Your Genetics are a key part of my TUSHY Method (Y = Your genetics) and I'm so honored to have Dena Goldberg (also known far and wide as Dena DNA) joining me today! Some of the questions I know you have on your mind about genetics are: Nothing came back on my 23 & Me test. I'm good to go, right? Answer: Not so fast. 23&Me relies on "SNP testing," and only looks at "very specific bookmarks on very random genes." You'll want a more thorough test for preconception screening. I don't have any history of disease in my family. Do I need to do genetic testing? Answer: It's a good idea. There are syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome that are asymptomatic in 90% of people who are carriers. You'll want to know if you have those genetic markers before passing them on to your embryo and child. Can you make sure my embryo doesn't have autism? Answer: Autism is actually a description of a constellation of symptoms. So it's not an underlying condition in and of itself. There are hundreds to thousands of genetic causes to autism. We can catch some of these cases, but not all. Autism is multifactorial, meaning that many of these cases are probably caused by a combination of genetics and environment or in other words, nature and nurture together. Today's guest, Carol Graham, shared her story of overcoming rheumatoid arthritis, ovarian cancer, and her husband's devastating car accident in episode 107. Be sure to check it out! Carol is an author, host of the Never Ever Give Up podcast, and a health coach. In this episode, Carol shares a way of life that she believes is a game changer. So much so that she published her book, Pray the Answer Not the Problem, in 2023, which describes how we must pray the promises God has in His Word rather than begging God for help. Praying the answer and not the problem may be a shift in how you've prayed in the past. It's based on believing God's promises and that God has given you authority and power of any challenges that intersect your path. That power and authority come from His Word, Jesus' blood, and Jesus' name. After reading Carol's book, I prayed by speaking aloud verses that related to a current challenge. I thanked God for the promises of healing, and how He fights for me, and how He is my inner strength. I'm still waiting for my answer. I believe it's coming. Carol said in her story interview, “God is never late. He's always on time.” I've found that to be true. How about you?Notable quotes from the episode with Carol Graham:·         “God responds to two things: His Word and your faith.”·         “Who are we giving top billing to? . . . Stop recognizing who the enemy is. Start recognizing who God is.”·         “Whatever problem we have, there is an answer in the Word.”·         “God equips us when we choose to trust Him . . Opportunities come in discomfort.Bible verses:·         Luke 1:45 is Carol's life verse/fight verse: “Blessed is she who believed that there shall be a fulfillment of that which was promised her by the LORD.”·         2 Timothy 2:1·         Romans 8:11Grab Carol's books on Amazon. It's that time of the week again, and we've found a trove of data about how much money sugar babies can expect to get out of sugar daddies for a regular "arrangement." Answer: "Not much." I remember in my younger wealthy days a friend pointed out to me that he could "tip every cab driver $100 from now on" and never run out of money. You'd probably have to up that to $200 to account for Bidenflation, but the point remains the same. These ladies aren't really what I'd call "well paid." Set against the minimum wage in California, which is set to rise to $22, $2000 or $3000 per month doesn't sound like a lot. I once misplaced many dozens of times that in a cupboard. We talk about sex too. A man is confounded by a friend hiring sex workers when he wasn't ready to see said friend have an erection, much less an orgasm. Another likes to wash his penis very very quickly after sex. Find Dennis Mark:https://www.redeemedtx.org/ We asked a Human Trafficking Revover Expert Your Questions and this is how he responded: Question: Are not Christians simply enforcing their worldview and religion on other people when they force laws on Sex Trafficking? Answer: Most of the people who use this verbiage are oftentimes the ones benefiting from the exploitation, mainly the traffickers (pimps) and the consumers (a.k.a. johns). Question: I mean, you can't legislate morality, right? Answer: No, but you can legislate and prosecute exploitation. Question: How should the Church respond to people who are actively being trafficked? Answer: Everything survivors of human trafficking need to be successful is sitting in the pews of our church. Overcoming their own fears, moving from being paralyzed to engagement, and living out their faith at the level they understand the Word. Question: What if they are still committed to their lifestyle? Answer: One of the biggest mistakes and myths about trafficking is this idea of “choice.” So much more to that… Question: How can a Christian respond effectively to those who are being trafficked? Answer: With the fruit of the spirit, the ideas of love found in 1 Corinthians 13 and holistic healing…understanding and meeting a person's emotional, physical, relational, and spiritual needs as they are affected by trauma, and yes, trauma affects each of these areas. Question: Isn't this an issue of the heart and not an issue for government intervention as far as laws are concerned? Answer: Yes, it is an issue of the heart, but it should be the heart of our elected officials to use their heart and provide a compassionate response to the exploitation of the innocent. In 2000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act was passed and signed into law to provide the prevention of trafficking, protection of all victims, guidelines for prosecution, and provision of services. In this law was built the ability to reauthorize this act and amend it with improvements as more knowledge is gained. Question: Don't laws prohibiting a commodity simply create a black market? Answer: It is already illegal and it is a “underground” market or a viable sub-culture. What is dangerous is legalizing it so that the demand increases and thereby increasing the need for supply which typically involves younger victims. Question: Shouldn't these women be able to just walk out the door? Answer: Yes, but it is extremely important to understand the reality of coercion. Question: If they are really being forced into this, why not just call the police? Answer: I teach a six-hour course on the realities of survivor care and two-hours is dedicated to just answering this question. It's not about choice, its about control and eliminating options. Question: Pornography is usually practiced between consenting adults, why should we prohibit anything to do with artistic expression? Answer: Again, not expression when coercion and exploitation are involved. Question: Everyone needs to sow their wild oats and experience sexuality of various kinds before they settle down in a marriage. What's wrong with engaging in these acts with these people who are doing it to my understanding willingly if this ultimately benefits my future marriage since I won't want to do it later. And if men can't get sex, doesn't the Sex Trade also reduce violence against women when men can just pay for it when they couldn't get it while dating? Answer: I'm not sure I can good conscience combine the words “Sex Trade” and “reducing violence” in the same sentence. How dark do you want me to share? Question: Effectively, for all of the above reasons, isn't the Sex Trade a societal good? Answer: Effectively, NO. Question: Doesn't the Constitution provide freedom of association? Answer: Yes, and I assume you mean Intimate Freedom of Association. But exploitation crosses a line into the violation of the 13th Amendment and the aforementioned TVPA. Question: How is allowing sex work any different from any other form of occupation? Answer: I'm going to repeat this premise often, “Not choice or an occupation, but exploitation.” Question: “If Houston is at the top of the sex trade for national and international exporting what does the increase in volume of illegal border crossings mean for your ministry, the Human Trafficking Industrial Complex, and Political Structure? What policy measures, in your opinion, should be considered given current circumstances?” Answer: Not sure where this information is found, but two fundamental problems exist with the statement, 1) “sex trade for national and international exporting”, the reality of sex trafficking in Houston is that rough average of 85% of victims identified are not international victims, and 2) “at the top of the sex trade”, where and how Houston ranks has been grossly misrepresented, especially as “number 1”. In 2019, the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Texas prosecuted 42% of trafficking related crimes in the United States. Does that mean we are worse? The better and more accurate answer is that because of the length of time the Human Trafficking Rescue Alliance of the SDTX and the experience level of 37 law enforcement agencies with roughly 196 LE personnel means we have the knowledge and knowhow to identify, investigate, and prosecute trafficking cases, and with the addition of the United Against Human Trafficking Coalition with its 57 service provider agencies provides a greater response to survivor needs and healing. Question: “Some of these women can only make this kind of money doing sex work? Why would you rob them of an income?” Answer: There's that ugly word again, “sex work”, the heart of exploitation is to generate income not for the victim, but for the trafficker. Question: “Being trafficked devalues the Human Being, how can we restore the self-worth and identity of an Image Bearer of God who has lived through these experiences?” Answer: Get educated to the reality of human trafficking (not watching bad Hollywood interpretations) and the difficulty of restoration and engage. I would encourage you listeners to seek out reputable organizations and get involved, we are always looking for volunteers and staff to be engaged in the fight. Don't start something new, join someone already engaged in the fight who has the right knowledge, understanding, and reputation of work. Find Dennis Mark:https://www.redeemedtx.org/

Joe Armstrong makes his first appearance of 2022 on PJP this week, and he and Jessica discuss three of the biggest current legal topics. First, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin took the stand in her defamation suit against the New York Times this week. How did she do? [ANSWER: Not great.] We also recently learned that although Donald Trump may or may not have been flushing official documents down a White House toilet, he most definitely improperly took some top secret documents with him when he left for Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Lastly, the Supreme Court this week ruled in Alabama's favor when it came to a recent challenge to congressional redistricting despite a violation of the Voting Rights Act, and Jessica shares some theories about how this "shadow docket" decision may be related to SCOTUS' recent YOLO energy.

