"For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 “The child's development follows a path of successive stages of independence and our knowledge of this must guide us in our behavior towards him. We have to help the child to act, will, and think for himself. This is the art of serving the spirit. An art which can be practiced to perfection only when working among children.” Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind Submit a Podcast Listener Question HERE! Spurred on by a hugely intriguing article in The Athletic penned last November by Episode 274 guest Pablo Maurer (as well as another by Guardian soccer writer Jack Williams back in 2016), we delve into the fascinating story of the visionary, yet controversial 1990s American pro soccer league that never was - League 1 America - with its mastermind Jim Paglia. Born in the wake of the 1989 awarding of the 1994 FIFA World Cup to the United States, League 1 America was an ambitious attempt to reimagine a post-Cup pro soccer league for an American audience that gravitated toward fast-paced, high-scoring sports like football and basketball. Paglia's vision centered on blending traditional soccer elements with entertainment-focused innovations and dedicated mall-like facilities, aiming to build a league that prioritized marketability and fan engagement above all else. The league's format featured radical rule changes, including shootouts to resolve ties, shortened match durations, and scoring modifications to encourage more goals and continuous action. Paglia also planned to lean heavily on corporate sponsorships, creating a business model that integrated entertainment and commercial viability, with aspirations of competing against America's major sports leagues for both fans and television audiences. Despite its innovative ideas, League 1 America never materialized. The league faced a skeptical sporting landscape, with the demise of the North American Soccer League in the mid-1980s still fresh in the public's memory and doubts about soccer's viability as a mainstream American sport. Financial hurdles, coupled with resistance from soccer traditionalists and a lack of institutional support, doomed the project before it could get off the ground. Critics dismissed Paglia's vision as an overly commercialized distortion of soccer's essence, while fans of the global game balked at the Americanized rule changes. Yet, the story of League 1 America remains a fascinating “what if” in the history of U.S. soccer. A number of its ideas - especially the building of experience-driven soccer-specific stadiums - can be seen in today's Major League Soccer. Paglia's efforts highlighted both the challenges and opportunities of growing soccer in the U.S., underscoring the tension between preserving the sport's global traditions and adapting it to local tastes. Today, as soccer continues its steady rise in America, League 1 America serves as a reminder of the bold experimentation and resilience that helped lay the groundwork for the sport's future. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Blue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

I welcome all listeners to send in a Rant or Rave on a Stargirl, person/persona you fixate on, or cultural event/moment that you love or hate. This first round was open to Patrons only, and we listen to my favorite three submissions here today! Here's how it works: Record a 0:30 - 2:00 minute-long voice note Email the audio file to me at stargirldirect@gmail.com Subject line should read “Rant / Rave” on [your subject]” In the email, please not e how you'd like to be attributed (full name, first name only, IG handle, etc.) Show notes: This week we tackle a classic Stargirl: Dame Elizabeth Taylor. I talk about the many elements of her myth that I somehow inherited—her violet eyes, “married eight times to seven men,” her health issues, etc. I decide that although Liz Taylor is indeed beautiful, prolific, and messy, her real singularity lies in her Sturdiness: She is womanly, down-to-earth, and robust. We also discuss Camille Paglia's incredible fixation on Liz, and leaf through Liz's memoir/self-help/recipe book about her own weight gain and loss, Elizabeth Takes Off. Plus, I finally acknowledge the Chappell Roan phenomenon, praise Addison for her underwater Dhanurasana, and challenge myself to discuss the election head-on, rather than roll my eyes and look away. We got this y'all! Discussed: “Sabrina, Chappell, and Charli are suddenly stars. Why now?” Mikael Wood in the LA times Azaelia Banks on Chappell Roan Addison's underwater amazingness “Love of Country and Aloha Spirit with Tulsi Gabbard,” Jocko Podcast Excerpt from “Elizabeth Taylor: Hollywood's Pagan Queen,” Camille Paglia, originally published in Penthouse magazine (1992) Interview with Paglia on Liz Taylor, Salon (2011) Elizabeth Takes Off: On Weight Gain, Weight Loss, Self-Image, and Self-Esteem, Elizabeth Taylor (1987)

Many of you I'm sure are familiar with the provocative scholar and social critic Camille Paglia. You may have seen her recently interviewed by Jordan Peterson on her criticisms of cultural Marxism. An older video of a talk she gave has recently resurfaced where she describes transgenderism in particular and androgyne in general as a sign of civilizational collapse. I want to show you just how prescient her comments were in light of what's happening today. Highlights: ● “Camille Paglia, who is herself a very outspoken lesbian and more of a classical liberal, recognized that this current trans mania, as it were, is first and foremost, potential child abuse, what she called a crime against humanity if sex reassignment surgery is imposed children, who are not prepared to make such a life-altering, permanently body-altering decision. But secondly, it's actually just the latest outworking of a common human experience of social and cultural alienation.” ● According to Paglia, androgyne is not just a matter of societal degeneration, it concurrently presents itself as an opportunity for traditional manhood to rise up around the periphery of such a confused culture and take it over! And that's exactly what we're seeing all around the world.” Resources: ● Need employees? Don't hire workers who hate your values. Post your jobs on RedBalloon.work. In this episode, Divya talks to Dr. Johan Oldekop. Johan is a senior lecturer at the Global Development Institute at the University of Manchester. He conducts interdisciplinary research and uses large-scale publicly available datasets to understand tradeoffs and synergies between conservation and development outcomes. In this conversation, they primarily focused on Johan's work on the impact evaluation of the zero hunger program in Brazil and his parallel research exploring the links between forests and livelihoods in the global south. For both these projects, Johan conducted large-scale research and worked with big datasets. As we discussed these projects, it was interesting to learn what working on a large scale with big datasets looks like, including its advantages and also some of the key limitations. Johan shared that in his research on the impact evaluation of the zero hunger program, a program that was implemented to meet the sustainable development goal of reducing hunger in Brazil, he found that in addition to addressing hunger, the program also improves households' access to nutrition and address the supply chain issues of agriculture production. Johan emphasized that it is important to evaluate and understand the multidimensional impacts of social protection programs so they can be implemented to their fullest potential and yield maximum benefits. For his research on exploring forest-livelihood linkages in the global south, Johan's research showed that forest management and restoration programs that prioritized community rights are more likely to reduce deforestation and poverty and eventually align with global goals for climate mitigation, environmental justice, and sustainable development. Divya and Johan wrapped up the conversation with a discussion on Johan's upcoming research project, which aims to examine the drivers of reforestation and sustainable forest transitions in India, Nepal, Brazil, and Mexico.
