who is herself a very outspoken lesbian and more of a classical liberal, recognized that this current trans mania, as it were, is first and foremost, potential child abuse, what she called a crime against humanity if sex reassignment surgery is imposed children, who are not prepared to make such a life-altering, permanently body-altering decision. But secondly, it's actually just the latest outworking of a common human experience of social and cultural alienation.” ●      According to Paglia, androgyne is not just a matter of societal degeneration, it concurrently presents itself as an opportunity for traditional manhood to rise up around the periphery of such a confused culture and take it over! And that's exactly what we're seeing all around the world.”  Resources:  ●      Need employees? Don't hire workers who hate your values. Post your jobs on RedBalloon.work. Welcome to episode 1303, another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. In this episode Stevie is in Castello della Sala (Part of the Antinori Group) in Umbria continuing her conversation with Massimiliano Pasquini, general manager. Today's episode is part 2 of 2. More about today's winery Castello della Sala is located in Umbria, a short distance from the border with Tuscany, about 18 kilometers from the historic city of Orvieto. The lands of the Castle, an imposing medieval manor house, extend for 600 hectares, of which 200 hectares are planted with vines, halfway between the Paglia river and the summit of Monte Nibbio. The Castello della Sala was built in 1350 for Angelo Monaldeschi della Vipera, whose family had arrived in Italy following Charlemagne in the 9th century. From 1300 the members of the family opposed each other for the control of Orvieto, achieved in 1437 by Gentile, nephew of Angelo dei Monaldeschi della Vipera and dictator of the city for about a decade. After Gentile's death in 1466, a serene season was inaugurated at the castle crowned by the peacemaking marriage between Pietro Antonio della Vipera, Gentile's son, and his cousin Giovanna Monaldeschi della Cervara. The 200 hectares of vineyards, cultivated with traditional varieties such as Procanico and Grechetto, but also with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sèmillon, Pinot Blanc, Viognier and a small amount of Traminer and Riesling, are located at an altitude of 220 - 470 meters sea level. That of Castello della Sala is an area highly suited to the production of whites with one exception: Pinot Noir, finds in this terroir the ideal conditions to express itself at its best. The area is characterized by a clayey, calcareous soil, rich in fossil shells, with vineyards well exposed to the sunrise and with excellent temperature ranges. In this episode, Divya talks to Dr. Johan Oldekop. Johan is a senior lecturer at the Global Development Institute at the University of Manchester. He conducts interdisciplinary research and uses large-scale publicly available datasets to understand tradeoffs and synergies between conservation and development outcomes. In this conversation, they primarily focused on Johan's work on the impact evaluation of the zero hunger program in Brazil and his parallel research exploring the links between forests and livelihoods in the global south. For both these projects, Johan conducted large-scale research and worked with big datasets. As we discussed these projects, it was interesting to learn what working on a large scale with big datasets looks like, including its advantages and also some of the key limitations. Johan shared that in his research on the impact evaluation of the zero hunger program, a program that was implemented to meet the sustainable development goal of reducing hunger in Brazil, he found that in addition to addressing hunger, the program also improves households' access to nutrition and address the supply chain issues of agriculture production. Johan emphasized that it is important to evaluate and understand the multidimensional impacts of social protection programs so they can be implemented to their fullest potential and yield maximum benefits. For his research on exploring forest-livelihood linkages in the global south, Johan's research showed that forest management and restoration programs that prioritized community rights are more likely to reduce deforestation and poverty and eventually align with global goals for climate mitigation, environmental justice, and sustainable development. Divya and Johan wrapped up the conversation with a discussion on Johan's upcoming research project, which aims to examine the drivers of reforestation and sustainable forest transitions in India, Nepal, Brazil, and Mexico.