Question: What should you believe in Politics and Media? Answer: Not much. The problem is that politicians and the media generally tell us what we want to hear. They don't make money, and they don't get elected otherwise. As long as we are smart and demand truth, well, that is what we'll get. The second we are moved by something else, well, we lose truth. I spoke last week on George Washington's farewell address. He wrote on how keeping the freedoms of liberty demanded a people shaped by morality and religion. I believe this is why, to keep us demanding the right things. Unfortunately, today, most people are driven by their lesser angels. Join us as we discuss this and more on Today's The Pilgrim's Odyssey podcast.

In Andrew Nester’s own words, communication is what drives people. It motivates them. So why do we spend so little time creating and delivering new and better ways for us to communicate with other people? Andrew is the CMO of SocialChorus and on this episode of Marketing Trends, he discusses the increased need for communication platforms, why your marketing teams shouldn’t always be personalized and why you need to be both data and experience-driven in order to succeed. Main Takeaways Communication is key: There’s no doubt that communication drives business. In order to drive people to do tasks, you have to communicate with them, but the amount of time that goes into creating communication and delivering it is shockingly low and that needs to change. Personalization is Not Always the Answer: Not all your marketing efforts need to be focused on highly- personalized and individualized content. When you create these segmented materials for individuals, it creates silos amongst stakeholders. This becomes a detriment because they only see their perspective on the platform. Data Moves the Needle: You need to always be thinking about what the data says and allow those insights to drive your decision- making process. Allow the data to tell you what you need to be testing and then cross-check that with your experience. --- Marketing Trends podcast is brought to you by Salesforce. Several questions will help us get to know the four King Georges (Kings George?) who ruled Britain from 1714 to 1830.Question 1: How did these guys come to rule England?Answer: Parliament insisted on a Protestant heir, and after the death of Queen Anne it turned out George of Hanover got the job.Question 2: What was George I like as a King of England?Answer: Not good! He preferred Hanover and spoke little English, making him unpopular. His scandalous treatment of his wife didn't help his reputation in England. He had a terrible relationship with his son and heir.Question 3: So was George II any better?Answer: Not really! He had a terrible relationship with his father AND with his son. His son died before he did, so George II left the crown to his grandson.Question 4: What’s the real deal with George III? Answer: Well, he'll never be a hero to Americans, but he was the best of the Georges. Still, many were relieved when he went completely mad and retired from public life.Question 5: Prince Regent? What’s that? Who is the King?Answer: Prince George (yes, another one) ruled in behalf of his father, George III, as Prince Regent. He lived a scandalous life and was obese and sick by the time he finally became King George IV. His only child preceded him in death, so the crown passed to his brother William. And that's the end of the Georgians!

Today I wanna talk to you about why they didn’t buy your product…    I'm excited about today's episode. I just got off a webinar and I've done this webinar three-ish times now.    Two of those times have been in the last few days… Come to think of it, it’s probably my fourth time doing it.    But what's interesting about it is… When you do a pitch over and over and over again, you start to notice things that make it more or less effective.    So I’ve been able to see what things make this pitch MORE effective.    And I've been changing things like crazy over the last four tries.    When I did the webinar two days ago, we generated $10,000. I wouldn’t be shocked if this next one does $30 or $40 grand.    KNOWING WHY THEY DIDN’T BUY YOUR PRODUCT   One of the keys to understanding why they didn’t buy your product is knowing how frequently you’re pitching.    Some people like, "Well, my pitch is not amazing" Because they've only done their MLM pitch twice… It doesn't quite work like that.    You need to be doing A LOT of these.    VOLUME MATTERS!    … Especially when it comes to pitching. You get better at it the more you do it.    That’s just ONE lesson I wanted to toss your way today.    But I have an even BIGGER one for you ;)    So let me tell you another story (you know I'm obsessed with old school marketing stories)...    Whether you’re:     Listening   Watching   Reading    To this right now… You may have seen the movie The Greatest Showman.    That was a good movie.    The Greatest Showman is about P.T. Barnum's life. The issue is that the movie is that it’s largely made up.    It's a great movie. I still recommend watching it if you've never seen it.    But Hollywood portrays P.T. Barnum as being this young father trying to provide for a young family by buying a circus.    #TotallyMadeUp   The Circus was his retirement project much later on in life.   What P.T. Barnum was really known for (and what his entire career was based around) was his museum.    Tons of people came to his museum. It was a Museum of random and rare artifacts.    So the name of the game for Barnum was… “How can I get people to physically show up to my museum on a consistent basis?”    One of the strategies that Barnum used to get more people to come to his museum is actually shown in the movie.    THE JENNY LIND CAMPAIGN   In the movie, Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum meets a lady named Jenny Lind.    Jenny Lind is this AMAZING, famous opera singer from Europe. She has a massive following.    Everyone in Europe is like, "Oh my gosh, I love Jenny Lind. Jenny Lind is incredible."   So P.T. Barnum has an idea, "Let's bring her to America… And maybe she'll help me fill my museum."    And so that's exactly what he does.   He reaches out to Jenny Lind and says, "Hey, would you come over to America and sing your amazing opera songs over in there?"    They don’t show this part in the movie.    P.T. Barnum is walking down the street and he starts talking to people about the fact that he's bringing the famous European opera singer, Jenny Lind, to America.    But no one knows who she is…    He finally gets to a doorman who opens the door for him and he goes, "I'm bringing Jenny Lind to America."    And the doorman goes, "Who's Jenny Lind?"    And Barnum freaks out!   He’s gone into DEBT just to bring Lind to America and he realizes that nobody knows who she is.    P.T. BARNUM’S CAMPAIGN   So what does Barnum do? He has to do is create a STORY… A campaign around Lind so that people know who she is when he brings her to America.   Barnum hires 46 reporters. Those 46 reporters start feeding the media stories about Jenny Lind. Stories are about Jenny Lind's:   Likes   Dislikes   What she loves   Her personal opinions on social matters   … They create an entire character around Jenny Lind in the press and she's not even there yet.    It’s all for the purpose of educating the media on who she is.    Barnum even goes so far as to have Jenny give a farewell speech in Europe so that he can make another story about her in the American press.    Barnum had also created so Jenny Lind swag:    Clothing   Bakery items   … This was a big deal.    By the time Lind showed up… There were 30,000 people waiting for her at the docks.   WHY DOES A CAMPAIGN DIE?     Now… This is where the story gets interesting.    20,000 people follow her to her hotel.    There's so much buzz!    P.T. Barnum keeps selling out all these stages. "Come hear the amazing Jenny Lind sing."    He had all these AMAZING campaigns and they're making so much money. It's awesome.    But Jenny Lind gets a little bit greedy.    She believes that it's her voice that's getting all these people to come see her. So she does one fateful thing.    She talks to P.T. Barnum and says, "Barnum, I'm gonna go out on my own. I'm going to fill stages and stadiums on my own. I don't need you."    And she left.   She thought that her voice was the reason that people followed her. But what happened was, she went off on her own and couldn't fill a single auditorium.    Time, after time, after time, she tried to fill these auditoriums, and NOBODY came.    Some people would come… But not enough to sustain it. Eventually, it all died because there wasn’t any BUZZ anymore.    P.T. Barnum wasn’t saying anything because he's no longer part of the action.    This is very fascinating… Because Lind ended up leaving.    Her business had dropped sooo fast. Not that much earlier, 30,000 people greeted her on the docks as she comes in… But almost nobody noticed when she got back on the ship and ent back to Europe.   DO YOU KNOW WHY THEY DIDN’T BUY YOUR PRODUCT?    QUESTION: Why do I tell you the story?    ANSWER: Not just because this is an amazing, very fascinating and powerful story.    What you have to understand is that MOST people in MLM do the same thing. "My product is the reason that people are showing up."   No, it's not.   Why they didn’t buy your product has NOTHING to do with the product itself.    When you hear your corporate headquarter say something like, "The product is so good, all you have to do is get it in front of people."    That is the BIGGEST pile of steaming crap I have ever heard in my life!   The first time I heard that I wanted to hit somebody.    Products DON’T sell like that.     Jenny Lind was an amazing opera singer. One of the most famous opera singers in all of the world at the time. She was huge.    P.T. Barnum made her huge.    Lind thought she was the product and that people wanted to see her.    But what did she forget to do?    She didn't do any campaigns   There were no sales messages   She didn't feed the press anything   … She literally stopped marketing.    *THAT* is why her business died.   This is one of the most powerful lessons I can teach you.    DO YOU WANNA KNOW WHY THEY DIDN’T BUY YOUR PRODUCT?   This is the reason why people can't sell their stuff AND the reason why they didn’t buy your product.    People are like, "Well, I can't use the Internet to sell my product." [chuckle]    Neither could P.T. Barnum! There are A LOT of other ways.    Most of the time, MLM’s say you can’t use the internet as a scare tactic.    ANYONE can use the internet… Just don't say your MLM's name.    You can still generate leads. That's what I do all the time.    Then I sell products on the back end and it works great.    Today, someone automatically joined my downline. Someone I’ve NEVER…    1. Met 2. Seen before 3. Pitched 4. Talked to   And that’s what I help a lot of people do. I automate HUGE portions of their business.   And I automated me automating it!   The internet sooo powerful, it's ridiculous.   I KNOW WHY THEY DIDN’T BUY YOUR PRODUCT   What I want you to understand, and what I want you to take away from this whole episode is knowing why they didn’t buy your product.    I want you to look at your MLM's products, whether it's physical, digital, whatever it might be.    If you're like "I'm selling a service, not a product." That's STILL a product!    Whatever your offer is, look at it, and ask yourself, “Am I relying on the product to sell itself?”    Understand that this game DOES NOT work very well for an individual who has no idea how to:     Sell   Create campaigns   Create products   Generate a buzz like P.T. Barnum did for Jenny Lind   Your product is NOT why anybody buys. Why they didn’t buy your product comes down to the sales message. They buy because of the campaign.    The offer is what fulfills the promise that your sales message made.    When you understand the role of the offer and the sales message, MLM gets really easy.    MLM CAMPAIGN LESSONS   There are FOUR lessons I want you to take away from this.    #1 Stop relying on your product to sell itself.    #2 Create a campaign for your product.   #3 Perfect your sales messages and get good at telling them to people.    #4 Create noise around your product. Generate a positive buzz just like Barnum did.    REMEMBER: A campaign is nothing more than orchestrated noise. It’s exactly like what P.T. Barnum was doing with the news reporters.    He's built up all this pressure by using the newspaper to tell everyone when Jenny Lind was coming.    QUESTION: What does that do?    ANSWER: It gets people to show up on that date.   It’s no different because the internet exists today. Most of the time, the people who think it’s different, don't sell anything. THAT’S why they didn’t buy your product.    One of my favorite things to do is look back in history and see some of the ways people were forced to sell before the internet existed.    If you can understand the patterns they used to generate a buzz, and then add the internet… The internet stops being a distraction.   WHAT DO I LOOK FOR IN A CAMPAIGN?    I want you to be able to sit back and say,  "The reason I’m not selling the way I want is that I've never planned a sales message or a campaign with intent."   Someone who once interviewed me asked, "Stephen, what should people consider when they start trying to find an MLM to join?"    And I was like, "Man, I don't even think about the product that much. As long as it's good, does what it says, the company is ethical and moral, who cares what it is?"    Yes, I want it to:   Be amazing   Deliver on what they say    And I want the company to over-deliver and have a serving culture    But besides that, I'm looking to see if it’s…    Campaign-able   Marketable   Can I create noise around it   … Who cares how good it is if I can't sell it?    Anyway, if you enjoyed this and you wanna learn how to do those kinds of things, go to secretmlmhacks.com and grab the course. I would love to have you in it.    We’re creating a really cool thing for you soon. It's not done yet… But we have spent over a quarter-million dollars in Facebook ads to generate leads for the MLM that I'm in, profitably.    We put a dollar in and we get three to five back out… Which is crazy. All the stuff that I do has almost made a million bucks and then we spent a quarter-million generating that.    We’ve decided to make a book about all the MLM ads that we've run on Facebook so we can show you why they work, how we’re able to run them, why Facebook didn't shut me down, and why my MLM didn't shut me down.    It's gonna be called MLMadsthatwon.com.    WHY THEY DIDN’T BUY YOUR PRODUCT   I know it's tough to find people to pitch after your warm market dries up, right?    That moment when you finally run out of family and friends to pitch. I don't see many up lines teaching legitimate lead strategies today.    After years of being a lead funnel builder online I got sick of the garbage strategies most MLMs have been teaching their recruits for decades.    Whether you simply want more leads to pitch or an automated MLM funnel, head over to secretmlmhacks.com and join the next FREE training.    There you're gonna learn the hidden revenue model that only the top MLMers have been using to get paid regardless if you join them.    Learn the 3-step system I use to auto recruit my downline of big producers WITHOUT friends or family even knowing that I'm in MLM.    If you want to do the same for yourself, head over to secretmlmhacks.com.    Again that’s secretmlmhacks.com.

Today I wanna teach you guys HOW to launch an MLM product.   I'm actually really excited to teach you how to launch an MLM product. A lot of research and time has gone into planning and putting this together.    I wanna do a couple of things here...   First of all, I want to bring attention to and help you think about how Hollywood launches a movie.    Now think about this with me for a moment.    There are really cool movies that are coming out soon, and I LOVE going to movie theaters! I love...    The experience   When you walk in the light is a little bit dim, which makes the pupils dilate a little bit more (they do that and restaurants also)   The ambiance    There's a lot to it!   I'm actually a theme park junky as well. I'm not gonna lie... I love Disney.    I'm that guy that would totally go on rides by myself because I love the experience of it.    I love that before you even get on a ride they start pre-framing you for this big build-up.    HOW DOES HOLLYWOOD LAUNCH A MOVIE?   Right now you’re probably thinking, "What does that to have to do with what you're talking about?"    Just think about this with me for just a moment.    The way Hollywood launches a movie uses very much the same kind of methods.    They both use:    Anticipation   Build-up   Hollywood is always putting out small minute-long previews a year before the film comes out.   They probably don't even have the movie done… But they're saying, "Hey here's when it's coming out".   Sometimes it'll just be something as simple as the title.    They did this with one of the most recent Star Wars movies. They did a trailer six months ahead of time and all it did was play the iconic Star Wars music with the title and date overlayed.   And the crowd went ballistic!    I was like, "Oh my gosh, that's awesome."    There was NO story, it didn't say anything!    Now I want you to think about this a moment…    WHY is this such a powerful and impactful thing? What happened six months later?    They release a little bit of a story, usually about the protagonist.    They tell a little bit of background and they add a little bit of conflict in.    None of us like conflict but can you imagine how boring life would be if there wasn't any?    We do want a little bit of drama in our lives, whether or not you're willing to admit it ;)   If everything was easy 24/7   There were no challenges   No trials, nothing in our life   The salt of life would be gone.    THE KEY TO LAUNCHING A PRODUCT   Think about this with me for a moment…    Three months later and they release another preview.    Every single preview up until then has been giving you a specific date (or at least season if it's like a year out), "It's coming out on this day at this time".   **This is very very key to understand.**   They build up pressure and they build up pressure and they build up pressure up until the specific day…    THEN they'll start releasing:   Pre-booked tickets   Specific experiences that you can have with the movie   Now when the day of the actual movie comes up there's a HUGE amount of pressure that's built on a specific day in time like, "BOOM".    As a society, even if you're not a huge movie-goer there's a big percentage of people who have been educated on what the movie is and what it's gonna be about.    There's open loops like crazy, so there's a lot of curiosity and everyone's like, "I gotta go on that day" right?    But before that comes up… They're gonna get the actors to go and hang out on night shows. They're gonna go on:   Jimmy Fallon's Show   The Tonight Show   Today Show   … They're building up pressure for this thing and at the end of each of those shows, they're like, "Make sure you go see the show coming out this day, back to you guys".   If you look at what's happening, they're orchestrating this incredible event. Not at a certain location, not at one spot, but they're orchestrating an event… They're orchestrating NOISE.    And that's what campaigns are, they're building a campaign.   THE POWER OF A BOX OFFICE LAUNCH   Now, all of this pressure gets built up and it pushes towards this specific day and then "BAM", box office weekend happens.    They make so much money on the initial weekend that the movie's open, that there's usually not that much money left...    I mean there's a lot of money, but nothing like that huge initial burst, "BOOM!"    That huge initial burst pays for…   Not just the crews   It pays for ALL the stuff   …  Then they just live on the cash flow that's gonna come from the remainder of that film's life.    THAT’S BIG.    Obviously, this is NOT a new concept… But think about that. Most brand new products that there's a lot of buzz around, they ALL follow that same pattern!   THESE GUYS KNEW HOW TO LAUNCH   Three of my favorite guys EVER are:   Albert Lasker   P.T. Barnum   Claude Hopkins   SIDE NOTE: Have you seen the movie "The Greatest Showman"?    That movie is largely made up… He started the circus as his retirement project NOT to take care of his young family. Hollywood completely made that up.    Here’s some facts about P.T. Barnum:   Most of P.T. Barnum's career was done around museums   P.T. Barnum was the first guy to bring an elephant to America (so he made a huge deal around that)   Anyway… These guys lived INCREDIBLE lives and they ALL understood the same principle of building a pressure.   Stick with me because this is very, very powerful and will help you understand HOW to launch an MLM product.    I KNOW one of the reasons why a lot of people don't do well in MLM is because they don't know what I'm talking about right here.    When P.T. Barnum first brought an elephant to America, he wanted to make a big deal about it. He wanted to make a huge deal about it.   THE P.T BARNUM STYLE LAUNCH   So how did P.T. Barnum launch this elephant to the world?   He was rich a rich dude. He's the second millionaire in America.    One of his houses on the outskirts of New York was right next to these busy train tracks that led into the center of New York.   When he brought this elephant to America, he decided to plow his fields with an elephant right next to the train tracks.    The funny thing is… They were not plowing ANYTHING. They were fake plowing! NOTHING was planted there!    But he continued to plow his field with an elephant next to that incredibly busy train track until over 60 reporters showed up and they ALL captured the story. These reporters ran the story all over the place.    Only once he felt he had got enough buzz around him and his museum… THEN he finally stopped fake plowing his field with an elephant and sold the elephant.   But that technique created a HUGE boost in revenue for his museum. He kept doing this over and over and over again, every single time he started selling something brand new.    This is a BIG lesson in HOW to launch an MLM product and I'm trying to help you understand it.    This is one of the reasons why people don't buy from MLM-ers even though you have a great product… Because you don't understand the principle of a campaign.    Every time P.T. Barnum had a new product, he would create a campaign around the product.    HOW NOT TO LAUNCH AN MLM PRODUCT   Albert Lasker would do the exact same thing.    PT Barnum is famous for another campaign he did around a fake Mermaid that was "caught off the coast of Fiji". He created this whole ruse.   I'm not here to say whether or not that was good or bad… But the principle behind it is that whenever you have a product, you need to create a campaign.   Imagine if Hollywood spent $100 million dollars putting together a two-hour movie… And the first time you hear about it, is the day it goes to the movie theater.    QUESTION: How successful that would be?   ANSWER: Not very successful.    But most MLM-ers do that with their own MLMs product. What I'm trying to help you understand here is HOW to launch an MLM product. And to do that, you need to behave like a brand new MLM coming onto the market.    You need to build:   Anticipation   A campaign   All this pressure!    … It's orchestrated noise, it's orchestrated pressure.    You need to behave like a brand new MLM.    Right now you’re probably thinking, "But Stephen, my MLM's not brand new."    Yeah… But it might be new to all the people that you talk to about it.    There are TONS of MLMs out there I don't know about. TONS.   And I'm in this space with you!   You need to be building up noise and pressure and anticipation around the fact that there is this AMAZING thing coming out and, for a limited window of time, "box office weekend", you can participate in this great experience.   HOW TO LAUNCH AN MLM PRODUCT   It's not enough to…    Have a great product   Always let something be available   You need to take it off the market or say it's only available at this certain price/discount at this certain time.    When you do that, you're behaving like a brand new company entering the marketplace.    Creating buzz, creating a campaign, on a specific date, specific time, for a certain amount of time, a certain window… And then take it off.    I'm not saying to stop selling the product… But for new people that you're gonna acquire there's nothing wrong with opening up the window and saying, "Hey, the promo is only available for this amount of time. You can still buy it, but the promo's only available here.”   QUESTION: What do most MLMs do to their own distributors?    "Hey, there's a new flavor coming out… But it's only for this time."    This is a skill set that most MLMs know very well.    YOU’RE the distribution channel… They actually call you a distributor. YOU’RE the one that goes and buys it.    HOW TO LAUNCH AN MLM PRODUCT SUCCESSFULLY   What I need to understand and the point of this episode is that you can step back and say, "Oh my gosh, I've never behaved like a brand new business.”   You're technically a new company… But you DON’T enter the marketplace like a brand new company.    You gotta build up the pressure around that and then turn around and say, "Hey, only available for this time."   Remember what P.T. Barnum did with his elephant?    He found something SHOCKING - an elephant   He put it in front of distribution - a train.    You can build your own distribution channels, but it is waaay faster to hook into a distribution that already exists.   Find your train and start putting something out there and keep doing it until you feel like you've generated enough a BUZZ around the thing that you sell. This is big.    It's one of the reasons why most people don’t know how to launch an MLM product and they don't have any success with this stuff.    It's because they've never taken the time to sit back and actually orchestrate a campaign.    They don't behave like Hollywood releasing a movie.    Please, please behave like Hollywood releasing the movie.    You’ll find an insane amount of power will come in your pocket because most people don't know how to launch an MLM product with that one skill set.   A campaign is nothing more than orchestrated noise towards a specific date.   HOW TO LAUNCH AN MLM PRODUCT WITHOUT FACEBOOK   Facebook campaigns… That's NOT a campaign.     Facebook is destroying the term campaign, they're killing it.    A campaign is NOT an ad. It can be part of a campaign, but it's NOT a campaign.    It's like saying a tire is a car.   No, a tire is part of a car, but it's not the car.   It’s the same thing with Facebook ads… Paid advertising is not the only way to get traffic.    In fact, it's one of the weakest forms of it up until a certain point, and only then it becomes very powerful.   Think about the old school guys like P.T. Barnum, Clyde Hopkins, Albert Lasker.    These are the old-school marketers that changed the way we do a lot of stuff now. They didn't have all that tech… So how did they generate noise?    ANSWER: They were pros at creating buzz around a certain date and time with a certain message.    You've likely been given a script or message from your MLM   You probably have an awesome offer because your product is amazing    The reason why most people don't get paid in MLM for a while is that they don't know how to launch an MLM product and create campaigns.   HOW TO LAUNCH AN MLM PRODUCT STEVE LARSEN STYLE   What I would do is…     I would interview lots of people   Tell everybody that all the interviews are gonna be released on a certain date and time   Sell your product on the back of it   That’s almost guaranteed to generate a spike in sales.   The whole point of this episode is to help you understand why you need to behave like a new company entering the marketplace and how to launch an MLM product.    You can do it every quarter or every month, or however often you choose to do it.   Those spikes and sales is usually what cover my business expenses for quite some time… And then I live off of the cash flow.    This is a general business principle.    That's some gold nuggets right there.   LEARN HOW TO LAUNCH AN MLM PRODUCT   Probably the biggest question I get is: “Steve, how are you using the internet for your personal MLM today?”    To be clear, I am, but it's HOW that matters, and it's HOW that you're probably interested in.    Facebook doesn't easily let you drive ads to MLM, and most MLMs won't even let you say their name on the internet, which is stupid.    Despite those and other forces, I am using the internet to grow my personal downline and sell products.    MLM is changing, and you're probably feeling that, right? It's why I created a little mini-course in a bundle… To show you HOW I'm doing this all today.    It's called The MLM Funnel and you can get it at themlmfunnel.com.    I'm doing this because you might not know WHERE to start in all of this and, secondly, because there's a cool new book by Russell Brunson called Network Marketing Secrets that I want you to go get.    He's a cool guy, so I'm talking about this book a lot lately. I'm also going to give you a little bribe so you go get the book through my link.    How evil of me.    When you go to themlmfunnel.com and get Russell's new book, Network Marketing Secrets, I'm going to give you my Pre-built Recruiting Funnel Template, the Hack MLM Downline Onboarding Course, which is how I auto-train my downline when they join my team.    ALSO, a discount ticket to my next event called OfferMind so that you can learn to outvalue your upline and downline.    If you want all this for FREE, just go to themlmfunnel.com now and get a crash course into prebuilt funnel templates that I'm using with my own downline now.    Again, just go to themlmfunnel.com and buy Russell Brunson's new book there, and I'll send you all those bonuses for free.

Show Notes: Episode 173 “Cold Hearted Snake” This week Host Dave Bledsoe is secretly recorded during a production meeting saying a terrible thing, only to immediately say it publically when asked about the tape. On the show this week, we talk tapes, who said what, to whom and when and whether or not those tapes will even matter when they heard. (Answer: Not in the in the least.) Along the way we update the Presidential Lie Count which unlike Trump's approval ratings is only going up! From there, we tell the tale of Omarosa's second tenure in the White House (That's right she worked for Clinton AND Gore!) and her sudden yet entirely expected termination in the Situation Room. (What kind of situation requires Omarosa in the Situation Room, a barbed retort on Real Housewives?) We ask the question America is dying to know: Did our President say the N-Word. (Hint: A lot.) We try to decide is Omarosa is at all credible in her claims. (Absolutely not, but that doesn't make them untrue.) We also discuss what kind of person betrays their own people so they can land a cherry job with no real responsibilities, great pay and a chance to make millions in the future. (Answer: Every goddamn one of you!) Finally, we explain why everyone seems to be turning on Trump whenever it becomes convenient. (Hint: legless reptiles.) Our Sponsor this week is No Shit Sherlocks, pointing out the the obvious to the oblivious! We open the show with Omarosa defending the indefensible and close with the strangest cover song we've discovered in the history of this show. We think you will enjoy it, unlike the rest of the show. Question: What do two rogue military doctors, cloned slave laborers from the Moon, a disabled Amish man, a Syrian cocktail waitress, English arms dealers and a black Russian gangster all have in common? Answer: Not much! We watched ‘Mute’, another Netflix original film written and directed by Duncan Jones (you might know his late father) and boy howdy! do we have some things to say about this film. Is it worth watching despite some serious problems with the most fundamental aspects of filmmaking? Listen and find out!

"The Kids Are Alright."   Or so Pete Townsend says, but "The Who" might also fit as to what Eric Bledsoe is still saying about Terry Rozier over a pair of devastating games. Adding to that Jaylen Brown's 30 point game 2 and Jon and Justin are feeling damn good about the Celtics chances of moving on to round 2.   In this vacation sponsored addition of Celtics Stuff Live, Jon and Justin broke down the first two games of the series, and looked into why trading Rozier or Brown would be so difficult in a deal for Kawhi Leonard.    To wrap up the show, Justin and Jon looked at the remainder of the series and how long the Joe Prunty Era will last in Milwaukee. On this episode, Karen and Kathleen have their very first Ask Us Anything! The Wellness Business Podcast has received lots of great feedback and questions from listeners, but those questions don't always require a full podcast to answer. So today, Karen and Kathleen are here to give you a shout out AND answer your burning questions during their Ask Us Anything. Question #1: I have questions regarding blogs and email content. Can you build a business without a blog? Personally, I am not a fan of blogs. I don't have the time to read them. And find more and more people who are tired of another blog. - Laurie Karen's Answer: Not all business techniques feel authentic to every business owner. By identifying that this isn't a strong suit for you or how you want to compete in the field, you're taking a step towards making yourself and your business more authentic and individual. Having a blog is not the only way to build a business, but you want to have a way to deliver content to your potential clients. Kathleen's Answer: Free content is how people are going to find you and learn more about what you do. It doesn't have to be in a typical blog format, and it's a good first step that you've realized that type of free content doesn't appeal to you for your business. If you don't like doing it you won't be consistent with it, which is one of the most important things. Question #2: What are ways to outsource to reduce stress and have better time management? - Thomas             Karen's Answer: Make sure you know what your expectations are for the outsourced project, communication is key in getting back quality product. The free resource below will help you through every step of hiring someone for an outsourced project so that you can have peace of mind in getting things done.                      Kathleen's Answer: At some point you do have to delegate tasks, otherwise you will start to stall instead of growing your business. A great book on this topic is Virtual Freedom by Chris Ducker. Check out this free checklist for hiring virtual support for your business: How to Outsource Like a Pro: 10 Steps to Hiring Virtual Support That Save You Time & Money Question #3: What would you work on first, your freebie and email marketing or setting up your low priced course? - Carrie             Karen's Answer: This is such an important question, because it boils down to where should you be spending your time and resources when first starting up your business. You need an audience to market your program to, but you also need a program to market. You should always be growing your email list, every single day there should be a way for new clients to find your free offer. For more, check out Karen's Step Into More Profits Program.                        Kathleen's Answer: Everyone is at a different point in their personal journey, so not everyone will be ready to work with your business right now. But the bigger your email list is, the more potential customers you have for your program. Question #4: I want to do a short term challenge, but I know you suggest having a closed Facebook group for community support for the participants. Since I don't have a big following, how do I create a successful Facebook group? What if I email people telling them we will have a closed Facebook group for support and then no one shows up? I'm nervous to offer a challenge and have like 4 people join and think what a flop because there was no support system like they expected. Can I offer a challenge with no social media support or Facebook groups? - Jessica              Karen's Answer: There is a chance that your first challenge, it could only be a few people who show up. But those few (or even just one) won't be thinking about how lame it is, rather that they will be getting more of your individual attention. Which is a great thing and can be a wonderful experience for those customers.   Karen's Facebook Group             Kathleen's Answer: It helps to know your audience and what they want, so you can run the program and market it in a way that will grab their attention.  Know what your ideals clients are struggling with and how you can help, identify how your challenge will help them with those challenges. A great resource for building your program is Kathleen's Done For You Program.       Kathleen's Facebook Group Question #5: I've tried many opt-in's and none have worked to grow my list. How do you create an opt-in that will get people on your list. What are the most popular opt-ins? People tell me to survey my list, however I've gotten no responses. My target audience is 45-50 year old midlife women who want to lose weight, regain their health, energy and vitality. How do I know what social media sites they're hanging out on? - Janelle             Karen's Answer: Unique Selling Proposition. There is a difference between an ideal client and a marketable ideal client. A marketable ideal client is one where you know how to connect with those potential clients. When creating a free offer, you need to think about where your ideal client might be on their own journey. Your opt-ins need to be able to be catered to where your ideal client is, problem aware, solution aware or product aware.                     Kathleen's Answer: If your freebie is a level or two above where your ideal clients are, they aren't going to be interested in your opt-in offer. It's a combination of having the right lead magnet for your target audience, the copy on your signup page, the copy in your social media posts, and using the right social media platform to find those ideal marketable clients.

REFLECTION QUOTES “People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.” ~Helen Keller (1880-1968) “Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness.” ~C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) “Jesus did not come with sword in hand but with nails in hand. Not to bring judgment but to bear judgment.” ~Edmund Clowney (1917-2005), Presbyterian theologian “If thou wouldest be revived to everlasting life thou must by faith as it were set thy selfe upon the crosse of Christ and applie thy hands to his hands, thy feete to his feete, and thy sinnefull heart to his bleeding heart, and content not thy selfe with Thomas to put thy finger into his side, but even dive and plunge thy selfe wholly both bodie and soule into the woundes and bloode of Christ [sic].” ~William Perkins (1558–1602), English clergyman and theologian “The deeper we grow in the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the poorer we become – the more we realize that everything in life is a gift. The tenor of our lives becomes one of humble and joyful thanksgiving. Awareness of our poverty and ineptitude causes us to rejoice in the gift of being called out of darkness into wondrous light and translated into the kingdom of God's beloved Son.” ~Brennan Manning, The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out “It is not as a child that I believe and confess Jesus Christ. My hosanna is born of a furnace of doubt.” ~Attributed to Fyodor Dostoevsky, as quoted in Kierkegaard, the Melancholy Dane by Harold Victor Martin Question: Why do you say that through faith alone you are righteous? Answer: Not because I please God by the worthiness of my faith. It is because only Christ's satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness make me righteous before God, and because I can accept this righteousness and make it mine in no other way than through faith. ~Heidelberg Catechism: Question 61 (1563) SERMON PASSAGE Genesis 15 1 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” 2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. 7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.” 8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?” 9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.” 10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. 12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” 17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”

sermon transcript Introduction There are many astonishing things about the brief three-year ministry of Jesus Christ. It's really incredible to me how much He got done in three years, isn't it? Not traveling very far, yet in three years, He changed the history of the world, and you can focus it all on what we celebrated last week — the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. In one day, in one very brief period of time, his blood was shed, atoning for the sins of His people, from every tribe and language and people and nation, and every generation, centuries and centuries of sinners, in one afternoon atoned for. That's incredible, and then on the third day, by the power of Almighty God raised to life, living eternally. It's incredible. Then look at the miracles of Jesus, the things that He did, the fact that He was able to speak to churning waves and to the howling wind, and it instantly obeyed Him, and became quiet and peaceful, just like that. The fact that He's able to walk on the water. The fact that He's able to raise a dead man to life who had been dead and buried four days, raised to life, simply by a command "Lazarus come forth." That He can do all of these things. These are all incredible about the life and the ministry of Jesus. But some time ago, I came across a different kind of marvel, and it is amazing to me that the Word became flesh and came to his own, but his own did not receive him. Now, that's incredible. That He could do all of these signs and wonders and miracles, and still, they would not believe. That's incredible. Signs of Salvation: Unbelief in the Face of Miracles This was highlighted for me as I read the account of the man born blind in John chapter 9. Jesus heals him by spitting on the ground and making a paste, some mud and smearing it on his eyes, and he gets up, and he's led to the Pool of Siloam, to the pool, and he washes the mud often and he can see. Then the religious authorities arrest him and bring him in for what, I don't know, for now, being able to see... They bring him in, and they're questioning him, very closely about the man who opened his eyes, about Jesus, and they get to the point in the interrogation where they're really getting to the focus of who is Jesus. They said, "We don't know where this... We know where Moses came from. We don't know where this man came from," referring to Jesus, and the man answered to them and said, “You do not know where he's from, and yet he opened my eyes." An original language translation would be this, “Here is the amazing thing. He opened my eyes and you don't know where he came from, now that's amazing.” I say to you that unbelief is amazing in the face of all that Christ has done to show us that He is the Son of God. It's astonishing to me that still they do not believe. I want to get very personal with you. What would it take for you to believe? What kind of miracle would it take for you to believe? Many of you are believers already. You can tell me what led you to faith in Christ, but this is a question for the unbeliever today. What would it take for you to believe? What test would you give Jesus? In today's text, we have the ugly unbelief of the Jewish leaders put on display, and we have also Jesus' incredible and dignified way of dealing with it. Unbelief was constantly putting Jesus on trial, and so we have it again. The Pharisees and Sadducees come together for a strange purpose. They are uncommon bedfellows if you could put it that way. Ordinarily, they despised each other. Ordinarily, they would have had nothing to do with each other. They fought against each other. We get this incredible encounter in the Book of Acts when the apostle Paul was arrested and he's brought in in front of the Sanhedrin. They're giving him a very difficult time and he might even be executed, but then Paul knowing his own people very well, shrewdly says, “I stand here today on account of the resurrection from the dead”, and immediately the Pharisees and Sadducees start tearing at each other like a bunch of wild cats. He just stands back and watches and then is led off and they never resolved his case. The Pharisees and Sadducees couldn't stand each other. Pharisees were usually working-class people, made a living like Paul did, sewing tents. They would work with their hands, they were conservative, and fundamental theologically, they believed in the supernatural, they believed in the resurrection from the dead, they believed in angels and demons, but as we have seen, they held that the Rabbinic tradition was of equal authority to the scripture. They were strongly separatistic. They zealously desired to purify Judaism from all Gentile influences and above all things, they held to their own righteousness by obeying the law of Moses. That was the Pharisees. Now, the Sadducees were different. They were generally aristocratic. They were made very wealthy by their corrupt involvement in the animal sacrificial system. They made tons of money over it, it was corrupt, and they made lots of money through the money changing and through the inspection of sacrifices. They were powerful. They cared nothing for the Rabbinic traditions or for the scriptures. They had no problem making religious, moral, and ethical, and political compromises; whatever it took to further their own interests. They were pragmatists. They were powerful dealmakers. They easily collaborated with whatever Gentile power was in charge. The core of all of this is that they denied the resurrection. If you deny the resurrection, then this life is all you have and if this life is all you have, then you need to grab for all the pleasure you can get and all the power and all the satisfaction because this is all you get. That was their fundamental error, but here they were, together, the Pharisees and Sadducees. What united them? I think it was a common hatred for the light, a common hatred for Christ. In John 3:20, it says, “Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” World War II had all kinds of strange alliances. For example, the Finns allied themselves with the Nazis because they hated Soviet Russia. The US and Great Britain aligned themselves with Soviet Russia because they hated the Nazis. Even in China, the nationalist movement under Chiang Kai-shek temporarily united with the communist under Mao Zedong, because they hated the Japanese and wanted to drive them out of their country. When you have a common enemy, strange folks get together and make alliances that ordinarily would have nothing to do with each other. We have it here with the Pharisees and Sadducees. The gospels record their common goal, and that was to murder the son of God. Matthew 12:14, "The Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.” Who was it that actually affected it? It was the Sanhedrin dominated by the Sadducees, the chief priest, and his family. They are all Sadducees, and so a shared enemy makes these strange alliances. They come to Jesus in verse 1 with an unbelieving demand. They want a sign from heaven. Look at verse 1, “The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested Him, by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven." Now, what is a sign from heaven? They believed that the devil could do signs from Earth, but only God could do a sign from heaven. It's kind of strange because Satan is called elsewhere, the Prince of the Power of the Air. If you study the book of Revelation, the anti-Christ is going to be able to call down fire from heaven. They were wrong in thinking that if Jesus was going to do something like a sign from heaven, it definitely wasn't Satan that could do it, but they were looking for a sign from heaven. Like what? Let Christ call down a pillar of fire like Moses or a pillar of cloud during the day, let him do something like that. Or let him descend, let Jesus descend in a fire on top of a mountain, like at Mount Sinai. Or let Christ call manna down from heaven, feed them with bread from heaven. They want to see a sign from heaven. Or maybe he can control the sun, the moon, and the stars like what happened in Joshua's Day and make the planet stop revolving, do something really big. Or maybe he could at least do what Elijah did on Mount Carmel, call down fire from heaven and some sacrifice. Elijah at least could do that. “Show us a sign from heaven.” What was their purpose? Was it because they're teetering on the edge of faith and if they could just have one more miracle, they'd come over to believe. Is that what it is? Not at all. Look what it says in verse 1, “The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested Him, by asking Him to show them a sign from heaven.” They're testing Jesus, they really want to disqualify Jesus, not to believe in him. Later when they tested him again by asking him about paying taxes to Caesar, Jesus called a spade a spade. He was very plain at that moment. Matthew 22:18, “But Jesus knowing their evil intent said, ‘You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?’” Then He dealt with the issue of taxation. He knows exactly what's going on in their hearts. They're not trying to believe. This is not an honest inquiry by some people genuinely seeking to know the truth and they just need a little more help. “Just one more miracle, that's all it takes. Then I'll believe in Jesus.” It wasn't that at all. Now, doubting Thomas was like that. He wasn't there when Jesus appeared on the first day of the week. So when the other apostles told him about the resurrection, he said, "Unless I see the nail marks, nail prints in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, put my hand on the side, I will not believe.” A week later, Jesus meets his test. That's because Thomas was an apostle, he was to be an eye witness of the resurrection, and therefore, the Lord Jesus granted him a special privilege to meet his test. Don't think he actually put his finger in Jesus' nail marks, I think, he was too busy on the floor, worshipping the resurrected Lord saying, "My Lord and my God." It was enough for him, it was an honest, genuine, test if he could see it, he would believe, and the Lord met it. Others required even less, like Nathaniel for example. In John chapter 1, Jesus said, “Now here is a true Israelite in whom there's no guile.” “How do you know me?” Nathaniel asked. "I saw you while you were under the fig tree before they called you." He said, "Rabbi you are the son of God, you are the King of Israel." Jesus marveled at his belief at this moment. He said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under a fig tree, you shall see greater things than these. I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. I'll give you an even greater sign,” but that's all Nathaniel needed. For these Pharisees and Sadducees, this is not an honest test. They're not trying to believe in Jesus, they're trying to disqualify him, to embarrass him if you can't produce a sign from heaven. Look what Christ does. First of all, He analyzes their hearts, He gives them an analysis [verse 2-3]. “He replied, ‘When evening comes,' you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’” There's that old nautical saying, “Red sky in morning sailor take warning, red sky at night, sailor delight.” It has some kind of a foundation here in scripture. I looked it up on the Internet to find if it had any meteorological foundation. Apparently, it does. It says, “Picture yourself on a ship in the middle of a mid-latitude ocean. There’s the wind and the storm path is from west to east, it is morning and you're watching the sunrise, it is red. Since it is morning, you are looking east, the red sky indicates that there is high pressure there. Because you're in the mid-latitudes, the high is moving eastward away from you, that could only mean that a low-pressure region is coming towards you and with it probably an associated storm, so, sailor take warning. Now, picture yourself watching the sunset from the ship and the western sky is red, that means the exact thing is reversed. An area of high pressures to your west, the westerlies are moving in toward you, and good weather is on the way, sailor's delight. That's how it works. There are many other weather predictions based on signs. Jesus is basically saying here that we have a common-sense observation, accumulation of information that enables us, somewhat, to predict the future. We can read the signs of the weather, we can read what happens just from everyday life, just from living here, we can accumulate things by our five senses, so they should have been able to read the signs of the times. What is He talking about “the signs of the times”? It has to do with Jesus' ministry. It has to do with a river of signs and wonders that He's already done, an absolute river. [Matthew 4] “Jesus went throughout Galilee teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed those having seizures, the paralyzed and He healed them.” Matthew 9:35, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.” Matthew 12:15, “Jesus withdrew from that place, many followed Him and He healed all their sick.” Matthew 14:35-36, “…and when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country, people brought all their sick to him and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.” Do you not see the comprehensive healing ministry of Jesus? This was not one or two miracles. This is a river of signs and wonders. Now you might say, maybe He didn't do any in front of his enemies. First of all, huge crowds were coming. He wasn't distinguishing between friend and foe. He was healing everybody, whether they believed or not. You don't just have to have faith in order to be healed by Jesus, but there's a clear account in Matthew 12 of how Jesus is in a synagogue and it happened to be on the Sabbath. Jesus was forever healing on the Sabbath, and I think He did it on purpose. There was a man there with a shriveled hand, and the Pharisees were watching him closely to see if Jesus would heal him on the Sabbath. He challenged them. He says, “One of you has a sheep and it falls into the pit on the Sabbath, will you not make an effort to lift them out? How much more valuable is a man than a sheep?” Then He commands the man, "Stretch out your hand," and he stretched it out, and it was completely restored. Then they went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. They saw it with their own eyes. They had no excuse. The Purpose of Miracles Now, what was the purpose of these signs and wonders? The purpose is so that we could believe in Him. Jesus did many other miraculous signs which are not recorded in this book, says John in John 20, but “… these signs are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing, you may have life in His name.” That's why. John Chapter 5, "I have testimony weightier than that of John," said Jesus. "For the very work that the Father has given me to finish and which I am doing testifies that the Father has sent Me." The miracles testified that the Father sent Jesus. To his own disciples, He says, in John 14-11, "Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves." The miracles were a solid foundation for genuine faith in Christ. They were proof that God was with Jesus of Nazareth in a way He'd been with no one else. More than that, they were evidence of Jesus' power to forgive sins and of his status as the only begotten Son of God. That's what the miracles were. They were effective for the elect. They were effective for those who would believe. In John 2:11, after He changes the water into wine, it says this, “The first of His miraculous signs Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee, He thus in this manner, He in this way, revealed His glory, and His disciples put their faith in him.” You see the connection between changing the water into wine and their faith. Then there's Nicodemus, who comes in the next chapter 3. He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know that your teacher has come from God for no one could perform the miraculous signs you're doing if God were not with him." That’s the basis of Nicodemus' faith. In John 7:31, “Still many in the crowd put their faith in Him. They said, ‘When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?’” So many believed in Jesus because of these miracles. Then there's that man, who is born blind; he has got to be one of my favorite figures in the entire New Testament. I mean he gives as well as he gets there in Chapter 9. You got to admit he's a courageous man, this is what you had to do to survive as a blind man. He's no shrinking violet, he knows how to handle himself, he's strong and courageous. He said, "You know, whether this man's a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know, I was blind, and now, I see. If you ask me my opinion. I think he's a prophet from God." In the end, they throw him out of the synagogue. He was the one who said “From the beginning of history, no one has ever heard of him, a man born blind, having his eyes opened. If this man Jesus were not from God, he could do nothing.” He's drawing his own conclusions, he is ready, he just doesn't know who Jesus is. He was blind, he never saw him. Jesus comes and he asked him a question. "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He knows his voice, he knows right away who he's talking to and says, "Tell me sir, so that I may believe in Him." He says, "I am the one who is speaking to you, in fact, you have now seen him." And he said, "Lord, I believe." And he worshipped Him just like that. The miracle was the foundation of that man's saving faith, that's why the miracles were given. However, the main point of this passage is the miracles are ineffective for those who do not receive saving grace from God. They're ineffective for those who harden their own hearts and who are spiritually blind. It doesn't matter how many miracles you see, unless God moves in your heart, you will never believe, never. So you may say, "Well, I set up a test. If God will do this if God will do that." Even if you were to do that, you still wouldn't believe, if you don't believe the testimony of Scripture. It didn't matter how many signs and wonders Chorazin and Bethsaida saw in Matthew 11, they still didn't believe. Jesus said in Matthew 11, "Woe to you Chorazin! Woe to you Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the Day of Judgment than for Tyre and Sidon than for you, and you Capernaum, you saw all of my miracles, will you be lifted up to the sky? No, you'll go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day, but I tell you, it will be more bearable on the Day of Judgment for Sodom than for you." River of miracles, still, they do not believe. The clearest summary statement of this is in John chapter 12. After all of the public ministry in which John relates seven miraculous signs, seven extended teachings, he sums it up, concerning the unbelief of the Jews toward Jesus. Even after Jesus had done all of these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in Him. "This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet, “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For this reason, they could not believe." Because as Isaiah says elsewhere, "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts so that they could neither see with their eyes nor understand with their hearts, nor turn, and I would heal them." If somebody's heart is hardened by sin, willfully rejecting, turning away, and that's all of us, friends, before God's grace comes, that's all of us, not a special category of sinners, that's all of us. If God's grace doesn't come, we will never believe, it doesn't matter how many miracles God shows us. In the 18th century, there was a witty, clever Frenchman named Francois-Marie Arouet. He was able to defeat anyone in a debate, slicing people to ribbons with his wit, with his clever tongue, never once, never a single time, did he lose a battle of words. He was brilliant, he was incisive, cynical, sarcastic, he could lay people in shreds. It actually got him into trouble, he insulted one person too many and he got thrown in jail as a result. He was a thorough skeptic of all things religious and spiritual. He did whatever he could to mock the Christian faith and deride all aspects of the supernatural. He's better known by his pen name, Voltaire. This is what Voltaire said concerning miracles, "Even if a miracle should be wrought in the open marketplace before a 1000 sober witnesses, I would rather mistrust my own senses than admit a miracle." That about says it doesn't it? Thank you, Voltaire, for making it that plain. "I could be standing, watching the dead body of Jesus, I could watch him rise from the dead, and I still would not believe." He's right, it's not enough to see the miracle. You have to have another miracle, a miracle of regeneration inside your heart, or you will never see what God is doing. It's not seeing is believing, friends, it's believing is seeing, and belief is a gift of God. Unbelievers exert this daily faith in saying, "When evening comes, it's going to be fair weather, for the sky is red and... " You know, he says, "You know how to do this. You interpret this all the time, you know how to predict the weather." I remember when I was living in Massachusetts, there was a very strong warning, a prediction of a coming hurricane. People heard the reports and I don't know anyone that doubted them. I remember long lines at the supermarket, flashlights, and batteries being bought, canned goods. I remember people buying all kinds of stuff. I remember especially, duct tape in big X's on plate glass windows. They knew how to interpret the reports of the meteorologists and all of the weather sources in the news, and they believed them. But when God says, "There's a coming storm known as Judgment Day and there's only one refuge, and it's Jesus,” they don't believe. Even if Jesus does a river of miracles, they still do not believe. They make preparations for a hurricane, but they do not make preparations for the storm that will destroy their soul for eternity; for that, they make no preparation, and how terrifying is that? Instead, it doesn't matter how much you show the unbelievers, they just daily harden their hearts. Instead of seeing God's awesome works around them, unbelievers daily harden their hearts. In Romans 25, it says, "But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed." Satan blinds the hearts of unbelievers, so they can't see the glory of God in the face of Christ. They can't see because Satan blinds their eyes. How many more miracles would Jesus have to do? Answer: Not one. How many more prophecies would he have to fulfill? It wouldn't matter. What more could he have done to prove himself to them, even still, they would not believe. Judgment for Unbelief in Miracles So Christ moves out in judgment, verse 4, "A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign but none will be given it, except the sign of Jonah, Jesus then left them and went away." First, He assesses them; they are, He says, "A wicked and adulterous generation." He marvels over their hardness of heart. Here they are for a second time in Matthew's Gospel, asking for another sign. Matthew 12, "He's shown them many good works from the Father, and yet they want to stone him.” Their hearts are perverse and apart from sovereign grace, they will never repent and never believe." "They are wicked,” He says. That speaks of internal defilement. They are adulterous, which means they should have been God's bride, instead they're running after, whoring after other gods or their other idols. They're acting in an adulterous way toward God and so He gives them a decree, no new signs. "None will be given it." He says. He will not be a traveling miracle show. You remember during his trial, King Herrod had him over, and he was hoping that Jesus would do some kind of miracle in front of him. Why? So he could repent and believe like the King of Nineveh, take off his royal robes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and mourn for his sin and wicked? No. Because they didn't have cable TV back then and He would have been a good form of entertainment. He just wanted entertainment, something to lighten the burden of living in this sin-cursed world, just entertainment, that's all, not ready to believe. So Jesus decrees that there'll be no new sign from heaven given, except one, which I'll talk about in a moment. But then in his action, He ends the discussion. In Verse 4, "Jesus then left them and went away." When the judge's gavel goes down, the case is dismissed, it's done. He ends the discussion, it's finished, and He walks away. He has the authority to end the discussion, so He will do on Judgment Day, as well. It's not going to be an endless banter of our relative merits and his law, and all that, it's not going to go like that. He will make the final decision. To those who have not repented and believed in this life, He will say, "Depart from me, you who are cursed into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." And that's it, there's no recourse, He is the final judge. It is finished at that moment, and so He leaves and goes away. Now, that final sign, He will give it, it's the sign of the Prophet Jonah. The sign of Jonah we first saw back in Matthew 12: 39-41. He says, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it, except the sign of the Prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the son of man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." The empty tomb, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the resurrection was his final sign to a wicked and adulterous generation. This is an incredible display of the person and power of Jesus, power over death, over our final enemy. "No man takes My life from Me, but I lay it down of myself. I have the authority to lay it down and I have the authority to take it back up again, and you will see the evidence, the empty tomb.” No one else in history has had this power. It should have been enough, don't you think? Enough to prove his claim that He was God. Signs of Salvation: Apostolic Preaching There's a second sign connected with it and that was preaching. Because Jonah came out of the belly of the large fish, and he went and preached, 40 more days and Nineveh will be overturned. So it wasn't just the resurrection, it was also the preaching. The Jews would have both the empty tomb, and the preaching of the Apostles. On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, addressed the crowd, and preached the great Pentecost message, and the culmination is the evidence of the resurrection. In Acts 2:32, "God has raised this Jesus to life and we are all witnesses of the fact." In Acts Chapter 3, after healing the lame beggar, he preaches it again. Peter preaches in Acts 3, "The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed. You disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the holy and righteous one and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead and we are all witnesses of this fact." Arrested for healing a lame man, the religious leaders bring him into the Sanhedrin, in Acts Chapter 4, and guess what? They preach the resurrection again. Peter says, "If we've been called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel, it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed." Over and over, they refer to the resurrection again in Chapter 5, "You killed Him, but God raised him from the dead." Again and again, they didn't just get the empty tomb, they also got the preaching by eyewitnesses that Jesus had risen from the dead. Was it enough? No, it was not enough. Jesus had predicted it wouldn't be enough in a story about the rich man and Lazarus. A rich man got sent into hell and he's in torment there, and he wants to go warn his brothers, he wants to warn them lest they end up in the same place because they're going the same way he was. Do you remember what Abraham said? "They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them." "No, father Abraham,” He says, "That's not enough, the Scripture isn't enough." Now, that's a voice from hell. "It's not enough just to have the Bible, we need more. No, father Abraham, but if they see someone rise from the dead, then they will believe." Abraham said the truth when he said, "Even if they see someone rise from the dead, even still, they will not believe." So, what happened? In order to prevent the resurrection, the Jewish leaders hired some Roman soldiers and put them on guard duty in front of a tomb of a dead man. Can you imagine the little conversations going on among the Romans? "Why are we here?" "I don't know, Pilate sent us here. I guess this is just for one night." You know they're just talking among themselves, guarding a dead man's tomb. It was very routine until suddenly something happened on the morning of the third day. An angel came down and his clothing was brilliant, radiant, shining, and he by himself, moves the stone and sits on it, end of discussion. The Romans are shaking like dead men. I think they ran away once they came to. The soldiers went to the Jewish leaders and told them what had happened, they told them of the empty tomb, they told them of the angel. Do you know what happened? They paid them off to lie and say his disciples came and stole him away while we were asleep. They paid money, even still, they did not believe. Do you think they went and saw the empty tomb, do you think they went and saw it? Oh absolutely, they went and saw it to say, "What are we going to do with this?" Pay money, even still, they would not believe. The Final Sign for Salvation But there's a future sign coming, the final one, it's not a sign for salvation, it's a sign that Jesus is coming back. They wanted a sign from heaven, remember that? "Show us a sign from Heaven?" “Alright, you'll see a sign from heaven. It will be too late, too late, but you will see it.” Matthew 24, "At that time, the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the clouds in the sky, and all the nations of the Earth will mourn. He will send out his angels and they will gather his elect from one end of the heavens to the other." The sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Jesus spoke of this at his trial, before the Sanhedrin, before the high priest. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God?" "I am." He said, "And in the future, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven, you will see that sign." It's a clear prediction of the second coming of Christ, but it's not a sign that produces salvation, it's a sign of impending judgment. Revelation 1:7, "Behold He is coming with the clouds and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him, and all the nations of the earth will mourn because of Him, so shall it be, Amen." They'll see the sign of the Son of Man in the heavens, they'll see a heavenly sign, but it will be too late for them, you know why? Jesus said to Thomas, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are they who have not seen and yet have believed.” The only way you're going to have your sins forgiven, the only way is by believing something you cannot see. By believing it from the scripture, by believing that Jesus has risen from the dead, the evidence of His miracles here on the page, the evidence of his healings, the evidence of His fulfilled prophecies, the evidence of his teachings, the evidence of His person, the evidence of His resurrection are on the pages of scripture and nowhere else. Here is where you will find your salvation by repenting and believing the clear testimony of scripture and no other place. What will it take to get you to believe? If you don't believe by the clear preaching of the word, like this morning, for example, you will not believe. For God has ordained something called “today” and He set it up, calling it “today”, saying, "Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart." It says about today in 2 Corinthians 6:2, "In the time of my favor, I heard you, and in the day of salvation, I helped you, I tell you now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation." You may have come here today, never having trusted in Christ, not knowing how you're going to face Judgment Day, and now you've heard this kind of a sermon, now you're concerned, perhaps. You don't know how you're going to face Jesus as judge, you've never dealt with Jesus as Savior. Simply believe that Jesus's death on the cross, His blood shed on the cross is for you. The signs were to give evidence that He had the power to forgive sins. Hear what I'm saying, believe in your heart. If you have any questions, if there's anything hindering you, if there's any lack of information, if it's an honest inquiry, come and talk to me after the service. You don't know who to talk to, talk to me. I'll talk to as many people as you want or any of the others that you've seen, any of those that have come and collected money, they'll talk to you. Any person here that's a believer will tell you how to have faith in Christ, or come talk to me. You don't need to walk anywhere or do anything to be saved, but you have to hear and believe, and if so, your sins will be forgiven. But if you have an honest question, you don't know what to do, come and ask, and the answer is given. If you say, "I'll believe if he does a miracle." No, you won't. The Scriptures already testified about that, He has given you all you need right here. Now, I speak to those of you who have already made a commitment of faith, what does this text say to you? Thank God you believed. Thank God you believe, it's because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, give Him the glory, give Him the praise. Your faith isn't something you scraped up together and then you saw seven or eight things from scripture and then boom, you came over. It's a gift from God. This chapter, Matthew 16, will testify to that later, "Blessed to you, Simon, son of Jonah, this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. Give thanks and praise to God." And one more thing, don't give up on those hard cases that you think will never believe, don't give up on them. I'm talking about the relative, the mother, the father, the brother, the sister, the son, the daughter that just will not believe. God is able to take out the heart of stone and give the heart of flesh, it is His gift to give, so pray without ceasing, for the salvation of those loved ones. I'm talking about a co-worker, a neighbor, somebody who just doesn't seem to get it, that God will take away the blindness, and give them eternal sight.

Nutty. Just freakin' nutty. That's my overall reaction to this episode. Which is funny, because for the first half or so, my overall reaction was more like, "Yawn. Can I get away with reading this comic book AND following 24 at the same time?" (Answer: Not really.)
